W (ho?) g n i W(hat?) C om n ! S oo W(hen?) Local TV station set to switch on region Watch this space
ANNA PAUW LIGHTS, camera and a whole lot of action await Nelson Mandela Bay when the new local community television station, Bay TV is switched on for the very first time on October 1. The Bay TV licence is only one of six broadcast licences for community television stations granted until now by the regulator for the South African communications sector (ICASA). Bay TV will be the third station to go live, after Soweto TV and 1KZN TV, which have both proved to be success stories over a number of years. According to the chairman of the Bay TV board of directors, Vuyo Mvoko, the strength of the station will undoubtedly lie in its relevance. “Bay TV will create a platform for the community to engage with itself,” said Mvoko explaining that people have an inherent need to engage with issues that directly affect them, in a language that they understand. According to him the licence, which is valid for seven years, was granted last year and their mandate now is to get the station up and running. Mvoko, who was born in New Brighton, said the television station will create a myriad of opportunities for young people interested in all facets of the medium. “I was lucky to have had the opportunity to realise my dream of becoming a journalist, but many youngsters lose hope and sight of their dreams owing to a lack of opportunities. Bay TV will play a powerful role in helping youngsters who are passionate about the industry, to realise
their dreams”. In terms of the licence agreement, the channel will offer content in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. The station is run as a Section 21 Company, and as such, said Mvoko, with small budgets, contributors’ efforts will have to be focused on creativity and teamwork. “When budgets are small, the value of collaboration comes to the fore and creativity is boosted through finding solutions to possible challenges.” Mvoko, a seasoned print and television journalist, said the station also creates an ideal platform for those with experience to impart valuable information to the less experienced. Even as a non-profit organisation, the station still has to generate an income to make it sustainable. To this end, Mvoko said, with relevant and innovative programming content, viewership is expected to start growing the moment the station is switched on and he is convinced that growing viewership figures will lure local and national advertisers. The station will be housed in the Red Location Museum in New Brighton, as soon as infrastructural changes have been implemented to house a television station in the part of the building that was initially designed to be a restaurant. Mvoko said that many things happen in town and the Board felt it was important for the station to be located in the townships. The Gauteng based production house, Urban Brew - which is also contracted to Soweto TV and 1KZN TV - is appointed to set up and run the station over the seven year period. According to Elize Viljoen, broadcast unit manager of Urban Brew, they have recently moved into the re-
gion to conduct auditions and interviews to appoint presenters and staff for the station, who will all be from the Eastern Cape. Film crews will be driving around the Metro on the weekend. “On Saturday we will be visiting the Port Elizabeth area and on Sunday, Uitenhage and Despatch. We will have cameras and presenters interacting with the public. “The station will cover the whole
of the Nelson Mandela Bay region, including Bethelsdorp, Despatch, Uitenhage, KwaNobuhle, Motherwell and New Brighton. To the east its reach is as far as Alexandria, while it can be viewed as far as in Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp to the west”. Viljoen said programming will include a line-up of community news, sport, youth and children’s programming as well as local music, to name but a few of the highlights that will
consist of local content. People will be able to view the channel by tuning their normal television with a terrestrial aerial that picks up e-tv. By manually tuning your television in the UHF bandwidth until you reach e-tv, Bay TV can be found beyond e-tv (channel 54, frequency 735.25MHz). People who battle to locate the channel can call Bay TV on 0 012 345 6789.
Counting down to the switch on of PE’s new community television station, Bay TV, the film crew of the production house Urban Brew recently visited a number of media institutions in the region. In the Bay FM studio from left are Sasa Nqabeni of Urban Brew and Bay FM presenters Theo Klaas, Adore Morgan and Siya Citwa (in front). Photo: SUPPLIED

Sowat 30 586 geisers is al by regeringshuise hier aangebring.

Sommige foutiewe krane is vervang.

