NEW ELECTRONIC TRAFFIC LIGHTS TO REPLACE INEFFECTIVE BOOM GATES

Early warning for Third Avenue dip THANDI SETOKOE

A

N electronic traffic light system has now officially been activated on the top of the Third Avenue dip in Newton Park. This light will now alert motorists not to pass through when the road has been closed off due to heavy rainfall which results in the low-level bridge flooding. Speaking at the launch last week Tuesday, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security at Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality John Best said the system, controlled from the control room at the South End Fire station, was crucial to avoid major disrup-

tion to motorists since the road was used daily as a major thoroughfare. “The boom gates currently used were ineffective. People were cutting the locks and driving through regardless. They really don’t comprehend the danger of crossing the bridge once it has flooded,” Best said. He said he had witnessed incidents where vehicles had been swept off the bridge, adding that it didn’t take a lot of rain to flood the bridge – just 25mm of rain, then the bridge would start overflowing slightly. “This is all in the safety of our motorists. Through disaster management and information technology departments, we have come up with this electronic idea and it’s a concept that we believe will work.

“As soon as the bridge gets to a certain level where it is unsafe to cross, there will be a call made to the control room. The control room will then switch on the traffic lights which will go red,” Best described. He said traffic signs would be put up and a fine of R1 500 could be issued to offenders who disregarded the traffic signs. Explaining the benefits of the new electronic system, Best said the problem with the booms was that they were very manpowerintensive. “Once we realise there is a flood, we send officers to physically close the booms. “Frustration follows when the dip is safe and the booms are still locked. “We then have to send officers urgently to

unlock them and at times some of the officers are off duty. So, we want to remove the booms totally and have an electronic system that will work.” Best said the booms would be removed within six months when the new electronic system proved to be fully effective. He further added that the second phase of the electronic system would include lights on the William Moffett Expressway. “The problem is once you have turned off William Moffett into the Third Avenue dip area and it’s closed, it becomes an inconvenience to turn around. The road can also be opened with much less effort when water levels have subsided enough to allow traffic to pass through again,” Best said.

Trollip takes tough stance on problem buildings REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip has declared that all buildings in Port Elizabeth’s inner city will undergo an urgent assessment and any structure found to be noncompliant in terms of national legislation or municipal by-laws will be shut down. On February 12, Trollip and Human Settlements MMC Councillor Nqaba Bhanga visited 13 Western Road in Central, where a raid by the metro police and South African Police Service (SAPS) was carried out recently. “The utterly vile condition of the now empty building’s interior is simply unconscionable; a horror to think that it had previously been illegally occupied by over 100 people prior to the eviction,” Trollip said. “What concerns me is that we must have had officials who have sanctioned the fact that people have been living here and we can’t tolerate

that anymore. We can’t allow buildings like this to exist in our city where people are living in completely unhygienic and unsafe conditions.” He added that inner-city decay begins with one or two buildings like 13 Western Road, which triggers the decentralisation of businesses and industries. “What is left is surging criminality, drug abuse, prostitution and the proliferation of unimaginable social depravity. “It is time to take back our metro’s CBD (Central Business District). This coalition government will not allow irresponsible landlords to turn our inner city into a slum.” Trollip said a “problem buildings” by-law is due to be promulgated by council in the very near future, which will only strengthen the administration’s capacity to deal with non-compliant and derelict buildings. However, Bhanga explained that rather than wait for such a by-law to be promulgated, they would use exiting laws, such as the Health and Safety Act, to get rid of the buildings. “There was a fire here (13 Western Road) in 2016. We, as a political party came here and gave blankets to the people who were left homeless. Absolutely nothing has been done to this building since that fire took place, but people continue to live here,” Trollip continued. “The owner of the building has allowed this building to decay to such an extent that it is completely unsafe and, as Bhanga said, we are going to use existing legislation before the enactment of a problem building by-law to make sure that people can’t live in buildings like this.” The mayor added that they will hold the owners of the buildings accountable and, if they refuse to take responsibility, the municipality will expropriate the building. A joint team of the Office of the COO, Safety and Security, Human Settlements and the Office of the Executive Mayor met on February 13 to plan future intervention operations. “A legal team will be on standby to process

