IPTS wheels finally rolling THANDI SETOKOE

HE long-awaited Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) buses finally started operating on Monday.

This follows after complimentary bus tickets were distributed to the public by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip and MMC for Roads and Transport Rano Kayser at Cleary Park last week Friday. Commuters can obtain complimentary tickets at the Cleary Park customer care centre and the Mfanasekhaya Gqobose Building (formerly Eric Tindale Building) in Govan

Mbeki Avenue, which can be used until April 9. The complimentary ticket will allow commuters to have access to 12 free trips. From April 10, standard fare bus tickets will be available at R10 each. “This is our way of getting the public to experience this transportation system, so, we can receive valuable feedback from them,” Kayser said. Last week Monday, the MMC officially handed over 25 IPTS buses to a local operator, Spectrum Alert, at the Cleary Park bus depot. Commenting on the postponement of the roll-out date for the bus system following several years of delays in getting the project off

the ground, Kayser said the moment for the IPTS buses had finally arrived with the last piece of the puzzle now in place. “It was a really hard and bumpy road but we managed to stay on course. “I have made a commitment that we will not deviate from legislative requirements and accordingly the city now mandates the industry to run the IPTS on its behalf,” Kayser said. He said taxi drivers and guardjies (previously responsible for collecting money and operating taxi doors) had been trained and were now qualified Code 14 drivers and many more job opportunities would follow, including security services, maintenance and me-

chanical jobs among others. “We would, however, like the beneficiaries of these jobs to come primarily from the taxi industry,” Kayser said. Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron said that the buses would service four main routes which included Cleary Park to the CBD terminal. “The other three routes will include suburbs within the northern areas,” he said. Police officers and armed forces, who can present their appointment certificates as proof, will be able to commute for free, while pensioners and students with valid pension or student cards will also get a 20% discount on the normal fare, Kayser added.

R53m makeover for Bethelsdorp’s police station REPORTER AFTER three years of hard work, the R53 million revamp of Port Elizabeth’s Bethelsdorp Police Station has been completed, heralding a new era in user-friendly, community-oriented crime control for residents. In a bid to provide a more compassionate, public-oriented service, the new facility now not only features a mandatory charge office and holding cells but also offers a far greater element of privacy to victims of crime. Bethelsdorp station commander Brigadier Zolani Xawuka said the revamp allowed the police station to operate far more effectively and efficiently. The revamped police station is inclusive of a more user-friendly charge office with a dedicated area for the public to make statements, get documents certified and make general enquiries. The new cells will also enable the station to reduce overcrowding.

“We feel the SAPS deserves credit for their visionary role in this project,” said Greta Teltschik, an architect with SVA International, the firm tasked with making the vision a reality. The firm officially handed over the station earlier this month. “For me, the biggest achievement was the establishment of an autonomous centre which serves the sole purpose of helping victims of crime,” she said. “Victims were (previously) forced to wait in a single room, regardless of the crime committed against them – or their age.” Part of this new wing is dedicated to children, who now have a colourful waiting room to play in while waiting for assistance. Colonel Dawie Scholtz, who has been stationed in Bethelsdorp for 15 years, commended SVA International for their role in converting the police’s vision into reality. “The desperately needed revamp has seen a complete turnaround for everyone involved,” said Scholtz.

IRONMAN now offering 50 additional slots for women REPORTER IRONMAN recently announced that 50 additional female slots for the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay, have been added to the 2018 Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban race as part of the Women For Tri initiative. Women For Tri, an IRONMAN Foundation programme, launched by IRONMAN in 2015, welcomes and empowers new female triathletes to be part of the sport’s continued exponential growth. According to the statement, the 50 slots come as an addition to the 100 slots already available at this year’s Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban race. IRONMAN South Africa’s managing director, Keith Bowler, said the initiative was a great way to acknowledge the growing presence of women in sport. “We will also be supporting Women For Tri activities over the race weekend of the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban event. Local company helps preserve open green space NWABISA FUNDE ONE of the few open green spaces still left in the city will now be able to stay intact, owing to a generous contribution by a local construction company. Kayalihle Trading and Construction, which specialises in road and civil works, recently completed a project on Verdun Road in Lorraine.

