Happy 60th for Dora’s Pamela S NCEBA DLADLA

HE is well-known for taking care of other people’s needs, but on Saturday it was Pamela Rubushe’s turn to be taken care of.

Family, colleagues and friends of Dora Nginza Hospital’s well-loved principal social worker Pamela Rubushe, gathered at St Stephen’s Church Hall in New Brighton for a surprise party to celebrate her 60th birthday. The party, to celebrate the eventful and illustrious life of this children’s rights activist, was organised by her siblings Ondla, Makhaka, Mzodumo, Nondumiso and Luxolo.

Pam, as Rubushe is affectionately known was celebrated by family including her mother Nosizwe Rubushe (86), invited guests, friends, colleagues, former classmates of Mzomhle High School in Mdantsane as well as her alma mater, the University of Fort Hare in Alice where she graduated with a BA, Social Work and Honours in Psychology. Described as an uncompromising perfectionist who worships education, Rubushe furthered her studies to obtaining Honours and Masters Degrees in Labour Relations at the then UPE. She was hailed by all as a caring and loving civil servant and professional who would go out of her way to fight for abandoned and abused children at the hospital. Working with the relevant government departments including the SAPS, Rubushe has helped a number of deserving mothers get proper official documents like birth certificates and IDs in order to access the necessary support grants and for children to attend school. “As her siblings we felt the date (her birthday) was important for us to celebrate, especially for the type of a person that she is.” said Makhaka, adding that his selfless sister always did things for others and that no party was ever held in her name. Rubushe’s party attracted the attention of her cousin Themba Rubushe, SA’s ambassador to Palestine in the Middle East as well as former classmate Dr Nolitha Vukuza who is working for UNESCO. The duo, who could not be present, both sent messages of support. Dr Vukuza wrote: “To a woman of my time; a woman of my heart; a woman of my generation. To the one so smart and so loving. Throughout your life you have displayed integrity and loyalty to your convictions and beliefs. You never forget to pray and you never forget to love.

Metro to forfeit R9.5 million of conditional grant METRO MINUTES THE Nelson Mandela Bay is to forfeit nearly R9.5 million of its Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant in terms of revised allocations published by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene in the Government Gazette in terms of the Division of Revenue Act 2014. The metro was initially allocated R18.461 million, but this has been cut to R9 million. The Njoli Square Development is being undertaken through this grant, but the project has been stalled as a result of the refusal of two owners to sell their properties. The properties are required before the development, which includes a civic centre and transport interchange, can take place but despite a number of efforts to persuade them to sell their properties they have refused to sign any form of agreement. The possibility of expropriation has been mooted but council has to date eschewed this course of action. The project, initiated in 2003, has been on hold since 2010 because of the refusal of the owners to sell their properties. The metro has, however, been allocated an

additional R1.4 million for technical assistance associated with this grant taking the total amount for the 2014/15 financial year to R2.5 million. Nene also states in the Gazette that Nelson Mandela Bay has asked to convert its Public Transport Network Operating Grant to the Public Transport Infrastructure Grant. The effect will be to transfer R100 million from one grant to the other. Nene says the request has been made in order to allow the metro to “meet current-year financial obligations in relation to infrastructure projects required for the current year.” Nelson Mandela Bay is not the only government entity in the Eastern Cape to forfeit funds in terms of the amendments to the Division of Revenue Act. The Eastern Cape is to forfeit R43.148 million of its the Health Facility Revitalisation component of its National Health Grant of R135.674 million. Limpopo is the only other province to forfeit funds in this area. The purpose of the grant is “to help accelerate construction, maintenance, upgrading and rehabilitation of new and existing infrastructure in health.”

