Successful surgery for baby born with deformed head NCEBA DLADLA

W

HEN Nomonde Ntoni of Red Location, New Brighton, spoke to PE Express Indaba in November last year about the plight of her baby boy born with a deformed head, she had no answers but a lot of faith. Less than three months later the situation has changed dramatically after people intervened to ensure that her six-month old baby Anokholo, which aptly means “They have faith”, undergoes surgery for his condition. The operation, which was done last week at the Red Cross Hospital, was a great success and Nomonde has faith that her child will grow up normally. The operation was the result of the tireless efforts of Ward 15 Councillor Kholisile Frans and Nelson Mandela Bay Public Health Executive Director Dr Mamisa Chabula-Nxiweni. “As a councillor and representative of government I could not watch and do nothing whilst a member of my constituency was suffering. I spoke to Dr Chabula-Nxiweni who wrote a letter to Dora Nginza hospital about what could be done to alleviate the situation little Anokholo was in,” said Cllr Frans. He added that they could not understand why Anokholo was discharged from hospital in the first place - in the condition that he was in. PE Express Indaba reported the story on 28 November 2012 of Anokholo’s mother who queried Dora Nginza hospital’s wisdom in letting her go home with the baby. She was told the baby could not be kept in the hospital because he was not sick and was not taking any medication. Members of the community do not understand Nomonde’s child and his deformed head. They allegedly accuse

her of a number of things like being punished for drinking too much alcohol, having sinned or plainly being cursed. Owing to the stress caused by these accusations by neighbours Nomonde has suffered a light stroke which left

her mouth and other facial parts twisted. “I have learnt to understand that this is my child and to allow God to take charge. I am used to this child and will accept whatever it is that God wants for this child. I wish people can let me live in peace with my child,” said a sobbing

Nomonde in November. And Nomonde’s faith has paid off. A Jubilant Nomonde spoke to PE Express Indaba on Monday from Cape Town. “The baby’s fine but not yet discharged from hospital,” said a jubilant Nomonde.

“All I want to do is to thank Cllr Frans for being there for me and my baby,” she said. Anokholo’s father Nkosinathi Ntoni was also happy that the operation was such a success and that the baby’s condition was fine.

IPTS system marks another milestone Nelson Mandela Bay marked another milestone on Saturday when 60 taxis were handed over to the municipality by the taxi industry as part of the government driven NMB Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS). The handover forms part of the IPTS agreement between the municipality and the taxi industry to allow for ease of operation for the buses on certain routes where there is an oversupply of taxis. The handover also marked a jour-

ney dating back five years when the decision taken by the NMB and the local taxi industry to partner in what is the first Integrated Public Transport System in the Eastern Cape. The handover reaffirmed the unshaken commitment of the taxi industry to the IPTS project. The CBD to Summerstrand taxi route has been identified as it has an overflow of transport. The removal of some taxis from this route is to give buses space to operate. The logic behind this move is that stakeholders who are part of the same project can-

not compete for the same route as this poses operational complications for both parties concerned. All the taxis were taken to the municipality’s fleet management depot in Diaz Road where they will be stored for 12 months. As part of the agreement, each taxi owner will be compensated for any loss of legitimate income. The NMB and the Project team will work on the process of re-skilling the drivers and conductors who were working on the taxis affected. Some are expected to be absorbed within

the IPTS process while some will be placed in different areas related to the project. The skilling process, which began on Monday this week, involves educating the individuals about the intricacies of the taxi industry and customer care. The process of the handover of taxis has been a voluntary process by the taxi owners. Nomvuyo Mpambani, a taxi owner, said she was elated about the arrangement as it ensured that everyone was accommodated. “This definitely is the beginning of

big things to come and the arrangement we have with the municipality is quite fair,” she said. “We can only hope for the best going forward, the IPTS is definitely here to stay and we support it all the way,” said Mpambani. Another taxi owner Ryno Plaatjies said this was welcomed as this would revolutionise the taxi industry in the metro. “But we have trust in the municipality and we have a strong belief that the IPTS is definitely going to succeed,” Plaatjies said.

