School prefects step down KLANG

THE Klang High School is in crisis mode as 16 prefects resigned en masse following what they claim is a breach of protocol and bias in the appointment of new prefects. It is believed what sparked the move by the multi-racial group were newbies being appointed deputy head prefect and assistant secretary with immediate effect. The straw that broke the camel’s back was a newly-appointed Form Four student being made head prefect. According to parents of some of the prefects who quit — eight Form Four boys, five Lower Six girls and three Lower Six boys — they had resigned following the school’s Sept 15 decision to appoint seven new prefects who did not undergo the standard probationary period. probation, the new prefects, which included two Lower Six students, also took their posts as deputy head prefect and assistant secretary with immediate effect. The 16-year-old head boy, however, underwent probation. Five other new prefects comprise three Form Four students and two Lower Six students. On the Sept 19 installation day at the morning assembly, the 16 students told a teacher, who was to announce the names of the new appointees, they were stepping down. According to some of their parents, who preferred anonymity, they were concerned with the message being sent to these impressionable young minds. “My child said a teacher told a Lower Six class the
present batch of senior prefects were good for nothing,” the parent claimed, adding other parents were afraid to come forward, fearing their children would be “marked”. Another parent said he was in disbelief this was taking place at an established school. “I cannot believe this is happening in a school that has been around for more than 80 years. Such a thing should not happen in an established school like Klang High. “The school administration must rectify this situation. I brought this matter up with several teachers and they said it is almost impossible to get the headmistress to discuss this as she is adamant about her decision.” • More reports on pg2

Prefects resign en masse 16 students step down in protest over new appointees

The teacher said while the headmistress inevitably made the final decision, the selection committee did not include the Prefectorial Board advisor and assistant advisor — the two teachers who are always present in the selection process. "This has forced the parents to question the criteria used for the selection of prefects. If the selection has always been done with the original committee members and the headmistress, why was it done differently this time?" the teacher asked. The school's Parent Teacher
Association chairman, Dr Desmond Lee, said he would meet with the school administration today. Good garland sales expected for Deepavali

WITH Deepavali falling on Oct 26, traditional flower sellers in Brickfields are anticipating increased sales. One seller, who prefers to be known as Senthielkumar, said he had been in this trade the past 18 years. "The best sales are around Deepavali, and I also supply to weddings, birthdays and other religious festivals," said the 38-year-old. "Each garland takes from 15 to 25 minutes to create by tying the various flowers with strings." Senthielkumar said his younger brother had another stall nearby and both operated from 8.30am to 11.30pm daily. "We are both self-taught and our supply of jasmines comes from Rawang, while roses and lotus flowers are delivered from Cameron Highlands," he said, adding the flowers would lose their bloom after four days. "My garlands are priced from RM10 to RM15 each and there are usually more customers from Thursdays to Mondays."

On July 12 last year, the school came under the spotlight when it dissolved three non-Islamic societies set up in 1969. "But if there are doubts over the fairness of the new appointments, then someone must set the record straight.”

'Cat hotel' fiasco: Both owners still 'missing'
POLICE are baffled over the "disappearance" of the two owners of a 'cat hotel' in Damansara Damai, where almost 300 pets were found starving and unattended to on Sept 4. Identif ied as Shar ul Azuan Adawan and Yushairi Khairuddin, both, aged 29, have been missing since they gave their statements to the police on Sept 4. Petaling Jaya deputy police chief, Supt Meor Hamdan Meor Mohammad said police had since been unable to contact them. “We need them to assist in our investigations," he said, adding the place of their lastknown address was found empty and several people close to them claimed they did not know their whereabouts. "We urge those with information on the two to contact the nearest police station." With the approval of police and the area’s security guards, the pet owners as well as concerned animal lovers and volunteers, broke into the premises and rescued about 100 pets there. Nine felines were found dead that night. After lodging police reports, the ‘rescue team’ of owners and volunteers went to a house at Desa Moccis in Sungai Buloh where 200 more cats were rescued. At both premises, the cats were found kept in inhumane and unsanitary conditions, and left starving. Since then, five more cats have died.

Vandals, trespassers desecrating cemetery A NUMBER of locals who have family and friends buried in a Muslim cemetery along Jalan Kuala Garing, between a secondary school and a mosque, have pleaded with vandals and trespassers to "leave our dead to rest in peace". They said ever since the cemetery's rear gate was removed by residents, trespassers had been desecrating the graves with rubbish and immoral activities. "They smashed the rear gate so the graveyard could be used as a shortcut for school children and others to access the main road," said a frequent visitor who declined to be named. Vans are parked in the graveyard, and piles of rubbish, including broken classroom furniture, cover the graves and its surroundings as school children sit and climb on the damaged gravestones as they wait to be fetched after school. According to the visitors, teachers at the school have been seen encouraging students to trespass into the graveyard to retrieve way-

ward balls. Even a crosscountry marathon has run right through it. Vandals have burned a large patch of the graveyard. Thieves who stole telephone wires nearby have used the cemetery as a place to strip the wires for its copper as can be seen from the plastic insulation lying around. Worse, couples have been seen fornicating on graves and drinking alcohol within the graveyard, leaving behind their empty bottles. "They have no respect for our dearly departed," says Mohd Zin who regularly visits his late wife's grave. Other visitors, however, do not blame the children for the situation. "They don't know any better," one visitor said. "The ones who should be blamed are the teachers, parents and the locals who show disrespect for the sanctity of this place. "We need a 'No Trespassing' sign and the gate to be replaced." The gate was installed by
the mosque committee under the direction of the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) last December. A representative from the mosque, Ilham Akhbar Harun, said they had done all they could after the mosque initially installed the gate to stop trespassers. Following requests from nearby residents, an agreement was reached to open it from 7am to 7pm so school children could pass through prov i d e d t h e re s i d e nt s enforced the rule. Ilham said the residents did not uphold their end of the bargain. A month after installation, the gate was smashed and dragged away. Nothing was done to replace it, said caretaker Ibrahim Taib. S elayang Municip a l Council enforcement head Azmi Ismail said while he was aware of the seriousness of the situation, it was difficult to combat these activities as the nearby school is known to have disciplinary problems. He said he would revisit the cemetery today to reassess the situation.