Traffic fine system operational again LIZEKA TANDWA SPEEDING motorists in the Nelson Mandela Bay will have to tread carefully as the traffic prosecutions system is now fully operational after several months and millions of rands in revenues lost. DA Spokesperson for Safety and Security Caucus Chief Whip, Gustav Rautenbach, confirmed that a new service provider has been contracted from this month after the service provider that was appointed last year failed to meet its mandate. In April 2014 PE Express reported that millions had been lost by the municipality after the use of a computer system for capturing the data of the fines was suspended owing to the municipality not paying the service provider. The Traffic Prosecution System, named the Cyprus system, was suspended in February 2014 for over 5 months, when the Cyprus service provider, Traffic Management Technologies (TMT), suspended their service with the metro owing TMT R36 000. The suspension resulted in fines older than 30 days having to be withdrawn which created a major loss of income for the municipality. The municipality then appointed a new service provider, Mavambo, but according to Rautenbach more than R10 million was lost during their tenure as the metro’s

service providers for a part of last year. Rautenbach said the metro has now reemployed TMT as its service provider after Mavambo’s contract was terminated on December 31, owing to their failure to meet the metro’s mandate. “Yes, we are fully operational. The current status of the prosecution system is that the old system was switched on and all the information can be retrieved. TMT service provider was given the contract as it has all the information pertaining to our traffic prosecution system and nothing was lost to Council,” said Rautenbach. Rautenbach said currently the Traffic Department was working on the backlog caused by the issuing of manual receipts. “In the past the same service provider (TMT) delivered an excellent service to Council for many years and the same can be expected for time to come. The problem with outdated computers was sorted as new computers were purchased,” he added. Rautenbach said, however, that the municipality was still struggling with staff shortage and over R40 million back pay still owed to traffic officials since 1997. “The vacancies that do exist should be filled without further delay. It would also assist if properly qualified staff could be appointed in key positions as this is more often than not where everything fails owing to incompetence. Negotiations are, however, taking place to account for the back pay,” he said.

Baywest prepares for bumper 2015 REPORTER DEVELOPERS of the R1.7bn Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth’s western suburbs saw out 2014 with a bang, celebrating news that they had exceeded their job creation targets during the construction phase by more than 40%. Independent auditors BTKM have confirmed that since construction kicked off in mid-2013, almost 4 300 people have been employed on site. This represents a 43.3% increase on the 3 000 direct jobs which developers initially forecast for the construction phase of the project. “The Baywest development is a massive economic driver for the region,” said Baywest MD Gavin Blows. “Not only is the construction phase of the mall creating much needed jobs, but once the mall opens in April, a further 1 500 permanent jobs will be created for the mall’s operational phase.” Blows said project’s Community Liaison Officer had been inundated with CVs from Nelson Mandela Bay residents wanting to be considered for employment once the mall opened. “We are using the CVs to compile a database which we will pass on to our tenants when they look for employees for their stores,” said Blows. “Although the decision of whom to employ rests with the stores, we are doing what we can as developers to assist in helping people in this region find employment.” But the employment would not end once the mall opened, he said. “Because Baywest Mall is kicking off the development of the entire Baywest City precinct, construction will continue once the mall opens as other developments get underway. Baywest City will be to the Eastern Cape what Century City is to the Western Cape,” said Blows. SEEING OUT 2014 Construction milestones being wrapped up at the end of last year included the completion of the mall’s 65,000m² roof as well

as the completion of the latest bridge over the N2 freeway which is part of the R300 million Baywest Roads Development Project. Basil Read, which is responsible for the roads development, is on course to complete the first phase of the project by March this year. This includes linking Port Elizabeth’s western suburbs to the N2 freeway by extending Walker Drive in Sherwood with a multi-lane road that will encircle the mall. The entire roads project will be completed by September this year when Cape Road in Bridgemeade/Rowallan Park is linked up with the N2 via a series of onramps and off-ramps which will lead to Baywest Mall. “The roads development is set to unlock crucial economic growth in the western suburbs,” said Blows. A BUMPER 2015 With the fittings of many of the 250-plus Baywest Mall stores already underway, Blows said everything was on track for the handover to the major tenants this month. This meant the likes of Edgars, Game, Pick n Pay and Woolworths – which will be stationed at the four quadrants of the mall – could begin fitting out their stores, he said. Landscaping – already underway with the planting of Coral trees in front of the mall – would continue in earnest and be wrapped up by March,” said Blows. In keeping with the mall’s focus on the environment, indigenous gardens would be created around the mall, he said. “We have had a good year despite having to deal with strikes which brought the industry to a standstill. We are working hard to create a destination which will become the pulse of Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Blows. “It is an exciting project which is going to change the face of the city, create jobs and boost tourism. After years of meticulous planning and research, it is an honour to witness this development unfoldng.”

