POLICE MINISTER PROMISES TO ERADICATE HELENVALE GANGS, CRIME:

‘We are bringing the army’ THANDI SETOKOE

T

HE Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, has assured that no stones will be left unturned in an effort to eradicate crime and ensure that Nelson Mandela Bay’s gang-infested northern areas are made safer for the residents. This was promised during his visit to Helenvale last Friday, which was aimed at mobilising the community to work hand in hand with the police in fighting crime. Engaging with community leaders, Mbalula said it was of great con-

cern to see the gang violence in the area. “We can’t allow people to live in a state where they have given up hope and have let criminals rule,” Mbalula said. He said that the gangsters operated by distributing and selling drugs in the communities in order to survive. “We are going to make the space very narrow for them. We will never co-exist with criminals,” he asserted. Mbalula said the government had to intervene and do practical things that the society and the communities will come to appreciate. “This is not only about the police. We must work with the other depart-

ments as well,” Mbalula said, adding that social workers were needed in the area. He said unemployed people should be put into programmes to keep them from falling prey to social ills. Responding to the issue of illegal firearms, Mbalula said in due time, soldiers were going to be brought in to confiscate illegal firearms. “We are going to bring in the army. The soldiers are going to move street by street, house by house to get them,” Mbalula said. NMB Member of Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security John Best agreed there is a long overdue urgent intervention needed in Helenvale.

“I applaud the fact that the Minister is going to bring in additional resources because we’ve got to get back to the basics – and that’s visible policing. Patrolling and taking back our streets,” Best said. He pointed out that the area has an unbelievable amount of illegal firearms, adding that they have also invested in technology to assist in fighting crime. “The Metro Police have established a force multiplier which is assisting the SAPS. We are not establishing a second police force – we all work together,” Best said. He added that a new police station is underway. “As a council, we

agreed in June this year that we needed another police station urgently and we have been given a plot in Bethelsdorp for this,” Best added. The minister also commended the local police for their hard work to bring about safety in the Bay. “The police are doing a thankless job, even with bullets flying in the face of death, you keep going forward. “I want to encourage them to continue with the fantastic job that they are doing.” Mbalula promised the community leaders that he would be back in two weeks’ time for further engagements and follow-ups.

SASSA warns of fake SMS THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned beneficiaries not to fall prey to the recent fake SMS from people claiming to be SASSA officials. According to a media statement released by SASSA, these fraudsters claim that there is a Christmas competition which SASSA beneficiaries should enter in order to win a prize. “As a condition to enter such a competition, these fraudsters then ask beneficiaries to send their ID numbers, pins and SASSA card numbers,” the statement read. Beneficiaries are urged to ignore and delete these messages. The statement said SASSA officials would never ask for pins or SASSA card numbers, adding

that the agency did not run any Christmas competitions. “Beneficiaries are reminded to keep their pins secret and not disclose their card and ID numbers at all.” Acting SASSA CEO Pearl Bengu said the beneficiaries of social grants needed to be extra vigilant during this time of the year, as there were many fraudsters who would target the innocent and vulnerable. “Beneficiaries should call SASSA on 0800 601 011 whenever they are offered something that sounds too good to be true because SASSA’s mandate is limited to paying social grants,” Bengu said. – REPORTER

Improved refugee travel document launched REPORTER IN another major step towards better refugee and asylum-seeking management, the Department of Home Affairs introduced a hugely improved refugee travel document this month. The new version machine-readable travel document for refugees has been designed and developed using the latest passport production technology and security standards to include a pure polycarbonate data-page for personalisation by laser engraving. According to a statement, the earlier version was introduced in 2009, but the new version was necessitated after the UNHCR and ICAO published comprehensive international guidelines. “Machine-readable travel documents are more secure because security considerations play an ever-increasing role due to the risks of document and identity fraud. They not only increase security and trust among states, but also enhance the level of confidence in the users, in this case, refugees, who will travel with them,” the statement said. “They facilitate the safe and regular movement of refugees and thereby reduce the risk of exploitation, abuse, violence and human trafficking.” The improved refugee travel document has the following new features: ) Enhanced security features enabled by more advanced production technology.