Increased police patrols at Taman Connaught
POLICE have pledged to increase their presence in Taman Connaught, Phase 2, Cheras, due to the spate of snatch thefts, car and house break-ins during the early morning hours. In a dialogue session with police yesterday morning, Taman Connaught Residents Association (RA) acting chairman Simon Jue and about 100 residents expressed their concerns while informing Cheras police chief ACP Mohan Singh Tara Singh of their plans to set up a gated and guarded community. Simon, a resident of 30 years said: "During the past eight years, there has been a monthly average of four house break-ins and most of these occur around 4am. Snatch thefts happen almost every other day." In response, Mohan said he supports the RA's move for a gated community and pledged to step up police presence in the area.

Cheras police chief ACP Mohan Singh Tara Singh said the 26-year-old man was helping to unload a 40-foot container during the incident. "The container tilted back-

India tests nuclear missile INDIA tested a medium-range nuclear-capable missile along its eastern coast yesterday, an official said, as part of the nation's efforts to build up its atomic deterrent. The indigenous surface-to-surface Shourya missile was fired from a range in the eastern State of Orissa as a trial for the Indian army, said SP Dash, director of the Integrated Test Range. "The launch of the missile was perfect. It followed the path exactly to the predefined target in the Bay of Bengal," Dash said. India's Defence Research Development Organisation is developing a series of missiles as part of the country's deterrent strategy against neighbouring Pakistan and China, which also have nuclear weapons. — AFP
No threat likely from storm Philippe THE Atlantic's latest tropical storm is likely to strengthen soon into a short-lived hurricane while staying far from land, US hurricane forecasters said yesterday. Tropical Storm Philippe, the 16th named storm of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, came to life on Saturday and strengthened yesterday but was unlikely to constitute a threat to the densely-populated U.S. coast or energy interests in the Gulf of Mexico. Philippe was about 800km west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands yesterday, moving west-northwest at 19km per hour while producing top sustained winds of 95 km, up a third from earlier readings, according to the Miami-based hurricane centre. — AFP

This encouraging number is almost equal to the number of inmates in 27 Puspen (Narcotic Addiction Rehabilitation) centres nationwide. "Our studies show volunteering for treatment is an important factor in a client's recovery," AADK public relations officer Mohd Amir Khusairi Harun told The Malay Mail. "Rehabilitation services such as Puspen were not as effective as they were legally-bound and coercive in nature. But this is also because their clients are

medication accordingly. "Counseling sessions are also conducted to understand what internal and external triggers cause changes in their behaviour. This way clients will be able to relapse in their own time." About 85 per cent of those admitted to their Methadone Replacement Therapy Treatment Programme have found employment. Implemented in 2005, methadone replacement is a treatment for former heroin users to combat withdrawal symptoms. WHILE monetary help goes a long way for an orphanage, one cannot dispute the fact that faceto-face interaction helps boost those in need as well. Instead of handing out donations alone, an orphanage in the city requests the public to visit it and see its environment. The Kompleks Anak Yatim Darul Kifayah, located near Taman Koperasi Polis, received more than 30 invitations from various parties to be part of their Hari Raya celebrations. But apart from the festive frenzy, the orphanage relied largely on individual contributions to get by for the rest of the year. "It would be good if people visited the orphanage to raise awareness of the children in it," said its caretaker, Zulkifli Md Nor.

"That way, people can see for themselves the condition the orphanage is in and what we need. They can get a feel of the environment and also maybe have functions over there as well," he suggested. Zulkifli spoke to The Malay Mail after guiding 80 children and youths from the orphanage to a Raya feast and celebration organised by the Ex-Policemen Association of Malaysia yesterday. He admitted losing count on invitations the orphanage received over the course of Raya and Ramadan. "There were at least 30 functions we participated in the past month. Almost everyday we had
functions. The kids were excited. Even during Ramadan, we were invited quite frequently." But he worried for the children's emotional upkeep during the other months of the year. The orphanage, according to Zulkifli, houses 355 orphans and children from poverty-stricken homes. He labeled Malaysians as "generous" in reaching out to the needy. "Because of our generous society, we get to get by". Zulkifli hoped with more awareness, the orphanage received more from organisations and also the public as compared to select individuals. "We also use scientificallyproven models and theoretical components for treatment and rehabilitation such as Pharmachotherapy, Cognitive B e h a v i o r T h e r a p y, t h e Motivational Approach and the Intensive Outpatient Treatment Model," said Mohd Amir. "Detoxification services include counseling, religion and spirituality, relapse prevention education, life skills, help support groups, as well as referrals and advocacy."
Ex-policemen seek more aid
DURING their prime, they represented the country's front-line of defense and crime prevention. But now devoid of their responsibilities, some of them are struggling to get by in life. For a considerable number of some 140,000 ex-cops who are members of the Ex-Policemen Association of Malaysia, they live either on or below the poverty line. The association's president, Datuk Yusuf Hamdain Diego, highlighted condition of these former servicemen during a Hari Raya celebration at a hotel in the city yesterday. He said they could use some help. He put forward several requests to Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Datuk Raja Zainal Abidin who was also at the event. Among them to provide exservicemen with opportunities for business kiosks during Ramadan bazaar events and the like. "There are ex-servicemen who need business assistance to enable them make ends meet. Kiosks could be awarded to them during Ramadan and Hari Raya events to boost their income. Similarly, other business assistance could be given as well," said Yusuf. He said many ex-servicemen lived on or below the poverty line, with some earning as low as RM200 per month.
Many of them, in their twilight years, attended the event. Organised by the association, the Hari Raya do yesterday was also to fete inmates of the Kompleks Anak Yatim Darul Kifayah. Yusuf revealed there would be a larger-scale programme which the association was expecting to organise in the near future. "There will be a bigger function at the end of next month, which is expected to be attended by the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) himself." T h at f u n c t i o n , c a l l e d Merhargai Jas a Pes ara ( Ap p r e c i a t i n g R e t i r e e s ' Contribution), is expected to celebrate the service of about 25,000 ex-policemen. The function is tentatively fixed for Oct 23. Out of the 140,000 members, there are 3,000 ex-policemen who are members of the association's Kuala Lumpur chapter. According to Yusuf, there are even more ex-servicemen in East Malaysian states, such as Sabah, which has some 5,000 members. The association was formed primarily to look after the welfare of ex-police officers, either via retirement or due to illness. Meanwhile, Raja Nong Chik said he would consider requests of the ex-servicemen to have more business opportunities.