K’Nobuhle residents unite to have murder suspect arrested and victim buried NCEBA DLADLA IN the spirit of being the brother’s keeper, Kwanobuhle residents were united in not only seeing a murder suspect arrested, but also urging the family of the suspect to contribute towards funeral arrangements for the deceased.

Lindela Zinto (47) of Hini Street, KwaNobuhle was stabbed to death on the night of January 2. An eyewitness led residents towards the alleged suspect and it was reported to the police. At time of going to print the suspect could not be named as he had not yet pleaded in court. “At that stage Lindela was in a coma in hospital. We were concerned that the eye-witness who was on holiday from Cape Town would leave,” said one resident. According to the resident, who did not want to divulge too many details because the matter was under investigation by the police, the suspect allegedly attacked the deceased without being provoked.

When the suspect was seen roaming the streets a few days after the incident, the residents facilitated a citizens’ arrest. “Police arrested the suspect. He appeared in court last Wednesday but was not asked to plead. We (the residents) marched to court and demanded that he did not get bail,” said Nokuzola Sesanti, a neighbour. The residents visited the family of the deceased, who was a domestic worker and mother of three, and saw the need for help with funeral arrangements. They then asked the family of the suspect to contribute towards the funeral. Lindela was buried at the weekend. Her aunt Mama Nombulelo Mjaco said, “We did not force the family to support us. We know they did not send their child to murder Lindela. “We accepted her passing as God’s will. It’s only that residents came in peace and asked that that family put themselves in our shoes,” she said. The suspect was expected to appear in court yesterday (Tuesday) January 13. At time of going to print no details of the court appearance were available

spoken ambassador for women across the world.” “When Zipho entered the PE Express Teen Miss Port Elizabeth in 2009, being her first pageant, she did not for a moment think that she would win. “After attending rehearsals with Rolemodels SA, she competed in the pageant. Just before going out on to stage, Zipho was distraught when she discovered that the zip of her pageant dress was broken. I quickly pinned the zip together backstage, as best I could, and then told her to walk as if it was not broken, and that people would only notice it if she drew attention to it. Zipho positively floated across the stage as a regal queen, and was subsequently announced as the PE Express Teen Miss PE,” said Smit. According to Smit, one of her most beautiful characteristics is her humble yet strong nature. “Zipho has the makings of a leader for the community, for South Africa and indeed for the world. Win or not, we know that Zipho will continue to shine as a beacon of hope for women and to use her leadership ability for the greater good of humanity,” said Smit. When she was chosen as a semi-finalist for the Miss SA title, Zokufa said it had been her lifelong dream to enter for and become Miss South Africa.

“I love grabbing opportunities that come Ziphozakhe my way and the ability to inspire the youth Zokufa when of South Africa and the country as a whole she won her has always been something I have strived first beauty title for. SASSA warn residents against loan-sharks

Solomon Mahlangu High a shining star for education CARA-LEE SCHEUN THE matric class of Solomon Mahlangu High started their year two weeks early, sacrificed their vacations and even camped at the school before the exam to study for it. And the result - in only one year they managed to increase the school’s matric pass rate from 48% to 72%. “To increase from a mere 48% to a 72% pass rate amid a difficult year is definitely something to boast about!” said principal Mncedi Mtengwana. “For many years we had let the community of KwaNobuhle down with the poor pass rate. Our school must be a beacon of hope that living conditions can improve. “With our leap to 72% we are no longer in the non-performing group. It has been achieved. Now I can again wear a tie and jacket with pride,” said Mtengwana. The relentless team effort of the students, teachers and parents for improvement triumphed over problems that would have let some throw in the towel. For the most part of the year teaching took place in the dangerous dilapidated VM Kwinana school. This was due to the fact that the brand-new school building right next door could not be used as the Eastern Cape Department of Education did not supply the furniture. Irate parents locked the school gates and even held education officials hostage to demand delivery of the furniture. This ac-

