Police to probe electrocution as criminal matter

THE case of 11-year-old Muhammad Naquiddin Mohd Marzuki (pic) who died after being electrocuted by a faulty lamp-post in Taman Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, on March 19, will be reopened to be investigated as a criminal case. Previously classified as sudden death, the case will be investigated under Section 304A of the Penal Code and Section 37 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990. Head of the prosecution division at the Attorney-General’s Chambers Datuk Tun Majid Tun Hamzah said the A-G’s Chambers had instructed the police to investigate the case for “causing the death of any person by doing a negligent act” and for “tampering or adjusting any installation on equipment that could cause danger to human life”. “Following the findings of the inquiry by the Energy Commission and after going through them thoroughly, we have instructed the police to carry out the probe under Section 304A of the Penal Code and Section 37 of the

By ANDREW SAGAYAM andrew@mmail.com.my Electricity Supply Act 1990,” he told The Malay Mail. This was confirmed by Subang Jaya acting police chief Supt Tan Ah Chua. “Initially, we had classified the case as sudden death but now we will reclassify it according to the A-G’s Chambers’ instructions,” said Tan. He said the police would obtain the documents this week. Conviction under Section 304A of the Penal Code carries a jail term which may extend to two years or a fine, or both, while those convicted under Section 37 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 face a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment of no more than five years, or both. sion finally wrapped up its investigations on the death of Muhammad Naquiddin. The Malay Mail had highlighted the issue extensively since the incident but there had been no firm stand by the authorities until our reporter visited commission officials, including its chief executive officer Ahmad Fauzi Hasan, at his office in August together with Muhammad Naquiddin father, Mohd Marzuki Muda. Ahmad Fauzi had said the contractor responsible for the shoddy maintenance work at the playground had been suspended. He declined to give details of the contractor or the type of suspension, except to say a copy of the findings would be sent to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council. “The details of the report are not for public consumption,” Ahmad Fauzi had said. Told of the latest development yesterday, Mohd Marzuki, 47, said he was relieved “things are finally moving”. “I’m glad something positive is happening. With the police taking up the case, I hope they nab the culprit responsible for my son’s death,” he said. He thanked The Malay Mail for pursuing the case. “If not for The Paper That Cares, my son’s death would not have been taken up to this level,” he said. • More on pg2

FLASHBACK: Our front page report on the release of the 2010 Auditor-General's Report on Monday

Let people know outcome of investigation into 2009 AG's report, says TI-Malaysia THE Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) must let the public know the outcome of the 13 investigation papers opened on the 2009 Auditor-General's (AG) Report. Transparency International Malaysia (TIM) president Datuk Paul Low (pic) said it was only “responsible” for MACC to inform the public on the result of their investigation as a “reasonable time” had passed since the investigation papers were opened. "It has been a year and in the case of the AG's Report, not everything is the result of mismanagement or mistakes as there are definitely some elements of corruption involved," he said. “It’s good they are taking the initiative to investigate.

However, it is also good that after an investigation, if they made a conclusion, they should make it known what case can be prosecuted and what cannot." Low said the 2009 report clearly showed “abuses” in some of the decisions made by those in positions of authority. He said the decision-makers involved in such abuses should be made accountable and, if necessary, prosecuted. In several online news portals, the public had questioned the efficiency of the MACC in their investigation of the AG's Report. They also asked the point of having an AG's Report as nothing was being done

to act against those deemed responsible for mismanagement or abuse of government funding. They said that since the 2009 report was made public last year, the MACC had yet to publicly announce any cases to be prosecuted or any con-

How electrocution case developed ON March 19, Muhammad Naquiddin Mohd Marzuki, 11, was playing football with his friends at a playground near his home in Taman Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, when he accidentally fell against a lamp-post and was electrocuted. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The Energy Commission immediately began investigating the death. Electricity to the park was cut off as a precaution. It was clarified in April that the source of the power leakage was from a faulty underground cable joint. On May 5, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) said it had no record of the contractor hired to carry out maintenance there. The boy's father, Mohd Marzuki Muda (pic), lambasted the council for its carelessness. Council officials went back and forth trying to figure out the contractor's identity. Former MPSJ council-

lor Miswati Dimyati refuted claims she was responsible for the contractor's appointment during her tenure from 2004 to March 2008. At this point, Mohd Marzuki, 47, and his wife Rose Zakaria, 43, were uncertain if they should submit documents for insurance payout or sue the authorities for alleged negligence. In a twist on June 2, an assistant to Subang Jaya Zone 5 councillor Keshminder Singh claimed to have complained to MPSJ on the defective lamppost on May 25, 2010, when

the council had previously denied any had been made. MPSJ engineering department director Ismail Shafie then clarified receiving complaints on Feb 24, May 25 and May 26 last year on the vandalism of a ground-level switch box and short-circuit inside the switch box at a lamp-post at the playground. In July, Umno Youth pledged to advise the boy's family if they decide to take legal action. The family accepted the offer. On Aug 11, The Malay Mail together with Mohd Marzuki confronted the commission at its Putrajaya headquarters. Commission CEO Ahmad Fauzi Hasan said the probe report would be released in a month. It was on Sept 19 that the commission finally wrapped up its investigations. Ahmad Fauzi said the findings would be handed over to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action.

clusion on their investigation papers. The MACC could not be reached for comments yesterday. This year, MACC opened 36 investigation files on issues raised in the 2010 AG's Report released on Monday. Two of the investigation files were opened at MACC headquarters, two in Sarawak, three each in Penang and Johor, six each in Terengganu and Kedah, and seven each in Perak and Sabah. The 2010 report stated that the national debt had risen by 12.3 per cent to over RM407 billion last year and the government owed 53.1 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) at the end of 2010. Several ministries were also called into question, such as

the Tourism Ministry, which was reported to have failed to have open tenders for procurement of its advertising projects. The report said RM194 million or 72 per cent of procurement for advertising in 2009 and 2010 were acquired through direct bookings or direct negotiation. The government's Poverty Eradication Programme was also singled out for its 54.4 per cent failure rate under the Economic Enhancement Cluster, which also translated to 37 failed projects out of 68 projects implemented. In ter ms of cost, t he failed objectives amounted to RM28.37 million and the 31 successful projects only amounted to RM1.07 million.

MCA objects to proposed Income Tax Act changes MCA has objected against the proposal to amend the Income Tax Act which will give the Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) director-general sole discretion over late or incorrect submissions. Currently, taxpayers may submit their case and bring their appeals to the court or a special commissioner. MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said the objection was over the proposed inclusion of the new Section 107D and changes to Section 81. "If the amendments are passed, the new Section 107D will enable the director-general to direct taxpayers to make advance payments if he has reasons to believe that taxpayers have not submitted their returns correctly, even if no assessments were issued," he said when commenting on a newspaper report, quoting sources, that amendments

"Meanwhile, the proposed changes to Section 81 would eventually lead to the absolute power of the director-general to disregard any information, beyond the expiry of the specified time." Dr Chua said the party had discussed the matter during its presidential council meeting on Tuesday and MCA representatives in the Cabinet had been asked to raise the matter at the Cabinet meeting. Apart from that, he said, the party would raise the matter in the National Economic Council (NEC), where he is a member. "MCA feels the proposed changes will give too much power to one person and no room for appeal. Taxpayers should have the right to appeal," he said. — Bernama

As such, it should not be perceived as a racial organisation or an ultra Malay party," he told reporters after the second Perkasa general assembly in Setiawangsa yesterday. On the coming general election, he said Perkasa was ready with its machinery to ensure victory for the ruling party. Earlier, in his speech, Ibrahim urged the government, especially the Public Service Department, to review the subsidy given to students pursuing higher studies abroad. Let the music play

Elton John's sexual preference has nothing to do with concert, say fans MUSIC should be viewed as strictly entertainment and must be separated from religious and cultural beliefs. This was the sentiment of several people The Malay Mail spoke to in response to the upcoming concert by Elton John in Malaysia. For the first time in his fourdecade career, the 64-yearold will be here to perform at Genting Highlands on Nov 22.

