Heage windmill is to have a giant cobweb but help is needed to make it! As part of the Derwent Valley Heritage week, on Sunday October 27th, the staff of Heage Windmill plan to construct a giant autumn cobweb outside the mill so that all the many spiders can hide out safely during the winter whilst we are closed. The web will be made from

elastic ribbon and each visitor to the site will be invited to add another portion! Our ‘king spider’ will be in attendance to ensure everyone knows how to do it! Spinning of the web will start at 12-00 noon and its size will depend on how many people arrive to help make it. This will be the last opening day for the mill this season and we will be grateful of any help to make the cobweb a great

success! The mill will be open as

usual from 11am-4pm.

loyal and able Secretary and Mrs Lesley Handley who is again carrying out the duties of Treasurer - a very important role. As we did not have a speaker that evening, Sue Allen became our tutor and we had a very enjoyable time making Christmas and Birthday cards. After our initial apprehension we were all rather pleased at the results and Sue was well pleased with her ‘pupils’. The following week saw the Bramwell Institute full with ladies from Flagg, Burbage, Harpur Hill and Biggin and Taddington W.I.who were hosts of the Denham Group Meeting. Our special guests were Diane Smiles and Linda Singleton from the Executive Committee and Ann Mayo who is Group Convenor. We were then treated to a very enjoyable illustrated talk by Mrs Dorothy Whittaker who is the founder of the Valley CIDS. Lighthouse Charity Shops, a Christian based charity, which was set up fourteen years ago to support young people and families and now has 26 shops across the region as well as the Salt Pot Café in Swanwick. As many of us did not know much about this charity it was very interesting to learn how the charity has grown and about the excellent work that is carried out by dedicated people who help run Holiday clubs, ‘After School’ clubs, and Breakfast clubs for schoolchildren and are welcome in 70 schools across Derbyshire. Their latest project is the development of a 48 acre farm to educate and help young people and families. Everyone agreed that Dorothy’s enthusiasm and dedication was very inspiring and she was warmly thanked for her visit to Taddington. We then had a break for tea and home-made cakes with the tables being very prettily decorated with posies of flowers by Mrs Sue Allen, followed by excellent entertainment from Phil Heyworth with his keyboard and then setting us a musical quiz which brought back many memories. It’s surprising how many of us knew the tunes but had forgotten who the artists were! It certainly caused some fun and head scratching!!! At next month’s meeting on Thursday 7th November 7.30pm there will be a fascinating ‘Passage to India’ with Trevor Ride and Tony Paine as our guides. Anyone who has not yet had the pleasure of listening to and seeing the wonderful photographic journals that Trevor has composed should come along to the Bramwell Institute where they will be in for a treat. You will be assured of a warm welcome or if you don’t want to come alone, contact one of our members who will be happy to introduce you to our group.
