State funding woes for NPOs THANDI SETOKOE

T

HE Eastern Cape Democratic Alliance (DA) has committed to fighting for the fair funding of the province’s non profit organisations (NPOs) in order to ensure that the most vulnerable members of society receive help.

This comes after a motion tabled by the DA’s Eastern Cape shadow MEC for Social Development, Kobus Botha, in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in Bhisho, was halted in its tracks by the ANC as the majority party recently. Botha expressed concern that the NPOs rendering various critical and specialised

services, such as social welfare services to children on behalf of the Department of Social Development, would have to wait much longer for their much-needed funds. “The Christelike Maatskaplike Raad (CMR) in Port Elizabeth is still owed R1.9 million since the beginning of the financial year 2017/2018.

“Organisations such as CMR, Child Welfare and many others render services to children in need of care, abused women, the vulnerable and the elderly,” Botha explained. He said the impact of not being able to render these services could see children, women and the elderly being left on the streets in dangerous situations. Continued on page 2

Schools face investigation after corporal punishment reports THANDI SETOKOE THE Eastern Cape Education Department’s head of department (HoD), Themba Kojana, has expressed his dismay in the recent spate of corporal punishment in Port Elizabeth, the former Mount Frere, and East London education districts, despite the banning of it in the country 21 years ago. Konjana said the administration and practices of this punitive measure in some schools within the province had not only dismayed but entirely embar-

Continued from page 1 “I tabled this motion in the sincere hope of getting all political parties to agree on the prioritisation of payments to outstanding NPOs as a matter of urgency, as the budget was passed four months ago by the Eastern Cape Legislature,” he added. “I was also hoping to get the support of all the legislature members to instruct the department, through this motion, to seriously focus on and fix their broken systems that cause endless delays in transferring much-needed funds to qualifying NPOs timeously.” Magdelena von Solms, the regional head of CMR in Port Elizabeth, said they had received the service level agreement regarding subsidy adjustment.

School of Baking

The Al Fidaa School of Baking opened on the 7 August 2017. The 4 week Home Bakers Course is offered free without any fees or payment to 6 students of disadvantaged communities who are inexperienced in baking and decorating. Students are tutored by a graduate of Capsicum Culinary Studio and taught how to bake and decorate cupcakes, cakes and biscuits. This course allows them to earn an income from home immediately. Products baked by the students are donated weekly to Old Age Homes and Orphanages in Port Elizabeth. We would really appreciate any contribution [donations, baking equipment and ingredients, vouchers, recipe books, etc.] for our School of Baking and for the 6 students who graduate monthly.

We intend offering a 4 lesson course in September on a Friday morning from 9am to 11am in mastering buttercream skills for cupcakes. This will be a paid course, so that funds can be generated for the School of Baking. Maximum of 8 students will be taught per lesson. Registration is now open. Call Clare Russell [Tutor] or Taufeeqah Erasmus [Administrator] on 041 484 1288 or email alfidaabaking@telkomsa.net for any further information. We are situated at 12 Market Street, North End, Port Elizabeth. View our website for more information on any of our projects: www.alfidaa.co.za

“This is really worrying to me because those educators may lose their jobs,” he said. He further added that anyone found guilty of the practice was contravening both the South African Schools Act and supremely the Constitution of the Republic. “Chapter two, in Section 10 of the South African Schools Act states that the act is prohibited in our schools and any person who contravenes it is guilty of an offence and is liable for conviction to a sentence which could be imposed for assault.”

rassed the province. Last week a Port Elizabeth principal from Kwamagxaki High School was caught on video beating at least three matric pupils with a thin plastic pipe, supposedly for failing to attend the school’s winter holiday programme. Konjana said the department could no longer let the issue go unnoticed, stating that investigations were under way against all the schools that had reportedly been practising corporal punishment. “Action will be taken against the individuals who are found guilty.