WHEN Phang Ying Choy fell off his bed at his family’s Bandar Utama home in the wee hours of Sept 1 and died, his family and friends lost more than a loved one — they lost a symbol of inspiration and hope. At 22, he was pursuing a Masters degree in engineering at the University of Cambridge, one of the world's top varsities in England. Due to his family's financial constraints, his father, a building contractor, only had a seasonal income and his mother a housewife. Besides Ying Choy, the couple have two younger sons to support.

"Ying Choy did sales for a while and also gave tuition classes for primary and secondary students," said his younger brother, Ying Soon, 21. "He resumed studies a couple of times in 2006, first by enrolling in a foundation programme at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and then in Form 6 for three months." The situation changed in 2008 when Ying Choy saw photos of his friends studying overseas and holidaying in the Swiss Alps.
"Ying Choy felt if others could do it, so could he, and using his savings from 18 months of working, he paid for his A-levels course at Sunway University," said Ying Soon, adding his elder brother scored 4 As, obtained a Sime Darby scholarship and achieved his dream of studying at Cambridge, from Sept 2009. "He told me he would sponsor my ACCA accountancy course at a college in Damansara Utama." However, Ying Choy nearly failed his trial exams the first year. "But he persevered and
scored first-class honours, and was ranked 37th out of 160 engineering students in his batch," said Ying Soon. Ying Choy was in the second of his four-year course when he returned to Malaysia in the middle of this year during a semester break and even took up a short internship with a local company. On the night of Aug 31, after playing basketball with friends, he experienced breathing difficulties while sleeping. On Sept 1, he was found to have fallen out of his bed and was taken to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre where he was pro-
nounced dead at 6am. Ying Choy had no prior medical problems, and the autopsy proved inconclusive. The family is now coming to terms with their loss, and Ying Choy's dream of academic excellence lives on in his two younger brothers (see accompanying report). "Ying Choy told us he wanted our mother to be present at his convocation and also that he would take her on a trip around the world," said Ying Soon.

IT has been 13 years since Junk Book Store at No. 78, Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, was certified in 1998 as the country's largest secondhand book store by the Malaysian Book of Records. That record still holds. Occupying a modest-looking three-storey colonial-era shoplot, the shop has 200,000 used and bargain books, mainly in English, catering to every age group and encompassing every genre conceivable, fiction and non-fiction, with most titles published over the past 110 years. "My husband and I started this business on May 2, 1990, in a small room at Wisma Ann Koai in Jalan Ampang and six years later, on Jan 28, 1996, we moved to our present location simply because there was no space to house our books and other merchandise," said proprietor Adelyn Koh. "Over the past two decades, we built a wide customer base. Our

Foreign Ministry: Defer travel to Yemen MALAYSIANS are advised to defer their travel plans to Yemen until the security situation there has improved. The Foreign Ministry, in a statement yesterday, also advised Malaysians, who had yet to register with the Malaysian Embassy in Sana'a, the capital city, to do so immediately. It said the ministry contacted Malaysian citizens and advised them to take necessary precautions and keep abreast with developments in Yemen. The ministry, it said, was monitoring the situation there and advised Malaysians studying or working in the country to return home voluntarily. This is necessary due to the situation in Yemen, especially in Sana'a and Aden, which is said to be critical, following clash between the pro-democracy protestors and government security forces.

THE government should set up a special body to curb the flood of foreigners controlling business premises in Kuala Lumpur. Organisation of Small and Medium Entrepreneurs of Malaysia president Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah said the move was vital to ensure local entrepreneurs would not be sidelined on their own turf. He said with the special body in place, all complaints and reports could be addressed and proper solutions to the problem formulated. "We are seeing a flood of foreigners, particularly those from Indonesia and Bangladesh, in most business premises, especially in Kuala Lumpur." He said local authorities should take action to overcome the problem as it had not only affected medium-scale local entrepreneurs but also small-scale hawkers.
Attempts to sell porcupines as exotic food fails SEVEN Malayan porcupines, commonly known as landak raya, almost ended up in the pot if not for quick action by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) on Saturday. The joint Kuala Lumpur and Kedah Perhilitan nabbed two Malaysians at a village in Padang Terap, near Alor Setar, Kedah, at 9.15am following a tip-off. Kuala Lumpur Perhilitan enforcement officer Celescoriano Razond said the animals were meant to be sold to a restaurant serving exotic cuisine as there was a high demand for such dishes. No cycling culture Poor response to bicycle parking bays at LRT stations PUBLIC reception to bicycleparking bays set up at most light-rail transit (LRT) stations by Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) has been poor in the first weekend after World CarFree Day on Sept 22 despite free one-way LRT tickets being distributed. Prasarana, in a bid to encourage motorists not to use cars and resort to bicycling instead, is giving free LRT tickets on weekends and public holidays for a year, until Sept 22, next year. Over the past weekend, The Malay Mail checked various LRT stations in the Klang Valley and found bicycle-parking bays were under-utilised.

