Shahrizat: Allegations against NFC a bid to undermine my leadership and destroy Wanita Umno

I see this as a political agenda and attempt by the Opposition to weaken the spirit and movement of Wanita Umno. I would like to tell them we cannot easily be demolished. I’m sorry, we are not soft, okay.”

DATUK SERI Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has vehemently defended her family against the allegations made by the Opposition on the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) controversy. The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said the allegations were a political conspiracy by the Opposition to undermine her leadership and destroy Wanita Umno. She said Pakatan Rakyat (PR) was not really interested in NFC’s financial situation and only wanted to gain political mileage. “Personally, I see this as a political agenda and attempt by the Opposition to weaken the spirit and movement of Wanita Umno. I would like to tell them we cannot easily be demolished. I’m sorry, we are not soft, okay,” the Wanita Umno chief told reporters at a Press conference yesterday. The 2010 Auditor-General’s Report found the RM73.64 million government project failed to meet

By ASRUL HADI ABDULLAH SANI asrul@mmail.com.my its target of breeding 8,000 cattle last year because NFC had only produced 3,289 cattle. Auditor-General Tan Sri Ambrin Buang said poor management by the corporation was the main factor behind the dismal performance with the company failing to train 130 farmers for the project. The report also said the 2,023 ha farmland and its facilities managed by NFC in Gemas, Negri Sembilan, were not properly maintained. On June 24, The Malay Mail reported that NFC’s executive chairman is Shahrizat’s husband, Datuk Dr Mohamad Salleh Ismail, while the minister’s three children — Izmir, 31, Izran, 27, and Izzana, 25, — are chief executive and executive directors in the company, respectively. Shahrizat’s family and has repeatedly demanded explanation over NFC’s failure. “I think my family does not deserve to get this kind of things said by the Opposition. I don’t think they deserve the unwarranted allegations because they work very hard but anyway, that is not the point,” said Shahrizat. The government has maintained

that NFC has been a success with a total of 8,016 cattle brought to the farm from 2008 and 2010. NFC was established as a High Impact Project under the 9th Malaysia Plan, towards attaining 40 per cent self-sufficiency in beef production by 2010. • See also pg2

Show proof, Kg Baru secretariat told

FEDERAL Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin (pic) challenged the Kampung Baru Development Secretariat to show proof that the Kampung Baru Malay Agricultural Settlement Administrative Board is under the purview of the Selangor government. "They are coming up with proof? By all means, please," he told reporters here. He was commenting on a statement by secretariat chairman Ahmad Zambri As'ad Khuzami that the agency was still under the purview of the Selangor government. Refuting the statement, Raja Nong Chik said the agency was chaired by the Kuala Lumpur mayor and, therefore, was under the purview of his ministry. "Even the power to reshuffle the board membership lies with the federal government," he said. Raja Nong Chik said the issue had been raised deliberately for political purpose.

Khairy backs NFC Allegations that it is a failed govt project a 'wild political attack'

UMNO Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin has refuted the allegations by the Opposition against the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC), which they claimed was a failed government project. He said the allegations were "a wild political attack" against the government and "weak in terms of facts". "First, their accusation that NFC was given 5,000 acres (2,023 ha) of land in Gemas, Negri Sembilan, for free is false. NFC has never been given that much land. As an integrator of Pusat Fidlot Negara (PFN), it

was offered 1,500 acres on lease by the Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI). This was confirmed by the Menteri Besar himself," he said. "This means the land is not just 70 per cent smaller as claimed but it is also on lease." Speaking at a Press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday, the Rembau MP also denied claims that raw beef was sold by NFC to major restaurants in Singapore, namely Meatworks, Senor Santos, and Brawn.

"Any imports of raw beef to Singapore is impossible because the Singapore government prohibits the import of raw beef from Peninsular Malaysia due to fear of foot and mouth disease," he said. On claims that the NFC project had failed to reach its target under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP), which is 60,000 cattle a year, Khairy said the project only began in late 2008, a two-year delay after the commencement of the 9MP.

"In fact, it was stated on page 138 of the Auditor-General's 2010 Report that the target of producing 8,000 cows in 2010 was achieved," he said. He a l s o c r it i c i s e d t h e Opposition which said the government was lying when it said not all of the RM250 million soft loan was paid for NFC's usage. He said the accusation was based on NFC's financial report for Dec 31, 2009. "The RM250 million was also placed into a special account under NFC but tightly monitored by the government," Khairy said.

"To withdraw the money, NFC must justify it in paperwork and present it to the Authorised Technical Committee under the Veterinary Department which was specially set up to control and monitor the feedlot project." Khairy said the committee would approve the withdrawal "once it was satisfied". He said the process of withdrawing the money was strict. "The Opposition's claim of all the money being channelled to NFC is a lie. They have ignored the A-G's 2010 report," he said.

Pua: Not cheap at Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia 'RM1.4b THE Opposition yesterday claimed the government's Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M), designed to ease the people's burden, is not living up to its name. Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's claims that KR1M would be offering goods at 30 to 50 per cent lower than the market prices of similar products was misleading. "A shopping trip to local hy p e r m a r k e t s s u c h a s Carrefour and checking the price tags of products ranging from condensed creamer and canned sardines to dish washing liquid will immediately show that the truth is far from the claims made by Najib and the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister," Pua told reporters at the Parliament lobby. "While some products are indeed cheaper at KR1M, the price difference is far less than the claims of 30 per cent to 50 per cent for most products. "For example, KR1M claims to sell a 425g can of sardine for RM2.99 which can help save a whopping 51 per cent. However, checks in Carrefour showed that a can of sardine weighing the same is sold for RM2.49 which is 20 per cent cheaper than the one sold at KR1M. "Another example is KR1M charges RM1.90 for a bottle

STILL QUITE EXPENSIVE: Pua says that although some items at Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia may be cheaper, they are less than the '30 to 50 per cent' claim

of one litre 1Malaysia bleach, claiming savings of 36 per cent. However, one can easily purchase a one litre bottle of Carrefour or Tesco brand bleach for only RM1.29 which is 47 per cent cheaper than at KR1M." Pua, the DAP national publicity secretary, said even if the 1Malaysia products were cheaper, many were nowhere near the claimed savings. "KR1M charges RM4.89 for a 400g packet of frozen minced beef but in Carrefour, the Ramly branded packet costs RM5.29 or only eight per cent more instead of the claimed 18 per cent savings. "Based on a basket of 23 common daily household goods and food items bought at KR1M and Carrefour, it

shows that a customer will actually save eight per cent more at Carrefour by paying RM120.53 instead of RM130.49 at KR1M," he said. Pua said the manner which KR1M and the Barisan Nasional Cabinet ministers had been misleading the people with claims that the products sold at KR1M were cheaper "is completely irresponsible". "They should be investigated for breaching the Malaysian Code of Advertising Practice (MCAP)," he said. "In fact, it is the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and C onsu me r i s m Mi n i st r y which is responsible for regulating the industry and ensuring that consumers are

not cheated by misleading claims under the Consumer Protection Act 1999. "However, when the ministry itself is guilty of such offences as a result of Barisan Nasional's vested interest in KR1M, then it becomes a gross breach of its responsibility to the rakyat." Pua urged the government to stop misleading the people with false advertising. It should make claims that can only be substantiated with comparisons with products of equivalent quality. "We are happy if the government can promote quality products which are cheaper for the rakyat but such promotions should only apply to companies capable of delivering cheaper prices," he said.

THE Finance Ministry has refuted allegations that RM1.4 billion from the Treasury’s contingency fund has gone missing. Its deputy minister, Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin, said all unplanned expenses of the fund had been tabled and explained in the Dewan Rakyat in a Supplementary Supply Bill in March and April. "Maybe they (the Opposition) have forgotten about it or was absent when it was tabled and debated. The RM1.4 billion withdrawn from the fund last year has been explained and accounted for," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday. In clarifying the RM1.4 billion spent by the ministry, Dr Awang said the areas covered included cash amounting to about RM2 million given to the Election Commision for election-related matters. He was commenting on a statement by Parti Keadilan Rakyat adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday that RM1.4 billion of the RM1.5 billion 2010 contingency fund was missing. Anwar also claimed the reason behind the 17-day delay between the tabling of Budget 2012 and the Auditor-General’s Report was because the government was trying to hide the discrepancy in the fund.