“The signed agreement was submitted to the Department of Social Development last week. We are expecting to receive subsidy payments within the next four weeks,” she said. “We are running our organisations now for the fifth month without government subsidies.” Provincial board member of Child Welfare Magdelena Ritter echoed Von Solms statement that subsidies to the NPO sector contribute not only towards social workers’ salaries but to the administration portion as well. “Therefore, the subsidy per post needs to be substituted by the organisation and operational costs have to be fundraised in order to sustain services,” Ritter said. She said, according to the signed service level agreement between both parties, it was stated that subsidies would

no longer be paid monthly as in the past but three months in advance. “Since June 2016 this has not materialised.” Botha said that the late payment of funds has become a trend over the last three years and no efforts have been made to speed up or to make the system more efficient in order to get funds to qualifying NPOs. Spokesperson for the Department of Social Development Mzukisi Solani said all the payments for the first quarter, ending June 2017, were made to more than 3 000 NPOs amounting to over R82 million.” He said R54 million was already handed over in the second quarter. He added that there were still close to 2 000 outstanding claims for payment which are at different stages in terms of processing.

Een so ’n kantoor is onlangs in Rocky Bay in KwaZulu-Natal geopen.

REPORTER AFTER more than a year, the restoration of the Campanile in Central is finally complete and it is once again open for business. Some of the new features of the Campanile include an interactive visual technology array dubbed ‘Ghost Bells’ – bell proxies installed under the actual bell carillon which visually light up during chiming or when visitors press the keys of an interactive silver console to match the pitch of a key with the corresponding bell. Another addition includes the harbour viewing window, an observation deck capsule at the top of the 50m Campanile memorial, suspending visitors in the sky when they overlook the Port Elizabeth harbour. Other features, such as a silver plaque on the 67th step of the 204 steps spiralling staircase to acknowledge Nelson Mandela’s 67 years in service of democracy, has also been included as a new feature of the building. The Campanile is open for tours to all the members of the public and visitors from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 9pm to 3pm. For bookings contact Route 67 tour guide Tony Neveling on 082 464 6022.

Become a superhero with St Francis Hospice fundraiser REPORTER ST Francis Hospice recently launched their Superhero Lollipop fundraising drive as part of the Hospice Hero campaign and call on all Nelson Mandela Bay residents to support their cause. St Francis Hospice provides comprehensive home-based care and support to some 400 patients in the final stages of lifethreatening illnesses like cancer, HIV/ Aids, motor neurone disease and tuberculosis at no cost to them. “Most of our patients cannot afford medical aid and only wish to spend their last few days at home. We as the hospice make sure that their wishes are granted and provide them with highly skilled and caring doctors, nurses and volunteers who visit them on a weekly, if not daily, basis to en-

sure they are comfortable and to ease their pain,” said St Francis Hospice’s Lynn van Vuuren. It costs the hospice an average of R1 200 per month to assist a patient. Since the inception of the Hospice Hero campaign three years ago, they have raised nearly R3 million to support their patients. They launched the Superhero Lollipop drive about two weeks ago and have already sold more than 1 000. “Our aim is to sell 50 000 suckers, which will bring in a much-needed nearly R250 000 for the hospice,” Van Vuuren said. In addition to selling the lollipops at various SPAR outlets in the Nelson Mandela Bay, the dedicated staff of St Francis Hospice will also be selling them at local

events. The fundraising drive will run until October 10, which marks World Palliative and Hospice Care Day. They also invite businesses to purchase the Superhero Lollipops and wear a superhero outfit on October 13 in honour of Hospice Day. Participating SPAR outlets include 1st Avenue Walmer, Mount Pleasant, Sunridge, Summerbreeze, Linton Grange, Bluewater Bay, Jeffreys Bay, Beetlestone, Burt Drive and Stadium. All proceeds will be donated to St Francis Hospice. To purchase the lollipops in bulk or become a Hospice Hero contact Lynn van Vuuren on 041 360 7070 or lynn@stfrancishospice.za.org