tion achieved their goal but resulted in many precious hours of teaching being lost. This occured while the matrics and their teachers started the 2014 school year early to get a head start on their matric work. In June, only a month after the furniture saga, Solomon Mahlangu’s matrics wrote their June exams. Ghosts of 2012’s 29% returned when the June pass rate was stuck at 48%. Emergency measures were put into place – extra classes during the holidays and over weekends and a study camp at the school. Classrooms were turned into dormitories and study halls and the “matric drill” with a fixed study, exercise and eating routine started. Teachers camped out and sat hunched over the books with them. And on January 6, when the matric results were released, they reaped their rewards. “The extra time and effort that we had to put in under the watchful eyes of our teachers, made me feel negative at times. But today, and certainly for the rest of my life, I do not regret that I did it,” said Sandisile Mazegwana, who this year will be studying megatronics. Chumani Maku, one of the school’s top achievers who this year will be studying mechanical engineering said, “Thanks to the dedication of parents and teachers, most of our matric group have a future that beckons brightly.”

OFFICIALS from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) recently visited KwaNobuhle to address about 300 residents at the old Sisonke High School about their operations. “The Mother’s Gift invited SASSA officials to come and address the residents after our Home-based Carers discovered that there were many problems encountered by especially needy communities as a result of lack of information,” said Mother’s Gift head and founder Mama Sheila Isaacs. The Mother’s Gift is a non-profitmaking organisation (NPO) looking after the interests of mostly unemployed women, children, sick and vulnerable members of this township. Those who are able to travel, visit the Mother’s Gift for a meal while the senior citizens and the bedridden depend on the mercies of the Homebased-carers for food before taking medication. Some of the beneficiaries are school children from poor families. Many suffer from different diseases including malnutrition.

Hundreds of TB, High Blood pressure, Diabetes, and HIV/Aids patients get a warm meal at the Mother’s Gift premises on a daily basis. “Most of these people must get social relief from government but without information they struggle,” said Mama Sheila. According to Fatima Magwa, a community leader supporting the Mother’s Gift, during the SASSA visit residents were warned against unscrupulous deals coming from fake SASSA officials. Residents were warned against scams by money launderers and loan sharks who falsely make people with SASSA cards apply for loans and insurance policies - as though they were the bona fide SASSA officials. “SASSA officials announce their visit through the legitimate community structures and the media. They drive SASSA branded vehicles when they come. This was explained,” said Magwa. Residents were given an opportunity to ask questions. – NCEBA DLADLA

Police applaud K’Nobuhle for a crime-free festive season NCEBA DLADLA

KWANOBUHLE members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have applauded the residents and visitors of the area for an almost crime free Festive Season. “KwaNobuhle police have a reason to celebrate the success of operation Festive Season Duty Calls that kept the area of Kwanobuhle relatively quiet,” said police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli. According to Nkohli, the men and women in blue manned roadblocks on certain roads as did the regular police patrols during the operation. Speaking to PE Express Indaba this week, Nkohli applauded members of the community as well as visitors who were well behaved during the festivities. He said they co-operated with the police during the the stop-and-searches held from time to time. “Only five motorists were arrested for driving motor vehicles while under influence of alcohol the whole of December,” Nkohli said, attributing the success to high police visibility, the support of Community Police Forum (CPF) who he said, decided to forsake festivities and rendered a voluntary service to the community.

The deployment of police and reservists in hot-spot areas, including monitoring of taverns, according to Nkohli, contributed immensely in achieving their targets. “We also urged people going on vacations who were to leave their houses vacant to make it a habit to inform their nearest police stations that their houses would be left vacant for a specified period,” said Nkohli, adding that police then intensified patrols in those vicinities. ) In another police success, Sgt Nkohli mentioned that police, in a joint operation with the CPF and social workers from the local Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), Self-help and Resource Centre (SHARE) visited and closed eight illegal shebeens and outlets brewing concoctions in the KwaNobuhle area. In this operation, Nkohli said they ended up destroying 1 800 litres of concoction. He addedthat in two of the outlets they found children among the patrons who were drinking inside the premises. “This matter (of children among the drinking patrons) will be investigated by the social workers,” said Sgt Nkohli, adding that police issued fines of over R8000 for the contravening of the Eastern Cape Liquor Act.