“After the completion of the project, I wanted to give back to the community,” said Kayalihle Trading and Construction owner Terrence Nyathi. “I liaised with the ward councillor of this area to identify an area in which the company could assist the community.” Ward 8 Councillor Gustav Rautenbach feels very strongly about preserving open spaces and parks, which is why he suggested the open space opposite the Kamma Cross-

ing Shopping Centre in Lorraine, where delivery trucks often park. The new fence will now assist with keeping the delivery trucks and other vehicles off the open space. According to Rautenbach, the municipality will add a boom gate to the fence. Nyathi donated the fencing inclusive of the labour, all amounting to a total of R30 000. “The community and I are very grateful towards Kayalihle Trad-

Fond memories of loving wife, mother THANDI SETOKOE “THERE is truly none like her. She was specially made by God just for me. A very sweet someone, honest and loving and a caring mother to our children.” These are the words of Nceba Dladla, former PE Express reporter, sharing his fond memories of his late wife, Kennethia Dladla, who passed away on Friday evening following a long battle with cancer. He described how the family had to pull together and adjust as certain things in the household had to change after she was diagnosed with cancer. “Fortunately, we are a tight-knit family and our children have been brought up well, so, the transition where they had to do things their mother used to do, was not hard. “They all helped to ensure that their mother was well taken care of and I

POPS winter drive in full swing REPORTER IT’S that time of the year to clear wardrobes and donate towards the POPS Foundation’s annual winter drive. This is the seventh annual drive by POPS (People Opposing Poverty in Society) and it launches on April 1 and runs until May 31. As in previous years, the recipients of this project will be the most impoverished citizens of the metro. POPS will once again aim to distribute food, blankets and warm clothing among the neediest citizens residing in informal settlements during June. The foundation provides more than 60 000 meals every month via soup kitchens, day care centres, children’s homes, shelter for homeless, old age homes, families in need and other institutions. “We are again appealing to the community for

their kind assistance in the collection of preloved warm winter clothing for adults and children and non-perishable foods, such as tinned foods, rice, samp, maize meal, pasta, sugar and soya mince,” said Mureedah Botha of POPS. “These items are used to make up generous food parcels to assist these families. Even the smallest contribution makes a tangible difference in the lives of the less fortunate. “Your contribution, however small, can make a huge difference this winter, open your hearts and your cupboards and help us to help them,” said Botha. These items can be dropped at collection points or by contacting Mureedah Botha on 083 738 8436. Dave’s Gym: a little rough diamond in community ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL SASSA had leased his building for 10 years and after they had cancelled the lease a year ago, the only potential buyers were going to turn the building into a liquor store. However, businessman Dave Coleman knew that he had to use the premises for something positive for the community, instead, and created Dave’s Gym. Coleman’s first gymnasium is situated in West End and he has already seen what a positive contribution a gym can make to a community. Dave’s Gym, situated on the corner of Bell Road and Springbok Street in Gelvandale, opened late last year.

“When SASSA moved out, I was very depressed because the rent of that building was a huge chunk of my income. But now that it has turned into a gym I can see how much it changes people’s lives. “The gym does not generate much financially as we charge very nominal fees, but the impact that it has on the community is enormous. “Gelvandale did not need another liquor store. I knew that this building had to be used for something that would uplift the community. I see this gym a rough diamond in our area. “The atmosphere in here is electrifying.” The gym is used by young and old, but the youth especially find it to be a haven where they can exercise in a safe environment and enjoy the perks of free wi-fi and state-of-the-art equipment.

On Wednesdays a section of the gym is used free of charge by the Xiao-Long Kickboxing Club, led by Sensei Mervyn January, for training. The Pro Skills Soccer Academy also uses the gym on Fridays, for free, for its 60 young members. “The feedback that I am getting from coaches and teachers in the community is great. “There is a shift in the mindset of the children

who come to train here. I believe in the saying that a child in sport is a child out of court.” Besides the youth, the gym also caters for the older generation. The oldest member at Dave’s gym is 83 years old and the second oldest is a healthy 77 years old. The gym will host a holiday programme for learners at R15 per learner per day and also offers free trial sessions for adults. For more info contact Dave on 079 878 6018.