"Bicycle-riding to various places is not really our culture," said 19-year-old student Ong Wan Beng, who lives in Subang Jaya. "The weather is not suitable for people to be cycling in, even if it's only for 15 minutes. It is also tiring and time-consuming." "Security issues are a worry when leaving your bicycle at parking lots as there's nobody specially assigned to

Walkway planned for disabled to access park
Bright yellow hydrants for Subang Jaya FORTY-FIVE hydrants in the USJ13 neighbourhood were checked and given a new coat of paint, through the joint efforts of the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Department and the USJ13 Rukun Tetangga. Armed with hoes, paint brushes and tins of bright yellow paint, about 30 residents from the neighbourhood and Bomba cadets from SMK USJ13 spent three hours last Saturday cleaning up the areas and repainting hydrants. Personnel from the SS17 Fire and Rescue Department headed by their station chief Deputy Supt Khairi Daud joined residents in the initiative while checking all hydrants were working. "We have 5,000 hydrants under our jurisdiction in Subang Jaya, USJ and Putra Heights. Through such community-based initiatives, we can check hydrants in the different neighbourhoods faster and this ensures we have functioning hydrants during an emergency. "We are continuing our joint programme with the community and welcome any collaboration with residents," he said, adding the department had done similar work in USJ2 several months ago. No-show by firemen My house could have burnt down, says woman who placed '999' call
NORAZURA WAN ABDUL AZID is livid. She says her kitchen could have been "saved" if firemen had arrived on time. She says she called the Shah Alam Section 15 Fire and Rescue Department but the firemen did not show up. NORAZURA, 29, says she and her mother were preparing breakfast at 7.30am on Thursday when the kitchen caught fire after oil spilled from the pan to the floor. "I panicked but managed throw a towel on to the floor. I then grabbed my mother's phone and dialled 999." The operator transferred her call to the Section 15 fire station. NORAZURA says the officer who took down her details and home address assured her the firemen will be on their way but they did not show up. "There was still no sign of the firemen after halfan-hour. The flames were getting bigger. Luckily for us, neighbours who heard our shouts came to help and put out the fire with an extinguisher. "If it had not been for my neighbours, the house could have been burnt.'' NORAZURA claims the department only called to

the other end." At the customer service desk, AHMAD FAIZUL was asked to bank in the RM61 into his saving account. “I told them I had two saving accounts which were inactive but the officer said he could help me reactivate the account.”
Later, when AHMAD FIAZUL called the bank to check if payment had been received, he was told by an officer the account was not active. “The officer asked me to bring my bank book to the branch where I opened the account to withdraw some money to activate my ac-
count," he says. However, he does not have the bank book and cannot even remember where he opened the account in the first place. AHMAD FAIZUL wonders why CIMB is making things difficult for him instead of helping him to settle his loan.

He says that when he bought the car from Wang Selamat Sdn Bhd in Jalan Ampang for RM145,000, the salesman told him the car had been fully serviced. However, he has had to send his car back to Wang Selamat for repairs, including engine reprogramming, wiring, tyre chambering and car filter replacement, totalling about RM2,000. "Furthermore, they told me the air-con compressor needs to be replaced at an additional cost of between RM2,000 and RM6,000." He was then informed by an independent service centre for Volkswagen that additional servicing and labour costs as well as the price of parts needed to replace both sides of the drive shaft, the coupling rod and cover plate discs will amount to RM8,100. "I called Wang Selamat on Sept 20 to ask for reimbursement but the service manager said to me that what is done, is done," he says. ing it any more than usual. "When I went to a Maxis centre to find out the reason for the increase, I was told it was due to external content services. “I have never accepted or downloaded anything from them but they are charging me as much as RM4 per SMS." PETRINA says she received 22 messages and as of Aug 13, her bill is RM142.27. According to her, Maxis said the content was provided by Everest Mobile.

