Imagine accelerating from 0 to 175 km/h in a mere seven seconds… without an engine. Speed skiing is the fastest non-motorized sport in the world and daredevil athletes from around the globe will gather in Sun Peaks Resort for the 21st Annual Velocity Challenge, March 4 to 7, 2010. The 2010 Subaru Velocity Challenge, presented by Zimmer Autosport, is one of the longest running speed skiing events in the world and the only event of its kind in North America. What began as a grassroots ski race over 20 years ago has become a world renowned FIS World Cup Speed Skiing event. Skiers from 10 countries will converge on Sun Peaks with their 8 foot skis and rubber suits to take on the extremely steep and treacherous Headwalls Speed Skiing Track. The 300 metre course boasts a 55 per cent grade and has proven to be one of the most challenging tracks on the planet.
“While most speed skiing tracks in Europe are smooth and concave allowing racers to see the whole track during their run, the Headwalls Track is convex and has several rolls in it,” says event organizer Adam Earle. “Racers only see the first 50 metres of the track before it falls away. It’s pretty wild when racers hit a blind knoll at 175 km/h; it almost becomes a free fall.” A fantastic spectator event, visitors can purchase a foot passenger ticket for $16 to ride the Sunburst Express Chairlift and watch the racers as they push off the crest of the mountain and race down Headwalls this March.
