FURTHER RESTRICTIONS LOOM: CALL FOR RENEWED CONSERVATION EFFORTS

Bay dams reach new lows REPORTER

T

HE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s dam levels are fast approaching the 20% mark as their combined levels reached 24% last week. In a statement, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said, although the Nooitgedacht Low Level Water Scheme will provide additional water security to Nelson Mandela Bay, not all supply sources

can be supplemented from the same water system. “As a result, further water restrictions will inevitably follow if the situation deteriorates even further. “With only 10.29% of recorded water supply, Kouga Dam is the most affected, while Churchill Dam languishes at 18.08%. On Monday, the other dams, namely Groendal and Impofu, had a recorded supply of 48.11% and 36.55%, which Trollip called “a clear sign of hard times ahead”. He said the city would need to strengthen its

water conservation efforts to avert a looming disaster. “With no prediction of meaningful rains soon, the new water levels call for a renewed sense of commitment from all metro residents, businesses and other relevant stakeholders. While we acknowledge the impact the municipality’s watersaving awareness campaigns have had since their initial roll-out, the metro continues to experience high water consumption from both domestic users and businesses,” he said. Trollip said, as the administration, they

wished to make a clarion call on residents to assist in preventing a drought disaster by monitoring their household consumption and further tightening water conservation efforts. “We also appreciate the continued vigilance from residents who are consistently reporting water leaks. Through their efforts, we have been able to repair 5 938 water leaks during the first three months of 2018. “Our efforts to save water have been supported by both internal plumbing teams and appointed contractors,” Trollip said.

Bikers rev up for Blikkies Run

With winter creeping closer once again, the Wings Motorcycle Club (MCC) is preparing to host their non-perishable food collection drive for charity, better known as the Blikkies Run, at the Zwartkops Rowing Club on Saturday from 10:00. The initiative is held in support of the People Opposing Poverty in Society (POPS) Foundation’s winter feeding programme. According to Ebrahim Abrahams, Wings MCC chairman, they are aiming to collect more than a thousand items of canned and other non-perishable foods. Children from children’s homes will be entertained and there will be activities to keep families hopping throughout the day. A donation of non-perishable food will grant access to the event. For more info, contact Ebrahim Abrahams on 083 292 3991. SAPS to establish Beachfront SAPS sector REPORTER

THE South African Police Service (SAPS) has committed to establish a beachfront SAPS sector in the Humewood policing area of Port Elizabeth. According to the DA’s Eastern Cape shadow MEC for Safety and Security, Bobby

Stevenson, this emerged in an answer to a written question to the Eastern Cape MEC for Safety and Liaison, Weziwe Tikana. “A dedicated beachfront sector in the Humewood policing area will go a long way to improve the safety and security on the Port Elizabeth beachfront,” Stevenson said. He said this was of particular importance

for tourism and job creation. “The Ward 2 Councillor, Dean Biddulph, will pursue this matter at station level to ensure its implementation. It was at his request that I took this matter up. “We will also continue to push for improved resources for the Humewood Police Station. It currently has a shortage of 23 members as well as a shortage of 16 detect-

Ocean safaris unlock coastal and marine tourism REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay (NMB) which is the only destination that is home to the Big 7 (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino, the southern right whale and the great white shark) is growing in popularity for its coastal and marine tourism offerings, such as ocean safaris and boat-based whale-watching excursions. The Department of Environmental Affairs recently increased the permit allocation from one to two when they awarded boat-based whale-watching business permits to NMB operators, AB Marine Charters and Raggy Charters. Ocean safaris provide an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the marine diversity of Algoa Bay and a chance to observe the ocean’s majestic giants in their natural environment by opting for a boat-based whalewatching tour. There are a wide range of ocean cruises to choose from which include the island cruise, sardine run cruise, penguin island cruise or a dolphin-watching cruise, to name a few. Bird Island and St Croix Island in Algoa Bay were proclaimed part of Addo Elephant National Park in 2005 leading to the unique disposition of NMB being home to the Big 7. This also enables rangers to patrol the islands in an effort to conserve and protect the endangered African penguin whilst allowing visitors to experience a land safari alongside an ocean safari.

