These include asking City Hall officers whether he could have a street name dedicated to his mother for her birth-
day; as well as seeing if he could get his car out of being towed without any proof of ownership. Despite having to endure at least 20 minutes of nonsensical questioning per person, an overwhelming majority of the staff handled the reporter with extreme patience and displayed exemplary courtesy. The staff were also good-natured enough to take it in stride when we eventually revealed our purpose. Now, let’s hope they keep it up!

Yong the master guitar man

AFTER Jeffrey Yong made his first guitar from a do-it-yourself kit in 1985, he hasn't looked back since. The self-taught guitar-maker and former instructor, a lover of all things guitar since secondary school in the 1970s, went on to set up his own workshop in Pandan Indah Industrial Park, creating various stringed instruments using traditional carpentry tools. Yong, who hails from KL, also researched Malaysian exotic wood to achieve the perfect guitar sound. His favoured choice of wood is from the Nyatah, MonkeyPod and Angsana trees or natural wood to conjure sweet sounds from his guitar masterpieces. "I found Blackwood and

"Besides acoustic and electric guitars, I also craft my own stringed instruments which I call the Sapelele, Gambustar and the Sundatang," said Yong, 53. He was also invited to teach at the Luthier School International, California. His guitars were exhibited for the first time at the 2007 Healdsburg Guitar Festival. He also lectures on Guitar Technology at the National Academy of Arts, Culture & Heritage and is president of local non-governmental organisation WARISMA, which promotes performing arts.

Students and stress Pilot study findings to be made known on Wednesday
THE seven-month pilot study to assess mental health of secondary school children is now in its final stages. Mental Health Promotion Advisory Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye (pic) said findings of the study, initially undertaken in March, would be wrapped up soon and tabled at the council meeting on Wednesday. Lee, who is also the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman, said the meeting will be chaired by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Liow Tiong Lai. ings are. However, I believe, the Health Ministry will suggest to schools solutions to overcome mental health problems depending on the severity of the situation," he said. Lee said the study comprised sets of questionnaires targeted at secondary school students. "Not all students were involved in the study. We prepared specific students who answered the questionnaires in stages during the seven-month period," he said.
In January, Liow reportedly announced the study would be undertaken in selected secondary schools following a rising number of youths suffering from stress and depression. The study, called 'Healthy Mind Programme', was aimed at conducting mental health screening for symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress (DAS) in six secondary schools including one in Sabah. Those detected with symptoms of stress, anxiety or depression will be given
appropriate interventions which include counselling and mental health coping skills. Liow said the ministry survey showed the number of people seeking medical attention for mental health problems was 10.6 per cent in 1996 but rose to 11.2 per cent, with 6.4 per cent having considered suicide, in 2006. Liow said a high number of those seeking treatment in 2006 were those aged between 16 and 19, and those aged between 70 and 74.