RM1,500 minimum wage Selangor allocates RM10m to help State subsidiaries carry out policy

IN introducing a RM1,500 minimum wage for employees of State government-linked companies (GLCs) next year, the Selangor government will allocate RM10 million to aid struggling subsidiaries carry out the policy. The allocation would be spent on efforts to increase productivity of employees in State subsidiaries, Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said when tabling the Selangor Budget 2012 in the state assembly sitting yesterday. "The provision of minimum wage will have to be consistent with productivity of employees," he said. Abdul Khalid explained the real intention of the minimum wage policy introduced by the state government, was not to merely give out money but to also add to the knowledge and skills of those earning

low wages. "The state government does not intend to make them dependent on handouts in the future, but to possess the necessary knowledge and skills to compete and attain a higher pay," he said. He further announced Selangor civil servants would be given a half-month bonus or a minimum of RM500. The RM10 million allocation is part of a RM300 million grant called Selangorku Grant. The grant was created using dividend yields from state subsidiaries, operational profits from Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) and collected debts from Talam Corporation, among others. Abdul Khalid said the grant would be used for various initiatives targeted at increasing the living standards of people, including the improvement

Opposition head criticises budget OPPOSITION leader Datuk Mohamad Satim Diman (pic) yesterday criticised the Selangor Budget 2012 for the sources of capital used towards social programmes. "It is as if the Selangor government has good financial resources," he said after the state assembly sitting ended. Satim, who is assemblyman for Seri Serdang, claimed the State government accumulated capital through sale of assets held by st ate governmentlinked companies (GLCs). "For example, a Yayasan Selangor hostel and a certain housing project of the Selangor Development Corporation (PKNS) were sold," he said. "If they are genuine about helping people, why deprive people of housing?" Asked about the RM5 million grant for the Democracy Strengthening Programme under the Selangorku Grant initiative, Satim said it was a "waste of money". "It is as if the elections in the country were not fair all these years," he said.

"If it was unfair, how did Pakatan Rakyat win the State?" Satim said the Barisan Nasional assemblymen would not propose an alternative budget and instead expose the unfulfilled promises of the Selangor government to its people. "We will show their mismanagement," he said. However, Hulu Ke l a n g a s s e m blyman Saari Sungib defended the source of Selangorku Grant which is sourced from dividends of GLCs and operational profits from Me n t e r i B e s a r Incorporated (MBI). He said it was an achievement on the part of Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim. "It only took him three years to make things clear and address the problems in the GLCs," said Saari who also heads the Selangor Select Committee on State Agencies, Statutory Bodies and Subsidiaries, and had been critical of the top management of certain GLCs in recent past.

of urban infrastructure such as roads and drains, conservation of the environment, entrepreneurship programmes for youths and the construction of sporting facilities like futsal courts. At a later press conference, Abdul Khalid said the state government's budget was not focused on one-off payments, unlike the Federal Government's Budget 2012, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Abdul Khalid said the state government was able to spend RM300 million that would otherwise land in the hands of cronies of state subsidiaries due to an accountable administration. "This is the benefit from a system without corruption, cronyism and abuse of power.

ABDUL KHALID: Grant to be used for various initiatives

You can easily spend RM300 million on the people," he said. The total balanced budget, including the grant, is RM1.9 billion. Of this, a total of RM1 billion was allocated for management expenditure, out of

which RM323.1 million would be channeled for emoluments, RM371.4 million for supply and services, RM8.1 million for assets, RM284.2 million for fixed charges and grants as well as RM13.3 million for other expenditures. The remaining RM600 million was allocated for development, out of which RM411.1 million would be go towards the infrastructure sector, RM100.1 million for the social sector, RM84.3 million for the economy sector and RM4.6 million for the town sector. Other allocations include RM12.5 million for development of rural areas, RM2 million for poverty eradication programmes, RM2.2 million for economy development programmes for farmers and fishermen as well as RM2 million for development of cottage industries.

A total of RM 10million would be accorded to the 'Jom Shopping' programme for senior citizens, while RM4 million was for installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in strategic locations to increase safety and reduce crime across the state. The state government, Abdul Khalid further announced, is also expecting to increase annual tax collection next year, from RM530.98 million this year to RM574.674 million, and non-tax revenue from RM467.164 million to RM654.603 million. Aside that, it was stated the state government would also continue initiatives under the ‘Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor’ (Economy for Citizenry), including the 20 cubic metre free water programme and microcredit schemes.

Batang Kali rep suspended for shouting at Speaker BARELY an hour into the first day of the Selangor state assembly sitting for the fourth quarter of the year, Datuk Mohd Isa Abu Kassim (Batang Kali-BN) was suspended for a day for shouting at Speaker Datuk Teng Chang Khim and refusing to heed Teng's orders. The row between Mohd Isa and Teng began after Abdul Khalid answered a question from Datuk Mohamed Satim Diman (Sri Serdang-BN) on the allocation of RM500,000 to build kindergartens in various Tamil schools across the state. Mohd Isa proceeded to ask Abdul Khalid about initiatives conducted to increase the living standards of civil servants in the state.

WARNINGS IGNORED: Mohd Isa said his suspension by Teng is a 'travesty'

To this, Abdul Khalid replied that civil servants were also people of Selangor and therefore eligible for initiatives of the state for people earning below RM1,500. “Under the Selangor budget, we have allocated a

certain amount of capital for rewards and wages of civil servants,” he said. Ho w e v e r, Mo h d Is a was dissatisfied with the answer, and proceeded to ask the question again, albeit heatedly.

Teng interjected saying Abdul Khalid had already answered the question. Clearly crossed, Mohd Isa raised his voice at Teng for not acknowledging the legitimacy of his question. After repeated warnings to sit down, Teng suspended Mohd Isa for a day. Isa, however, felt his suspension was “not fair” and a “travesty”. “I was merely asking Mentri Besar (Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim) to explain the state government initiatives for civil servants under its Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES) programme,” he said. “But he did not answer the question. I was not the only one who was dissatisfied with his answer.”

RM300m for Selangorku Grant T H E S el angorku Gr ant , amounting to RM300 million, was created from dividend payments of State government-linked companies, operational costs of Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI), collected debts from Talam Corporation and restructuring of the Canal City project. Grants offered under the initiative include: ● Corruption and Poverty

Eradication programme (RM15 million) to combat corruption through non-governmental organisation Transparency International. Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the grant would be available for certain parties to conduct an audit into dubious operations of state subsidiaries. "It is also available for whistle-blowers who are in need of

legal representation but cannot afford to do so," he told a Press conference after unveiling the State budget. ● Democracy Strengthening programme (RM5 million) to increase awareness of Selangor voters about their democratic rights. The grant is to train volunteers count votes and check the right number of voters, among other things, Abdul

Khalid said. It would also help volunteers check details of voters registered with the Election Commission. ● Improving infrastructure (RM50 million) to repair roads, drainage systems and others. Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh said this was a major contribution from the State and that it was greatly needed.

THE family of missing Korean businessman Kim Chong Yong, 53, who migrated to Malaysia about two decades ago, are appealing for information on his whereabouts. Kim, a father of three, was last seen near Desa Sri Hatamas in the early hours of Oct 30. "On Oct 29, he told my mother, who was in South Korea, that he was going to the airport to meet someone but for some reason, he went to see someone near Desa Sri Hartamas instead," said Kim's eldest daughter, who declined to be named. "Some people at a bar near Desa Sri Hartamas said my father was there with a man from 9pm until 1am. My father briefly called the family on Oct 30 to ask if we were all right and that was

Kim's black Mercedes-Benz CLS350 was found at the One Ampang Avenue Condominium in Ampang by a friend of his brother-in-law on Oct 31. The front tyre on the driver's side had been changed to a spare tyre and the original tyre was found badly damaged in the trunk of the car. Cambodian MP: I’m not here for apology

By RAM ANAND ramanand@mmail.com.my

A CAMBODIAN parliamentarian says she is not here to extract an apology over alleged abuses on its citizens working as domestic helpers in Malaysia. Mu Sochua (pic), a prominent member of opposition party Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), said she wanted a mechanism to protect maids following a freeze on their employment in Malaysia by her government last month. She was responding to Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay’s statement that an apology would be made if the maid abuse allegations were true. “There is no point issuing an apology if we do not address the issue," Mu Sochua said at a Press conference at the Tenaganita headquarters in Jalan Gasing yesterday. "It is time for both governments to take stock and come out with standardised measures

to protect these women coming in as domestic workers.” On Oct 15, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen issued a circular declaring a temporary suspension on the training and sending domestic workers to Malaysia following allegations of abuse cases. Mu Sochua said Malaysia had to provide clear standards for Cambodian maids for the moratorium to be lifted. “Firstly, the prime minister (of Cambodia) has clearly outlined

the importance of having at least one day off. And a domestic worker should only work eight hours a day, not 24 hours.” She also wanted both countries to adopt measures based on global domestic worker standards set by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention and the Asean migrant workers declaration. However, Mu Sochua admitted Cambodia would also need to take definitive measures in standardising the terms for domestic workers first. “We need to have a ceiling to ensure we send quality domestic workers, not merely to fulfill Malaysia’s demand. We need to make sure measures are taken at our country before it can be adopted at another country.” Mu Sochua has discussed the issue with several Malaysian MPs, including R. Sivarasa (Subang), Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj (Sungai Siput), Tian Chua (Batu) and Charles Santiago (Klang).