Behind the scenes with Public Servant News Network ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL THE Public Servant News Network is a social network phenomenon that has grown exceptionally and enjoys a following of nearly 30 000 users in PE only, and 120 000 page users in total across South Africa. Many Port Elizabethans follow information posted on the Public Servant News Network (PSNN) Port Elizabeth on a daily basis to be on top of what is happening in and around the city. The PSNN is run and managed countrywide by one person. Though he prefers to remain anonymous and to be known only as Public Servant, he gave the PE Express some insight into his very successful pages.

How many people work behind the scenes to moderate comments and posts?

“All admin and updates of the 12 updates pages and 10 crime pages are done by one person - I am a very private person and worried about my family and my safety so I prefer to remain anonymous. On the PE page only, I have a dedicated group of people called the PSNN PEAS (Public Servant News Network Port Elizabeth Appreciation Squad). They are doing a stellar job in uplifting the PE area. They provide coffee, refreshments and food to our cops and emergency personnel once a month. Together with the members of the PSNN PE members, they have assisted in feeding and clothing almost 2000 members of the Chris Hani informal settlement in New Brighton after the big fire which destroyed everything these people had. Soon, I plan to have a team like this in each area of SA. ”

Is it a 24-hour job to moderate the page?

It is a 24-hour job especially with the crime updates. If criminals are attempting to highjack motorists by stone throwing, etc, then it is beneficial for me to post about it as soon as possible. Apart from the serious stuff, there are always people, whom the online community refer to as “Trolls”, causing problems on the various pages. I find that people whom I have banned for swearing, or being racist often make fake profiles and cause trouble so these “fires” have to be put out quickly. These “trolls” take up a lot of my time which I could use to assist other people.”

You have had some bad press about racist remarks left by users, which you feel strongly about.

Any comments regarding that issue?

“Yes, well it hurts to be called a racist and worse when people call one of my pages racist or judgemental as it goes against everything I stand for. I must say that the man and his friends who started the race war on PSNN PE did so with ulterior motives. The awesome thing about that was that the same day the racism story came out in a tabloid, two other newspapers reported the good deeds that the page and the PSNN PEAS were doing at the Chris Hani Informal Settlement. Racism is a very touchy subject in South Africa, but if I have to broadcast the race of a criminal if it will assist in catching them, I will.”

You have nearly 29 000 “Likes” on the PE page. What is your recipe for making the page so popular? The PE page is very successful - I think that it is because it is such a small area covered by so many people. I try to be fair and equal to everyone and try to take care of things personally as much as possible. I guess that it boils down to good content. I do not sensationalise anything and try to post only facts. Sensationalism and especially online arguments generate much more “likes” but I prefer to keep my network factual and respectful.

We know you want to remain anonymous, but just tell us one thing about yourself, such as are you a pensioner or is the PSNN your part-time “job”?

I am far from being a pensioner - Being Public Servant is my “full time job” but I do other jobs as well to help to pay the bills. The bad thing is that when I am doing these other jobs, I am not able to do what I love to do, which is to assist people.

What is your ultimate goal with the page? Are you also involved with charity work?

The ultimate goal would be to uplift and inform every South African citizen. I have huge plans for self-sustainable low cost housing and instead of giving hand outs, I would like to give people a “hand up” in the form of education and skills. This will benefit each and every South African.

Any other interesting information about PSNN that you would like to share with the PE Express readers? The Public Servant News Network has over 120 000 people using it and is moderated by a young, yet wise, gentleman who really loves this country and its people. I only wish the best for everyone. Thanks to all the loyal fans who have made the PSNN a success.

Policeman arrested for rape NCEBA DLADLA DISCIPLINARY action will be taken against a policeman who was arrested for allegedly raping a 32 year-old woman in KwaNobuhle last week. Constable Manene Robert Williams (39) who is stationed at KwaNobuhle Police Station, has appeared in the District court and was granted R2 000 bail after allegedly raping the woman in the police station cells on Sunday 3 February.