and expedite all urgent court matters, which we are confident will result in court orders and shutdowns. We will work with the SAPS and the Office of the Sheriff of the Court to ensure

the rejuvenation of our inner city. “We have decided that enough is enough – we are determined to create a safe city, rich with opportunity for all,” Trollip concluded. < Executive Mayor Athol Trollip and Human Settlements MMC Councillor Nqaba Bhanga visited 13 Western Road in Central last Monday.

SA Agulhas returns to Bay port from Antarctica THANDI SETOKOE WITH 20 cadets on board who have enjoyed no less than three months of continuous sailing both across the Indian Ocean and to the southern seas, as part of their experiential training, the SA Agulhas returned to Port Elizabeth last week Friday. The vessel, which is the South African Maritime Safety Authority’s (SAMSA) dedicated training vessel, sailed to Antarctica on November 24 last year and was chartered by an Indian science team who boarded the ship at Port Louis, Mauritius. Explaining the importance of the training programme, SAMSA’s operations manager of maritime special projects, Ronel Shortt, said SAMSA and many other role players within South Africa had a responsibility to help develop the environment in the maritime economy. “By giving these cadets practical hands on experience at sea, we make them a bit more mar-

I have always wanted to go to the southern latitudes, so, it was a great experience going so far south and seeing my first iceberg.” SAMSA’s chief operating officer, Sobantu Tilayi said the oceans had the potential to con SETOKOE tribute up to R177 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP) and create just over one million south where they encountered severe weather. jobs by 2033. “The cadets carried out many different roles The cadets are all enrolled in the national cawhich included navigation of the vessel. det programme managed by SAIMI, with the ex“They also got an opportunity to work with perience obtained on their Antarctic voyage the chief engineer and his team, where they fo- counting towards their sea time to obtain their cused on the maintenance of the ship’s power STCW certificates of competency. plant,” Shortt added. NMB Business Chamber welcomes Isuzu REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber (NMBBC) welcomed Isuzu to Nelson Mandela Bay last week Friday and congratulated the company on the opening and unveiling of its Struandale plant in Port Elizabeth. CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber Nomkhita Mona said the investment confirms Isuzu’s confidence in the city as an investment location. “It is clear the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro remains an attractive destination and stronghold for the automotive industry. This launch is in line with Nelson Mandela Bay’s stated intent of positioning itself as Africa’s automotive manufacturing hub,” Mona said. She said the road towards stability in the automotive industry will be supported by the Department of

The Acres Centre, Norvic Road 041 363 0990

Trade and Industry’s automotive production and development programme through the 2035 SA automotive masterplan. “The policy environment will focus on ensuring that South Africa accounts for 1% of global vehicle production volumes by 2035. “Development and empowerment of black-owned business for inclusive growth as well as increasing local content are the main agenda points for future planning,” Mona added. “We remain encouraged by some of the packages and incentives created by government for the automotive industry that will create a cascading effect of wealth creation for downstream businesses and communities. “As the Business Chamber, we encourage our big businesses to engage in linkages with the smaller businesses in the region.” Commenting on increased production

levels, transformation and localisation, Mona said they wanted the Bay’s automotive economy to lead and innovate in critical areas. “One of the major issues for existing investors is an environment characterised by ease of doing business. The Business Chamber will continue to lobby to ensure that the necessary environment and provisions are made for our auto manufacturers. “The Isuzu investment is a much-needed response to mitigate the General Motors South Africa disinvestment, which would have been a big blow for the city’s unemployment rate. “We are encouraged by the fact that Isuzu would absorb most of these jobs,” she said, adding that NMBBC congratulates Isuzu South Africa on this significant investment and achievement, and wishes the company everything of the best in the future.

