LL dogs deserve a loving home, but when these dogs become commodities, and are bred for profit, it doesn’t matter how well meaning or qualified the breeders are. “If we wish to put an end to the gross pet overpopulation problem and provide loving forever homes for dogs in

need of them, there is no real justification for the perpetuation of dog breeding.” These are the words of Beverley Rademeyer from the Animal AntiCruelty League (AACL). Following the plight of the overpopulation of dogs due to illegal breeding throughout the metro, which results in animal cruelty and neglect, the local animal organisations have come together to plea with the Nelson Man-

dela Bay Municipality to help them in their fight against the scourge. According to these organisations, imposing fines on the illegal dog breeders could assist in bringing the transgressors to book. “No matter how you look at the issue, breeding remains problematic and results in overflowing shelters,” Rademeyer said. She added that in most animal shelters every cage was full and dogs kept

coming. “The dogs come in as strays or are abandoned while many others are surrendered. “What really breaks my heart is that in as much as we would love to rescue all the dogs, it’s just not possible.” Rademeyer explained that one of the biggest misconceptions that people had was that domestic animals could be bred for sustainability.

“This cannot be further from the truth. Domestic animals do not serve that purpose. “It is only commercial animals – sheep, cattle, chickens and more – that can be bred by means of ensuring sustainability.” She also emphasised that education is key. “People need to be educated on what the law requires of them and also about the health aspects that are involved.” Continued on page 4

Mayor delivers SOMA highlighting successes REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Executive Mayor Athol Trollip delivered his State of the Metro Address (SOMA) last week, highlighting the progress of his Democratic Alliance-led coalition administration since it has been in power the past year. The SOMA was delivered at the Ernest Swanepoel Hall in Despatch. In his speech, the mayor admitted that the coalition government had not been without challenges. “No one said that it would be easy, and it hasn’t been. “However, we have persevered and our efforts have been seen and felt by many across the city and beyond,” he said. He added that upon his appointment he had promised to do three things – stop corruption, create jobs and deliver better service. “We have adopted a zero tolerance approach

to corruption, fraud and dishonesty.” Trollip said they had initiated an audit of the Housing Revolving Fund, which they believe owes the municipality millions of rands. “We have suspended five senior officials and concluded several disciplinary cases, where officials have been suspended indefinitely, with a 100% success rate to date,” he said. He added that they have opened the mayoral committee meetings to the media, established an anti-corruption hotline which has received hundreds of tip-offs, and banned business class travel and the use of blue lights on municipal vehicles. “We are doing things differently because we promised change.” Trollip said, under the new administration, unemployment had decreased by 2.2% in the last quarter of the last year, adding that more than 2 000 people were afforded work opportunities under the Expanded Works Programme. He said the city, however, needs to attract more investments from local, national, and inter-

THE South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced that the rehabilitation of the R75 between Port Elizabeth and Despatch is set to create significant opportunities for SMMEs in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The procurement process for the SMMEs has already commenced and the two-year project is expected to be completed in May 2019. “The 37 local SMMEs will get the opportunity to participate in a development project that will boost their experience and revenue.” He added that some of the subcontracting opportunities included, but were not limited to, the removal, relocation and/or installation of traffic signals, accommodation of traffic, roadwidening excavation and installation of subsoil drains, drainage systems, concrete linings for open drains, animal fencing, concrete palisade and road markings. “There is also an introduction of a Sanitation and Waste Disposal and Environmental Project which will also allow SMMEs to participate,” Peterson said.

NMB womenowned businesses receive their grades REPORTER NINETEEN women-owned businesses in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro have recently graduated from a R250 000 intensive nine month women enterprise development programme run by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) in partnership with the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI). The graduation ceremony officiated by the MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Sakhumzi Somyo, was held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre in Uitenhage last Thursday. A total of 21 enterprises which met the criteria were admitted to the programme, which provided training, mentorship and coaching covering areas such as strategy development, financial management, marketing management and business legal compliance. Richmond-based Bibstar Trading and Projects, owned by Nozipho Hlalukana, is one of the women-owned enterprises that graduated from the programme on Thursday.