By IKRAM ISMAIL ikram.ismail@mmail.com.my

It was reported earlier this week that Pahang Pas Youth protested against the concert because of the English singer-songwriter's homosexual status. Its chair man, Sha hr i l Azman Abdul Halim, said in a statement on Monday Elton John's performance here could negatively influ-

ence the young. Shahril said the image the singer portrayed was not suitable for Malaysian culture. Creative director Adric Chong, 38, said Elton John's music had nothing to do with his sexuality. "He's got some nice songs and Malaysians should respect his sexual preference. I don't

believe his songs would influence Malaysians badly," he said. Chong's sentiment was echoed by Charles Joong, 41, of Puchong, who also questioned why Pas Youth was making an issue of it. "Another openly gay singer, Adam Lambert, had performed in Malaysia before but there was no controversy or protest," he said. Executive, Aaron Leong

However, Puteri Nadia Megat Hamdan, 25, of Shah Alam, was against the concert. She felt it would attract more gays in Malaysia to declare their sexuality in public.

Residents fearful of faulty wiring SOME 20 families at the Seri Jati low-cost flats in Ara Damansara here are living in fear of faulty electrical wiring. Residents in Block A said they faced repeated shortcircuiting of electrical appliances and power blackouts over the past three months due to high voltage. Seri Jati Flats Residents Association chairman Ravi Ram said wiring at the buildings were covered with cement without protection. "Usually, contractors encase wires in plastic to protect it from heat and cold," he told

said Elton John's sexual preference had got nothing to do with his show. "Malaysians should not be too conservative. His music and sexual preference are two different things. Let's be supportive and just enjoy his performance here," said the 23-year-old who works with an oil and gas company. A father of one, who only wished to be identified as Dev, said there was nothing

The Malay Mail. "Due to rapid heating and cooling of cement, the live wires melt allowing the wires to dangerously mesh together." Ravi said checks by Tenaga Nasional B erhad (TNB) showed in-coming voltage from the sub-feeder pillar of the housing project was within the approved rate. He said following TNB's checks, the developer sent four officers to inspect the

situation. "But they said the problem was due to renovations at some units and lack of maintenance," he said. Ravi said with the help of an independent contractor, electricity was restored to the flats through "illegal connections" as a temporary measure. He said the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) promised to solve the problem. MBPJ councillor Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainudin said

an independent contractor would prepare a report on the wiring. One of the Seri Jati residents, housewife M. Jeyanthi, 42, said the wiring problem caused the short-circuiting of three fans, a washing machine and a television set. Another resident, housewife P. Shanti, 44, said her family could not afford to replace the short-circuited electrical appliances after her husband passed away recently.

Zaidah Mohd Zaki, 30, said she expected to deliver the day after Deepavali, but her high blood pressure caused by the pregnancy meant labour had to be induced on Tuesday night. She safely gave birth to a 2.47kg baby girl at 4.05am on the morning of the festival of lights. "Deepavali being a public holiday, it was also easier for friends to visit me at the hospital," said Zaidah, an IT executive who has two other children. In the case of Lee Lin Li, 33, she gave birth to all

her three children at Pantai Hospital. Her third child and her first daughter arrived at 6.18am yesterday and weighed in at 3.17kg. "I was expected to give birth on Nov 2 but my daughter came a week earlier and shares the Oct 26 birthdate of one of my brothers, her uncle," said Lee, a lawyer. She and her husband, Dennis Nga Diong Hin, plan to name the child Zoey. Pantai Medical Centre public relations executive Kiranjeet Kaur said every new mother received something from the hospital, but those who gave birth during major festivals always got a little more.

Don't be exploited by religious extremists, says cleric MUSLIMS in Malaysia must not be driven by religious extremists willing to exploit Islam for their own political agenda, said influential cleric Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin. The former Perlis mufti stressed the public must protect "non-extreme environments" or risk turning the country into a Taliban State. Taliban was an Islamist political group which governed Afghanistan before it was overthrown after the 2001 Sept 11 terrorist attacks in the US. The Taliban government had close links with terrorist group al-Qaeda and was harbouring the group's leaders, including Osama bin Laden. "We are not a Taliban State, although there are effort by some to apply Taliban-style policy in our country. But, until this moment, our modesty and simplicity still remain strong in our culture," Mohd Asri said in an email to The Malay Mail from the UK. "We must keep non-extreme environments dominant in our society, otherwise we will put ourselves in a troubling situation. "We must be careful because there are efforts to change us into an atmosphere of extremism using religion as a tool giving wrong interpretations of the Quran and Sunnah in order to support their extreme actions." Mohd Asri said the low turnout at the Himpunan

Sujuta Umat (Himpun) rally in Shah Alam last Saturday showed a majority of Muslims in the country rejected religious extremism. Fewer than 5,000 people turned up at Stadium Melawati for the rally, supported by 3,000 NGOs, aimed to gather a million Muslims against alleged Christian proselytising. "For me, this is a clear message from the majority of Muslims in Malaysia that religious extremism is not their choice," he said. "Murtad (apostasy) is happening because of weakness or loss of 'iman'. Iman is all about faith. We cannot strengthen or restore faith by blaming others. We should ask why they are weak, have they lost their iman? Where is our dakwah (preaching)? Where is zakat (tithe)? Don't accuse others to cover our weakness." Mohd Asri said Muslims must stop blaming others for their own shortcomings. "It's better for us to improve ourselves rather than point our fingers at others. We are in the era of globalisation. Today's way of thinking is different. Take into account the current state of ummah and do dakwah in the proper way, insya'Allah, people will love Islam," he said.

Chapter of hope for deprived students Exam failures and troubled youths benefit from Science of Life Studies

By Cecilia Victor cecilia@mmail.com.my

SINCE a Science of Life Studies (SOLS) 24/7 chapter was introduced in Malaysia in 2007, thousands of underprivileged students have benefitted from its motivational talks and free courses in English, maths, science of life, basic accountancy, and basic and advanced computer studies. This United Nations-linked non-governmental, non-religious educational organisation was founded in Cambodia in 2000 to provide new hope to less fortunate youths. Besides Malaysia, chapters have been set up in East Timor, Laos, Japan and Singapore, and over the past 11 years, have trained over 75,000 youths. "Most of our students are troubled youths and those who come from poor backgrounds, including those who failed in their studies," said SOLS 24/7 programme coordinator Danuthca Catriona Singh, 27, a former journalist who has been with this NGO since its inception in Malaysia. "Our centres cater to those aged 16 to their late 20s and we have seen many youths,

MORE than 10,000 people are expected to take part in the "Be The Movement" charity walk on Saturday at 1pm in Putrajaya, in support of the World Hunger Relief cause under the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The 5km walk, which begins and ends at the Palace of Justice in Precinct 3, is organised by Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Pizza Hut Malaysia, which are owned by QSR Brands Berhad. Nestle Malaysia and Fitness First are also taking part for the first time in this annual cause. Apart from the walk, there will be a mini-carnival with fun activities for the whole

including school dropouts, make a complete turnaround for the better and are now doing well for themselves. Some have become teachers or administrators at our centres." Danuthca said the courses run up to a maximum 18 months and upon completion, students get to take part in an exchange programme at SOLS 24/7 centres in the other participating countries. "In this programme, participants learn how to manage their own SOLS 24/7 centre from the office to the kitchen, and how to teach and look after new students," she said, when interviewed at the SOLS 24/7 Taman Sri Sinar centre in Segambut here. "Those who complete such

internship receive a certificate of completion and are welcomed in our SOLS 24/7 centres as teachers and administrators if so inclined. For those who prefer employment elsewhere, we help them achieve that too." Danuthca said the organisation believed that with proper training, all students can be well-prepared for the life challenges ahead. SOLS 24/7 works with other NGOs to recruit students and is part of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees programme. The Malaysian chapter receives funding mainly from Hong Leong Bank Berhad Foundation, Carrefour Sdn Bhd, and the Vijayaratnam Foundation.