It is believed that the accused asked the woman, whose name cannot be mentioned to protect her identity, to follow him to the cells - where he allegedly raped her. Uitenhage police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said the reason the complainant came to the station was to make some enquiries. Other than that, she said, the evidence was still a bit sketchy. Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills has, however, condemned the action by the accused law enforcement officer. “It is always very disappointing when alle-

gations of this nature are made against our police officials, because it is expected of our members to uphold the law and to set an example to others,” said Brig. Mills. She added: “Although allegations of this nature tarnish our reputation, we do not hesitate to arrest our own and ensure that justice is done.” She intimated that a disciplinary action including suspension was possible in a case like this. Const. Williams was remanded in custody while investigations continue. He will appear in court again on 4 March.

Man stoned to death after rape BETTIE GILIOMEE A MAN who allegedly raped a woman was stoned to death by members of the public on Sunday. According to W/O Thembi Gwe, police spokes-

person, the woman (34) was sleeping next to her boyfriend in their house in Gxilishe Street in the Govan Mbeki informal settlement when she was allegedly raped by the burglar at about 4.30am. She initially thought it was her friend with whom she had intercourse. When she realised it was the burglar she woke her friend and started

screaming. Community members caught the alleged rapist, Vuyani Natinisi (25), and stoned him to death. He was apparently also beaten with sticks. According to Gwe he died on the scene. The police are investigating murder. No arrests have yet been made.

It’s bon voyage to Lt Col Priscilla Naidu after promotion NCEBA DLADLA “TO serve and protect is a calling in the life of each and every police official and those officials who respond to that calling with passion and pride are prepared to serve wherever they are needed.” This was said in a statement by Uitenhage police spokesperson Lietenant Colonel Priscila Naidu who will be leaving Nelson Mandela Bay to start in a new position in the Northern Cape Province. Lt Col Naidu was promoted on 1 February as the Provincial Commander: Media Liaison. She is expected to resume her duties in Kimberly from 11 March. “It is with mixed emotions that I will be leaving,” said Lt Col Naidu who has established very good working relations and rapport with the local media since she came to Uitenhage in 2006. Naidu, who is a shining example of the type of communications officer that journalists like to work with, boasts 30 years’ experience in the service she joined in 1983. According to Naidu, the police service was the only profession offered to Indian women outside of teaching at the time. Naidu quit her studies towards an education degree at the University of Durban Westville after six months and headed straight to the police college. Coming out of college, she started working in Pinetown until she got a promotion as a Media Liaison Officer in Uitenhage in 2006. Said Naidu, “When I came to this area I did not know anybody. It was a whole new challenge but I am happy that I came and established good working relations with the media. She is married to former policeman Kevin Naidu and is the mother of a 21 year-old son Emile, a NMMU third-year Civil Engineering student. She said she wouldl cherish her moments in the Bay. “I would like to thank all of you whom I have dealt with in the past seven years. I hope I have served you well in bringing you up to date reporting on issues and news relating to Uitenhage and Humansdorp clusters,” she said.

Police recorded many arrests in the Motherwell cluster NCEBA DLADLA THE SAPS Motherwell cluster has recorded many arrests in its attempt to prevent all forms of contact crime at the weekend. “We launched a high density operation this past weekend and made sure sure that the criminals’ reign of terror comes to an end,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe. The focus was on high police visibility in areas such as KwaZakhele, Motherwell, New Brighton, KwaDwesi, Kamvelihle, Swartkops and Kinkelbos. This weekend alone police managed to arrest 139 suspects for drunk and disorderly behaviour, while another 16 were arrested for drunken driving. Six people were arrested for assault whereas eight were nabbed for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and a further eight for possession of dagga. One suspect was arrested for malicious damage to property while a juvenile was arrested for possession of an illegal firearm. Cluster Commander Major General Funeka Siganga praised members of the SAPS for implementing the operation and executing their tasks with aplomb. “Criminals beware, your reign of terror is coming to an end. We’ll arrest you and seize all your illegal weapons,” said Major Gen. Siganga. Similar operations should be expected fairly soon to ensure that the Motherwell cluster is safe, according to W/O Gwe.