) The name of the document has been changed from passport to travel document. ) The following return class has been inserted, “The holder is authorised to return to the Republic of South Africa within the period of validity specified in this document.” ) A page (30) has been included to add the names of the parents of a refugee child to minimise the risks such as abduction and child trafficking. It will, however, be left blank for now until the finalisation of the enhancements of the department’s National Immigration Information System. ) The amendment of the endorsement to specify the applicant’s country of origin in the travel document to which he/she is not allowed to travel. Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Fatima Chohan, said, “We are giving further effect to our strong human rights culture that was introduced from 1994 to replace the crime of apartheid while ensuring that the right to security for citizens, as well as migrants, are upheld.” “As a country, we must strike a balance between our humanitarian values and our responsibility to ensure safety and security for all citizens and migrants alike,” she said. Holders of valid refugee travel documents will still be allowed to use the existing travel documents until the date of expiry. The document will be valid for the same period of the validity of the Section 24 refugee permit.

Gardening sector struggles as drought cuts business THANDI SETOKOE AS Nelson Mandela Bay’s dam levels continue to drop, the landscaping and gardening sector has been negatively affected by what has been described as one the worst droughts to hit the province. Bruce Basson, owner of Green Acres Landscaping, said it has been extremely difficult for gardening businesses, especially with the current water restrictions in place. “It has far-reaching effects for the entire industry, not only garden centres – it affects the livelihoods as well,” the horticulturist said. Basson said his company has reported a re-

tail drop in turnover of approximately 70%, which is huge for any business. “Our biggest plight is that when the municipality introduced the heavy water regulations, it resulted in some residents cutting back on gardens, which really affected the gardening industry. “Yes, now and then we do get gardening tenders from the odd customers who have boreholes and we also water-wise gardens – as we try and encourage people to go for water-wise plants, but it’s not enough work.” He said clients no longer purchased as many seedlings and for many‚ a perfect lawn is no longer a priority. “This is extremely worrying and something needs to be done to get the gardening industry

The current yield for the Motherwell Groundwater Point is 20 million litres of water per day. Responding to restrictions or penalties with regards to water usage for car washes, hairdressing salons, to name a few, Mniki said, “The greater the water usage the more you will pay. “Such companies are aware and are already feeling the pinch to such an extent some have even come up with their own ways of harvesting rain water to mitigate the negative effect on their budgets,” Mniki said. He added that the city was also looking at other potential groundwater explorations inside the municipal boundaries to find additional water sources.

back on track.” Ten years ago when the city experienced its previous drought, Basson had to close down his nursery, which had been operational for 12 years. “It hurts. I lost a lot of money,” he said, adding that there were no customers coming in and sales dried up. “I had to close the doors and walk away.” Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said the recent opening of the borehole water source in the Motherwell cemetery was one of the municipality’s ways of trying to elevate the negative impact of the water restrictions to communities and businesses, more especially businesses that use water as a critical part of their operations.

NMBM declares city ready for initiation season REPORTER IT is all system go for Nelson Mandela Bay as the Public Health Directorate has finished the necessary preparations in time for the annual pilgrimage to initiation sites across the Metro. Port Elizabeth is one of the most successful metros when it comes to keeping the number of incidents during and after the initiation season low. Unfortunately, an initiate died last year following an alleged drug overdose. This was, however, an isolated incident and

was not linked to the tradition itself. Over the past few months, ward councillors, Public Health Standing Committee members, traditional surgeons and nurses have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming initiation season to ensure that there are zero incidents. They have been taken through intensive workshops and these have also been extended to prospective initiates and their parents for information-sharing purposes. “It is quite important that all the role players are made ready before the start of each season in order to ensure that this sacred Xhosa

tradition is not tainted and lives are spared during this time,” read a recent statement by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM). “Cautionary measures have been taken and this has been done through signing legal forms by all the parties concerned. Medical doctors will be dispatched to key health facilities where communities can easily reach them for urgent medical assistance. “These forms include a precircumcision medical examination form, a parental consent form, permission to perform circumcision form and permission to run an initiation

school.” A final oversight tour of circumcision sites was undertaken on October 26 and 27 and some of the sites were found to have accumulated refuse and are currently being cleaned by the Waste Sub Directorate. The NMBM will also provide tanked water and, where possible, piped water to ensure that initiates do not travel long distances to get access to water. “As a caring city, the municipality will continue to provide all the necessary support as soon as the season commences until the last initiate has left the initiation site,” the NMBM concluded.