Maids in Malaysia

● There are some 34,000 Cambodian maids in Malaysia with 30,000 coming in the last year alone. ● There are at least 3,000 maids in recruitment agencies in Cambodia who have received approval but are unable to travel to Malaysia because of the ban. ● There are at least 40,000 families in Malaysia waiting for a domestic helper. ● Abuse cases before the Indonesian domestic worker ban was imposed June 2009 stood at more than 1,000 a year. ● About 200 Cambodian domestic worker abuse cases in Malaysia have been reported so far. ● The findings have been documented and published by Human Rights Watch and the book was launched in Cambodia

on Nov 1. ● The Cambodian prime minister reportedly demanded Cambodian domestic workers in Malaysia be given at least a day off in a week. The workers should only be required to work eight hours a day. ● B efore t his, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam mooted the possibility of having a language orientation programme for domestic workers in future. ● The International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention No. 189 has outlined global standards for domestic workers, including prohibition of salary deductions to repay recruitment fees. ● In 2015, there will be an integration of labour standards among the 10 Asean member countries

Improve protection for domestic helpers, says Tenaganita THE ban by the Cambodian government on sending domestic workers to Malaysia is a sign that the government here should review its standards and protection for maids, both foreign and local. Tenaganita executive director Dr Irene Fernandez said that with the Cambodian ban, Malaysia

has now faced domestic worker bans from two countries, after a moratorium was imposed by Indonesia two years ago. “It is time to review and hand out standardised contracts to all domestic workers, regardless of which country they come from,” she told The Malay Mail. “The Indonesia moratorium,

in a way, contributed to the massive demand for Cambodian maids but now we can’t do that, we will be hiring maids from Laos or Myanmar, but doing so would represent a ‘retarded’ approach." Fernandez said Tenaganita, which championed the rights of immigrants and workers, along

with the Bar Council, submitted a memorandum to Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam last year with a proposal to standardise such contracts. "We will revive that dialogue soon. We need to have clarity in defining the rights of maids. You can’t say they can have Sunday

off and then also say they can work overtime on Sunday. There needs to be definite measures,” she said. After the Indonesian ban, an estimated 40,000 families in Malaysia were reportedly waiting for maids. T h e re are b out 3 4 , 0 0 0 Cambodian maids here.

CELEBRITY chef Chef Riz (pic) has dodged the bullet after Measat Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd (Astro) said the matter of him overstating his qualification to be on the Masterchef Malaysia show has been resolved. An Astro spokesman said the matter had been resolved between the station and Chef Riz, who is the son of Malaysia's food ambassador Chef Wan. "Astro Ria selected Chef Riz as one of the judges in the reality cooking show based on his experience as a restaurateur, TV host and his personality. Chef Riz sincerely apologises to the viewers for overstating his qualifications and Astro Ria has accepted his explanation in good faith," the spokesman from Astro's communication department told The Malay Mail. Chef Riz, 29, whose real name is Mohd Nadzri Redzuawan, had landed himself in hot soup when he claimed on the show's official website he had a highflying career in Italian celebr it y chef Mario Batali's flagship restaurant Babbo in New York. Batali denied the claim. Chef Riz claimed he was once the "Chef de Cuisine" or head chef there. He had also claimed he had previously worked as a sous chef at the three-star Michelin restaurant Le Bernardin in New York under celebrity French chef Eric Ripert. Following the brouhaha, the Masterchef Malaysia website has since replaced Chef Riz's original claims to "trainee" at both restaurants — a trainee under the head chef in Babbo and under the sous chef in Le Bernardin. Chef Riz's other credits include hosting his own cooking shows Makan Tapi Diet, Jernal Chef and Sajian Kontemporari. Joining the ranks of the Masterchef franchise, Masterchef Malaysia began its first season on Astro Ria on Oct 22. Other countries that have adopted the franchise that originated from the United Kingdom include the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Greece, India, Sweden and Indonesia.

Sources said the bank's closed circuit television (CCTV) camera recorded five of the men breaking the machine free of its anchor from the floor and tying a rope around it. The sixth man used a stool to reach the surveillance camera and turn it away. Along the way, they extracted RM316,000 in cash from the machine that was later found several kilometres from the

scene. Police, however, have leads on the incident and are zeroing in on one of the thieves besides looking at the inside job angle, said City CID chief SAC II Datuk Ku Chin Wah. He said police were checking if the robbers had been involved in a similar theft in the district last year. “The way the theft had taken place showed they must be experts but we have good leads we are working on, which will bring us the culprits.” Police have lifted a set of fingerprints belonging to one of the men who was found to have been involved in a similar heist last year. The thieves used an oxygenpropane cutting torch to break

open the ATM machine to get to the cash inside. Ku said police were puzzled why the bank alarm did not go off. Police only learned about the heist when two officers patrolling Taman Midah about 3.30am on Tuesday saw the bank’s glass door broken into and found one of the eight ATM machines inside missing. Initial investigations suggested the machine was dragged out of the premises as scratch marks were found on the floor. Police later recovered the ATM machine about 11.30am at the MRR2 highway bordering Ulu Kelang, 10km away. Anyone with information on the theft may contact Investigating Officer Amiz at 012-5143005.

Police to probe bribery allegation POLICE will open an investigation paper into the allegation made by murder accused Kher Tian Hock who claimed he had bribed police officers to secure his daring escape from the Tanjung Sepat police station seven years ago. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said a probe would be conducted soon to identify the officers involved. "This is a serious allegation and we will definitely investigate the matter and take action if it is true," he told reporters after a Deepavali open house celebration organised by KL

police headquarters in Cheras yesterday. Kher, facing a murder charge, was sentenced to two years jail by the Telok Datok magistrate's court on Tuesday for escaping from police custody. The 38-year-old unemployed was sentenced by magistrate Hurman Hussain after he pleaded guilty to escaping from the Tanjung Sepat police station on March 13, 2004. At that time, Kher was remanded for the murder of Form Five student See Sheau Fang. He was reported to have climbed out through the toilet window of the Tanjung Sepat

police station. Only his brother Then Heng, 33, was charged with See's murder. After a full trial, Then Heng was freed on Jan 24, 2008, because of lack of evidence. Kher was caught in Masai, Johor, on Oct 5. On Oct 28, he was charged with murdering See, 18, at 44 Jalan Wira 24, Taman Permata Sijangkang in Telok Panglima Garang between 9.30am and 5.30pm on Feb 28, 2004. He was aso charged with escaping from police custody. Hurman fixed Jan 16 for mention in the murder case.

Gang robs two families within half hour TWO families who failed to keep their gates and doors locked were robbed of RM26,000 worth of valuables by the same parang-wielding gang within 35 minutes. This happened on Sunday night at Bandar Parklands and nearby Taman Sri Andalas in Klang. South Klang district deputy police chief Supt Azman Abd Razak said that in the first incident at 10.40pm at Bandar Parklands at Jalan KlangBanting, five men in a silver Toyota Vios parked near a double-storey house. “The men, attired in dark

jackets, ski-masks and gloves and armed with parangs stormed the house as the gate and front door were not locked,” he said. "They gathered the four members of the family into the living room and bound and gagged them." The robbery took five minutes and the gang fled with cash, jewellery and electrical appliances worth RM16,000. Not satisfied with their loot, the gang went to Taman Sri Andalas which is about a 10-minute drive away from

Bandar Parklands. “There, at 11.15pm, the gang found another double-storey house with the gate and front door not locked," said Azman. "Applying the same modus operandi, the parang-wielding gang stormed into the house and rounded up the family members into the living room where they were bound and gagged," They ransacked the place and fled with RM10,000 worth of valuables. Police believe the gang, whose members were described as being in their 20s and 30s, prey on households which neglect to lock their gates and front doors.