St Croix Island is home to 22 000 breeding pairs of the endangered African penguins, the largest breeding colony found in Africa. Bird Island supports the largest breeding colony of Cape gannets in the world (over 160 000 birds), as well as other birds, such as African penguins and rare roseate terns. Seal Island (near Bird Island) supports a breeding colony of Cape fur seals. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism’s chief executive officer Mandlakazi Skefile said, “This is an exciting time for Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism who remains on the forefront of an ever-expanding marine tourism economy that is also included in the National Coastal and Marine Tourism plan as one of the six clusters to be developed over the next five years.” NMB has great potential as a coastal and marine tourism destination because of the natural resources and prolific environmental heritage. Owing to the incredible marine biodiversity, Algoa Bay is also an internationally acclaimed hope spot. Mission Blue defines hope spots as special conservation areas that are critical to the health of the ocean. The southern right whale visits the Bay in the winter months between July and November. Between July and December, the humpback whale can be spotted and wondered at in our Bay and the Bryde’s whale can be seen year-round. Indo-Pacific bottlenose are the most sighted dolphins in the Bay throughout the year in groups ranging between 10 to 400. Common

dolphins are seen in groups of 1 000 to 2 000 from January to June as they follow large shoals of baitfish which move past the Bay. Smaller groups of up to 20 humpback dolphins are spotted in the summer months. Humpback whales can be seen in Algoa Bay between June and early January, reaching peaks in July/August and again in November/December. Southern right whales can be seen from July to October as they enter the safety of the Bay to give birth. The renowned sardine run happens over roughly four weeks between mid-April and mid-May. The sardine run is a phenomenon to witness and as bait fish simultaneously attracts predators, such as dolphins, penguins, seals and sharks, creating all-round viewing and exceptional ocean safari conditions. Skefile said Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism strongly advocates sustainable and responsible tourism to protect and conserve the natural resources. This includes viewing species in their natural environment in a respectful manner rather than keeping them in captive spaces. “Marine ecotourism offerings in Algoa Bay are abundant from scuba diving, snorkelling, beachfront catamaran cruises and ocean safaris, to name a few. “We encourage all visitors and citizens to experience the ecotourism offerings and keep in mind to use accredited and sustainable service providers while creating memories,” Skefile said.

Residents called to submit ideas for city landmark REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) invited all South African citizens to submit innovative ideas for the development of an iconic, world-class precinct to celebrate and honour Nelson Mandela’s contribution to South Africa. The landmark precinct is to be the identity of Nelson Mandela Bay, showcasing and celebrating all the different cultures and heritages represented in the city, including a statue of Madiba.

Announcing the initiative, executive director of economic development, tourism and agriculture, Anele Qaba said, “The city has a unique opportunity being the only one to borrow the name of the great icon in the late Nelson Mandela. The iconic landmark precinct, when open, will be the centrepiece and hub of tourism, creative economy and a meeting place for all the people of the world, adding much-needed unique tourism offerings to grow the tourism economy of our region.” The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), which has been charged with imple-

menting the programme, has designed a process that is accessible by everyone regardless of locality, affluence and social standing. Manager for planning and development Dorelle Sapere said, “We have created multiple platforms for citizens to engage and participate. Not only will the big creative agencies or architect firms enter, but every other citizen has an equal opportunity to design the future iconic landmark. Various online and offline platforms are now available closer to communities.” #DesignYourPrecinct entry forms are available at The Athenaeum, the Tramways Building,

Helenvale Resource Centre, Motherwell Business Support Centre and the Nelson Mandela Bay Art Museum. Artists can then follow the instruction on the form and let their creativity flow into a sheet of paper. Entries can be submitted through special submission boxes at the Helenvale Resource Centre or the Motherwell Business Support Centre by May 4 or at the Tramways Building by May 5. Spotlight on need to keep waste out of SA waters REPORTER

THE national industry body for PET plastic recycling, PETCO and the African Marine Waste Network recently highlighted solutions to the issues of marine and land-based pollution in South Africa. Extrupet, Africa’s leading PET and HDPE bottle recycling company, joined forces with PETCO, the industry body responsible for PET recycling in South Africa, and the Kenton-based African Marine Waste Network, to donate nine desks and 36 chairs to Lake Farm Centre. The furniture was manufactured by Extruwood, using the caps and labels of plastic bottles recycled at Extrupet. Janine Basson, stakeholder relations manager for PETCO, highlighted the important role that partnership initiatives like this play in sustainable waste management. “At PETCO, we believe that plastic bottles are not trash. When they are recycled, they are made into new bottles for water or beverages or recycled into new and useful products, such as polyester fibre for duvets and pillows, or jeans and T-shirts, Basson said. “Similarly, the manufacture of these desks from recycled bottle tops and labels demonstrates that, when there is an end use for recycled plastic, we can ensure it is kept out of our environment and within the circular economy, Basson added. African Marine Waste Network director, Dr Tony Ribbink, said that he was heartened by the proactive approach being taken by key players in the plastics industry. “PETCO and Extrupet are taking a

