Ground zero identified THE Fire and Rescue Department believes it has pinpointed the location of Wednesday's blast at the Empire Shopping Gallery to a lower ground floor restaurant. This was said by Housing and L o ca l G over nment Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung, who added the explosion was due to a "liquefied natural gas (LNG) leakage". He said the mall management had appointed LNG specialists to install the system while audits on the condition of the gas were done every two years for security and safety reasons. "This incident is an unfortunate one as the mall has only been in operation for one-and-a-half years," he said after inspecting the scene with Energy Commission officers yesterday. Chor said the department's forensic investigation team was still investigating the extent of the damage. The minister had earlier said the department's preliminary report on the explosion would be out today. Me anw hi le, t he st af f, guests and workers of the adjoining hotel and office block were briefly allowed to remove valuables under Fire and Rescue Department supervision yesterday. The mall's tenants, however, were still forbidden from entering.

Someone may have left gas valve turned on, says Energy Commission director THE explosion at the Empire Shopping Gallery in Subang Jaya could have been caused by a careless act of leaving a gas pipe on, first investigations reveal. Energy Commission’s Gas Safety and Supply Regulations director Ahmad Nornadzmi Ahmad Zulkarnain told The Malay Mail there was strong likelihood that someone had forgotten the simple practice of switching off a gas valve at a restaurant on the lower ground floor. "It is possible someone may have left a valve turned on overnight," he said. The explosion, which was

triggered by gas build-up, occurred on the ground floor of the five-storey mall at 3.45am on Wednesday. It tore into the adjoining office block and studio apartments. Two other floors in the shopping complex were also damaged. The impact blew out ground floor shop windows and wooden panels, damaging several cars parked outside. Two security guards and a couple were injured while at least 300 people, including

guests at an adjoining hotel, were evacuated. The mall has been closed pending investigations. Checks by the Energy Commission before the blast showed the mall had complied with safety regulations. The construction and structure of the gas pipes were in accordance with the commission guidelines. Its chief executive officer, Ahmad Fauzi Hasan, said various steps needed to be taken to zero in on the source

of the blast. "We need to establish where exactly and when it happened, as well as how," he said. "For this, we'll have to look at documents such as the monthly gas bill, which could indicate a sudden increase in gas use." He said systems tests would be conducted, as well as interviews with those in the vicinity at the time of the incident. "It could even have been due to workers trying to modify the liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline," he said. Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) director Zahrim Osman said:

"Our responsibility now is to ensure the mall is safe for workers to enter and conduct clean-up operations. "We will visit the site to ensure areas such as escalators, elevators and general structure are safe for use before anyone is allowed to re-enter." Asked what kind of repairs were necessary and when they could be done, he said the matter was still being discussed with the Public Works Department as well as the building owners. "We first need to identify areas that require our focus, which may take time," he said.

Negligent worker poser THE Empire Shopping Gallery management has been informed by the Energy Commission Wednesday's blast could be due to a gas valve being left open at one of the outlets at the mall. Said its public relations spokesman, Raymond Siva: "The commission has stated the explosion may have been due to a simple act of an employee forgetting to turn off a gas valve at one of the outlets. "If one particular outlet is responsible, that outlet would be responsible for the losses and damage to the mall and

other business outlets. "Likewise, if the management is the one found to be negligent, then we would be fully responsible for all the outlets' losses." Raymond said the management was waiting for the commission's investigation to be completed before making any statement on the cause of the explosion. He was commenting on speculation from online portals and social networks blaming the management for the blast at the high-end shopping mall in SS16.

ROBBERY SUSPECTS: Two of the three MACC officers who were freed on police bail yesterday

THE three Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) officers allegedly involved in a robbery at KL International Airport (KLIA) here on Sept 15 have been released on police bail. The trio, who had allegedly robbed a foreign moneychanger

of US$300,000 (RM945,687), are out on bail until Tuesday. Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the trio, aged between 20 and 35, were with MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

PAS might as well close shop! "The reasons given after meeting for thtee hours are flimsy, irresponsible and absolutely unacceptable to Msians." To this, Anwar responded: "Kelantan (93), Trengganu (03) Syariah Enactments approved prior to the formation of PR. Reaffirmed PR commitment ie Fed Constit, Buku Jingga." Abdul Rahman countertweeted: "Anwar congratulated PR Supreme Council for its maturity. Does he think Malaysians are that stupid? "This proves PR is not ready to be Federal government. This fundamental problem which can tear the very fibre of Malaysian society is swept

under the carpet. "When PR Supreme council said PAS of 93 and 2003 were irrelevant, that's as good as saying, take this and shove it up your you-know-where!" Selangor DAP assemblyman Teng Chang Khim joined in: "No one in PR compromises on its party agenda but everyone agrees on a common PR agenda. Hooray! "Some people in BN have to go for heart surgery after learning that PR has settled hudud issue amicably. "In BN, Umno No.2 said yes but err... No.1 said no. Then everyone follows. No meeting. One man decides for political expediency. "Oh! Yes. To MCA and Gerakan, sorry, we are not leaving PR, much to your disappointment."

Seri Setia PKR assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad tweeted that PR agreed on implementation only when all its component parties agreed and that he was sad the syariah issue had become a political punching bag for Umno. "BN itself cannot agree, Najib and the Deputy Prime Minister have different opinions on this." Later, Abdul Rahman tweeted in reply asking what the difference was. Nik Nazmi tweeted that hudud had become a game for Umno to break up PR and clearly they were disappointed this time. Teng added: "In PR we discuss with open hearts even if the meeting is behind closed doors. In BN they don't even have meetings."

Hisham defends meeting with Perkasa HOME Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has defended meeting Malay rights group Perkasa over the abolishing of the Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960. Yesterday Perkasa met with the minister to hand over a memorandum on the group’s demands relating to the two new laws replacing the ISA. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had announced during his Malaysia Day address the government would repeal the Act and introduce two new laws during the next parliamentary sitting. Hishammuddin denied he was politically biased by meeting Perkasa and explained the ministry had met other groups as well. “I am meeting with all the groups and not only Perkasa. We have been engaging with the Bar Council when we

were looking at the amendments. So there's nothing peculiar about meeting Perkasa. “I felt that it is important that Perkasa understands where we are going forward. What our content is and what we are striving for,” he said during a Press conference. He added Perkasa’s perspective was important in formulating the new laws. “It (abolishing the ISA) is something we will do without fear or favour but we need to balance it with the bigger national interest and the views of groups and NGOs will become very useful to us,” he said. Hishammuddin also stressed Perkasa had been very “rational” in its approach

THE row over hudud controversy has reached Twitterverse. After a late night closeddoor meeting with Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders yesterday, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said although PKR respects the ideological differences within its component parties, it would continue to stick to policies that were agreed upon. After Anwar congratulated PR for showing maturity in overcoming the controversial hudud law issue, Kota Belud BN parliamentarian Abdul Rahman Dahlan tweeted: "From the early tweets, PAS, DAP and PKR are in an 'agree to disagree' agreement. WTH is that? "Does it mean PAS 93 and PAS 03 were irrelevant? This absolutely slaps PAS in face.

and warned the issue should not be politicised. Hishammuddin's meeting is bound to draw flak from the public as the Malayrights group had been very vocal about protecting the draconian Act. Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali had recently said the group would reject the new laws if it did not retain the “preventive spirit” of the old Act. "We want preventive elements to be retained because two aspects of the ISA — prevention and rehabilitation — had been most effective in tackling security issues in the country," he reportedly said. Utusan Malaysia had also called on the government to preserve the role of the ISA in the new laws.

