MUAMMAR GADDAFI is dead. The former Libyan strongman was killed by fighters who overran his home town and final bastion in Sirte yesterday, the country’s new leaders said. His bloodied body was stripped and displayed around the world from images taken from a cellphone video. A formal declaration of liberation will be made today, Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said in Tripoli. Accounts of Gaddafi’s final hours were hazy but top officials of the National Transitional Council (NTC) said he had died of wounds sustained in clashes. One account said NTC fighters found him hiding in a drainage culvert (below) when his convoy of vehicles fleeing Sirte was stopped by a Nato air strike. Another said he told his captors “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot”. One of Gaddafi’s sons, Saif al-Islam, was at large but was surrounded after also trying to flee Sirte. Another son, Mo’tassim, had been killed earlier in the day. World leaders greeted the death of Gaddafi, describing it as the end of despotism, tyranny, dictatorship and war in Libya.

Thriving black market for workers T H E bi g d e m an d for maids, caused partly by Indonesia's two-year moratorium, has given rise to a black market providing illegal maids. A spokesman for ASK Maid Agency Sdn Bhd said their business had been badly affected by the freeze because Indonesian maids were the mostsought after. "Households which cannot wait for the ban to be lifted have resorted to sourcing the maids from the black market," he said. Reena Raj, speaking for Azam Daya Maid Agency Sdn Bhd, confirmed some former customers had sourced Indonesian and Filipina maids through the black market. "Many of our customers who want legal Indonesian maids have been sending their children to day-care centres although it costs more," she said. Maid ban to end Indonesia will lift two-year moratorium on Dec 1

INDONESIA will resume sending maids to Malaysia from Dec 1, marking an end to the more than two years of moratorium first imposed in June 2009. The decision was announced at a joint news conference by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the end of annual consultations here yesterday. "We know that we have many Indonesian nationals working in Malaysia," Susilo said. "We have therefore agreed to give protection and assistance to these workers. We also agreed the amendment

to the 2006 memorandum of understanding on recruitment and placement of Indonesian domestic workers will bring a positive impact to Indonesia. "God willing, on Dec 1 we shall normalise this." Indonesia imposed the moratorium on maids to Malaysia following reports of abuse of Indonesian maids at the hands of Malaysian employers. A series of negotiations were later held that led to the signing of amendments to the 2006 protocol in Bandung on May 30 this year. However, issues concerning the mechanisms to implement the protocol, particularly on

the protection of maids and employers, delayed the lifting of the moratorium. Najib welcomed the decision, saying the agreement was reached as both countries had managed to resolve issues concerning the processof bringing in the Indonesian maids. He said the joint special task force set up to handle the matter had been required to submit a full report to him and Susilo next month. "All problems and constraints have now been resolved. The report by the task force will be submitted to me and President Susilo during the Asean Summit in Bali

on Nov 17-18," he said. "God willing, the moratorium will be lifted on Dec 1." Najib also reminded wouldbe employers in Malaysia not to betray the trust given by Indonesia. He hoped Malaysians would reciprocate with kindness the sincerity of the Indonesian president in lifting the ban, and not abuse their maids. "The important thing is to not commit any form of abuse either physical or psychological because this will hurt their feelings. Don't let one or two incidents sour the whole thing," he said. "I ask that all would-be employers understand this."

EMPLOYERS cannot expect to hire a maid from Indonesia as early as Dec 1 although Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono announced the lift on the maid ban yesterday. Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa) president Jeffrey Foo said it could be early next year when Indonesian maids become available here. " T h e m a i d s h av e t o undergo several procedures, including training sessions, medical check-ups and obtaining work permits and this could take at least two to three months," he told The Malay Mail. "However, those who want to hire Indonesian maids can now apply through our member agents but will have to be patient when it comes to getting the maids." Foo said members of the association expected 3,000 to 5,000 applications for Indonesian maids each month. "There is a preference here for Indonesian maids because of language and cultural similarities, so demand for maids from other countries may drop," he said. "Our government must also come up with a mechanism to ensure Indonesian maids are not banned from coming here again and, towards this, Papa wants to help the government as much as we can." Indonesia had imposed a ban on their maids coming to Malaysia in June 2009 following complaints of the maids being ill-treated, overworked, cheated, abused and beaten to death by Malaysian employers. On May 30 this year, Indonesia and Malaysia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), that included the lifting of the freeze, after ironing out several issues on the matter.