Unhealthy to have two sets of criminal laws
THOSE who are used to Kelantan Menteri Besar Tok Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat understand him as a person who sounds tough but can be quite humane when pressured for a fair deal. I remember when leading a Malaysian Consultative C ouncil of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism (MCCBCHS) delegation to Kota Baru, Kelantan, in the early 1990s, Nik Aziz was insistent for the most part of the meeting on the implementation of the hudud laws in the State. However, he was quite cordial and respectful of our views. He kept on assuring us that the new laws would not infringe on our own respective religion and customs. We parted most amicably with him agreeing to consider our views while, at the same time, he requested us to study his proposal. Within a few weeks he had sent us the decision of his government not to impose the hudud laws and other syariah laws on nonMuslims. We were also aware of the fact that the Parliament must amend the Federal Constitution before the Kelantan government can implement the law. Our council then went on a nationwide campaign meeting all political
party leaders not to support any amendment to the Constitution. The problem we have in this country is that our nonMuslim MPs from the ruling party from Peninsular and East Malaysia voted in 1988 in favour of amendment of the Federal Constitution's Article 121(1) and (1A) severely diminishing the power of the Civil Courts. The irony was that Nik Aziz restored the freedom of non-Muslims to build temples and churches, and the demolition of places of worship was prevented and settled by discussion. Even the Lion dances banned before was brought back again in the 1990s in Kelantan. As religious organisation leaders, we found it embarrassing to criticise the Kelantan government's restrictions on alcohol, gambling and vice. However, it is my personal opinion that hudud laws and all other Islamic laws should not be implemented in Malaysia, given our multi-racial and multireligious population. It is not healthy to have two sets of criminal laws, and for Muslims and nonMuslims to face different punishments for the same offences. Datuk A. Vaithilingam Former President MCCBCHST
Suicidal move THIS is not the way to get cheap publicity and pursue political mileage. Practically the entire Malaysian public is against the introduction of hudud laws in this secular country. The Prime Minister has said it, as well as the component parties of Pakatan Rakyat that such laws are unacceptable. Ev e n t h e Ma l ay s i a n Constitution, written more than 50 years ago, disallows such laws. Despite all these, those who are bent on introducing these unpopular laws can only be labelled as arrogant and backward.
Going against the peoples' wishes will lead the party concerned, PAS, to commit political suicide. We already have sufficient laws for all purposes to punish the guilty ones, and this country does not need any more laws. It is now the wish of the people that the Barisan Nat i o n a l w i l l h a v e a resounding victory in the coming general election and completely silence the Opposition. Telling a fake cop
POLICEMEN are supposed to be people we can trust and, for the most part, they are. The criminals know this. That is why they play with our trust and goodwill. Most of us, the normal people, only want to live our lives in peace. You know ... do our job, go home, raise our family and live happily ever after. We don't want to get into trouble with the law. The criminals know this, too (probably because they were once normal people before joining the dark side) and decide to take advantage of it. Most of the time, when we encounter or are stopped by policemen, we panic despite
not doing anything wrong or have gone against the law. Realising this, it is important that we should be able to identify a fake cop from a genuine one to prevent us from becoming victims. The police should meet up with the Brickfields folk and teach them, the general public, local or foreigners, how to identify them. Currently, there are 26 cases of police impersonation recorded by the Brickfields police. Now, that is a lot for just one police district. There are many more, I suppose, that went unreported. This should be enough reason for the police to go ahead with the programme to prevent further rise of such cases.
Tackle menace swiftly
Besides the police, the media can play a role by publishing public service announcementtype of stories to educate the people on ways to identify bogus cops. I believe the menace is not exclusive to Brickfields, other areas have the same problem, at one time or another. With such news being published, the reach will be wider. There are a lot of desperate people out there who would jump at any chance to take advantage of the unwary public. With such knowledge, at least we, the normal people, can be ready for it.
I FEAR if the police do not take this menace seriously and tackle it wisely and swiftly, eventually, even the bona fide police personnel will be taken as bogus. This is not good for the force as there are many instances elsewhere where bogus officers robbed and hurt people. Although the image of the police has never been good, there is no need to make it worse.

He went along with the deal only to find himself out of business by the very people who supported him. All Muslim nations and Muslims must return to the moderate, practical path of Islam. They need to quit all this hype about jihad and terrorism. They need to take a good look at themselves; their character and behaviour; honesty and credibility — before they can embark on reforms to achieve success. These nations should quit from being used. Two US hikers accused Iran yesterday of using them as "hostages" in its power struggle with the West and described hearing the anguished cries of fellow inmates being beaten in Teheran's Evin prison. Speaking at a Press conference in New York hours after landing back safely on American soil following their release to Oman last Wednesday, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal laid bare the extent of their harrowing two-year ordeal in Iran. "We had to go on hunger strike repeatedly just to receive letters from our loved ones," said Fattal. "Many times, too many times, we heard the screams of other prisoners being beaten and there was nothing we could do to help them. "It was clear to us from the very beginning that we were hostages. This is the most accurate term because, despite certain knowledge of our innocence, Iran has always tied our case to its political disputes with the US." The pair, both 29, were arrested with Sarah Shourd near the mountainous border with Iraq on July 31, 2009. All three have always maintained they are innocent of spying and simply strayed across the border into Iran.
"Sarah, Josh and I have experienced a taste of the Iranian regime's brutality," said Bauer. "We have been held in almost total isolation from the world and everything we love, stripped of our rights and freedom. "The only explanation for our prolonged detention is the 32 years of mutual hostility between America and Iran. We were convicted of espionage because we are American. It's that simple," he continued. "The two court sessions we attended were a total sham. They were made up of ridiculous lies that depicted us as being involved in an elaborate American-Israeli conspiracy to undermine Iran." Shourd, a teacher, writer and women's rights activist, met Bauer, a fluent Arabic-speaking freelance journalist, while helping to organise demonstrations in the US against the war in Iraq. The two moved to Damascus together in 2008. Fattal is an environmentalist and teacher. He traveled in 2009 to Damascus. Bauer proposed to Shourd during a rare moment shared in captivity, presenting her with an engagement ring painstakingly weaved from the threads of his shirt. Thrust into the media spot-
light after three days with their families in Oman, Bauer made more political points than Fattal, who applauded the Iranian authorities for finally making the right decision about the case. "The irony is that Sarah, Josh and I oppose US policies towards Iran which perpetuate this hostility," said Bauer. After using the platform to urge Iran to free all "prisoners of conscience," he also criticised the US government, saying the pair's Iranian guards often defended their conditions by referencing Guantanamo Bay and CIA prisons. "We do not believe that such human rights violations on the part of our government justify what has been done to us. Not for a moment," he said. "However, we do believe that these actions on the part of the US provide an excuse for other governments, including the government of Iran, to act in kind." China, already the world's second largest bullion consumer, has installed the country's first gold vending machine in a busy shopping district in Beijing, State media said yesterday. Shoppers in the popular Wangfujing Street can insert cash or use a bank card to withdraw gold bars or coins of various weights based on market prices, the People's Daily said on its website. Each withdrawal is capped at 2.5 kilograms or one million yuan (RM495,540) worth of gold, the report said. Gold vending machines already exist in Britain, the United States, the Middle East and Europe. The machine was launched Saturday by the Beijing Agricultural Commercial Bank and a gold trading company, the report said. A spokesman for the Tripoli Military Council said investigators had found the first physical evidence of the Abu Salim prison massacre, an event covered up for years but which ultimately helped bring about Gaddafi's downfall. "We are dealing with more than 1,270 martyrs and must distinguish each one from the other for identification by comparing their DNA with