The company employs eight women and two men and offers cleaning, renovations and maintenance services. It has contracts with companies such as the South African Maritime Authority, Coega Development Corporation and the Department of Rural Development. “My business was provided with a mentor, Lulama Jakavula, who is a business trainer and her help was instrumental in ensuring that Bibstar developed proper financial management systems,” Hlalukana said. ECDC business support manager Mpumi Fundam said the programme was aimed at addressing the “entrepreneurial skills bottleneck” by providing coaching, mentorship and training of women-owned emerging enterprises in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area. In addition, all participants had access to the varied support products offered by ECDC to address either access to finance or markets. “The programme is aimed at facilitating growth and sustainability of women-led small businesses, supporting women-owned businesses to operate in a professional manner, while improving their administrative effi-

Animal shelters seek metro’s help Continued from page 1 “THEY have a responsibility to care for their animals.” She said, “All we want is for the municipality to come forward and hear our cry.” Many dogs are euthanised in shelters every year because of a lack of space, resources, and people who are willing to adopt these animals. Replying to the measures that the municipality had put in place to involve more people in the plight, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said they established a dedicated dog control unit which responds to matters related to illegal dog breeding. “Our subdirectorate is aware of the problem of stray animals and the dog control unit is responsible for collecting stray animals which are reported to the municipality,” he said. However, the petition drafted by the local animal organisations states that the dog control unit is only tasked with enforcing the by-laws

and does not deal with cases of cruelty or neglect. Currently fines are not issued in terms of the by-laws. “That is why we are pleading to the municipality to fine illegal dog breeders,” Rademeyer said. “These fines can then be channelled back to fund sterilisations and animal welfare. “Our main focus is sterilisation as we believe this can help in curbing the issue of overbreeding.” Mniki said the municipal subdirectorate is not yet in possession of the petition relating to fining illegal dog breeders, “however, the municipal by-laws are clear on this matter; no one is allowed to breed dogs without municipal consent”. Robotic surgical system launched in the Eastern Cape REPORTER AS a significant medical milestone for the province, the highly sophisticated da Vinci Si robotic surgical system has been introduced in the Eastern Cape at the Netcare Greenacres Hospital in Port Elizabeth. Managing director of Netcare’s hospital division Jacques du Plessis said they had brought the technology and capacity required for robotic-assisted surgical procedures to the Eastern Cape after identifying a need for the intricate and highly complex surgical interventions that the da Vinci Si system enabled trained surgeons to achieve. Netcare launched the system in Johannesburg and Cape Town a few years ago. The general manager of Netcare Greenacres Hospital, André Bothma, hailed the development and the benefits it will bring for patients with localised prostate cancer. The da Vinci Si robotic-assisted technology had already been used successfully in South Africa for surgical procedures to treat kidney and bladder cancer in selected patients.

“The new technology will make it possible for trained specialists to offer our patients prostate cancer treatment that is truly world class, and is associated with enhanced outcomes and fewer complications than more traditional forms of surgery for prostate cancer,” Bothma said. Urologist, robotic surgeon and consultant advisor in robotic surgery to Netcare hospitals, Dr Gregory Boustead, is one of the world’s leading authorities on the use of the technology. He said the technology is recognised as the gold standard for the surgical treatment of localised prostate cancer in Europe and the United States and is rapidly becoming the treatment of choice in South Africa. “This is not surprising, as the technology enables well-trained surgical teams to achieve much greater surgical precision than is possible with open or laparoscopic surgery due to the enhanced and magnified three-dimensional, high-definition view of the area being operated on,” Boustead added. “The robotic arms and wristed instruments, furthermore, allow more freedom of movement than the human hand, which enhances surgical preci-

sion and translates into better cancer clearance rates and improved preservation of the nerves which control urinary continence, as well as erectile function. “The latter is of course important to all men, particularly younger men, who have developed prostate cancer.” He further explained that a study analysing the outcomes of the first 500 robotic-assisted prostatectomies at Netcare facilities has shown excellent results. “Hospital stay was two to three days, with very low complication rates and risks of blood loss requiring blood transfusion.” Urologists Dr Hannes Brummer and Dr Johan Coetzee, who will initially be operating with the da Vinci system at Netcare Greenacres Hospital, have undergone extensive training in South Africa and Europe and will initially perform robotic-assisted surgery under Dr Boustead’s proctorship. Smile Week helps children in need of plastic surgery THANDI SETOKOE THE annual Smile Week, which provides plastic surgeons with dedicated theatre time to assist children in need of facial and other reconstruction, saw 29 children undergo surgery in Port Elizabeth’s Provincial Hospital last week. The Smile Foundation initiative, which is sponsored by Airport Company South Africa (ACSA), is aimed at putting a smile on the faces of the children. “We believe that investing in the well-being of our children is an investment in our future, especially in the Eastern Cape because we are a needy province,” said ACSA manager Greg Small. Smile Foundation is a non-governmental organisation that works with eight academic hospitals around South Africa. “We help children who suffer from treatable facial abnormalities such as cleft lip and palate, all burns, facial paralysis and other conditions,” described operations executive director of Smile Foundation Moira Gerszt. The Smile Weeks give the surgeons involved an opportunity to operate on many more children than on a normal weekly theatre slate, enabling more children to receive timeous surgeries.

