T

HE mother of an eight year old girl who was allegedly raped and sodomised at the age of six by Xolile Tose (33) of Motherwell is pleading with South Africans to help her innocent child face life again.

Tose is currently on trial in the Port Elizabeth High Court. His bail application had been denied. He has pleaded not guilty. The unemployed woman (30), who cannot be identified to protect the identity of the child, is struggling to survive since the ordeal on 16 December 2011. She is currently renting a shack in Motherwell. The told PE Express Indaba, that she needs assistance to help her child live life to the full,

like any other child. The girl suffered severe physical injury to her private parts and has to wear a colostomy bag as a result of the horrific rape. Her mother said the girl was also asked to leave the school she was attending owing to the smell of the colostomy bag. “This is an allegation the Department of Education refutes. But the child is not at school. The records show that she last attended school in March 2013,” said Children’s rights advocate Petros Majola. “We, the caring members of society need to do something to restore this child’s childhood. We need to find ways to get her a home, with sanitation, water, safety and most of all love,” said the Justice Department’s Intermediary, who spoke to PE Express as a mother, and a caring South African resident.

Tose allegedly raped the child at knifepoint. Despite the presence of the intermediary, the child was not able to testify in court yesterday. “The child has not developed intellectually and psychologically since the ordeal. She is eight but has the intelligence of a 5-year-old,” said clinical psychologist Karen Joyce Andrews on why the little rape victim could not testify. “We’re here to support the child. Harsh sentences must be imposed on those who brutally attack our children and they must rot in jail. Whatever happens to the accused, we’ll make sure all the prescripts of the law are followed in order to protect the child, said Director of Khula Community Development Project Majola. He added, “But we’ll also make sure that she is not failed by the state in terms of enjoying life to the fullest after this experience,”

According to Majola, the child deserves to be treated with dignity and respect as enshrined in Section 10 of the Constitution of the RSA Act 108 of 1996 as amended. Congress of the People (COPE) members have been at the court since Monday to show their support to the victim and her mother. “We hope the justice department would ensure that the accused is heavily punished for ruining the poor child’s life, said Cope Cllr Nobenguni Magwaca. “We know God said thou shall not kill. But our government should hang people who do things like these. They don’t deserve to be among people in our communities,” said IDAMASA President Bishop Sandile Jika, adding that as the church they had been praying ceaselessly for the child. The case is continuing this week.

Suspended SADTU President Thobile Ntola speaks out NCEBA DLADLA THE suspended South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) president Thobile Ntola is not taking his suspension lying down, he told PE Express Indaba last week.

OMBUDSMAN

He was spotted at a Numsa march from the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton to the Vuyisile Mini Square in the PE City Centre last Wednesday as part of the Union Federation Cosatu’s rolling mass action against the oppressions of the working class 20 years after the advent of democracy in the country. Ntola, who was seconded to the National Trade Union Federation COSATU position when he was a principal at Chubekile High School in Kwazakhele, said he might be down but was by no means out. He was suspended last August for allegedly giving suspended COSATU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi a platform to speak

during the SADTU event in the Eastern Cape. COSATU’s argument was that a suspended official could not be allowed to speak at a public platform organised by one of COSATU’s affiliates, SADTU. “My suspension should be viewed as a ploy to remove me (from office) by those who want to impose their views on the working class to lead,” said Ntola. According to Ntola, the union federation adopted radical programmes at their last congress which he and other suspended leaders want to see implemented. “Those who were for the implementation of those resolutions aimed at the progress of the working class in COSATU were, however, dealt with,” said Ntola, adding that he was certain people with their “own selfish agenda” would not succeed. “Now that the workers have decided to take their case into their own hands, those against the workers will not succeed. The workers will be victorious!,” said Ntola.

NUMSA marches on for workers’ rights NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) marched from the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton to the Vuyisile Mini Square in the PE City Centre last Wednesday as part of the Union Federation Cosatu’s rolling mass action. Numsa President Andrew Chirwa handed a memorandum on behalf of 341 000 members to the Department of Labour’s official Mzimkhulu Papu. Papu is expected to deliver the memorandum to the National Labour Department in Pretoria via the office of the Provincial Labour Department in East London. The memorandum contained a myriad of demands directed at government and employers who are accused of colluding to continue the oppression of the working class 20 years after the advent of democracy in the country. “Twenty years after democracy we (the workers) are still not free. Some of our leaders who taught us that only nationalisation of mines and land will Numsa’s Rolling Mass Action started last week. PHOTO:

deliver us from the poverty and inequality we’ve been subjected to by apartheid laws, now speak a different language. They speak in tongues,” said Chirwa. He added that those who thought the workers had arrived in the biblical promised land should leave the workers to struggle on their own. Workers, he said, refuse to be used as a gateway to parliament by some members of the union-federation leadership. According to Chirwa, Numsa rejected the Youth-wage subsidy. Youth instead, should be encouraged to get better education and skills required by the job-market while their parents’ job security was ensured. “The Youth wage subsidy will not help create jobs. It has not helped anywhere in the world,” he said. Numsa instead, called on government to give job seekers a basic income grant so that they could have transport money and food as they continued to seek decent jobs.

