Women playing hard for the love of the game

W

hoever said “it’s a man’s world” never met Julia Long, Laura Cantu or any of their Houston Energy teammates.

These ladies left their pompoms at home, grabbed a helmet and became a part of the first all-female tackle football team in Texas.

Moms, teachers, nurses, engineers and former beauty pageant contestants by day, these women play hard for the love of the game.

“These women are ordinary women who compete for the love of the game of football and the absolute joy

of competing to be crowned champion,” Long, who plays defensive tackle, said. “They work and have jobs, take care of families all the while pursuing a dream of competing. Not an easy task, but so worth it.”

Unlike their male counterparts, these ladies do not receive compensation for playing time, so in addition to rigorous practices and tough games, they must also find a way to make ends meet.

For example, Cantu currently is a student at Texas Southern University majoring in Sports Management with pearland

a minor in Marketing. She also works for Pearland ISD during the school year as a substitute teacher and for the Houston Rockets Laura Cantu during the season as # 4, QB an inside sales representative and marketing associate.

But, Cantu wouldn’t trade it for a second. In fact, she encourages girls to work hard for what they want in life.

“I would tell young girls to follow their dream no matter what others

think or say,” Cantu said. “Work hard for the things you want to accomplish and stay focused.”

To join the team, women go through try-outs in the fall and players are recruited mostly through word of mouth.

“Most of the players know somebody who knows somebody who may want to give it a chance,” Head Coach Brian Wiggins said.

Most players, like Cantu, share a love for the game as well as all sports.

“I have played sports all my life and when I graduated high school I wanted to continue doing something, so I chose football,” Cantu said. “I grew up around it and always wished to play. I tried out for the team and loved it. They used to practice out at the Dad’s Club [in Pearland], and I would go out there to watch them when I had free time.

I knew that I was going to do what I needed to so I could be part of the team when I turned 18.”

Long, a self-proclaimed “tomboy” and mother of three, also enjoys the camaraderie the game offers.

“The idea of just competing and meeting a diverse group of ladies who share the same dream is my favorite part,” Long said.

The team plays other football squads from across the United States including the Chicago Force, the Kansas City Tribe and the neighboring Dallas Diamonds.

With so many teams popping up around the nation, women’s football is becoming more accepted.

“It’s not what most probably think. We don’t get paid to play so everyone out there plays with heart,” Cantu, the team’s quarterback said. “We are women but we love the game of football and we play a very intense game every time we step foot on the field.”

Intense is right. Houston Energy, which plays at Pearland High School’s stadium, is part of the Independent Women’s Football League – one of the world’s only full tackle women’s football league. “[When I tell people I play foot-

ball, they ask,] ‘Are you serious? Is it flag or real tackle football?’” said Long. “I always say, ‘no powder puff here; we go hard.’”

In fact, according to Wiggins, the only difference between women’s and men’s football is that men are “bigger.”

Cantu, a 2003 graduate of Pearland High School, has played football for eight years and is no stranger to injury.

“I’ve been hurt plenty of times,” she shared. “I’ve had two knee surgeries for a torn meniscus. I’ve also had a few concussions.”

But, as Cantu says, it’s all a part of the game she and her teammates love. www.pearland

“It’s inspiring, because we play for the pure love of the game,” Long added. “No glitz and glam here. There are exceptional athletes playing women’s football. Some of the men in football should take notes.”

Wiggins agrees.

“Houston Energy is a bunch of dedicated ladies that come from many different walks of life for their love of football,” Wiggins said. “These ladies truly play for the love of the game.”

However, as with anything traditionally male-dominated, women’s football does have its critics.

“Sometimes people don’t believe me that I play football. Some women are like, your absolutely crazy and question why I play,” Cantu said.

“Some people are also against it cause they don’t feel women should be playing a sport that was created for men.”

Despite the criticism, there is no doubt that these female athletes empower women and serve as role models for young girls in the Greater Houston community.

“I think [Houston Energy] brings the idea that women are doing something different,” Long said.

“They are looking for something different and trying to be a positive and motivating force to all women. Do something you love to do, despite what people say or how they feel about you playing. Be empowered and give it your all.”

Cantu adds, “My favorite part

about playing is being a role model for other women or young girls that have the same dream we have, which is to play football.”

Fan or not, though, Wiggins encourages everyone to “put away any preconceived ideas and come check them out.”

“No matter who I come across, I still tell them to at least come watch one game before they make their decision about what they think about women’s football,” Cantu said. “We bring a family-oriented team that will put on a great show and make your time spent well worth it. We do as much as we can to make your experience the best we can.”

Developing healthy habits should top back-to-school list

T

rendy new clothes and stylish school supplies are on the back-to-school list, but what about helping children develop healthy lifestyles? Proper nutrition and daily exercise should top the list because they determine lifelong physical and emotional wellbeing and form the foundation of academic success.

Registered Dietitian Sonny Gornek of Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital said parents should model good nutrition and make healthy eating fun. “Prepare the food together. Make funny faces with it and always eat breakfast because it provides focus and energy.”