Music veteran makes a difference in community THANDI SETOKOE NEW Brighton-born music veteran Sizwe Zako is ploughing back into the community by offering lessons in different musical instruments to disadvantaged youth in the area. Known as a household name throughout the Southern African region and awarded a lifetime achievement award at the MTN South African Music Awards (SAMAs) in 2013, the gospel music producer has worked as a keyboard player, composer and producer for the likes of the late Vuyo Mokoena, Rebecca Malope, Ebony, Pastor Khaya Mayedwa and many more. Speaking to Express he narrated a story of a young lady who, while jogging past the beach one morning, came across abalones on the beach. “She became worried because it

was a very hot day and was concerned that the abalones would die due to the heat. So, one by one she started throwing them back into the sea. “Asked by a friend why she was bothering (with what she considered to be a fruitless exercise), as there were too many of them, she replied, “the few that I have thrown back into the sea will be saved,” he concluded. Zako said the story really touched him. “It brought me to the realisation that there are many people in need, but the few that I can reach out to, I will be able to help and make a difference in their lives.” The singer, who is credited with lifting gospel music’s profile in South Africa, is now hoping to pave the way for aspiring music artists. “By opening my doors I am hoping to give children from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance of fulfilling

their dreams. In as much as there is loads of talent in the Eastern Cape, most of the youngsters cannot afford to go all the way to Johannesburg in order break into the music industry.” Currently he is working with 20 aspiring artists. “We meet up every Monday and Wednesday and I am hoping that as time goes by young girls will also be encouraged to come as well because at the moment it’s only boys.” One of the students, Luxolo Mjuleni, said it was an honour and privilege to be able to work with a man of such calibre. “Opportunities such as this one are hard to come by. “I will surely share all that I have learnt with other aspiring artists in the years to come,” Mjuleni said. Another student, Malibongwe Cukula, who is an aspiring musician, said, “I cannot wait to release my own

album.” Zako said he is now in talks with the Nelson Mandela University in the hope of getting their support. “I have written to them asking for assistance in mentorship. “If they can at least send one or two music teachers from the institution even if it’s once a week to come and tutor them, it would be greatly appreciated.

“These children really need a lot of help.” Known for having one of the best local recording studios, he also produces for local church choirs, “We have also started a children’s choir here in Nikiwe Street. “I am a very spiritual person and it has always been my wish to give back to my community.”

ROSLYN BAATJIES HY is mal oor Tom and Jerry en is ’n “blommeman”. “My ma was ’n onderwyseres by die plaasskool.

“In 1994 was ons so 450 leerlinge. En vanaf 1997 het ek probeer om die skool te transformeer en vandag staan ons op 731 leerlinge. “Die grootste uitdaging was om te bevestig dat daar net een kleur by Westview is; die Westviewkleur. Ek het geen wit, bruin, swart, geel, pienk of pers leerlinge nie. Hier is net leerlinge en net onderwysers in my skool.”

As ek rêrig wil ontspan, kyk ek Tom and Jerry.” Zietsman is ook lief vir blomme. “Ek kan nie operate sonder blomme om my nie. Dit bring ’n rustigheid in my.” Wat gaan hy die meeste mis? “My personeel, want leerlinge kom en gaan. Personeel bly.” Hy is vasbeslote dat hy nie op 1 September by die skool sal opdaag nie.

PORT Elizabeth-based training and production company, Radio Active Productions Publishing, recently announced the launch of a brand-new online radio station, The Wireless, which will be broadcasting from September 1. Established to provide a platform to showcase talent and training, The Wireless exists to connect people. They profile artists, presenters and producers and provide high quality programming with a rich variety of broadcast content. Unlike conventional radio stations, The Wireless programming is unique in that it is designed with the specific purpose of profiling the presenter and producers that create it. Talent is nurtured through training and mentorship and a platform is provided to give presenters and producers a chance to be recognised in the industry and have a creative outlet for what they love. The Wireless management, therefore, works with a view that most, if not all, presenters and shows will be snapped up by other radio stations looking for capable media professionals. Powered by NetDynamix, listeners of The Wireless can expect diverse programming across the board from niche shows to mainstream topics. Launching online on September 1 with the first show, Sonically Sound, brought to listeners by DJ Elansonic, The Wireless offers something to suit everyone’s taste. The Wireless presenter line-up brings fresh new voices, as well as some local celebrities that will be in the mix. A panel of judges will choose nine (9) finalists once entries have closed. FOCUS ON: WOMEN’S MONTH