Scenario 1: Reclaiming mum's towed car I CHOSE counters that were free so that I wouldn't be interrupted. My number was quickly called and I was met with an enforcement officer named Reza (pic, below). I told him my mother was out of the country and I couldn't ask her for the car registration or insurance papers because I had taken the car without her permission. I said she would kill me if she found out as I had been responsible for the car being towed five times this year. "How many times?" asked Reza, almost in disbelief. "Five," I said, maintaining a straight face. Luckily, Reza did not comment on my ridiculous b e h a v i o u r. Instead, he tried to think of a way to prove to the impound lot that I was the driver. "Can you give any other proof that the car belongs to your mother? Maybe some personal documents such as business or identification cards in the car's glove compartment or boot, anything like that?" he asked. I told him there was a pair of my shoes in the car boot I could clarify the make and size of, if he wished. "No," he replied. I told him I could name the CD albums in the car, but he declined that too. I then told him I could run back home and grab a photograph of me with the car... "Maybe the photograph might help..." he said. "Does it matter that it was taken when I was 10 years old?" I asked. He hesitated, so I offered to show him a whole photo album of me growing up, to see how I had developed over the years. He sat silently for a moment before he muttered "No", slowly shaking his head and
faced with absurd situations, peppered with ridiculous questions. Armed with wit, this The Malay Mail reporter yesterday attempted to test the patience of City Hall staff. After a full day traipsing the corridors of the council's Jalan Raja Laut headquarters, here are the findings:
smiling slightly. As I rambled on and pleaded with him, he nodded, listened attentively and did not interrupt or raise his voice, although he probably thought I was a complete fool. He told me if I could find enough proof, I could apply for my fine to be reduced, or request a 14-day grace period to pay my fines if I was short of funds. Though his smile faded with disbelief at times, Reza continued to be polite and sympathetic throughout our 20-minute encounter, eventually saying that his hands were tied as my issue was beyond his jurisdiction. He told me where I should go, drew me a map to get there and gave me directions, tips and phone numbers I could call to find more help. I thanked him and left. Half hour later I returned and revealed I was a reporter on assignment, where I had to 'test the system'. Reza burst out laughing. "If you had been rude or if there were a lot of people waiting, I would have been sterner!" he said. He also revealed he has a 'system' in place in dealing with problematic customers. "I'd note their licence plate and alert my bosses, to a possible complaint before it happens," he said slyly.
Scenario 2: Naming a main road after my mother I THOUGHT if I could rename a main road after my mother, she would not be as angry about the car. of the city, well known, and clean," I said. She explained clearly and thoroughly, why that could not be done. She told me how road names had to be approved by a committee. "I don't think the offices along the main roads will be happy if we suddenly change their address," she said, in a ver y motherly tone. "I might start getting a lot of complaints if changing road names was so easy to do." She said due to procedures and regulations, roads could only be renamed after historical figures. And they have to be dead. "Is your mother a historical figure?" she asked, probably
already knowing the answer. We then discussed the 'criteria' for someone to be considered a historical figure. "My mother has done a lot for our family, and I love her very much," I said. "I understand," said Azizah, "but however much you love your mother, and I'm sorry to say this, she has not quite contributed enough to the country." "I think we should honour normal people like her," I insisted. "Maybe," said Azizah, "But she is also still very much alive, right?" she countered. She had me there. Azizah said as a mother herself, she was happy to see a son who loved his mother so much. "Can I at least reserve a road to be put in her name if ever the two criteria were met?" I asked.
For that, I was given a kind but firm "No." Acting in desperation, I then asked for an unnamed alley anywhere in the city, if City Hall could spare one. Still no. I offered to 'adopt' a road in my mother's name, saying I would pay monthly for its maintenance. "That's quite interesting, but no, I cannot just give up parts of KL to people," she said, while literally pointing to the city map behind her desk. We then discussed road ownership where I learned that if I build a few houses, sold them and prepared a 20-foot wide road, I could propose the road name when I handed it over to City Hall. The process would take six months after handing over the road. As she was talking, I believe she was trying to distract me from my original cause. We toyed with the idea for a while, discussing the number of houses I would need and if apartment units counted as houses. Azizah advised me on acceptable names that I could submit for roads and buildings. We had to play around with my mother's name as it was 'too colonial'. However, as I had no immediate plans to become a developer, we dropped that talk after a while. She told me I could not easily rename an existing building and if I wanted to, I would have to go to another department. "Some people do that without applying for a permit. Actually, we probably should fine them," she hinted. Throughout our conversation, Azizah was kind, friendly as well as knowledgeable. She even praised me for my ideas, saying she would propose them to the committee. She also gave me her contact details and took down mine in case I had any enquiries. I felt absolutely terrible for deceiving this nice and dedicated lady. When I came back later and told her the truth about my undercover assignment,
Azizah laughed and said after I had left, she had actually inquired from another department about naming a house after my mother. "You don't need a permit or anything, just hire someone to make a sign." She even suggested a name for my house.
The best and the rest ROSE LIYANA (pic, below) at the customer enquiry counter was friendly, cheerful, and efficient, when I approached her. I told her I wanted to do two things – apply for a business licence and rename a street. She listened carefully to my questions, left and when she came back, she gave me forms and said she had arranged to have someone meet me upstairs. Then with a smile, she gave me precise directions all in a minute or two. Speechless by her efficiency, I had no choice but to leave. However, the officers at the security counter were stern and unsmiling, as was the first officer I approached at the customer enquiry counter. Good job City Hall, but there is, of course, still room for improvement.