Numerous research studies have shown that children who regularly eat breakfast score higher on standardized tests and have fewer behavioral problems, including hyperactivity, than children who do not.

Among Gornek’s recommendations for quick and healthy breakfasts: low-sugar yogurt with a piece of fruit, a slice of whole wheat toast with a tablespoon of peanut butter, or a hard-boiled egg with a banana.

“Just a small amount of complex carbohydrates and lean protein will help fuel the body,” said Gornek.

Avoid high-sugar cereals and simple carbohydrates like pancakes and biscuits because they provide a burst of energy followed by sluggishness and a desire for more sugar. To maintain a steady supply of energy, it is better to eat complex carbohydrates like whole grains,

fruits and vegetables. Consume sugar in moderation.

If children say breakfast makes them nauseous, Gornek suggests starting with small portions and providing rewards if necessary.

Optimally, metabolism changes should cause them to wake up hungry after a few weeks.

Eating breakfast also helps maintain a healthy body weight, as does daily exercise.

Child Life Specialist Julie McCarthy of Memorial Hermann Southeast suggests replacing screen time with fun time. “Instead of allowing children to watch TV or play video games as a reward for completing their homework, encourage them to go outside and play catch, hopscotch or jump rope.”

If there is no daylight, McCarthy suggests adapting outdoor activities to work indoors and engaging in video exercise games like boxing or dancing.

“Play is the key,” she said. “Make it fun to get up and play. The whole family can enjoy activities like hiking, biking, dancing, basketball, swimming and roller-skating.”

On the weekends, McCarthy advocates activities where walking is a fun component, like outings to the zoo, parks, museums or miniature golf.

Pearland Youth Inspire Leadership through Community Service

T

he members of the Pearland Youth Action Council embody the idea of leading by example. These dedicated Pearland teens lead actively in the community through the volunteer service that they provide and the unique role that they play as the voice of the Pearland Youth. Whether they are helping out at the Pearland Parks and Recreation Summer Fest or being guests on an online talk show for almost 500,000 viewers, the members of the Pearland Youth Action Council carry themselves with poise and are proud of what they do.

Bud Tollefson, 17, a senior at Pearland High School who recently resigned his position on the council as Interpersonal Chairman, was one of the first official members of Pearland Youth Action Council, or YAC, a group dedicated to bringing a leadership role to Pearland’s Youth.

“What we stand for,” says Tollefson, “is to promote youth leadership through community involvement.”

The organization meets regularly every Wednesday. Tollefson explained that over each two week period, the first Wednesday is a mandatory meeting and the following Wednesday is a project meeting where YAC plans its various volunteer activities, such as texting classes at the local senior center. There are also separate group meetings on other days, scheduled at the group’s discretion, to plan side projects, and meetings with Parks and Recreation where it acts as the voice of the Youth of Pearland, offering advice on what Parks and Rec programs might interest teens the most.

The council receives funding from Pearland Parks and Recreation. However, while YAC does use its Parks and Rec budget to assist in projects such as an upcoming art gallery to showcase the art of Pearland’s youth, most of the projects are self funded, explained Becky Zaremba, 14, a freshman at Pearland High School and

aren’t totally committed to being a part of YAC,” she said.

Despite the selective criteria for applicants, membership in YAC has grown exponentially over its short lifetime.

“We’ve grown like crazy,” said Tollefson, whose duties included interviewing and recruiting applicants. The group now has 18 members after starting out two years ago with just two.

Even though six of those 18 members will be graduating high school this year, Tollefson believes the effort will continue, “It’ll grow even more [now] because the people that we have are so confident in themselves that when we [graduating seniors] leave I know it’s not going to stop there, it’s going to keep growing,” he concluded. � Some of YAC participants who attended the summit. (Photo from YAC Facebook page) YAC’s Public Relations Chair. “We get a budget [from Parks and Rec],” Tollefson elaborated, “but it’s not enough for the projects we plan.” He said that YAC does not try to obtain more funding from Parks and Recreation so that P&R is able to fund other programs.

Applying to become a part of those self-funded YAC projects is a simple, yet thorough, process. First, applicants fill out an application, which they can find on the Pearland Parks and Recreation website or obtain from one of the members of YAC. Once the applications have been compiled by YAC, they close their application process and schedule an interview with each applicant.

When asked what interviewers look for, Tollefson told us that the group wants to know “who has huge potential and who is just wanting to get into YAC to put on their college resumé.”

he Pearland High School band, cheerleaders and trustees gathered to celebrate the Lady Oiler softball team’s State Championship victory on June 9 at the PISD school board meeting.

Superintendent Bonny Cain and City Councilman Ed Thompson were on hand to congratulate the girls and to present the team with a $1,000 check from the School Board.

Led by Head Coach Laneigh Clark, who was named the District 22-5A Coach of the Year, the Lady Oilers defeated Austin Bowie 4-0 on June 5 to win the state title.