Lets talk about Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculoses

440 000 cases of multidrug resistant tuberculosis are identified each year causing at least 150 000 deaths from a disease that is curable. Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) is a form of tuberculosis that is resistant to both isoniazied (INH) & rifampicin (RMP) two of the first line drugs which areused for th treatment of tuberculosis. MDR TB has been a particular concern among HIV persons. Some of the factors that have contributed to the number of cases of MDR TB both in general and among HIV infected individuals are delayed diagnosis and delayed determination of drug susceptibility, which may take several weeks. MDRTB are outcomes of non-compliance. TB is a communicable disease which affects anyone young and old. It increases day by day due to HIV infection, late clinic presentatin and high defaulter rate. When one is diagnosed s/he has to stick to the treatment for a specific period of time e.g. - TB treatment is six months - MDR treatment is two years and after that is monthly monitoring for a year Prevention 1. Taking treatment regularly The most important thing a person may do is to take their medication exactly as prescribed by their health care provider. No doses should be missed and treatment should be stopped only when told to do so by a health care provider. Patients should tell their health care providers if they are having trouble in taking the medication. 2. Opening of windows and doors despite bad weather 3. UK School builds playing field for Mboniselo Primary SELBY MADIKANE HUNDREDS of parents, community members, Education Development Officer (EDO) Chris Muller, Calabash Trust officials, learners and educators graced the function when a sports field built by a school from the United Kingdom, Chaucer School, was handed over to the Mboniselo Primary School in Motherwell NU 1. There were lots of festivities with entertainment by the Mboniselo Primary School Choir, a cultural group, modern dancers and the Grade R Choir. Speaking on behalf of Chaucer School, its Assistant Head Gillian Ward said that they were committed to help the Mboniselo Primary School as they were aware of this needy school’s plight.

School Headmaster Thembalethu Hopa thanked Chaucer staff and the students who dedicated their time to help the less fortunate school. Hopa also extended his gratitude to Calabash Trust Director Paul Miedema, who together with his staff Ntshantsha Madinda, Nelson Sebezela and Mongezi Lumka, played a major role towards the success of this project. “Our school teams now have a playing field and I am sure that their morale is boosted as we are speaking. These teams used to play away their home games. On behalf of the school I would like to express my special thanks to Chaucer School for always lending a helping hand. “Very special thanks go to Paul Miedema and his team of Calabash Trust for always supporting us through thick and thin. We look forward to a continued relationship between Chaucer School and Calabash Trust,” said Hopa.

They have started a social club which they want to turn into an NGO which is aimed at adopting an orphanage to support with its needs such as cleaning, cooking, washing and ironing. “We want other learners in nearby schools to join us,” said Nxakala, the Chairperson.

Maths and science learners excel with new programme NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University hosted the Engen Maths and Science Schools (EMSS) Award Ceremony at the NMMU North Campus in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth last Saturday. The event highlighted the success of the programme Engen started with the Department of Transport in partnership with the Department of Education 27 years ago to close the skills shortage gap. The NMMU joined the strategic partnership in 2008 and has been playing a pivotal role in this programme which caters for learners in grade 10 to 12. The 2012 class at NMMU achieved a 100% pass rate, 40% higher than the provincial average, said Engen’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) manager, Khanyisa Balfour. According to Balfour, the pro-

gramme will continue for the next five years and is successful in improving the learners’ maths and science matric results. The programme is supporting the learners at many levels and they are given lessons of a high standard by highly skilled educators provided by the department of education. Learners who pass matric potentially qualify for further education and training as well as skilled employment in fields such as civil engineering, maritime and chemical engineering. “More learners of the province are currently taking advantage of the programme and are achieving greatness,” said Balfour. “Engen is once again proud and delighted to have given so many bright young people the chance to pursue their dreams of working in the maths and science related fields. We are proud of the class of 2012 and wish them all the best in their upcoming studies and careers,” she said.