Life-changing experiences at SOLS 24/7 WHEN M. Yohajothi failed her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam six years ago, her future seemed bleak. But her fortunes changed when she joined SOLS 24/7 in 2007, and she is now principal of SOLS 24/7 Taman Sri Sinar centre in Segambut, which currently has 80 students. "I thought my future was bleak after failing the Form Five exam. Fortunately a friend introduced me to SOLS 24/7 and after two years, I was able to communicate and write well in English," said Yohajothi, now 23. She said participating in a students exchange programme at a SOLS 24/7 centre in East Timor built up her confidence. "It was during the internship where I learned how to manage day-to-day operations, then decided to seek a teaching position at SOLS 24/7," said Yohajothi, who is

from Malacca. "Although I received other job offers, I declined as my passion is to help students the same way I was once helped." Another SOLS 24/7 student is Hamdan a/l Ah Kaw from Pahang, who also fared badly in the SPM exams. "I did odd-jobs but thanks to the encouragement of my father, I enrolled at SOLS 24/7 in 2009," said Hamdan, 26, who started a SOLS 24/7 chapter in his home State last year. "Like Yohajothi, my intern-

An enthusiastic newcomer to SOLS 24/7 Taman Sri Sinar is 18-year-old John Joseph Joel Frank from Sabah. "I am doing a six-months intensive course in English, computer studies and accountancy, and I hope to proceed to the next level," he said. "I also look forward to doing an internship programme and my ambition is to become a teacher at SOLS 24/7 someday."

Islamic swords on display Parties sign MoU to showcase how faith was defended in the past

IN conjunction with the upcoming Islamic Sword Exhibition and display of the Silat Pusaka Gayong Historical Collection, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Yayasan Restu and Silver Ridge Technologies Sdn Bhd on Tuesday. The exhibition, the first in Malaysia, will be held from Dec 5 to 19 at the Sri Zaleha Naza Hall in Naza Gurun, Kedah. Yayasan Restu chairman Datuk Abdul Latiff Mirasa and Silver Ridge Technologies chairman Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah signed the MoU at the Selangor Arts Garden Complex in Shah Alam. Present was Datuk Raja Abdul Majid Raja Mat Isa, founder of the Silat Pusaka Gayong Association (PSSPGM). "The exhibition's objective

is to foster greater appreciation for the teachings of the Al-Quran, the As-Sunnah as well as the sacrifices made by the Prophet Muhammad during his lifetime," Abdul Latiff said at the signing. He said it would also showcase how valiantly the Islamic faith was defended in the past, rather than glorify the concept of war. "We decided to use the Sri Zaleha Naza Hall in Kedah to generate more exposure for rural residents of Kedah, Perlis, northern Perak and Penang," he said. According to historical accounts, the Prophet had his own collection of weapons, including nine swords, which were replicated and imported for the exhibition

Mohd Suhaimi, whose company, Silver Ridge Technologies, is the main financier for the exhibition, said December was chosen for the exhibition as it would be during the year-end school holidays. "Together, we hope to make this a world-class exhibition to be enjoyed by all," he said. Yayasan Restu had previously organised the Replica of the Prophet's Home and the Prophet's Sword Exhibition from July 8 to Aug 8 during the annual Al-Quran and Arts Festival in Kuala Lumpur.

Commuters sweat it out in broken down train while driver kept 'mum' over situation STUCK in a stalled and stuffy train with children crying, UVANESHWARAN wondered why the KTM Komuter driver was keeping 'mum' over the unscheduled stop. Passengers had to call customer service themselves close to half-an-hour later to find out the service provider was aware of the technical glitch and dealing with it. UVANESHWARAN's ordeal began when he took a KTM Komuter service last Saturday from the city to return to his Klang home. He boarded the train at the Kuala Lumpur Station at 11.48am and it reached nearby Kuala Lumpur Sentral about

11.50am. "The train, however, broke down between KL Sentral and the Angkasapuri Station." UVANESHWARAN claims there were no announcement from the driver on the matter. "We then contacted the customer service after 20 minutes and was told help was on its way within 15 minutes. "Without ventilation, children began to cry. The driver only opened the windows and doors after passengers started complaining and that was 40 minutes later!" The driver then informed UVANESHWARAN and other passengers another train would be arriving from

KL Sentral to move the faulty coach in five minutes. "But our train was towed to the Angkasapuri Station more than an hour after it had

stalled. We wonder is this the level of service provided by KTMB? "Was the driver given adequate training?"

● A SPOKESPERSON for Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) says due to a technical problem, the train stopped at 12.24pm between KL Sentral and Angkasapuri Station on Oct 22. She says KTMB Komuter services were badly affected. "These incidents were unexpected and as a result it has created service interruptions." The spokesperson says KTMB's procedure involved making an announcement to passengers on board the affected train and at the stations. "During the incident, however, the announcement system was not function-

ing." She says necessary action will be taken to improve the situation from time to time. "In general, we recognise our various shortcomings and we are continuously striving to improve the KTM Komuter service. "We understand efficient service is essential in today’s fast-paced world, especially for our valued customers like you. Again, please accept our sincere apology for the discomfort experienced. " When contacted, UVANESHWARAN says he is unhappy with KTMB's response, claiming it is not the first such incident.

Pestered over payment TAMAYANTY FELLIDURAI is unhappy with the way a credit company is hounding her over a car loan repayment. The 29-year-old communications executive from Kuala Lumpur claims she has been harassed by AEON Credit Service (M) Bhd's agents through no fault of hers. TAMAYANTY says she earlier settled her re-finance issue in June after taking her almost three months to do so. "AEON then instructed me to subscribe for auto-payment at Jaya Jusco in Mid Valley Megamall to enable them to deduct my monthly payments from my Maybank account."

She says the company later called to request payment, claiming the auto-pay would only be activated once she received a confirmation letter. "Although I received the letter in July, they said a processing error had occurred and promised to fix it, but they continued chasing me for payment." TAMAYANTY says AEON asked her to reapply for the auto-payment and someone would deliver her the form on Sept 30, but she refused as she was unhappy with its conduct. "Even so, their agent failed to turn up. Later, I got a call from another agent demanding to know why I had not yet

paid. "I told him the entire story and asked him how he could be unaware of the situation," she says, claiming agent then raised his voice and hung up. TAMAYANTY later received a call from another agent, saying they would arrange for a second appointment. "She never even apologised for all the inconvenience but gave various excuses on why the other agent didn’t turn up. "I told them it was not my fault and they were making the situation even more difficult. I also refused to pay that month's fee." She says the agent became angry and threatened to re-

possess her vehicle soon and she could not do anything about it before hanging up. TAMAYANTY then got another shock. She says the company called her parents in Penang and pestered them for payment. "I had previously asked them not to do that, as they are over 80 years old and recently recovered from a heart surgery. "Why must I go through all this when I did my part and they were the ones who made a mistake?" She claims she has been constantly humiliated, harassed and verbally abused by the company. "For this, I am demanding RM400 in damages and an apology."

● AEON Credit Service (M) Berhad spokesman Faizul Hamzah says their enquiry did not reveal any evidence of harassment or rude behavior by the staff. "Further contact was made with the customer’s father, who was a referee for the credit application, due to repeated failure in contacting her. "Nevertheless, we regret any inconvenience caused from the non-acceptance of the Direct Debit service enrollment form." He says they also have alternative repayment channels available for customers. "We will correspond further with TAMAYANTY directly on this matter and also apolo-

gise for the inconvenience. "AEON Credit Management continuously emphasises quality customer service and communication at all times." When contacted, TAMAYANTY confirms AEON has agreed to send her a letter of apology, but she is not satisfied with its claim of not having any proof of unprofessional conduct and requests a second letter. "They also did not agree to provide the RM400 compensation I requested," she says, adding they only offered her a free gift. "I am unhappy with their response, and believe they should also strive to improve their customer service skills and training."