Metro to stamp out misuse of official vehicles REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has warned that it will take drastic action against the rampant misuse of official vehicles by government employees. Chairman of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) Councillor Lance Grootboom said currently, the Metro has more than 2 000 vehicles on its vehicle register and these comprise of small cars, bakkies, trucks, motocycles, trailers, mobile plant and civil engineering equipment. “It is important for the NMBM to create an environment where the responsible management of the municipal fleet is engrained in the officials. “The responsible managing of the fleet means less vehicle downtime, reduced maintenance costs and an increased productivity and service delivery within the

various functional areas where our fleet is used,” Grootboom said. He said that a report on the investigations into the suspected misuse of the fleet was tabled by the Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate at the recent MPAC meeting. “This report, dated July 2017, shows instances where disciplinary action was recommended against officials and what action had been taken in this respect. “Through active citizenry, a total of 78 cases of the suspected misuse of the municipal fleet have so far been reported by the public,” Grootboom said. “Of these 78 reported cases, the investigations have led to recommendations for disciplinary action to be instituted for 52 of these reported incidents (66.67%). “Of these 52 incidents where disciplinary action was recommended, to date, only four officials have had disciplinary action instituted against them (7.69%).”

Grootboom said that essentially, not enough was being done to ensure that the suspects were held accountable, adding that the institution needed to act with greater swiftness and with a firmer hand to stamp out the prevalence of the misuse of the fleet. “The residents of this Metro must be applauded for proactively reporting these incidents and we encourage them to continue performing this important role in assisting us to bring these suspects to book. “It is always encouraging to see the residents of a municipality working hand-inhand with council to ensure that any wrongdoing is stamped out of the institution. “The misuse of fleet, as well as the lack of action taken against the responsible officials, will no longer be accepted and this will be closely monitored by MPAC. “All the responsible officials must be held accountable.”

Ford Wildlife Foundation supports Wessa programme REPORTER THE Ford Wildlife Foundation (FWF) recently handed over a new Ford Ranger to the Wessa Environment Education Programme, which aims to encourage the conservation of South Africa’s coastline through coastal education. Wessa is currently training and developing 43 youth from local coastal communities in the Eastern and Southern Cape. The youth, who have taken on the role of beach stewards, are based at 15 beaches in the area, and have been involved in implementing more than 65 environmental education activities in the region over the past year. Through this project, Wessa is working closely with the municipalities and schools in the region and all the beach stewards are working towards receiving an NQF level 5 certificate in environmental education and training development practices (EETDP)

through Wessa, which will equip them with the knowledge and skills required to deliver educational programmes more effectively. “Wessa is proud of the ongoing partnership and close collaboration with the Ford Wildlife Foundation,” said Vincent Shacks, General Manager: Ecotourism at Wessa. “The Foundation has supported conservation and environmental education programmes over the past 26 years and through their support, Wessa has been able to strengthen the impact of its coastal educational work, aimed at the preservation of our rich and irreplaceable heritage as people caring for the earth.” The Ford Wildlife Foundation does not provide a cash donation to the conservation projects it supports, instead Ford’s partner organisations are equipped with Ford Rangers. The vehicles are used to help project operations, such as transporting field equipment, helping vets reach sick or poached animals, or translocating the animals themselves.