Embrace your inner strength and independence ANIKA DE BEER AS the end of Women’s Month draws near, the focus is once again slowly moving away from what used to be perceived as the weaker gender. Though women have slowly been eradicating that stereotype over the years, proving themselves capable of doing nearly everything men can and a few other things they cannot, many are still victims of abuse and oppression. This year’s Women’s Month has seen an unusual amount of marches and protests taking place, all fighting the rapid increase in the abuse of women and children. Several churches, organisations and groups are hosting workshops, meetings and other events to empower women, inform them of their rights and encourage them to become independent. And what better time to embrace your innate feminine strength and tenacity as a woman than during Women’s Month? One stellar example of independent women thriving in what is widely regarded as a man’s world, is the Atlas Security Control Room, a call centre that is manned predominantly by women. Of the 74 staff members at the control centre, 62 are women. According to Liza von Loggenberg, control room manager, the call centre staff mainly consists of women because “women tend to have more patience; they understand and have empathy. Women also stay calm in stressful situations.” Von Loggenberg started working at the call centre 17 years ago as a controller. She believes they truly make a difference in soci-

ety in general. “Ranging from being just an ear to listen to and being the bridge between the client and the response, we are usually the ones who more often than not resolve many issues over the phone without the need for response to get involved,” she said. Control centre operators receive a minimum of eight weeks’ training and are required to pass pre-employment and random polygraph tests. They deal with a wide variety of situations, including break-ins, house robberies,

domestic violence and vehicle accidents. “Although we do not measure the ratio of calls between men and women, I can say that it is often women with whom we deal, because they are usually more sensitive,” Von Loggenberg said. Bernadette Nel-Naude, Atlas Security’s community development manager, added, “Women are perceived as soft targets and often put themselves in positions to be potentially victimised. Any situation that makes you feel uncomfortable you should react too. No matter how silly you might feel. Rather be safe than sorry!”

Bernadette Nel-Naude, Atlas Security’s community development manager. PHOTO:PHOTO24 She frequently conducts safety workshops and talks for women and acts as the voice of Atlas Security in the Nelson Mandela Bay. She has been with Atlas for 11 years, having started out as a freelance representative. “I work extensively with our operations

team on the road as well, which allows me to understand threat and crime trends.” Nel-Naude provided a few safety tips for women: ) The first line of defence is always awareness. Always be aware of your surroundings. ) There is safety in numbers. ) When you go out at night, stay in groups ) Always keep your vehicle doors and windows closed. ) Park close to your destination and in a well-lit area. ) Know the routes that you are driving. ) Know your route to the nearest police station. ) Keep your cellphone charged. ) Always keep your car keys with you. ) Do not engage with strangers. ) Arm yourself with pepper spray. ) Make sure you keep doors and windows secured at home as well. ) Know the location of your panic buttons. ) Arm you alarm. ) Trust your instincts. “As a woman in a mainly male-dominated industry, Women’s Month resonates deeply within me as we acknowledge and celebrate the strength, tenacity and diversity of women and how we are able to be nurturers, wives, business women and fierce decisionmakers all-in-one, while making a difference and building a better future for our children. “Once again confirming that as a woman, you are powerful, but as a sisterhood, we are unstoppable,” she concluded. In the event of an emergency, contact the Atlas Security control room on 0861 585 585.

er started the initiative many years ago, but over the years the interest from the youth had waned. “We wanted to revive the sport. So, we spread the word and we quickly had a bunch of enthusiastic children who wanted to join in,” said Ross. Gardiner is part of the coaching squad along with former EP golfers Granwell Gelderbloem and Levi’s Scott. The Varsvlei Golf Club was officially launched on Women’s Day, August 9 with a 9-hole tournament. “We welcome everybody, especially women and girls, to join this club. “We, however, only have two sets of golf clubs that we have to share among 20 players, so we are appealing to anyone who can donate second-hand equipment,” Gelderbloem said. For more info contact Roslyn Ross on 071 067 3985 or Granwell Gelderbloem on 071 949 6932.