According to volunteer Marjorie Moore, the donation to Lake Farm went a long way to benefit the centre’s literacy programme. “The literacy classes instil a sense of pride and self-worth and promote independence and life skills while developing healthy attitudes. Having proper desks and chairs creates more of a classroom environment and enables more people with disabilities to join our classes, Moore said. She added that a further benefit was that the donated furniture was

comfortable, yet also virtually indestructible, meaning it typically would not need to be replaced. Joint managing director of Extrupet, Chandru Wadhwani, said the company is thrilled to be able to support the initiative. “Given the severe shortage of desks in South Africa and many other parts of the world, and with prevailing issues of deforestation, there was a pressing need for alternative resources to be tapped. “These desks and chairs provide a real win-win solution, as they benefit both people and the environment. They divert waste that would otherwise have ended up in our landfills or oceans, Wadhwani said.

Green energy project paves the way for more REPORTER A FIRST of its kind green energy initiative in the Port of PE has proven successful. The pilot project has opened the door for larger projects in the future, which is in line with the technological advancement of the Transnet Strategy 4.0 and the Smart People’s Port concept.

“This sustainable and environmentally friendly project will also save costs significantly. The return on investment is an absolute bonus,” said Rajesh Dana, port manager. “It is introducing sustainable means of operations into the folds of the port. Capable of generating

1 800kWh per month, it is the equivalent of the amount of energy consumed by six small households. “Based at the Civil Engineering Depot and connected to its distribution board, it is supplying the depot with energy primarily consumed by light equipment, appliances and lighting.” According to Dana, there will be definite financial returns. Although the energy generated is consumed internally, it will reduce external electricity cost to the municipality. The return on investment period is about seven years – it will thus take seven years for the savings to cover the initial infrastructure investment of R240 000. After this, they will gen-

erate pure savings. The project entailed the installation of a 13.5kWp grid tied static solar photovoltaic system. It comprises 42 280W PV panels and a 20kWp three-phase inverter. The project was completed within four months at the end of last year. After three months of operation, the installation has exceeded the benchmarks set and paved the way for larger installations. “We’ll soon be going out to market for a much larger installation, exceeding 500kWp of renewable energy generation,” Dana concluded. The port engineers department and renewable energy service provider, Out the Green Box, were responsible for the implementation.

Youth centre hosts environmental awareness march The youth of the Maranatha Child and Youth Care Centre have been very busy with their Earth Day activities. One of the new projects that they have been busy with is their ‘eco bricks’ initiative where they have been filling bottles with plastic in order to be able to make ‘green’ bricks for building projects at the centre. They also planted a special tree for the occasion and designed their own posters and collages. Pictured here are some of the youth who recently took to the streets and staged a special march along Kings Beach, through to the popular Sunday market to raise awareness of environmental issues. This year’s winner was Heine Deysel, who was entered into the competition by his wife, after she wrote a letter explaining a little bit about her husband and why he deserved to win an entry into the IRONMAN. This was after he found out no entries were left, after months of training he thought he would just be a spectator, but his luck was about to strike. He has competed in a full IRONMAN before in 2012 as well as a half IRONMAN, and was looking to improve his previous performance. “My finish time was 13h05 and almost an hour faster than my first IRONMAN in 2012,” he said after crossing the finish line at this year’s event. When asked about how his race went, Deysel seemed to have a smooth day without too many troubles.

PE Express entry winner, Heine Deysel, (right) with Niel Louw after crossing the IRONMAN African Championship 2018 finish line. PHOTO:SUPPLIED “It went really well and dare I say according to plan. I had an above average swim with a good bike leg, but unfortunately started to cramp on the run. It was still an amazing journey and experience to take part in the IRONMAN African Championship 2018.”