MORE than 80 per cent of Australia's dog and cat owners believe they can understand what their pet's woof or miaow means, a survey has found. The survey of 800 Australian pet owners found more than 95 per cent of dog owners talked to their pets, while just over 89 per cent spoke to their cats, reports the Herald Sun. And 87 per cent said they understood what their pets were trying to say, according to the survey commissioned by an animal healthcare company. Veterinarian Dr Alister Webster said the results raised concerns that we might think we know more then we actually do. "Pets are important parts of our lives and most of us believe they know their pet well — and can even communicate with them," Dr Webster, from Pure Animal Wellbeing, said in a statement. "Particularly in winter periods, I
see pets that have been generally unwell or struggling with continued pain for extensive periods of time and their owners are not realising this. "Their owners may not have picked up on the signs or have read them wrong. It's not as easy to understand what pets are feeling as people think." Of greatest concern, Dr Webster said, are owners' perceptions of what happens to their pets as they age. The survey found 57 per cent of dog owners and just under half of cat owners thought their pets became grumpier as they aged. "They rest this belief of seeing their pet being less inclined to go for a walk or play; they are maybe slowing down and experiencing more stiffness, becoming intolerant of people or no longer jumping up on the furniture. "But these can be common signs of arthritis and joint pain, rather than grumpiness." Battle of the bottles COCA-COLA'S fierce-running feud with Pepsi has spilled into Australia's Federal Court, with Coke claiming its rival has ripped off its curvy bottle. A statement of claim lodged by Coca-Cola with the Federal Court alleges Pepsi's glass bottle is "substantially identical with or deceptively similar to" Coke's famous contour bottle, a registered trademark, the Sunday Telegraph reports. To win the case, Coca-Cola must prove Pepsi has been using the disputed bottle shape to identify the product as Pepsi and that the shape is similar enough to Coke's contour bottle to confuse consumers. Coca-Cola has about 70 per cent of cola sales.

Police help 1,400 kids return home Chinese police have helped more than 1,400 homeless or abducted children return to their homes through DNA matching as part of efforts to fight human trafficking since 2009, the Beijing News reported yesterday. National DNA database has reduced child trafficking in China, Chen Shiqu, director of the anti-human trafficking office of the Public Security Ministry, was quoted as saying. The ministry started to build up a nationwide DNA database since April 2009 in which parents who lost their children and children found homeless are collected their blood samples to conduct DNA matching. Potential new 'Scarface' film in the pipeline Universal Pictures are reportedly considering a new version of the Scarface story. The studio, who made the 1983 version starring Al Pacino and also own the rights to the 1932 original, are planning to update the story for the modern age. As reported by Deadline, the new film will be neither a remake or a sequel but rather an amalgamation of the story and themes of the two previous films. Questions have been raised, particularly on the eligibility of nominees which reflect rather negatively on the top guns of the Recording Industry of Malaysia (RIM), the organisation that "owns" AIM. "DON'T look at me as the bad guy because I did not change anything in the eligibility criteria for AIM18," said RIM president Norman Abdul Halim (pic). Norman has been seen as the main "antagonist" of this ignominy with music practitioners being none too pleased about the nominees.