McArthur Swimming Pool’s condition a great concern TANYA VAN ZYL WITH the Summer fast approaching, concerns are growing over the condition of the McArthur Swimming Pool in Summerstrand and whether it will be open in time for the coming school holiday. This popular swimming pool is currently in a very bad state “because the previous tenant terminated their lease unexpectedly one week before the Ironman competition in April,” said Dean Biddulph, DA Councillour for the Ward. As a result the operator (Bel Essex) withdrew, essentially leaving the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s
(NMBM) pools department to look after the facility. “The problem with this is that because the facility was outsourced, no budget provision was available to pay for the maintenance and upkeep of the pool,” Biddulph explained. Since April no new tenants were appointed to manage the facility and no maintenance was done to the pool either, he added. “I am appalled that what should be a relatively simple process has been allowed to drag on for such a long time. We should by now have had new leases in place.” According to Kupido Baron, Municipal Spokesperson, the Municipality is requesting people to submit tenders.
“We have our own people in the Municipality that can run the swimming pool, but in the long term we prefer to appoint someone who can run the complex for us,” Baron said. He added that they had a small problem with leakage in the pool in August, but they are currently busy fixing this problem. In the meantime, Biddulph said he had discussions with various roleplayers, including a very strong potential tenant who has “expressed a very keen interest in helping to get the complex back on track.” “I understand from discussions that responsibility for the complex is likely to be passed on to the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA),” Biddulph said.

Local Xhosa knitwear designer takes part in London Fashion Week NCEBA DLADLA IF you dream it, you will live it. This is perhaps what keeps highflying local designer Laduma Ngxokolo going. Ngxokolo (25) of KwaMagxaki in Port Elizabeth jetted off to the United Kingdom on Wednesday last week to take part in the London Fashion Week. It is not the first time that this Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) alumnus, who graduated with a BTech Textile degree last year, goes abroad. Ngxokolo, who will be showcasing
his self-styled and culturally inspired fashion of Xhosa knitwear on the global stage, has had his work scrutinised and received rave reviews from leading international fashion designers. This young man, who specialises in wool and mohair, is on the verge of launching his own production label. He has been able to add five designs of knitwear for men including, for the first time, a cardigan-shawl for men in his designs. According to NMMU Media Liaison Practitioner Roslyn Baatjies, NMMU is not only assisting Ngxokolo to establish his career, but the university has also helped Ngxokolo launch his creative and innovative
hub to assist talented arts students with entrepreneurial skills, facilities and support. “It seems there is nothing that will ever stop Ngxokolo since winning the South African National Flag of the SA Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) Design which earned him his first trip abroad and a right to stake his claim to stardom in fashion designing,” said a proud Baatjies. “It’s unbelievable,” said the former Lawson Brown High School matriculant of his instant fame before his departure last week. Ngxokolo was expected to meet the other two South African fashion designers, Stiaan Louw and Hennie van Huyssteen, in London.
“I am still trying to build a brand, but some top designers already want to collaborate with me,” an overjoyed Ngxokolo said, adding that he was hoping to attract more orders and international attention as he mixes and mingles with his international counterparts. Laduma Ngxokolo jetted off to participate in London Fash ion week on Wednesday last week to showcase his de signs of Xhosa men’s knit wear such as the one he is wearing. Photo: Supplied
St Dominic’s Priory Junior School supports Blood Donation
ST Dominic’s Priory Junior School participated in the South African National Blood Service’s (SANBS) Adopt-a-Month Blood Donation Project for the sixth year in August. The aim of the learners was to encourage at least 70 teachers and parents to donate blood in the adopted month. The project was introduced during assembly when Blood Buddy visited the learners and an educational and motivational talk was given to mobilise the learners. Weekly progress reports were th Blood Dona on M ta op Ad S’ : SUPPLIED distributed to keep everyone up to ated in the SANB oto cip Ph rti pa r nio Ju y date and finally on September 9 St Dominic’s Prior the final results were announced to tion Project.
the school. In total, 110 units of blood were collected and therefore the target of 70 units was comfortably exceeded with 157%. In total 15 people were first time blood donors, 16 people were lapsed donors (people who have not donated in the past year) and 79 were repeat or regular blood donors. Of the 515 learners and teachers, 82 participated, which is a participation rate of 16%. This is a remarkable achievement considering that less than 1% of the South African population donates blood regularly. Grade 1M was announced as the winning class with 37% participa-
tion and 14 blood donations. Morgan Temlett in Grade 3T was announced as the person who encouraged the most people to donate blood. She managed to persuade six people to donate blood in August as part of this project. Currently, 21 primary schools in Nelson Mandela Bay participate in the Adopt-a-Month Blood Donation Project. Not only is this a practical way to educate the youth about blood donation, but it also brings in life-saving units of blood as a result. A preliminary study was done and it showed that 43% of learners who participated in the Adopt-aMonth project during 2006 are blood donors today.