Academicians defend Aziz Bari 'Suspension of constitutional expert a dangerous precedent'

ACADEMICIANS have come out in defence of Prof Abdul Aziz Bari, who was suspended over his comments on the Sultan of Selangor's decree regarding the Aug 3 Selangor Religious Department (Jais) raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC). They believe the suspension, by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) against Aziz on Wednesday, would have negative implications on the reputation of local universities and could set a dangerous precedent where universities can censor academicians. Universiti Teknologi Mara Policy Studies lecturer Prof Dr Shaharuddin Baharuddin said the suspension was against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's message of political transformation. Shaharuddin likened the move to censor academicians to "taking away the keris from a Malay warrior". “We need to have some

He said Abdul Aziz was a constitutional expert and his statement was within his field of expertise. “The university should not be pressured by politicians, they are not professors,” he said. UCSI University's Faculty of Economics and Policy Science Dr Ong Kian Ming said he had always viewed Abdul Aziz as a public intellectual who was willing to contribute, shape and influence discourse on important constitutional issues. Ong said Abdul Aziz’s comments on the Sultan's statement was one such important contribution. “In a context of increasing

political competition at the State and national levels, we should be having more, not less, academic discussion on the role of the Sultans on different matters, including as the head of Islam at the State level,” he said. Universiti Sains Malaysia Social Sciences Deputy Dean Dr P. Sivamurugan stressed that Abdul Aziz should have been given the opportunity to defend himself before IIUM suspended him. “The university’s actions will not help but further deteriorate public perception of local varsities,” he said. However, Universiti Utara Malaysia political science lecturer Dr Mohd Azizudin Sani begged to differ and said there were provisions in law where a person cannot insult the Sultan or Ruler. “To be fair, there is also an issue of academic freedom but we have laws that protect the Rulers and we must respect them,” he said.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah (pic) said this new ruling would be implemented soon to keep tabs on the activities of foreign students. " We a r e concerned with foreign students here being involved in crimes like drugs and vice, and habitual absence from classes could mean involvement in undesirable activities," he said after officiating at the "Silicon Valley Comes to Malaysia" (SVC2M) conference at a hotel here yesterday. "Colleges and universities must monitor the attendance of foreign students and those who are absent for three consecutive days should be reported to the Immigration Department for investigations to be carried out."

He also said an average of 20 private colleges had some of their courses suspended every year. "Most of the suspended courses were short-term courses that did not seem to be beneficial," he said. Hotspots raided Port Klang's hub of gambling outlets thrown into chaos

PORT KLANG’s entertainment district, comprising Lorong Cempening and Jalan Beringin, was thrown into chaos on Wednesday night when punters fled following a raid on the gambling outlets there. The joint 8pm raid, was led by Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Society Division from South Klang police headquarters and assisted by enforcement officers of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commision (MACC), Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). The area, notorious for its rows of unmarked shops with gambling activities within, had been raided numerous times but the activities resumed weeks after. In the first raid in Jalan Cempening, the raiding party arrested two gambling operators in their 20s at the outlet. More than 20 gamblers were seen running helter-skelter into the streets to get away from the dragnet. Azman said the team raided 12 premises, the first in Lorong Cempening. The remaining 11 were in Jalan Beringin which were abandoned when the team arrived. Police believe the operators and gamblers had been alerted by their counterparts from Lorong Cempening.

Some of the premises were also locked, forcing the municipal council's officers to use crowbars and electric cutters to gain entry. “We seized 286 computers with online gambling software from all the premises,” said Azman. I n i t i a l i nv e s t i g at i o n s revealed gambling operators allowed only regular or trusted customers into their premises and most were equipped with CCTV for

monitoring purposes. Customers were required to pay at the counter before being provided with a password to key-in at the computer to start their betting. Additional services such as snacks, biscuits, soft drinks and cigarettes were also provided. Azman said all items seized and the two suspects had been taken to South Klang police headquarters for further investigations.