“Surely, if the United States had to resort to enforcing laws allowing detention without trial, (Malaysia’s) new (anti-terrorism) laws to be enacted soon should also play the role of the ISA, which is to protect the peace and security of the country,” wrote its senior news editor Zulkefli Hamzah in his column. Yesterday, Ibrahim told reporters the group had in its memorandum, proposed the government establish a high-powered committee to bypass the courts to decide on who should be detained without trial. “If we use the court system, it will take a long time. “It is better if we set up this high-powered committee, comprising the police chief, Attorney-General, Suhakam and anyone else who is credible."

However, the officers have been discharged from their respective duties while waiting for police to wrap up their probe. On Sept 15, the three officers had approached the victim at KLIA when he was about to board a plane for Singapore.

The suspects asked the moneychanger to hand over the cash he was carrying. When the latter refused, they grabbed the money and fled. The victim then lodged a police report. Part of the stolen money has since been recovered.

Wee: Resolve school prefects problem By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my

THE Education Ministry has directed the Selangor education department to end the stalemate between the Klang High School and the parents of the ( now17) prefects who resigned, as they claimed the appointments of new prefects did not follow a timehonoured procedure and were tinged with favoritism. Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong told The Malay Mail that if the parents are not happy with the conduct of the school over the issue, they should meet the Selangor education department director Abdullah Mad Yunus. "I have also instructed Abdullah to advise the headmistress to have a meeting with the parents. I hope the meeting can resolve the whole issue," added Wee yesterday. Meanwhile, Klang MP Charles Santiago (pic) said he will raise the matter in Parliament. Santiago said he made the decision following an earlier statement by Wee on Wednesday that he did not find any wrongdoing by the school over the appointment of prefects despite not going through the usual probation period set by the school. "I feel Wee and the school are sweeping the matter under the carpet. First, the school had misled Wee in their report regarding the appointment of new prefects and secondly he openly said he did not find anything wrong with the school over the selection of seven prefects who are newbies," said Santiago yesterday at the Klang DAP headquarters here. "The seven students bypassed standard operating procedure of a 14-week probation period before being confirmed as prefects, so how can they say there is no misconduct?" Santiago also called for the suspension of the school's headmistress, Huzaimah Bahari, pending the investigation by the Education Ministry. "We believe she was the one who compiled the report and that she did not explain to the Ministry about what really happened. We are urging the Ministry to start a

fresh probe and suspend her for the time being," he said, adding that one more prefect had stepped down on Wednesday bringing the total to 17 who resigned as prefects. Santiago said he is appalled by the attitude of the headmistress who refused to see parents or students regarding the matter and reminded schools they have a duty to explain to parents who have enqueries over any issue concerning their children. One of the affected parents present at Santiago's press conference, Arul Denis, claimed he and his lawyer went to the school on Wednesday to meet Huzaimah to discuss the issue but was rudely told to leave the school grounds. "My son is one of the students affected and I went to see the headmistress to discuss the matter but was stopped by a teacher with the name tag of Nik Aziz, outside her office. He questioned why we were there and ordered us to leave," said Arul, adding he was very disappointed with the school's handling of the matter. On Monday, The Paper That Cares front-paged the resignation of an initial 16 Klang High School prefects over what they claimed was a breach of protocol and bias in the appointment of new prefects. The appointment of a newlyappointed Form Four prefect as head boy among others, triggered the stepping down on Sept 19 — just before the appointment ceremony. Parents of these students claimed favouritism and breach of procedures as unlike their predecessors, the new prefects did not undergo the 14-week probationary period.

KL mayor asks for tolerance in Brickfields

The blind struggle to navigate Brickfields after traders take up sidewalk space

BRICKFIELDS — for so long the home of the visually-impaired — has now become a "no man's land" for the blind. It used to be a walk in the park to and from the Malaysian Association of the Blind (MAB) headquarters but had since become almost impossible to navigate after traders were allowed to park their stalls on the Jalan Tun Sambanthan sidewalk to ply their Deepavali wares. Fully-blind George Wong, 75, now faces a hellish situation during his weekly visits to the MAB. to catch his bus home. As the walkway in front of the station has been taken over by the stalls, he has to gingerly make his way around. "This scares me as the sidewalk is close to the busy road. "Sometimes, I go the wrong way and have to make the long way back to MAB to start over." Mohd Haris Fadzilah Ahmad, 32, said a friend was not as lucky, as his walking stick was almost hit by a car before he fell down, injuring himself. "Are the authorities waiting

for someone to die before acting?" said the partially-blind masseuse who commutes to Brickfields daily. Blind student Afendi Adlun, 20, said he almost fell on the road while on his way to MAB recently. "I can normally walk unaccompanied but with the traders on the pavement, I missed my mark, missed a step and almost tripped on the road." MAB's Zalina Hassan, 37, said complaints to City Hall had fallen on deaf ears. "The blind having no proper facilities is not something new here. Our needs are constantly being put on hold."

KL MAYOR Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail said stalls in Brickfields would be allowed to continue operating for another month. He was responding to a query by The Malay Mail on traders in Brickfields hogging walkways along Jalan Tun Sambathan, making it difficult for pedestrians, especially the blind, to move around the area. He said while he understood the plight of pedestrians, traders should also be given a chance to do business. “Give them a month. Give them a chance to work," he said. He said tourists and locals flock to Little India in Brickfields, especially during

She said at the corner of a bus stop in front of the YMCA building in Jalan Thambipillay, there used to be a pole to stop the blind from using the route. "Some of my friends were hurt badly after bumping into the pole, which was only removed much later." Partially-blind Mohd Zuhairi Abdul Hamid said indiscriminate motorcycle parking on pavements designated for the visually-impaired was also another headache. "Besides expanding the pavements, the authorities should make clearer signs for the public to identify areas meant for the blind."

Deepavali, and that City Hall had to allow the traders to set up stalls there. “We allow this at other places during the Ramadan month and if we don’t do the same during Deepavali, people will complain and say we are being unfair.” The walkways around Brickfields are marked extensively with raised lines and dots for the blind. The Malay Mail had also received calls from the public claiming stalls in the area were causing traffic congestion as unloading of goods were done by the roadside.

Welfare benefit for all visually-impaired BEGINNING tomorrow, individuals who are blind in one eye will be classified as a disabled person and can receive privileges under the Social Welfare Department. Wo m e n , F a m i l y a n d C ommunity De velopment Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the decision was made at a meeting of the National Council for the Disabled. "This will enable the people who fall under this category to get the same privileges enjoyed by other disabled people when they register with the Social Welfare Department," she said at a Press conference after

launching the 60th Anniversary of the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB), yesterday. Shahrizat added local authorities throughout the nation are required to include a representative from the disabled community in their planning and development committee. "This is part of the ministry's effort to mainstream the disabled community's issues into the development of the nation towards ensuring that Malaysia is a barrier free country." Local authorities will be required to set up an audit access unit to ensure all public facilities are properly monitored and maintained.