“The best team won,” associate head coach Michele Hyden said. “Our girls wouldn’t take anything less than first place.”

Last year, Pearland tasted the championship in a 1-0 loss to Smithson Valley, and told themselves “they were not going to fall short this year,” Hyden added.

Going into the championship game with 37 wins and 6 losses, Pearland was picked to win the title and, with a mix of talent and mental toughness, the Lady Oilers pulled through.

Junior Jessica Bowden pitched a complete game shutout and only allowed five hits and struck out five batters during the game.

“Keep it out of the zone,” Bowden said she told herself while on the mound.

“Bowie wasn’t very aggressive, but when they did make contact my defense was able to stop them. I couldn’t have done it without my defense.”

The players and coaches all agree that the win truly was a team effort.

The Lady Oilers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth after Brooke Dubois made it home off of a single from Haley Beam’s bat.

In the fifth, Pearland senior Megan Coronado led off with a single and was bunted to second. Championship game MVP, senior Jaclyn Bechtle, scored Coronado on a double bringing the score to 2-0.

Bowden’s defense came to her rescue in the seventh to close out the game after striking out the first batter.

Maly made a diving catch for the second out. Then with a runner on base, the opposing team hit the ball to left field when junior Sara Clements made the catch for the final out of the game.

When asked, “how does it feel to win state?” The girls all respond with a resounding, “Awesome!”

“It was such an amazing feeling,” Bechtle said. “Everyone starts the year wanting to win a state championship.

It’s a once in a lifetime chance.”

Fellow senior, Coronado added, “Coming back from a loss last year and winning this year was phenomenal. Watching the seniors last year was heartbreaking; I didn’t want to go through that.”

Bowden, Maly, Coronado, Bechtle and junior Chelsea Bennett were named to the UIL State All-Tournament team.

However, Coronado says that each teammate played a key part in the victory.

“As a team we made the plays we pearland

needed to make,” Coronado said. “Toward the end of the season there was always a different person to step up, which helped with the pressure because you know it’s not only you out there.”

Coach Hyden agrees.

“As the momentum started to build, the kids just refused to lose,” she said.

“As a team, they kept finding a way to win. I give a lot of credit to these kids.”

As Superintendent Cain introduced the team at the school board meeting, she alluded to next year’s season saying she “liked the sound of all those juniors.”

In fact, the Lady Oilers will only lose two seniors this year.

According to Bowden, however, those seniors will leave big shoes to fill.

“I’m very excited about next year’s season,” Bowden starts. “But, Megan and Jaclyn were great hitters. Everyone is going to have to step it up with them gone.”

Until then, the Lady Oilers can bask in the glow of their championship win.

With their skill, hard work and determination, these young ladies have to be proud of themselves. H

Protect Your Personal Information on Vacation

T

his is the time of year when many people finalize their summer vacation plans – confirming travel and lodging reservations, dusting off suitcases and looking for games to occupy the kids on long road trips. Just be sure that when your brain goes into vacation mode, you don’t ignore the same precautions you take during everyday life to protect your personal information.

Here are a few safeguards to keep in mind: Guard your itinerary. In the old days, police warned against sharing too much information about funerals and marriages in the newspaper, for fear robbers would target empty homes. But these days, many people think nothing of sharing their vacation schedules on social networking sites or in outgoing phone or email messages.

Sure, you might only share your plans with a few friends, but who’s to say they won’t inadvertently pass it along to someone you don’t know? Plus, no matter how carefully you shield your plans, your kids might have no such reservations with their online friends. Consider instituting a family rule that no vacation plans or photos get posted until you’re safely home.

Streamline your wallet. It’s never wise to carry too much information – or

cash – in your wallet, but that’s especially true when traveling. Bring two credit or debit cards, in case one inadvertently gets damaged or deactivated by the card issuer because of suspected fraud, but leave the rest at home. Also, never carry your Social Security card or other sensitive papers – leave them safely locked up.

Make sure to carry your health and car insurance identification. Also, photocopy or make a list of your wallet’s contents (and passport, if traveling abroad) and keep it in a secure, locked location, such as a hotel safe; and leave a copy with someone at home you can call in the event your wallet is stolen.

Card precautions. Let the financial institution that issues your credit and debit cards know when and where you’ll be traveling so they can be on guard for unauthorized transactions. While you’re at it, make a list of their toll-free fraud hotlines in case of theft and carry it separately. I also program these phone numbers into my cell phone for quick access.

Beware of card skimming, where dishonest restaurant or store employees use a portable card reader to copy information from your credit or debit card’s magnetic strip. Also avoid using unusual-looking ATMs because they

could have an altered card slot and hidden cameras that can be used to steal your account information and password.

Computer precautions. Whenever logging onto the Internet on your laptop at a Wi-Fi hotspot, hotel business center or other public facility whose server may not be encrypted, be extra cautious before doing online banking or other passwordprotected services.