A common reply from welloff parents when informed their child had committed a crime is: "My kid didn't do it. His friend did!" Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah described the case of parents being in denial for wrongs committed by their children as a major concern. "This mindset has to change as there is an increase of crimes committed by students, mostly involving theft of motorcycles," he said. "Up to September, 461 students had been arrested for 257 criminal cases.This compares with 448 students and 295 cases last year." He said parents often shift the blame to other students when informed by schools or police their children had done something wrong. "They are in denial as such acts by their children could

disgrace them. They have preconceived notions their children are innocent." Tun Hisan said this could have a reverse effect on the children. "Such students are led to believe they can get away with anything. They know their parents would back them regardless of the consequences." Tun Hisan told reporters this after launching a seminar organised by the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation at the Selangor police headquarters yesterday, which was attended by over 260 teachers from secondary schools in the State. The seminar was to guide teachers on how to tackle crime at schools. Tun Hisan also urged teachers to change the mindset that crime prevention activities in schools require money and should not use this excuse to avoid such programmes.

THREE more suspects, including a woman, were arrested at Bandar Sungai Buaya on Wednesday in connection with a car-theft syndicate dubbed Ah Kow Gang. This comes in the wake of the arrest of the mastermind and three other members at their apartment in Seri Kembangan on Sunday. Hulu Selangor district police chief Supt Norel Azmi Yahya Affandi said the latest three suspects, aged 26 to 29, were picked up at their houses in Bandar Sungai Buaya on Wednesday afternoon. “We seized another four stolen vehicles from the suspects," he said. African students are easy mules THE sudden rise of drug mules involving Africans could be because Malaysia is a popular destination for young Africans to further their studies. Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said African drug syndicates targeted fellow Africans arriving here legitimately to study in local colleges, to later recruit them as drug mules. “When these students return to their country for holidays, they are approached by the syndicates to smuggle drugs to Malaysia. Many fall prey believing they would make a lot of money," he said. Forty-three Nigerians have been arrested at Malaysian airports todate for smuggling drugs, compared with seven last year. A special task force set up to monitor drug smuggling activities mainly at airports and border points has been successful. So far, 119 people had been caught at airports with only four being Malaysians. The foreigners were mainly from African and Middle Eastern countries.

do, the brand will start picking up fans the way Audi is doing right now. Underpinning every Skoda is the mighty engineering resources of the Volkswagen-Audi Group and VAG is known for producing some of the best engineered vehicles in the mass and premium segment. This is the second-generation Superb, the flagship model for Skoda and this time we see that they have gone for maximum space and refinement. The car is big, the long wheelbase allows all passengers to be Shaquille O’Neal without being cramped. Given the size and 1.8-litre TSI engine, we were quite skeptical that the combination could be anything other than struggling, if not outright asthmatic. Within a kilometre of driving, the engine proved us wrong by being energetic, refined and willing to lug around nearly two tonnes of Eastern European metal at a pace that would make smaller cars with bigger engines blush with embarrassment. With the Superb engine, size clearly does not matter, a light dab on the throttle and the combination of supercharger and turbocharger is summoned to bulk up the displacement through force-feeding. The engine cranks out 158 healthy horses and they can twist 250Nm of torque from as low as 1,500rpm, giving the Superb genuine big-car performance and refinement. Throughout our week with the Superb, the most impressive characteristic of the car is its low level of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH). The engine size and hand-me-down platform were our biggest concern and we thought that it would contribute to making the car feel cheap. We were wrong. Obviously the Superb cannot match whatever that Audi can dish out with the current A4 and may not be able to stay in the same league as the all-new Volkwagen Passat but Skoda has taken the platform and made it into a believable executive transport. At a pinch, it may even work as a limousine. The suspension set-up is particularly noteworthy for its ability to soak up imperfections and isolating the cabin from surface irregularities and excessive vibrations. What is also impressive is the way the softlysprung Superb still manages to avoid being wal-