A security guard at Wisma Consplant in SS16 thought a bomb had gone off when he heard an explosion at the Empire Shopping Gallery, early yesterday morning. The guard, a Nepalese who identified himself as Rajun, was patrolling Wisma Consplant, an office building opposite the Empire Shopping Gallery with Malaysian colleague, Iskandar. "I was on patrol at the back of Wisma Consplant about 3.30am when there was a loud explosion. At first, I thought a bomb had gone off in front of the Sime Darby building nearby," Rajun told The Malay Mail. "Iskandar immediately called me via walkie-talkie to say it was the Empire building and I saw the damage caused by the blast when I rushed to the front." Hairi Abdul Hamid, a sales assistant at Tangs shop at the Empire building, said he was shocked when he reported for work yesterday morning. "The windows of the supermarket were all broken and when my boss saw me, he told me there would be no work as the building would be closed for several days," said Hairi.

Complex closed for one week

A CAR repossessor is fighting for his life after 12 shots were fired at him by a gunman at a roadside food stall in Kepong yesterday. In the 5.40pm incident, two men on a motorcycle stopped near the stall and one of them fired the shots which wounded a 47-year-old identified only as Subramaniam, and grazed the legs of two other stall customers. Kuala Lumpr deputy CID chief ACP Khairi Arasa said Subramaniam was having a drink alone at a table. "According to witnesses, the pillion rider fired up to 12 shots and the gunman and his accomplice on a blue Yamaha RXZ were both wearing full-face helmets," he said, adding the motorcycle number could not be ascertained. "A passerby took Subramaniam to Hospital Selayang and he's now in critical condition. We believe the gunman used a semi-automatic pistol and the bullets also grazed the legs of an Indonesian woman in her 20s
Jewellery theft motive of 'clean killers'

Murugan, 36, said only a pair of earrings and some petty cash were missing from a cupboard in the house.
"We believe the suspects thought there would be jewellery in the house as during the Ruthu Sadungu, some relatives presented jewellery to the 13-year-old granddaughter," said Murugan. "I think the robbers got angry because of the lack of loot but that was no reason for them to kill her." A post-mortem on Thanaletchumy is scheduled for today.

Her body was discovered at 11.30am on Tuesday by one of her five sons, K. Krishnan, 36, a factory maintenance worker in Mantin, Negri Sembilan. She lived there with another son, his wife and their children, and all of them were away at work or at school during the incident. Thanaletchumy has three other sons and two daughters, and the 13-year-old granddaughter is the offspring of one of her sons.

Mum nearly loses toddler in carjack incident
A WOMAN nearly lost her 14-month-old son in a carjacking incident in Jalan Kuching here last night. According to Bernama, Tan Lin Chiang, 26, was heading from Selayang to her home in Taman Wahyu with her son, Ong Chen Hau, at 9.15pm when a car with four men inside knocked into the rear of her Honda Accord. "I pulled to the side and got out, but feeling uneasy, I got back into my car," she said. "Three of the men came up and pulled me out of the car and drove off with my son inside." Tan said a taxi driver passing by came to her aid. "He called up my husband and told him what had happened. He then sent me to my husband's place in Jinjang," she said. About 45 minutes later, she succeeded in calling her handphone which was left behind in her car. It was answered by someone in a restaurant in Jinjang. "The person told me a little boy was abandoned at the five-foot way in front of the restaurant. "My husband and I rushed to the restaurant and found our son still strapped in his baby seat. The men left him behind together with my handphone and handbag there." She said although she lost her car, she was glad her son was safe.
Fifth bomb victim dies A FIFTH Malaysian has died from the bombings in Sungai Golok, Southern Thailand, on Sept 16. Wireman Chan Yew Soon, 63, died at the Haadyai Hospital in Songkhla at 7.30am local time yesterday. Mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said yesterday the delay was because of the removal of old utility pipes owned by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas). "The old asbestos pipes were detected midway during construction work and Syabas has appointed a contractor to remove the pipes," he said. The asbestos pipes eluded metal detection devices before earthworks began. "The traffic lights have been ready since Aug 22 and test runs were conducted." KL: Unhealthy to have two sets of criminal laws (Sept 26)