Return of the burger blues

MPAJ says twice-demolished problem stall now legit, but warns owner to remove drinks kiosk IT'S back and it's business as usual. SIVA of Taman Permata in Hulu Klang, Ampang, claims a burger stall demolished twice by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) in December 2009 and on Aug 2 last year has reopened. He recently noticed the kiosk operating again at a corner of Jalan Permata 9 at night. "It is the same problem all over again. "Not only do we not get any peace, the place is now attracting customers to park by the road all over again." In July last year, residents complained the influx of customers and their parked cars creating a traffic congestion and posing a hazard to other motorists along the busy road. They claimed the stall, run by a resident living next to it, was creating a nuisance as it opened from 4pm to midnight.

LEGAL: MPAJ is all right with this roadside eatery

Hotline had highlighted residents' complaints on a host of problems caused by two burger stalls and several roadside food outlets in and around the spot several times, the last on Aug 3, in which MPAJ enforcement team had torn it down a day earlier, using crowbars and mallets,

under Section 46(1)(a) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1973. The Hotline Roving Team recently checked the area and found a single stall was operating at night. "We hope the authorities can deal with this problem once and for all," SIVA says.

● AMPANG JAYA MUNICIPAL COUNCIL (MPAJ) public relations officer Norhayati Ahmad says they have investigated the matter after being alerted by Hotline last week. "We found no other new stalls had been set up in the area. However, we wish to highlight the burger stall at the corner of Jalan Permata 9 has recently been approved by MPAJ."

She says the other stalls in the area have long been demolished. Norhayati says most of the complaints from Taman Permata residents are on an awning built as a makeshift garage in front of the operator's home. "He has only been given permission to run one stall, instead of two like he did previously." However, when the Hotline

Roving Team checked the area yesterday, and found the awning still standing and a drinks stall operating from within, Norhayati says the owner has been given a verbal warning on the matter last Friday. She says he has seven days to comply to the council's directive to dismantle the awning and stop the drinks stall activity. "The council will continue to monitor the situation from time to time."

Billed during phone line switch delay NAINA MOHAMED is disappointed with the delay in getting his telephone line transferred despite following up with two service centres. The 39-year-old salesman from Puchong applied to Telekom Malaysia (TM) for his existing line account to be under his new address on Oct 25 last year. "They said they would look into it and also asked me to call TM Help Line 100." After several tries, a customer service officer then asked him to go to a TMpoint one-

stop centre instead. In February this year, TM proceeded to charge NAINA the monthly bills, from October last year to January, amounting to RM484.75, while still waiting for the line transfer. "On Feb 17, I followed up with the TMpoint in Petaling Jaya and requested a rebate on the monthly bills. Again, they said they were still looking into it, and would process the rebate and refund as soon as possible." NAINA then decided to ter-

minate his account due to the inconvenience caused. "They promised to comply and mail me the refund bill after the adjustment. I have not heard from them since." On June 28, he visited the TMpoint in Shah Alam to follow-up and was told he was blacklisted due to the unpaid monthly bills. "I finally decided to pay the entire amount but asked them to refund me as soon as possible, as the consultant said they would proceed with the re-ad-

justment and refund processes. They have not responded till today." ● A SPOKESMAN from Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) apologises to NAINA for the delay. "After a detailed investigation, we found the situation was initially due to the unavailability of sufficient Streamyx ports to serve his new premises at the time. "We have credited a rebate for the unavailable service

London's Trafalgar Square ITALY political and economic tur"As soon as the reforms are "We have to regain credTHOUSANDS of students marched through London yesterday against cuts to university funding, facing off against police armed with rubber bullets amid fears of a repeat of violent protests last year. Police cleared a group of protesters who pitched their tents in the tourist hub of Trafalgar Square, while sticks and bottles were thrown at riot officers in the financial district. Scotland Yard said police had made a number of arrests for public order offences. It said 2,000 protesters were taking part, while the organisers of the demonstration said there were 10,000 people involved. The situation was tense, with police authorised to use plastic baton rounds. Michael Chessum of the National Campaign against Fees and Cuts said: "Some people think the only way to make their point is by doing things beyond the law.

We have students on the way to prevent trouble. But the majority of the violence comes from the police." Scotland Yard said it had deployed 4,000 officers for the protest. The marchers went from the University of London to St Paul's Cathedral in the heart of the financial district, where anti-capitalism protesters inspired by the "Occupy Wall Street" movement have been camping out since midOctober. A group of protesters had earlier broken off from the main rally to set up around 25 tents in historic Trafalgar Square at the foot of Nelson's Column. Police later moved in, hauling protesters out of the green and blue tents which officers then folded up. "This is what democracy looks like," screamed one protester with a trickle of blood running down his forehead, as police led him away in handcuffs. — AFP

31 guilty of religious riot

Life sentences handed down for murder, arson in one of India's worst inter-faith violence AN Indian court yesterday found 31 Hindus guilty of killing 33 Muslims in a single house during religious riots in the state of Gujarat in 2002, provoking a mixed response from activists. In some of India's worst inter-faith violence since independence in 1947, about 2,000 people died in a wave of antiMuslim unrest triggered by a train fire in which Hindu pilgrims were burnt alive. Muslims were blamed for the train fire, and Hindu mobs hungry for revenge rampaged through Muslim neighbourhoods in towns and villages across Gujarat State during three days of bloodshed. "Out of the 73 accused, 31 are guilty and 42 are acquitted of all charges," judge S.C. Srivastava told the special court near Sardarpura village, where the 33 Muslims sought shelter in a small house on the night of Feb 28, 2002. The victims had crowded into the house to escape the rioters,

Life sentences were handed to all 31 men for murder, arson and other charges, following earlier convictions of other Hindu rioters over the outbreak of violence. Russian probe fails to take route for Mars A RUSSIAN probe on a mission to a moon of Mars yesterday failed to find the right course to the red planet, in a potentially devastating blow to Moscow's hopes of resuming planetary exploration. The Phobos-Grunt probe blasted off successfully (pic) from the Baikonur cosmo-

fire has been the subject of fierce dispute between Hindus and Muslims, but in March this year, a court handed 11 death sentences and 20 life terms to Muslims convicted over the blaze. During the slaughter in Gujarat, witnesses said baying Hindu mobs surrounded and raped Muslim women, then poured kerosene down their throats and on their children and threw lit matches at them. The Hindu pilgrims on the train were returning from the town of Ayodhya, another flashpoint for inter-religion unrest after a mosque was razed in 1992 by Hindu zealots, leading to separate riots that killed thousands of people, mostly Muslims. 3,000 Germans in forced marriages MORE than 3,000 women and girls in Germany, most from Muslim families and many of them minors, faced forced marriage in the course of a year, official research released yesterday indicated. The first Federal study of its kind found 3,443 recorded cases in 2008in which people living in Germany were forced to wed or threatened with a forced marriage. Most were between the ages of 18 and 21, although nearly a third of them were under the age of 17. Dating's difficult, say Angels THEY may be a man's fantasy, but Victoria's Secret models say their dating life is anything but heavenly. Candice Swanepoel told website Stylelist that her main problem is finding a guy who will act normal around her, reports the Daily Telegraph. "I think it's harder to date as an Angel. When people meet you, it's hard to look past our job, what we look like," she said. "They are always trying to impress you, you know, like 'come to my mansion blah blah blah'." Another Angel, Erin Heatherton said she doesn't know what dating is like other than as America's most-wanted bombshell. She said she's not looking to settle down. "I had a boyfriend for a long time and I've never really been single as an adult," she said. Still, she can't imagine life as being anything other than a lingerie model and sex symbol. "I wouldn't know what it's like to be any different," she said.

