People educated against listeria THANDI SETOKOE

ASTERN Cape Department of Health spokesperson Siyanda Manana has assured the public that the department will continue with surveillance activities on the listeria cases in the province, as well as educating the general public on the dangers and what to avoid. This after the announcement by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, on Sunday on the source of the present listeria outbreak gripping the country. In a statement, Dr Motsoaledi confirmed that products from the Enterprise food production facility in Polokwane were the source of the outbreak.

“In our constant search for the source of the outbreak and the treatment of people who are affected, a team from the NICD (National Institute for Communicable Diseases) interviewed over 100 ill people to obtain details about foods they had eaten in the month before falling ill. “Ninety three people reported eating readyto-eat processed meat products, of which polony was the most common, followed by viennas, sausages and other cold meats,” Motsoaledi said in the statement. He urged South Africans to stop consuming all processed products immediately. Manana on Monday said that in the Eastern Cape, 36 cases were reported in 2017 and 12 in 2018 so far.

People educated about listeria Continued from page 1 “From January to February 28, four listeria cases were reported in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, three in the Sarah Baartman Municipality, of whom one died, three in the Buffalo City Municipality and two in the Amathole District Municipality,” Manana said. “We are going to continue educating the public on basic hygiene. We have seen districts like Alfred Nzo which have community dialogues and such on the prevention of listeria. We will consolidate what these districts did after receiving written reports from them and release a comprehensive report,” Manana said. Motsoaledi said that “the recall of these products does not mean that members of the public must now relax and stop the five food safety rules, such as washing your hands before handling food or when coming back from the bathroom, making sure that food is well cooked, isolating raw food from cooked food, making sure that food is at an appropriate temperature and washing non-cooked food with clean running

water, as well as using only pasteurised or boiled milk products”. He said that the general status of hygiene of the population must still be a matter of priority to society as a whole, and must remain like that forever. People at high risk for listeriosis include: ) pregnant women ) neonates (first 28 days of life) ) very young infants ) elderly persons over 65 years of age, and ) anyone with a weakened immune system (due to HIV infection, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, people with transplants and those on immunosuppressive therapy, such as oral corticosteroids, chemotherapy, or anti-TNF therapy for auto-immune diseases). Symptoms of listeriosis include flu-like symptoms, such as fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Some high risk patients may experience confusion, a stiff neck, loss of balance or convulsions.

Local dancer makes history around the world REPORTER LOCAL dancer Courtney Pearce (25) continues to break new ground for a South African competitor in the world of Irish dancing. In April last year she took part in the Irish Dancing World Championships in Dublin, Ireland and made history when she became the first South African woman to ever be “recalled” at the competition. Essentially, this meant that after the initial two rounds, her collective score placed her in the top 50 competitors, who were then given the opportunity to dance one more item for the panel of adjudicators in the final round. Pearce, who represents the M.A.D (McWilliams Academy of Dance) Irish Dancing studio in Port Elizabeth, was placed 47th out of 204 competitors in the ladies over 21 category and was awarded a prestigious recall medal. At the SA Championships held in October last year, she was crowned the SA champion in the senior ladies section and also qualified to represent South Africa at the World Championships to be held in Glasgow, Scotland in March this year. This is the eighth time that Pearce has

qualified for the World Championships. She made history again when she attended the All Scotland Championships in October last year for the first time and became the highest placing South African female Irish dancer at an international competition by placing 12th. Pearce’s latest achievement was last month when she took part in the prestigious All Ireland Championships and achieved outstanding results. She was placed 10th in her soft shoe round and 14th in her hard shoe, earning an impressive overall result of 37th place. “These are phenomenal achievements for a dancer from a developing country and all the McWilliams Academy of Dance

dancers and parents are tremendously proud of her,” said Pearce’s dance teacher, Jennifer McWilliams.

Bay schools benefit from maths and science project REPORTER WITH the start of the new school year, Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA’s) journey to ignite a love for science and mathematics among 1 600 intermediate phase learners is in full swing. Pictured here are Enqileni Primary School learners (in front) with some of their teachers, at the back, from left, Zodwa Andrias, Mpumelelo Koom, Elliot Mfecane, Vuyiswa Nzube (principal) and Thando Dikeni.