CHILDREN, especially in the disadvantaged areas, need to know that there are other sports besides team sports such as rugby, cricket and soccer. It is with this in mind that a group of Sanctor residents formed the Varsvlei Golf Club, where children as young as six years old learn about the ins and outs of a sport which has been perceived as an older person’s game. Roslyn Ross, spokesperson for the Varsvlei Golf Club, said that with two EP golf players in their midst, they aim to develop the sport in their area. “We have children who walk from as far as Salt Lake to come and play golf with us every day. It shows you just how passionate they are about the sport,” she said. According to Ross, Sylvester Gardin-

Candy Africander (15) and Tyreeq Ruiters (16) spend all their free time playing golf.

peers in an effort to overcome social ills by acting out the challenges they face in their everyday lives. The drama festival will give them a platform to showcase their plays to their peers and the public. The highlight of the festival will be the performance of Masifunde’s spectacular and funfilled show Themba’s Dream. Themba dreams of one day flying an aircraft and diving deep into the blue sky and leaving all the troubles of the township behind. As he stands at the fence, looking at the airport, behind him are shacks and multitudes of hopeless children whose dreams are perishing before their eyes.

The production seeks to encourage every child who has ever had a dream to keep praying and working hard until achievement comes knocking. The cast consists of 40 young singers and 18 actors from Walmer Township. The play was written and directed by Xabiso Zweni, with music from Sivuyile Scott. Themba’s Dream has already enjoyed great success at this year’s National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The youth drama festival, consisting of 10 plays, will take place on September 9 at the PE Opera House from 11am to 6pm. Entry is free. Themba’s Dream will take place from 5pm to 6pm.

Pupils excel in A+ Students’ National Competition REPORTER THREE Port Elizabeth learners participated in the A+ Students’ 11th National Competition at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Saturday, August 17. The youngest of the three was eight-year-old, Mitchell Hartney, from Sunridge Primary School. Together with Timothy Teulon (11) from Woodridge, Hartney was a champion winner. Julian Teulon (9) from Woodridge came in second place and received a silver trophy in his division. Over 700 participants took part in the event, ranging from as

young as four to 12 years of age. The candidates were selected from each of the nine provinces as the top learners from around South Africa. In order to compete in the prestigious event the learners were required to meet a qualifying criteria. The competition comprised of six examination papers in the children’s division, comprising of three examination papers of one minute each for mental arithmetic calculations and three papers of three minutes per paper for the examinations where learners could make use of their soroban (Japanese abacus). Mitchell’s mother, Abigail Hartney, described how her son had shown interest in mathematics from a young age. “He always wanted to know more and wanted to do more difficult calculations. Mitchell does not realise the magnitude of his achievement yet. For him it was just a few sums and now it is over, said the proud mother. Amanda Mortimer, master sensei at A+ students, said the

three learners had been in the programme since 2015. Mortimer said it was very rewarding to see the progress they had made in terms of the speed in which they could do complex mental arithmetic sums and the level at which they competed nationally. “This will hold them in good stead to possibly qualify for the international PAMA competition to be held in Malaysia in 2018. “Our international competition will be held in South Africa on December 28. “Participants from 17 different countries such as the USA, Canada and India will compete in this event, Mortimer said. “A+Students is a Japanese method of education that teaches children as young as 30 months to solve complex arithmetic problems by playing with educational toys like the soroban and our A play maths range of educational toys. A+Students improves concentration and boosts selfconfidence, improves intelligence and creates a love for Maths.