WOM E N , Fam i ly and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil will sit with City Hall to discuss how to tackle the issue of petty traders taking up walkways in front of shop lots in Brickfields, a norm when Deepavali is just around the corner. "City Hall must take necessary action on this matter and we will inform them about this," she said. Shahrizat expressed her disappointment with Malaysians when it comes to respecting

the disabled community. "It is important everybody is aware of this. Traders cannot do this. That's why advocacy is important. I am disappointed Malaysians are not considerate enough about the disabled. "Ordinary citizens must have respect and consideration for the disabled as we want to be a barrier-free country. "There needs to be more advocacy and awareness. Mindsets must change."

Mixed reactions by disabled-friendly NGOs THE Women, Family and Community Development Ministry's move to classify individuals who are blind in one eye under the disabled (OKU) category, requiring local authorities to elect a disabled representative to sit in their planning and development committee and to set up an audit access unit, received mixed reactions from several nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) championing the cause. Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) president Datuk Dr Abdullah Malim Baginda said categorising those blind in one eye as OKU would help them tremendously, especially if they are poor.

"They will receive OKU cards and get discounts for medical treatments and free medical check-ups," he said. Dr Abdullah Malim said electing an OKU representative to sit in local authorities' planning and development committee would ensure the needs of their community were met. "At the moment, we do sit in committee meetings but only informally. Sometimes, we also get called in for audit checks by several companies," he said. One such company he cited was Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, to which he tested their disabled-friendly facilities two weeks ago. For Independent Living

and Training Centre (ILTC) president Francis Siva, he opined the move should have been done 15 years ago. "We also need to know who will monitor the committee and ensure this policy is carried out. There has to be a proper mechanism," he said. However, Francis felt the efforts would not solve all problems faced by the disabled community unless "a disabled person is elected as a councilor in every local council. "This would be more effective as our suggestions can be discussed at full board meetings and have a budget allocated for it." Persatuan Kurang Upaya

Anggota Melayu Malaysia (Permata) president Suhairi Abdullah, was unhappy those blind in one eye were categorised as OKU. "Why does the government want to help people who are still able-bodied? They are not completely blind. "If this is the case, soon, people who are deaf in one ear or people who do not have one leg will also be under the disabled category," he said. "Currently, OKUs with a salary of RM1,200 are eligible to receive a monthly disabled worker allowance of RM300. If the partiallyblind are considered OKUs, the government might have to fork out more."

Predator cabbies Violent attacks by city taxi drivers spook migrants

VIOLENCE by taxi drivers against immigrants took a turn for the worse following two serious cases of robbery-assault involving two Myanmar asylum seekers in the city. One victim had 18 stitches for cuts in a blade attack by a cabbie while another’s face was bruised by a taxi driver’s accomplice. The cases have reinforced fears by migrant communities that they were being targeted by rogue cabbies due to their vulnerability and reluctance to report such attacks to police. Tenaganita, a non-governmental organisation that protects and promotes the rights of women, migrants and refugees, in highlighting the matter told a press conference that

many similar cases involving taxi drivers, some working in cahoots with thugs, were brought to their attention. The latest victims were two men who spoke on condition of anonymity of at the press conference yesterday. Despite being badly injured in the attacks, both men refused to lodge police reports for fear of reprisals over their legality of stay in the country. The men said they had fled their strife-torn region in Myanmar and were awaiting refugee status determination from the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR. In the first case, a taxi driver

took a 23-year-old man, his father and two brothers on a terror ride before attacking them with a blade last Monday at 5.30am. They left their home in Puchong early to queue up before opening of the UNHCR office but were instead taken to a secluded area in Bukit Petaling. The cabbie ordered the four men to hand over their cash and belongings but the victim resisted. In the ensuing fight, he suffered cuts on this left hand and neck. He needed 13 stitches on his neck and five more on his hand. The cabbie left the men

THEY lay in wait outside nightclubs to target those getting into luxury cars after drinks. They would then ram the car from the rear along the way and pose as police officers to ‘settle’ the mishap. Anyone who refuses would have a gun pointed at them before the vehicle is driven away. Investigations into 10 cases along Jalan Duta, LDP Highway and Taman Tun Dr Ismail led Brickfields police to zero in on the identities of two car-jacking suspects whose photo-fits were released to the media yesterday. Police believe these men (pic) were also responsible for carjacking of prominent businessman Datuk Jeevanthiran Ramanaidu last Saturday. Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said the two suspects were identified from descriptions of them by victims and from CCTV and video surveillance cameras. Wan Bari said most cases took place during weekends and between 6am and 10am or 10pm-2am. He s ai d t he susp e c t s observed and trailed their targets and usually went for

three men in a dark alley in Chinatown, leaving him with two black eyes and a swollen face.

He had earlier boarded a taxi at 4.45am from Cheras to Kotaraya along Lebuh Ampang. He was, however, taken to a dark alley in Chinatown where the taxi driver dumped him by the roadside after meeting up with three men. The three men pounced on him and rep e ate d ly punched and kicked several times before relieving him of RM300, his mobile phone and backpack. Tenaganita executive director, Irene Fernandez, said her organisation would address the issue of taxi drivers preying on migrants to the taxi association soon. She said the choice of making a police report was with the victims.

Jeevanthiran, the younger brother of Masterskill Education Group Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Seri Edmund Santhara suffered a gunshot wound in the waist when one of suspects opened fire for not coming out of his car along Jalan Marof. Jeevanthiran was driving

to meet a friend in Bangsar when the incident occurred at midnight. As he approached Jalan Telawi, a car rammed his vehicle from the rear. Fearing something amiss, he did not stop and drove to Jalan Maarof where there were more people. When he stopped the car, the two suspects claiming to be a police officers went up to him and told him they wanted to settle the matter. "When the victim refused to alight from his car they began using vulgarities on him. When his friend arrived, the

victim got out of the car and told the men he would lodge a police report. One of the men then pulled out a gun and fired two shots," said Wan Bari. One of the suspects then drove off with the victim's car. Jeeventhiran was reported to be in stable condition. Wan Bari advised people to ask for the identification card of police officers if they felt suspicious. "The best is to drive straight to a police station, or at least stop at places where there is a crowd.”

When urging one to vote is 'offensive' INFORMATION, Communi cations and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Utama Rais Yatim (pic) said the video clip 'Undilah' which features his Barisan Nasional colleagues was “offensive”, hence unsuitable for broadcast. Bernama reports Rais said the video which was produced as a public service announcement by Pete Teo contained elements which offended segments of society. "The video clip a l s o c ont a i n s subliminal messages aimed at influencing the audience," he said after opening an arts appreciation programme in Pasir Salak near Teluk Intan yesterday. The video which stars Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, also features Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Rashid Shirlin and Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay. It is a rallying call for Malaysians to vote and features Pakatan Rakyat MPs such as Nurul Izzah Anwar, Tony Pua, Khalid Samad and

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. It also features celebrities such as Reshmonu, Namewee, Daphne Iking and Afdlin Shauki as well as sportsmen - badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei and rally driver Karamjit Singh, as well as corporate figures like former MAS managing director Datuk Tengku Azmil Zahruddin and AirAsia boss Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. Rais explained the withdrawal of the clip from the air waves earlier was because it had no approval from the Film Censorship Board (LPF). "LPF is not under my ministry but the Home Ministry, which decides on whether the clip can be shown," he said. Prior to this, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stated the clip could not be aired on television because it did not receive approval from LPF. Kota Belud MP Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan complained the clip contained "anti-establishment undertones".

