NORTHERN SUBURBS: NEW TECHNOLOGY HAD SUCCESS IN CAPE TOWN

Spotter to curb gun violence CANDICE BEZUIDENHOUT

T

ECHNOLOGY that will enable the police, as well as the metro police, to know exactly when a firearm is fired, will be installed during the next two months in the northern suburbs of Port Elizabeth, which are plagued by gang violence. This news was announced by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip only days after the metro police strengthened its visibility in these areas. “This technology, which will be installed in secret places throughout the metro, will drastically reduce the illegal use of firearms and as-

sociated violence in the metro’s most dangerous neighbourhoods,” said Trollip. This Shot Spotter technology was first introduced to Cape Town. It immediately notifies the nearest law enforcement officers when a firearm is fired. “It also leads the police to the exact destination where the firearm is fired. “Apart from reducing drastically the reaction time, it also helps to analyse shooting patterns to inform police operations,” he said. During the first three months after the technology came into force in Manenberg, Cape Town, the number of incidents decreased from 211 to 31. John Best, mayoral committee member on

safety and security, said he hoped that the metro would achieve the same success, especially in the city’s northern areas. “If successful, the coalition government (in the metro) will push for further expansion of the operation,” said Best. Nevertheless, it remains the priority of the police to combat crime, investigate incidents and prosecute criminal cases against suspects, added Trollip. “The municipality extends itself to making this city a safer one and we expect the police to meet us halfway. “With greater police involvement, more equipment and ongoing metro support, gangrelated crimes will decrease.”

Trollip also called on Police Minister Fikile Mbalula to recognize what was happening in the northern areas. “Maybe the minister will see the need to deploy additional resources and build at least one new police station. “The coalition government understands the importance of dealing with crime,” Trollip said. “This can be seen with the launch of two new metro police offices, regular visible policing, the launch of the Ghost Squad and now this technology. “I’m sure residents of the Bay will soon feel safe enough to leave their homes in the evening.”

Metro to roll out online job application system REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is set to roll out an e-recruitment paperless job application system that will eliminate perceived nepotism and unfairness in the recruitment process.

More importantly, the migration from the archaic and costly application process will save the city millions by cutting the use of paper in the application process. This was presented at a mayoral committee meeting by corporate services executive director Vuyo Zitumane, who said the new system would cut the time of sorting through applications to at least one month. Currently, the standard operating procedure stipulates that the application process should be concluded within three months. However, due to the influx of applications for each vacancy, the munici-

pality has had to contend with sifting through tons of applications, with about 85% of these coming from unqualified applicants. With the new digital application system, applicants will apply online and if the candidate does not meet the minimum requirements, the system will immediately send a SMS notification to inform the applicant of this. If one meets the requirements, the system will send the applicant an automated One Time password to his or her cellphone which has to be inserted to verify the person’s legitimacy. Once this is complete, the applicant’s information will be populated to a broad application sheet where it will be dealt with by the recruitment team. “This reaffirms our commitment as a forward-thinking municipality in ensuring that we strengthen our internal operational systems to improve service delivery.

“But also, it shows our innovative approach in working smart by bringing our customers to the digital realm to keep up with global technological systems,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Councillor Athol Trollip. The government recruitment process is perceived to be unfair and tainted, as political and other related interferences in the placement of candidates is fraught with meddling. Essentially, the roll out of this new system would eliminate all these interferences and provide a coherent application process for all deserving candidates. Furthermore, customer care centres will be equipped with kiosks where people can submit their applications under the tutelage support of a designated consultant. This removes the burden of travelling to Brister House for potential candidates to collect applications.