ADVERTORIAL: WHEELCHAIR WEDNESDAY

City leaders experience four hours in wheelchairs WEEK 3 of Wheelchair Wednesday saw some of the city leaders “put their money where their mouth is”. The Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, committed, at the 2016 Wheelchair Wednesday handover ceremony, that he and his municipal mayoral committee would spend their time in a wheelchair

during the 2017 campaign. At this ceremony 150 wheelchairs, generated through the APD Nelspon Mandela Bay’s unique Wheelchair Wednesday project, were handed to needy Bay citizens. Nervously clutching to the four-hour task sheet issued by the APD Wheelchair Wednesday team, with feet tightly strapped together, the four teams of city leaders, together with 20 other city business and community leaders, set out from the starting point in Newton Park to tackle various “every day” tasks. APD Nelson Mandela Bay’s Brett Marshall reported that it didn’t take long for feedbacks to flow in from participants. MMC Werner Senekal simply commented, “Eye-opener!”. MMC for safety and security, John Best, reported, “I soon discovered that the ramps at some of the public facilities are a lot steeper when tackled from the seat of a wheelchair.” Best once again confirmed his ongoing commitment to fight the unacceptable abuse of the disabled parking bays. Executive director of APD Nelson Mandela Bay Brian Bezuidenhout commented, “Wheelchair Wednesday, sponsored by SPAR Eastern Cape, Nelson Mandela Stadium and Network 21, is an initiative that creates awareness and encourages universal accessibility on matters pertaining to persons with disabilities. “The 150 wheelchairs used by the participants during the month-long campaign will be handed over to needy Nelson Mandela Bay citizens at the Handover Function which will take place on September 20 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.” Bezuidenhout added, “We still have a commitment from our executive mayor to spend time in the wheelchair during the 2017 campaign, so watch this space.”

SUBS draw 11 with Spurs in showstealing clash SELBY MADIKANE SWARTKOPS Valley United Brothers (SUBS) and Highland Spurs played their hearts out in a 1-1 draw in front of enthusiastic supporters during their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. According to soccer experts, the game between SUBS and Spurs has so far been the game of the season. The tempo of the game was very fast from the first whistle. SUBS goal poacher Sakhumzi Moyikwa was rewarded with a spectacular goal. Title chasers Highland Spurs did all they could to draw level, but the veteran defenders, Monde Tsoko and Bongani Balurha, stood their ground. Moyikwa nearly scored his second goal, but

Spurs’ goalkeeper, Mzwandile Ntlaki, showed he had class. Spurs’ seasoned midfielder, Thanduxolo Somhlaba, found the back of the net when he beat SUBS’ goalkeeper, Siyabulela Shumpa, to even the score. Shumpa denied Spurs their second goal after he fingertipped Qhamani Zumani’s powerful header in the dying stages of the match. Spurs’ skipper, Sibusiso Rhee Mabengu, rounded two defenders, but Balurha managed to avert the danger. JK Structures bring hope to community sports club SELBY MADIKANE IT WAS all smiles and joy on the faces of the parents and players of Seven Sundowns Sports Club in Motherwell NU 7 after JK Structures made a donation in the form of a soccer kit during a function at Khulile Primary School on Saturday.

According to the company’s owner, Cameron Klopper, Seven Sundowns Sports Club management keeps the youth off the street. Klopper said, “The club management is doing the good work to save the lives of the youth and is making a significant change in the community of the people who have nothing at all.” Klopper sponsored a new kit that is branded with the Seven Sundowns logo, its name and his company’s information as a symbol of showing that his company is committed to making a difference in the lives of the residents of the poor communities. Klopper said that he was very excited that Sundowns Sports Club had a new kit that

will boost the confidence of the players. Sundowns Sports Club treasurer Melikhaya Bangani stated that the club’s secretary, Vumile Madikane, explained their club’s challenges to Klopper. “Our club had only one soccer kit that was used by all its five teams and its netball team. It is unhygienic to wear the kit that is wet with somebody’s sweat. “That was the order of the day in our club, but today that is a thing of the past. “Mr Klopper has stretched his helpful hands and he has bought new kit for our senior team that is made up of u/17s. I strongly believe that the future of our club is very bright because all our players are learners. “I want to thank Mr Klopper and JK Structures for adding hope to the less fortunate club. “The players are highly fired up and the parents also appreciate with love the contribution that has been made by JK Structures. “We are over the moon and we express our heartfelt thanks to Mr Klopper and his company JK Structures,’’ said Bangani.