Safeguard your home. If no one will be house-sitting while you’re away, have your mail held at the post office. Also, suspend newspaper subscriptions and ask a friend to remove fliers, packages or free newspapers.

Local Student Places at the Scripps National

A

ditya Chemudupaty spelled his way to the final round of the 83rd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, which aired live June 4th on ABC. Chemudupaty, an eighth grader at Nolan Ryan Junior High School in Pearland, made it through the sixth round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee tying with ten other pupils for ninth place.

Chemudupaty breezed through the first 5 rounds of the Bee, spelling pansit, crotalic, undine and genethliac correctly. However, in the sixth round, he misspelled engiseismology, which is defined as a geophysical science that involves earthquakes. This thirteen-year-old is a spelling bee veteran; this is his second appearance at the National Spelling Bee, and Chemudupaty believes that the Bee is “a wonderful experience and I wish everyone could have the opportunity to participate.”

In 2009, Chemudupaty placed 12th, and in 2010, he advanced three places in his last year of eligibility for the national title. This poised eighth grader is quick to point out that the Bee is not just about spelling. “We are in

Washington D.C. for a week, and the actual Bee is scheduled for only 2 of those days,” explained Chemudupaty.

“They have many activities for us to participate in throughout the week such as the Awards Banquet AfterParty, the opportunity to meet Shaquille O’Neal and the Great American BBQ where I got to be the magician’s assistant!”

This year, the spellers ranged in age from 8 to 15. Eighty percent of the spellers were between 12 and 14 years old, and there were 144 boys and 129 girls. All of the students begin preparing for the spelling bee months in advance. Chemudupaty prepares by reading novels to enhance his vocabulary, memorizing prefixes, referencing various spelling rules and being quizzed by his mother, Aruna. Spellers get to the National Spelling Bee by participating in school-conducted bees in the fall and winter. From there, the spellers are invited to participate in Local Spelling Bees. Local Spelling Bee Sponsors are usually newspapers or other high-profile community businesses and organizations in the area. All of the champions in the lo-

cally sponsored Spelling Bees receive an invitation to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. Once the students arrive in Washington D.C., the first round of spelling is completed using a computer keyboard. The students are asked to spell 50 words, while only 25 of the words count towards their preliminary score.

In rounds two and three, the spellers are onstage spelling one word for each round. After round three, 50 semifinalists are chosen based on the amount of points earned in rounds one, two and three. Twenty-five points are possible from round one, and three points are awarded for every word spelled correctly in rounds two and three, bringing the ultimate total for a preliminary score to 31. Starting in round 4, once a speller misspells a word, they are dismissed from the competition.

The Spelling Bee has become a popular, nationally televised event. Chemudupaty feels should continue to be a yearly event because “it empowers and inspires people to achieve their dreams.” We are so proud of Aditya!

Brazoria County Library System announces the opening of the Pearland Westside library pick-up location On June 9th, after months of planning, the Brazoria County Library System was pleased to announce the opening of the Pearland Westside library pick-up location.

Located in the Westside Event Center at 2150 Countryplace Parkway the Westside site will be opened 20 hours each week. Although no browsing collection will be available at the site, library patrons will be able to get library cards, pay fines and request items and retrieve them at the Event Center.

This pick-up location is the result of months of work and cooperation between Brazoria County and the City of Pearland.

It represents the beginning of the process for providing a full service branch for the west side of Pearland.

“Everyone involved recognizes the importance of giving all Pearland citizens equitable access to a BCLS branch. Obviously a full-service library is the goal. This is just the first step on the path to that goal,” said BCLS Library Director, Cathy Threadgill.

Remember when . . .

T

he date was August 22, 1910 and in a small town known as Markham, Texas a new life was born. Now 100 years since that date, Mary Lee Smith Miller celebrates 100 years of joy, sorrow, adventure, and much more. What can be written about this long life is more than this space allows, but suffice it to say, Mary Lee spent her life giving to her family, her church, and her community.

The oldest of four children, Mary Lee spent her early years in the town of her birth. She later moved with her family to the Houston area and eventually at the age of 14, became a resident of Pearland, Texas. Her father and mother, Dave and Ina Smith, along with siblings Clarence, Joy, and David made their home on the Hughes Ranch which was located on what is now known as Hughes Ranch Road or County Road 403. The ranch was about 6 miles to the main street in Pearland and another 15 miles to Webster, Texas where Mary Lee attended school.

In 1935, Mary Lee married a local Pearland boy, Jack Miller and a few years later had a daughter, Ina Kathryn. Jack ran a gas and oil station on Main Street. Mary Lee, was the consummate cook, seamstress, and homemaker. Her four nieces fondly remember her fig preserves, dewberry picking along the railroad track, and playing dress-up in her closet. “Aunt Mary Lee was so patient with us and trips to her house are vivid in my mind,” recalls her youngest niece. “She had the best attic and we would spend hours playing in that magical place.”