The suspects had already fled the scene when police arrived. “Police recovered several empty cartridges on the scene,’ said W/O Gwe, adding that the motive for the killing was unknown. “We urge anyone with information that could lead to the possible arrest of the suspect in this murder case to please assist police in their investigations,” said W/O Gwe, adding that anyone with information can call New Brighton SAPS at 0 041 394 7315.

According to W/O Gwavu, the suspects they arrested ranged in ages between 18 and 63 years. They were all expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate Court soon.

We needed this kind of assistance in an area where parents are mostly unemployed and struggling to pay R80 a month fees,” said NU12 B’s Bongolethu Educare Centre Principal Vuyiswa Zenani, adding that there would now be enough food for the children. Xhanti said that while government did not have enough funds to assist every department and individual’s needs, her timely deliberations with the Social Development Department and Special Programmes Nelson Mandela Bay District Manager, Thembile Ngqabayi, made it possible for these very important centres to receive the required assistance. All set for Ironman SA competition - 4 to 6 April LIZEKA TANDWA

OVER 80 000 spectators are expected to descend in Port Elizabeth over the course of the Ironman weekend from April 4 to 6.

Ironman organisers say this doesn’t even take into account the number of spectators who support on the outer lying sections of the course. Ironman Coordinator, Michael Flanagan, said with the increased number of athletes both locally and internationally taking part in the race, they expect an increase in spectator numbers as most athletes travel with friends and

families. “It is not uncommon to see spectators setting up gazebos the night before the race to get a prime spot, particularly on Marine Drive. Over 80% of athletes come from outside of the Eastern Cape,” he said. Flanagan said they had a very strong professional line up this year which should make for an exciting race. In the men’s field, defending champion, Ronnie Schildknecht, returns along with South Africa’s hopeful, James Cunnama. In addition the 2005 Ironman World Champion, Faris Al-Sultan, comes back, along with professional newly - fledged , Kyle Buckingham, who was placed 1st

in his age group at the Ironman World Championship in 2013. Bas Diederen who came third in 2013 is also back,” said Flanagan. Apart from the professional athletes, sports stars such as Ollie Le Roux, Joel Stransky, Werner Swanepoel, Andre Nel and Jacques Rudolph will all also be participating. “The most significant change this year is the change in the course. The swim course has been changed from two laps of 1.9km to a rectangular course of 3.8km. The rectangle flanks the coastline from Hobie Beach to Kings Beach. “Athletes will now also start in three separate waves as opposed to the previous single mass

start. The bike course has been changed from three laps of 60km to two laps of 90km. The new bike course will take athletes into a whole new section of Port Elizabeth, incorporating some breathtaking scenery. “Athletes will go up Walmer Boulevard as in previous years but instead of turning around at Sea View, they will continue and turn right into Old Sea View Road, go past Lake Farm on to Kragga Kamma Road before arriving at Maitlands via De Stades Road. From Seaview Road they will rejoin the old course and head back down to Summerstrand via Sardinia Bay Road and Marine Drive,” he said.

Lion City on top of SAFA NMB SAB log table SELBY MADIKANE HAVING beaten Despatch Pioneers 3-0 at Motherwell NU2 Stadium on Saturday, Lion are the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League leaders. Dabaza is the new EC Jnr-Flyweight Champion

NCEBA DLADLA NEW kid on the block, Mzwabantu Dabaza of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage made history when he beat the experienced East Londoner, Lutho Nkonki for the vacant Eastern Cape Junior Flyweight championshop at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday. Dabaza, who came to the ring with a professional record of 10 fights, 8-wins and 5Kos with 2 losses, stopped Nkonki(19-10-4KOs-and 9 losses) after seven blistering rounds. “The referee (Andile Matika) stopped the fight in the seventh round after realising that Nkonki was taking too much punishment

from my boy,” said an overjoyed Dabaza’s mentor, Louis Phillip. Phillip who trains his boxers at the MiniGym in John Street, Uitenhage was pretty sure that fit-as-a-fiddle Dabaza would be crowned the new champion, come the fight night. Phillip admitted however, that he did not expect the classic and stylish way in which his protege was going to annex the title from the East London foe in front of his vociferous crowd. “I thought we had over-trained. The boy was 47.35 Kg at the official weigh-in in East London, way below the 48.98kg Junior-Flyweight limit.

“But this is the title that was the launchpad for the careers of great boxing champions, Vuyani Nene and Mzukisi Sikali. We had to bring it home - where it belongs,” said Phillip proudly. Nene went on to become the SA Junior flyweight and ABU Junior Bantamweight titlist whereas Sikali continued to become the WBU Junior-flyweight and IBO world Junior Bantamweight champion respectively. Phillip said next stop would be for Dabaza to challenge for the national Junior-flyweight title held by Thabiso Moorosi of the Free State in order to complete the task of his predecessors - that of bringing back the lost glory to Nelson Mandela Bay boxing.

The future looks bright for Mzwabantu Dabaza.