REPORTER A TOTAL of 105 Grey High School learners participated in the biannual Laps for Hope 24-hour charity relay marathon to raise funds for two selected charities, Isithembiso Babies Home and Love Story.

The boys ran in relay shifts of 30 minutes each, with a five-hour break between shifts. A total distance of over 1 000km was covered and two boys each completed a full marathon distance. Representatives from Isithembiso (Teranique Watts) and Love Story (Sarah Smuts) were present at the end of the event. The handover of the collected funds will be done as soon as all the monies have been collected.

Scholarship prize wins add up for maths whizz REPORTER CHADLEIGH Ownhouse, a Grade 12 learner from Alexander Road High School, has been placed in the top three of his age group for the second year in a row at the annual Rhodes University Mathematics Experience (RUME).

Chadleigh, who lives in Extension 22 in Bethelsdorp, is a participant in United Through Sport’s Senior School of Excellence Programme and has been a beneficiary of United Through Sport’s programmes for the past five years. The RUME was hosted earlier this year in Grahamstown where Chadleigh competed against representatives from 30 other schools in the Eastern Cape. He scored second overall in the Grade 11 to 12 category in the mini-Olympiad. “Maths is very easy to me. It involves a lot of problem solving and creative thinking. “You have to be innovative in the way you solve the problems,” said Chadleigh. He is no stranger to performing well at the RUME competition, as he last year came first in his age group during the mini-Olympiad. Combining two years worth of scholarship prizes, he has accumulated approximately R100 000 worth of tertiary tuition scholarships for studying at Rhodes University in 2018. His parents, Andrea and Neil, motivate him to always do his best and are very proud of his most recent achievements.

Lifesaving nationals taking place in Bay REPORTER PORT Elizabeth, the home of action and adventure sports, will play host to the biggest lifesaving competition in South African history with the General Tire Lifesaving South African National Masters, Senior, Juniors and Nipper Championships exclusive to the city for the first time from Saturday, March 31 to Saturday, April 7. More than 2 000 competitors will compete to be called the best in the country and only the best of the best will be picked to represent South Africa at the Lifesaving World Championships in Australia later in the year. “This is a result of huge efforts by lifesaving clubs in attracting more people, especially the youth to this growing sport and the vision of our sponsor, General Tire, to bring the Championships to one central home, Port Elizabeth,” commented Dylan Tommy, president of Lifesaving

South Africa. “More than 5000 people take part in lifesaving events annually, in pools, open water and on the beach. The sport plays a critical role in our national drowning prevention strategy,” he continued. A fun walk and transplant awareness event will take place on Friday July 13 while a 90-day “step challenge” will start on Monday April 9,and run until Saturday July 7. Interested persons can enter teams of four and walk towards winning prizes. The games were officially launched on Saturday March 17 at the Protea Marine Hotel in Port Elizabeth where athletes, family members and games partners showed their support. Highbury celebrate weekend victory over Spears SELBY MADIKANE THE Nelson Mandela Bay semi-professional side, Highbury FC, gave a good account of themselves when they overcame Spears of the Nation 2-0 during their ABC Motsepe League match at the NMU South Campus Fields on Human Rights Day. Highbury FC got into the game slowly, with the visiting side attacking relentlessly. However, Highbury’s defence did their homework as they avoided making unnecessary mistakes. Spears skipper Mncedisi Nala and midfielder Zolani Nobetshi initiated good

moves in the midfield, but Highbury skipper Bright Ndlovu kept on stopping the duo. Highbury’s long-serving player, Andile Mkhize, was outstanding in the central defence position. Nala sent a perfect pass to his striker, Olwethu Sithole, whose effort was halted by Ndlovu. Spears came up strong with their right wing, Sabelo Xolo, attempting a close-range shot that was saved by Highbury goalkeeper Ntuthuko Mthethwa. Highbury right winger Luyanda Jibiliza, along with Ndlovu and Ntuthuko Goqo, gave Spears’ defence a headache when they attacked. In the last minutes of the first