As a mother, Mary Lee was a life member of the PTA, Sunday school teacher, and along with Mrs. Ernest Martin the founder of the Pearland Band Booster Club. “We needed new uniforms and there was no money so Mother and Mrs. Martin started the club. They signed a note to borrow the amount of money needed for the uniforms and then proceeded to raise the

own yard work well into her 80’s.

As with everything in her life, Mary Lee was the adventurer and over the course of her life traveled to places some of us only imagine. She journeyed to New Zealand, Australia, Kenya, Europe, Panama Canal, China, Alaska, Israel and Greece. “I never went on any of her trips out of the United States, but every time Aunt Mary Lee and Uncle Jack packed up for a road trip, I was always asked to go along. Rite of Passage provides an alternative choice for well woman care and pregnancy Bernadette Olivier is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) who owns and operates Rite of Passage Women’s Health and Birth Center. The center, located at 2206 East Broadway Suite E in Pearland, is currently in its fifth year of business. Bernadette moved here from Canada in 1992 to start her career as a Registered Nurse at Bayshore Hospital in Pasadena. Working in labor and delivery inspired her to obtain her Bachelor’s degree at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1997. She soon returned to school again, and graduated in 2004 with a Master’s of Science in Nursing with a certification in Midwifery. Bernadette has been married to her husband, Jerry for sixteen years and has three children: Alexandria (12), Justin (10) and Christina (2).

In April 2006, Bernadette opened Rite of Passage to provide an alternative choice for well woman care and pregnancy. She believes every woman deserves individualized, one-on-one care and education about pregnancy, hormones, health and wellness. She believes in empowering women by providing them with information to make informed choices regarding their health.

In June, Bernadette hired a second CNM, Melissa White. Other friendly faces at the center include: Mary Lou Huerta and Whitney Hall, Medical Assistants, and Lisa Nabors, Billing and Coding.

Bernadette is in the process of building a new center which will offer continuity of care for women, children, and men. She plans to hire a Family Nurse Practitioner and another midwife to assist with clients. The new center will open in summer of 2011.

Edible Landscaping:

A Delicious Design Part 2

ast time I discussed adding vegetables, shrubby fruits, and fruiting vines to your landscape but those are only a few of the choices available to today’s homeowner. There are many other plant choices you can make to add edible plants to your landscape rather than simply ornamental plants.

Let’s continue our journey into edible landscaping…

With our warm, humid climate here in Pearland, there are many tropical and sub-tropical fruits that we can grow successfully. Let’s take a look at a few of them here.

Pomegranate Pomegranates do very well here.

You can find them in either standard or dwarf forms. Many people enjoy eating the seeds of pomegranates while others enjoy the juice, which is high in antioxidants. The standard forms of pomegranates can get pretty tall (10’+), so make sure you have room before you purchase one. The dwarf forms stay much smaller but so do their fruit, which is primarily only ornamental anyway. Be sure to plant them in a sunny, well-drained location. Their fruit generally ripens from August to September. Good varieties for our area include ‘Garnet Sash’, ‘Cloud’, ‘Kashmir Blend’, ‘Pink Satin’ and ‘Sharp Velvet’.

Guava Guavas are cold sensitive but we can be successful with them here in our area if we plan well. Plant them in full sun on the west or south side of your home, garage, or storage building. They must be protected from freezing temperatures. Some people build a framework over them and cover it with fabric to provide protection. Additional warmth can be provided by adding a small heater, electric lights (such as Christmas lights wrapped around the trunk), or even a large bucket of warm water. The water gives off its warmth gradually, thereby heating the air slightly and helping to keep the temperatures a few degrees warmer. ‘Barbie Pink’ is reportedly a good variety for our area with pink flesh that is best eaten fresh.

Avocado Avocados can do well here if you can get them through their first couple of years. Don’t be tempted to try to grow your own from seed. Most avocados that you purchase at the grocery store are imported from Chile or elsewhere in South America and will not be adapted to our area. A much better option would be to purchase one from a local fruit tree sale. These have generally been selected from hardy Mexican or south Texas stock and better adapted to our climate.

A good place to try would be Urban Harvest which puts on a great fruit tree sale each year in late winter. For a great primer on how to be successful with avocados, go to Urban Harvests web site at www.urbanharvest.org. Avocados do get large in time, so give them plenty of space to develop.

Bananas Growing bananas is one of my specialties. I have several edible types in my landscape in Pearland. ‘Orinoco’ is one of the most reliable in our area for obtaining edible fruit. Others to consider include ‘Raja Puri’, ‘Dwarf Orinoco’, ‘Ice Cream’, and ‘California Gold’. One of the most important things to know about growing bananas for fruit is that you must protect the pseudostem (what most people would call the trunk) from freezing temperatures during the winter. To accomplish this, wrap the pseudostem with frost pearland

cloth, a blanket, or burlap when temperatures fall below 40 º F. The bud that the fruit develops from begins its journey from the very bottom of the plant so it is imperative that you not cut your banana plants back too far each spring. Figs Figs are one of the most popular fruits to grow here in the Houston area. They are somewhat cold-sensitive but generally have no problem in our area. My ‘Celeste’ fig did just fine this past winter with no protection other than some mulch over the root zone. Most figs produce a large crop in the spring and some will produce again as temperatures cool in the fall.