THE Islamic hudud law is for specific crimes and is applicable to the few criminals that commit them. I am sure all ordinary lawabiding citizens, some 27 million of us, should not be afraid of such a legislation which basically sets limits ordained by Allah, and deterrent punishments for specific offences, namely, theft, robbery, illicit sex, alcohol consumption and apostasy. The apparent worry of so
many people, both among Muslims and non-Muslims, emphasises the point that hudud is a very effective deterrent. That is the intention to deter people from committing these crimes. Deterrence is more effective than punishment. For example, we have the mandatory death penalty for those involved in the selling of drugs, but the deterrent effect is not there, thus nobody pays heed to the
law and punishment. There is misunderstanding among the Malaysian population about hudud simply because of ignorance. In Malaysia, we are not aware of the fact there are more death penalties for crimes committed under Malaysian criminal laws than what is permitted under the hudud system. The role of judges in the implementation of hudud is totally different from their role in Malaysian criminal law.
In hudud, the judge has to do his best to save the accused, to save him or her from being punished; while the prosecutor must serve the victim. Whereas in the criminal law system, the judge is just a passive moderator and has no real power to do anything, but just accept what both parties present in court. He h a s n o p o w e r t o insist certain matters b e b r o u g ht f o r w a r d a s evidence if these are not men-
tioned by the parties. The punishments under the Malaysian criminal law are set by Parliament and are nonnegotiable, while in hudud, the victim has a role in choosing agreeable punishment. In criminal law, the government gets all the benefits, but in hudud, the victims get the benefits because they are the ones who suffer and, in some cases, it is a win-win situation for all. There are many other
aspects of hudud that can be highlighted, but not within this limited forum. Above all, as have been done during the times of Prophet Muhammad and his companions, most, if not all of those punished under hudud, could be counted on our fingers. On top of that, they were all willing and insisted on being punished instead of punisment being imposed upon them. Nawawi

OUR road signs are horrible. Sometimes, they appear just before a turning, which makes it dangerous to turn. Those responsible also like to plant trees just in front of these signboards. And there is no continuity. If you try to follow a sign, the name of your destination suddenly disappears halfway, so you don't know whether to move on or turn. I always lose my way in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya and, as one reader commented, it is impossible to get out of that place!
For example, they would show the name of the town Dengkil in big letters with an equally big left turn arrow. Underneath it, however, is a tiny "1km". On top of that, the sign is placed just before another leftturn junction which leads you to anywhere but Dengkil! Then, you have to start all over again, turning round and round, kilometre after kilometre, before you are back to the same road again. It's really frustrating! Dan

Google+ traffic up 1,269 per cent JUST a week after going public to mainstream web users, social networking site Google+ is giving Facebook reason to worry. According to web traffic tracking firm Experian Hitwise, growth in visitors to the site has grown by 1,269 per cent since the site invited users to join without an invite from a friend. On the second day of a long-awaited manslaughter trial, the court also heard Murray, 58, claimed repeatedly the pop icon was in good health in the days and weeks before his death on June 25, 2009. The most gripping testimony though came from Michael Amir Williams, Jackson's personal assistant for two years leading up to his death aged 50 from an overdose of the powerful sedative propofol. He recalled the phone call from Murray alerting him that something had gone terrible wrong.

The singer, who was in the US when the riots broke out, said more needs to be done to find out why they happened. "They certainly didn't seem to have a focus in the way I am told the riots of the early 1980s did," he told NME's sister paper Uncut. Mamat vs Namewee Director fends off backlash from brickbat he threw at ‘Nasi Lemak 2.0’ filmmaker

I am merely exercising my right to speak out on what I believe is true, and which I feel affects me as a Malay and as a Muslim.” That was the response of 48-year-old film director Mohamad Mohd Khalid — affectionately known as Mamat Khalid — in retort to the reaction received from the strong comments he made about new director Namewee. Mamat, one of the most expressive filmmakers in the country, recently lashed out at Namewee, an independent filmmaker who rose out of the controversy of his homemade YouTube videos before graduating to his debut feature in Nasi Lemak 2.0. “I was disturbed, as a