FINAL REGISTRATION DON’T PUT YOUR FUTURE ON HOLD.

Initiated in January last year, the Mathematics and Science Primary School Project is a joint initiative between TNPA and the Johannesburgbased maths and science education company, SCIMAT Education and Disposals. Aimed at Grade 4 to 7 pupils and teachers, the primary school programme originated when TNPA recognised a gap in the academic structure between primary and secondary school learners. TNPA corporate social investment manager Shadi Montjane said feedback and consultation with high

school educators revealed the need to create an affinity for mathematics and physical science at the foundation phase in order to create a solid foundation on which to build later. “At the moment, the majority of academic interventions are at high school or tertiary level and it is often too late for those who lack a basic understanding of fundamental concepts in mathematics and physical science. “Thus, TNPA has taken upon its shoulder to close that gap and play its part in planting that seed in our future leaders,” Montjane said. Eight primary schools from across the Western and Eastern Cape were identified by TNPA’s corporate social investment team last year and received mobile science lab sets consisting of all the necessary equipment to conduct practical experiments in real time. These eight schools serve as feeder

schools to TNPA’s adopted secondary institutions which teach pure mathematics and science. Port Elizabeth schools Enqileni Senior Primary School and Young Park Primary School became the latest and final recipients of the training and equipment. Young Park Primary’s principal, Jeremy Langeveld, said the introduction of the programme into a school where the majority of the pupils came from disadvantaged homes, had the potential to lead to life-changing experiences for these future leaders. “Our learners will now be in a position to experience the practical part of these subjects, no longer simply sitting, listening to the teacher but now becoming actively involved in the learning process,” he added. The adoption process is expected to last between three and five years per school.

Local talent to let loose at 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Champs REPORTER

full-distance Ironman event. Mhlahlo (44) is another athlete who embodies the Siyaphambili “reach for the stars” attitude. After facing the major challenge of not being able to swim, his hard work and consistent drive have seen him overcome the obstacle. “Zolile turned his weakness into a strength and is now one of the fastest overall finishers in Siyaphambili. We are excited to see what he will bring to the 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championship,” said Siyaphambili administrator, Khanyisa Bada. Abrahams (47) is in his second season with Siyaphambili and is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. He will be joined by Arendse (33), who has been with the programme since 2011, and has consistently been one of the top Siyaphambili athletes to cross the finish line. The last member of the team and Siyaphambili’s team coordinator and coach, Justin Butler (26), has also qualified, having joined the programme in 2012. He is an example of what one can achieve by following the programme and giving it everything.

FIVE local athletes have proven that the sky is the limit by qualifying for a slot at the 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championships which will be held in Nelson Mandela Bay on September 1 and 2. From previously disadvantaged backgrounds, the opportunity to reach new heights and excel is always a tough battle. However, this once in a lifetime opportunity has been grabbed with both hands by triathletes Talia Nomdoe, Zolile Mhlahlo, Justin Butler, Yaseen Abrahams and Yusuf Arendse, who will be representing the Siyaphambili Triathlon Participation Programme, a Nelson Mandela Bay-based NPO, in the world-renowned event. Nomdoe (25) is the only woman in the group. This is her first season with Siyaphambili, having joined the programme last year. She is also a full-time paramedic student at Nelson Mandela University. Her zeal to succeed has also seen her enter the Standard Bank Ironman African Championship, in April, which will be her first

“We hope to inspire all potential PDI athletes to take the leap if they are interested in the Ironman triathlon by showing them that it is possible to achieve aspirations of this kind, despite circumstances. We also hope to create a platform for talented PDI athletes to grow and become pioneers in the sport,” he said. New artisan market for local entrepreneurs APD boosted REPORTER RETURNING to Port Elizabeth after living in Johannesburg for 20 years, Annelize Botha saw an opportunity to create an artisan market for local entrepreneurs and has been working on setting things in motion for some time. For more than a year, she approached various organisations for assistance and in the end it was a fellow entrepreneur, Grant Foong, who provided them with a “home” for the Locally Yours Market. Commenting on the reason she started the