Figs plants can get quite large, so be sure to give them plenty of room to develop.

They also do best with regular water, fertilizer, and a 3-4” layer of mulch over their root zone. There are many varieties that do well in our area, such as ‘Celeste’, ‘LSU Purple’, ‘LSU Gold’, and ‘Banana Fig’.

Take a look around your lawn and landscape. Surely you have room out there for one (or three!) of these delicious fruits. Do yourself and your family a favor and give one a try. You’ll be glad you did!

After School Program New this year! Pearland Parks & Recreation is proud to offer an After School program starting in the fall. Private Schools & After School Activities Around Pearland The Learning Skool-House The Learning Skool-House is the brainchild of Sarah Sim, an educator for more than 20 years. Pearland Focus recently sat down with Sarah for an interview regarding The Learning Skool-House’s plan for expansion.

Pearland Focus (PF): What is the focus of your afterschool program?

Sarah: We focus on strengthening our students’ Math and Reading skills. We use Math drills derived from the Singapore Math curriculum which has raised our students’ Math scores significantly. Our students receive a daily dose of Math drills and Reading/Language Arts assignments.

In addition, students choose to enroll in either Chinese or Spanish classes.

PF: How does The Learning Skool-House meet the needs of children here in the Pearland area?

Sarah: We provide free pick up from several local schools including Silverlake, Silvercrest, Challenger, Massey Ranch, Marek, Wilder, Nolan Ryan Junior High and Rogers Middle School. In addition to the after-school program, our enrichment classes taught by highly qualified and certified teachers help to raise and strengthen the academic standards of elementary through high school students.

PF: What kind of summer program do you have?

Sarah: There are a growing number of parents who desire an academic summer camp for their children. I think that summer is a good time for students to continue sharpening their academic skills. Our summer academics camp provides a balance of fun and academics for students. Our summer camp students stay ahead academically when the new school year begins in the Fall.

PF: How do you measure the academic effectiveness of the program?

Sarah: Last year, 100% of our students met the standards for the TAKS. In addition, the percentage of students scoring at “Commended” for Math, Reading and Writing were 92%, 89% and 100% respectively.

We are extremely proud of our students who don’t seem to mind spending time, outside of regular school, to do “extra academic work”.

I

t has been 15 years since the lovable Woody graced our screens in the iconic original Toy Story. Seems like that was decades ago, particularly as the Summer season has gotten underway with a boatload of underachieving and mucked-up films that do nothing but make you wish you hadn’t wasted your hard earned money. Toy Story 3 is sure to cure the doldrums that we are all experiencing because of our summer of promised blockbusters that have yet to arrive.

Returning with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen’s loveable duo of Woody and Buzz are Jessie (Joan Cusack), Hamm (John Ratzenberger) and Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris). In addition, we add some new toys to the toy box with the strawberry scented bear Lotso (Ned Beatty), the Ken Doll (Michael Keaton) and the hilarious Mr. Pricklepants (Timothy Dalton).

The latest film opens with an incredible action sequence that we discover all takes place within the mind and memory of little Andy (John Morris). We jump forward to discover that the adult Andy is leaving for college and mom demands that he first clean his room and bag up all his toys for storage.

As luck has it, mom mistakes the bag of toys for garbage and the adventure soon begins at a preschool day care center!

There is no question this particular installment plays with much darker emotions, including old age and self esteem. Don’t get me wrong, this film is still packed full of the laughs and jokes that make Pixar the number one animated film outlet in the world. The final act of the film will have you rolling on the floor gasping for oxygen. Kudos to Disney Pixar for another brilliant product!

Changes are Coming

T

here’s change coming....and I have to tell you I am not happy at all about it. In fact, I’m a little scared. Scared more for my children really than myself, and it is a kind of fear that is gnawing at me. It all started a few weeks ago when I saw on This Sunday Morning a report on animals that are rare or now, extinct. The photographer, Joel Satore, had just released a book entitled Rare.

The Columbian Basin Pigmy Rabbit, the Wyoming Toad, the Grizzly Bear, the Whooping Crane, the Mexican Grey Wolf and the Red Wolf, just to mention a few.

All of them are now gone, or very soon to be.

I immediately thought about our trip to New York, and the day we went to The Museum of Natural Science. I had some heavy questions to answer from a very inquisitive James Edward who had just discovered the dinosaur exhibits. “Why are they gone?” and “How did that happen?” These were just a few of the in depth questions that I could see would lead to exhausting all of my knowledge of the hows and whys of animal extinction.

Those thought-provoking questions made me think of these other animals now facing extinction. Animals less fearsome, perhaps, than dinosaurs, and I began to feel a great sadness about the whole thing....that of extinction. It got me thinking about a lot of things.