Online comments www.mmail.com.my Unused card blacklist bother (Oct 14) ● I HAVE worked abroad almost all my life and took home about RM60,000 a month. Three years ago, nearing retirement, I opened a current account and a savings account, and put in a modest amount. I was told I need to keep at least RM1,000 in the current account. So I put in RM1,020. The bank sent me a cheque book and charged me RM25 which automatically put my account

below RM1,000. They then started charging me RM25 every month for four months. When I returned, I noticed the deductions and queried about them. I was told the charges were for the cheque book, something I was not told about when opening the account! When I protested, the bank waived the charges and brought the account up to date, but the following month, the deduction started again. Fortunately, I was back in Malaysia and I

got this stopped. The bank apologised profusely. Then, I decided to buy a house for just over RM1 million and put a deposit of RM800,000, but wanted to borrow RM300,000, and spoke to the bank about a loan. The bank promised the world to me, but when the time came and I sent all the documents, it did not bothered to reply or acknowledge. Although I could not understand what the issue was about and despite my

having over RM600,000 in a Malaysian bank and earning a high income, I could not qualify for a mortgage. It did not bother me as I knew when I was ready, I could sell off one of my other houses and buy one in Malaysia outright. — EthnicMalaysian Danger crossing (Oct 20) ● GOOD job! Quake survivors 'forgotten'

RESIDENTS of remote villages flattened by Turkey's powerful earthquake say they are digging out bodies with their own shovels after being left to fend for themselves by the authorities. While rescue efforts have reached the town of Ercis, which bore the brunt of Sunday's quake, little help has trickled out to the villages of Van province. Some 30km away from Van city, the residents of Guvecli village are complaining of lack of help from the authorities and

French men receive penis reassurance ONE of France's oldest and most respected medical bodies went to great lengths to put the country's men at ease about the size of their penis. The National Academy of Surgery was so alarmed by the growing popularity of penisenlargement surgery it published the long and the short of penis size to reassure French men about their adequacy, reports the Daily Telegraph. It offers a comprehensive list of "normal" penis measurements in an effort to discourage them from undertaking the potentially-dangerous procedures, news website The Local reported. It found a "normal" French penis measures between 9cm and 9.5cm long when flaccid and is 12.8cm to 14.5cm from base to tip when erect. "The feeling of having an insufficiently-large penis can be a source of anxiety and psychological suffering for a man," the academy said in a statement. It added enlargement procedures can be risky and put the patient at "risk of certain complications, in particular regarding erections".

Federer gets votes in Swiss election Tennis fans around the world have cheered Roger Federer's talents, but he's most celebrated in his native Switzerland, where some backed him in Sunday's election, even though he wasn't on the ballot. In his home village Wollerau, the former world tennis number one got 132 votes to represent the canton of Schwytz in the Swiss senate. A Facebook appeal urged voters to scratch out listed candidates and write in Federer.

An election official based in Schwytz, near Zurich, said write-in votes are permitted under Swiss law and that had the appeal been more successful, Federer could have won a senate seat. "One could be elected here, even if one is not a candidate," he said. In Sunday's vote, only one senate candidate in Schwytz earned the absolute majority needed to secure a first round win. — AFP

Abu Bakar has sentence cut AN Indonesian court cut the jail term of radical Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, an advocate of violent jihad convicted of funding terrorism, from 15 years to nine, a spokesman said yesterday. Bashir is regarded as a spiritual leader of militant Islam in Indonesia and is an outspoken supporter of al-Qaeda-style jihad but the 73year-old has always denied being a terrorist. "The chief judge verbally confirmed that Bashir's sentence has been reduced to nine years," the Jakarta High Court spokesman Ahmad Sobari said, declining to give reasons for the decision. — AFP

It's a man's world Shortage of women will result in 'marriage squeeze'

AS the global population hits seven billion, experts are warning skewed gender ratios could fuel the emergence of volatile "bachelor nations" driven by an aggressive competition for brides. The precise consequences of what French population expert Christophe Guilmoto calls the "alarming demographic masculinisation" of countries such as India and China as the result of sex-selective abortion remain unclear. But many demographers believe the resulting shortage of adult women over the next 50 years will have as deep and pervasive an impact as climate change. Nature provides an unbending biological standard for the sex ratio at birth of 104-106 males to every 100 females. Any significant divergence from that narrow range can only be explained by abnormal factors. In India and Vietnam, the figure is around 112 boys for every

100 girls. In China it is almost 120 to 100 — and in some places higher than 130. And the trend is spreading to regions like the South Caucasus, where Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia all post birth ratios of more than 115 to 100, and further west to Serbia and Bosnia. Demographers say that figure is now more than 160 million -women selected out of existence by the convergence of traditional preferences for sons, declining fertility and, most crucially, the prevalence of cheap prenatal sex-determination technology. Even if the sex ratio at birth returned to normal in India and China within 10 years, Guilmoto says men in both countries would still face a "marriage squeeze" for decades to come. Some forecast an increase in polyandry and sex tourism, while others predict cataclysmic scenarios with the rise of malesurplus societies where sexual predation, violence and conflict are the norm. — AFP

Futuristic take on how clocks tick

Unique theme and judicious action keep perfectly 'In Time' to tell story By Loong Wai Ting waiting@mmail.com.my AS people always say, time is money. But what if each passing moment has all been calculated, and to survive another day, you have to buy yourself some time — no pun intended. Set in the near future, where time has overruled money, its general population has stopped ageing at the age of 25. And in order to stay alive, its citizens must work to purchase themselves time. But when a young man finds he has been given more than a century to live, instead of wasting his years away, he devices a way to fight injustice and restore order before the time keepers catch up with him. While the concept is quite insane by its standard, In Time works 90% of the time, not because of its glittering cast but the cool idea that goes

behind it. There aren't many stories that are developed from such ideas but director Andrew Niccol makes sure everyone has fun being a time keeper. In Time looks just as good inside as it does on the surface. There is an underlying message that "shouts out" the obvious — that "people shouldn't be afraid of the government", that kind of thing. Remember V for Vendetta? There is sufficient action to keep you at the edge of your seat, but the moment the action stops, so does the movie, or at least the audience’s anticipation for the climax. To keep the movie from "dying", Niccol is lucky to have his cast keeping the ball rolling. Action alone is never enough but good acting from a highly watchable cast gets your eyes glued to the screen. Justin Timberlake, who plays Will Salas, seems to be having a lot fun chasing the rich guys for his time lost. Amanda

Sudoku X is a simple variation of Sudoku with the only difference being the squares in white (which make up the numeral X) need to tally from 1 to 9 along with the remaining coloured squares.

Seyfried, who plays his love interest and partner-in-crime does not disappoint either. As if the concept alone isn't enough to capture your attention, this “futuristic” movie has been made in such a way that one can relate to it, even

from our own present time. A novel idea offering a fresh perspective on time, In Time shuffles in the beginning but gets pacey when it finds its footing. Driven by aboveaverage acting, this movie is highly recommended for a quick fix of adrenaline.