lowy at high speeds, giving it impressively Teutonic driving manners. Clearly the car has a lot of potential, the Malaysian specifications is quite impressive, with leather seats, touch-screen central display, dual-zone climate control, active headlamps and 7-speed DSG gearbox. It is also quite packed with electronic driver aids and they include the usual roster of antilock brakes and stability control that is joined by Hill-Hold Control which is a nice feature on the DSG tansmission that can slip backwards on slopes. Another interesting feature of the car is the Twindoor rear opening that can be opened wide like a hatchback or a bootlid. Skoda must have put quite a lot of engineering effort into this feature because it does not rattle or make

any noise despite being a rather complicated mechanism with two hinge-points. Being part of the VAG empire means having to abide to certain standards and rummaging through the vast corporate parts bin for common components, the result is a car that is wellbuilt using high-grade components. The delicate detailing that is found on VW and Audi has successfully migrated to Skoda and this helps to give owners confidence in their new purchase. The sight and touch of familiar VAG stalks, buttons, sliders, knobs and switches gives the car a generally solid feel. Let’s put it like this, the Superb 1.8TSI is almost as good as a Volkswagen Passat. Actually the real competitor for the Superb is the Passat and that is coming soon to Malaysia. According to VW Malaysia, the price of the Passat will hover around the RM186,000 mark and that makes it cheaper than the Superb which is priced at RM188,000. Although the Superb is a longwheelbase vehicle and more spacious than the Passat, there is no arguing with the VW badge.

With such a wide range of taste in the luxury market, Infinity is hoping to capture those who want something different, a brand that challenges conventions and offer youthful, unique designs that are combined with the latest technology. Edaran Tan Chong Motor and Auto Dunia has joined forces to form Inspired Motor, the distributor of the Infiniti brand. The launch of their showroom at the swanky Chulan Square

showed that they mean business and that Infiniti is here to take a sizeable chunk of the Malaysian luxury automobile market. The aim is to have five per cent of the luxury segment pie in five years time. Malaysia is the second country in Asean to open its doors to Infiniti, Indonesia beat us to it by a few months and the region forms a key market for Infiniti’s global expansion plans, which were seriously halted after the brand’s global introduction in 1989, due to financial problems within Nissan. With their books back in the black and healthy encouragement from Renault Nissan Alliance Carlos Ghosn, who is keen for Infiniti to match the likes of Lexus and European luxury brands, they are now embark-

ing on an aggressive expansion plan. The models that will be offered in Malaysia are the EX and FX crossover, M-Saloon and GCoupe. The entry point for the Infiniti range is the EX at RM380,000, followed by the curvaceous G Coupe at RM415,000 and if you want four doors, add RM10,000 M-Sedan. Top of the range is the FX crossover which clocks in at RM435,000. Interestingly, all the models are offered in 37 forms, which

means that under their bonnet is a 3.7-litre V6 with 320 hp and 360 Nm at 5,200 rpm. Interesting features of this motor are dual continuously variable timing on both the intake and exhaust side. The exhaust also gets variable lift and duration, which helps to spread the torque curve over a wider rev range and generally improve on power delivery. On the business end of the V6 is a seven-speed auto-shifter with Adaptive Shift Control and Sport mode. It has the option for manual shift and this invokes the Downshift Rev Matching or DRM that blips the throttle to match engine speed to vehicle speed. All variants get a very long equipment list that includes leather, electric seat adjust-

ments, moonroof on some models, keyless go, 2Gb music memory, Bose speakers, rear view camera, 7-inch centre console display, tyre pressure monitor and magnesium shift paddles.