Department tournament is a success SELBY MADIKANE THE Motherwell NU 1 and NU 2 Stadiums turned out to be the hives of activity when a tournament hosted by the Department of Education took place there last Wednesday. According to education development officer (EDO) Andile Ace Nogaga, the paramount objective of the tournament was to provide learners, who are under the age of 20, an opportunity to participate in netball, rugby and soccer. In the rugby games, James Jolobe High School went down 3-0 to Ncedo High School, while Ndyebo High School succumbed 6-5 to

Soqhayisa High School. Mfesane High School defeated Cingani High School 6-5 and Masiphathisane High School overcame Motherwell High School 9-6 on penalties after a 10-10 fulltime draw. In the soccer division, Ncedo High School advanced to the semi-finals after they had defeated Ndyebo High School 2-0, while Soqhayisa High School handed a 2-0 defeat to Masiphathisane High School. Mfesane High School defeated Motherwell High School 5-1 and Cingani High School edged out James Jolobe High School 1-0 in their enterprising game. Masiphathisane, Cingani, Ncedo and Soqhayisa High Schools played the netball semi-finals.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Hamilton wins intense Belgian GP IN terms of the spectacle of wheel-to-wheel racing, the 2017 Belgian Grand Prix wasn’t the most electrifying race of the season. However, what it may have lacked as far as a pure racing show, it certainly made up with the intensity of the battle between the two championship protagonists Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. While Hamilton maintained track position throughout the race, the Mercedes driver was never more than two seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Vettel. In his 200th Grand Prix, Hamilton managed to keep Vettel at bay, but it was far from a stroll for Mercedes who admitted post-race that they were pushing flat out from light out to chequered flag. Vettel’s inability to overtake Hamilton proved that track position remains all-important. It’s once again abundantly clear that despite the fact that the 2017 cars are far quicker and more visually exciting, it hasn’t improved the ability to overtake. A late safety car was deployed for debris on the track for an indefensible crash between Force India teammates Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon. The testy relationship between Force India’s drivers came to blows as Perez dangerously squeezed teammate Ocon into the old pitwall, making contact. The race stewards are likely to impose a hefty penalty for Perez’s inexcusably dangerous driving. Despite Vettel getting to within half a tenth of taking the lead, Hamilton maintained control. It wasn’t the case for his Merc teammate, Valtteri Bottas, who was swamped on either side into turn four by Daniel Ricciardo on the left and Kimi Raikkonen on the right. It left Ricciardo in third and Raikkonen recovering from a ten second stop/go penalty for not slowing under yellow flags, in fourth and a well-spanked Bottas in fifth. For Max Verstappen his woeful run in 2017 continued with yet another reliability issue.

This time a cylinder failure in the engine put an end to his afternoon at his de facto home race. While Verstappen’s frustrations were amplified, Nico Hulkenberg took sixth place for Renault ahead of Romain Grosjean in seventh, Massa in eighth, Ocon in ninth and Carlos Sainz in 10th for Toro Rosso. Fully aware that radio communications are often broadcast to the world McLaren’s Fernando Alonso didn’t hold back his contempt during the race. His comments ranged from “embarrassing, really embarrassing” to “I really don’t care too much about the gaps. This is just a test” when told about the gap to other drivers in his vicinity. Later on he summarily told

the team that he wanted no more radio communication. While his frustration is certainly warranted, it was perhaps not the classiest way to go about voicing it. There are more than 600 McLaren employees working flat out to get these two cars onto the track in the best condition possible and it would likely have been terribly demoralising for them to hear Alonso’s comments. The simple truth is that there is no doubt whatsoever that Fernando Alonso is supremely talented and still well capable of winning world titles. But ponder this: Ferrari could have easily re-signed him for 2018, but chose instead to stick with their current lineup. There is a reason for this and the temperament he displayed in the Belgian GP has everything to do with it. Hamilton’s intensely fought win has seen him halve Vettel’s gap to seven points ahead of Ferrari’s home race this weekend at Monza.