Deysel’s achievement made the past seven months of training more than worth the effort. He took part in this year’s event with his long-time close friend and neighbour, Niel Louw. Deysel describes the highlight of this year’s event as “Most definitely running down the red carpet with the Red Cross on my chest and hearing the words ‘You are an IRONMAN’.” Deysel said he became quite emotional when he heard that he had won the competition after thinking that he would be just a spectator on the sidelines. “I firstly decided to do it with one of my best friends and neighbour, Niel Louw, which did it for the first time ever. Another reason that motivated him was to compete for the Race of Faith team, which is led by Brink Eksteen. “He (Eksteen) started this ministry in 2009 with seven ordinary people to get the cross of Jesus out there and to be ‘witnesses through fitness’.” Deysel describes the team as a family who are learning and growing “through each other’s stories and testimonies”.

WIN! WIN! WIN!: OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS

The science of dictionary-making DICTIONARY users want to be able to find the words they search for and get enough information about those words to make their search worthwhile. But how do dictionary-makers select words and decide how much information to include in each dictionary? Space has always been a dictionary-maker’s biggest enemy. Invariably, dictionaries either have too many words, with too little information to be helpful or they’d have too few words and run the risk of a user not finding what they’re looking for. While digital dictionaries have overcome this problem, South Africa’s education system still largely relies on printed resources. Oxford University Press South Africa, which publishes some of the most widely used dictionaries in SA schools, has an innovative and scientific way of identifying the words that learners need to look up. They analyse large electronic collections of texts – called corpora – and extract the key words that learners need to understand their school textbooks and literature. In making the new Oxford Afrikaans-Engels English-Afrikaans Skoolwoordeboek School Dictionary, Oxford also built smaller corpora, which contained its own textbooks for subjects in English and Afrikaans. A comparison of textbooks and texts from general language revealed exactly which words or terms are used in the school curriculum. These were then included in the dictionary in addition to the most frequently used general English and Afrikaans words. This has never been done before in a bilingual school dictionary for Afrikaans and English. But corpora do more than simply provide the list of headwords to include in a dictionary. “We also look at how each word is used in the different collections of texts, and the sen-

tences from those texts then provide the basis for the example sentences we include in our dictionary,” explained Dr Phillip Louw, dictionary content development manager at Oxford University Press South Africa. “And those natural, relevant example sentences really are the holy grail of a multifunctional dictionary, such as the Oxford Afrikaans-Engels English-Afrikaans Skoolwoordeboek School Dictionary. “They not only help learners to find and understand the correct translation but also show them how to use the translation in their own speaking and writing.” For Oxford, diversity and relevance were front of mind when choosing example sentences for this dictionary. “We were very mindful of the fact that we need to deal with issues of gender, race and disability in a sensitive way, while staying relevant to the current realities of South African learners,” continued Louw. The second, extended edition of the Oxford Afrikaans-Engels English-Afrikaans Skoolwoordeboek School Dictionary is available at all good bookstores at a recommended retail price of R139.95. The dictionary includes 3 000 more words than the first edition, pronunciation guidance throughout, illustrations for difficult concepts or words and 48 pages of useful extras, including dictionary activities, writing exemplars and a brand-new mini grammar to support reading, writing and speaking. To stand a chance of winning a copy, go to our Facebook page (PE Express), find a photo of the dictionary and comment with your favourite word. Winners will be contacted on Facebook.

I saw this powerful Shamsi on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for years and I tried many people for help but all failed. I could not believe it when he showed me my enemies in form of a dream and whatever they were doing to me. Every single detail he showed me about my enemies was so true. Shamsi accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems without me speaking a single word to him. Within 6 days after his prayers, my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me plus my enemies approached me and confessed the bad things they had done to me. Shamsi also gave me a special ring to fix my financial problems, and a love crystal that made people at home and at work to like me, listen to me and do whatever I want, without me even having to ask.

She also helps people with: • Financial Problems • Love Relationship • Work Crises • Family Problems • Bad Luck Health Problems • and many more...