Plastic surgeons from other academic hospitals flew to Port Elizabeth to assist with offering two theatres for surgery. “We have a very positive and enthusiastic medical team in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. “The doctors really go above and beyond to ensure that the children receive the best care ever. “We want to applaud Dr Van der Walt and his team of doctors for a job well done,” Gerszt said. Nosiviwo Zokoza, mother to 15month-old Likum, who doctors believe has an extremely rare condition called nasal duplication, said she is relieved that the procedure went well. “To be honest, I’m very happy. That’s why I was crying in theatre. When you’re a mom and your child has a problem it’s really frustrating because you feel helpless.” She said she was told by other doctors that the procedure could only be done when her child was three years old. “That didn’t sit well with me simply because I had feared that he would grow up with low self-esteem issues because of the three nostrils. She added that the fortunate part, however, is that he didn’t suffer any health complications before the nostril duplicate correctional surgery. “He was breathing well and didn’t

have any problems. “When I looked at him after the operation I was like, wow, the doctors have done a great job.” Another mother, Ndileka Mhlontlo, who also saw her two-year-old daughter through surgery, shared the same sentiments. “I was so nervous and scared while waiting in theatre, but after the operation – which lasted for almost three hours, I felt so much better,” she said. Mhlontlo’s daughter, Ithandile was born with syndactyly, an abnormal connection or webbing of two or more fingers. She said her child’s abnormality did not bother her, however, she was worried that when she’s older and starts going to school that other children would make fun of her. When asked which surgeries were most challenging, plastic surgeon Dr Brian Ritchie explained, “We find that every child has a different type of challenge. Sometimes the deformities are a little bit out of the ordinary, so we have to apply a different set of judgments. “Cleft palates are probably the most difficult ones to give the patient what they really need – and that’s speech later on in life,” he said. Gerszt said their aim was to enable children to become positive and confident within the communities.

IT’S almost time for the annual PE Express Christmas Baby Competition for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas. The competition opens on September 29 and will close on November 30. Parents who would like to enter their baby can make use of the option to have his or her photograph taken at the Kids and Baby Expo by Liezel Barrow from Pro Design Photographers. Liezel will be at the expo from 9am to 4pm on Friday, and will be available between 9am and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. The cost is R100 for four images which will be emailed to the parents. Pearson learner wins Design a Kombi competition ANIKA DE BEER

hand-drawn and only the originals were accepted. The overall winner’s artwork was used to brand the Tavcor Volkswagen Kombi Service Shuttle which was unveiled at the awards function. However, the awards ceremony had a surprise in store. Owing to the high standard of the competition and the large number of entries, there was a second Kombi that was wrapped in the second place winner’s artwork as well. “The judges had the tough task of choosing three finalists per category,” said Martin Taverner, general manager of new car sales at Tavcor Volkswagen. They eventually whittled the 448 entries down to nine finalists, of which the winners were then chosen. The open category winner is Ashleigh Darné.

NEARLY four months after the Tavcor Volkswagen Design a Kombi competition kicked off with a bang, the winners were finally announced on Thursday, August 10. The competition was initially set to run from April 19 to June 9, but it garnered far more interest than the organisers ever dared hope for, leading them to extend the deadline to July 28. Tavcor Volkswagen received a total of 448 entries across the primary school, high school and open categories. Entrants were required to design the artwork for their Kombi shuttle using the theme “Design a Coastal Kombi” as Port Elizabeth is situated along the beautiful Nelson Mandela Bay coastline. He said the competition presented a wonderful opportunity for Nelson Mandela Bay residents to showcase their artistic skills. “The reason we chose a Kombi as the vehicle to colour in is because it is reputedly the most widely used vehicle linked to families. Short of the Beetle, it is also the longest-standing vehicle in the Volkswagen range.”