Bleedin’ fishin’ 'Talk to the hand', say

By KARINA FOO karina@mmail.com.my MANY of us live for the weekends simply to have some R&R where we can sit back with a good book, play our favourite sport or go fishing. Oh yes, fishing. The thing you do with a rod, while you sit stationary near the lake and wait for the bait to do its job. But there’s no waiting for the fishies to bite the bait for self-proclaimed Oklahoma (“Okie”) hillbillies, Skipper Bivins and Trent Jackson, as they go out to catch them using the mother of all baits — their bare hands and feet. Animal Planet’s Hillbilly Handfishin’ documents a 12-part series where city dwellers and suburbanites travel to rural Oklahoma for some serious handfishing, or noodling. That’s right, ya’ll! This style of fishing has been a way of life in some Southern cultures for a very long time. Handfishing and noodling are also known as gravelling, grabbling, hogging, dogging, gurgling, tickling and stumping. But noodling is the more common term as it stems from two popular theories: First, a catfish is as slippery as noodles and second, a handfisher’s arm hangs like a noodle after catching a catfish. “The experience might be weird, uncomfortable and just terrifying for some, but once you catch a fish, you can share that awesome story with your friends, because not everyone can do it,” said Bivins, a highly experienced noodler, who caught his first fish with his hands at the age of four and is now a five-time world champion Okie noodler. But don’t think that just because these veteran and rookie noodlers are not catching man-eating piranhas, that it’s all that safe. The catfish itself has its own

the name of fun and a once in a lifetime experience. In fact, you can add it to your Bucket list,” said Bivins. Expect blood, scrapes and cuts as some noodlers believe that “If you ain’t bleeding, you ain’t handfishing!”

It’s hilarious, yet scary when you see your regular corporate worker whose hands are only used to holding their Blackberries, suddenly grapple a slippery and antagonised catfish! Noodlers also have to be cautious and on the lookout for snakes, beavers, muskrats and snapping turtles that take over abandoned catfish holes as homes of their own. And you thought that only the catfish bite was going to hurt! Noodling isn’t like your newest fad or sport as it has been around for hundreds of years as this was the way Native

Story and pix by Loong Wai Ting waiting@mmail.com.my

Since making waves back in 2009, Ginvera’s NuTeen Pimple Care and Oil Control range has been a huge hit with it’s affordable pricing and ample choices of products catered for teenagers with minor skin problems. At a recent showcase to introduce new extensions to the pimple care range, NuTeen also announced two new brand ambassador, Thomas and Jack. Bieber to prove lovechild not his Justin Bieber (pic) will take a DNA test to prove that he did not father a 20-year old fan’s baby — and then will turn the tables on her paternity suit by taking her to court once the results come in, US media reported on Monday. US gossip website TMZ said that the teen singing sensation is presently on tour in Europe, but plans to take the DNA test when he returns to the US to prove that he did not father the infant son born to Mariah Yeater, 20. Yeater made the claim in a paternity suit filed in Los Angeles last week, news reports said. Sources say Bieber, 17, and his team think it’s important to file a lawsuit against Yeater as a deterrent to others who might be tempted to make similar charges in the future. His legal team, which has called Yeater’s paternity claims “malicious,

defamatory and demonstrably false”, has vowed to “vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to defend and protect Justin against these allegations”. Yeater, who gave birth to a baby boy in July, has said that she and Bieber met backstage at a concert in Los Angeles in October of last year, where he propositioned her.

“When I later realised I was pregnant with Justin Bieber’s baby, I tried to contact him through his representatives but no one ever called me back,” she told the court, according to another gossip sheet, The Star. The Canadian-born pop singer told his fans in a tweet last week that he intended to block out the allegations that, although still a kid himself, he had fathered a love-child. “I’m going to ignore the rumors ... and focus on what is real. An opportunity to help by doing what i love. Judge me on the music! Love yall!” he wrote. Bieber currently is in Europe promoting a new Christmas-themed album Under the Mistletoe. On Sunday, he received one of the inaugural MTV Voices awards at the MTV Europe Video Awards in Belfast, in recognition of his work raising millions of dollars for various charities. — AFP

Rain adjusting well to army life Fans wept as he was drafted into the army last month but South Korean pop sensation Rain (pic) is apparently adjusting well to military life. Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-Hoon, will become an assistant instructor next month at the boot camp which he entered in October, the defence ministry said yesterday. “Assistant instructors are chosen based on outstanding training results and their willingness, and Jung has shown that,” a ministry spokesman said. Rain was recently also named top

marksman at the camp. The 29-year-old singer has a huge following across Asia. Many fans, including hundreds from elsewhere in Asia, burst into tears when he entered the camp to start his 22-month mandatory military service. South Korea, which has remained technically at war with North Korea since their 1950 to 1953 conflict, requires all eligible men to serve in the military, although candidates can defer their service. — AFP

sharing session where they were met by screaming teen fans who jostled for autographs and a chance to take pictures with their heartthrobs. "I love the Acne Away Gel. Both of us have a very hectic schedule and pimples start to pop out due to lack of sleep. After trying out the products, especially the Acne and Pimples Away Sleeping Mask, my skin problem has reduced. Even my sister loves it!" Jack said. In conjunction with the upcoming Thomas and Jack Most Wanted Music Showcase, Ginvera NuTeen is giving fans a chance to win tickets to watch them live at the Genting International Convention Centre (GICC) on Nov 19. The contest is open to anyone with a purchase of any NuTeen products RM15 and above in a single receipt. Contest ends on Monday. NuTeen Pimple Care and Oil Control range starts from RM10.90 and is available at all major pharmacies throughout Malaysia.

‘Puss in Boots’ has purrfect weekend at US box office Animated kids’ romp Puss in Boots was purring plenty after pulling in US$33 million (RM102.6 million) and holding onto the top spot at the North American box office at the weekend, industry data showed on Monday. With the voice work of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis and Billy Bob Thornton, the flick took in US$33.04 million in three days adding up to a total take of US$75.5 million to date, monitor Exhibitor Relations reported.

Tower Heist, with an all-star cast led by Eddie Murphy, had a strong opening in the number two spot with a US$25.08 million take in three days. It was trailed by another solid premiere: A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas. The comedy sequel brought in US$13.06 million on its first weekend out. It knocked Paranormal Activity 3 down to the number four spot with an US$8.5 million take, and now an impressive US$95.3 million overall haul. Futuristic thriller In Time starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried edged down to fifth place, earning US$7.7 million in ticket sales between Friday and Sunday. A remake of the hit 1980s dance romp Footloose slipped to the sixth spot, with a haul of US$4.55 million, putting it ahead of the boxing robots of Real Steelin seventh, with the Disney hit for children starring Hugh Jackman taking in US$3.4 million. The Rum Diary, starring Johnny Depp as a journalist facing an ethical conundrum in Puerto Rico, trailed in eighth place with US$2.99 million. Political thriller The Ides of March, starring George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, earned US$2.0 million in ninth place. It was just ahead of Moneyball, a sports drama starring Brad Pitt as a baseball coach in the 10th spot, taking in US$1.9 million. — AFP

PETALING JAYA: SPORTCHECK

Change is imminent NSC to undergo amendment for sake of relevance

By Haresh Deol haresh@mmail.com.my

THE National Sports Council (NSC) Act 1971 will undergo several amendments to ensure it remains relevant to the national sports scene. Deputy Sports Minister Gan Ping Sieu added various factors were taken into consideration, including the report compiled by the University of Sterling on the role of National Sports Association (NSAs) in developing the national sports industry. "We will look into revamping t he NSC. Even t he National Sports Institute's bill was passed in Parliament recently allowing them to work independently," said Ping Sieu.