'Unclog my drain' Bangsar resident's plea answered the same day 'Hotline' called Alam Flora which pledges to clear another problem... WITHIN hours of Hotline contacting Alam Flora, TOO LEE YOON of Bangsar has no more worries about a clogged drain flooding her home. She approached Hotline on Tuesday over the problem that had been plaguing her Jalan Taban 4 home which she suspected was caused by construction taking place at nearby Lorong Bukit Pantai. TOO says stones, pebbles and planks from the project site have blocked the drain and obstruct water flow which, in turn, floods her house's front porch whenever it rains. “Sometimes, water even overflows into the house itself." She says the problem has been there for years, but recent construction debris have exacerbated the problem the past month.

TOO contacted Alam Flora on Sept 21, but did not get a response over the matter. She says neighbours had also previously called the solid waste management company, but the problem was never solved. ● AN Alam Flora Sdn Bhd spokesman says the clogged drain has been cleared immediately. “We have sent our staff to tend to the problem and they have cleared the drainage, so that it flows well again.” Checks by the Hotline Roving Team on Wednesday revealed the drain had been cleared. Yesterday, The Roving Team met with an Alam Flora officer at the site and managed to highlight the sorry state of another drain in Lorong Bukit Pantai, adjacent to Jalan Taban 4.

much more worse the situation could get because the monsoon season is approaching, but thankfully, the problem has been resolved now."

'Unknown' phone bill fear A MAXIS user has a rude shock when he recently received a bill for a supplementary line — but what irks him most is the telco could not provide a breakdown of the charges. ABDUL HALIM, a postpaid service user for 10 years, subscribed to a supplementary line for his

charges he might have been billed for. "It could be for anything from international roaming, which I did not request for, Internet use or anything else. “If I am not informed of this, how can I avoid another ridiculously high bill again?”

● A MAXIS Berhad spokesman, who apologises for any inconvenience caused to ABDUL HALIM, says they have contacted and given him the itemised billing. “We have also activated the itemised billing for his supplementary line as per his request. The charges exceeded his credit limit due to

accumulated non-payment of his monthly charges and this has been resolved." Customers are encouraged to contact the telco at customercare@maxis.com.my or by calling 1800821123. Meanwhile, ABDUL HALIM says he has accepted the explanation and is pleased with the outcome.

Singapore struggles with fire Shutting down Shell's biggest plant may take two days

ROYAL Dutch Shell Plc is shutting its half-a-million barrels-per-day Singapore refinery and could also shut the linked chemical complex as firefighters struggle to contain a blaze that has been burning for more than a day. The plant is the largest Shell owns and makes up more than a third of Singapore's refining capacity. The city-state is Asia's crude and refined product trading hub and hosts the world's largest fuel oil market. Benchmark fuel prices across Asia are based on trade in Singapore, so interruptions in supply can trigger price moves out of proportion with the size of the refinery disruption. "We are focused on safety, and are going through the progressive shutdown of the refinery," Martijn van Koten, vice-president for manufacturing operations, told reporters at a briefing yesterday. Hard fight for 10th place Despite setbacks that could have demoralised others, Proton’s team IRC fought back valiantly to finish the weekend in 10th spot. On the first day of rallying, Giandomenico Basso was in strong 8th position and clawing back time in the shorter, more demanding stages but intercom failure on the final stage cost him almost five minutes. With the intercom on the blitz, the driver was unable to hear the guidance from his navigator, Mitia Dotta, and this caused an unexpected venture off-road that dropped him to 13th position from a field of 72. A former winner at San Remo, Basso set 8th fastest time in the opening 13.06km Coldirodi special stage to finish seven seconds adrift of stage winner Andreas Mikkelsen in the Skoda Fabia S2000. The Satria Neo S2000, however, did especially well along the

shorter 7.36km second special stage with Basso setting sixth fastest time. “I am obviously very disappointed but in rallying, we have come to accept the unexpected. There’s certainly a lot of catching up to do on the second day but overall, the Satria Neo S2000 had good pace and performance,” said Basso. Alternator problems caused further frustration to Basso but he fought back to the 10th spot and denied Swiss Peugeot privateer Gregoire Hotz the final point on the very last stage. The San Remo Rally was run over 13 special stages in the province of Imperia with a competitive distance of 225.77km.

My life as an endurance racer Fariqe Hairuman — driver with the PETRONAS Syntium Team

There is a misconception that racing is about being the fastest. For me, it's also about being the most consistent. I am Fariqe Hairuman and I am an endurance racer with the PETRONAS Syntium Team. The recently-concluded 2011 Merdeka Malaysia Endurance race or MMER was a special one for me. It was my 10th MMER. Although I have been racing in touring and endurance race categories for some years now, the MMER has always been a special highlight for me. This year was even more special as the race coincided with Hari Malaysia and we came with a brand new car — the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT3, an extension of PETRONAS' partnership with Mercedes in Formula One. It was a more powerful car and looked gorgeous and my teammates and I were in the car No. 28 leading for most of the race until, unfortunately, the car suffered a mechanical problem in the 10th hour. It was rolled back to the garage and our mechanics raced against time to fix it. By then, we had lost the lead and fallen quite far behind the Audi that was leading at the time. Since I had already done my final stint, it was nerve-wrecking watching my teammate and guest driver Bernd Schneider and Tatsuya Kataoka slowly bring the car up to third position. Suddenly, in the final hour, the leading Audi had a problem. Our sister car, which was second at the time behind the leading Audi, was suddenly now in the lead. It was unbelievable!

Watching the Audi team frantically trying to fix the problem, I was reminded of the time when I had the same heartbreak. It was the 2007 MMER where I was driving alongside former Formula One driver Hans Stuck and his son Johannes Stuck. We had been leading for more than 11 hours only to face mechanical failure in the final 45 minutes of the race! I remember noticing on the monitors how the car stopped all of a sudden. Although I recall feeling disappointed and frustrated, I also remember feeling extremely humbled when everyone came to us after the race to offer their support and encouragement. It did make me feel better to some extent and I don't know if I ever thanked everyone then, so thank you all. Back to the current race, the Audi's mechanics fixed the problems in a flash and the car was able to rejoin the race in second place. Our car was a bit too far behind to catch up and that was how the results stood at the end of the 12 hour race. For a lot of people, endurance racing may seem to be boring. But from the drivers' and teams' perspective, endurance races are an emotional roller-coaster. Because of the duration of these races — be it the MMER or the Super Taikyu Endurance Series in Japan — theyse are ultimate tests in so many respects. The long distances are trials of endurance for the machines and the entire crew and drivers.

