The fit of dental restorations is considered as a fundamental requirement for its long term success. The use of CAD/CAM technology for the fabrication of restorations has reduced the fabrication times and errors inherent to human factor. However a factor still depending on the ability of the clinician is the realization of dental preparation. An inadequate design or execution of the preparation leads to an incorrect insertion and settlement of the restorations, and consequently to a lack of fitting. Objective: The aim of this bibliographic review is to evaluate the influence of design and quality of dental preparation in the marginal and internal fit of crowns fabricated with CAD/ CAM technology. Material and methods: A bibliographic review has been done with the databases Medline and Cochrane, using these key words: «preparation», «design», «marginal», «fit», «crown», «CAD/ CAM». The research covered the last 10 years. Results: The research resulted in a total of 9 in vitro studies, of which 8 evaluated the influence of preparation design, whereas only 1 studied the influence of quality of dental preparation, in the adjustment of crowns fabricated with CAD/CAM. The parameters of design evaluated were the type of margin design, finish line curvature, and variations in preparation depths and degree of convergence of preparation walls. Discusion: Few articles studied the influence of parameters relative to design and quality of preparation in the marginal and internal fit of CAD/CAM crowns. This is why more

scientific evidence is necessary to establish the ideal design of dental preparation for the fabrication of restorations with CAD/CAM. Conclusions: Independently of the variations in design and quality of dental preparations, the marginal and internal fit of the copings were within the clinically accepted values. However the copings fabricated on preparations with margins in rounded shoulder, with more total oclusal convergence and good quality of preparation presented better marginal fit.