What a sensation in the XE! ONE look at the HTC Sensation XE’s slim and sleek, black with red accented body and a subtle Beats logo embellishment, and it’s hard not to be impressed with the phone that undoubtedly makes the list of one of the ruling elite of smartphones, outdoing even it’s predecessor in the original Sensation. The fact that it’s the first to incorporate Beats Audio technology, raises it up a notch, though being one from the masses torn between Blackberry and the iOS platform, the general feeing is skepticism at Android devices — but the Sensation XE’s edgier form was still not enough to impress. Yet. Despite it’s abundance in size, the phone doesn’t feel bulky, and in fact, feels thinner than it’s form but offers ample screen space that moves away from the 5:3 800 x 480 display to a whopping 16:9 960 x 540 with it’s 4.3-inch screen. Instead of having the screen set to a bezel, HTC has chosen to have the back cover wrap around the edges, so you still get that seamless look and feel. The whole build and makeup of the Sensation XE is elegance personified, and weighing in at merely 148g and measuring at 126.1 x 65.4 x 11.3mm, it's compact too. Controls remain the standard

home, menu, back and search while nestled in the sides are the volume buttons and MicroUSB port. At the top, we have the power/standby button and the 3.5mm headphone jack. Switching the phone on, the Sensation XE immediately offers a crisp display, with a slightly higher resolution than the average Android. Not generally a fan of Android smartphones, having tested more than a few, the Sensation XE can most definitely make a believer of a doubting Thomas. One could go on about the wonders of the Sensation XE, but essentially it’s still a HTC Sensation with the addition of Beats audio processing, and a few welcomed upgrades. The biggie is in the battery — now a 1730mAh power pack which should help offset the scandalous power consumption that plagued the original Sensation. Of course, this may be swallowed up by another upgrade in the improved processor, which now comes in as a gigantic 1.5GHz dual core. The main star of the phone, however, is the audio feature, offering a dedicated Beats Audio profile, complete with audio manipulation technology. And yes, the phone, priced at RM1,999, comes with a pair of Beats Audio earphones that

would be pricy on their own. The Sensation XE automatically launches the Beats dedicated audio profile upon earphone connection, with the iconic logo appearing on the notification bar that enables easy access for enabling or disabling. The sounds are crisper, and there’s a thumping bass for music lovers who want that kick in their musical fare. Gone are the tinny sounds especially when you’re catching up on a movie on your Sensation XE, as it does lend the experience and ambience of a cinematic experience — at least in the sound department. Having tested the phone for a few weeks now, it is obvious

that it tends to heat up when the processor is put under serious load as the two cores gulp up energy. Still, the Sensation XE is frugal with power while it's idle or not under heavy use. While the camera is identical to the original Sensation, the XE appears to offer a slightly faster loading for the camera applications. So is HTC Sensation XE worth a buy? To be honest, if this was a virgin Android experience for you as it was for this reviewer — it’s a resounding yes. If you’re already an Android owner, give it a go and you might be pleasantly surprised. — By JOE LEE

In terms of storyline, The Woman Knight of Mirror Lake, a film directed by Herman Yau and starring Huang Yi, Dennis To and Rose Chan, has the upperhand. Yau, being a great admirer of Qiu Jin, a female revolutionary heroine during the Qing dynasty who fought for gender equality and attempted to overthrow the corrupted Qing court, did a good job to showcase a different side of Qiu Jin. Played by Huang Yi through the various fight scenes, the actress showed how sharp the warrior could be whenever she was around men in higher positions. In this regard, Yau has done his job well but in other aspects such as development, flow and editing, the director

Femme Fatale saves the day By Loong Wai Ting waiting@mmail.com.my seemed to have lost it. Whenever the movie tried to be serious, there were intentional moments slotted in to divert the audiences' attention. And whenever there was an important point GIRL POWER: Huang as the revolutionary heroine, Qiu Jin to make, it would throw in yet another unnecessary kung fu fight scene. All these gratuitous intrusions put a stress on the movie. What could have been a straightforward story about a revolutionary heroine got disrupted because the movie irelied on flashbacks to drive

its point across. And whatever that Yau was trying to say through the plot, just didn't get said, but he made up for the shortfall by throwing in more kung fu scenes. But there were certain moments when the characters shone through. Huang's take on Qiu Jin's character was

most notable. Her composed and calm persona made the actress the right person for the job. She emoted convincingly while putting herself through a myriad of physical actions. If not because of the script which hindered character development, Huang could

have been the only convincing actor here. While The Woman Knight of Mirror Lake may sound just like another boring historical movie, it is not. It may not be one of Yau's better-made films, but it still packs a whole deal of entertainment and fun.

Drama and suspense Anticipation mounts as screen awards show approaches

BE it surprise, delight or even displeasure, if it was a reaction TV3 was hoping for when they announced actress Rozita Che Wan as their choice for host of their Anugerah Skrin 2011 — they certainly got it. To be partnered with seasoned TV personality Ally Iskandar, Rozita, who doesn’t have the experience, may seem to be an unlikely choice to helm a show with the theme “Golden Glamour” on Nov 4 at the Putra World Trade Centre. Media Prima Television Networks chief operating officer Ahmad Izham Omar said the choice was to offer the awards show a different and a fresher take. “The production conducted auditions and I viewed the results myself and we found it was a unique combination, something that will bring a breath of fresh air to the show. It will definitely be interesting to see how it works out.” TV3 and TV9 brand group general manager Nurul Aini also echoed Izham’s confidence in the selection and said this was to celebrate and to give back to the

Saying she took two weeks to take the plunge into hosting the live event, Rozita thanked the station for their confidence in her. “I realise this is not within the field of my expertise, but I wanted to challenge myself, and I’m trying to pick up as many pointers as possible from someone more experienced like Ally. “I’ve already gone through the draft of the script and Ally and I are trying to develop the necessary chemistry onstage for the big night.” Ally, meanwhile, agreed with the choice of sidekick in Rozita saying that TV and film were foreign territory to him too, after having hosted mainly music-related productions such as Anugerah Juara Lagu. “I definitely have much to learn from her too, and it’s

a good symbiotic relationship that we have. “I offer my experience in live hosting, while she in turn, can take her knowledge and experiences as an actress to help me out.” Whether the untested combination will be a hit, needs to be seen, although Ally said it was not too difficult a task for them to develop the necessary connection with each other seeing that they have been acquaintances for some time now. The Anugerah Skrin 2011, meanwhile, will have the red carpet event hosted by Adzriefaiz Adzlan and Nabila Huda together with the winner of the Pantene Star Host winner.

Among artistes lined up to perform include Black, Ferhad, Zizan, Zain Ruffedge, Altimet, Najwa Latif, Awi Rafael, Jaclyn Victor, Shila Amzah, Alyah, Aizat and Tomok. Anugerah Skrin 2011 will be offering 23 awards in total, cov-

ering dramas, films and internal productions, including two special jury awards in the Anugerah Yasmin Ahmad and Anugerah Artis Harapan Pantene. From the eligible works competing, there seems to be a tight race between drama favourites like Airmata Nur Salina and Sanggul Beracun appearing as likely winners. In the TV drama series, Juvana and Nora Elena lead the pack, while it’s also a tight race for Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah, Nur Kasih The Movie, KL Gangster and Khurafat in the films category. Given that there were clear frontrunners across the board, Ahmad Izham was asked if outstanding favourites would ruin

the suspense of the outcome. “As in any awards show, undoubtedly there would be popular picks. However, while the outcome may be predictable, it may also go the other way. It all depends on the judges, and the suspense is in seeing whether these predictions will come true.”