They test our concentration as drivers and our ability to focus and be consistently quick every single lap. The best part is, you have to pit your wits against so many cars and also the elements, regardless of the time of day or night! That, for me is so much more exciting than any other category of racing. Mine is a career that started right here at home in Johor in the late 1990s. After racing the Johor race series, I was given the chance to race in the British Touring Car Championship before coming back to race in the Asian Touring Car Series in 2005. In 2007, racing took me to Japan where I competed in the Super Taikyu Endurance Series and continue to do so until today. That year was special as not only did I win the Asian Touring Car Series title, I travelled to Munich to receive a special recognition award from BMW for being the second youngest driver in the world and the youngest Asian ever to win a major touring car title. It was a humbling honour for me. To be amongst some of the best racing car drivers in the world like multiple

World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx and ex-Formula One driver Alex Zanardi was really special. When we came back to the MMER in 2008, I was joined by my Japanese teammates from the Super Taikyu Endurance Series but it was to be a year of drama as I was hit by another car. I wound up in hospital with my memory erased but even though I was out, it was good knowing that my teammates from the second car managed to secure a strong finish for the team. In 2009, the race favoured the PETRONAS Syntium Team and although I didn't win, both cars were able to achieve an unprecedented first and second win for the very first time. On that momentum, we entered the Dubai 24hour race — the Le Mans 24Hours. We came away with a class win and an overall 2nd place. Unfortunately, the 2010 MMER was another race for me when mechanical failure ended our race prematurely. To come back this year not just with our brand new Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT3 but also a win and a podium is awesome!

Packed with a big engine, large, leather-lined cabin and filled with all the toys you can think of, the Mitsubishi Pajero Exceed can be described with the same adjectives for a Range Rover, leaving out reference to being British of course. And of course it is not. It is much more than the Range Rover in some ways and a lot less in others. Thanks to the big V6 engine that rumbles lazily under the bonnet and soft suspension, the Pajero is an effortless cruiser, some may even go as far as to say that it is languid. Keep the engine running below 3,000 rpm and it stays quiet but work it hard and you will hear the whirr of a large V6 engine doing its best to slingshot the better part of two tonnes. Priced at RM285,333.50, the Pajero sits comfortably between entry level machines such as the Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner and Luxury Sports Utility Vehicles such as the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz ML and the Volvo XC90. The Pajero is best described as a premium 4x4 and this patent lack of pretensions about being an SUV is very reassuring to those who want a workhorse but want it to be a bit more comfortable than the average pick-up truck or truck-based off-roaders. Without the Toyota Land Cruiser to compete in the official market, the Pajero is the only vehicle that can offer peace of mind through official warranties. That said, a vehicle that is going to be used as a high mile-

age transport will use up their warranty mileage in no time but during that initial period, all bugs and glitches can be discovered and fixed under warranty. Although it is not cheap, the Pajero is not a vehicle that one would feel is too precious to go off-road and get stuck in the mud, it feels and looks like a proper tough guy that can take on anything and would even

The Malay Mail Friday 30 SEPTEMBER, 2011

Great show, boring race LET’S face it, city circuits are great for sponsors but lousy for fans. They are little more than high-speed parades of really expensive cars through tight corners and short straights that leave very little room for overtaking. Michael Schumacher tried to overtake and ended up in the barriers after nearly flipping his car over. Lewis Hamilton offered a bit of bravado but also found

the rear tyre of the car in front of him, this time it was Felipe Massa and the Brazilian was clearly not impressed. There rest of the overtaking consisted mainly of the race leaders passing asthmatic backmarkers. This doesn’t take away the impressive skill showed by Sebastian Vettel who pulled away from the rest of the field as if they all suffered a mental lapse and forgot where top gear was.

PLAGUED: The Lotus team did not do well

relish coming out of the jungle with a few scratches. This Pajero is worthy of the nameplate it carries over all the good qualities of toughness, dependability and reliability and adds a few measures of comfort to make it worth the extra money. The only question that remains is whether it can compete with all the grey-import Toyota Land Cruisers?

He sped away so far from the pack that at the end of the race he could even take it easy even when second place man, Jenson Button began clawing back more than a second at every lap in the last 10 laps. Although Vettel won, the show stealer was actually Force India with both cars in the top 10, Paul de Resta finishing sixth, ahead of Petronas Mercedes driver, Nico Rosberg and his team mate, Adrian Sutil who crossed the line in eight place. Team iconic black and gold Lotus liveried team Renault soldiered on with their chassis and saw high tyre wear slowing them down. In the end they had to be happy with 15th and 17th spot before packing up for Japan. Renault was also plagued by KERS failure and this made overtaking a lot harder than it

Lotus, F1's 10th most recognisable brand IF Lotus wants to pinch customers from the Premium Supercar segment from the likes of Porsche and Ferrari, they will have to make the brand more visible and attractive to the general public. Hence, their involvement in Formula One seems to be paying handsome dividends in terms of brand recognition. According to Dany Bahar, the CEO of Group Lotus, the Lotus brand ranks 10th in terms of brands that are seen and recognised within F1 and this is something that they are quite happy about. “You have to remember that when we started with our turnaround strategy, the Lotus brand was nowhere in terms of recognition among

fans of Formula One and now it is, on average in 10th spot. In some races, we were as high as sixth place in terms of recognisability. Lotus’ Parent company, Proton, is also supportive of the expo-

Nikaijaya Auto invested nearly RM1 million for the facility with a view to providing Suzuki customers a more rewarding ownership experience as well as lifestyle elements that exude the Suzuki brand personality. “Nikaijaya Auto adopted the new Suzuki showroom corporate identity to allow customers to enjoy, not just the facilities, but a complete after-sales service via Nikaijaya Auto’s service centre” said Shinya Yokokawa, deputy managing director of Suzuki Malaysia Automobile. Suzuki Malaysia recently scored exceptional results in the annual J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2011

already is around the tight and narrow circuit. Once the race was over, the aftershow was fantastic and the fact that the circuit was the city itself, race fans simply retired to one of the many watering holes and enjoyed themselves. Others made their way to the concert venue where they had the

chance to see top billings like Linkin Park, Shakira, Boy George, and others. The whole city was buzzing with F1 excitement and it made the round feel special. If you want a show, head to Singapore, but if you want a race, Sepang is still one of the best.

sure that Lotus is enjoying in Formula One and are keen to latch on to some of the attention that is generated on the ground on race weekends. In Singapore, Proton and Lotus put together an impressive display at the highly visible Clarke Quay and the little motor show attracted quite a lot of attention. While the number of visitors to the display was impressive, there was something that was even more heartening; they sold a very large number of merchandise in the process, indicating that the brand had not only captured people’s attention but they were also able to relate to it and consider it as an aspirational brand.

Suzuki opens Ipoh showroom WITH the brand steadily gaining popularity, Suzuki Malaysia Automobile, a dealership owned by Nikaijaya Auto, opened a Suzuki Showroom in Ipoh, Perak, last week. The Suzuki Nikaijaya Auto 3S centre is a 9,836sq ft facility located in Jalan Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh and encompasses both sales and service facilities. The showroom showcases all the Suzuki passenger car models that are available nationwide, and besides the complete six-bay Service Centre, the facility also boasts two dedicated discussion rooms and a spacious and comfortable waiting lounge with LCD TV and various lifestyle amenities.

CITY CIRCUIT: Though glittering, Singapore's show was little more than a high-speed parade

Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) study. Among the nine brands ranked in the study, Suzuki won the No.3 position with 806 points. This result exemplifies Suzuki Malaysia’s dedication to customer satisfaction as the top priority in its business operations.

