INCORRECT ELECTRICITY TARIFF PLAN BILLING:

Problem with prepaid price THANDI SETOKOE

T

HE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) confirmed last Friday that over 30 000 residents were billed on a wrong tariff plan and has committed to recovering the outstanding monies resulting in a loss of close to R3 million.

NMBM spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki confirmed that prepaid electricity was indeed mistakenly sold at a lower and incorrect tariff plan, due to a technical error which occurred between twelve midnight on July 1 and 2:30pm on July 2. “Customers who made electricity purchases within this period would have been affected,” explained Mniki.

He said the municipality sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused during the recovery plan. “The municipality values and appreciates ratepayers. “It is their hard-earned money and their commitment to pay that keeps the city running and moving forward,” he said. On August 31, the municipality sent

tomers who have to repay less than R100 in order to inform them of the recovery deduction due in September this year. “Due to a technical error electricity was sold to you on 01/02 July 2017 at a lower tariff for meter no ……………..

Tromp, Chatty link roads launched REPORTER WITH a number of local roads currently in a dreadful state, the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s roads and transport directorate celebrated the launch of two roads, namely Tromp Street in Missionvale and Chatty Link Road in Chatty, on August 28. Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Councillor Athol Trollip was there to open both revamped roads officially. The day’s events started in Missionvale, where the municipality

surfaced a gravel road in Tromp and Seibritz Roads. This R10 million roads project included full surfacing with kerbing and the channelling of storm water. Tromp Road is 720m long, while Seibritz Road is 610m long. The Chatty Link Road is a new road, linked to the Bloemendal Arterial Road and Stanford Road. It provides safe pedestrian walkways for the people in these areas. “This is another important illustration that this administration is committed to ensuring that the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay receive quality service delivery,”

Trollip said. The road is 1.48km long. A total of 17 emerging contractors and local labour were sourced for the two projects. “The construction of these two roads will go a long way in improving the conditions of the lives of the respective communities. Now that we have these roads, it will also be easy for emergency vehicles like ambulances, police and fire vehicles to access these areas quickly.” He said the project was part of the metro’s “commitment to the creation of safer and caring communities”.

Tariff woes for prepaid electricity users Continued from page 1 “The total amount to be recovered is R …….. This amount will be recovered in September 2017. “Tel 087 742 0459 for more info. “Apologies for the inconvenience.” A similar message was also sent out to customers with more than R100 repayment, which further indicated that the owed amount will be apportioned and deducted in September and October. Mniki said that purchase patterns have revealed that the affected customers purchase their bulk monthly electricity in the begin-

SMS US

ning of each month, which makes the dates the best time to recover the loss to council. “This is a means to minimise the impact of the inconvenience caused to these customers,” Mniki explained. He added that residents can also look out for further communication regarding the recovery plan on their next electricity purchase on their electricity tokens. Below is a comparison of the correct and incorrect tariff plan applied on the above-mentioned dates. Correct tarriff plan 0 – 350 kWh at R1.4854 per kWh 351 – 600 kWh at R1.7927 per kWh

601 – 950 kWh at R1.9833 per kWh 951 + kWh at R2.0598 per kWh. Incorrect tarriff plan – 75 kWh at R0.9641 per kWh 76 – 350 kWh at R1.0585 per kWh 351 – 600 kWh at R1.7585 per kWh 601 – 950 kWh at R1.9833 per kWh 951 + kWh at R1.9833 per kWh – 350 kWh at R1.4854 per kWh 351 – 600 kWh at R1.7927 per kWh 601 – 950 kWh at R1.9833 per kWh 951 + kWh at R2.0598 per kWh “For further clarity and explanation customers are kindly requested to contact the WireIT 24/7 call centre on 087 742 0459,” Mniki said.