THEO Bierman will be racing for the Paige Project in the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship 2018. The birth of The Paige Project was inspired by the birth of James Barson’s daughter, Paige Morgan Barson, in 2006. Paige was born with cerebral palsy which left her with moderate to severe brain damage and blindness. In 2007, David Barson (Paige’s uncle) organised an event to raise funds in the hopes of purchasing an orthopedic chair to assist and support Paige’s spinal structure. This led to the creation of The Paige Project. The Paige Project is a charity organisation that raises funds for children with mental and physical disabilities, primarily caused by cerebral palsy. Brothers David and James Barson are two of the members of The Paige Project. Theo Bierman and Grant Nock complete the four-member team. Theo Bierman is new to IRONMAN, having completed his first Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 Durban in 2017 and then moving onto the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa in East London earlier this year. He will be competing in his first full distance IRONMAN this year – the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship 2018 and says, “I plan on finishing this year in Durban again.” Having followed a full training program in preparation for the 2018 Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship, Bierman is feeling very excited and is “diving in head first, literally.” “Both Dave and I plan on concentrating on the full distance IRONMAN only,” said Bierman, adding that “Depending how each year goes, we may add to these.” While he hopes to meet his personal goals in terms of finishing time, Bierman noted, “The Paige Project’s hopes and goals

Ferrari strike opening blow in Australia “I WAS waiting to put a lap in and wipe the smile off your face”. This was the jibe Lewis Hamilton directed at Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel after Saturday’s qualifying session. “What goes around comes around” was Vettel’s retort at the time, but he also responded on Sunday with an opportunistic win in the opening round of the 2018 season. Hamilton withstood a challenge for the lead of the race from Kimi Raikkonen in the opening lap as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen slipped to fifth behind the Haas of Kevin Magnussen. The Dutchman’s race suffered further when he oddly spun in the middle of turn one. Not only did the Mercedes not disappear into the distance, but Raikkonen also kept him within three seconds for all of the first stint. Elsewhere, Valtteri Bottas was making slow progress from 15th on the grid after binning the Merc in qualifying a day earlier. Alex Road crowned PE Central hockey champions REPORTER ALEXANDER Road seized their opportunity midway through the match to be crowned champions in the PE Central edition of the SPAR Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge at Westering in Port Elizabeth yesterday. After defeating last year’s champions, Woodridge, in the semi-finals, Alexander Road came up against 2016 winners, Collegiate, and ended up winning 1-0 in a tense battle. Although the Collegiate girls dominated territorially, they could find no way through the determined Alex defence. The match ended with a final onslaught by Collegiate, with two penalty corners in quick succession, but, as had been the case for the full 20 minutes, the Alexans stood firm. The new champions showed how dangerous they could be in this shortened format by taking their chance in one of their forays into the Collegiate circle, with Alexandra Schenk pouncing to net the winner. In the cross-pool play-offs, Alexander Road shaded Woodridge 1-0 in the eight-second penalty shootout, while Collegiate also went to penalties against Pearson, winning 2-1. After ending third in the inaugural tournament in 2016 and second last year, Alexander Road coach, Kyle Schimper, said they were delighted to finally finish in first place, qualifying

for the provincial finals in August. “After our performances in the last two years, there was the hope that we could go all the way this time,” he said. “But in this sort of format you never know just how it is going to end.” What made their victory even more special, Schimper said, was the announcement by SPAR that Alexander Road would host next year’s PE Central tournament. Schimper said the style of their play was suited to the format. “We definitely try to push the attacking sort of game and the shorter format does perhaps help us a bit. “It was a bit of a fortunate goal, if I can put it that way, but that’s the nature of the game – the team who take their opportunity can win and if you don’t, it can be a difficult way to lose.” He felt the concept was a fantastic initiative for hockey across the country as it gave an opportunity for all schools to compete at another level. “Our girls really enjoy this tournament and today was good for us because we are leaving on Friday for a tour to East London. So, this gametime was invaluable. “Also, the girls appreciate the effort that is put in to give them this opportunity and, without SPAR, this would not be happening.” SPAR EC sponsorship and events manager, Alan Stapleton, paid tribute to the players and supporters, saying their involvement epito-

= The Eastern Cape U/23 EP pool team participated in the U/23 South African Blackball Competition in Carnival City, Johannesburg, earlier this year. Three of the members of the u/23 team were awarded their SA colours when they went to Ireland to represent South Africa in 2016 at the World Championships and they put their skills to good use during the blackball competition.