YOKOKAWA: Showroom will provide Suzuki customers with a more rewarding experience

AN EX-RED DEVIL playing for the Red Giants. It can't get any better than that as former Manchester United star Jesper Blomqvist will don the Merah Kuning jersey when Selangor hosts Singapore in the Sultan of Selangor Cup at Shah Alam Stadium tomorrow (9pm). "I've heard that Selangor are a good team and are one of the top teams in this country. I hope I can play an important role in the match," said Blomqvist, 37. will be joined by former Liverpool central midfielder Jason McAteer. "I know our presence is to spice up the one day football fiesta but I am excited to play in a different environment," added the left winger. The duo will further boost the team, which includes the likes of prolific hitman Safee Sali, Amirulhadi Zainal and Amri Yahyah. Safee is banking on his two-week training stint with

Welsh club Cardiff City FC to give him the extra edge when playing against the Singaporeans. Prior to the main match, there will be an exhibition match involving veteran players from both sides. Local rock star Amy Search is set to entertain the crowd at the 10th edition of the tournament. Tickets are priced at RM10 and are sold at Quality Hotel, Concorde Hotel Shah Alam, Hard Rock Cafe KL and will also be available on match day at the venue.

KUALA LUMPUR: LAWN BOWLS

Safuan eager to reclaim title FORMER world No 1 Safuan Said is eager to reclaim his title at the World Bowls in Adelaide, Australia next year. Safuan won the last edition of the world meet in 2008 en route to leading the standings but he has lost valuable points since failing to partake in several ranking tournaments for the past two years. The Perak lad missed the tournaments as he was training in Australia. Australia's Leif Selby dominates the world standings with 1250 points while Safuan is placed second with 930 points. "I'm bullish of reclaiming my title. I used to lead the second-placed athlete by more than 1000 points when I was world No 1 and now I am behind with several hun-

dred points. It's achievable," said Safuan. "But I need to play in the World Singles, the World Cup and the World Bowls to achieve the target. I can't afford to miss any more ranking tournaments or I'll be left further behind." The national team were ranked third in the World Bowls in 2008 but failed to impress at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games last year. Safuan was met at the Bukit Kiara Lawn Bowls complex after the cheque presentation ceremony between Sime Darby Foundation and the Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) for the upcoming 6th Asia Pacific

Merdeka Singles, Mixed Paris and Triples Indoor Bowls Championship. The national body received RM386,896 from the plantation giants who are the title sponsors of the championship. Present at the ceremony were Sime Darby Foundation governing council member Tan Sri Dr Wan Mohd Z aid Mohd Nordin and foundation chief executive office Yatela Zainal Abidin. M L B F p r e s i d e nt Tu n Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid stressed he will be happy if the team finishes third in the World Bowls next year. "I hope Safuan can defend his title and I would like to see the team do better than finishing third. But even if they finish third, it's a fair result," added Ahmad Sarji.

Nishikori comfortable being Asia's best

By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

KEI NISHIKORI insists he does not feel the pressure of being Asia's top ranked player on the ATP circuit. "I've never felt that pressure on me. Asia's pool of players is growing stronger," said Nishikori. The 21-year-old was delighted to advance past the second round of the Malaysian Open at Putra Stadium after losing in the first round last year. Nishikori kept Asia's representation alive when he battled to a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Phillipp Petzschner of Germany. "Yes, playing two three-set matches may affect my performance but I'm a strong player. I'm confident that physically I can still play my game," added Nishikori. Despite being the better

Nishikori is currently coached by Brad Gilbert. The American has worked with Agassi, Andy Roddick and Andy Murray in the past.

'Sayonara' Sharapova MARIA SHARAPOVA'S effort to avenge her Wimbledon final loss to Petra Kvitova was brought to an abrupt end yesterday after she twisted an ankle in the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open. The Russian world No 2 was serving 40-15 up at 3-4 in an even first set when the injury struck. Sharapova received courtside treatment but decided to retire soon afterwards, giving the Czech a free ticket to the semifinals. "I hit a serve and then landed awkwardly on my left ankle. I felt a sharp pain and next thing I knew I was on the floor. It swelled up immediately and I knew there was no way I could continue," said Sharapova in a statement. "I am incredibly disappointed and in a lot of pain. I obviously really wanted to win and felt that I was playing well. "There's not much more I can say right now. I'm sorry for the tournament and my

Battle of Auckland Puma Contepomi expects gruesome contest when Scotland take on England

ARGENTINA captain Felipe Contepomi predicts a gruesome battle when traditional rivals England and Scotland clash in a Pool B encounter in Auckland tomorrow. The game could also determine whether the Pumas progress to the quarterfinals, with all three sides still in contention. "Having played against both, I think they're two very tight teams. It will be a gruesome battle," Contepomi told BBC Sport. "England are on the front foot but Scotland also have a chance. Anything can

happen, it's a World Cup." Argentina will know when they play Georgia in their final pool match on Sunday whether a simple win or a win with a bonus point will be necessary for them to advance. England top the group and only require a draw to qualify, while Scotland must win to keep their hopes alive. Contepomi believes the rivalry between the two countries makes the game doubly unpredictable. "Scotland and England have a big history — big battles. But history tells that Scotland can

beat them or England can take the advantage." The Argentines lost 13-9 to England but beat the Scots 13-12. He is familiar with the complicated mathematics that may be needed to decide which two teams progress from this pool. "If Scotland win without a bonus point and deny England a bonus point, and we don't win with a bonus point, we all finish with 14 points. If Scotland beats them without a bonus point to England, it will go on points difference between the three teams.

"We already won by one point and lost by four, so we are minus three and England would be minus more because they beat us by four and, if they lose to Scotland by more than seven, they are more than minus three." However, looking ahead to a game against Georgia his side are heavily fancied to win. "I think we just have to win," said the 34-year-old Contepomi, an influential flyhalf and kicker for the Pumas, who finished a creditable third in the 2007 edition in France.

Samoa prepare to face Boks hell

SAMOA know well the size of their task against defending champions South Africa in a Pool D match at North Harbour Stadium today. The Springboks require at least one point from their final pool match to secure a quarterfinal berth, while the Samoans must upset the South Africans with a bonus point win to advance. "This is our last chance and it will not be easy, but it will be a hell of a test,” said Samoa captain and hooker Mahonri Schwalger. "It will not be hard to motivate these guys, especially against the world champions. These are the games you want to play rugby for. You do not take these opportunities lightly." While the Samoans have lost all six of their previous encounters with South Africa, head coach Titimaea Tafua is adamant his men are capable of achieving what some see as the impossible. "We do believe we have a chance to win. We are confident," he said. Meanwhile, centre Eliota

Fuimaono Sapolu said a lot of people are talking about this being the best Samoan team ever. "Well, let's find out. There's no better way than playing the world champions," he said. Tafua has made just two changes to the side who beat Fiji 27-7 last Sunday, with David Lemi, who has not played a World Cup match since 2007, replacing Sailosi Tagicakibau at right

There's 15 of them and there's one of me — Russian lock Adam Byrnes commenting on their upcoming clash against Australia

wing, and Sapolu taking over at centre from Seilala Mapusua. South Africa head coach Peter de Villiers made seven changes to the starting XV who beat Namibia 87-0 last Thursday, and is happy to have the luxury of choosing from an almost fully fit squad. "It's the first time since our first game we have the privilege to select the team from

29 fit players,” he said. Lineout specialist Victor Matfield returns from a hamstring injury, and de Villiers believes the 34-year-old will be key to countering Samoa’s potent front row. "Samoa annihilated the Fiji scrums. Having Victor back in the lineout can be a great contest. He understands the systems and he inspires people around him." Flanker Heinrich Brussow said Samoa are a brute side, so it won't be easy. "If you play any of the Pacific Island teams, the setpieces are important. If you give them too much ball, they're very dangerous, so that's one thing we're focusing on." With an average age of 30 years and 51 days, Samoa will be fielding the oldest starting XV ever in a Rugby World Cup. While Sapolu concedes his teammates are weary, it has nothing to do with age. "There are a lot of guys who are playing their fourth game, their fourth 80 minutes," he said.