market, Botha said, “Currently, there are many small business owners, myself included, who rely on their businesses for sustainable income. Our businesses are self-funded as we do not qualify for any funding or assistance due to several factors.” Though they have faced many challenges, the market is still going strong. Botha said they are proud to say that all of their artisans are from Nelson Mandela Bay. They started off with only 10 artisans and have grown to include 44 artisans at the next market. “We have a wide variety of crafts and deli-

cious food and beverages will be on sale as well. We have also used photography and artwork on our various advertisements and artwork from vendors who will be at the market so make sure that we keep it local,” Botha added. The next market will see new entrepreneurs launch several products as well. The next Locally Yours Market will take place at the Tramways Building on March 21 from 09:00 to 15:00. For more info contact Annelize Botha on 082 785 4118 or visit the Locally Yours Market Facebook page.

WHEELY BIN SURVEY The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is currently embarking on a Wheely Bin Survey to households in designated areas. The Municipality has appointed Wheely Bin Surveyors to engage with home-owners regarding any problems concerning illegal dumping. A Wheely Bin Surveyor must be in possession of a Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality War on Waste Project Identity Card, that bears the official logo of the Municipality, together with his/her name. Surveyors must also be wearing the clothing depicted on this notice. Should you be unsure of whether you are being visited by an official Wheely Bin Surveyor, please call the number below to verify the identity before allowing him/her into your home. Our office will have the correct verification about each Surveyor appointed in the Municipality for this project. Your full co-operation with this War on Waste Project will be appreciated and will help the Municipality to manage the project effectively and deliver its services efficiently to you.

To verify the authenticity of the Surveyor: Call from Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays, between 07:30 am – 16:00 pm

The Pier 14 Win a Car Competition ran from November 1, last year to February 22, this year. The prize was a Datsun Go Mid car which was financed through Pier 14 North End. People could earn themselves an entry form by spending R200 or more at any shop in Pier 14 and putting their entries into an entry box. On the day of the draw (February 24) three finalists were randomly drawn from all the entries and each received a box with a key in it. Out of the three keys, only one key could open the car and the person whose key opened the car was the overall winner. Zukiswa Mangesi was the lucky winner of a brand new Datsun Go Mid. Sanitary towel drive benefits girls from local school REPORTER A TOTAL of 26 Grade 8 learners from Ndzondelelo Senior Secondary School in Zwide were the recent beneficiaries of a sanitary towel drive in Port Elizabeth by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) Southern Region (SR), in partnership with Vukani Multi Sport Club (VMSC). Each of the learners received a year’s supply of sanitary towels as part of the first leg of SANRAL SR and VMSC’s drive to donate personal hygiene products to girls from disadvantaged backgrounds around Nelson Mandela Bay. Dan Ngcape, principal of Ndzondelelo Senior Secondary School, said the school serves very poor areas, including Soweto-On-Sea, Zwide and Veeplaas. “This is a quantile three school located in a very poverty-stricken area. A R10 to you will mean something different to the children at the school. The contributions made by SANRAL and Vukani Multi Sport Club are a huge deal to the kids. These kids will not forget this day,” said Ngcape. Currently it can cost between R10 and R60 for a pack of 10 sanitary towels, depending on which brand is purchased. The girls mentioned a num-

ber of adversities they faced when it comes to addressing their menstrual cycle, such as making use of a towel or toilet paper or even sometimes having to cut a sock to prevent stains on their clothes. “Our national office had a sanitary towel drive last year and identified various schools where we wanted to donate sanitary towels to high school girls,” Michelle Ah Shene, SANRAL SR marketing coordinator, said. “Ndzondelelo Senior Secondary School was selected after we were approached by the Vukani club to partner with them on the project. The school is also located close to the R75 project in Port Elizabeth which SANRAL is currently working on. “Supplying a smaller group of girls with a year’s supply of sanitary towels will make more of an impact. The girls will benefit over a longer period of time instead of just receiving a month’s supply of pads,” Ah Shene said. Wonga Mfula, president of VMSC, said the club’s social investment committee identified Ndzondelelo Senior Secondary School as the beneficiary. “It is our responsibility to give back to society and let people know wellness is important.” Ah Shene added, “Apart from the provision of training programmes in construction works,

building roads and bridges, SANRAL also focuses on developing human capital through educational programmes at tertiary institutions, pro-

viding internships for trainees and awarding bursaries and scholarships to university students and high school learners.”