Pearsonleerder skitter in olimpiade JACOBUS MYBURGH
OGILVY CAPE TOWN 46330/BW/E
Nagenoeg 31 000 inskrywings is ontvang.
THE BOARDWALK SUPPORTS RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING. GAMBLING FOR PERSONS 18 YEARS AND OLDER. WINNERS KNOW WHEN TO STOP. NATIONAL RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING TOLL-FREE COUNSELLING LINE

Summer trends at Pier 14’s annual fashion show
Farmers’ Market at Grey a success
TANYA VAN ZYL
WHEN the Grey High School in Port Elizabeth and Selborne College from East London clashed in their annual derby recently, the hostel parents from Grey decided to treat supporters to something a little different . . . They put together their very first farmers’ market that was organised by the hostel parents to not only celebrate the hostel’s 100 years, but also to promote comradeship between parents of the school. “The idea of the farmers’ market was to bring the parents of Grey together and to get them more involved in the school and its activities. And of course to raise some funds for the 140 hostel pupils to make hostel life a bit more bearable for them,” Niekerk Ferreira, a hostel parent, said. Ferreira, a citrus farmer from Patensie, has three sons – two of whom are still pupils at Grey (gr. 8 and gr. 12). He is one of the many hostel parents who donated goods for the market. “All of the goods that were sold at the market was donated. Nothing was bought. All the parents pitched in and did their share for the market day – it was amazing,” Ferreira explained. And thanks to all the donations from the

THE latest summer fashion trends for youngsters will be displayed when Pier 14 Shopping Centre hosts its annual fashion show on Saturday, October 22.
A feast for the eye . . . and stomach. hostel parents R80 000 was raised from the market. Some of the products that were quite popular at the market, included the various biltong stalls, sausage and venison pie stalls. Rusks, cakes, lemon syrup, sosaties, herbs and even a variety of plants were also on sale. The farmers’ market was so hugely popular, that it was decided to make this an annual event and the parents are already busy planning and organising next year’s event, Ferreira said.
Steyn said all entrants under the age of 18 would need signed consent from a parent or guardian in order to take part and would also need to make themselves available for fittings and dress rehearsals. “It’s hard work but the kids really enjoy strutting their stuff on the ramp.” Based on the success of previous years, she said all the centre’s fashion tenants were looking forward to the event. “We find that it draws a lot of feet to the centre. People tend to go into the stores afterwards and buy what they saw and liked in the show.” Steyn said a “buy and win” promotion was running concurrently with the fashion show. Four lucky customers will each walk away with R300 worth of gift vouchers. The winners will be drawn at the gala event. The three-hour fashion show takes place from 10am outside the Mr Price store on the first floor. She said photos and regular updates regarding the show would be posted on www.facebook/pier14PE.
The Mr & Miss Pier 14 Fashion Show would showcase all the new children’s clothing ranges available at retailers in the centre, said centre management’s Sophia Steyn. She said the models, aged three to 18 years, would be chosen via a competition and stood to win prizes and clothing vouchers worth over R20 000. “This is a fun event for the children and their families,” said Steyn. “It’s also a great opportunity for people to see what will be in store for the festive season.” She said would-be models could collect an entry form from any participating store and submit a photo and R25 entry fee to centre management by Friday, October 7. The age categories for entrants are three to six, seven to nine, 10 to 13 and 14 to 18 years. Ten boys and girls will be chosen in each category by an independent judging panel.
Delicous cupcakes, nuts and juice were just some of the products on sale.

