MIRFIELD man Howard Tomlinson won his first Olympic gold medal at the Special Olympics in Bournemouth. Howard, who has Down’s syndrome, came first in the table tennis, beating three opponents to earn gold. “When we picked him up the coach told us that he had won bronze, then his wife corrected him and said he had won gold,” Howard’s father Ivan told The Press. “It is the first time he has come first in everything, he went to Sheffield earlier in the year for the Special Olympics and finished fourth in the doubles, third in his class and third in the open tournament. “Everyone has been congratulating him, we go to church every Sunday and everyone there has been saying how great of an achievement it is.” Howard has been playing the sport for over 15 years and took an interest after going to sessions with his mum, Susan. “My wife used to play table tennis and was number four in the country,” added Ivan. “Howard used to go along with her and pick the ball up and then one day someone suggested that he should play and it all started from there.” The ping-pong player is now back home in Mirfield where he continues to train twice a week.
FIRST OF MANY: Howard proudly holds his gold medal and hopes to add many more

Ossett romp to victory Yorkshire Merit League
WORTLEY 1ST XV OSSETT 2ND XV
16 46
OSSETT were able to forget the disappointment of last week’s defeat as they blew away Wortley 1st XV in extremely blustery conditions. Wortley were unbeaten prior to Ossett’s visit and despite fielding a makeshift squad the away side were able to secure victory on Wortley’s pristine pitch. Captain Tom Sprott was
influential throughout and his words of wisdom prior to kick off sparked Ossett into life. Jim Edgington crossed for the opening score inside three minutes, setting the pattern for the next 20 minutes as Ossett were relentless going forward. Alan Grogan caused mayhem with his hazy runs, slipping tackles with ease, Dan Bonner controlled possession from the ruck and with Jack Mumford making good inroads Ossett soon found themselves 27-0 up. Wortley responded to the
visitor’s pressure with a change of tactics that saw them pull a try back before the break. In the second half Ossett tried to weather an early Wortley storm. But persistence paid off as the hosts scored their second try of the afternoon following the restart. The visitors stood firm for the remainder of the game and scored three more tries to seal a magnificent victory. Ossett’s first team were also in action, and they won in style with a 60-0 victory over Sheffield Oaks.

Town in good form ahead of League Cup tie against Tingley By Mike Popplewell Football Correspondent sport@thepressnews.co.uk
OSSETT TOWN go into their daunting League Cup tie with in-form Premier Division side Tingley Athletic in good spirits after maintaining a 100 per cent record in Division One with a 4-1 derby win over Dewsbury Rangers. Two goals from substitute Carly Doyle and one each from Vicky Penney and Tina Toohey secured Town’s third-successive win to start their league season, but with Tingley boasting four from four in the top flight it promises to be an uphill fight for the Ossett side. Dewsbury Rangers are at Third Division Phoenix in the League Shield. It has been a good week all round for Ossett Town as their Development side picked up their first win of the season in Division Two when they ran out 5-0 winners at Hebden Royd. Goals from Romy Bearder (two), Caroline Omboyi and Lyndsey Benson helped seal the win and this week they are at home to
Third Division Durkar in the League Shield. Lower Hopton maintained their unbeaten record in this division when they had an impressive 5-3 win at Ripon City to stay second, with their fourth win from four. Middleton are top after winning all five from five. Dani Anthony hit a hat-trick for free-scoring Hopton in that game and they will need all that fire power this week when they take on Premier Division Brayton Belles in the League Cup. In the North East Regional League Ossett Albion could be sick of the sound of Harrogate by the end of the month. Having been thrashed 7-2 at home to Harrogate Town already this season they went down 7-3 in their last game at Harrogate Railway. They now have a return game at Railway this week followed by a return with Town the week after. Thankfully, the two teams below them in the Southern Division have both still to record their first win, but having played six of their scheduled 14 games already they have completed two more than everyone else in the division and a win is badly needed.
