Six Pendle pensioners have proved you are never too old to learn. For they are part of a small group of parishioners from Holy Saviours RC Church in Nelson, who have just completed an Emergency First-aid Training Course. And two of them – Sheila Cooper and Doreen Batson - are aged 76 and 78! The Parish of The Good Shepherd is constantly promoting itself as a place of safety and well-being, so when it was suggested to have a few more first-aiders, nine volunteers stepped forward to attend the course which was partly sponsored by the parish. Karen Bracewell, Pendle Leisure Trust’s Training Manager, taught the small group everything they needed to know about emergency first-aid during a number of sessions in the church hall, and they all passed with flying colours. Ann Lang said: “It just goes to show you are never too old to learn something new. Of course it does help when you have a wonderfully caring teacher as Karen.”

Jars, Jars and more Jars... A philatelist collects stamps, a tegestologist collects beer mats, but what do you call a person who collects jars?..........Lewis (J)Garforth!! The Pendle Leisure Trust graphic designer is getting married in May and with an English Country Garden theme, he and his fiancée are using glass jars as a large part of the Reception decoration. “Well it was a lovely idea until we counted up just how many we would need - probably over 400. Even with six months to go, this was a daunting task. So I asked my colleagues at Colne Town Hall to help. The response has been unbelievable and we now have approaching 350 jars already! “As we didn’t give much thought to housing them up until the wedding, currently my car clinks at every turn, my desk drawers clink whenever I open them, whenever I move my feet under my desk I hear the familiar clink and my bed has started clinking from all the jars stored underneath it! “But, it was a very satisfying day though when we finished decorating our 100th jar, stood back and saw them all together, as this small glimpse of the final effect just proved that all the clinking and collecting will definitely be worth it in the end!”