CORRECTION: ‘Residents are negligent’ IN the September 13 edition of PE Express, the article “Residents are negligent” states that there had been three burglaries in one week at the Kragga Kamma Uitspanning retirement village. In fact, there had been one breakin and two attempted burglaries. Colonel Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, confirmed the one burglary only. The PE Express unreservedly apologises for the error. In the report, a resident, Arno Pieterse, was quoted saying that “almost every week the complex is

broken into”. Clea Eckermann, chairperson: board of trustees of Kragga Kamma Uitspanning, says Pieterse’s statement is “factually completely false”, as well as Pieterse’s statement that in the six months that he had been living in the retirement village, there were more than 10 burglaries. According to Eckermann, there were two break-ins last year during the month of December 2016, as well as two break-ins during the last nine months – one, a number of weeks ago and the one that was reported

on in last week’s PE Express. Eckermann said another incident was not a break-in as the “thieves entered the unit through unlocked, open doors. It is believed that the thieves returned, after having been invited into the unit about a week prior to the theft. It appears that they, the thieves, knew what to steal and when to access the unit – the owner was being watched by the thief for an opportune moment to enter the unit when the resident walked out leaving the door open,” said Eckermann.

EP Media to launch new newspaper for Cradock and surrounds REPORTER MEDIA24, publisher of Die Burger, will soon publish a free local newspaper for the Cradock, Middelburg and surrounding areas to bring fresh local news to the communities of this area every week. According to Tasmia Ismail, general manager of Die Burger in the Eastern Cape and EP Media, the first issue of the Mid-Karoo Express newspaper will be published on Thursday, October 5. It is just a day before the start of the popular Fish River Canoe Marathon in Cradock. “A total of 12 000 copies of the Mid-Karoo Express will be distributed every Thursday in towns such as Cradock, Middelburg, Somerset East, Cookhouse, Bedford, Adelaide and Fort Beaufort,” said Ismail. “These are free newspapers and give people in the area the opportunity to read all their local news. EP Media already brings eight very successful local newspapers to the people of the Eastern Cape. “Two of the newspapers, PE Express and UD News, are 34 and 46 years old, respectively. Two brand new newspapers were also launched in Queenstown and King William’s Town since February last year, and they have been well received in those communities. “The Cradock and Middelburg area is the only area in the Eastern Cape where Media24 has not yet published a free local newspaper. The interest we have already received from advertisers is a good indication that there is a great need for such a newspaper for the community, “Ismail said. According to the newspaper’s editor, Bettie Giliomee, Mid-Karoo Express will not only be a source of local news for the community, but will also bring good-quality reading material free to people who are not always able to pay for reading material. The Mid-Karoo Express editorial content will include school, municipal, entertainment, sport and motoring news. There will also be a focus on agricultural research, as well as profile stories about local people. The content will be written in Afrikaans and English. The distribution figures of EP Media’s local newspapers are verified by the reputed, inde-

pendent Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABCs). ) For editorial inquiries call Bettie Giliomee on 041 503 6057 or email elizabethg@me-

IRONMAN 4 the Kidz makes a difference in 2017 REPORTER OVER the past 13 years, IRONMAN 4 the Kidz has been a consistent contributor to children’s charities in South Africa. Through the dedication of athletes participating in the world’s most challenging multisport endurance events, the generosity of sponsors and the support of South African and international residents, the charity reached its 2017 goal of R2.1 million and continues to make a difference for those in need. The IRONMAN 4 the Kidz Charity currently supports 20 children’s establishments and funds around the country. Over and above the regular requests for assistance in the areas of running costs, medical and nutritional needs, some of the key projects earmarked for the beneficiaries this year include: ) Maintenance to vehicles at EP Child and Youth Care Centre ) Purchase of a new school bus at Khayalethu

Youth Centre ) Security enhancements and homework rooms at M.T.R Smit Children’s Haven ) Therapy equipment at Sabrina Love Foundation ) Nutrition, care and daily running costs at Lelethu Baby Shelter. There were 175 athletes who raced in Team Orange for the IRONMAN 4 the Kidz in 2017, as well as the business community and public who supported the charity. Adding the R2.1 million raised this year, brings the total amount raised and distributed in the 13 years of the event to R15 million. “The 2018 IRONMAN season is going to be one of the most exciting with the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships being hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay in September,” Garth Wright, one of the IRONMAN4 the Kidz founders, said. “The IRONMAN 4 the Kidz charity is hoping to benefit from the championship event and achieve a record collection of funds for the kids they assist.” For more info go to www.ironman4thekidz.co.za.