Nwabisa (17) sees her ultimate dream come true THANDI SETOKOE HER biggest dream was to one day own an iPhone 7 cellphone and thanks to the Reach For A Dream Foundation (RFAD) that wish was fulfilled last week. Port

Elizabeth-based

Nwabisa

(17) was referred to RFAD by medical doctors as she suffers from a lifethreatening illness. Currently in Grade 11, this brave girl aspires to be a forensic investigator or a pharmacist in the near future. Described as a hardworking and disciplined learner, Nwabisa said

While on duty as a pharmacist, Nwabisa got hands-on experience of counting out tablets for packaging, as well as labelling the patients’ prescriptions. She was assisted by the Clicks pharmacy manager, Janette Koen.

she had always wanted an iphone but knew that her grandmother would never afford to buy her one. “As the organisation, we make it our mission to fulfil every child’s dream, regardless of how big or small. So, when Nwabisa shared her dream with me, we had to make it a reality,” RFAD coordinator Heather Mazomba said. The organisation then took Nwabisa’s wishes into account when planning her dream day and put together a morning of surprises. Her day included being a pharmacist for a day at Clicks Pharmacy in Greenacres, under the supervision of manager Janette Koen and a tour to the United Pharmaceutical Distributors (UPD), a preferred supplier to the Clicks retail store network. Thereafter she was awarded her dream iPhone 7. “We showed her a bit of retail pharmacy which is divided into two sections – the over-the-counter and the prescription section. We also counted out tablets,” Koen said. The overjoyed teen said she was

beyond happy with her new toy. “This phone is very expensive and I’m going to take very good care of it.” Nwabisa’s grandmother, Rose, expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to making Nwabisa’s dream come true. RFAD in Port Elizabeth has a mandate to fulfil more than 100 dreams a year. “A lot of planning goes into making a child’s dream a success and it’s heartbreaking when a child can’t experience that dream. “Sometimes the child gets sick before the big day and we have to cancel everything,” Mazomba said. For example, if it’s an oncology child, we have to plan around their chemotherapy, Mazomba added. For 29 years, the organisation has brought hope, joy and healing to children and their families by offering the child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to an illness. “For children, attitude is everything and they need all the encouragement they can get. Whatever the

dream, it often gives the child hope and courage to carry on the fight,” Mazomba said.

Kiyara teaches fellow learners her water-wise ways ANIKA DE BEER MOTIVATIONAL speaker Les Brown once said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream” and it appears that he was right. Kiyara Constable (8), a Grade 3

learner at Westering Primary School, embarked on a journey this year to ensure that her fellow classmates and learners stop using water unnecessarily by handing out hand sanitiser as an alternative to washing their hands in the bathroom. According to her mother, Al-

maine Constable, the family went to Cape Town last year where the water crisis was significantly worse than it is in the Eastern Cape. She (Almaine) bought hand sanitiser to use, so, she would not have to wash her hands unless it was absolutely necessary.

“I bought it in bulk and when we got back, I still had quite a lot left. “Kiyara decided to put it into smaller bottles that she could give out at school,” Almaine said. She added that they often encourage the children to be proactive and do something productive with their time instead of sitting

in front of the television or just being lazy. “The thing is, we can’t tell our children not to wash their hands with the water shortage, but we can teach them that they can still keep their hands clean without using water unnecessarily,” explained Michelle Jonas, a family friend and steadfast supporter of Kiyara’s campaign. When she initially started the project, Kiyara never intended to sell the hand sanitiser. “It was never her intention to sell it. Her friend insisted that she wanted to pay Kiyara for it and it went from there. “There was no business intent. It was just a little girl that wanted to save water,” Almaine said. Kiyara sells the bottles of hand sanitiser to her fellow learners and then encourages them to bring it back for a refill at a cheaper price. In doing so, she is teaching her peers to save water and recycle at the same time. Kiyara, who wants to be a teacher when she grows up, is currently saving her money to buy herself an iPhone. “It teaches her about responsibility and working for what she wants. The iPhone is not a need; it’s a want and she’s working for it,” Almaine said proudly.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 7 MARCH 2018