The Montego Classic PE Pet Expo – a one-day consumer event for pet lovers – takes place at DF Malherbe High School in Walmer on November 5. The concept for this unique event was born out of a conversation between two local “diehard pet owners and lovers”, Bernadette Meistre and Liza Vermaak. “The target of the expo is to bring together like-minded people and their furry, feathery and/or scaly friends,” said Meistre. Whether it’s a dog, cat, fish, bird or reptile, the expo will provide an opportunity to shop for products for your pet, she added. Touch rugby balls kick off in communities TANYA VAN ZYL WITH the Rugby World Cup in full swing, it is quite fitting that an initiative teaching unemployed women to make rugby balls out of recycled materials, was launched countrywide last week. The Touch initiative touches communities by training unemployed seamstresses to make Touch rugby balls using recycled billboards. The balls are then stuffed with between 25 and 30 plastic bags, which are collected from the streets of the community. It in turn addresses two issues – the lack of work and litter – all in one. Touch Sponsored by EnviroServ, this initiative “aims to harness the energy around rugby in 2011, giving communities a tangible reason to get excited about the rugby event”. According to the Marketing Director of EnviroServ, Delia Lavarinhas, their company deals with waste management and “there is no greater waste than the wasted talent in all of our communities. “By demonstrating how materials like old billboards can be re-used and by employing people in communities, both to make the balls and to clean up the streets, we are really showing how we as a company are ‘in touch’ with South Africa’s waste management needs,” Lavarinhas said. Touch provides unemployed women with the necessary training and equipment to make quality Touch products and in turn they are paid for each ball they make. “Women are able to earn up to R200 a day once they have learnt the pattern and have practised making balls for a few days. We provide industrial sewing machines and training for community women with backgrounds as seamstresses, who are now out of work,” said Russel Porteous, founder of NGO “LIVE”, the fulfilment partner for this project. Touch balls cost R50 each, with R30 going directly back into the community and the balance contributing to “LIVE” operating costs. To order balls, e-mail hosia@winwin.co.za or call 0 072 288 9088.

RECYCLING is not just a trend anymore, but it has become a neccessity. And that is why Cannibal Glass Recycling is launching a campaign for the bottle banks in Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch to make the public aware of where they can recycle their glass. Cannibal Glass, which has been in business for the past nine years, is trying to get more Port Elizabethans to start recycling glass, cans, plastic bottles and cardboard, to take the pressure off the landfill sights and to decrease the damage that people do to the environment. Together with Bay FM, they will be trying to create a safer and cleaner environment throughout Nelson Mandela Bay. To promote their message, they are holding a competition this month, entitled “Message in a bottle”. To enter for the competition, residents should place a piece of paper with their name and telephone number on it into a bottle and place it at the nearest bottle bank in their area. In return for their trouble, entrants can win a weekend for two adults or a family of four at the Addo Elephant National Park, sponsored by SANParks, as well as R2 500 cash, sponsored by Cannibal Glass in association with Bay FM. The competition started on September 1 and runs until September 30. Visit www.cannibalglass.co.za to find your nearest bottle bank.

Retina SA is using this opportunity to launch their “A Cure in Sight” awareness campaign. This serves to inform the thousands of South Africans affected by Retinal Blinding conditions of the hope for treatments that the miracle of science offers. “Clinical trials to treat Stargardt Dystrophy, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Leber Congenital Amaurosis and Age-Related Macular

With enough support we could bring clinical trials to South Africa,” Claudette Medefindt, Director for Science of Retina SA, and Deputy President of Retina International, said. These retinal conditions affect many thousands of South Africans and millions worldwide. Gene therapy, stem cell and artificial retinas and many more innovative therapies are now offering real hope for treatments and cures. However, Retina SA would like to warn retinal