Conservation was one, and becoming “greener” in the way I was raising my children. Then, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day came, and with it washed ashore a baby whale whose belly was filled with items carelessly discarded. I was bothered especially by this news, and with it brought another set of questions from both of my children. It was obvious to me

that we, as a family, were going to reset our game plan for how we consumed and disposed of our daily living. I was feeling pretty good about our plans for change with summer fast approaching and both children very anxious to make sure we were doing our part. I was feeling just fine, until the oil spill....

I am no rocket scientist, but there’s just not a lot of messing around with safety when dealing with, essentially, the earth’s crust! Haven’t these people watched the Beverly Hillbillies? That crude came up in a roar and showered down a mess of mucky grossness that even television portrayed clearly. All other disasters pale in comparison to this one. The bayous and beaches of Louisiana are home to a whopping 40% of all of the coastal wetlands in the continental U.S.! I am not telling you anything you haven’t already read or watched on television. I’m just angry about it - really, really angry. After researching this massive disaster that will have a lasting impact on our environment for years to come, I feel compelled to share with you what I have discovered.

Time magazine reported that, “It’s only in the Gulf of Mexico, whose waters yield nearly a third of U.S.-produced oil, and resource rich Alaska that a moratorium on off-shore drilling has never been considered. The results have been an outsourcing of America’s off shoring to countries like Kazakhstan and Angola, which are rapidly becoming the world’s new oil powers. Their fields may hold billions of barrels of petroleum, but their environmental standards are nonexistent. Nigeria - a petro-state that produces more than 2 million barrels of oil a day, has spills equal to that of the Exxon Valdez about every year.

a huge mass of consumers in the U.S. who just want oil to be cheap and don’t want to think about the externalities. And who don’t care about oil spills on the west coast of Africa.” (Time, May 17, 2010, “The Meaning of the Mess” by Bryan Walsh) Well, I care! And I think if everyone were to actually become aware of the situation, they would care more too.

I am sickened by the ramifications of such carelessness on our wildlife, and on the livelihoods of so many fishermen. The birds and turtles are coming up covered in a gross, reddish muck. In addition, there will be a lot missing from our beaches and our dinner plates for many years to come.

One very special act of nature may never ever happen again - that of a rare occurrence called a jubilee. Fishery experts say it’s not uncommon for shallow bays to have oxygen deprivation, known as ‘hypoxic events,’ for short periods of time that bring some fish to the surface.

Experts say the combination of factors in Mobile Bay that sends thousands of fish and crustaceans to the shore all at once -- and that the critters are all alive -- is unique to the area. At 74, Doris is known as the Jubilee Watcher of Point Clear.

With the oil slick in the Gulf, Doris and other locals are wondering about the fate of jubilees. Even if the slick misses Mobile Bay, will the ‘jubilee’ seafood be safe to eat? What will happen if the crabs, flounder, and others rise to the surface in thick black crude? “The stench of the seafood will be a horrible thing,” Doris says. “Stop to think about thousands and thousands and thousands of crabs, fish, porpoises and sharks, all coming to shore dead.”

Doris has a unique idea on how to plug the oil well that has leaked 210,000 gallons of crude a day into the Gulf. Her plan involves BP executives. “Bunch them up and stick them in that great big hole that they’re trying to stop up. Excuse my being ugly,” she says in a Southern drawl, “but that’s what I think about them.” (“Oil threatens Alabama’s jolly good time”, May 17, 2010 by Wayne Drash) I am right there with her!

And so, it has come full circle. There’s lots of change coming, and I’m a little scared. We should feel responsible for our earth and all its living creatures. I have a new respect for dinosaurs and baby whales and boy am I going to really miss my oysters and my shrimp! More importantly, it’s insane to think we can waste our natural resources and watch calmly as animals one by one disappear. We are, after all, animals too. Things are changing, and it should make us all very nervous.

Precious PETS Pearland Animal Hospital Pearland Animal Hospital has played an important role in the healthcare of Pearland family pets for over 42 years. Dr. Bobby Stevener opened the hospital in 1967 after serving in the United States Air Force.

Bubba and Sissy story Two precious puppies

very day homeless animals from across Texas find their way to the Brazoria County Humane Society.

Though all of these animals are special, some of them have stories that are so touching they will have you reaching for the Kleenex box.

Bubba and Sissy are two puppies with a remarkable tale.

At three months old, this brother and sister pair came to the society. Their owner, an older man, was diagnosed with cancer and could no longer properly take care of them. He brought the Australian Shepherd mixes to the Brazoria County Humane Society.

As with any other new animal that comes to the organization, Executive Director Shirley Tinnin took Bubba and Sissy to a veterinarian for a routine examination. Their story took a heart-wrenching turn at this appointment.

“We took them to the vet to have them examined,” Tinnin said. “That’s when we found out that Sissy did not have a globe in one eye and was almost blind in the other. She was also deaf. Bubba was completely healthy.”

Tinnin, who operates the Humane Society out of her home, took the pups to her house and immediately began to notice something incredible.