Bay innovators to benefit from international consortium REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay innovators will benefit from computer numerical control (CNC) technology funded by an international collaboration project between various South African and European universities. The two-year knowledge exchange project, which ends in October this year, focused on Entrepreneurship, Modernization and Innovation in South Africa (EMISHA) and was funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme. “Our involvement in the EMISHA project has enabled us to better serve our innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem, in line with global technology transfer best practice, while expanding our network of international peers for future partner-

ships,” said acting director of Nelson Mandela University’s innovation office, Leoné Nowell. As an EMISHA project partner, Nelson Mandela University’s innovation office was able to acquire the Stepcraft CNC machine, now housed at Propella Business Incubator due to their advanced manufacturing development focus, to enable innovators and incubatees in the sector to create low volume 3-D prototypes. “Propella wishes to thank the Nelson Mandela University for providing this facility that will complement our current service offering within the prototype laboratory. “This four-axis machining centre will now enable us to fine-tune prototypes and produce low volume ‘soft’ modules ideally suited for running preproduction trials,” said Propella’s senior industrial advisor, Grant

Minnie. One of the EMISHA project goals was to enhance effective universityindustry relationships with the intention of expediting the commercialisation of technologies and assisting innovators to reach the market sooner. The consortium delegates attended a workshop hosted at Propella in November last year and were impressed by the close working relationship between Nelson Mandela University and Propella Business Incubator. Project coordinator at Sweden’s Uppsala University international office Oddný Sverrisdóttir said they had learnt a great deal about the innovation and technology transfer space from the South African perspective through the EMISHA collaboration. < Photographed with the new Stepcraft CNC technology at the Propella Business Incubator from left are, Robert Bosch (Rubber Nano Products, Incubatee at Propella), Anita Palmer (Business Incubator manager, Propella) and Leoné Nowell (acting director, innovation office).

“Infrastruktuurprojekte is bykomend daartoe. Jy kan al die infrastruktuurprojekte bekend stel, maar as mense se manier van dink nie verander nie, sal hulle

die infrastruktuur verniel en beskadig.” Die voltooiingsdatum van die SPUU-projek is van Januarie 2018 tot Januarie 2020 uitgestel. Mali Mtima, woordvoerder van die Oos-Kaapse onderwysdepartement, sê die departement hou tot in die laatnag vergaderings om die probleem met deelnemende skole in Helenvale op te los.

This follows the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s (NMBBC) launch of the first of its kind new mobile app for an organised business association in the region. The NMBBC app is an innovative, user-friendly digital platform for business-to-business promotion in the Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas. A key feature of the app is a business directory, which connects app users with businesses in the region, who are members of the NMBBC. NMBBC president, Thomas Schaefer, said the NMBBC app is the dawning of an exciting new period for the Business Chamber. “The Business Chamber serves businesses in the city by offering a platform to connect with one another, in order to grow the local economy. “The app offers an exciting new platform to achieve both of these goals in an innovative manner.” He said remaining relevant is crucial not only for business organisations such as the Business Chamber, but for all the businesses operating in the current challenging economic

conditions in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Supporting our fellow businesses in the metro is essential to grow the local economy and I encourage all members to do business with one another via our app,” Schaefer added. He further added that while the app is free to download from the Apple store and android play store for anyone eager to do business in Nelson Mandela Bay, a listing on the app is exclusively available to Business Chamber members only. “This listing not only recognises businesses who are in good standing as members of the Business Chamber, but also offers additional exposure as a value-added benefit to our entire database of members,” he said. Acting CEO Prince Matonsi said

the business-to-business app encourages local business interaction between big and small businesses. “The app also offers an exclusive platform for smaller members to market themselves, which is affordable and user friendly, while big businesses, who are feeling the pressures of the new B-BBEE codes and other local procurement legislation, can make use of the app to find an array of diverse, local suppliers,” Matonsi explained. In addition, other free functionalities of the app include an easy way to stay in touch with the Nelson Mandela Bay business fraternity – including the latest events hosted by the Business Chamber and the latest business news of what is happening in the city.

Selfs in Gelvandale, waar ek weekliks tonele moet bywoon waar kinders betrokke is . . . . andersins sal ek dit nooit kan dra nie. Dis my oplossing; dis my geheim.”

Port Elizabeth. According to the Al Fidaa Foundation, the reason the students are taught to bake various treats is because it offers them the chance to start their own business by becoming home bakers. “They do not need a formal education to earn a stable income and they can start a business without worrying about large overhead costs. There are also many items a home baker can make without the use of an oven or blender, which many of the students do not own. Each four-week course teaches six disadvantaged students from Nelson Mandela Bay from Monday to Thursday. The Al Fidaa Foundation will also be hosting a workshop to teach the mastering of buttercream skills for cupcakes on Fridays from September 8. All the proceeds generated by these workshops will be ploughed back into the School of Baking. For more info contact Clare Russell or Taufeeqah Erasmus (administrator) on 041 484 1288.

