Last but not least, I had the urge to write a book and decided to create a 400-plus page cruising guide to fill a real need for boaters in that area. “Cruising Guide to New York Waterways and Lake Champlain” took four years to complete. My tireless promotion — including a booth at the N.Y. Boat Show in Manhattan’s Javits Center — secured it as the #2 cruising guide in North America on Amazon that year. I now live in Annapolis, Md. where I write monthly articles on classic boating for PropTalk magazine, a popular Chesapeake Bay publication with a circulation of about 37,000 folks. I have two children and two grandchildren, all in Southern California. One boy and one girl in each generation.

1971 Robert M. Hartmann (201) 848-9111 almtyrob@aol.com Ala Viva ’71: My biannual request to the Class of 1971 for updates and news went pretty much ignored. I assure you that I will not be discouraged and will continue to contact all of you periodically. I will also keep reminding you that our 50th Reunion is STILL scheduled for May 28-30, 2021. Please mark your busy calendars and plan to attend. As promised, I gave myself a new hip for my 66th birthday in September. I don’t know why I waited so long to do it. I have been pain-free from the first day post-surgery and was up and walking one mile per day with a cane on day number two. I highly recommend Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. After six months, I am not even aware that I had surgery except for the scarring. Young, reliable Billy Almond checked in to report that his firm has been working on an awardwinning sea level rise resiliency study in Tidewater, Va. He competed in the East Coast Surfing Championship and unfortunately finished second, but only by a fraction. He and Molly have been doing quite a bit of traveling. The highlight trip was a cruise from Los Angeles to Miami via the Panama Canal. He has received some occasional insanity in his email inbox from Howie Stein, Mi Mi Mintzer (David Mintzer), Dooouglas Bryant (Douglas Bryant), Clarkbar (Robert Clark), Antonio Lopez, Brigger (Charles Briggs) and Artie Williams. (Billy’s name terms, not mine). He wants to remind ALL of his classmates to plan on attending our 50th.

Heidi Keller Hutchison has officially “sort of” committed to attend our 50th. She and her husband, Tom, reside in Durham, N.H. She enjoys living close to the beach and spoiling her grandchildren. Heidi considers herself a semi-retired teacher. Guess the apple didn’t fall too far from the Peddie faculty tree. Bob Dunne, who was always such a party animal, spent New Year’s Eve in the UVA Hospital recovering from the removal of an aneurysm from his liver. It was an eight and onehalf hour procedure, but all went well and he is well on his way to a full recovery. I didn’t get any 50th commitment from him. Gary Niels is still president at The Neighborhood Academy in Pittsburgh. He says he is not too sure if he is totally in love with the gig, but he is there for now. He recently adopted a five-year-old rescue Saint Bernard named Jack. I know Coach Von would be very proud of Gary’s choice in dogs. I have heard via Facebook from Richard Sachs, John Lord, Walter Tramontin, Richard Von Der Porten, Mark Greenberg, Leslie Knox, David Wormser, and Mark Caster. Everyone seems to be quite busy and doing fine. I am always available for updates and notes at Almtyrob@aol.com. I await your emails with bated breath. Your loyal Class of ’71 secretary.