To begin with, the number of categories has also been reduced from 29 to only 18 — perhaps a reflection of the declining state of Malaysian music industry today. "We did not change any criteria or rules but we had to let go of a few categories because they are no longer relevant to our music scene. We do not see the reduction as a way to shut out artistes who want to submit entries. We are actually opening more doors. In fact, more artistes without full albums can now be part of AIM," Norman said. He said AIM has plans to organise separate award events for the local Chinese market as well as the Indian segment. "As for the last minute cancellation of the Hip Hop Song category, the decision was not made by us but by the jury. If it had been up to RIM, we definitely would have wanted that category in. However, the jury panel thought otherwise as they said most of the entries were not up to par, not ‘hip hop’ enough." Norman reiterated he was no way responsible for changing
anything. Everything was decided based on the template of AIM's rules and regulations from the start. "I am surprised that certain artistes are accusing RIM of changing the criteria each time a selection was made. I'd like to explain that AIM does not belong to any organisation other than RIM. He also explained that in line with AIM's main objective, the event only prioritises local artistes, composers and local record companies. Each participation must come from a registered local record label while independent submissions will not be allowed. "I don't understand why these people are still talking about it as if they didn’t know the rules and criteria. Every rule and criterion are clearly written and submitted with the application forms and they should know what the content holds — even if they don’t bother to read." Norman also explained why Zee Avi and Hujan were not nominated in any AIM category. "Zee Avi is a Malaysian artiste. However, she is not signed to any
local recording label in Malaysia, which means she is not qualified. It is that simple. As for Hujan, I can't say much as I am not so sure about the real situation. However, I think they are still qualified to be nominated in some categories but definitely not overall. "We have gone through this carefully and that is why we do not want to be a part of the evaluation process. And that's the reason why we are also leaving the responsibility of judging wholly to the panel of jury." Norman, however, did concede there might be flaws in the criteria and rules and gave the assurance he would personally scrutinise the problems and make an announcement after AIM18. "We understand the fuss that has been going on especially with the nationality issues and all. Therefore, I promise to look at the whole situation seriously so that no further problem will occur in the future. Indeed, and if you're into the unknown, be prepared to be spellbound by the world of magic and illusion that sometimes offers an escape route from the hectic reality. Resorts World Genting is bringing in Superstars of Magic, a show that will feature seven worldclass magicians with their award-winning acts. The show is expected to be held at the Genting International Showroom daily from Oct 1 to Oct 16 (all shows are at 9pm). The seven magicians set to mesmerise audiences include Danny Cole, Michael Finney and Kevin James from the United States; Victor Voitko (Ukraine), Adrian Soler (Spain), Timo Marc from Germany and Juliana Chen, the only female magician with the troupe from the US as well. Coca-Cola saw the influence and collaborated with TV3 and Media Prima for the use of Tomok as the face of their new campaign, Buka Semangat. The campaign is a project that is expected to galvanise the youth of Malaysia and fuel their enthusiasm to greater heights. The Buka Semangat campaign is based on an idea that positive messages can be spread through music. "His journey is one that many youths can relate to and CocaCola is thrilled to have this opportunity to energise him to overcome the barriers, and realise his dream. He will inspire all his fans to take that same step to recognise their potential and uplift themselves towards success," Coca-Cola Far East Limited (Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei) head of integrated marketing communications and activations Rommel Fuentebella said. Tomok, who has been looking to expand his presence beyond the local market, will now have the opportunity to collaborate with a British indie rock band named One Night Only. The band, comprising George Craig, Mark Hayton, Daniel Parkin, Jack Sails and James Craig, has been making waves in Europe and is now expanding their music in Asia, with Malaysia as their next stop. "Coca-Cola is extremely excited about the collaboration between Tomok and One Night Only. As for Tomok, who just got married three months ago, the project is something he never expected. Kabaddi thriller Grouses rise over KAM election as drama heightens
IN 2009, there was a Kollywood movie called Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu about six village lads who were passionate about kabaddi. It was a touching story which ended with them fulfilling their dream and winning a local tournament. But unlike the Tamil movie, the Kabaddi Association of Malaysia's (KAM) annual general meeting (AGM)-cum-election this Wednesday is not going to be a heartwarming affair. Instead, it is already labelled an "action-packed thriller" even before their members and delegates head to Sungai Petani, Kedah, to elect the office bearers for the 2011-2014 term. KAM president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (pic) won his seat "uncontested" despite being challenged by Kabbadi Association of Selangor (KAS) council memb er D atuk Dr Shanmughanathan Vellanthurai. Shanmughanathan's nomination was rejected by KAM after they discovered he is not listed as a KAS council member with the Sports Commissioner's Office. This was confirmed by KAM vice-president Dr G. Krishnan.

However, Mailsport learnt Shanmughanathan was appointed as a KAS council member during a council meeting on May 18 at the MIC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. This appointment was relayed to Shanmughanathan in a letter dated May 20 and signed by KAS president T. Mohan. KAS then sent a letter to the Sports Commissioner's Office on Sept 18 notifying them of Shanmughanathan's appointment. There are also grouses over the manner the AGM was called. Article 12.2 of the KAM constitution states the "AGM must be held no later than Aug 30 and a notice of the meeting, together with an audited financial statement of the previous year, must be sent to the respective affiliates at least 15 days before the AGM." Apparently, the financial statement was not distributed while the AGM is being held a month later than expected. Shanmughanathan is clearly disappointed as he believes KAM
also violated Articles 12.4 and 12.5 of the constitution. Article 12.4 reads "nominees must hold posts in the State associations, nominated by any affiliate and supported by another two affiliates". Meanwhile, Article 12.5 says "nomination forms must be distributed 21 days before the AGM and received by the secretary of the affiliates seven days before the AGM". MAYBANK coach Wallace Tan is happy to take home three points against Armed Forces despite a below par performance. The bankers had suffered narrow 3-2 losses in their opening two matches against Sapura and KL Hockey Club (KLHC). "Yes, we struggled but most important is that we have a win to our name now. The Armed Forces boys worked really hard," said Wallace. "The positives I can take from this is that we dominated the match. It was difficult in the firsthalf but we got a few good breaks early in the second-half and that led to goals." Wallace insists his side have been improving since their first match against Sapura despite yesterday's performance. "The tight fixture has taken a toll on my boys. Three games in five days is not easy. With back-toback games it is hard for any team to maintain their performance," added Wallace. "Silambam, silat and even sepak takraw conduct their elections similarly." Krishnan stressed Shahidan "won the presidency uncontested". "There was a nominee from Selangor but we found out that he was not a council member of KAS so his nomination was rejected on technical grounds. As far as we are concerned, Shahidan has won and we will only be conducting elections for the vice-president's post," he said.

SCOTLAND captain and scumhalf Rory Lawson was left to lament winger Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino's exceptional late winning try which gave Argentina a 13-12 win in a bruising Pool B thriller and left his own side facing an early exit. The Scots must now beat England to have any hope of progressing to the knockout stages after this agonising defeat. The Samoans moved into second place in the pool behind defending champions South Africa. However, if Wales secure a bonus-point win over Namibia today and then beat Fiji in their final game, Samoa will need to beat the Springboks to have any chance of progressing to the quarterfinals.
Samoa's failure to gain a try bonus-point against Fiji harmed their chances of reaching the knockout stages but Manu backed Fiji's Pacific Island rivals to push the South Africans all the way in their final match of the pool. "Samoa have got a big task in front of them but anything is possible in this tournament. They've certainly proved today (yesterday) that they're capable of putting a performance on for the full 80 minutes," said Manu. "South Africa will have