Sabah keeper Syed Adney wants to play for Selangor next season SABAH goalkeeper Syed Adney Syed Hussein (pic) revealed he would consider his options and targets donning the Merah Kuning colours next season. "I am unhappy being sidelined for most of the season at Sabah. I feel I need to be playing a lot more to further my career," said Syed Adney. "I want to be playing top level football week in and week out, so I'm keeping my options open." Selangor are currently lacking a solid character in between the posts as seen throughout the league, forcing the FA of Selangor to snap up USM's G. Jeevananthan on loan for the Malaysia Cup. Syed Adney, who turns 25 next month, started his career with the Selangor U-19 team in 2004 before earning a spot in the President Cup team a year

later. He graduated to the senior team in 2007 and even played for the national team at the Korat Sea Games the same year. He left for Kelantan last year and featured for the Rhinos this year. He would also consider playing for Sarawak if the terms are right. Sabah earned promotion to the Super League this season and settled for 10th spot in the league. Selangor, meanwhile, finished third. Sarawak are set to feature in the Super League next year after finishing second in the Premier League this season. They are in the midst of beefing up their squad and have even roped in two Cameroon players — Alexis Ngambi and Kalle Sone. Meanwhile, Selangor are bent on ending their fairy tale run in the Malaysia Cup with a bang.

TENAGA NASIONAL BHD (TNB) may have one foot in the final but they will not take Sapura lightly in the returnleg. TNB coach Lailin Abu Hassan (pic) believes Sapura, in the first-leg, showed that they have the capability to overturn the deficit. TNB raced to a 4-0 lead as Sapura lost concentration in the first 15 minutes of the match. When they tightened their game, Sapura scored three and conceded one. "There is no way we can afford to sit back and think of the final. We have to take this match seriously," said Lailin. "We did open them up in the first-leg but they recovered and dominated the rest of the match. Fortunately, we had a big lead by then." Lailin believes he cannot use the same tactics as in the first match as Sapura will be prepared for it. TNB will be relying on Faiz Helmi Jalil, Man-of-theMatch in the first-leg, to expose Sapura again. Meanwhile, Sapura coach I. Vikneswaran is glad to welcome back skipper S. Kuhan. After all, he is the overall leader after two rounds of the championship — in Kangar and Johor Baru — with a total of 18 points and another encouraging round in Malacca would give him a serious shot at the overall title by the time the fourth and final round comes in Seremban next month. In any case, Muhammad Rafiq and his co-driver Sean Gregory in their Subaru Impreza are the defending overall champions, and in his own words, is ready to defend his title again. But he admits he has got a fight on his hands. Karamjit Singh, the nine-time overall champion is still very much in the hunt even though he is on 12 points and lying third overall. HE is 1.79m tall, not bad looking and blessed with a pair of feet good enough to attract attention at the ongoing 100PLUS Super Cup Champions’ School U-17 championship. For Muhammad Shahmin Izwan Abdullah, football has been his only indulgence in his sporting life and he is making heads turn. His height alone would have made others notice him but his skills are equally impressive too as SMK Kulim clinched their place in the final of the 14-team championship. H i s te a m m a te s l o o k up to him for leadership qualities and the coaches plan the team's strategy around his versatility and his commitment towards the team's cause. Naturally, Muhammad Shahmin is the first name to be penciled in the line-up. "But I never represented the district or State at the U-12 or U-15 level in football or any other sport. My playing days are only confined to my school field only. "It was in Form Three that I was serious about the game and coach Fakrul Rozi picked me for the school team. From then on, my interest in the game took on a different challenge. But I still don't know whether I am good enough to represent the State. I hope to someday," said Muhammad Shahmin. He is a key player for SMK Kulim. Someone whom coach Fakrul described as strong, talented and versatile. "I can play him in defence, midfield and attack and he will do a good job for me. He has got a matured football mind. If he concentrates on football I am sure he will make it,"