Algoa FM Battle of the Blood Givers now on ONCE again, the battle is looming – an epic struggle of sheer heart and soul, sweat and sacrifice, for the sake of life itself. The blood that is spilled will be remembered for eons to come. Prepare for the Algoa FM Battle of the Blood Givers! The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is calling all businesses and corporates to support the Algoa FM Battle of the Blood Givers. One company can stand a chance to win R15 000 Algoa FM advertising airtime.
All they need to do is motivate three people to donate blood between September 19 and 30 at any Blood Donor Centre. Remember, three blood donations are equal to one entry and one can enter as many times as one likes. Blood donors don’t have to be employed by the organisation – family members and friends are definitely welcome. Entries will become valid once the third donation has been made successfully. Therefore, all three donations don’t have to be made on
the same day, as long as itheyfallwithin the specified period. In South Africa a blood transfusion takes place every 39 seconds. Currently, blood usage is increasing by at least 2% year on year. All participating organisations will be mentioned on air and will be listed on the Algoa FM website. For more information and to follow the progress of the Battle of the Blood Givers, visit www.algoafm.co.za or contact Maryke Harris (SANBS) on 0 041 391 8254.

Golden Voices postponed until 2012

the South African dates of the tour. The Golden Voices tour will continue, but will move to May 2012. The new date for Port Elizabeth will be announced at a later stage. Members of the supergroups, Pussycat, BZN and George Baker, recently gave a

Bay teacher gets third place at the World Dance Masters AN ERICA Girls’ High School teacher recently fulfilled her dream after she came third at the World Dance Masters 2011 that was held in Manchester in the United Kingdom. Lauren Collier, who is also a former headgirl of Erica Girls’ High School, was crowned third place at the Palace Hotel where she participated in the Solo Line

school, is not only an extraordinary dancer, but she is also currently completing her Post Graduate Certificate in Education too. “Having been placed first at the South African Masters event held in Durban in May, I qualified to dance at the World Dance Masters, thus a personal dream which has been two years in the making, come true. Bernice McMagh from the Black Stetsons Line Dancing Club is her dance instructor and accompanied Collier to the Masters. In total 16 South African dancers attended the World Dance Masters 2011 of which nine competed in the solo line competition. Furthermore, Collier said she was required to dance, Cha Cha, nightclub two-step and funky. “All music and dance steps are given to competitors prior to the event. The dances are set and competitors are expected to dance the set of dance steps with no deviations. Personal style and armwork are encouraged and competitors are judged on accuracy of execution of dance, technique, timing, correct styling and pizzazz.” She said she started line dancing in 2007 just because it seemed like something fun to do. “It very quickly became a huge part of my life and I entered my first South African regional competition in 2009 and have not looked back ever since.

Local DJ debut album release d soon CLARISSA VENTER “I do not like calling myself a celebrity; I would only say that I am well-known.” This is how DJ Spectrum, the Bay’s popular House Music DJ, describes himself. Spectrum, whose real name is Chad Smith, spent the last month in the Mother City to record his debut album called Secrets of House Music, after he came out tops at the Viceroy Ultimate Makoya Mix Final which was held in Johannesburg in June. His win secured him a R100 000 record deal. The youngster (22) who lives in Cleary Estate, said his CD consists of 12 tracks featuring the likes of Crazy White Boy and the single, Love you Better. “It is a wide variety of music styles that include House, Rnb, Tech House, Deep-Funky House, Hip Hop and Old School 80 ’s and 90 ’s.” DJ Spectrum, who matriculated at St Thomas High School, said he was very excited about the opportunity to work with one of South Africa’s top music producers, Gabi le

It is a dream come true – faster than I expected,” he said. “It was hard work to come where I am now. But I can now only go from strength to strength.” Spectrum said his album will hit South African music stores within the next two months. “The official launch date is still to be announced.” He added that a music video is also in the pipeline and that his national music tour will kick-off soon. common property would include driveways, parking bays, garages, swimming pools and walkways.” Vermaak says the common property is jointly owned by all the section owners and it is controlled by the body corporate. “In terms of the Sectional Titles Act, the responsibility for the maintenance of any common property lies with the body corporate.” This entity must arrange for the maintenance to be effected and should also pay for the work that needs to be done, says Vermaak. Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in PE says the Act places an obligation on the body corporate to maintain the common property. “This obligation makes it clear that the trustees cannot decide that the unit owners are now responsible for the maintenance of certain portions of the common property.” Du Toit says this includes the paved areas outside their units. “The fact that the reader offered to have the paving done and paid for it does not change this situation.” Similarly, says Du Toit, it would not be possible to bind a third-party purchaser of a section to maintaining a common area outside his or her unit. “The reader should certainly raise this issue with the body corporate and clarify the situation before repairs are actually required. Action now will help to avoid a potentially unpleasant situation in the future.” .