Bay welcomes its first local air rifle club REPORTER IT has been a number of years since the Firearms Act of South Africa has relaxed enough that licensing air rifles is no longer necessary. This has resulted in the formation of a number of South African clubs that cater for those who enjoy the different sporting disciplines of air rifle shooting. However, Port Elizabeth was left in the dust without an official air rifle club until 2016. February 28, 2016, marked the first get-together of a few enthusiasts who shared a common interest in rifle shooting and so, the PE Air Rifle Club (PEARC) was born. The club aims at catering for all walks of life and anyone is welcome to join in and enjoy their activities. PEARC currently consists of a four-member committee and about 20 active members. Though they have a dedicated shooting range in Westlands Road, the necessary infrastructure and facilities needed for a fully functional air rifle club is still a work in progress. “As the membership and participation grows, the future for the PEARC holds a lot of promise,” said Rion Barnard, a member of the

PEARC committee. The PEARC members have a keen interest in the various styles or disciplines of air rifle shooting, with specific focus on the hunter field target (HFT), bench rest and bell target disciplines. PEARC is not currently affiliated with any of the current nationally registered administrative bodies that represent the official sporting air rifle disciplines in South Africa, but as the interest in especially HFT competitions grows locally, it is likely that the club will host national events in the future. “HFT has really taken off in the Western Cape and is rapidly growing in the Eastern Cape and Gauteng as well. Earlier this year saw a well-attended Battle of the Regions HFT event that was hosted by the George Sports Shooting Club. “Competitors representing Cape Town, George and Port Elizabeth competed with the newbies in HFT, which PEARC shooter Craig Moss won, despite the fact that PEARC only had two practice round competitions before heading off to George,” Barnard said. PEARC encouraged all interested parties to visit the club’s range and enjoy the growing sport of modern air rifle shooting in all its forms.

Pictured here are the participants of the Battle of the Regions HFT competition that took place in George in April last year. PEARC shooter Craig Moss won the competition after only two practice rounds. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

PE’s Nerds of Steel to compete in Houston REPORTER A GROUP of inspired learners from DF Malherbe High School formed a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Lego League (FLL) robotics team, called The Nerds of Steel in 2016 and, through hard work and tenacity, they won the National South African FLL championships. Every year, FLL hosts a three-part challenge that is based on a real-world scientific topic. FLL robotics teams participate in the challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a playing field before developing a solution to the problem they have identified, all guided by the FLL core values. The aim of FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programmes that build science, engineering and technology skills, inspire innovation and foster well-rounded life capabilities.

The Nerds of Steel team is made up of Brad and KT Spies, Daniel Manlee, Connor Mcleod and coach Magnus Viljoen, who is also a science teacher at DF Malherbe. “Competing against equally talented and likeminded learners from across South Africa, our team was awarded top honours and as a result, are now eligible for the international competition,” said Dawn Spies, Brad and KT’s mother. This year’s competitors were tasked with finding a solution for how the world can manage its diminishing water resources better. The Nerds of Steel designed water canals from interlocking bricks that require no water in the manufacturing process. The bricks are made by collecting pollution, which is then heated and bonded to form superstrong bricks. The more bricks that are produced, the more water canals are added to the infrastructure. Approximately 33 000 teams from 90 different countries are competing in about 1 400 FLL qualifying and championship tournaments around

the globe. The Nerds of Steel progressed to the international stage after winning the regional tournament in Port Elizabeth and the national tournament in Johannesburg. Now, they will be travelling to Houston, Texas, to compete against the top teams from other countries from April 18 to April 21. “Getting the team to this point has taken a lot of hard work and sleepless nights, but with the guidance of their coach and support of parents and DF Malherbe High School, they have become SA champions,” Dawn said. “The journey to Houston requires hours of work in programming, mechanical design and project development. “The team’s biggest challenge is financial support,” she added. The Nerds of Steel are counting on their community to get them to the international competition in Houston next month. Anyone willing to assist them on their journey can contact DF Malherbe High School on 041 581 3145 or dfm@telkomsa.net.