Art students donate sketches to raise funds for church THANDI SETOKOE

The head of department for the NMU Faculty of Arts, Dr Pieter Binsbergen, said he didn’t even have to think twice when he was approached by Bosman asking whether the art school would be interested in assisting with donating student artworks. “NMU and the art department prides itself in being involved with community-based incentives as it allows students to engage with ‘real life’ creative endeavours outside the studios and lecture halls of the university,” he explained. “The cathedral offered us a ‘real life’ drawing experience and in return the students offered two drawings each (A3 size) to the art exhibition free of charge (100% of sales to the cathedral).” The senior lecturer further explained that a third A2 drawing was retained for the art students’ evaluation portfolio. “Our approach of taking the students out of the studio and into the ‘real space’ is simply because we do not encourage copying techniques from photographs and prints,” Binsbergen said. He added that the initiative afforded students the opportunity to engage with the public as artists and more importantly see how their craft could be put to use in serving the greater community. “The project was a huge success and I am negotiating with Patty to make this a yearly calendar event which not only offers us a wider drawing opportunity but speaks to the business of sustainability. “The students would stand to benefit in the long run and the cathedral would in turn have the opportunity to continue generating funds, which to my mind seems to be an ongoing endeavour,” he added. Bosman commended the students, “Their excellent art work has captured the beauty of the church for all to see,” she said. The sketches will be on sale at the art exhibition which will take place from 9:30am to 3:30pm.

THE third-year Nelson Mandela University (NMU) art students have been hard at work, sketching various aspects of the cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, for an art exhibition at the St Mary’s Cathedral Church in Central on Saturday. “It is hoped that this will be a wonderful opportunity for the art students to showcase their work to the public and at the same time create an awareness of the beauty of the magnificent Cathedral of St Mary’s which was built and completed in 1895,” council member of St Mary’s Cathedral Patty Bosman said. “Being situated in the city, in St Mary’s Terrace, St Mary’s is sadly often forgotten or even unknown to many Port Elizabethans,” she added. The art exhibition is aimed at generating much-needed funds for the maintenance of the church building.

The age categories for the competition are zero to six months, seven to 12 months, 13 to 18 months and 19 to 24 months. All the ages are based on the baby’s age on the date of entry. The top 10 finalists from each age category will be chosen, from which the top three will be announced at a fun-filled prize-giving event, hosted by Algoa FM’s Briony Sparg. Fantastic prizes will be awarded to all 40 finalists, winners and runners-up, proudly sponsored by Bargain Books, Dischem, Cherubs, Kodak Express, Dischem, Edgars, Toddlers Workshop, Execuspecs, Baby Builders, Dulce Café, Baby Gym, Francarlo Designer Goldsmith, Wild Heart Photography, Rain Created for Living and Medela.

The cost per entry is R50, of which R5 is donated to Isithembiso Babies Home. Deveda Bloem, marketing manager of Walmer Park Shopping Centre, said, “Each year, as part of the ‘feel good’ element of the competition, we strive to assist a babies home in our city. “This year we have committed to support Isithembiso Babies Home in Miramar.” Isithembiso Babies Home officially opened its doors on November 1, 2005, and has been caring for abused and abandoned babies for the past 12 years. Isithembiso is a place of safety for children between the ages of zero and three years who have been abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned. ADVERTORIAL: WHEELCHAIR WEDNESDAY