Seb to swing sceptre in Singapore?
Talking F1 by Natalie le Clue
IS there anything more beautiful than the sun glinting off a scarlet red Ferrari as it stands on the grid, ready to pounce? More often than not you would be hard-pressed to come up with an image that evokes more spine-tingling glee than this. The light dancing across the sculpted body of a silver McLaren as it flashes through the illuminated barriers of Singapore may be the exception. Singapore makes its fourth appearance on the F1 calendar. While it is still a relatively new addition, Formula 1’s first ever night race has made its mark as one of the most unique venues of the season as an estimated 1 500 lights illuminate the bumpy street circuit. The Marina Bay street circuit’s 23 corner layout stacks up as one of the most
challenging circuits of the year. The 5.073 km length of the track is littered with a variation of slow first and second gear corners which requires good mechanical grip and a high downforce package. As with any street track, good traction out of corners and braking stability are required on this typically bumpy circuit. For the drivers the humidity and frequency of corners will serve as the biggest challenge. Overtaking at the sharp end of the field has been a rarity. In 2010 Fernando Alonso was able to hold off Sebastian Vettel for the entire race to take his second, this time controversy-free, win in Singapore. The addition of DRS in 2011 should, however, create the wheel-to-wheel racing that has become synonymous with the 2011 season. Should the safety car make an appearance, race control will face their own challenges in making sure the race runs to completion. As one of the longest races of the year, Singapore will run close to the two-hour time limit set by the FIA. Given that the Marina Bay circuit is a street racing track, it draws some comparisons to the likes of Monaco and Hungary. McLaren Mercedes - in particular, Jenson Button - had a particularly good showing at these two races. Button has taken two victories so far this season and will look to extend the strong season he’s had into Singapore. “This is one of the races I’d most love to
win and I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to show the same sort of pace that we showed at Monaco and Hungary, where I had two of my best drives of the year.” The 2009 champion went on to say that the team’s current form should provide the perfect platform for a strong race this weekend. “I’ve been really satisfied with the pace of the car and the efforts of the team.” Sebastian Vettel starts the weekend poised to secure his second world championship in as many seasons. His domination in the early part of the season, and consistency through the latter, has made him the overwhelming favourite, just about, from the start. In Singapore, however, he has a mathematical chance of making it a reality. Exactly how can he win the title this weekend? 1. If Vettel finishes off the podium, the title race will move onto Japan in two weeks’ time. 2. If Vettel wins the race, Fernando Alonso has to finish 4th or lower, with Jenson Button and Mark Webber third or lower. 3. If Vettel is second, Alonso has to finish 8th or lower, with Button and Webber 5th or lower. Lewis Hamilton must not win. 4. If Vettel is 3rd, Alonso has to finish 9th or lower, Button and Webber seventh or lower. Hamilton must not finish in the top two. Sixty-one laps are all that could be standing between Sebastian Vettel and becoming the youngest ever double world champion.