Charities to benefit from Christmas in Mount Pleasant REPORTER ULTIMATE Life Ministries, in conjunction with the Ark Centre PE, is preparing to host the second annual Christmas in Mount Pleasant next month. The charity fundraising event was launched last year and held in aid of CANSA. This year, however, the organisers decided to hold the event in aid of several animal charities, including the AWS, AACL, Cat Care and the EC Horse Care Unit. There will be refreshments for sale, as well as a bring-and-braai. Santa will also be handing out presents that parents deliver beforehand and the children can enjoy the jumping castles, face painting and other activities. According to Pastor Michael Hutchinson of Ultimate Life Ministries, they will not be lighting the tree this year at the event due to the sun setting too late. Instead, they will have a large 6m tall Christmas tree, which attending individuals are encouraged to decorate with handmade decorations. “As this is a non-profit event, we are asking the community and businesses for their support in donating or sponsoring this event. We ask for donations of animal food, hay and other items for the charities. We are also looking for volunteers to help out at the event,” Hutchinson said. This year’s Christmas in Mount Pleasant will take place on December 2 in the park in Gladys Road from 2pm to 6pm. Entry is R10 per adult and R5 per child. For more info visit the Christmas in the Park, Mount Pleasant 2017 Facebook page.

Charity golf event raises R26 000 for rhino cause

TWO TONE DINING TABLE

From

RHINO conservation received a welcome boost when the annual Barney’s Charity Golf Day raised a staggering R26 625 for the Chipembere Rhino Foundation. The golf day event was held on November 2 at the Humewood Golf Club and was attended by OLLI, a life-sized fibreglass rhino. “Thanks to all the participants, we were able to raise funds for this year’s charity recipient, the Chipembere Rhino Foundation, a local registered non-profit and public benefit organisation working to protect and preserve the diminishing number of rhino in Southern Africa,” said Craig Mittens, co-owner of Barney’s Tavern. After a very successful first Charity Golf Day held in May last year, in aid of the Walmer Angel Project, Barney’s Tavern decided to make it an annual event. “The aim of the golf day is to support a different charity each year, thus, giving back to the community that we live in,” added Mittens. “A friend of ours, Greg Harvey from the local Wildschutsberg Game Reserve, recently lost five precious rhinos, which really brought home the need for aggressive and active rhino conservation. “We are thrilled to be able to raise this donation for Chipembere.” At the handover event held on November 10 the monies collected for the Chipembere Rhino Foundation (CRF) were officially handed over to Richard Pearse, a lifelong CRF volunteer, committed and trained nature conservationist and skilled specialist guide, who is part of the Game Rangers Association of Africa, FGASA and TACTRAC on behalf of the CRF. “It is a privilege to be the beneficiary of this year’s Barney’s Charity Golf Day fundraiser. “We also appreciate the platform to introduce our foundation and its rhino conservation projects to the participants,” said Pearse. “With the support

Bolton, from One Land Love It (OLLI), and his family, created a rhinopoaching awareness campaign, in which three generations of the family cycled around the country, spreading the message that protecting our natural heritage is the responsibility of all generations. “Our world is faced with conservation crises that see iconic species teetering on the brink of extinction,” said Bolton. “If we can’t stop the relentless deci-

mation of our rhino, what hope do we have for the future of our wildlife? Our #JointCustody campaign challenges ordinary people, businesses and organisations to collaborate. “This generation holds the power to turn the tide against poaching. We have One Land – Love It…this is OLLI’s simple call to action.” Brent Cook, founder of the Chipembere Rhino Foundation, thanked Mittens and his team. “The money received from the fundraiser is a significant boost to rhino conservation in the Eastern Cape and we look forward to applying it to our key projects that are growing and making an impact on the ground, where it counts.”

A feast of dance and movement awaits REPORTER

LOVERS of dance are in for a treat when the Walmer School of Dance presents The Art of Movement at the PE Opera House on Saturday, December 2. From an opening by guest artists, African Drumbeat, to a junior mini-ballet, group and individual pieces featuring sizzling jazz, sultry tango, ballet, contemporary, ballroom and tap, the show promises an exciting feast for the senses. Walmer School of Dance owner and teacher Troy Coffey who has choreographed and directed The Art of Movement, said the year-end show was an opportunity to showcase the various styles of dance taught at the school, and a chance for the young performers from preschool age to matriculants, to gain valuable stage experience.