Reverend shares his experience WHEELCHAIR Wednesday, an initiative steered by the Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD) in the Nelson Mandela Bay, challenges present and future business and community leaders to spend four hours in a wheelchair. Facing the same challenges that many people who use wheelchairs experience on a daily basis, it is their hope that Nelson Mandela Bay’s leaders will focus more attention on improving accessibility within all aspects of the city. Week four got off to a rather wettish start. The 30 nervous participants in this week’s Wheelchair Wednesday Four Hour Challenge soon started concentrating on factors within their surroundings that previously went unnoticed. Rev Aydn Wilson commented, “No amount of chatting to other folk regarding this challenge could ever compare to the actual experience itself. What do I mean? “Well for starters, the awareness of the slightest bump or incline came with a magnification I could never have imagined. “The limitations of being confined to the wheelchair and the thought that this is what many folk have to experience permanently gave me a sense of respect and admiration for the apparatus-dependent folk in our community. “They may be seen as physically disabled, but I see them as being among the strongest, from a mental fitness and determination point of view. The first challenge came as we departed and moved off to our vehicles. “There was no ramp nearby so that we could get from the pavement to the parking lot. I asked the car guard where the ramp was and was told it was some distance further down. “So, a disabled person needs to go three times the distance to get off the pavement! “Tell an able-bodied person to walk the distance and no doubt the moaning will be substantial. Oh boy, what a wake-up call for

me. At the police station I encountered a minor bump in the ramp half way up as the structure appears to have moved/been cracked and caused a height difference. This was a challenge for me and I needed help to navigate over it. A simple bit of masonry work would solve it. But this is not something I would ever have noticed before.” Wilson continued, “At the Sunridge Shopping Centre, the bathroom break came with an unexpected twist. The disabled toilet was right on hand (Smiley face) and easily accessible, but the problem was that I had to go in backwards if I need to use the toilet in my “disabled state”. Is this how it is for the disabled folk wanting to go to the bathroom at other venues as well? “Tell an able-bodied person that to save costs, the toilets will be narrowed and you have to enter backwards! Was it just my stupidity or lack of experience but I tried for some time and this was the only way I could see it would work.”

Rev Aydn Wilson, ably assisted by Gerrie van der Voorst, takes on the dreaded ramp.

Biathlon kicks off with a bang REPORTER THE first Biathlon League race of the season took place this past weekend in perfect sunny weather. Vice-chairman Shaun Richter said despite many athletes still being busy with their school winter sports programmes, the turnout was promising. “The exciting multisport includes running and swimming and is suitable for all ages. “This will be the second season of under eight athletes being included in the sport and it was exciting to see five- and six-year-olds taking part in the 400m run and 25m swim,” he explained. The run took place at the Westbourne Oval, while the swimming followed at the Newton Park Swimming Pool.

Richter said, considering it was the first race of the season, there were some impressive performances. Young Danny Baxter got the day off to a win in the under eight boys division and Minette van Zyl won the same age group for the girls. Nathan Appels and Lisa de Villiers were the boy and girl winners in the under nine division. Lieben Bester won the boys under 11 division on the back of a fantastic run and Abigail Holderness won the girls under 11 division. Ruan le Roux dominated the boys under 13 race with massive wins in both the run and the swim, while fellow Summerwood pupil, Anke Serfontein, also won the run and the swim to claim first place for the under 13 girls. Other winners among the older female athletes were Kerri-lee Barnard (u/15), Karla Scheffer (u/17), Chane Petzer (u/19), Jane

Holderness (junior veteran) and Sunelle Horn (veteran). Among the boys the winners were as follows, Wehan Smith (u/15), Damien Smith (u/17), Jano Agenbag (u/19) and Simon Holderness (junior veteran). Sixty-three-year-old Margie Saunders not only won the ladies masters division but also broke the South African record (unofficial when going to press). “With athletes from 19 different schools taking part, ages ranging from five to 63 and more than five families with two or more athletes taking part (one family had mom, dad and all three daughters taking part), EP Biathlon truly is the premier family sport in the Port Elizabeth area. While EP hosts the 2019 SA Champs, now is the ideal time to start Biathlons,” Richter said. The next league event will take place on September 16.

