IronmanSA joins opposition Madibaz close off Varsity Netball against fish farm campaign LASHEIGH LUCAS IRONMAN SA organisers have added their voice to that of local businesses who are opposed to plans to develop a 6km fish farm anchored off Port Elizabeth’s popular Hobie Beach. They believe the fish farm poses a major threat as it will be a magnet for sharks, and a threat to marine life, eco tourism and investment in the Bay. IronmanSA has spearheaded an online petition as part of the campaign to stop the fish farm. “Our beaches have become an integral part of Nelson Mandela Bay in terms of tourism, water sport, recreation and the lifestyle of many residents,” said IronmanSA spokesperson Michael Flanagan. “They are one of the city’s biggest attractions and to establish something which will place this in jeopardy is something we cannot take lightly. We will all be affected should the aquaculture development zone (fish farm) go ahead,” said Flanagan. According to a report in The Herald, Marine biologist Shirley Parker-Nance warned that

the project could cause the tourism industry to crash, and see pollution on Bay beaches as well as lead to the International Blue Flag statuses being revoked. She said the abandoned inland fish farm in Coega – known as the Prawn Farm or SeaArk – was the ideal place to set up a farm in a more controlled environment. Flanagan added, “The effects on the tourism industry will be significant. This includes the loss of tourism income to the city, visitors and potentially jobs within the industry. “As a city, we have worked hard to establish Nelson Mandela Bay as the watersport capital of Africa and this will undo this work. “Environmentally, there is a threat to the marine ecosystem and the potential to attract predators such as sharks to Port Elizabeth’s most popular swimming beaches is high. This does not bode well for sports events such as Ironman and others who make use of the ocean and beaches”. The online petition on the website is currently still open for the public to sign. “We are doing all we can to create awareness,” concluded Flanagan. To sign the petition visit the website

THE Spar NMMU Madibaz brought their netball season to an anticlimactic close as they quietly exited the Varsity Netball tournament in Johannesburg on Monday, October 6. The Madibaz lost their last game of the round-robin section against Pukke (63-37) but had beaten hosts the University of Johannesburg (50-25) the previous day to finish a respectable fifth in the overall standings. The final fixtures reflect the up-and-down nature of the Madibaz campaign, with the team from Port Elizabeth ending the competition on three wins and four losses. Madibaz head coach, Dumisani Chauke said her relatively young and inexperienced squad had done well and she was pleased with their performance in the highlevel competition. “The standard was set very high by the team that made it to the semifinals last year. Most of those senior players, myself included, were not part of the team this year. “We may not have achieved a top-four finish this year but we have a different ‘tick’, so to speak.” With 294 goals for and 295 goals against them, the Madibaz demonstrated a good balance between attack and defence on the court. Proteas player, Zanele Vimbela, anchored the defence while multiple FNB Player of the Match Bavuyise Matyumza was consistently accurate on goal. “Our defence always does well but we will need to improve in our shooting circle. Although we’ve done well, we can always do bet-

ter.” Chauke said she was looking forward to an even greater season next year. “I am proud of each and every one of my girls!” She said they had already qualified for the third stage of the competition with a top-eight finish at the University Sport South Africa tournament earlier this year. “So viewers will be seeing us again on their TV screens.” Chauke said the management and players would sit down early next year to discuss their objectives for the 2015 tournament.