Sticky encounters When jellyfish flourish, they destroy everything in their wake

BIZARRE FOOD: Jellyfish are often harvested to fill cold platters in Chinese dinners THE ocean is a beautiful, yet terrifying place. If you’re out there, paddling in unknown depths because your boat has capsised, you never really know what’s lurking underneath the surface. Take jellyfish for example, the mysterious and rather odd creature is beautiful when swimming almost in synchrony with its own kind but come anywhere close to it, and you could be dead meat. At Chinese dinners, jellyfish are sometimes served as appetisers, but that’s probably the only top-of-the-food chain encounter you’ll have with this malicious creature. Don’t underestimate this animal as a nebulous and brainless blob because it could be the world’s worst nightmare. After 600 million years of evolution, jellyfish are the planet’s ultimate survivors and are resilient to even the

world’s most harsh and threatening effects of climate change and pollution. In Discovery Channel’s new documentary, Attack of the Giant Jellyfish, scientists reveal that these creatures are taking over our oceans, destroying food supply and turning beaches into dangerous territories. The documentary poses just one question: Are they really mindless, sightless and bloodless, or are they smarter than anyone will ever predict? This could be the real life “war of the worlds!” Scientists are studying the jellyfish’s venom, life cycle and reproduction to understand what is triggering their population boom. From the Florida coast to the Sea of Japan, huge flotillas of the deadly creatures are attacking coastlines around the world and it seems that no underwater landscape is impossible for them to invade and conquer. Consequently, no country is safe when

millions of poisonous tentacles reach out to the beaches all over the globe. Because of global climate change and their ability to survive and thrive in even the most hostile marine environments, jellyfish populations are exploding and growing larger every year. This is most apparent in the Far East where colossal Nomura Jellyfish regularly grow as large as washing machines, weighing up to 500 pounds (226.7kg). With tentacles up to 15ft long (4.5m), these Godzillas of the sea are capable of capsizing boats and destroying everything in their wake. For the past decade, they have been swarming Southeast Asia by the billions and putting the world’s fishing industry in peril. Unfortunately for us, the most lethal species of jellyfish, the Box Jellyfish, is growing almost uncontrollably and has been suspected to be responsible for countless drowning deaths around the globe. Scientists are furiously searching for a solution to this worldwide scourge but as they search for answers, they uncover disturbing information about these gelatinous attackers — they can regenerate body parts and are almost impossible to kill. They also live off our litter and pollution — by feeding on plastic and garbage. Catch ATTACK OF THE GIANT JELLYFISH this Saturday, Oct 29 at 11am on Discovery Channel (Astro channel 551). 10 THINGS ABOUT THESE AQUATIC CREATURES 1. Jellyfish digest their food very quickly. They wouldn't be able to float if they had to carry a large, undigested meal around for long periods. 2. Jellyfish stings can be painful to humans and are sometimes lethal. But jellyfish don't deliberately attack humans. Most stings occur when people accidentally touch a jellyfish, but if the sting is from a dangerous species, it can be deadly. The Australian box-like Sea Wasp is the most toxic to humans. Jellyfish has been around for more than 650 million years which means they outdate even dinosaurs and sharks. 3. The world’s largest known jellyfish can reach a diameter of 8ft (2.5m) and its tentacles can grow to half the length of a football field. 4. There are many types of jellyfish in the ocean. These almost transparent creatures pulse along on ocean currents. Inside their bell-shaped body is an opening that is its mouth. They eat and discard waste from this opening. As jellyfish squirt water from their mouths they are propelled forward. Tentacles hang down from the smooth bag-like body and sting their prey.

5.

The Lion's Mane Jellyfish found in the north Atlantic, has a bell which can reach 6ft (2m) in diameter with tentacles as long as 100ft (33m). The poisonous Portuguese man-of-war is found floating on the surface of tropical ocean water and its sting is said to be as toxic as a cobra's bite. 6. Sea turtles relish the taste of jellyfish. Some jellyfish are clear and can look like plastic bags in the water. Others are in vibrant colors such as pink, yellow, blue, and purple, and are often luminescent. 7. The Chinese have fished jellyfish for 1,700 years. They are considered a delicacy and are used in Chinese medicine. 8. Jellyfish are classified as Phylum Coelenterata, a classification that also includes hydras, polyps, sea anemones and so on. 9. Jellyfish are invertebrates and don't have a backbone. 10. Dead jellyfish are lethal because they can still sting. —By KARINA FOO

SERI KEMBANGAN: GOLF/ ASIA PACIFIC CLASSIC DISAPPOINTED: Danny says local golfers should be given the chance to play with the best

Two's not enough

Unhappy Danny wants more Malaysians to play in star-studded event NATIONAL No 1 Danny Chia laments the minimal Malaysian representation at the Asia Pacific Classic at the Mines Resort and Golf Club. The 39-year-old is disappointed that only two sponsor exemptions were given to Malaysians — one to the highest ranking national player and the other to the national qualifiers winner. Shaaban Hussin had won the national qualifiers last month while Danny had just moved up to first place in the national ranking. He was previously in second place behind Iain Steel. He comp eted in the qualifiers despite being top

ranked, Danny opted to give it a miss. "I didn't want to compete at first because only two places were reserved for us (Malaysians). This should not be the way," said Danny. "We should be given a chance to rub shoulders with some of the best. Although we do not possess the same talent as top players but the exposure will serve our golfers a great good." Danny had just returned from South Korea after competing in the CJ Invitational where he finished tied at 61. The golfer is reluctant to

speculate on his outing at the Asia Pacific Classic. "The greens look great and are fast too but I don't know how I'll fare in terms of position. I don't play against the PGA Tour field often to be able to gauge their play," he said. "I just want to play my best and stay fit. I have a hectic schedule until end of the year." Danny is eyeing a top 30 ranking in the Asian Tour by year end. The US$6.1 million (RM19m) tournament will see 48 golfers compete. For further information visit www.cimbasiapacificclassic.com.

JAKARTA: SEA GAMES

Envoy assures safety for Malaysians MALAYSIAN Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Syed Munshe Afdzaruddin has assured the safety of the Malaysian contingent to the 26th Sea Games in Indonesia next month. He said that in addition to the assurance given by Indonesian authorities on the safety of all contingents to the Games, the Malaysian embassy would also take steps to ensure members of the Malaysian contingent would feel safe and are able to concentrate on their events. "The same goes to the Malaysian supporters," he said. He was speaking to 25

members of the Sportswriters Association Malaysia (SAM) who are currently on a threeday pre-Sea Games tour of the Indonesian capital. The visit, led by SAM president Ahmad Khawari Isa, is to allow association members to get an overview of the host's preparation for the Games, from Nov 11-22, at two main venues — Jakarta and Palembang. Syed Munshe said that although there were demonstrations by Indonesians in front of the Malaysian embassy, they were isolated cases. He said the demonstrations took place only in front of the embassy and that the dem-

onstrators had not disturbed Malaysians in other places. The latest demonstration was on Oct 13 when a group of demonstrators, who called themselves "Laskar Merah Putih'', gathered in front of the embassy purportedly to protest land grabs by Malaysia in West Kalimantan. Both countries had denied the allegation. "In fact, during the meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Lombok on Oct 20, the Indonesian leader reminded Indonesians not to go overboard in their demonstrations," he said. — Bernama

Severe punishment should be handed out, say umpires MATCH officials are up in arms over players getting away with light sentences for what they regard as serious offences — some are afraid there may come a day there will not be any umpires to officiate. A letter from an anonymous umpire, copied to Mailsport, was sent to the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) Technical C o m m i t t e e a n d Um p i r i n g Committee stating the umpires' disappointment on the lack of urgency in deliberating disciplinary issues. The letter, signed off by the umpires, states they are disappointed with the constant criticism of the umpiring and that umpires are often the first to be blamed. "Umpires are always on the receiving end of all the faults that take place on the pitch. Never once have team officials and/or players been blamed just because they spend hundreds of thousands of

ringgit preparing for tournaments. When things are not favourable to them, we get the blame," stated the letter. The standard operating procedure when any offence is committed is that the matter will be deliberated by the technical committee. Should they find the offence serious, the matter will be sent to the Disciplinary Board (DB). A senior umpire, who did not want to be named, also questioned the whole process and hopes the umpiring committee will play an active role in their cause. "The whole procedure of disciplinary action is vague. There should be clear guidelines on how to deal with different circumstances," he said. The letter listed four cases in which players were either let off

lightly or disciplinary action was delayed. Umpires believe all this abuse towards them will only stop if the technical committee and the DB mete out immediate and appropriate punishment to players and officials. "Some of us have been umpiring for more than 15 years. We see the same players and officials year in and year out. We have been swallowing a lot of rubbish. We have new, younger umpires coming up the ranks and they too are facing the same problems. "How do you expect the country to produce more umpires when the rot is still there?" questioned the letter. Meanwhile, Umpiring Committee chairman Lt Kol B. Muthukumar acknowledged receiving the letter but refused to comment. "I can't say anything because the committee have not met to discuss the matter," he said.