Cooper, who was born in 1921 in England, found his passion for painting naval ships and old sailing ships when he was called up for active duty as a Royal Marine at the age of 18 and fought against the Germans in the Second World War. He was awarded eight medals for personal courage and bravery shown on the notorious Arctic Convoy Route during the war. Cooper immigrated with his family to South Africa in 1964. He will be available to meet the public outside Art on Main on Saturday from 11am. The exhibition will continue until March 6 and is open for viewing Monday to Friday from 9am to 5:30pm and on weekends from 9am to 5pm. For more info contact 041 367 1863.

Local stone artist hopes to empower youth THANDI SETOKOE HIS creations take pride in as faraway places as England, Paraguay and Japan, and locally his work can be seen in big companies such as Isuzu, Volkswagen and FNB, to name a few. Using stones that have fallen off from the mountains onto the road, the talented Thembekile Ntshiza of Missionvale creates sculptures using only a screw driver and hammer. The 43-year-old discovered this unique tal-

ent in 1997 following a dream where his late grandmother was telling him that he could use his hands to do great things. “By then I had lost my job and was desperately trying to make ends meet. A friend of mine suggested that I do something special with stone,” Ntshiza said. Amazed with the end product, he took the initiative to produce more sculptures. “I have made portraits of all the Nelson

Mandela Bay mayors, from Nceba Faku to Athol Trollip,” he said. Ntshiza has also made a badge of an English rugby club, a carving for a citrus fruit company in Paraguay and for Abadare Cables, who sent the piece to Japan. “I’m planning on carving a sculpture for the newly elected President, Cyril Ramaphosa. As soon as I have collected enough stones I will start working and then plan a trip to deliver it to him.”

On the local front and in-between the bigger pieces, he crafts gifts for 21st birthdays as well as tombstones. Ntshiza gets his materials from the mountains between Hankey and Humansdorp, and once completed, polishes the sculptures with shoe polish to give the stone a special shine. “Going forward I would like to teach the local youth how to use this skill. It really saddens me to see unemployed youth falling prey to social ills,” the father of four, who now makes his living from the art, said.

Thembekile Ntshiza took a week to carve this sculpture for a local businessman.

REPORTER A COLLABORATION between various Port Elizabeth dance studios will see local talent keeping their audience entertained during a night of dazzling performances on Friday and Saturday. Flamenco De Algoa’s Tablao Flamenco will be a fiery performance by Carlo’s flamenco dancers to live music. The musical talent will include Spanish guest guitarist Demi Fernandez. Building on the first performance, the McWilliams Academy of Irish Dance will have spectators on the edge of their seats with no less than three energetic toe-tapping routines, namely Trave, Warrior and Reel Around The Sun. Ellen Bunting’s Dance Academy will then thrill with a Broadway jazz group, as well as a sparkling tap dance and lyrical contemporary dance item. This will be followed by a classical ballet performance by both the Susan Zerbst School of Ballet and the Walmer School of Dance, as well as a duet by two accomplished dancers, entitled Dance of the Fireflies.

Entrepreneur workshop to empower local women THANDI SETOKOE WITH the vision of empowering women in her community, event organiser Noluvuyo Sodela will be hosting an entrepreneur workshop on Saturday, at the Black Impala Tshisa Nyama in Grahamstown Road. According to Sodela, the purpose of the workshop is to mobilise women in the Metro to create their own job opportunities as creative entrepreneurs by providing a platform for relationship-building, collaboration and business support. Under the theme ‘Another Woman’s Trash Is Another Woman’s Treasure’ the event promises a day of dialogue discus-

sions and networking sessions focusing on the challenges that women face in the work place and society in general. “Discussions will be aimed at seeking solutions and we will also look at ways in which one can get assistance when looking for funding in order to start a business,” the 25-year-old said. Explaining how the theme came about, she said the title was inspired by individuals in society who undermine other people’s jobs. “For example, if a person sells vegetables at the robots, they get undermined, whereas that specific job is that individual’s treasure,” Sodela said. ADVERTORIAL: THE COOP MICA