In their annual tradition of launching a children’s production where each and every little individual delivers a line or two, the Rother Swain Studio will be launching their production of The Snow Queen which will be running from September 3 to September 10, at Pemads Little Theatre. The Snow Queen has been adapted from the original story by Hans Christian Andersen. Director of The Snow Queen Linda-Louise Swain said two full casts of learners from the studio will bring the story to life on stage. “Megan Bodley and Jamie Lacey lead the cast as the two Snow Queens, backed by over 100 budding thespians, playing varying roles from ravens to polar bears and from icicles to robbers,” she described. She said the casts have been hard at work since the end of last term and are embracing everything from choral verse to choreography. “One of our goals is to have as many disadvantaged children present at the annual show. To achieve this goal we require financial and other support.” She added that many children benefit annu-

ally from the outreach, “Sharon and myself have been overwhelmed by the looks on the children’s faces prior to each show as well as afterwards when they have had their first theatrical experience and leave the theatre smiling and inspired,” Swain said. Companies and individuals have the opportunity to bring hope and fun into the life of a child by sponsoring a R80 ticket per child. “This will ensure that the cost of transport to the theatre is covered as well as provide sweets and juice for each child. Any donation, whether financial or in the form of sweets and juice is welcomed,” Swain said. She added that the major beneficiaries will be the children of Walmer township, Helenvale and Missionvale, however, said that if they are successful in their sponsorship drive, other disadvantaged areas will also be targeted. All in all, the first-half action was entertaining. In the second half, Lads showed that they were the more seasoned side as they did not give Highbury any chances to breathe.

Lads’ skipper, Andisiwe Ndesi, was very instrumental in the second half. Ndesi made a good move that enabled Nolitha Msila to fire her shot that gave her side a 1-0 lead. Ndesi also provided Nwabisa Kolisi with a perfect pass and the Lads’ goalpoacher squeezed the ball into the far post. It was clear by then that Lads had wrapped the game at 2-0. With fatigue taking its toll, Highbury could not reply. The game ended in 2-0 in City Lads’ favour. Lads received a floating trophy plus 20 gold medals while Highbury settled for 20 silver medals.

Young Neighbours win Build It U/13 cup SELBY MADIKANE YOUNG Neighbours won the Zakhele Football Association (Zafa) Daku Build It U/13 Tournament Cup after they overcame Brazil Brothers 3-0 on penalties following the goalless full-time draw in the finals at Wolfson Stadium on Saturday. In the first semi-final, Brazil Brothers claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory from their neighbours Ghetto Eleven, while Young Neighbours booked themselves a place in the finals following their hardfought 1-0 win in the second semi-final. The tempo was very high in the finals, but neither side could break the ice. Both sides failed to convert their clearcut chances into goals. Neighbours went home with the winners’ trophy, 16 miniature trophies, 16 kitbags, 16 water bottles and a kitbag filled

with new kit. Young Neighbours’ goalkeeper, Awonke Bantom, and Awonke Bosipi received gift vouchers of R300 each for winning the best goalkeeper of the tournament and the top goal scorer of the tournament awards respectively. Urban Run to inspire PE to raise funds for charity THE Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) will host the seventh edition of the Urban Run Charity Festival on September 9 and 10 to once again highlight ongoing inner-city upgrades in what has become the biggest charity obstacle event in South Africa. Festival will take place at the Donkin Reserve, starting at 8am with an openentry public aerobics class instructed by the local Metro Gym. The festival will transform the heart of the city into an 8km obstacle course, attracting hundreds of participates and bringing spectators to the city to witness the urban renewal being undertaken by the MBDA and commercial property owners. The Urban Run was started in 2011 by Michael Zoetmulder, director of Zsports Events NPC, as a means to bring people back to the city for a fun event that provides a massive boost to local charities. The event is fast becoming one of the largest sporting events to be held in the CBD and has raised almost R950 000 to date for local nominated charities. This year’s nominated charities are the Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer initiative, and the Cleary Estate Cheshire Home, a home for chronically disabled adults and children situated in the heart of the crime and drug lands of the Northern Areas. This year’s festival will include drone racing, a dog competition, a 3km kids’ obstacle run, a 15km mountain bike race and the popular Urban Run, which is a fun and social event where competitiveness is centered more on raising charity money than

running in record time. Participants dress up and have fun as they attempt 30 or more urban obstacles on the route through the CBD. Akhiwe Malinga, Zsports marketing manager, stressed that the Urban Run has always been about having fun and less about trying to be the first to cross the finish line. “It’s not often runners can take part in an event where they can run and joke with their friends and colleagues and have a great laugh along the way. Such an environment has enabled the Urban Run to attract a lot of participants and this year hopes to bring the charity fundraising from this MBDA supported event to over R1 million,” Malinga said. Local companies can get involved in supporting the event and charities by branding one of the obstacles or water points along the route or by donating prize hampers for the lucky draws. Online entries are still open. Entry to the Urban MTB race is R180, R100 to the Urban Kids 3km and R150 to the Urban Run. Additional late entry fees will apply closer to race weekend. All participants in the Urban Festival are required to raise R100 or more for the nominated charities. Charity forms are available on the Urban Run website at www.urbanrun.co.za.