The following are extracts from the letter 1. Razak Cup 2010 – Kuantan — National player Faisal Saari pulled umpire Ravinderpal Singh's T-shirt for awarding a penalty corner against his team. Faisal was shown a yellow card for the act and then a red for uttering foul words to the umpire. This player was referred to the DB, without the umpire concerned being called. He apparently apologised and got off without any punishment. Being the "blue-eyed-boy" of the hockey team, officials felt they needed his services more. He went on playing for the country and received the same treatment from international umpires for similar behaviour but our officials kept a blind eye. This matter was also brought up in the MHF council meeting and highlighted to the president. The DB head said since there was no physical abuse they could not take any action on the player. Do they expect the umpire to be hit and only then action will be taken? The president asked the umpiring committee to write to the DB to reopen the case but sadly this was never done. 2. MHL Premier League 2010 — Nur Insafi Penang's Keevan Raj approached and pushed umpire K. Lingam when the umpire awarded a penalty corner to Maybank. He said that the umpire had been bought over by Maybank. Lingam gave Keevan a green card, and the player repeatedly abused him with foul language and spat on him. The umpire immediately showed him the red card. He too followed proper procedures by making a report and waited for the outcome. Action was only taken after two to three weeks whereby Keevan was subsequently

banned for 21 months. 3. MHL Premier League 2011 — Armed Forces' Norfadzeli Nasir came up to umpire K. Illango after the match, threatened him and called him out of the stadium for a fight. Norfadzeli had to be calmed down by his fellow teammates. Once again, a report was made and submitted to MHF but action was not taken immediately. The player played two more matches and in one of those matches, he again approached umpire R. Anbanathan after the match and abused him. Another report was made against this player. This time he was suspended for two matches. 4. MHL Premier League 2011 — Sapura captain S. Kuhan was red carded by umpire Anbanathan for using foul language. After the match, said player approached the technical bench and continued to hurl more foul words on the umpire in the presence of MHF officials and the technical officer of the match. Having received a red card, the player was automatically suspended for one match pending the DB hearing. What baffles us is that, the technical committee did not meet to take further action and/or refer him to the DB. The technical committee, in a Press statement, said that the matter could not be deliberated because a certain person was not available and therefore it would be held on a later date. Kuhan was then given an additional one-match ban. For all the abuse and outburst, Kuhan received only a two-match ban. The Armed Forces player, who did not receive any card but abused the umpires after the match, was also suspended for two matches."

Gallery of stars vie for RM6m prize WORLD No 2 Lee Westwood (pic) and US Open champion Rory McIlroy are headlining a powerful field chasing the biggest winner's cheque in golf at the Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters starting tomorrow. The glitzy competition is the latest exhibition in China to attract some of the game's biggest names but as an unsanctioned event it carries no rankings points for the players, leading to criticism of "vanity" projects. Englishman Westwood and McIlroy, from Northern Ireland, will vie for the US$2 million (RM6.3m) winner's cheque at the inaugural tournament along with Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley. M A R IA SHA R A P OVA ' S hopes of winning back the WTA Championship title after a seven-year interval suffered a blow when she lost her opening match to US Open champion Samantha Stosur here yesterday. The Russian was playing her first match in nearly four weeks after injuring an ankle in Tokyo, and her uncertainty showed as she lost 6-1, 7-5 to the Australian whom she had beaten in previous nine encounters. Sharapova, who has qualified for the season-end tournament for the first time in four years, may now have to beat both Li Na and Victoria Azarenka if she is to reach the semifinals. Sharapova had points for a 4-0 lead in the second set but lacked the consistency to capitalise. She produced

a high ratio of unforced errors, and six double faults, including one at 5-5 which contributed to a vital service game loss. "It’s tough to come back after a month and compete at this level," she said. "But at least I have given myself a chance to be here, which was a question a couple of weeks ago. "And it’s good that I have a couple of matches to go. I think I have time to improve." Meanwhile, top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki went a set and a break of serve down before getting the better of Agnieszka Radwanska, the in-form Pole, by 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in a tortuous tussle of containment and counterattack. There were important moments when she called

upon her father-coach Piotr to help work out how to overcome the durable and thoughtful Radwanska, the winner of 11 successive matches and back-to-back titles at Tokyo and Beijing to become the tournament’s last qualifier. "He told me that I should be the one deciding where to play the ball," she said. The 17 year-old Universitario de Deportes striker has caught the eye of Premier League scouts but his agent has revealed that German sides Hamburg and Shalke are the favourites to sign him. "There are two clubs in Germany who are very interested in Andy and there is a very close agreement," said Borja Gonzalez. "In the next 48 hours they have to call me and tell me they want to do the deal. If all goes well on Thursday or Friday we should be close. Andy Polo will play in Europe next year."

Noel Gallagher revels in Devils' pain MANCHESTER CITY fan Noel Gallagher took time out at the Q Awards to mock Manchester United following the Red Devils' 6-1 drubbing at the hands of their neighbours. The former Oasis guitarist was honoured with the Q Icon Award and used the proud occasion to stick it to United by smiling gleefully as he poked six digits into the air and posed for pictures. The Citizens have always been in the shadow of their Manchester rivals but it now seems they have the upper hand after knocking the reds for six. Mad Mario backs firework safety drive YOU would have thought Mario Balotelli (pic) would be the last person to front a firework safety campaign but that is exactly what has happened. Balotelli was forced to escape a blaze at his rented house after a blaze started when fireworks were let off in the bathroom at 1am on Saturday morning. Bathroom towels were set on fire and the blaze spread but Balotelli has insisted that he did not cause the fire and that the offending firework was let off by his friends. Yet, despite being at the centre of the latest off-field misdemeanour, he is the new face to promote safety ahead of next month's Bonfire Night.

Spurs midfielder believes they can take any team now TOTTENHAM midfielder Rafael van der Vaart (pic) hails their current form and says they feel like they can win every game. Spurs twice conceded a lead at Newcastle on Oct 16 and ended up drawing 2-2, but bounced back to win at Blackburn last weekend to continue their fine run of form which has seen them win five out of their last six matches. Van der Vaart has been a pivotal figure during that run — scoring five times in his last four games, and he believes the confidence his side has means Spurs feel they are a match for any team in the league. "Last week we drew at Newcastle, everyone was disappointed and that means everything, it says a lot about the team," he told Spurs' website. "We're confident at the moment, we know we can win every game, especially when we play our game and play good football. "It was important to win at Blackburn. I don't think we played our best game but we won and that's what matters. We have five wins and a draw (in the last six matches) and as I said, we have a lot of confidence. " It ' s a lw ay s tou g h at Blackburn but we managed to win and we're up to fifth, so that's great." Van der Vaart, meanwhile,

JUVENTUS striker Alessandro Matri (pic) is fast becoming an idol with La Vecchia Signora or "The Old Lady" fans. The 27-year-old Italy international is poised to be an influential figure for Juventus in their challenge for honours this season. He proved this yet again by striking the winner in the 65th minute in the 2-1 win over Fiorentina at Juventus Stadium on Tuesday. "We needed the win and we were able to get it tonight (Tuesday)," he told Sky Sport Italia. Leonardo Bonucci opened the scoring for the hosts in the 13th minute but Stevan Jovetic levelled the scores in the 57th minute. Matri, who has already scored four goals in the league, was naturally happy to have played his part for the team. Juventus manager Antonio Conte admits his thoughts were already on Saturday's big clash against Inter Milan at San Siro as soon as the referee blew his whistle. "Inter are a great team and they have a strong squad, and so it is inevitable that my thoughts were on them," he said.