Learners challenged to combine art, maths in unique competition REPORTER HIGH school learners, university students and teachers across Nelson Mandela Bay are being challenged to use maths to create art in the city’s first Math-Art Competition which kicked off on March 3. “There is so much maths in art and so much art in maths,” said competition coordinator Carine Steyn from Nelson Mandela University’s Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre (GMMDC), which is running the competition in consultation with the university’s School of Music, Art and Design (SoMAD) and the Department of Basic Education.

Entrants can turn to nature for inspiration, where flowers are really just parabolas and a snakeskin a masterpiece of symmetry and perfect angles. They can also be inspired by ethno-mathematics, which are mathematically correct designs that are a part of traditional culture, including Ndebele houses and Xhosa beadwork. “What we are looking for is beautiful drawings, created using maths.” GMMDC director Professor Werner Olivier, who is the driving force behind this competition, said, “We are piloting the competition this year and hope to make it an annual event. The Math-Art Competition also feeds into the broader science, technology, engi-

neering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) development work of the GMMDC, and will include learners and teachers participating in our projects across the province.” The competition has two main categories, one linked to the Grade 8 to 12 CAPS curriculum, where entrants have to use maths concepts taught at school to design art and the other an open category, which would include any artwork with a link to maths, including ethno-mathematics. “The competition is valuable because it crosses discipline boundaries,” said Rachel Collett, a lecturer in SoMAD’s visual arts department. “In school and at university, subjects are usually taught as separate entities, and there are reasons for this, but, of course, all knowledge is actually connected and requires imagination. “It’s good for learners to explore links between subjects because that can stimulate independent and critical creative inquiry.” Steyn added, “We are encouraging art and maths teachers to enter and to encourage their learners to enter too. This competition is not about artistic technique. “It’s more about the creativity that emerges from linking maths and art.” The artworks must be two-dimensional and A4 to A2 in size and relief work cannot be more than 2cm high. Each entrant must submit a 100 to 200-word essay, explaining the maths-art link in their artwork. Prizes, which include tablets, cell phones and art classes, will go to the top placed candidates and to individuals who receive “special recommendations” for outstanding creativity. Entries will be judged in three subcategories: Grade 8 to 9 learners, Grade 10 to 12 learners, students and teachers. The competition closes on May 4, while the

top entries will be displayed at a public art gallery in the city from May 19 to May 23. The winners will be announced on May 25 at GMMDC’s annual GeoGebra Conference, which will also be promoting STEAM activities to popularise maths in the classroom. For more info about the Math-Art Competition contact Carine Steyn on mathartcompetition@gmail.com.

Bay artists selected for national watercolour exhibition REPORTER

recently, of the IWSSA. Roberts, a retired playschool teacher, started working in watercolours approximately 12 years ago under the tutelage of Jo Daniel, before she had the opportunity to study under Doreen Perrins. There, she flourished in the medium and never looked back. Young, an accountant by trade, started using watercolours just over seven years ago with Ally Shone, before moving on to Lita Marais and finally to Roberts’s tutelage. Young discovered the IWSSA’s upcoming exhibition by chance. She and Roberts took a chance to enter what they had on hand, nei-

TWO local watercolourists, Robyn Roberts and Sheree Young, were selected from among South Africa’s top watermedia artists to exhibit three of their paintings in the first national juried exhibition of the International Watercolour Society South Africa (IWSSA), which will be held at the Artem Gallery in Sea Point, Cape Town, from this Friday until March 22. Both artists are members of the East Cape Watercolour Association (ECWA) and, more

ther having had the time to create something new for the exhibition. Contestants have to belong to the IWSSA and only three paintings per artist could be submitted. “We waited in anticipation to see if anything we submitted would be accepted. We were thrilled to be among the top watermedia artists in the country selected and are very excited at the prospect of exhibiting our work nationally,” commented both Roberts and Young. Approximately 100 paintings will form part of the exhibition.