Long road but that’s much better, Boks! This Sporting Life by Michael Shafto
IF THE SPRINGBOKS started this World Cup tournament shakily, they made up for it big-time last weekend – and the most important aspect of it was a major turnaround possession-wise by the South Africans in the second round against Fiji. After the nightmare Welsh debacle in the Wellington “Cake Tin”, where they pulled off a skin-of-the-teeth 17 - 16 win, the 49 - 3 defeat of Fiji, at the same venue, was what South Africans had desperately been hoping for. In truth many of these same supporters were fast beginning to believe this ageing team, weighed down by their multitude of caps, would find the task of hanging onto the Webb Ellis Cup won in France four years ago, a bridge too far. What a relief then to see Bakkies Botha – who many feared might do an obligatory ten minutes before retiring from the fray and returning home so that a replacement
might be summoned – pull his weight for a solid 50 minutes. If, in tandem with his currently injured second row partner, Victor Matfield, the pair can do more of the same at the business end of the tournament, the Springboks could yet surprise their detractors. Let’s not forget here Heinrich Brussow’s work at the breakdown, while the efforts of Danie Rossouw, playing at lock, in the tight and loose, were little short of Herculean. It was the structured functioning of the pack as a whole that made this dream performance so memorable, against a team that despite scoring only three points, refused to lie down. Add to that the physicality of the pack as a whole, and the pace of aggression of Schalk Burger, Pierre Spies and Brussow, and that’s enough to make any prospective opponents shiver. The road ahead is still long and tricky, but a speedy return by stalwart Jean de Villiers, whose presence next to Jaque Fourie in midfield makes such a difference to the effectiveness of the backline, will help. There aren’t many halfback pairings as feared as that of Fourie du Preez and Morne Steyn, not forgetting the latter’s potent goalkicking ability. How good must a team be if you can find place for play-
ers like Hougaard, Lambie and Aplon only on the bench? Desmond Tutu says of coach Peter de Villiers, give credit where credit’s due. Most certainly, Archbishop – and spare a thought for master tactician, Rassie Erasmus – and the 22, who all played their part. Had he had the chance of tapping into Oprah’s show last week, with singer Debbie Boone, Divvie no doubt would have been singing her classic, “You Light up My Life” to the entire squad. Finally, here’s a thought: Kiwis mightn’t take kindly to the All Blacks reaching the final only to choke, but there’s nothing wrong with NZ sense of humour at present. Radio station, Mediaworks, has put out a howler on “How to Speak New Zillund at Rugby”. Ruck – Abbreviation of boy’s name; Bull – What you play the game with; Tickle – Stopping another player; Sickened Five – Position after 1st Five (aka fly’arf); And Thumb – Song before match; Peck – Eight forwards; Becks – Abbreviation of Rebecca popular gill’s name; Pash Nut – Love of game; Maul – Where you shop; Gull – Points scored by kicking; Rough – Referee; Troy – Worth 5 pts; Ketch – Receiving ball. PS: Good on yer, Ireland. Beating Aussies could be good for the Boks! Cheers for now.

Port Elizabeth Express: Wednesday, 21 September 2011
SOME of the biggest names in sport and entertainment will come out to bat for charity at the Celebrity Cricket Sixes tournament in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, September 24.

Spectators at Kemsley Park will see a host of former national sportsmen and celebrities face off in 10 six-a-side matches in aid of the Cancer Association of South Africa and JAG Foundation. Organiser Laurence Finn said the positive response to last year’s inaugural event in PE had made it the natural choice as kick-off venue for the nationwide tour, which consists of six tournaments. “Every one of the players has given his time for free. They realise this is for a great cause as well as a lot of fun.” Finn said each of the six teams would be captained by a national cricket legend while the remainder of the team would be made up of a provincial cricketer, rugby legend, two noncricketers and a local businessman. He said Dave Callaghan, Eldine Baptiste, Kenny McEwan, Pieter Strydom and Rudi Bryson are among the legends “selected” to lead a team. They will be assisted by Chevrolet Warriors players such as Corbyn Dolley, Reece Williams and Basheer Walters. According to Finn, the cricketers would either be helped or hindered in their quest for victory by former Springbok rugby players Chad Alcock, Robbie Kempson and De Wet Barry, as well as EP Kings team-mates Jaco Engels, Jaco van Schalkwyk and Mzwandile Stick. “The funny part is that it’s the rough, tough rugby players who are most afraid of the little red ball.” Adding to the fun will be sundry sportsmen