Muslim call for prayer) and the government and then renamed the song Negarukuku. A month later, Namewee issued a public apology to the government and Malaysians. The MCA accepted the apology while then Minister of Information Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin urged Malaysians to forgive and forget. The Cabinet, however, rejected his apology and following his return to Malaysia in 2008, Namewee was questioned by the police. But all went quiet after that. Namewee continued to air his views on YouTube — a joke that was even played up in Nasi Lemak 2.0, and this was interspersed with other social and political satire. “He may be misguided for thinking it wouldn’t hurt anyone, but we have felt the need to speak out. We understand we live in a multiracial society that should not push limits that could affect stability,” explained Mamat, the award-winning funnyman who also has been known for his honest outbursts. “We all have our respective concerns when it comes to our own race and religion, but what he did abused the very ethics and spirit of being a citizen of Malaysia. One has to remember that we are a Muslim country, homogenous in nature, and you should not touch on such matters.” Mamat stressed he did not lash out at Nasi Lemak 2.0 as Namewee’s film was not the point of contention and that he was not jealous of the Chinese director’s work which, despite its limited release and not being under the country’s compulsory screening scheme, has netted over RM5 million. “Again, the focus is on him and his words. Nothing else.” Mamat, who to date, has been involved in the making of almost a dozen movies, including several blockbusters such as Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah and the upcoming Apokalips, said he was open to the idea of meeting Namewee to talk things over but he still harbours the hope that the Muar-born rapper would eventually be remorseful over his past actions “Let’s put it this way. I have nothing personal against his work, but he should realise that at the end of the day, no matter how you may feel about something, there are the sensitivities of others you have to consider too. “Again, I say Namewee has to understand, and truly apologise for his actions before he can truly be accepted and forgiven. Lip service alone is never enough.”

Now, that would certainly be a real food adventure for him. The Used certainly has a colourful history. For instance, trying to form a rock band in a large Mormon population of Orem, Utah, would be like transforming a hardcore rocker into a crooning Backstreet Boy. But The Used pulled through when they signed to Warner Bros/Reprise Records in 2001. In the same year, the band was founded by Branden Steineckert (formerly on drums but no longer with the band), Quinn Allman (guitars) and Jeph Howard (bassist).

Their latest album, Vulnerable will tentatively be released in February next year. When it comes to their name, it’s pretty simple, as McCracken explained.
“We’ve all been used in our lives. The name represents how we feel about being used and also others who’ve been used by others,” he said. The band added “The” as they discovered that another band in Boston had already trademarked the name “Used”. The band members themselves have been used and abused by struggling with poverty, homelessness and drugs

in their past but have emerged as mature and better people with a slightly philosopical view to life. “We’ve grown as artistes and individuals. Our skills have improved and I’d like to believe we have become better people through the years,” he explained. Nowadays, The Used are just regular guys who like to take showers and have immense patience, but McCracken himself tragically witnessed the ultimate lethal consequence of drugs when his pregnant girlfriend died from an overdose in 2004. During that time, the band released In Love and Death as a memory and reference to her passing as well as McCracken's immense grief over the tragedy. Another hard hit was when they had to let go of former band founder Steineckert while working on Lies for the Liars over a conflict of interest. Steineckert has since been replaced by Dan Whitesides. While The Used’s musical style has been labelled as having various sub-genres of rock, namely emo, screamo, or alternative rock, McCracken said dead-on straight, “We’re a ROCK band and we’ve always been.” With that out of the way, McCracken himself has diverse musical influences like Elton John, Kurt Cobain, David Bowe, John Lennon and Ozzy Osbourne (who could have been McCracken’s father-in-law! (See box, left). For Vulnerable, produced
under the band’s own label, Dental Records, McCracken said 17 songs have been recorded and they have yet to hear the finished project.