Intense training and professional registration in the blink of an eye THOUGH there are no real short cuts when it comes to education and climbing the career ladder, there are qualifications that can make it a little easier for job seekers to get going in the world of world. A diploma in office administration, says Kerry Damons of Boston City Campus & Business College, is a case in point. “Getting a Diploma in Office Administration gives job seekers skills they can put to use in almost any organisation,” she says. “Not only are there many positions available in that field but the positions stretch across industries and types of organisation as well as across levels of seniority and offer career growth opportunities.” It may seem like the stuff that dreams are made of, but to get qualified as an Office Administrator does not cost a small fortune nor does it take numerous years to complete. Firstly, learners may enrol for the course irrespective of their pri-

or knowledge or experience, provided they have a Matric (Grade 12) Certificate. Secondly, the qualification has different exit points, so a learner decides how far he or she wishes to go and when to exit the qualification. There are three exit levels, resulting in three different qualifications. Should you wish to – or can only afford to – do one year of study and succeed in completing the year with good results, you receive a Certificate in Office Administration on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 5. With such a certificate, you should be able to find an entry-level position. Those who pursue a second year of study and successfully complete another 120 credits, will receive the Higher Certificate in Office Administration. To your advantage, while in second year, you can opt to complete a further 120 credits to graduate

with a Diploma: Office Administration at NQF Level 6. Students get further benefits towards their CVs, by writing and passing ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) exams at the end of each year as they can get the official designation of the exam passed such as certified Office Manager, and can write COMICB (SA) after their names. “There aren’t many qualifications out there that give you this kind of training and professional recognition in such a short, intense period of time,” Damons points out. “It is hard work as you’d have to complete 360 credits within two years and pass additional ICB assessments in order to qualify for the Diploma, but it certainly is worthwhile if that is your choice of career.” What is office administration? Essentially, Office Administrators are the people that ensure or-

ganisations run smoothly and efficiently. Office administration entails a set of day-to-day activities related to financial planning, billing and record keeping, personnel, and physical distribution and logistics within an organization. Office Administrators can be responsible for any office function from data entry, correspondence and client communication to organisational support and party planning. They are often the face of an office, greeting clients, employees and visitors and helping to direct them as needed. Even in the largest of companies, the smooth running of an office depends on the skills of a good administration team. Working in administration entails great responsibility. “It is an occupation that enjoys work opportunities both here and internationally and is suitable for both female and male as well as for people with certain physical disa-

bilities.” The choices abound: Office Administrators can choose a specific industry to work in such as Media, Manufacturing or Medical and go on to specialise in such an industry. Depending on experience and qualifications, they can move into positions such as Accounts Officer, Bookkeeper, Office Manager, Company Secretary, Hospital Administrator, Logistics Officer/Manager and Executive Assistant to Management, to mention a few. However, personal attributes like self-confidence, being organised and committed, liking systems and procures and having a sense of responsibility are paramount to success in the field. Showville pips Crystal Palace

SELBY MADIKANE IT was crunch time when Showville pipped Crystal Palace 2-0 during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League game at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium recently. Palace did show any signs of fear for Showville as they played their normal running football. Both goalkeepers brilliantly displayed their skills, thus denying the strikers any scoring opportunities.