— Rafael van der Vaart also feels for striker Jermain Defoe as manager Harry Redknapp picks between the duo for a starting spot. With Emmanuel Adebayor leading Spurs' line in league action, his supporting role has come down to a choice between van der Vaart and Defoe. Van der Vaart enjoys an attacking role through the middle and proved his quality last Sunday with a well taken brace in Spurs' 2-1 win over Blackburn. Van der Vaart was troubled by hamstring worries last season, problems the 28-year-old insist are now firmly behind him.

Barca could have done better, says saviour and record breaker Xavi BARCELONA midfield maestro Xavi believes they could have done more to show their strength against Granada following a narrow 1-0 away win on Tuesday. Xavi, who made his 392nd Liga appearance to break a club record, was the Catalans' saviour against the nine-man hosts as his superb free-kick from 30 metres in the 33rd minute proved to be the difference.

After the match, Barca manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola said his men were lucky to have won maximum points, and Xavi echoed that view. "It was a complicated game and we could not finish it off in the second-half," Xavi told AS. "Granada never had a shot on goal, but then we never scored a second goal. It was a good game, but we missed getting the goal which would have

offered us more tranquility on the pitch. Barca, with the win, are back on top of the table for at least 24 hours as Real Madrid and Levante only played their matches this morning. In another development, Guardiola insisted he had nothing to do with midfielder Yaya Toure's departure to Manchester City — and added he even tried to convince the Ivory Coast international to

stay at Nou Camp. However, Toure revealed on Tuesday that he left Barca for City in the summer of 2010 because of his poor relationship with Guardiola, saying the manager hardly ever spoke to him. Guardiola yesterday denied

the accusation and made it clear he attempts to forge strong relationships with the players in his squad. "There's not much to say about this matter. I talk to anyone and the doors to my office and house are always open for the players," said Guardiola. The 28-year-old Toure won the FA Cup in his first season with City and also qualified for the Champions League with the Premier League side.

MANCHESTER CITY striker Carlos Tevez is "hurt" by the allegation he refused to play. Manager Roberto Mancini said after City's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich that the Argentine refused to come off the bench. City suspended Tevez as they investigated the issue. On Tuesday, they fined him four weeks' wages after a disciplinary hearing upheld a charge of improper conduct against him. But City did not charge Te ve z w it h re f us i ng to play, and the striker is now

reported to be considering legal action against Mancini over his comments. "Carlos has been hurt by the insinuation that he refused to play when City's charges are refusal to resume to warming up," the Argentine's PR advisor Paul McCarthy told Sky Sports. "So that is where there is conflict, if there is any conflict at the moment... he feels his reputation has been damaged by that." McCarthy also refuted some Press reports that Tevez's conflict with City stemmed from the fact that they have refused to pay him

Vermaelen to miss Arsenal's big clash against Chelsea ARSENAL manager Arsene We nge r hop e s T hom a s Vermaelen's latest injury is not a serious problem, but the centreback will not be involved in Saturday's derby at Chelsea. The Belgium international returned from a two-month lay-off to captain Arsenal in Tuesday's 2-1 League Cup fourth round win over Bolton at Emirates Stadium. But Vermaelen, who has

been plagued by Achilles and ankle problems, was forced off in the 84th minute of the match amid concerns he had suffered some form of setback on his return. However, Wenger is optimistic a tight calf will not cause his star defender too many problems, although the meeting with Chelsea will come too soon for a return in the Premier League.

Sensibly rich Malaga want to be liked NEWLY-RICH Malaga will not try to buy their way to success but rather place a heavy emphasis on developing their own talent, general manager Fernando Hierro (pic) said. Hierro said he wanted Malaga to be regarded as a simpatico (nice/likeable) club, not a word that was always associated with the former defender during his Real Madrid and Spain days, at least by the forwards who faced him. "If I had to put a slogan on our project, it would be 'sensible'," he said in an interview at Fifa headquarters after a meeting of the 2014 World Cup taskforce, of which he is a member. "We are not going to go crazy and create a lot of big expectations." The Costa del Sol club have

spent most of their existence moving between the first and second divisions and have never won a major trophy. But they have been transformed since Qatari Sheikh Abdullah al Thani bought the club last year.

After a shaky first season, in which they flirted with relegation before finishing 11th, Malaga raised eyebrows with a flurry of activity in the summer transfer window. They landed Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, French midfielder Jeremy Toulalan, Brazilian Julio Baptista and Spaniard Santi Cazorla. Under former Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini they hope to challenge for a place in European competition next season. The club have been praised for spending wisely and are a creditable sixth in La Liga. "We have new financial circumstances and we have new targets but we understand things need their own time to happen. We don't want a radical change." — Reuters

"Vermaelen did very well. He had to come off for a calf problem, but I hope it's not too bad," Wenger told Arsenal's website. "He will be a bit short for Saturday, I don't know yet what I will do. We have to test him tomorrow, but it doesn't look too bad. "He has been out for a long time, he had only one training session on Monday with the team. I didn't really expect a

game of that intensity, it was a tough one for a centreback. "Blackburn put us under pressure in the second-half and the intensity of the game was very high. "We don't think it is a calf strain, it is just tight calves. He has not played a proper game for two months. He wanted to come off. "In fairness, I did not want to take him off because I thought

it was too stupid now with four minutes to go to concede a goal. He was adamant he couldn't go on so I hope it's not too bad." Vermaelen moved to calm fears that he suffered an injury setback after limping off on Tuesday. "I had a small cramp at the end," he said. "Nothing serious. Just went out as a precaution."

Fifa open cases against 10 more Caribbean officials WORLD football's govering body Fifa opened cases against another 10 officials from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) yesterday related to the now infamous meeting held in Port of Spain, Trinidad in May. In a statement, Fifa said they were investigating the 10 regarding possible violations of the Fifa Code of Ethics following the meeting which led to the downfall of former Concacaf chief Jack Warner and his Asian Football Confederation counterpart Mohamed Bin Hammam.

They both left their positions and Fifa's executive committee following bribery allegations stemming from the May meeting. They were accused of attempt ing to br ib e CFU officials to vote for Hammam in June's presidential election against Sepp Blatter. Trinidadian Warner subsequently resigned from Fifa and Qatari Hammam was found guilty and banned from football for life. Umpires strike back PETALING JAYA: HOCKEY

LOCAL

Officials get together to stand up against abuse UMPIRES for the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) are tired of being pushed around. In a letter to the MHF, disappointment was conveyed at the delayed disciplinary action taken on players found to have abused them. They also believe that some of these players have been getting away with murder as the punishment handed out did not conform to the severity of the offences.

The letter also questions the standard operating procedure involved when meting out punishment. Many umpires believe the abuse will only stop when immediate disciplinary action is taken and called for a more transparent guideline when dealing with different circumstances — before somebody gets hurt. 

The three-time Serie A winner also spoke of what player he looked up to with his idol being a certain Brazilian striker, but he was quick to emphasise he was from Brazil rather than Portugal. “Ronaldo, the Brazilian one,” he said. Meanwhile, England coach Fabio Capello maintains Balotelli has matured as a player during his time at City. Capello credits Mancini for his role in Balotelli’s development. The Italian insisted Mancini has done his utmost to support Balotelli despite a string of negative reports in the British media, who he suggested treat foreigners differently. “Balotelli is no longer as he was some time ago,” Capello told Calciomercato. “Now Mario accepts referees’ decisions, he is of real service to the team, and credit goes to Mancini, who wanted to keep playing him even after reading the terrible things in the news about him, because the British tabloids don’t joke around when targeting someone from another country.”

Mancini is like a dad to me. The 21-year-old, also known as Super Mario, was answering questions on the website that had been asked via Twitter fans. Balotelli, very much an enigma in most cases, shed more light on his thoughts and told of his favourite moment in a City shirt. “Winning the FA Cup, for sure,” said the former