OLYMPIC COUNCIL OF MALAYSIA (OCM) secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi admits the prolonged internal squabble within the Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF) will be detrimental to the sport. Kok Chi said there is a better way to sort the mess out than lodging police reports or taking the matter to the courts. "The parties involved need to set aside their differences and work for a common goal. Some people still consider snooker a parlour sport and such internal dispute will not help the sport at all," said Kok Chi. Kok Chi stressed he is not aligned to any individual over this matter. "I know (Prof Datuk WY) Chin for a long time. I also know Melvin (Chia). I am not taking sides over this matter. This is an internal matter
which they should sort out nicely," he said. "Why so fixated over the national body? If you believe you can do something good for the sport, do it at the State level then and be the best in the world. If you're good, people will take notice of you." OCM received two lists from Chin and Melvin for the year-end Sea Games in Indonesia. "The meeting went well," was Kok Chi's brief reply. MSBF's dilemma started after the elections last December. Founding president Chin, who helmed the national body for more than two decades, stepped down and was made "advisor" instead. His long time secretary Melvin resumed the same post.
However, allegations of "money politics" surfaced causing friction among the members. Chin then declared himself as president while Melvin claimed the act was "unconstitutional". Even the MSBF constitution is apparently not in line with the standard constitution provided by the Sports Commissioner. Melvin's role in the council was questioned as he was said to be "State-less". Ironically, this was never an issue in the past. Melvin is currently the president of the Selangor Snooker and Billiards Association (SSBA). The Sports Commissioner's Office was alerted of the matter and Sports Commissioner Datuk Yasin Salleh declared the council elected last December stands as it is. Chin also alleged Melvin had obtained a letter from the SC's office to freeze the bank account of
the association recently. The tension heightened after Chin lodged a police report and threatened to take legal action against Melvin and Yasin, as reported in the From the Sidelines column 'Presidents' stand-off published yesterday. Yasin, who will clock in his first year in office as the Sports Commissioner next month, was not perturbed with the police report adding "he has all the documents" and "is willing to face any party". The national cue artists have not been training at the national training centre at Casa 1 for almost two years while Sam Chong was the last coach to guide the team for the 2005 Manila Sea Games. While the fiasco continues, SSBA have helped organise, co-organised and sanctioned 37 tournaments since January.

Samoa have ditched their trademark free-flowing style of rugby and adopted a more structured game plan for the tournament. Muir said they would be "foolish" to change that policy. "They've been together for a long time as a team and you've seen the progress. They're a side who are really playing good rugby and they've got a lot more structure to their game," he said. "We'd like to starve them of possession. They've got big, strong ball runners so we'll have to chop their legs and get them to ground as quickly as we can." The South Africans are viewing the match against Samoa, coming off a bruising 27-7 win over Fiji in Auckland last Sunday, as sudden death. Different menu for Murphy and Castrogiovanni
IRELAND'S Geordan Murphy (pic) revealed his rivalry with Leicester Tigers teammate and business partner, Italy's Martin Castrogiovanni, is heating up ahead of their pivotal Pool C clash in Dunedin on Sunday. The Irish go into the match knowing that just a draw is enough to guarantee them top spot and a likely quarterfinal clash with Wales. However, the Italians will definitely qualify if they win by more than seven points. There is so much at stake in this game and it is not surprising that Murphy and Castrogiovanni, who co-own a restaurant, are doing their utmost to get under one another's skin. "If you look at the shape of both of us, I tend to drink a lot of water and he tends to eat a lot of the food," said Murphy of their common business interest. "He's a good mate of mine, he's a fantastic prop and he's a different character off the field to what he is on it. He's certainly one of Italy's key players. "He's been texting me. The closer the game gets, I'm receiving more and more text messages from him. He swears a lot at me in Italian and he's trying to teach me all the bad words. I'm not going to repeat them." Castrogiovanni is renowned for his scrummaging and the Italians are expected to severely test the solidity of the Irish setpiece. However, Murphy has a novel plan to counter the threat poised by his club teammate. "I'm big into my
scrummaging, so I'll definitely be telling my forwards about how to scrummage him," he said. "I'm thinking of leaving some baskets of chips in the corners of the changing room for him. That should do it. The amount he eats, it should distract him quite nicely." Ireland have a fine record against Italy, having never lost to the Azzurri in Six Nations competition. However, the Irish needed a late drop goal from Ronan O'Gara to sneak past Italy earlier this year and Murphy is expecting another tight contest. "It's the biggest game of the pool," he said. "After they lost to Australia, Italy said they're targeting this game. They've openly said they want to reach the quarterfinals, which basically means they're saying they want to beat Ireland. "Some of the tries they're scoring at the World Cup have been good tries. Our backs will be against the wall as much as theirs will. They'll raise their intensity from the Six Nations. It's the World Cup, it's a level up from the Six Nations and I'm sure the game will reflect that."