Blue Ribbon donates kit to sports club SELBY MADIKANE LUCK shined on the newly established Seven Sundowns Sports Club after well-known bread company, Blue Ribbon, sponsored kits to the Motherwell NU 7 multisports club during a function that was held at Khulile Primary School on Saturday. Blue Ribbon, which falls under Premier Foods, is based in Lindsay Road, Korsten. According to Blue Ribbon area sales supervisor Monwabisi Davids, the company decided to stretch their hand out to a club that had nothing but still developed youth grassroots sports. Davids said, “Seven Sundowns Sports Club secretary Vumile Madikane and the trustee Lunga Magada revealed to Blue Ribbon manager Enrico Windwaai and sales manager Charl de Lange that they had only one soccer kit that was used by its soccer teams which are u/11, u/13, u/15 and senior team, as well as by its senior netball team. Enrico and Charl were

touched by the way things were going at Seven Sports Club. “Therefore, our company agreed in principle that it would purchase two kits per team. “After agreeing with the club, our company decided to buy kits for the u/11, u/13 and netball first teams and then the next kit will be purchased for Seven Sundowns. Our company adds value to the community sports club. “We as Blue Ribbon uplift the standard of living of the people who are less fortunate. Our company products make profits for us, but part of that is allocated to community social investment. “We will keep our relationship healthy with Seven Sundowns as they support us.” ANC Ward 56 sports head Monde Tsoko hailed Blue Ribbon for the role they had played in injecting funds into grassroots sport. Tsoko said, “Blue Ribbon is not only concerned with making profits, but they plough back to the community. This company deserves an accolade. The players must appreciate what

their management is doing for them. “These players must take very serious and they should refrain from using drugs.” Sundowns deputy chairman Mncedisi Thomas said that Blue Ribbon made a huge difference to the club. “One thing that made me worried was when all our teams used the only kit we have on the same day. Blue Ribbon has come to our rescue and our worries are no more. “Our players’ morale is now boosted by Blue Ribbon,” Thomas said. “Our community has committed itself to support Blue Ribbon because this company has restored our club’s dignity. “We have knocked on many doors of the business people in Motherwell asking for a kit, but they turned down our application. I am delighted that our sports club is growing very fast. We have soccer u/9, netball u/13, basketball, chess, taebo dancers, rugby u/15, cricket, boxing, karate and swimming, but all these teams have no kits and balls or any other equipment.”

Palace bags three points from Real Aces SELBY MADIKANE CRYSTAL Palace dug deep to overcome Real Aces 2-1 during their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League clash that was played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Palace noticed that Aces’ defence was jittery and pounced to score their opening goal. Thamsanqa Smith came up with Palace’s opening goal early in the first half. Palace searched for their second goal with Aces’ defenders making mistakes in their crucial first third of the field. Andile Majali found the back of the net after Aces’ defenders failed to communicate with their goalkeeper. Palace were 2-0 ahead of Aces until the end of the first chapter. Aces rushed things in the second half and failed to score clear-cut chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The goal finally came courtesy of Sixolile Daweti. The game ended 2-1 in favour of Crystal Palace. Liverpool caused a major upset when they defeated the title contenders, City Rangers, 1-0 in their tough battle. Liverpool’s goal came courtesy of Azola Ntsabo. Liverpool’s 16-year-old midfielder, Hlumelo Makalima, and Simthembile Dzuyi Quluba were the most instrumental players that contributed to their side’s victory.

Fondini leads men’s team to FIBA Afrobasket 2017 games SELBY MADIKANE ONE of Nelson Mandela Bay’s most prominent basketball figures, Sibongile Fondini, has been appointed as the head of delegation (HOD) by the Basketball South Africa national executive council (BSA NEC) to lead the BSA Men’s national basketball team when they participate in the 29th FIBA Afrobasket Men 2017 from this Friday until September 16. According to the Fondini, who is the BSA deputy president and Nelson Mandela Bay general secretary, a total of 16 countries have already booked a place to participate in the major event. Fondini said, “The countries that will take each other on are Nigeria, DR Congo, Mali, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Central African Republic, Angola, Morocco,

Uganda, Tunisia, Guinea, Rwanda, Cameroon, Senegal, Mozambique and Egypt. “Our team last qualified for the Afrobasket Men tournament in 2011 in Madagascar. South Africa is in Group D, together with Senegal, Egypt, Mozambique and Egypt. I am very happy to announce that our team is more than ready after we have worked very hard in the camp.” Fondini added, “It is such a great honour and high recognition for any sport administrator to be appointed as an HOD for a national team going to take part in such a prestigious continental competition as the Afrobasket Men. “In 2015, I led our National Basketball Women’s Team that participated in Cameroon in 2015. In June this year, I led our national men’s team to the BRICS Games in which they went home with bronze medals.”