Due to the fact that all watermedia is accepted into the exhibition, the event will award prizes for best on show, the top three opaque winners and the top three transparent winners, as well as a people’s choice winner. Those unable to visit the exhibition in Cape Town will be able to vote online for their favourite art piece for cyber choice winner. Voting can be done on the IWSSA Facebook page. The opening gala will take place on Friday from 18:00 to 21:00. IWSSA will also host a second exhibition in October in Johannesburg.

ADVERTORIAL: RICHFIELD GRADUATE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

And the winners of study bursaries from Richfield are . . The Port Elizabeth Express together with Richfield Institute gave two lucky readers the opportunity to win a bursary, worth R25 000 each. The winners of the bursaries are Kendill Clarke and Kenneth Harris. “I am very overwhelmed in winning the Richfield bursary and I cannot explain to you how ecstatic I am for receiving this blessing. I have never won anything before and feel like God has blessed me because life is a little tough for me,” said Clarke, who lives in Algoa Park. “Since I was a child, I have wanted to go into technology, but I never had the means, so I would like to thank you so much for recommending me.” Clarke’s chosen field would be anything in the line of Information Technology. Marisa Harris entered the competition on behalf of her husband.

“I would like to enter my husband Kenneth Harris for this competition as he has been dreaming to apply for the Production and Operation Mangement Course,” she wrote in her motivational letter to PE Express. “We have two small children and paying for education is a luxury at this point in our lives. This would enable him to have a brighter future and provide a bigger future for our children. He is a dedicated, hard

worker and would do his best in such a programme.” The Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology is an affordable Higher Education Institution and has been operating successfully for the past 28 years. Richfield has 33 higher education campuses and 43 TVET campuses nationally. The institution has been nationally and internationally recognised for its pioneering

efforts in improving the quality of teaching for learning by integrating technology into the curriculum to improve success rates. Richfield provides students with free access to high-tech devices and data networks – creating a “greener” culture of moving away from the excessive use of paper. Richfield is fully accredited to offer distance learning programmes. Richfield has assisted well over a quarter million South Africans to graduate with sought-after qualifications to enter the job market. Richfield does not receive any subsidies, grants or allowances. Richfield’s CEO, Jay Ramnundlall, emphasised that corporate South Africa should start looking at institutions like Richfield to which they sponsor bursaries, rather than limit their choices to public universities. A feather in its cap is when Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology (RGIT) won the National Business of the Year Award for 2017.

LUCK IS LUCK NO MORE STRESS, My name is Mrs. Williams from George. Life is beautiful when you meet someone who keeps his word and changes life for better. Money is no longer my problem since Chief Oma blessed me with lots of money in my account. In a year I have been robbed by fake doctors who demand money from me without help or results. When I first read the testimony about Chief Oma I never believed until I called him just to find out his services and payments. He explained about how people get reach through short boys and rats, magic wallet, magic rings and money in the house or account. I was interested in getting money into my house since I was far from him. He asked me to provide him with my account number and name and R1800. Within two days, I saw a notification of account deposit of 350,000 on my phone. I quickly went to the bank. Even though I was scared, there were no questions asked. My husband also tried money in the house and did as instructed within 30min he saw a box full of money. He was shocked. Thanks to you Chief Oma for saving my life and family you are indeed blessed with spiritual power.

I saw this powerful Shamsi on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for years and I tried many people for help but all failed. I could not believe it when he showed me my enemies in form of a dream and whatever they were doing to me. Every single detail he showed me about my enemies was so true. Shamsi accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems without me speaking a single word to him. Within 6 days after his prayers, my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me plus my enemies approached me and confessed the bad things they had done to me. Shamsi also gave me a special ring to fix my financial problems, and a love crystal that made people at home and at work to like me, listen to me and do whatever I want, without me even having to ask.

She also helps people with: • Financial Problems • Love Relationship • Work Crises • Family Problems • Bad Luck Health Problems • and many more...