“For some of the school’s senior pupils, this will be their last show at school level before they head off for further studies and an opportunity to celebrate a year of outstanding achievements,” Coffey said. The senior school pupils include Kate Weakley, Louise Daniel, Anneke Claassen and Skye Phillips, who this year excelled at the PE Dance Festival. Weakley won the senior ballet championship, Daniel the senior modern championship, while Claassen won the 17 to 18 years’ age category at the festival in both ballet and modern. Phillips, who along with the other three seniors recently travelled to New York on a scholarship to the American Academy of Ballet Summer School of Excellence, will be dancing as well as showcasing her singing talent. Another dance festival winner, Ella Coffey, who won the trophy for the most promising tap dancer, will be performing a Charlie Chap-

lin routine choreographed by tap teacher Shirley Smith. The juniors’ mini-ballet is based on the story of The Snowman – a magical piece about a boy who builds a snowman that comes to life in his dreams. Ballet and contemporary dance groups range from some charming baby flower fairies to the senior girls in a striking group dance called Snow. Bookings for The Art of Movement are now open at Computicket. Tickets are R120 for adults and R100 for learners and pensioners. There will be shows starting at both 3pm and 7pm.

PE gymnast is World Champion REPORTER THE Bay’s Bianca Zoonekynd has made history by winning the double mini-trampoline event at the 2017 Trampoline World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria recently. The last South African to win the prestigious title was Derrick Lotz, 37 years ago in Brig, Switzerland. What makes her achievement even more amazing is that Zoonekynd was in a car crash just three months ago in which she suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung. In the double mini-trampoline discipline, Bianca was placed second. In the final, Bianca’s performance in a breathtaking routine was well received and the wait for the results began. It was tense moments when the judges had to deliberate, not once but twice, before the final results were revealed. “I could barely stand the wait and I covered my eyes while waiting for the results. I really could not believe that I had taken the World gold medal,” Zoonekynd said. After returning to SA, there would be no rest for her as she dove right back into training students at Mandy’s Tumbling and Trampoline Gymnastics school where she, her mother

Mandy Zoonekynd and brother, Lee, are coaches. “I would like to generate more funding for the gym to enable more kids from previously disadvantaged communities the opportunity to train and compete at these international events. “I would like to create awareness of this incredible sport and to see more South Africans take the gold.”

On the challenge a dark event poses, Magnetic Storm creative services head David Limbert said, “The room will be unlit for most of the event to give guests an idea of what it’s like to be blind and rely on their other senses. “However, when the guests arrive, they will enter a dimmed area where colour will be used to create an atmosphere for what is about to be experienced before they step into darkness,” he said.

Die man was baie gaaf. Skakel of whatsapp hom vir die beste lewe by 078 466 5511. ‘n Kans kom eenmaal in ‘n leeftyd. Probeer dit!!

KINGWONDERISPOWERFULANDFAST

I am Lucille from Plettenberg Bay. Writing this is the only way to thank King Wonder. I worked for 30 years as a nurse. I was so tired of that hard labour night shifts and early moning trains. I was having too much loans, I was having sleepless nights. I got King Wonder’s number in magazine. I explained him about my financial crises, he told me not to worry. He gave options - magic ring and wallet, short boys and casino. I chose to put money in my account within 4 hours the money was in, I’m so happy now. He even helped my brother Adriano to bring his wife back the same day, they are not fighting anymore.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

< Ibhayi Rhythmic Gymnastics Club successfully represented the Eastern Cape at the annual SA Gym Games recently. At the back are Monique Slabbert, Emily Pattinson, Chante Kotze, Kayla Blandford and Dayna Venter. Kneeling are Kristin Conradie and Summer Meikle. In front is Linmari Botha.