PELFA REPORT:

FRANCOIS ROTHNER

Legends League matches heat up PELFA Old Buck Gin League fans saw two very high-scoring games take place last week. Callies kept their unbeaten record intact when they thrashed St Albans 8-0 at Londt Park. Carl Pereira had helped himself to a hat-trick by the time the half-time whistle blew. However, after half-time, the floodgates opened. David Brooks and Nigel Bailey each helped themselves to a brace and a minute from time, Grant Rossouw found the back of the net from a neat flick by Ryan Harris. At Victoria Park Sports Club, Mahle Old Grey overwhelmed PE City 5-1. Jason Aitken opened the scoring for Old Grey 10 minutes into the game. City equalised in the 19th minute. Richard Clarke scored straight after City’s goal to put Old Grey ahead. Aitken got his hat-trick with goals two minutes after half-time and again in the second half. Julius Jogoo converted a peanut with a few minutes remaining on the clock. A seven-goal game at the Oval saw NMBM come out the winners 4-3 over Westpark. Bulelani Siwela and Lindiso Mpabanga scored for NMBM in the first half. Stevie Pugh curled a corner to put Westpark on the score sheet. By half-time, NMBM led the match 2-1. NMBM’s Shawn Sokiya helped himself to a brace in the second half, while Lionel Terblanche and Warren Brown each got a goal for Westpark. Kuyga Masters edged Central Acemates out 1-0. Mzikayise Jacob saved the day for Kuyga with a volley ten metres off the centre circle three minutes before the final whistle. Fairview Rovers and African Leopards played out a 1-1 draw. Leopards went one goal down from an own goal. Tabo Simane earned them a point with a goal midway through the second half. Priory got the better of Shamrocks on their home turf. Brent Kopps and Dustin Stokes had Priory 2-0 up at half-time. Siven Naidoo and Naj Padachie brought the game to two all. The fixtures for the fourth round of the PELFA Old Buck Legends League are as follows: Mahle Old Grey vs NMBM at Old Grey Sports Club at 19:00 African Leopards vs Shamrocks at The Oval at 19:00 Central Acemates vs Fairview Rovers, venue TBA at 19:00 Westpark vs Kuyga Masters at Londt Park Sports Club at 19:30 Priory vs Callies at NMU South at 19:30 St Albans vs PE City at St Albans at 19:30

The regional league champions took FC Winners to the cleaners in their first game when they thrashed them 3-1 in their game at South Campus Field. Madibaz whacked the embattled Amarhamba United 3-1 as well in their South Campus game on Friday and snatched a hard-fought away 3-2 triumph from Mabayibone Strikers in their third game at Walmer Fields on Saturday. As things stand, Madibaz are unstoppable and they have the potential to defend their league title. In another game, Camper United collected the six maximum league points in their bid to finish in the top eight. United defeated PE Sundowns 4-2

and demolished Hearts 6-3 at the weekend. Following their bright start to the season, Morning Stars

lost their winning momentum. Stars were dimmed by Young Ideas in their 1-0 loss at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Fairview Rovers also rubbed salt into the wounds of Stars after they defeated them 3-2 at Marock Round Field on Saturday. Young Killers went down 3-1 to Despatch Pioneers at Khayamnandi Community Fields on Saturday and again 2-1 to Highland Spurs in their Uitenhage derby at Jabavu

Stadium on Sunday. Match commissioner Jacob Frolick said the game between Roaring Tigers and Golden Aces was abandoned after 45 minutes with Golden Aces leading 3-1. He is awaiting the referee’s written report. According to Frolick, in another incident, match officials did not turn up for the game between Motherwell Academy and Ikamva Movers at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Sunday.

Hearts’ Errol Jordaan is chased by Camper United defender Siyamkela Tshepo Khanyele.

Showvillage take the lead in MOFA Premier League SHOWVILLAGE United Brothers are in high spirits after taking the lead in the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League log table. Showvillage collected four league points after they played two games recently. They drew 1-1 with Highland Spurs in their first game and defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 in the second. Royal Bucks, however, are hot on Showvillage’s heels. Bucks supporters saw their side hammer Happy Stars 3-0 in a one-sided game that was played at the Motherwell NU 11 Grounds. The rejuvenated Shining Stars collected six maximum league points in their two

games. In their first game, Stars drubbed FC Angels 3-1 and in their second, Stars had to dig deep to accumulate a 1-0 win from Manchester FC. Young Madrid also won their games and defeated Amathole FC 4-2 before they managed to beat Valencia FC 2-0. The struggling Tomorrow Stars salvaged a 2-2 draw when they took on FC Angels in their first game, but lost 1-0 in their second game against Young Tigers. Other MOFA Premier League results:
