WE BRAVED THE SHAVE!

Loretta Storey (left) and Lorraine Furness (right and inset). Photographs by John Hargreaves Hi folks, the deed is done, we braved the shave! We both found it emotional, a little nerve wracking and oddly, liberating. But on a more serious note, it was done for two very worthy causes, McMillan Cancer Support and Ashgate Hospice. Both these Charities provide much needed support not

only for the Cancer sufferer, but also their families & friends. Without this support everyday life would be so much harder for all concerned. We would like to thank everybody for their generous donations, so far we have raised an amazing £1,433.64 with more unknown donations to be collected. Thank you, thank you,

thank you. Our just giving page will be open for another 4 weeks after this event, so PLEASE if you can make a donation, large or small, every penny counts. www.virginmoneygiving.com /letandlunsheadshave The Peak Advertiser have kindly said they would take any donations, large or small, at their offices in

Bakewell. Lastly but not least we would like to thank John Hargreaves for his wonderful photos, Paula for shaving our heads and Leanne for the smiley faces. Hope you like the before, during and after photos. Thank you again. Loretta Storey and Lorraine Furness (nee Needham)

Matlock and District Hard of Hearing Club Special guests were welcomed at the Strawberry Tea on the 4th July. Representatives from the Bring Joy Foundation, based in Warrington, Cheshire, presented the club with a very generous donation of £500, towards the cost of outings and speakers. A photographer was present to record this and other aspects of the afternoon's meeting. Tony Ellingham, from

Derbyshire County Council spoke about changes in funding for deaf and hearing services which could be cut by 40%, a massive amount, by 2020. However, this is all under review at present, with decisions expected in September. The BJF representative explained the work done by this charity to bring enjoyment into the lives of deaf and elderly people, who

25Years

can otherwise feel isolated. Roland Corfield, chairman, thanked them all for coming and explaining things to the club and answering questions about their concerns. Thanks were also given to Ann Sullivan, who put the text on the screen. The guests joined in to help serve the strawberries and cream, scones and tea to members, and also enjoyed some

themselves. Payments were taken for the day trip to Llandudno on the 18th July, and members were told that there would not be a meeting in August, due to work being carried out in the Imperial Rooms. The next meeting will be on the 5th September, at 2pm. in the Imperial Rooms, Matlock, when Ashley Franklin will give a talk, entitled 'My Derbyshire Life'.

FIDLER TAYLOR v SCARGILL MANN CHARITY CRICKET MATCH REPORT

It was a warm summers evening at Darley Dale Cricket Club when we (Fidler Taylor) and Scargill Mann went head to head to battle it out for the Derbyshire Air Ambulance Charity Cricket Match. There was relief on our faces after the final ball was bowled and we claimed victory after a competitive and entertaining match. The embarrassment of losing may have resulted in an empty office the next day. Captains Thomas Blake (batting first) and Anthony Taylor led their teams out for the first innings along with umpires Chris Loeber and Glynn Yates who tried to keep everything under control, apart from Tom’s hair of course, which may have been the reason he was distracted and was out for the 2nd ball of the innings and in turn a duck. The spectators were treated to delicious homemade pizzas supplied by Blood Brothers Stoves (with all donations going directly to charity) and were kept hydrated by the cricket club bar (with a share of profits topping up the fund). The raffle was a huge success, with a framed signed Michael Vaughan shirt and bat on offer as well as Derbyshire Cricket and Haddon Hall tickets. A total of over £700 (final amount TBC) was raised in total – a brilliant effort. Questionable tactics were highly evident as Adrian Fidler, our ‘one ball wonder’ started the second innings with a dummy underarm bowl. Although he wasn’t able to take a wicket, our cricketing skills managed to edge a win but with Scargill Mann’s Ben Arnold taking the well-deserved Man of the Match award. A huge thank you to everyone who supported this event, especially our sponsors

(Kick Off Sport, Owzat Cricket Supplies, Peach Tree Landscape & Design, Potter & Co Solicitors, Robinsons Longcliffe Ltd, Storage 4U and a special thank you to the individuals who helped Tom organise along the way;

Simon Cotterill, Jamie Watts and Ray Shannon and Anthony Taylor and his Scargill Mann team for being great sports. We look forward to the return fixture next year and will display the cup prominently in our office until

then. By the way, did we mention we won??!! Our year of fundraising continues at a pace, full diary of events can be found on our website with fundraising, to now, totalling almost £6,500.

PEAK DISTRICT CHALLENGE The Peak District Challenge is back for its fourth year, with even more challenging courses to help to raise even more money for charity. Last year, people in the peaks raised over £35,000 for its partner charities. We hope to smash this in 2016 to give local charities a much needed boost! This August, participants can join us on one of five routes: 10km, 25km, 50km, 75km or 100km. To enter, participants can choose their challenge, pick a charity and get training. The Silver (75km) and Gold Ultra (100km) challenges will begin on 19th August, with contestants walking throughout the night to finish their challenge within the 24 hour target. The Back Before Dark Challenge (10km) will also start on 19th August with participants aiming to get back to base camp before the sun sets. Copper (25km) and

Bronze (50km) will begin in the morning on Saturday 20th August. Coppers will aim to finish within a nine hour time limit and Bronzes within 12 hours. Pushing entrants to their limit, the Gold Ultra challenge is a UTMB qualifying race and has an ascent of over 3200m. Each race will take participants to some of the most beautiful points in the Peak District, whilst raising money for great causes. The main partner charity this year is S.A.L.V.E. International: a Manchester and Ugandan based charity that works with children and their families to help the children get off the streets in Uganda. Money raised will be helping their new programme to support children addicted to aeroplane fuel (which is cheaper than food and suppresses appetite) to get off

the ground. Participants can choose to donate or fundraise for S.A.L.V.E., or to fundraise for a different partner charity of their own choice. Each year, we need lots of volunteers to help us out in HQ preparing home made food for the entrants and supporting our runner and walkers at check points. Please get in contact to come and help us to make it a fantastic event. The challenges will start and finish in Hathersage, and we encourage participants and supporters to get public transport to reduce their impact on the environment. For more information and to sign up as an entrant or volunteer, please do to w w w. p e a k - d i s t r i c t challenge.com or call 07984369876 Main entries close on 7th August – so not long left to get your boots on and sign up.