Much to gain in Abu Dhabi THE final round of the 2017 F1 season is upon us as the paddock heads east to the twilight race of Abu Dhabi. Introduced to the calendar several years ago, the Yas Marina Circuit has delivered resplendent views of F1 cars at dusk since 2009. With no expense spared, the circuit and surrounding facilities are, arguably, the grandest of the lot. Complete with its Ferrari World theme park and several thousand coloured LED lights, all the facets of the Abu Dhabi circuit combine to deliver a visual spectacle of note. Despite not being known for delivering the most memorable on track racing, the Abu Dhabi-based circuit has nevertheless seen the creation of several memorable moments for the sport. It was here after all, in 2010, that Sebastian Vettel won his first world championship title and here too where Kimi Raikkonen, en route to victory, uttered the now famous “leave me alone, I know what I’m doing” radio message. Last year Lewis Hamilton turned over every trick in his book to win the title and even attempted to back rival Nico Rosberg into the clutches of other cars with the hope that he would be overtaken and thus not win the title. Alas, none of Hamilton’s moves had done the trick and Rosberg took a well-deserved win. It’s a far different story 12 months later. Not only does Hamilton arrive in Abu Dhabi as a four-time champion but also there’s no Nico Rosberg on the other side of the Mercedes garage. Instead, it’s Valtteri Bottas who sits in the

other Mercedes cockpit and who has a lot to prove. It’s been a lacklustre second half of the season for Bottas, who has summarily been blown away by Hamilton. While he scored a pole in Brazil, he folded at the first sight of the front wing of Vettel’s Ferrari. He needs a big performance this weekend in order to beginning righting his ship for 2018. If not, Hamilton may well blow him away, again. Similarly, Daniel Ricciardo could do with putting one over teammate Verstappen who has stolen the limelight from the Aussie this season. The Yas Marina circuit, 5.5km in length, does have several long straits in its layout but the second, more technical sector, should play to the Red Bull’s strengths. “The final sector at Yas Marina is actually quite technical so you have to be really precise there, but it should also be our strongest part of the track,” said Verstappen. “There are quite a few overtaking opportunities to make the race interesting, before the long straight at the hairpin and then at the end of the straight, under braking, for the next chicane section.” While the constructor’s championship has been settled at the top of the standings, the battle for sixth is going down to the wire. Only six points separate Toro Rosso, Renault and Haas, and with the promise of a big payday for finishing sixth, the battle between these three teams could be the highlight of the weekend. Through 19 rounds and 1 147 racing laps, there’s still much to play for and gain in the final race of the 2017 season.

Crusaders win Zwifa First Division League SELBY MADIKANE

< Zwifa President Mzikayise Quntu with the winners of the Zwifa First Division League, Real Crusaders B, who proudly displayed their trophy and gold medals.

REAL Crusaders finished the Zwide Football Association (Zwifa) First Division League in grand style when they lifted the trophy in victory on Sunday. Crusaders lost only two and drew one of the 14 games that they had played during the course of the league. Saders, as Crusaders are affectionately called by their loyal supporters, won 11 of their games. The KwaZakhele-based side accumulated 34 league points after they scored 37 goals. Head coach Mdibanisi Kakancu stated that he was very excited about his side’s excellent performance. Kakancu revealed that his side put more effort into each game that they played. “I am elated because my boys are league winners. They have pleased me because there was cooperation between the boys and myself. “These boys worked very hard and they did not disappoint me. They followed my instruc-

tions.” Real Crusaders B received a floating trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up, Bay Tigers, received silver medals.

Golden Aces and Manchester City B were the last two teams on the log table with 11 and four league points respectively.

Spartans claim NMBBA Mayoral Cup title SELBY MADIKANE SPARTANS Basketball Club played their hearts out when they dethroned the Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association (NMBBA) Mayoral Cup defending champions, Gemineyez Basketball Club, in the final game, which ended 59-56 in their favour at the Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Complex Centre on Sunday. The atmosphere was electrifying, while the local DJ played music to keep the hundreds of supporters in high spirits. The defending champions started the game as the hot favourites. In the first quarter, Gemineyez dictated the terms in so much that they eventually led 14-10. Everyone thought that Gemineyez would be the double champions as they registered a com-

fortable 33-20 lead in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Gemineyez were 40-25 ahead. Finally, in the last quarter, Gemineyez seemed to be complacent, but their opponents clawed their way back into the game. Gemineyez’s joy was cancelled after Spartans won the game by a close 59-56 margin. Two players, Didier Njova and Ridwaan Jobson, played an instrumental role in Spartans’ victory. NMBM Mayoral Cup project manager Thembinkosi Mengu said the tournament was growing more and more. Mengu stated that their goal of mass participation had become a reality. “We have noticed that the clubs are so interested and the games are watched by many fans. “The sporting codes that are played are soccer, rugby, netball, basketball, cricket, boxing

and volleyball. The budget has been cut from R2 million to R1,8 million, with the aim of minimising costs. Some federations are aggrieved after we announced the new budget. We are happy that the games are played,” said Mengu.