ROMANIA captain Marius Tincu (pic) urged the International Rugby Board (IRB) not to make the World Cup a two-tier competition. Critics of the current format have called on the IRB to restructure the tournament, with the lesser nations facing each other in a separate competition running alongside the main World Cup. But Tincu disagrees and maintains that the socalled minnows have provided more of a test for the more established countries at this year's tournament. "It's not good for rugby if they change the tournament," he said. "Because if you don't play against the big teams, you don't go up. You stay at the same level and I think the IRB's goal is to help the little nations go up," he said. Romania or ''The Oaks'' lost all four of their pool matches but they have improved considerably in the past decade. They lost to England 134-0 at Twickenham in 2001, but showed how far they have progressed since that result by scaring Scotland in their opening result at this year's tournament. The Romanians were leading with seven minutes remaining before two late Scottish tries secured them a 34-24 win. Tincu said performance and other strong showings from the emerging

nations proved that the gap was narrowing and it is important for the IRB to continue investing in lesser nations.

BORN TO DO IT: Messi is on the verge of becoming Barcelona's highest goal scorer

moose@mmail.com.my

HOLA! Don't bet against this. Little Argentine wizard Lionel Messi to break Barcelona's alltime goal scoring record for the club set by Cesar Rodriguez's tally of 235 while playing in the 1940s and 1950s. Messi has already scored 194 times after the two goals he struck in the 5-0 win over BATE Borisov in the Champions League on Wednesday to equal Budapest-born attacker Ladislau Kubala, who played in the 1950s, as the second highest scorer of all time. La Pulga (the Flea) is naturally delighted. "I am very satisfied I have equalled someone who has been so important for this club in the past. I am really happy," Messi told Marca. "I knew that I could equal Kubala, but I didn't think about it before the match. I just want to do a good job and help the team. It would be great if I break the all-time record, but I'm not getting carried away and I'm staying relaxed." Barca sports chief Andoni Zubizarreta is amazed by Messi's statistics. Who isn't at the rate he is going? "Messi is a player whose statistics you see from players about to retire, but he is only 24," said Zubizarreta. Messi is also on top of the

Primera Liga's scoring chart at the moment with eight goals from five matches. And El Loco expects him to score at least one of two in Barca's away match against bottom side Sporting Gijon on Monday (2am) if he is not given a break by manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola. And he is also on top of the list for assists with five. This shows he is also handy creating chances for his teammates. Interestingly, Messi is now behind the new ''smart boot'' which will allow amateur players to compare their performances with the game's greats. He has spent months developing the world's first intelligent football boot with manufacturers Adidas, which could now take the game by storm, the Daily Mail reported. The boots record playerspecific data with an innovative miCoach Speed Cell chip placed in the cavity of the outsole, which captures 360 degree movements and measures key performance metrics such as speed and distance. The boots — which store data including speed, average speed, maximum speed, number of sprints, distance, distance at high intensity levels and active time for up to seven hours after a match or training

— transmit on-pitch information to tablets, PCs and Macs using a wireless link. Very technical, huh? D e spite c o st i ng £ 2 4 5 (RM 1,300), including the chip, the boots are set to prove to be popular with amateur players who will be able to compare their statistics to superstars like Messi for the first time. And now for a bit of gossip. Barca centreback Gerard Pique admits he is dressed by girlfriend Shakira. However, he insists his modelling is only a bit of fun and won't interfere with his football. Really? "All men are guided always by our partners. Women have always had more style than men or at least have understood more about clothes," he told FHM. "A good opinion from your partner is always welcome."

On modelling, he said: "It is simply a hobby. I like fashion and feel good about it. But football comes first and it's what I like to stay focused on. Fashion is always in the background." Meanwhile, Real Madrid fans must be happy that Brazilian midfielder Kaka seems to have regained the kind of form expected from a player of his quality. Kaka, 28, produced a ''Manof-the-Match'' performance against Ajax in the Champions League at home on Tuesday and is delighted to have repaid the faith shown by club president Florentino Perez and manager Jose Mourinho. "I am indebted to Real," said Kaka. "It would have been easy to have left, but that is why I chose to raise my game. I have a dream of succeeding at Real which I want to realise.

"Many reports claimed Madrid wanted to sell me, but Perez told me he wouldn't and kept his word. I owe a lot to the president. Three parties decided on me staying. I did not want to leave, Mourinho did not want me to go and the club did not want to sell me either. "After the game against Ajax, Florentino gave me a hug and congratulated me. He has always supported us, even through bad times." Kaka arrived from AC Milan in a €68.5 million (RM289m) move in the summer of 2009 as one of Perez's first signings after returning to Real as president, but a mixture of injuries and poor form initially prevented him from living up to his price tag. But can Kaka maintain his form? Adios!

Coni chief urges Roma to make most of Olimpico I TA L IA N O l y m p i c Committee (Coni) president Gianni Petrucci says Roma should make the most of the Stadio Olimpico until they have found a new home. Roma are known to be looking for a site in Rome in which to build their own

stadium, allowing them to leave the Olimpico, which is owned by Coni and which they share with city rivals Lazio. New American owner Thomas DiBenedetto met with Petrucci earlier this week but now the Coni chief wants the club to make

better use of their current home. "We'll provide whatever we can for Roma because they're a great club and they approached us in the right way," Petrucci told journalists yesterday. "I told the Roma president that we're not against

them constructing a new stadium. "But in the meantime they can better make use of something that already exists, the Stadio Olimpico. "No team in Europe has a changing room like the ones in the Olimpico. "When the law on stadia

is approved, it will be only right that Roma build their own stadium." In Italy, only Juventus own their stadium and they only moved there this season. All other stadia in Italy are owned by the city and rented by the clubs who use them. — AFP

Love thy neighbour Another thriller at White Hart Lane on Sunday to enjoy

THERE were plenty of candidates for the ''Game of the Season'' in the 2010-2011 edition of the Premier League. It's interesting to note that two of the nominees came from the same fixture. In November 2010, Tottenham went to Emirates Stadium and came away with all three points on Arsenal soil for the first time in 17 years. In April, the two sides met at White Hart Lane, and served up a frenzied feast of frantic feisty football, the game ending in a 3-3 draw. They were two remarkable matches, made all the more extraordinary by the fact that Arsenal were two goals to the good in both of them, and were ultimately pegged back. Statistically, you could say Arsene Wenger's side squandered five points over the two encounters from eminently winnable positions, and while defeat at The Emirates must have been galling for the Gunners (especially bearing in mind the fact that they were comfortably in front at the break and cruising) the two points dropped at The Lane proved to be even more significant. They effectively put paid to any hopes Arsenal had of challenging for the title. More often than not in the Premier League era, Spurs have resembled lambs to the slaughter in meetings with their North London neighbours. Last