Help your livestock thrive through these trying times THOUGH the seemingly neverending drought that is still plaguing South Africa has hit everyone hard, the ones who have paid the highest price are the local farmers and animals. To make matters worse, the effects of the drought have been complicated even further by the unpredictable climate, which has claimed a large number of livestock over the past year. Several reports have described many animals dying overnight due to extreme and unexpected temperatures. To add to this, the lack of grazing for the animals and the poor quality of grazing is also

due to the drought. Well, the Co-op Mica can make things just a little easier on them. They stock a wide range of animal feeds that can give the livestock the extra boost they need since their natural habitat can no longer provide them with the nutrients they need after being destroyed by the drought and unforgiving climate. They offer a number of Epol products, including Beef Finisher for cattle, Complete Sheep for sheep and goats, Antelope Pellets for game and Megacalf for young cattle. Epol prides itself on offering feed with the perfect mix of nutri-

ents to ensure a consistent winning formula and boasts specialised ranges of feed for the different needs of farmers. The Co-op also stocks Voermol products, such as Maxi Block for sheep, Rumavite for cattle, Energy Blocks and Protein Blocks for sheep, cattle and goats, a Game Block for game and a Phosphate Block for sheep, horses, cattle and goats. They also have ram, lamb and ewe pellets, which are completely balanced and can be fed as is. It is also an ideal supplementary feed for sheep and goats that spend the night in an enclosure. Most of the Voermol products of-

fered at the Co-op promote the production and reproduction of the target animal and some are ideal to use in dry weather conditions. Energy Block – A feed block with a high energy content to increase production, contains the complete range of minerals. Promotes energy usage from grazing. Recommended supplement for pregnant sheep, goat ewes, cows with calves. A Maxi Block, for instance, is a lick block with a high bypass protein, energy and mineral content that improves production and reproduction in dry pastures especially, while a Protein Block supplies the animals with protein,

Richfield provides students with free access to high-tech devices and data networks – creating a “greener” culture of moving away from the excessive use of paper. Richfield is fully accredited to offer distance learning programmes. Richfield has assisted well over a quarter million South Africans to graduate with sought-after qualifications to enter the job market. Richfield does not receive any subsidies, grants or allowances. Richfield’s CEO, Jay Ramnundlall, emphasised that corporate South Africa should start looking at institutions like Richfield to which they sponsor bursaries, rather than limit their choices to public universities. A feather in its cap is when Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology (RGIT) won the National Business of the Year Award for 2017.

Highbury win Sasol Ladies Playoffs SELBY MADIKANE ONE of the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Women’s Regional League’s most formidable sides, Highbury Ladies FC, kept the Nelson Mandela Bay flag flying after they were promoted to the Sasol Ladies Coastal League following their excellent run in the Sasol Ladies Regional promotional play-offs at the Jan Smuts Stadium in East London last Sunday. The SAFA NMB Women’s Regional League champions proved beyond a doubt that they were the top performing side when they won all their promotional games. Highbury gave the Chris Hani champions, Eluhuweni Ladies, a free soccer lesson after they whacked them 5-0 in their first game. The Alfred Nzo champions, Mahlabathini Ladies, could not go pound for pound as Highbury demolished them 7-0 in their second game. Highbury finished on top of the log table after they edged out the OR Tambo District

champions, Coastal United, 2-0 in their onesided game. According to Highbury Ladies’ head coach, Knox Faas, his side had been waiting for a long time to play in the promotional play-offs. Faas said, “We have been waiting anxiously for these playoffs when the league season curtain was pulled down. We prepared our side thoroughly but playing three games on one day is not good at all.

I want to thank our side for playing their hearts out. I would also like to give my special gratitude to the club chairman, Cameron Klopper, for giving us his full support. “We had been waiting for the day of taking part in the play-offs since last year, but Klopper lifted our spirits.”