Meet our award-winning columnist, Selby Madikane NCEBA DLADLA HIS many obligations as dedicated teacher, husband and father of three, does nothing to deter award-winning PE Express Indaba columnist Selby Madikane to work for the promotion of one of his other big passions, sport. Madikane, who is a teacher at Mbasa Primary School, has been a columnist for PE Express Indaba almost since the start of the newspaper more than five years ago. In this time he has received various awards from sporting bodies NAFA, ZAFA and SAFA. He himself is a dedicated sportsman who is rooted in grassroots development. He has played rugby, soccer, volley ball and done athletics. “I was born into a sports loving family. My uncles and older brothers and sister played rugby and netball. The family teams were African Bombers and Collegians RFCs. I played as a lock-forward for Collegians after graduating as a player for Yellow Woods Farm School,” said Madikane who was born in Thornhill, the sixth child of the late Jamani and Lizzy Madikane. Madikane played rugby for Sithembile Primary School and Loyiso High, both in Zwide township. He played volleyball for Al-

goa College of Education, his alma mater. In addition he also participated in athletics and running the 1 500m. He also shone as a 10 000m athlete during his days at Loyiso High School. “Teachers like James Njenje and Mr Geza, the principal, taught us that sports keep the youth in positive living,” said Madikane Madikane ventured into football and played for City Professionals FC and later City Royals FC where he was baptised into administration at the tender age of 15. “I was 16 when I played for the first team. Johnson Langman taught me more about sport and discipline,” said Madikane who later joined Black Pirates as the utility player and then left to join SOLA Stars FC around 1986. Madikane admits that it is here that his love for sports administration was heightened. He mentions the late Solomon Vani as the man who encouraged him. “When Vani left the club I took over management and led the club to winning many league trophies. This is still one of the strong teams in Veeplaas,” said Madikane. He thanked his wife Nomangesi for her support and said he enjoyed writing for PE Express Indaba “because it helps me inform communities of what is happening in their communities.”

Coega helps learners improve in maths and science eTHE Coega Development Corporation (CDC), an enabling agent for socio-economic development growth in the province, believes that only through developmental initiatives running adjacent to higher education can the pass rate of matriculants in the Eastern Cape be improved. Matric results released by the Eastern Cape Department of Education stated that the province recorded a slight improvement in the pass rate which increased by a marginal 0.5% points to 65.4% this year. Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC head of marketing and communications, said even though there had been an increase in the matric pass rate it was evident that there was a dire need to improve maths and science marks in the province. One solution which he believes that can improve the situation is CDC’s Maths and Science programme which is offered through Coega’s Maths and Science Academy (MSA). Maths and science participants are offered free tuition in its Maths and Physical Science programme. The CDC is the operator of the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). The Academy, which was established in 2013, already has seen excellent results and returns which are empow-

ering learners to receive university admission to study and become scientists, engineers and technologists. “Last year (2014) learners in our programme achieved a pass rate of 87% for maths and 80.8% for physical science,” said Dr Vilakazi. Mpumezo Ndabeni, CDC Maths and Science Manager, said the criteria for learners who want to make use of the Maths and Physical Science Programme include that learners must have written matric and pass all other subjects except mathematics and physical science. Ndabeni also said the programme is available to those learners who want to improve their maths and physical science grades. “Even the learners who have passed their maths and science subjects but need to improve their grades in order to gain admission to certain qualifications are also welcome to attend the programmes,” Ndabeni said. About 4 000 learners, between grades 10 and 12, as well as junior grades, are benefitting from the programme which has a footprint in the education districts of Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Fort Beaufort, Mdantsane and Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Happy 60th for Dora’s Pamela Continued from page 1 “You have always been curious about education and you have always been committed to development. You were like this then, you still continue to be the woman of substance and significance,” wrote Dr Vukuza. Themba Rubushe wrote, “Pam, from unknown beginnings at Twecu, you’ve grown to be a national figure. Your selfless deeds in helping the needy and the helpless haven’t gone unnoticed. Not only the family, but the nation is grateful for your commitment to your profession.” Rubushe was also praised by her sisters-in-law. They took turns speaking

about the loving and caring person that she is to her family as well as their families. Rubushe thanked all for the “surprise party” and added that she appreciated getting flowers while she was still alive. Rubushe pointed out that she was not retiring. She said she would like to continue with her advocacy work and being the voice of the voiceless. “I enjoy my work and am happy with the kind of support I am getting from a number of people and government departments especially the SAPS. She was quick to add that “medical social work is not for the faint-hearted. You need God’s support to succeed.”