GameOn with Andrew Leci season appeared to witness a change in the tectonic foundations of one of the bitterest and most long standing rivalries in English football. It all started in 1913, and got particularly fractious in 1919, when Spurs were convinced that Arsenal had taken their place in the old First Division by nefarious means — it's a long story. The fact that Arsenal started life as a football club in South London and then moved to become Spurs' closest neighbours exacerbated the situation (too close for comfort, clearly). In the early days, such was the extent of the acrimony, that matches often descended into the kind of near violence that would have produced a rash of red cards today. In the Premier League era though, it's fair to say that Arsenal have had Spurs' number — even introducing a 'St Totteringham's Day' — the point in the season at which Spurs, mathematically, couldn't possibly finish above Arsenal in the league. This was indicative of the confidence level in the

Zabaleta says squad must help Tevez MANCHESTER CITY defender Pablo Zabaleta yesterday said teammates needed to help Carlos Tevez after his apparent refusal to play in the midweek Champions League loss at Bayern Munich. City have suspended Tevez pending a full investigation but Zabaleta insisted a hand of friendship has to be extended to his compatriot. "We need to try to help Carlos," said Zabaleta. "He has been an important player for us in the last two years but maybe this season he has had more games on the bench. "Sometimes that is difficult, and more so for strikers, who need to play, need to score, need to feel confidence."

Arsenal camp, that they would better, and continue to exceed, their rivals' achievements. As I mentioned earlier though, the situation has changed of late, and perhaps, for the first time in many a season, Spurs will go into Sunday's north London derby as marginal favourites. Arsenal's problematic start to this campaign has been well documented, as they continue to come to terms with the departure of their two best players Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. It reflects the fact that Arsenal have become what is termed a ''selling club'', with top players electing to pursue honours elsewhere — presumably on the basis that they don't expect The Emirates' trophy cabinet to be replenished any time soon. There is no doubt that Arsenal, as a team, have been a joy to watch, and play the kind of football that delights purists, even throughout the course of the last six unsuccessful (in terms of picking up silverware) seasons. With new players beginning to bed in though, there

are encouraging signs for the Gunners, especially after last weekend's comfortable win against Bolton. Spurs for their part, endured a difficult start to the season, suffering heavy defeats against the two Manchester clubs, while the Luka Modric saga took twists, turns and its toll on the club. Significantly though, after personnel issues were sorted out, Spurs have kicked on well, and can cite two decent away maximums in a recent three-game winning streak that also includes a 4-0 thumping of Liverpool. T h e c ont e x t f or t h i s Sunday's derby could hardly be more fascinating, despite the fact that we're not even one-sixth of the way into the season. It's a fixture that always captures the imagination, and invariably provides plenty of goals and excitement. Passions will be at fever pitch (allusion intended) for the partisans this weekend, while the neutrals will be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy one of the most compelling fixtures the Premier League has to offer.

"Everybody always wants to play, maybe it's like that," Zabaleta said in trying to rationalise Tevez's behaviour — though the striker insists the whole incident was a misunderstanding. "We need to accept that sometimes we are on the bench but we always have to be looking to get into the team," said Zabaleta, who also watched from the sidelines as City went down 2-0. Fellow Argentine Sergio Aguero, a close friend of Tevez, regretted the falling out between the latter and the club. "Carlos is a great player but obviously I am not inside his mind, to know his thoughts and opinions." — AFP

Death threats sent to Montolivo RICCARDO MONTOLIVO has received death threats after refusing to renew his contract at Fiorentina. The Viola directors have accused the midfield playmaker of misleading the club so he can leave on a Bosman at the end of the season after Fiorentina accepted a bid from Roma in the summer which the player turned down. Now police are investigating several messages posted on the 26-year-old's Facebook page. Fiorentina chief executive Sandro Mencucci said: "The threats to Montolivo? I want to brand this behaviour as stupid. The threats were made a week ago by an imbecile."

Chelsea owner keen on Jovetic

FIORENTINA hope to close a new contract agreement with Stevan Jovetic (pic) within the next few weeks. The Montenegro international is a favourite of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and his agent couldn't guarantee the player staying in Florence. Fiorentina hope to open talks over a new deal in mid-October with the view to securing Jovetic's future before the January market opens. A five-year deal worth around £40,000-a-week — plus bonuses — is being drawn up by Viola chiefs.

Clubs keep tabs on Adler BAYER LEVERKUSEN goalkeeper Rene Adler's contractual situation is being followed closely by Bundesliga rivals Schalke and Hamburg. Talks with the 26-year-old over a new deal have reportedly ground to a halt due to the Germany international's excessive demands. And with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, his future at the Bay Arena is very much up in the air. Both Schalke and Hamburg have shown the biggest interest in Adler, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation to his knee problem, which has prevented him from making an appearance this season.

ARSENAL midfielder Alex Song insists Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor will be keen to impress against his former club in the big north London derby at White Hart Lane on Sunday. And the Gunners are looking to build on last weekend’s 3-0 win over Bolton at home. Spurs, on the other hand, are aiming to make it four wins in a row after a run in which Adebayor has been integral to their success. The 27-year-old Togolese has scored three goals in his first three Spurs games and will meet Arsenal for the first time as a Lilywhite. For the record, Adebayor played Arsenal as a Manchester City player and received a two-match suspended ban for a provocative celebration when he scored against Arsene Wenger’s side in 2009. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has ruled William Gallas, another former Gunner, out of the clash but Adebayor is poised to start. Song joined Arsenal in the same year as Adebayor and retains a lot of respect

Roving with Blackburn Juniors could earn stint with The Riversiders

THE English Premier League “invasion” continues as three of our national junior footballers could enjoy training stints with Blackburn Rovers FC. The trio — Muhammad Amin Asraf Yaakob, Shakir Zufayri Ibrahim and Mohamad Faris Shah Rosli — are set to leave for Pune, India next week as they participate in the RoverStar 6-a-side U-16 tournament which kicks-off on Oct 6. Five outstanding players from the tournament will be selected to undergo an attachment programme with Blackburn Rovers in the UK. The players — all from Bandar

Penawar Sports School — arrived at Wisma FAM yesterday. They were accompanied by teacher Khairuddin Saisi who will also join the players in India. The Malaysian boys will join three other Hong Kong youngsters and a couple more from India to form an All-Star team. Blackburn Rovers’ head of football development in Asia, Serbegeth Singh, admitted they were pressed for time due to the short notice but is extremely happy to get the FA of Malaysia (FAM) involved in

the programme. “We approached FAM and we’re pleased they responded to us quickly despite the short time frame,” said Serbegeth, who is better known as Shebby. “This is the first time we (FAMBlackburn) are working together and I do hope to see more local youngsters given a shot playing regional tournaments or even enjoying stints with Blackburn Rovers,” he added. FAM general-secretary Datuk Azzudin Ahmad confirmed the participation of the Malaysian youths for the tournament as the national

body are now in the midst of securing the players’ visas. Travelling expenses and accommodation will be borne by the organisers of the tournament. The stint with Blackburn is an addition to the many opportunities Malaysian players have had with foreign teams. Among those who tasted football in the UK include top national hitman Safee Sali, who just returned from a two-week stint with Welsh outfit Cardiff City, while Bunyamin Umar and Badrul Bakhtiar enjoyed training sessions with Chelsea in 2008.