Lion City lose to lacklustre Milan MATTA Milan rubbed salt into Lion City’s wounds when they defeated them 2-1 during their ABC Motsepe League clash at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. Both sides suffered huge defeats last Saturday when City went down 4-2 to Mthatha City, while Milan were defeated 6-0 by Bizana Pondo Chiefs. Milan drew three games this season, while City won only two games and drew one so far in their seven games. The first half ended in a goalless draw. In the second half, City’s back wings looked shaky and Milan’s wings took advantage of that. Milan skipper, Thamsanqa Tibe, rounded City left wing back Sinolwethu Pakana and whipped in a long cross to Mpakamo Jininda who scored his side’s opening goal in the 57th minute. City could have equalised, but their substitute, Mkhuseli Mgodleli, missed the cross that was supplied to him by Luxolo Bibo Tobi in the 70th minute. Mbangetha Thando passed the

cross that was earlier missed by Mgodleli and sent it to his skipper, Tibe. He delivered a good pass to Xolisile Mbada who scored Milan’s second goal in the 71st minute. City caught the visitors’ defenders sleeping with Malizole Freedom Funani banging in their consolation goal in the 83rd minute. City supporters’ hopes were shattered after Mnoneleli Mayeye Zitho’s shot flew over the goals with goalkeeper Ayabonga Mbilini beaten. The game between FC Buffalo and SUBS did not take place, but Safa EC Secretary Isaac Klaas stated the reason would be made known after match officials submitted their reports. Ice hockey player makes PE Oval Track hosts raceway meeting the cut for US tournament THANDI SETOKOE PORT ELIZABETH-based ice hockey player Talithia Deyzel is set to get an opportunity to go overseas for a chance to see how all things hockey are done on the other parts of the world. The 21-year-old has been selected as a reserve for the South African team who will be travelling to Bulgaria for the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group B Qualification, due to take place from December 4 to December 7. The young star was spotted during an inter-provincial tournament recently held in Pretoria where the selection of the South African ice hockey team took place. “It’s a great honour to represent my country in this sport. I have worked hard and now my hard work has finally paid off,” she

said, adding that she now has to work even harder as she prepares for the tournament. “The training sessions are intense. “I do off-ice shooting and stick handling practice for one to two hours every day. I also try to skate at least once a week during a public session. My training really takes up most of my time, but it is worth the sacrifice.” Deyzel described that she fell in love with the sport after seeing an NHL game on television, however, due to the fact that there was no ice rink in Port Elizabeth she couldn’t pursue it. “So, in 2015 when I found out that there would be an ice rink at Baywest Mall, I was very excited to start playing. “As soon as the rink opened my parents bought me my first pair of skates and thereafter I learnt how to skate.” Since then she has been playing for the Eastern Province Ice Hockey Association. “I can’t wait to go overseas. I’m excited to see a new country, but I’m more excited to play ice hockey against some of the best teams in the world.” Club president Rob Kendrick said, “I feel honoured to know that she has the potential to go far.”

Dirt Oval racing fans can look forward to the next event at the PE Oval Track Raceway on Saturday, at the Club’s circuit in Mission Road in Greenbushes. Competitors will participate in seven different categories ranging from beginners to modified V8 race cars. Close, exciting racing can be expected throughout the evening and a variety of refreshment stalls will be available on site. Spectators are also welcome to park around the circuit at no extra charge. Entrance fee is R50 for adults and R20 for children under the age of 12. Racing will start at 6pm. For more info contact Karen on 082 605 3455.