Captain leads by example

By VIJHAY VICK vijhayvick@mmail.com.my

SKIPPER Muhammad Noor Faeez Ibrahim (pic) is happy to be the catalyst in Malaysia’s last two Sultan of Johor Cup matches. He had told his teammates to keep their heads high and have the confidence to achieve a top two finish in the youth tournament. Fittingly, the Project 2013 captain started the proceedings in both of Malaysia’s last matches. "Of course I'm happy to score the opening goals but credit must go to everyone in the team. Everyone wanted to prove that we are not pushovers," said Faeez. "Now we have to keep composed and win our game against India on Friday." Against the much fancied Koreans, Faeez converted a penalty corner in the 3rd minute. This set the proceedings for a 4-2 win to end Korea's hundred per cent record. Yesterday, it was Faeez who gave Malaysia the lead as well — again via a penalty corner in the 12th minute. Malaysia won 2-1. Amir Farid Fuzi scored the other

Developing The Malaysian Sport Industry; Developing the capacity of NSAs, com-

piled by Prof Leigh Robinson and Brian Minikin, is an analysis on NSAs carried out using the Readiness Assessment Tool. This was highlighted in From the Sidelines column First class joke published yesterday. The report indicated NSC interferes with the management of NSAs in the country, adding; "…in some cases, it has been reported the NSCfunded administrative officer reports primarily back to NSC rather than the board of governors of the NSA. "If this is the case, it undermines the governance and management of an NSA and will inhibit development of the organisation... A significant number of NSAs reported their operational

procedures were directed either by a strong president who determined how everything was to be done or that this was imposed upon them by NSC and tied to funding". Peng Sieu was met during the launch of the "YBs Can Jump" 3-on-3 basketball competition at Maba Stadium yesterday. Also present were Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Ab du l l a h , Um no yout h chief Khair y Jamaluddin and Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan. The tournament, which went viral on Twitter, will see the participation of 32 teams. It will be held at Berjaya Times Square on Nov 19.

but Pakistan were resistant and did not give us much space. "Thankfully we managed to get three points. This keeps us in the running for a place in the final," added the 20-year-old. This win puts Malaysia in a good position to qualify for the final. Australia had already booked their place after coming from behind to defeat Korea. The Koreans almost staged a walkout during the match after being upset by the umpire's decision to award a penalty corner against them. Only the intervention of coach Song Seung Tae prevented the walkout.

Malaysia back in the gold hunt IZZAQ FARIS RAMLAN'S late strike saw Malaysia walk out 2-1 winners against Sea Games favourite Thailand at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium yesterday. The win will not only help restore the confidence of the players who had lost two valuable points in their opening match against Singapore after a goalless draw on Monday, but will also provide the right tonic before facing the home team on Nov 17 after meeting Cambodia on Nov 13. years ago, however, had to wait until the 25th minute for the "Midas touch" of skipper Baddrol Bakhtiar. Baddrol, who received a beautiful pass from leftback Asraruddin Putra Omar, beat Thailand goalkeeper Ukrit Wongmeema for the opening goal but credit must go to goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat for stopping numerous goal worthy attempts from the Thais, especially skipper Ronnachai Rangsiyo. Stunned by the goal, Thailand increased their presence in the Malaysian

half and managed to find the equaliser through substitute Natarid Thammroddodpon's strike in the 76th minute. Sensing a need for more bite upfront, coach Ong K i m Sw e e d e c i d e d t o throw his ace in the pack, Izzaq Faris, to replace Wan Zaharulnizam in the 80 minute and the move immediately paid dividends. F o u r m i n u t e s l a t e r, Izzaq struck an unstoppable shot that not only beat the Thailand goalkeeper but ensured all three points for the Malaysian squad. — Bernama

PARIS: TENNIS

Djokovic, Murray fighting fit at Paris Masters TOP SEEDS Novak Djokovic and Andy Mur ray b ot h shrugged off injury concerns to sweep into the third round of the Paris Masters at Bercy Arena here yesterday. Djokovic's participation in the year's penultimate event, which he won in 2009, had been cast into doubt by the recurrence of a shoulder injury, but he had too much for Croatian Ivan Dodig in a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The world No 1 su c cumbed to only his fourth defeat of the season against Kei Nishikori at last week's Swiss Indoors and he showed signs of rustiness in the first set here, double-faulting twice and producing 10 unforced errors. A sublime behind-theback forehand early in the second set proved he was finding his rhythm, however, and he closed out victory to set up an encounter with 15t h-s e e de d comp at r iot Viktor Troicki. Second seed Murray had to withdraw from the Swiss Indo ors wit h a butto ck muscle strain but he showed no ill-effects in a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of France's Jeremy Chardy. The world No 3, who won three consecutive tournaments in Asia last month and is on a 17-match unbeaten streak, now finds his route to the quarterfinals barred by No 13 seed Andy Roddick. Murray has a 7-3 career record against the American, and prevailed in straight sets when they met on the grass in the semifinals at Queen's Club in June this year. Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer took his place in the third round with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. Ferrer, who has already booked a berth at the WTA Tou r F i n a l s i n L on d on later this month, will face Ukrainian 14th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov for a place in the last eight. Serbian 11th seed Janko Tipsarevic stormed into round three by thrashing American Alex Bogomolov Jr 6-1, 6-0 to set up a clash with Czech fifth seed Tomas Berdych. — AFP

Revitalised Woods back in the hunt in Australia TIGER WOODS (pic) is convinced he is finally in position to begin his rise to the top of world golf again but he will have to beat a world class field at the Australian Open this week if he is to end his twoyear title drought. With the Presidents Cup following next week in Melbourne, the 107-year-old tournament has attracted one of its strongest fields, including eight of the world's top 20, to compete for the modest US$1.5 million (RM4.7m) purse at the Lakes Golf Course. Fourteen-time Major winner Woods is languishing at No 58 in the world after two years of personal problems and injuries but the American remains the major draw card on his return to the country where he registered his last victory at the 2009 Australian Masters. The 35-year-old arrived in Australia amid a media frenzy caused by a racist remark made by his former caddie Steve Williams and, having met

it might take some time. "If you're Usain Bolt you don't just go out and run in world record time, it takes time, it takes training," he said, referring to the Jamaican Olympic sprint champion. "Finally I'm able to do (that) and that's what's so exciting about these tournaments coming up as well as going into next year, I finally feel like I'm able to do that. "I'm here to try to get a W, just like I am at every event," he added. "But I have some work to do before that happens. I'll take a look at the golf course, figure it out, figure out the game plan and then execute my game plan." Woods will come up against one of the local favourites for the first time in tomorrow's opening round, having been grouped with two Australians — world No 7 Jason Day and twice former champion Robert Allenby. Day, who finished runnerup at the US Masters and US

and received an apology from the New Zealander yesterday, hopes a line has been drawn under the incident. That will leave the former world No 1 clear to continue plotting the course he hopes will take him back to the top of the game he dominated for so long. Finally fully recovered from the Achilles and knee injuries that have restricted both his ability to practise and his tournament time, Woods said he "absolutely" believed he could dominate golf again — even if

Open this year and has been tipped as a future No 1 by Australian great Greg Norman, said winning his home open was "very important". "I have watched it ever since I was a kid," the 23-year-old said. "I have always wanted to win it. I want to win Majors and PGA Tour events but I obviously want to put my name on the Australian Open trophy. "That has been a very big goal for me, ever since I was a little kid." Adam Scott (world No 8) won the title in 2009 and is another strong Australian contender, while the American charge is expected to come from big-hitting Dustin Johnson (five), Matt Kuchar (nine), Nick Watney (12) and Bubba Watson (17). Although the Americans lack the special motivation to win on home soil, there is a cache to claiming a title that the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson and

Gary Player have held in the past. "Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer have said to be a truly great player you've got to travel the world and win everywhere," said Watney. "It would definitely be a huge feather in my cap to play well here. I have come a long way so I would like to make it worthwhile." There will, however, be something of a culture shock for some of the Americans who rarely stray from the USPGA circuit to play abroad. "You are learning different grasses, different winds, you learn that the air is a little bit thicker in the wind here," said Watson. "When the ball is into the wind it goes a lot shorter. It is totally different to what we are used to. It is a learning experience. We want to learn. We want to go to different places and learn golf courses and see how our game travels. It is fun unless you play really bad." — Reuters