Defender aims for contract at the end of his 'biggest season' TOTTENHAM centreback Ledley King is determined to play enough games to earn a new contract at the club, in what he admits is the biggest season of his career. King is Spurs' longest-serving player, having come through the youth ranks at White Hart Lane, but his contract is up at the end of the season. And after managing just six games last season, he has been warned by manager Harry Redknapp that he must play three times that many this term if he is to stay with the club. King, 30, admits he needs to play more, but is confident he can achieve that and cannot see himself playing for any other club. "This is my biggest season
at Spurs yet. It is the first time I have been in a situation like this — when my contract is up. So it is a big season," he said. "I have to prove I am still worth it. I can't see myself pulling on a shirt for anybody else at this stage of my career — although a player can never say never. "At the end of the day, I just want to stay fit and if I can play, let's see what position that puts me in at the end of the season. It is down to me to play the games. If I don't play enough games, it is a difficult position. "We will see what the situation is when all is said and done. If I get to 20 games, I am not going to stop. I will keep playing as many as I can. At the moment, I am just trying
to bed in, get a bit of fitness and not get any niggles. If I can do that, I can get stronger and keep playing." King admits it can be frustrating for him to spend most of his time in the gym and pool preparing for a game. "I have to work in the gym to keep everything strong and spend time in the swimming pool. It is only that I don't get on the field. Harry sees me on the field just the day before the game, which is why he says I do nothing," he said. "But the manager gives me a lot of confidence. He believes in me and it is nice that, if I can get myself right and keep myself fit, he still gives me the opportunity to go out and play. Some managers wouldn't, so I
am grateful he stuck by me. "It is only three games at the moment, so I have got to keep working hard and stay fit for the rest of the season. Last season, I had a groin problem and have worked hard over the summer to get that right. "Then I came back feeling good about the groin and the knee needed a bit of a clean-up again. That messed up my preseason and obviously knocked me back. I was hoping to get a proper pre-season this year, but that didn't happen, so I have had to build back up again. Hopefully, it is behind me now." King is poised to lead Spurs in the big north London clash against Arsenal at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Tevez suspended over Bayern fiasco MANCHESTER CITY suspended Argentinian star Carlos Tevez this morning as they began an investigation into whether he refused to come on as a substitute in the Champions League tie with Bayern Munich. He denied that he had refused to come on when told to do so by manager Roberto Mancini, who had said after the match — which they lost 2-0 — he was "finished" at the club. However, the club have decided that it is best he stays away completely while they carry out their investigation. "Manchester City can confirm that striker Carlos Tevez has been suspended until further notice for a maximum period of two weeks," read the statement. "The player’s suspension is pending a full review into his alleged conduct during Tuesday evening’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

"The player will not be considered for selection or take part in training whilst the review is under way." Tevez had denied Mancini's claims in a statement earlier. "In Munich, I had warmed up and was ready to play. This

LIONEL MESSI scored twice to move up the record books as Barcelona crushed BATE Borisov 5-0 away for their first Champions League win in Group H this morning. The Argentine World Player-ofthe-Year headed the third just before the break and smashed the fourth high into the net to go on to 194 club goals, equalling Ladislau Kubala as Barca’s second highest scorer of all time. An own goal from BATE’s Aleksandr Volodko in the 19th minute and a header from Pedro three minutes later had set Barca on course for a victory in which they barely broke a sweat. David Villa wrapped up the scoring at the end. Barca had started their title defence with a 2-2 draw at home to AC Milan two weeks ago and went level on four points with the Italians at the top of the group after Milan won 2-0 at home to Viktoria Plzen.