The youthful side of Palace lost concentration, however, in the dying moments of the game and had to suffer the consequences. Showville striker Luyanda Shoes Matutu banged in two goals in the 85th and 89th minutes to make the final score 2-0 in Showville’s favour. African Bombers explosive in Cell C Rugby Cup SELBY MADIKANE

L

OCAL club rugby team, African Bombers caused the biggest upset of the first weekend of matches in the Cell C Community Cup when they beat Welkom Rovers 35-22 in the Zwide Stadium on Saturday. This was thanks to two tries from fullback Xolela Payi and 19 points from the boot of mercurial flyhalf Masixole ‘Coyi’ Banda. The Cell C Community Cup is a project of the South African Rugby Union that has been three years in the making and finally got underway this past weekend. The 20 participating clubs will be competing for the historic Gold

Cup and involves club communities across the country, from Worcester and Wellington in the south, to Rustenburg and Polokwane in the north of the country. Last Saturday African Bombers proved beyond any doubt that they were a force to be reckoned with in the running for the Cup. Rovers looked like a big threat to Bombers in the initial stages of the game but seemed to lose concentration as the game progressed. Bombers were awarded four penalties which Masixole Coyi Banda took to put his side 12-0 in the lead. Rovers scrumhalf Jaco Pretorius scored the first try of the game which was converted by flyhalf Pieter Strydom to decrease the deficit to 12-7. The game seemed to be evenly balanced until the host’s first centre Sizwe Twani scored a try con-

UK boxers to share skills with Uitenhage counterparts in and out of ring NCEBA DLADLA AMATEUR boxers from the United Kingdom will be landing at the PE International Airport tomorrow (Thursday) at 12 noon for an engagement with Uitenhage amateur boxers on Saturday. The entourage of 15 boxers and three managers, who are all from London, are the guests of Zama Boxing Club of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage, said Ward 43 Councillor Thembisile Gana who is part of the club’s management team. A team of boxers from around Uitenhage was selected in a boxing tournament that took place in KwaNobuhle at the weekend. According to Cllr Gana the club’s management decided to extend their involvement to include other local clubs rather than it being a Zama BC affair. Cllr Gana said the overseas

boxers and their trainers would be engaged in a skills transfer exercise at the same hall on Friday from 12 noon. He said local boxers were invited to attend. According to Zama BC trainer Ntemi Frans, qualified Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality ring officials will be working as referees and judges. He said he was hoping the local boxing fraternity would benefit immensely from the overseas visitors. “The London entourage will be taken around places of interest in Uitenhage on Thursday and Friday before the boxing match at the Sizakele Khonzi Community Hall on Saturday,” said Cllr Gana. The guests will also be taken for a walkabout at the Hopewell Reservoir on Saturday afternoon. Cllr Gana said the visitors will also leave behind all their training equipment for the benefit of local boxers.

verted by Banda to make the first half score 19-7 with Bombers leading. In the second half Bombers fullback Xolela Mbembe scored his first unconverted try to increase the lead to 24-7. The visitors’ wing Ernie Prinsloo scored a try under the poles which was converted by Strydom

to make matters 24-14. Mbembe then scored his second unconverted try to increase Bombers lead to 29-14. Rovers fought back strongly and their hard work paid dividends with a try scored by wing Kobus Aucamp which Strydom converted with the scoreboard showing 29-21. Aucamp scored his unconverted

try to decrease the lead to 29-26. Rovers fans whimpered when Bombers fly half Banda took two penalties in succession to make the final score 35-26. African Bombers next game in round two of the Cell C Community Cup is on Saturday, February 23 when they play Durbanville-Bellville Rugby Club in Cape Town.

Tigers still in top gear SELBY MADIKANE WALMER Township based team Bontle Tigers Ladies Rugby Football Club started the season with a big bang when they beat Zwide United Ladies Rugby Football Club 28-10 in the Eastern Province Rugby Union B-Section League match at Wolfson Stadium recently. Both sides looked rusty in the initial stages of the game owing to the long season layoff. United did not wait long to put points on the scoreboard with their No 10, Queenie Payi, scoring an unconverted opening try to put her side 5-0 in the lead. After a long struggle Tigers’ first try came courtesy of Andiswa Tafi which their sure-footed flyhalf Sikelelwa Soci converted to make the score line 7-5. Tigers’ performance improved as the game proceeded and their pacy skipper Poppie Windvogel registered her first try in her account which Soci converted to put Tigers in the half-time lead of 14-5.