Ecclestone takes stand in bribery case FORMULA 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone took the stand in Munich yesterday as the star witness in the trial of a German former banker accused of receiving bribes from the motorsport chief. The testimony f rom Ecclestone, Formula 1's commercial rights holder who has run the sport for nearly 40 years, was keenly awaited in the trial of Gerhard Gribkowsky, who is accused of corruption, tax evasion and embezzlement. The German is alleged to have received bribes worth millions from Britain's Ecclestone between 2006 and 2007 over the sale of the Formula 1 rights to CVC, the investment firm which owns most of the multibillion dollar sport. The sale was crucial to Ecclestone as the British private investor fund wanted to retain him as the head of the sport. The 81-year-old Ecclestone faces no charges and denies having bribed Gribkowsky, 53, to make sure that Formula 1 was sold to CVC. Yesterday, the Briton told the court he had paid Gribkowsky because he had little alternative, indicating the German had

threatened him. "He wanted some money to start his own business," said Ecclestone. "My thought was, maybe I can keep him quiet, maybe I can keep him peaceful." In 2006, Gribkowsky was the chief risk officer for BayernLB, one of Germany's biggest banks, which had acquired the rights to Formula 1 in 2002. Prosecutors allege Gribkowsky wanted to start a new life as a motorsport executive and possibly even succeed Ecclestone as the sport's controller. They claim the financial arrangements between the two men caused damages to the bank worth US$66.5 million. Gribkowsky's defence has said the German acted within his rights and had been the victim of a "witch hunt" by investigators, perhaps envious of his wealth. Although Gribkowsky had received a large sum of money for his services, it was appropriate in the small world of Formula 1, according to his defence. The banker has been held in custody since January and his assets have been frozen. — AFP

Fabio Capello will miss his son's wedding in order to oversee England's friendly international with Spain — AFP

Unique and deadly LONDON: FOOTBALL/ INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY

...but it's not easy to emulate Spain's playing style

FRIENDLY RIVALRY: Reina (left) and Valdes need to be at their best to earn the No 1 spot — FILE photo

LIVERPOOL goalkeeper Pepe Reina says other countries trying to replicate the recent success of Spanish football will find it is not easy copying their system. Spain are the current holders of both the World Cup and European Championship. Barcelona, the majority of whose squad are Spain internationals, have won the Champions League three times in six years and twice in the last three seasons. The Catalans' football, which heavily influences the way Spain play with Xavi and Andres Iniesta at the heart of both, is envied throughout the world. However, Reina said there were specific reasons why Spain play like they do. "We have found a great generation of players the same age," said the 29-yearold, who has been named in the squad to face England in a friendly at Wembley on Sunday (1.15am). "These players know how to win because they have won already in their club divisions.

It is not always possible to play our way. It depends on the player and the team and depends on the philosophy you have. "But not everyone can play as we do because no one has the quality of players we have." Reina has followed in his father's footsteps in terms of becoming a world class goalkeeper. His father, Miguel, played for Barca and Atletico Madrid in the 1960s and 1970s. Last week, Miguel saw his Barca record for the most minutes without conceding a goal broken by current goalkeeper Victor Valdes. Valdes is a member of Spain's top trio of goalkeepers, along with Reina and long-time No 1 Iker Casillas of Real Madrid. The form of the Real captain has meant Reina has been limited to just 23 appearances for Spain since making his debut in August 2005. He will be hoping to get a game against England at the weekend in the country

where he has established his reputation as one of the best in the world. But rather than be beaten by the frustration of seeing his international career limited by the established competition, the former Barca and Spain youth team player takes great pride in his country's achievements. "Any time you go with the national team you want to win, and every time you play England it is a special game," said Reina, who played one match in Spain's triumph at Euro 2008 but did not get on the field for the World Cup in South Africa two years later. "The international team have 23 very important players for our clubs but only 11 can start. So we have to take that role when it comes along if you are lucky enough to be there. "In my particular case it has been an absolute pleasure. We are the champions of Europe and the world. To be world champions with my national team is a dream come true and the target of any footballer."

DUBLIN: FOOTBALL/ EURO 2012 playoffs

Time for Irish celebration, says Kelly

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND rightback Stephen Kelly is desperate not to add another hard luck story to their catalogue of playoff heartaches. Six times previously, the Irish have headed into the dramatic showdowns with high hopes, and on only one occasion to date — against Iran 10 years ago — have they emerged victorious. But it is the injustice of their demise at the hands of France and Thierry Henry in particular during the last World Cup campaign which is fuelling their mission this time around. Henry's infamous handball robbed Giovanni Trapattoni's men of a trip to South Africa, and erasing those bitter memories will be the No 1 priority when they run out against Estonia in Tallinn on Saturday (3.45am) with a place at the Euro 2012 finals at stake. When asked how keen he is to be able to put that history of heroic failure behind him, Kelly said: "Desperate.

NO MORE HEARTACHES: Kelly (left) in action during the Euro 2012 Group B qualifying round match on Sept 6 — AFP photo

Obviously, the freshest in the memory is still France and everybody has got that scar, that wound still there. "It's something that if we qualify now, hopefully that will be papered over and that will be it, we can forget about it and it will be all done. It's fresh in our minds and we are all keen to not let something like that happen again." Fulham defender Kelly, 28, grew up in Ireland as the Jack Charlton era reached its peak, and remembers with fondness how the nation

came to a standstill during the 1994 World Cup finals in America with Ray Houghton's goal sinking the mighty Italy to write a fresh chapter in Irish football folklore. "Just to think back at that, it makes you smile and think about how close we are to possibly being at a stage like that again where we could really give the country a boost, which would be a fantastic thing to do," said Kelly. "As a kid, you always supported Ireland. I always sup-

ported teams in the Premier League, but Ireland were the team you watched and you cared about the most. "Growing up playing football, your dream is to play for Ireland and play in a major tournament. We are very close to it now and if it comes through, it will be a dream come true for me and I am sure everybody else in the team. It would be a special thing. "I know the way all of us feel about playing for our country and playing for Ireland, so it would be a fantastic achievement." The Irish head into the tie in fine form and boasting an unbeaten run of nine games during which they have conceded only one goal, and that in their final qualifier, a 2-1 home victory over Armenia. That gives them immense confidence as they prepare to face a side who lost 2-0 to Faroe Islands during the campaign, although the Group B runners-up know their Group C counterparts

will have ideas of their own. "They have obviously done extremely well to get here and they are obviously a good side, so we can't take anything for granted going into this game. But we are confident at the moment," said Kelly.

Daunting task for England, even at Wembley ENGL AND coach Fabio Capello (pic) admits he fears the worst against Spain, who he describes as the best team in the world. World and European champions Spain play England in a friendly at Wembley on Sunday (1.15am) as both sides continue their plans for next summer's Euro 2012 finals. Capello will be missing a number of his key personnel as he looks to experiment with his squad and he concedes the Three Lions face a daunting task against Spain. "We're playing Spain without any players! We're missing (Wayne) Rooney, (Steven) Gerrard, (John) Terry. We will do the best we can," Capello told Marca. "Playing Spain at Wembley is a tough test. I'm going to give a run out to new and young players to see their potential. We're going to be under lots of pressure from our fans. Spain are the best team in the world. It's an important friendly." Capello admits England would not be able to copy Spain's passing style and he singled out former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas as one of Spain's biggest dangers at Wembley. "Everyone is talking about the Spanish style, the Barca style to be specific," said the Italian. "It's a style that only those players can do. It's not a passing style that bores you because at any moment they can create something that kills the game for you. "Everyone says, we're going to try and play in this style. But you have to play in the way of the players you have got. It is the most spectacular team in world football. "They are all great quality. For example, you have Fabregas, who can move like fish in water between the lines. He's a player who is scoring goals in all matches. Then Andres Iniesta and Xavi. "Also David Villa, who scores goals but also runs, presses, helps at the back. He has improved a lot since joining Barcelona."

