Akbar, 15, who is based at the Warrior Breed boxing gym in Dewsbury, defeated Thames Valley’s Caulay Suttie to clinch his first national title. Akbar was quick off the mark in the bout, scoring a standing eight count and forcing Suttie to touch the canvas following a textbook right hand. The remaining two rounds saw Akbar catch Suttie with repeated check hooks before the Thames Valley fighter was caught by a strong counter right hand which clinched Akbar’s 10th career win. Akbar began his journey last month when he defeated former national finalist Waqas Rouf of Wakefield’s White Rose Boxing Club to become the new Yorkshire champion.
DUE TO a full District Cup programme only four games took place in the Heavy Woollen Sunday League last weekend. In the Championship Deighton WMC climbed to eighth place with a 3-1 win over fellow Huddersfield-based side Town Rangers. In Division One, The Yorkshireman moved to top spot after drawing 3-3 with Birkenshaw Reserves. Nathan Alexander, Darryl Senior and Leon Pinnock netted
for the new leaders, with Birkenshaw hitting back through a Ryan Hird brace plus a strike from Nathan Foster. Batley Irish Nash moved up to third place in Division Two after demolishing Overthorpe Sports Club Reserves 12-1. Elliott Williams led the way with four
goals, Kyle Walker and Tom Yarnold both hit doubles, with Sean Housecroft, David O’Keefe, Matthew Barrett and Jordan Ledgard completing the tally. Lee Davey bagged the consolation goal for Overthorpe, who remain second bottom. In another allHuddersfield battle, Tom Travas, Blaine Cudjoe and James Gilling-Kelly all found the nets in a 31 win over bottom side Shire, who replied through Steve Evans.
SPEN VALLEY LEAGUE FOOTBALL
Sorry Smokin Aces are hit for seven IN THE Spen Valley league only three games took place, including Salthorn’s trip to face to Whitburn Athletic which saw the visitors collect all three points thanks to an impressive 5-2 victory. Salthorn netted through David Goodchild and a pair of braces from Joe Brown and Stephen Kennedy. But a hat-trick from the hosts’ Sohail Mahmood insured Salthorn had to work hard for their win. The victory means Salthorn climb to ninth, a point behind Whitburn in seventh. In the First Division there were double the fixtures, with Inter Batley being the standout performers after their
emphatic 7-1 away win at Smokin Aces. Raees Lorgat scored four with Arshad Navsarka, Osama Ahmed and Abu Samad Patel completing the scoring for the away side. Daniel Pandor replied for the hosts. West End Park’s struggles this season continued in their 7-2 defeat at Howden Clough. The hosts dominated with braces from Simon Moore and Reece Scholes before Ryan Kerracher, Lewis Boddy and Dom Carr completed the seven-goal haul. West End replied with goals from George Garforth and Paul Lawson and remain in search of their first win of the season.
The pressure mounted as Warrior Breed travelled to face other regional representatives in a frantic month which saw Akbar win four bouts on his way to the finals. The Warrior Breed gym also had
recent success with Hamza Urfan, who reached the national semi-finals, and Raheem Mustakeem, who lost out in the Yorshire Finals on a split decision against Taylor Watkins of Highfields Boxing Gym.

OSSETT TOWN have slipped to 18th in the Evo-Stik First Division North table after losing 5-0 to promotion hopefuls Spennymoor Town. Spennymoor made their home advantage count and were quick to get a foothold in the match when Glen Taylor broke the deadlock after three
minutes to nudge the hosts ahead. Ossett competed for the most part in the first period but when Scott Kerr double the hosts lead in the 39th minute the visitors were facing an uphill task. A second-half brace from Shane Henry, scoring in the 58th and 75th minute, sealed Ossett’s fate and their poor performance was compounded by Gavin Cogdon’s 86thminute strike to round off a dominant victory for the home side.

OSSETT ALBION took all three points after a 2-0 win in their clash with bottom-placed New Mills in the Evo-Stik First Division North. A goal from Connor Brunt on 15 minutes set Albion on their way but as the game wore on the hosts relied more and more on the long ball to create a further openings. New Mills worked tirelessly throughout but they struggled to forge any clear cut chances and test Brett Souter in the Albion goal. In the 70th minute a well taken free-

kick by Rob Bordman extended Albion’s lead but they still didn’t look comfortable. The home side were unable to control the play and gave away possession too easily.

But despite not playing fluid attacking football against New Mills, Albion did enough to win comfortably and climb to 10th in the league table after a well deserved three points.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL
West Riding sides struggle in County Cup BATTYEFORD BELLES and Dewsbury Rangers had a taste of FA Women’s Premier league football this week – and it didn’t taste too good. The West Riding County Cup threw up two WPL v West Riding League clashes and it finished in a spectacular 45-0 result for the WPL. It has been a good start to the season for Battyeford in the WR League First Division but despite spirited enthusiasm the Mirfield side were only in the game for the first 10 scoreless minutes before they lost 22-0. But it was even worse for Dewsbury Rangers with Guiseley Vixens running out 23-0 winners as Adele Jackson, Emily Scott, Nadine Bates and Tanya Rich all collected hat-tricks for the visitors. No luck either for Dan Robinson’s Ossett Town side as the reserves went
down 9-0 at Oulton and the first team lost 4-3 on penalties, at home to Tingley reserves. Caroline Omboyi, Chloe Holt and Gemma Howell were the Town scorers in open play. In contrast Ossett Albion completed a 6-1 win at Uppermill Ladies with two goals from skipper Gemma Patterson and one each from Kim Nallon, Nicki Swift, Claudia Cleary and a Charlotte Thomas spot kick. Rachel Powch took the player of the match award. In round two Albion go to Brighouse Athletic. But this week Ossett Town are at home to Tingley firsts, Battyeford are at third placed Silsden and Dewsbury Rangers are at home to Crossley. Meanwhile Ossett Albion host Westella and Willerby in the North East Southern Division Regional League.