O'Gara was instrumental in the win, finishing with 15 points and missing just one shot at goal in a Man-of-the-Match display. Defeat to Italy can dump Ireland out of the tournament and O'Gara insisted it was vital to continue their strong form. "We're in good shape but it counts for nothing unless we do the business in the final round. There's always some catch with this team. It's a big weekend but it's a weekend to look forward to," he said. "Now we have the momentum and it's important that we don't let go of it. Once you have momentum in sport, you must make the most of it. Mentally the squad is in a good place and that's probably more important than to be in a good place physically." O'Gara's performance left head coach Declan Kidney with a selection headache for the crucial showdown with Italy in Dunedin. Jonathan Sexton is first choice flyhalf, but has yet to convince in his starts against the United States and Australia. "I've always felt like I have an important role to play for this team, whether it's as a starter or coming on," said O'Gara. "There's a role for me and a really important one. Singapore Grand Prix. The 42-year-old seventime champion, driving for Mercedes, clipped the back of Perez's Sauber as he prepared to pass him on lap 28 of a 61-lap race. Perez was unhurt in the collision, in which an airborne Schumacher crashed into the barriers and was eliminated from the race. Perez was able to continue but had to make a pit-stop because of a puncture. Schumacher said the accident was the result of a misunderstanding, but the race stewards gave him an official reprimand.
Perez said: "I think Michael was too optimistic with what he tried. It is a shame to have lost a place to Felipe (Massa) in the end, but the tyres were finished and I couldn't defend anymore." Schumacher said: "It was a very unfortunate ending to my race and obviously I am a bit disappointed. "What happened was what I would call a misunderstanding between Sergio and myself. In the second last singles, Caroline Hedwall, two down two to play against Ryann O'Toole, won the last two holes for a vital half point. Suzann Pettersen had started the fightback. One down with three to play against Michelle Wie, she pulled out a final hole win. The world No 2 birdied the final three holes, holing from eight feet at the last. It was a first ever Solheim singles win for the 30-year-old Norwegian, and a bitter defeat for Wie. For Alison Nicholas's European team, the 7-5 singles score meant it was a fourth win from 12 contests — but first since 2003 — and they will go to Colorado Golf Club in two years' time hoping to win in America for the first time. Breno's arrest catches club off-guard
BAYERN MUNICH manager Jupp Heynckes said the club were unaware of Breno's personal problems, after the defender was arrested for allegedly setting fire to his own villa. The Brazilian has also received psychiatric treatment after the incident, with Heynckes confirming that the news of Breno's arrest came as a massive surprise to the club. "Before we can say anything concrete, we have to wait and see what happens after further investigations — otherwise this is all speculation," Heynckes told Ligatotal! Van Persie delighted with century ARSENAL skipper Robin van Persie (pic) is delighted to bag his 100th goal for Arsenal after netting a brace to reach the milestone in the 3-0 win at home to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. The Dutchman scored his 99th and 100th goals for the Gunners to put Arsenal 2-0 up before Alex Song sealed the win, putting last week's dramatic 4-3 defeat to Blackburn Rovers behind them. "I'm ver y proud," the Dutchman told the club's website. "I'm only the 17th player in the history of Arsenal players to pass 100 goals. It is a big achievement. The fans were amazing. It has been hard for them and us but we can move forward now. You could see everyone smiling after saying 'this is what we want'." The Senegal international claimed his first goal for the club after, in Pardew's opinion, finally shaking off the after effects of fasting during Ramadan. LEVANTE defeated nineman Espanyol 3-1 this morning to go third in the Primera Liga, a third win in three matches to illustrate their victory over Real Madrid last weekend was no fluke. The modest Valencia-based club have 11 points, the same as second-placed Barcelona, and trail the champions only on goal difference after a week which also saw them beat Real 1-0 last Sunday and Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in midweek.

CHELSEA attacker Juan Mata is looking forward to a “very special match” when he returns to old club Valencia in a Champions League Group E clash on Thursday (2.45am). Mata signed for the Blues for £23 million (RM112.8m) towards the end of the summer transfer window and he is excited about returning to the Mestalla and is hopeful for a rousing reception from the home supporters. The 23-year-old spent four years at the Primera Liga outfit, making over 100 appearances where he established himself as a regular first-team player as well as winning an international call-up for Spain, so he expects the reunion to be quite emotional. “It is going to be a special and emotional match for me playing so soon after leaving Valencia,” Mata told the Daily Star. “But my priority now is to win for Chelsea. But I will try to be respectful if I do score and not celebrate. I was there for four years and had a wonderful time. “Everything was positive and I had great teammates
there with whom I still keep in touch. Even though we will be rivals shortly, I am still going to do the best I can.” Andre Villas-Boas’ side started their campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win against German club Bayer Leverkusen while Valencia opened with a goalless draw at Genk. And Mata is hopeful manager Villas-Boas will allow him a free role in Spain, which he is thoroughly enjoying. “He tells me the attacking style he wants me to use and to have greater contact with my teammates. A FURIOUS Felipe Massa confronted Lewis Hamilton after the Singapore Grand Prix, as the drivers followed up their clash on the track with an angry exchange. Brazilian Massa accused the 2008 champion Hamilton of not using his mind following a collision as they scrapped for fifth place in the early stages. The Ferrari driver, who suffered a puncture that spoiled his race, said Hamilton, of McLaren, had almost caused a dangerous accident and demanded that the sport’s ruling body, the FIA, penalise him. Massa confronted his rival in the mixed zone, where drivers talk to the media, slapping Hamilton on the shoulder before spinning him round to offer a sarcastic thumbsup, and telling him he had done a “good job, very good job.”
Hamilton responded by shouting: “Don’t touch me, man. Don’t touch me.” Asked to explain the incident, Hamilton said: “Well, there you go.” He then left without commenting further. Massa said: “How many races this year has he done this? He went in the wrong direction and he paid and he never learned. The FIA are looking for sure for that, because he is doing that so many times. “I think he is not learning. I tried to speak to him after we waited, but he didn’t listen to me. “I called to him two times, but he didn’t listen to me, he went past me. He didn’t even look to me...