Soccer tournament brings community together SELBY MADIKANE THE fifth Zolani Swelindawo Soccer Tournament drew hundreds of community members together at Missionvale Community Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. According to the tournament director, Zolani Swelindawo, the tournament had been growing by leaps and bounds since it was first launched. “I am elated to see so many community members watching the games that are

played here in this area. A great deal of football skills were displayed by the players. These games were enthralling because the teams have given a good account of themselves and that really makes the spectators ecstatic. “The aim of this programme is to combat crime in our community. There are a lot of social ills in our community which jeopardise the future of our youth. “I am extremely happy because some teams come from Uitenhage,” he said. Swelindawo revealed that he dug deep into his pocket to run the tournament

since he initiated it five years ago. “There are no sponsors for this programme, but what matters most is to see the youth taking part in sport instead of abusing drugs. I am deeply concerned with the future of the youth. I would like to take this tournament to the higher level in future,” he concluded. Pioneers turn the tables on Camper United SELBY MADIKANE DESPATCH Pioneers came down from 2-0 to force their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) SAB Regional League game against Camper United into a 2-2 draw at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. Camper took the game to their counterparts from the outset. The home side scored their opening goal courtesy of Samkelo Monki. Camper failed dismally to score goals in the first half and Pioneers seemed to be sluggish, but their veteran midfielder, Dumisani Ngobe Msongelwa, was very instrumental in the centre

of the field. In the last minutes of the first half, Pioneers skipper Luvuyo Tshawe Gewu’s effort went wide with Camper’s goalkeeper well beaten. Camper increased their lead to 2-0 after Lukhanyo Sherriff Rasmeni fired a thunderous shot into the back of the net. Gewu and Msongelwa read each other like an open book after they played good touches. It seemed that Camper were on the edge as their defence made some needless mistakes in crucial areas. Gewu laid a good pass to Msongelwa, who slotted the ball into the near post to leave Camper’s goalkeeper beaten. Msongelwa once again delivered a perfect

pass to Sixoliseni Booysen, who scored Pioneers’ equalising goal in the last minutes of the game. TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

First 2018 F1 cars launched ahead of first tests THIS is the most optimistic time of the year as a new season of Formula 1 approaches the period just before testing commences. Right now, all new cars are aerodynamically flawless, more powerful than anything that’s ever been built, and lighter than a feather. But all too soon, a modest stopwatch will humble them. The first team to launch their 2018 car was the Haas F1 team. The American team chose to forego a typical launch and opted, instead, to release a handful of images online. As the technical regulations have remained largely stable and unchanged, the changes from 2017 to 2018 cars won’t be as obvious. The most noticeable difference is the inclusion of the Halo head protection system. Williams was the second team to introduce its car with a traditional online launch. Chief technical officer Paddy Lowe and head of aero-

dynamics Dirk de Beer have designed the FW41. Lowe said the car “has many new features, most of which are not all that obvious, but externally the team has pursued a very different aerodynamic concept which has allowed us some significant progress in aerodynamic performance. “All Formula One cars are an evolution of what has gone before to some extent, but the FW41 does involve a number of departures from the directions that have been pursued in the past.” While only lap times will tell if Williams have built a quick race car, the 2018 challenger undoubtedly looks more aggressive than its predecessor. Similar to Haas, the Williams also sports the Ferrari-style side pods, which you’re likely to see on more of the midfield cars this season. Naturally, and so as to avoid giving away

any design secrets, some areas of the car has been shrouded in black paint. Beyond the car that has been designed by Williams this season, the other big unknown for the team is its driver line-up. Nonetheless, de facto team principal Claire Williams has described the driver pairing for Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll as “exciting” while highlighting Sirotkin’s impressive work with the technical team. Sauber and Renault were due to launch their respective cars yesterday, followed by Ferrari and Mercedes on Thursday, McLaren on Friday. Toro ICQC 2018-20 Rosso will launch theirs on the first day of testing, February 26.

sets new record

A Grade 7 learner at Harvest Christian School, Colby Els Human, attended two galas recently. At the Madiba Bay Aquatics Gala she placed first a total of 14 times and second only once. She then went on to compete at the Interprovincial Gala, where she received another six awards, of which four are gold and two silver. The highlight, however, was when she broke the current EP 50m butterfly record with a time of 30.96 seconds. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