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

F1 Testing Diary: Week One THE first week of preseason testing ahead of the 2018 Formula 1 season has been one of the most difficult to read anything into, the main reason being the cold, even snowy, weather for much of the first week of testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain. Nevertheless, even though the fuel loads, engine mappings and run plans are unknown to outside observers, there is always something to learn from cars on track. Mercedes It is easy enough to assume that Mercedes has built a good car for the 2018 season. With the exception of a suspected oil or fuel pressure issue early in the week, there didn’t appear to be significant issues with the reliability of the W09. Though they hit the track relatively slowly, as the week progressed the car too began to come into its own. What was evident was that both drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Valt-

teri Bottas, seemed to struggle with oversteer while heating the tyres. Naturally, it’s still a work in progress, but Mercedes would be pleased with their work thus far. Ferrari In contrast, Ferrari seemed to start the week on the front foot with a car that appeared to be an impressive step forward. The SF71H looked stable and showed no reliability issues whatsoever. As the test progressed, however, Ferrari seemed to stagnate slightly in its performance. There was no real improvement from the car that rolled out of the pitlane on day one. This could very well have been Ferrari’s run plan, which will make their performance in the second test all the most interesting. It is quite clear, however, that Ferrari and Mercedes maintain an advantage in engine performance. Red Bull It was a rather muddled few days for Red Bull. While the first day likely went according to plan, much of the rest of the test session was spent fidgeting with aero parts. Similarly, Max Verstappen’s time in the cockpit was affected by fuel leaks and ending up in the kitty litter. The good news is that when it’s on track and running smoothly, the Red Bull looks a good car.

It may be early days yet, but it is quite evident that the Renault engine is still somewhat adrift of the performance of the Mercedes and Ferrari engine. Renault and McLaren The Renault works team look to be the leaders of the midfield after the first few days of testing. The car looks settled in the hands of both Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jr and appears to be a good platform to build from for 2018. While Renault may be topping the midfield it’s likely only by a slight margin over McLaren. Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne’s new orange-and-blue liveried car looks quite solid and, most important, reliable with the Renault power unit now in the back of the car. Toro Rosso The announcement that Toro Rosso was partnering with Honda was a surprise given the Japanese manufacturer’s dire runs with McLaren. However, in stark contrast to 2017 the Honda engine ran with notable reliably. While the Toro Rosso didn’t set any headline grabbing laptimes it seems that the team and Honda are willing to work together which will be vital for their season prospects. The second preseason test takes place this week, ahead of the opening round of the season in Australia on March 25.

Tornado FC lead the pack by more than 15 points SELBY MADIKANE MDANTSANE-BASED side Tornado FC kept their hopes of winning the ABC Motsepe League alive by extending their lead on the log. Tornado FC fought tooth and nail against the Nelson Mandela Bay side, Lion City, to overcome them 1-0 in their tough game at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. As things stand, the secondplaced side, PE Stars, will find it hard to catch up to Tornado FC who are ahead of them by 15 points. In another game, City Lads shared a 1-1 draw with EC Bees at Mount Ayliff Stadium, while Try Again FC also played to a 1-1 draw when they entertained Highbury

FC at Stutterheim High School Sports Fields in Stutterheim. Following their 5-0 loss to Lion City, Butterworth FC redeemed themselves when they defeated the gutsy Future Tigers 1-0 at Walter Sisulu University Ibika Sports Campus Fields. Finally, Swartkops Valley United Brothers (SUBS) gave up a good fight after they went down 2-1 to Spears of the Nation FC at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Friday evening.

It appeared as though the teams were rusty following a very long season break. Furthermore, the high temperature readings had a negative impact on the impetus of the games. Real Strikers played to a 1-1 draw against Young Tigers, while Real Aces devastated City Rangers with their 2-0 victory. In a six-goal thrilling contest, Tomorrow Stars played to a 3-3 draw against the newly promoted side, Amathole FC. Highland Spurs started the season on a good note after they took another newly promoted side, Happy Stars, to the cleaners after they had thumped the Motherwell NU 29 side 3-0. MOFA Premier League reigning champions Manchester United, better known as Amarhamba, managed to earn an easy 2-0 triumph over Crystal Palace.