SpaFrancorchamps kicks off second half THE 2017 Formula 1 season resumes this weekend at the celebrated Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. As one of the most iconic and beloved circuits in the world the Belgian race weekend is eagerly recommended as one of the great races to attend in your lifetime. The reason isn’t only the grand circuit, which encompasses such memorably brave corners like Eau Rouge, Pouhon or Blanchimont. Instead, it’s the atmosphere created by the fervent supporters, being in the heart of the Ardennes forest, and watching the best drivers in the word’s most elite racing series attempt to conquer the most classic circuit of them all. Often classified as a driver’s track at 7.5km, Spa comprises of everything that makes a circuit great. Several elevation changes, off chamber corners and a slew of overtaking opportunities should make the 44 laps a must watch. The high average speed of the circuit, and its layout, calls for a low downforce setup to be coupled with a good amount of power output. It sounds tailor-made for Mercedes and they will start the race weekend as favourites.

Their most likely challengers are unlikely to be either Daniel Ricciardo or Max Verstappen. One of the most disappointing aspects of the 2017 season is the fact that Red Bull didn’t hit the ground running. With the major regulation change it was expected that the Austrian-based team would be challenging for the titles in 2017 but this aspiration is a bridge too far for them now with only nine races remaining in the season. Nevertheless, team principal Christian Horner believes that his team will “at least” be able to match Ferrari’s pace for the remainder of the season. Their rate of development has been impressive, especially since the Spanish grand prix. But it’s a bold statement given that Ferrari will be throwing everything at the remaining races in order to secure the respective drivers and constructors’ championship titles. The championship battle between Ferrari and Mercedes is likely, and hopefully, one that will go down to the wire at the season-ending Abu Dhabi grand prix. However, a single misstep in any of the next nine races could put serious pains to gaining the coveted trophies. For Mercedes, the gains have to come from

improving the downforce of their 2017 car especially for the races that follow after the Belgian and Italian grand prix. “We definitely do have work to do, they [Ferrari] are quick through the corners and we need to work on that. We need to work on our maximum downforce package, that’s the main thing,” Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas confirmed. It’s not straightforward for Ferrari either. They’ve been lacking a bit of pace at certain races, most recently, Silverstone. However, the last race before the summer break was a momentum-building, and important, one-two victory. It means that Ferrari will arrive in Belgium with confidence and with two drivers who can run right at the sharp end. What’s more, championship leader Sebastian Vettel firmly believes that the team has identified its areas of weakness and is now more able to set about improving the car. Arguably, Spa is one of the circuits where Kimi Raikkonen excels most. As a five-time winner and with impressive performances in the last two Raikkonen isn’t too bad a bet for victory this weekend, if Vettel isn’t in second.

Cape Town athlete beats locals for Diva Run win REPORTER THE NMBM Legacy Project 10km Diva Run which started and ended at Kings Beach on Saturday was won by KPMG athlete Zintle Xiniwe in 35:26 with Liziwe Mabona (AMPA) second in 35.51. Despite improving her time by two minutes, local road-running star Ntombisentu Mfunzi had to be satisfied with a third place finish in 36.18. Xiniwe, who was visiting Port Elizabeth from Cape Town for the weekend, enjoyed the run. “I enjoyed the run, but I had to push myself, as I am usually training with men who keep the pace up,” the KPMG athlete, who picked up the R10 000 first prize, said. Evergreen Margie Saunders won the 60-64

category in 42:08 which would have placed her second in the junior women’s category just over a minute behind the winner Vicky Oelofse. Megan Dempster (Madibaz) won the 5km Diva run in 19:06. No Eastern Province records were broken in any of the age categories.

