The Solution to Christmas Carol Fatigue?

Christmas is coming, with festive music greeting us at every turn – but, with the season seemingly starting earlier every year, how many of us are already secretly a bit fed up of hearing the same old carols played on repeat? One local musician thinks he has hit upon a solution. Fraser Wilson, who runs the choral group Albion, says: “Christmas carols are timeless and really make the season, but they can get a bit same-y year after year.” Fraser is popularising a new style of carol-singing. He takes carols that are already well loved and familiar, but creates new versions of them to be sung by Albion’s twelve unaccompanied voices. Fraser, a busy composer now based in the Peaks, explains: “I call the process reimagining, because I aim to preserve the essence of the carol, even though I am creating new harmonies and a new texture around it.” He usually begins by playing or singing through the carol twenty or thirty times until he knows it intimately. He then experiments with harmonies and ideas at the piano “until the solution comes into my head, and

the music is often fully formed before I begin to write it down.” Then the choir gets to work: an unusual group, they sing without a conductor and do not use sheet music, so every singer has to memorise it before they can begin to perform. Last December, the group released its first CD, ‘Salutation’, a compilation

of Fraser’s new Christmas carol arrangements. They were delighted with the positive reaction of listeners across the world. This Christmas, the singers have high hopes for the new versions of classics O Holy Night and The Coventry Carol that they are preparing to perform next week. “We hope that these new carols will continue to

travel the globe and, in a small but interesting way, that they’ll put our corner of the world on the map for contributing something new to Christmas.” Albion’s 2013 Christmas concerts take place on Friday 20 December (Holy Trinity Church, Millhouses, and Saturday 21 December, Tideswell. TADDINGTON & DISTRICT W.I.

Colour, Contrasts and Culture was the theme for a talk by Trevor Ride at our November meeting. The Taddington Group of ladies and a guest were enthralled by Trevor’s ’Passage to India’ taking in all the wonderful colours of the dresses, flowers, the markets and buildings, the contrast in the living standards of the rich, the middle class and the poor, and the culture of the people. How would we react if cows were allowed to roam freely on Spring Gardens and Bakewell market? But the people just accept this as a normal way of life and woe betide anyone who may think differently. The opulence of the cathedrals

and mosques and the tourist hotels contrasted so greatly with the shelters of the poor people – they certainly could not be called houses. What was evident was that everyone appeared to be smiling and happy and did not seem to want anything better. We gasped when Trevor said that they had journeyed across India by train, having seen pictures of the crowded Indian transport. However, we were assured that in Trevor and Tony’s case the train that they travelled on was quite luxurious, with cabin attendants who lived in a cupboard-like room at the end of the train corridor but really enjoyed their work in

spite of their cramped conditions. We were surprised to hear that Hinduism is the main religion of India with Islam next and Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism being followed by only a small percentage of people. Trevor was thanked for his wonderful presentation and as an encore showed us a video of a temple which was dedicated to rodents. Unbelievable!!! As we will be going out for our Christmas meal in December and there is no meeting in January, the Taddington W.I. wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.