said Fakrul. Muhammad Shahmin is also an above average student with an eye on science subjects. "He scored four As in his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia trial examinations last month. If he can combine academic and sports and do well in both, I am happy for him," said Fakrul. Wilder celebrations at Old Trafford on Sunday if City beat United ON Tuesday at Etihad Stadium, with seconds of the match against Villarreal remaining, Manchester City's Champions League future was hanging by a thread. Had Sergio "Kun" Aguero not steered the ball in at the far post, City would have been looking at a return of two points from their opening three group stage games, and their chances of making the knockout rounds would have all but disappeared. That goal from Aguero though, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, has given City renewed hope of extending their first ever excursion in Europe's top club competition. ers and fans of the club, while the reaction from manager Roberto Mancini was, quite simply, unprecedented. Sophisticated, urbane, somewhat phlegmatic at times, Mancini has what some would refer to as a typical Italian shoulder shrug in his arsenal of mannerisms — the 'thesethings-happen-what-are-yougoing-to-do?' type of gesture that seems to cut through any suggestion of existential angst. On Tuesday in Manchester, Mancini celebrated like a whirling dervish — punching the air, hugging anything that moved, in a genuine outpouring of passion and emotion that was as endearing as anything we've seen from him since he arrived on England's shores. An element of relief may well have been one of the ingredients in the recipe for euphoria, but there can be little doubt that Mancini really let himself go, and in so doing, demonstrated to City supporters what his job means to him and the extent to which he is committed to the success of the club. In these cynical times, whatever your allegiances may be, it was a refreshing sight. Mancini's delight must also have been partly due to his in-game decisions being vindicated. City didn't play well at all in the match, and even Mancini admitted afterwards that they had been "lucky" to get the win, but his decision to take off Adam Johnson before half-time (the England winger was not happy), and introduce Aguero after the hour mark, proved to be insightful and effective.

GameOn with Andrew Leci Let's also bear in mind that Mancini's substitutions in recent history haven't met with unqualified success — Edin Dzeko throwing "a right strop" when withdrawn against Bayern Munich, and Carlos Tevez refusing to play in the very same game. Mancini could perhaps have been forgiven for being tentative about making changes on Tuesday, but he wasn't, and City are still in with a great shout of emerging from the Champions League group stage at the first time of asking. They're also not too badly placed in terms of the Premier League title, ahead of their biggest test of the season to date. Sunday sees what it undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited Manchester derby in many a year, coming as it does with the light blue side ahead of the red in the standings, for the first time since... the statisticians are still working on it, and I'm still scratching my head. We may well get to see the extent to which the power balance in Manchester has changed, if indeed it has, as well as whether City are genuine title contenders this season. It will also be an opportunity to gauge Mancini's mindset, bearing in mind the criticism he has come in for in terms of the occasionally negative tactics he has deployed since arriving at the club. City though are top of the

table, and while they won't be the favourites at Old Trafford — no side ever are, surely — they have to be in with as good a chance as at any time in the 37 years since Denis Law's infamous backheel secured the points for City, and condemned United to relegation. Stone Roses bassist Mani was once asked if the band would ever get back together. He remarked that it would happen "the day after Manchester City win the European Cup". This week, the Manchester group that split up more than 15 years ago, but which, at their height, was regarded as among the most influential British artists of all time, announced that they are reforming. While one win against Villarreal doesn't suggest that Champions League glory is just around the corner for Mancini's expensively-assembled outfit, stranger things have been known to happen. OLYMPIAKOS defender Francois Modesto (pic) found a novel way to detract attention from a failed dive attempt — by pulling down his opponent's shorts. Modesto reacted angrily after he was lambasted for appearing to feign injury by AEK Athens centrehalf Cala during a Greek Super League clash on Saturday. MANCHESTER UNITED winger Nani is banking on their incredible home record to see them to victory in the big clash with Manchester City on Sunday. The Red Devils, incredibly, have dropped just two points in their last 25 home games, and they came against West Brom last season after enjoying a two-goal lead. It is an amazing statistic, dating back to Chelsea’s triumph at Old Trafford in April last year. It ensures United approach this Sunday’s encounter in confident mood. “City have a fantastic team with fantastic players,” said Nani. “They are playing a lot of good stuff and it will be difficult to play against them. “But we should not forget that we are United. It’s a police matter now, says ministry

THE Education Ministry have left the bashing of a 14-year-old SMK Seri Titiwangsa student to the police. The ministry’s sports division director Ee Hong, had in an email to Mailsport yesterday, said they were aware of the incident where a Form Two lad was bashed up by several fifth formers at the KL Schools Sports Excellence Centre at Jalan Cochrane on Oct 3. Apparently, the incident took place after the senior school athletes believed the youngster had snitched on them resulting in a teacher raiding their hostel room.