“I began to see that Bubba was her seeing-eye dog,” Tinnin starts. “It was just so odd how he would take care of her.

He would lead her to the water bowl and

around the house. It was really remarkable how he would take care of her like he did.”

Tinnin decided that the pair needed to stay together and would have to find a family who would take both of them.

“Since they’ve always been together, I wanted them to feel secure, especially Sissy,” Tinnin said. “Bubba would have made it on his own, but I really wanted Sissy to be OK.” For the next two months, Bubba and Sissy stayed with Tinnin as the Humane Society searched for the perfect family to adopt them. During this time, Tinnin became quite attached to them.

“They were just very affectionate,” Tinnin said. “They were very sweet and intelligent. Sissy had a good sense of smell.

She would follow me around because she could smell me. They were both loving and sweet. They took a plug out of your heart.”

In the mean time, volunteers used the organization’s Web site and Facebook page to get the word out about these extraordinary puppies, and they even created a video to show how they interact with each other.

Tinnin knew it would have to be a special family to take the pair.

“We needed someone that was going to be patient,” Tinnin shared. “There are going to be mistakes when you have handicapped dogs. We needed someone who would nurture them.

because they are going to be big dogs.”

Finally, a family approached them about adopting the puppies.

“When we did the home visit, I saw that they had a nice yard and home,” Tinnin said. “They also had another dog that was very well taken care of. They were an average family, but I could tell they loved their pet.”

With that, Bubba and Sissy found their “forever home.”

Tinnin was happy they found a good home, but still cried when they left saying, “all dogs are special, but some more so.”

Now, Bubba and Sissy have adapted well to their new home and are living the life that two sweet puppies deserve.

Tinnin established the Brazoria County Humane Society in December of 2003 to have a place where animals could be safe.

It is a no-kill shelter and adopts out an average of 1,000 animals a year.

“The majority of animals we take come from kill shelters,” Tinnin said. “We rescue animals the day they are going to die and hold them until they are adopted in foster homes.”

The organization holds adoptions at the Pearland PetSmart every weekend from noon to 5 p.m. The Society’s Web site, www.brazoriacountyhumane.org, and Facebook page are also used to let the community know what animals are up for adoption.

Tinnin mostly runs the society on her own with help from five dedicated volunteers. She is currently seeking more volunteers and potential foster parents.

She is also hoping to build a facility in the near future so she can save more animals like Bubba and Sissy.

“If we can get the land donated then we can build a facility that could house and save more animals,” Tinnin explains.

“Right now all of our animals are in foster homes and there is a limit to how many each person can take and of course there are never enough fosters. There are several grants out there [that will help us pay for the building] but not one of them will pay for land.”

This organization saves the lives of animals in the Pearland community every day. Within the walls of Tinnin’s home there is always a dog or a cat with a special story, and thanks to the Brazoria County Humane Society, they will live to tell it. H

Old Settlers Cemetery – A Pearland Historic Site

I

n 1988 the “Old Settlers Cemetery” at the end of Halik Road was declared a Texas historic site. At the time, 91 year old Lois Hunter Bundy wrote about her memories of the day Pearland citizens heard World War I had come to an end – Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. Lois Hunter Bundy passed away at the age of 101 in November of 2007. The new City park on Orange Street is named “Hunter Park” in honor of Lois’ parents Robert L. and Julia Hunter Martin who settled on the property around 1902. The little essay Lois wrote in 1988 reflects the memory of the then 12 year old girl remembering the Pearland celebration at the “Old Settlers Cemetery”.

spread quickly by word of mouth over Pearland and into Suburban Gardens, west of town. I remember being in school when I learned, but school was promptly dismissed.

No time wasted before leading citizens in town decided to organize a march for everyone to participate, big, little, old and young, and that we would march down our main road leading to the cemetery where our loved ones were buried. We all came together at the school building.

Mr. Frankenburger, Mr. Archer, Mr. King, and Mr. Fry, all Civil War veterans, were chosen to be flag bearers and lead the march. Forming the line in pairs they carried a flag representing the United States of America, the Union or Confederate armies. We lined up behind them in the same order walking along waving our little American flags, those who had them, for everyone was just overwhelmed with patriotism. Even the younger ones seemed caught up in the patriotic event. The memory is still close in my heart.

When we reached the cemetery we paused to rest and then, silently, in our own humble way offered up a prayer to God in thanksgiving, for the horrible war ending. Then we scattered about to visit in memory with our individual family members buried there. A very solemn occasion.

“It was a bright, clear, autumn day in Pearland on Monday, November 11, 1918.

Haymakers were out in the field cutting and baling hay for winter use, other folks over town were at their usual tasks, school was in session, when--suddenly the entire community was alerted by the fig plant whistle blowing--continuously. Another whistle sounded from a train entering Pearland on the north at Clear Creek and it continued to blow constantly as the train passed through town and on toward Alvin.

A message came over the telegraph wire at the depot confirming that World War I had ended!