IRB7s a significant driver of economic growth in NMB METRO MINUTES THE total economic impact of the IRB7s for Nelson Mandela Bay in 2012 was R154 million with 500 temporary and permanent jobs created. In 2013 the figures had risen to R217 million with 700 temporary and permanent jobs created. And Stadium Operator Access Management says it is “confident” that the figures will have increased “along a similar growth

trajectory” in 2014. Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium Chief executive Chantal du Pisani said the final figures for 2014 will be released later by SARU, adding that she believed the metro was “in a good position” for a possible renewal of the contract to host the event. She said that global sponsor of the IRB7s HSBC and national sponsor Cell C had been pleased with the operational support offered by the stadium this year. Du Pisani said that the unaudited foot traffic figures showed that continued year-

on-year growth had been recorded. She said attendance in 2014 had increased by 8% compared with the previous year, adding that on the Saturday of the event, 26 537 spectators attended while the figure for Sunday was 36 504. The total number of spectators was 63 041, up from 58 369 the previous year, she said, ensuring that the 2014 event was “the biggest yet and a resounding success. Du Pisani said the stadium “continues to be a world-class destination for global sporting events and an income-generating asset

for residents and business owners of Nelson Mandela Bay. She also points out that together with the 41% year-on-year cost reduction in its annual operating deficit, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium “is on track in terms of its business strategy”. Stadium revenues have also been boosted by the relocation of Chippa United from Cape Town to Nelson Mandela Bay, although the team has announced that it is now planning to play some matches in Buffalo City.

Well known stars headed to IRONMAN 70.3 in East London REPORTER SOME of South Africa’s most loved sports stars are putting their athletic abilities to the test by trying something completely different - they’re taking on the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa in East London this month. The East London crowds can be on the lookout for rugby stars such as Joel Stranksy, Ashwin Willemse and Warren Brosnihan. The ’95 Rugby World Cup hero is no stranger to endurance events and has completed both IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa and IRONMAN South Africa.

Ashwin Willemse will be doing his second IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa after the bug bit last year, while Warren Brosnihan will be getting his feet wet for the first time. Willemse had to learn to swim in order to compete in 2014. Another newcomer is South African pole vault star, Okkert Brits who will be doing his first IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa after he was challenged by his good friend and IRONMAN finisher, Ollie Le Roux. South African media personality, Liezel van der Westhuizen, is also in line to make her second appearance at the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa. She missed the cut-off in 2010, so she’ll be looking forward to getting over the line in 2015.

The primary objectives are to prepare the top Russian National team while strengthening international football relationships and promoting football in Russia. According to Fina the facilities are top class but the weather conditions are very chilly as it is winter in Russia. “We are in Group C and are likely to be the group leaders. KUYASA United, affectionately known as Gerber, humiliated their neighbours Real Dodgers 7-2 in their ZWIFA Ntando Tours Premier League game that was played at Gal City Grounds on Saturday. ZWIFA Ntando Premier League title contenders Gerber looked as if they were in a practice session. Dodgers suffered a series of defeats last year and should be going back to the drawing board if they are serious about campaigning in the ZWIFA topflight league.

Golden Aces played to a 2-2 draw against Shining Stars while Gal City maintained their position of winning the league title when they defeated Strikers United 2-0. Sophakama Stars trounced the beleaguered Camper United 4-0. Zwide Pirates earned a 2-1 win over Manchester City with Major Chiefs edging out Morning Stars 2-1. Zwide Celtics slipped 2-1 to the buoyant Swartkops United while Real Crusaders had a bye. – SELBY MADIKANE

Boxing fraternity in mourning over death of former promotor Yusef Abubar Mtoba NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay boxing has opened 2015 with the shocking news of the untimely passing of former boxing promoter Yusef Abubar Mtoba on Sunday morning. Mtoba was buried in the afternoon of the same day in accordance with the prescripts of his Islamic faith, said regional Boxing South Africa (BSA) Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. Mapitiza was talking to PE Express Indaba Sport about what he thought was not a very bad 2014. “Compared to the previous year, 2014 had only six tournaments while in 2013 we had eight. Those were quality fights, however. They were Eastern Cape provincial title tournaments including one national title fight which we won through Nomampondomise Xotyeni - after a long drought without the national title in the metro,” said Mapitiza proudly.