like Olympic pole-vaulter Okkert Brits, javelin-thrower Philip Spies, former national superbike champion Arushen Moodley, racing driver Shaun Watson-Smith, golfer Titch Moore, wrestler Mark Beale and national jetski champion Brett Armstrong. Former Mr South Africa Denver Burns, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s communications director Roland Williams and Cricket SA match referee Dev Govindjee are some of the businessmen who round out the teams. Finn said the Hong Kong Sixes-style tournament would provide entertainment for the whole family. “Six overs a side is the fastest form of cricket, so it’s fun and full of action. There is a lot of sledging and interacting with spectators.” Besides the cricket action, Finn said there would be a beer garden, food and retail stalls and children’s entertainment. “We will interrupt play (at 10.30am) for the Rugby World Cup game between New Zealand and France. It will be shown live on the big screen, so spectators won’t miss a moment of the action.” Gates open at 8am, with the first match starting at 9am. Tickets cost R20 for adults and R10 for children. Bookings can also be made for the charity dinner on Friday, September 23. The cost of R2 500 for a table of 10 or R250 per person includes a spitbraai. At this event, celebrities will share their funniest stories under the theme, “What happens on tour, stays on tour, or does it?”. Captains will be introduced at the dinner and their teams – selected by way of a draw – announced. The Celebrity Cricket Sixes will also visit Bloemfontein (October 16), Randburg (October 23), Pretoria (November 5), Durban (November 19) and Cape Town (November 26). Urban Run spectacular this weekend Water Sports World by Michael Zoetmulder
T
HIS Sunday will see the city’s first ever Urban Run with hundreds of runners tackling the city in a fun and exciting 12km urban obstacle race, the concept of which has become a huge hit around the world.
The Herald Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run offers great fun for spectators as participants tackle no fewer than 16 urban obstacles on their route around the famous sites of Port Elizabeth. The event will start and finish at the Donkin Reserve below the massive flagpole on the ‘balcony of the city’. Prince Alfred’s Guard will have a flag-rising ceremony before setting off the run at 8am. Participants will hit their first obstacle, the Mawethu Civils ‘Pipe Dream’ at just 800m from the start on the corner of Victoria Street and Chapel Street. From there it’s onto Govan Mbeki Avenue for the Randcivils ‘traffic barriers’ before crossing Vuyisile Mini Square and down the new Jetty Street Staircase into the Bus Terminus to run through a tyre obstacle and heading back up into Vuyisile Mini, past the City Hall and tackling the Boston City Campus ‘Corporate Ladder’. Crossing Military Road it’s onto Fort Frederick and the first of 4 obstacles constructed by the Scouts of Nelson Mandela Bay. Stormforce’s ‘Storm-the-Fort’ will require participants to climb into the fort via a cargo net before storming through the inside and out onto Gordon Terrace. Taking a short cut down to Brickmakers
Kloof, the participants will encounter the ‘Slip ‘n Slide’, which will take them into Settlers Park and onto one of two fun river crossings which have been constructed by the Scouts. Heading back out of Settlers Park via the How Avenue side, participants will run through St George’s Park and onto the Crusaders Rugby ‘B’ field for the ‘Down and Dirty’ obstacle. Once successfully negotiated, it’s then on through the cricket stadium, up and along the top tier of the Duckpond Pavilion before heading out through the St George’s Park exit at the two art museums on Rink Street. A short stretch down Western Road takes participants to the Extreme Projects obstacle on the corner of Rose Street and Western Road before participants head down Bird Street for Trinder Square and Security Technology Worx ‘Shocking obstacle’. Then it’s all the way down Bird Street and

Castle Hill and into the Harbour before coming out at the Campanile exit and into the PE Station and through a waiting train. Participants come off the station via the Peel Street pedestrian bridge before making their way to Brittania Street and up the Grace Street Parkade to the Good Year ‘Tyred-out’ obstacle, before venturing back down and past the City Library and up the new Freedom Walk on the Donkin to finish beneath the flag pole. Truth be told, there’s just less than 12km of absolute fun awaiting the urban athletes who will welcome the Powerade along the course and the ice cold Glacéau vitamin water at the finish line. Come along and support the city in this epic event which will feature in a 26-minute programme on Super Sport at the end of October.