MAKRO BESTMED FIETSTOER EN PRETTRAPPE

Jaarlikse fietstoer hou baie verrassings in VERSLAGGEWER DIE Makro Bestmed Fietstoer en Prettrappe wat op Saterdag, 9 September plaasvind in samewerking met Die Burger gaan vanjaar ’n baie groot geleentheid wees met reuse gelukkige trekkinge, medaljes en prysgeld op die spel. Makro, Bestmed en Mecer se groot bydrae tot die borgskap van die toer het dit moontlik gemaak om weer vanjaar ’n volledige bergfietswedren van topgehalte op Sondag, 10 September aan te bied. Die Laerskool Lorraine en NMU span vanjaar saam om die fietsryfees ’n spog geleentheid te maak. Totem het ook vanjaar in ’n groot mate tot die toer toegetree deur verskeie pad- en bergfietse

as gelukkige trekkinge te borg. Thule Port Elizabeth skenk ook vanjaar twee Thule-fietsdrarakke as gelukkige trekkinge. Makro skenk ook ’n R75-koopbewys aan elke ryer wat aanlyn inskryf. Die toer vorm vanjaar deel van die Bestmed Nasionale Fietsry-reeks en die wedren is vanjaar ook ’n CANSA-byeenkoms wat beteken dat elke ryer wat aan die wedren deelneem ’n bydra tot die stryd teen kanker gaan lewer. Bestmed/ASG skenk ook R10 aan Cansa vir elke ryer wat aan die toer deelneem. Elke ryer wat die 90km en 30km afstand voltooi sal ’n pragtige medalje ontvang. Die groot verrassing is dat ryers wat vanjaar aan die 1km, 5km en 10km prettrappe deelneem ook medaljes sal ontvang.

Al die deelnemers van die bergfietswedren wat vanjaar by Hopewell in die Groenbossiesomgewing plaasvind, sal ook medaljes ontvang. Daar sal ook vanjaar ouderdomskategoriemedaljes en prysgeld in die bergfietswedren aangebied word. Vanjaar is daar weer prysgeld op die spel in die “Ultimate Quest” vir mans en vroue in die pad- en bergfietswedrenne. Medaljes is op die spel vir alle ryers wat hulle afstande voltooi sowel as goud, silwer en brons vir die wenners van die verskillende ouderdomskategorieë. In die bergfietswedren is daar prysgeld op die spel vir die 55km wedren. Die padwedren oor 90km gaan vanjaar weer oor die pragtige Maitlands klim en langs Seaview plaasvind. Die meer onfikse ryers kan aan die 30km wedren deelneem wat weer absoluut op ’n plat roete gaan plaasvind. Daar sal ook prettrappe vir die familie oor 5km en 10km aangebied word, sowel as die 1km Kiddies-wedren. Die bergfietswedren bied vanjaar meer afstande aan. Daar sal ’n wedren oor 55km plaasvind asook prettrappe oor 30km en 10km. Seaman’s Renault/KIA gaan weer 12 diensvoertuie verskaf wat na die veiligheid van die ryers sal omsien. Die NMBM se verkeerspolisie sal sorg dat alles op die roete ordelik verloop. Die “Tranewa” sal sorg dat geen ryers agter gelaat word nie. Powerade gaan verseker dat niemand op die roete dors sal word met die drie waterpunte wat tot beskikking van die ryers sal wees nie. Klinicare en Nurtitech sal sorg dat die ryers baie oulike geskenkpakkies gaan ontvang. Daar word weer vanjaar ’n groot fees saam met die toer aangebied. Hansworse, voedsel en speelgoedstalletjies, springkastele, trapkarre, “hotrods” en ’n veteraanmotoruitstal-

ling, sowel as die Lorraine-blaasorkes sal sorg vir groot vermaak. Ander items wat vanjaar tydens die fees aangebied word, is verfbalskiet, Bulletjie-rugby, netbal en pa’s wat mekaar op die netbalbaan die stryd gaan aansê. Daar gaan dan ook vanjaar ’n biertent wees met TV-skerms waarop die rugby gekyk kan word. Die groot trekpleister is wel die baie en groot gelukkige trekkinge. Africa Silks gaan vanjaar sorg vir ’n pragtige syduvet ter waarde van duisende rande as ’n gelukkige trekking. Silks Africa Anriette-velsorgprodukte, geskenk deur Silks Africa, sal ook gewen kan word. Continental sal ook weer vanjaar sorg dat gelukkige ryers uitstekende bande as gelukkige prys kan wen. Dan sal daar baie speelgoed-pryse op die spel wees vir die kinders. Die eerste groep ryers sal Saterdag om 7vm vanaf die Laerskool Lorraine wegspring. Die res van die groepe sal daarna met 5-minuutintervalle wegspring.