Catalan's latest talent Deulofeu is no Messi BARCELONA sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta says attacker Gerard Deulofeu is not at the same level as Lionel Messi yet and has to improve his decision making. The 17-year-old Deulofeu is considered to be the biggest talent to have come through the ranks of the Barca youth academy since Messi and made his Primera Liga debut in the 5-0 win over Mallorca in October. Deulofeu has been tipped for stardom by several greats in the football world, but Zubizarreta has refused to get carried away. "We have to teach him to make the best decision. He can't go out and try to take on three opponents at once like Messi," Zubizarreta told Sport. "He has yet to learn when is the right moment to go for the individual action and when to keep it simple and just pass the ball. He also needs to improve defensively, but he's working very hard to become a better player." Deulofeu is under contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2014. Meanwhile, Barca manager Josep "Pep" Guardiola support-

ed his club president Sandro Rosell's view of downsizing the league from 20 to 16 teams as he reasoned that it would provide a more challenging title race. "It will be a much more competitive league with 16 compared to 20 clubs," said Guardiola. "But I don't know (how it would work). I think to win the titles, to win the games, is always difficult. I understand the game and I understand the sport in that way. Nothing is simple." Guardiola also said the decrease in club numbers would not only create a more competitive league, but would also give players more time to recover. "You will have more time to rest, but I think that would increase the number of international friendly games. The people demand to see the games." While Guardiola believes the reduction should include the removal of four teams from Primera Liga, president Rosell believes the reduction should first be sized down to 18 clubs, and then 16 at a later stage. Barca's next league game is at Real Zaragoza on Nov 19 after the international break.

emerged champions in the Copa America earlier this year, the former River Plate and Udinese star believes his team has a great chance to cause an upset. "We can break history, just as we did during the previous qualifying campaign and if we continue playing like we have been," insisted Sanchez. Sanchez, 22, is certainly an asset to Chile and his presence should give the

Uruguayan defence some anxious moments. After all, he has already scored 14 goals for the Chileans from 43 matches. The other strikers in the Chilean squad are veteran Humberto Suazo who plays for Mexican club Monterrey, Esteban Paredes of Colo Colo, and Universidad de Chile's Eduardo Vargas and Gustavo Canales. Tevez could be in more trouble for going AWOL

TROUBLED striker Carlos Tevez could face more disciplinary action from Manchester City after returning to Argentina without permission from the club. The wantaway star flew out to his homeland on Tuesday after choosing not to contest a fine of two weeks' wages given to him by City for misconduct during the Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich on Sept 27. Tevez, 27, was accused by manager Roberto Mancini of refusing to come on as a substitute during the second-half of the 2-0 defeat at Allianz Arena, but Tevez denied the allegation and blamed a misunderstanding, insisting he had merely refused to warm up – something he felt unnecessary as he had already done so. City had wanted to fine Tevez four weeks' wages for the incident, but the punishment was reduced to two weeks' after the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) refused to ratify the preliminary decision. He was also suspended for two weeks — although that was deemed to have already

We've said all along that Carlos is aware of situation in terms of getting back to his fitness. I can't really say much more until he's back in the country — Paul McCarthy been served while the incident was being investigated — and given a written warning as to his future conduct. He was expected to report to City's Carrington base for training yesterday and his failure to do so could leave him facing more punishment. "He's gone to see his family. They flew back when he flew back, when he was suspended by Manchester City, and he's gone back to see them," Tevez's PR advisor Paul McCarthy told Sky Sports. "We've said all along that

Carlos is aware of situation in terms of getting back to his fitness. I can't really say much more until he's back in the country." Tevez had been expected to appeal the fine but McCarthy said: "We felt it was time to draw a line. "The initial fine that Manchester City wanted to impose was four weeks. They were advised by the PFA that that wasn't going to be sanctioned. "Basically we just felt that Carlos had always admitted that he'd failed to resume warming up, not that he'd failed to enter the field of play. That was underlined by the PFA's judgement. And we just felt that it was time to draw a line under it and try to move on." Tevez, also known as "Apache", has twice requested a transfer in the past year and, despite his decision to accept his fine and suspension, it is unlikely he has any future at City beyond the January transfer window. Mancini said he would welcome Tevez back into the first team if he apologised for his actions, but McCarthy confirmed that is yet to happen.

MANCHESTER UNITED officials have been left red faced after an error was made when the "S" on the new Sir Alex Ferguson tribute stand was installed upside down. Bosses at the Manchester club surprised Ferguson with the renamed north stand on the weekend when the United manager was being honoured for being in charge of the team for 25 years. But it seems Fergie's employers weren't paying attention when the letters for the new stand were being installed, which has led to the "S" in "Ferguson" being placed upside down. The error was spotted by eagle-eyed signmaker Stewart Neill, who said: "The tail of the 'S' is smaller at the bottom, that should be at the top."

Real or Arsenal for France's M'vila FRENCH defensive midfielder Yann M'Vila will join Arsenal or Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. This is the view of M'Vila's Rennes teammate Kader Mangane, who says that his friend has "extraordinary abilities" destined to take him to a top European club. "He might go to England but he also likes the Spanish league. I don't think he will leave in January but I think he will join Real Madrid or Arsenal next summer," the Senegalese international told Goal.com. "The top clubs are right to scout him as I see him with a big career in front of him. Yann has the potential to be one of the biggest players in the world."

NSC out to protect ‘intellectual property’ THE National Sports Council (NSC) have served a writ of summons to sports apparel company Mesuma Sports Sdn Bhd over the ownership of the national jersey tiger stripe design. Mesuma owner Maya Heng confirmed having received the summons adding “her lawyers are handling the matter”. NSC also published advertorials in several dailies yesterday claiming rights over the three-striped tiger design. The Paper That Cares through its article, National jersey bungle on May 13, revealed Telekom Malaysia’s (TM) deal with NSC and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) in designing and selling the Team Malaysia Panthera jerseys courted controversy due to the ownership of rights. This was confirmed by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (IPCM) that responded in a statement saying Mesuma have been registered proprietor of the trademark for the “three tiger stripes” for 10 years (July 9,

2009 to July 9, 2019). The certificates of registration were issued on Feb 19 this year. Checks with IPCM later revealed CR Sports Sdn Bhd filed six applications on May 3 — five days after the Team Malaysia Panthera jersey was launched — to register the design that has been trademarked by Mesuma. The name “Panthera” too is in contention as it stems from the name “Panther” registered by Secaicho Corporation Japan on Aug 30, 1977. TM, CR Sports and NSC did not apply to register the name “Panthera”. OCM admitted having overlooked the contract saying they had a “sponsorship agreement in mind and not a merchandising agreement”. The role of CR Sports in this episode remains unclear. NSC, however, had in a statement to The Malay Mail published on May 24 said: “The NSC have undertaken steps to protect the govern-

ment’s intellectual property and have duly registered with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (IPCM) in the correct classification of the Industrial Design Act 1996”. Mesuma remain as the official attire for the Olympic Council of Malaysia and supplied their apparels to the national contingent for the ongoing 26th Sea Games in Indonesia and for the London Olympics next year. In 2005, the Sports Ministry ran a contest to design the national jersey in which the designs of the top three winning entries were selected. They were later redesigned by Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing to give it a national theme. The jersey, which was launched by then deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, bore five tiger stripes. Having been the official attire distributor for the Olympic Council of Malaysia since 2006, Mesuma decided to make the jersey sponsor friendly and reduced the design to three tiger stripes.

LONDON: FOOTBALL

British PM asks Fifa to reconsider poppy ban BRITISH Prime Minister David Cameron has asked Fifa to reconsider their “outrageous” ban on British teams wearing embroidered poppies on their shirts to mark Remembrance Day in friendlies this week. World football’s governing body has rebuffed requests from the British government to allow England and Wales to wear the poppy, but will allow them to wear black armbands and observe periods of silence instead. England take on world champions Spain at Wembley, while Wales play Norway in Cardiff, on Saturday. Scotland are

playing a friendly in Cyprus on Friday. In a statement issued from his office yesterday, Cameron said: “This seems outrageous. The idea that wearing a poppy to remember those who have given their lives for our freedom is a political act is absurd. “Wearing a poppy is an act of huge respect and national pride. I hope Fifa will reconsider.” The British Government, backed by the English FA, asked Fifa for permission to wear the poppies, which are worn as a symbol for remembering members of the armed forces who died in

the line of duty. Remembrance Day falls on Nov 11, the anniversary of the day the Armistice was signed marking the end of the First World War in 1918. However, Fifa rejected the appeal in a letter to the FA. “We regret to inform you that accepting such initiatives would open the door to similar initiatives from all over the world, jeopardising the neutrality of football,” Fifa wrote. “Therefore, we confirm herewith that the suggested embroidery on the match shirt cannot be authorised.

“There are a variety of options where the FA can continue supporting the cause of Remembrance. One of them already was approved by Fifa, the Period of Silence.” Fifa have allowed a minute’s silence to be held before the games and for the teams to wear poppies on their training kits. Fifa’s rules prevent items of a political nature being worn on shirts and although it does not regard poppies as political, Fifa are concerned it would open the door to countries wanting to wear various different emblems on their shirts. — Reuters