Explaining, Mapitiza said some of the tournaments were cancelled owing to the governing body BSA’s enforcement of the rules something that has always been there but overlooked. “This is concerning the payment by promoters of purse-monies 14-days before the tournament,” said Mapitiza, adding that promoters were not very prompt with keeping that rule. According to Mapitiza, one of the cancelled tournaments belonged to a new female boxing promoter who wanted to engage certain fighters that were unfortunately already billed in other tournaments at the time. Brighter prospects that emerged in 2014 include EC Junior flyweight champion Mzwabantu Dabaza. The surprise of the year came in the KO defeat of EC Heavyweight champion Unathi Jacobs by Sthembele August, said Mapitiza. He mentioned Louis Phillip and Mzwandile Sidina as trainers to take note of. “Win or lose, you can see that boxers be-

longing to the duo have worked hard in the gym,” said Mapitiza, adding that he still hoped Nelson Mandela Bay could get more quality trainers to take the region back to greater heights.

Asked about the ring officials Mapitiza retorted, “At this stage I’ve got enough as required by BSA - nine for every tournament. They are doing a good job. I am satisfied with their work of refereeing and judging fights.”

Bucs hold log leaders to a draw SELBY MADIKANE ROYAL Bucs drew 1-1 with SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League log leaders Young Ideas in a tough battle at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Ideas looked dangerous as they took the game to Bucs. In some stages of the game Bucs looked nervous. As such their defender Siyabonga Chikoya Matwa headed an own goal in the halfway mark of the first half. Bucs skipper Akhulile Eto’o Dlilanga and Mcebisi ‘Fire’ Gawulana combined well in

the centre of the park. However, before the start of the second half, Kwanele Mnikina headed home an equalising goal for Bucs to make the final score 1-1. Despite there being lots of positives from both sides, the coaches went home frustrated By not collecting maximum points. Bucs goalkeeper Sibongile “Baron” Tsewana was the man of the match for pulling brilliant saves at point blank range. One of Bucs’ defenders who stood his ground was Thamsanqa Tsewana, with Ideas skipper Asanda Makana, Freedom Funani and Lizo Norushu having a good game. Camper United goalkeeper Mfundo Mo-

yikwa was key in their goalless draw against Lion City. City tried and tried but Camper were well prepared for their game. Camper could not convert their goal scoring opportunity when their striker failed to beat City’s goalkeeper in the referee’s optional time. Real Strikers upset M’well United SELBY MADIKANE REAL Strikers caused a major upset when they thumped the on-form Motherwell United 4-1 in their MOFA Build It Premier clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. United started their game as if they were going to register a goal but Milani Senze scored Strikers’ first goal following a good solo run by Kaizer Quntu down the left side. United silenced their opponents’ noise when United’s wing Lonwabo ‘Myeni’ Nyondo came up with an equaliser. The first half ended with a score of 1-1. In the second half United were searching for a goal to put them in the lead, but Strikers

wing Quntu delivered a nifty pass to Simphiwe Mtati who pulled a great goal. Strikers increased their lead to 3-1 when their super substitute Zolani “Zane” Mofu unleashed a long range volley to beat United’s goal. Before the fat lady sang, Strikers were awarded a penalty which was scored by Abongile “Pingpong” Nkohli. Shining Stars whacked the struggling tame Young Tigers 3-1. SELBY MADIKANE SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay side Young Ideas could not book themselves a berth in the SAFA Nedbank Cup Knockout Competition when they lost 3-2 to BEE Stars in the quarterfinals at Rotary Stadium in Mthatha recently. The Nelson Mandela Bay side played well despite failing to deliver positive results. According to Ideas Head Coach Bulelani Fina his side showed character and determination as they played as the best of the best teams in the province. In the finals the University of Fort Hare (UFH) lost 1-0 to Cloud 9. Then Cloud 9 had to face Tornado FC that beat Real City 6-1 in the ABC Motsepe Nedbank Cup KO finals. Unfortunately Cloud 9 succumbed 2-0 to Tornado FC in the provincial finals. Tornado FC will represent SAFA Eastern Cape in the national last 32 eliminations at a venue and date that still have to be announced by SAFA Head Office. The other results of Nedbank Cup KO:
