Lunch Date For WW2 Veteran

On Friday 6th June Albert Keir and his wife Dorothy joined residents of Hoyle Court and Dagnall Gardens and tenants of other Dales Housing properties to a lunch at a packed Hoyle Court to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the DDay landings. Mr Keir of Wyecroft Court was just 19 years old when on 6th June 1944 he helped ferry Royal Navy landing crafts back and forth through constant gunfire to Cherbourg beach where they deposited American troops. He said: “Of course you were scared, anyone who says otherwise is not telling the truth, you just get on with the job you were told to do. There were an awful lot of ships involved, the sea was black with ships and the sky was black with planes. Bullets and shells were flying all over place. I am proud of what we did. It was our job to deliver these troops and that is what we did”. Albert also delivered floating Mulberry Docks to France aboard HMS Potentilla, a flower class corvette. Albert was invited to speak about his service in the 2nd World War and showed off his Normandy

quiz had been organised by them. Mr Keir just missed winning the quiz by 1 point. Albert joined other WW2 veterans in the Weymouth at War celebrations over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd June and took part in the annual veterans parade there.

Recent months have witnessed a great deal of activity at St. Anne’s where a major refurbishment project has been carried out on the organ. The nineteenthcentury instrument has been completely refurbished with the console rebuilt and upgraded to give a greater range of voices whilst all the pipes have been cleaned, repaired and re-installed to work properly for the first time for many years. To celebrate the completion of this work an Organ Recital, to be given by Daniel Hyde, will take place on October 3rd at 7.30pm in St. Anne’s. Daniel, a native of Baslow, is Informator Choristarum, Organist and Tutorial Fellow in Music at Magdalen College, Oxford. At Magdalen, Daniel is responsible for the recruitment, training and development of the Choir which sings six services a week during term time. A former chorister and organ scholar of Durham Cathedral, Daniel was Assistant Organist at Perth Cathedral, Western Australia, before taking up the organ scholarship to King’s College, Cambridge. Upon graduation, Daniel was appointed as Director of Music at Jesus College, Cambridge. During his time there he was responsible for overseeing the development of the College’s two choirs, and was responsible for the design and installation of a new organ in the chapel. More recently he was engaged to play the organ for the Royal Garter celebrations at Windsor Castle, and gave the recital to mark the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Royal College of Organists. He has been a concerto soloist with the BBC Philharmonic and the Britten Sinfonia, with whom he has performed the Poulenc Concerto a number of times, and has recorded the Hindemith Concerto to great critical acclaim. A regular accompanist to the BBC Singers on Radio Three, he has appeared at the BBC Proms on numerous occasions, and made his solo debut there in the 2010 season, performing Bach’s Canonic Variations on the organ of the Royal Albert Hall. A limited number of tickets are available for this recital at £10 including refreshments. Please contact Richard Powell on 01246 583375 or 07751889502 for further information.

lison Bell and Jane Wyse have the world at their fingertips - not just through the vast choice of holidays they can offer, but from a wealth of knowledge gleaned through their own extensive globetrotting experiences. Attention to detail is all important, whether it’s first-hand knowledge of destinations, keeping up with the latest regulations – or securing the best price. Add to that their willingness to go the extra mile to make clients’ holidays truly special and it’s no wonder that satisfied customers keep returning to Bakewell Travel. Their personal service has won them a loyal customer base from Bakewell and the surrounding villages, the Hope Valley, Buxton, Matlock and even Sheffield. “We are the only independent travel agent in this area,” says Jane. “We help people to get the best deal and it costs them no more than arranging holidays themselves on the internet and taking up their own valuable time searching the web. We care about our clients and will provide the little extras – from printing boarding passes and giving advance passenger information to providing luggage tags. “We sell holidays from every Tour Operator and we will search all of them to find the best deals for you. We are competitive against the internet – Working with Alison and Jane has also helped holidaymakers to steer clear of certain bureaucratic pitfalls. One client avoided problems in Turkey

after changes to visa regulations – which a holiday company website had not made clear. Alison and Jane are both keen travellers with first-hand experiences of many destinations. Recent travels have taken Jane to Morocco and Alison to Dubai. Dubai has long been a popular haunt of the rich and famous and of couples in search of a luxurious sunshine break. But it is now increasingly appealing to families and Alison put it to the test by taking her own children on a trip there. Alison adds, “Dubai is good for autumn and winter sunshine. It’s closer than the Caribbean – and doesn’t carry the hurricane risk – and it’s not much further than the Canaries for some sunshine. Jane was keen to visit Morocco and sample its culture in order to give potential visitors a taste of what to expect. “My trip included Marrakech, Essaouira and the Atlas Mountains and it was fascinating,” she says. Morocco is becoming a very popular destination and the culture appeals to a lot of people”. Whatever your needs for a holiday are, just talk to Alison or Jane who can arrange everything for you. “We would like to thank our existing clients for their continued support and welcome new clients, assuring them of our commitment to quality and service provided.”