The founders of the fund, Garth Wright and Gary Stephenson, presented the cheque to one of the original beneficiaries, The Eastern Province Child and Youth Care Centre, on September 4. Thousands benefiting from driver training programme REPORTER THE Coega Development Corporation (CDC) driver training programme has expanded its wings to the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth, specifically the TVET College Dower Campus. CDC’s chief financial officer, Lionel Billings, highlighted the importance of acquiring a skill such as driving. “A driver’s licence improves one’s employability levels,” he said. Since the start of the programme in 2012, the

CDC has set the trend by affording previously disadvantaged youth between the ages of 18 and 35 the opportunity to obtain a driver’s licence for free. As a result of the organisation’s incredible success in the programme, it has subsequently led to a record number of more than 3 760 youth throughout the country obtaining their driver’s licenses. “Our success has led to institutions of higher learning like the TVET PE College Dower Campus seeking our assistance in implementing the programme on their behalf,” concluded Billings.

MARKTFEES is a unique handcrafted gift market in Port Elizabeth. A well-known platform for exceptional, quality, handmade and crafted products that are not readily available in the marketplace.

100km cycle race raises funds for Aurora Centre THANDI SETOKOE AS a means of raising much-needed funds for the Aurora Special Care Centre, a local centre that caters for profoundly mentally and physically disabled children and adults, a total of 20 cyclists from Port Elizabeth will be partaking in the 100km Karoo to Coast MTB Race on September 24.

Some of the ‘team Aurora’ cyclists to take on the Karoo to Coast 100km MTB Challenge on September 24. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

The idea was initiated by cyclists Barry Allen and Niel van Vuuren. This after Allen, father to a fiveyear-old disabled daughter attending day school at Aurora, realised that the centre was in great need of financial assistance. “Together with Niel, we decided to approach some of our friends and challenged them to sign up for the

100km cycle race and at the same time raise funds through selling raffle tickets also in aid of the centre,” Allen said. Aurora is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that does not receive a government subsidy. As a result, the majority of the children cannot afford to pay their full fees, while some cannot even afford to pay anything at all. With the hope of raising R100 000, the cyclists have also been selling raffle tickets with prizes up for grabs which include weekend getaways, as well as vouchers from cycle stores. “Sumatran Coffee has also partnered up to develop a special Aurora filter coffee blend, where a percentage of all the sales will be donated to Aurora.” Training sessions in preparation

for the race have varied among the group of cyclists. “The more serious riders have been training several times a week, while the social riders are planning on winging it for a cause,” cyclist Matt Allen explained. “It is always good and humbling to be able to support such good causes. “We have specifically chosen a large race so that we can meet people and network with them as a means of raising awareness for the local charity,” he said. He added that the cyclists will also get the opportunity of enjoying the water points while taking pictures of the scenery. The raffle draw is set to take place on September 22 at the Aurora Centre.

‘March to a Million’ with the Santa Shoebox Project ONE of South Africa’s best-loved charities, the Santa Shoebox Project, is currently in its 11th year and busy shaking things up. Having exceeded 650 000 shoeboxes last year, the project is marching to reach 1 million underprivileged children by 2019. The excitement will build until the millionth pledge is made for the millionth child, and the millionth shoebox is delivered by a donor to one of the more than 50 drop-off points around South Africa and Namibia. “To have the magic million in sight is truly awe-inspiring,” said chief executive officer and founder of the project, Irené Pieters. “When we collected 160 shoeboxes in a friend’s garage back in 2006, not in our wildest dreams did we envisage ‘Marching to a Million’. “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our stakeholders over the last 10 years for supporting us in so many very generous ways. We literally could not have achieved this without you!” For the first time in five years, the number of recipients in Port Elizabeth has increased as well from 2 200 to 3 000. For the past four years, Westering High School has been one of the Santa Shoebox Project’s most loyal donors. “This year there is a bit of friendly

Santa Shoebox Project recipients jump for joy. interschool competition going on as Alexander Road High School has decided to also become part of the Santa Shoebox family. “This will most definitely assist with our growth in the number of children receiving Santa Shoeboxes,” said Michelle Pagel, Santa Shoebox Project Port Elizabeth coordinator. Donors can choose the child or children to whom they wish to gift a shoebox. A “where to, how to” event will take place in the food court of Baywest Mall on September 30. “We invite all mommies and daddies shopping to please bring their children

to our Santa Shoebox info desk and let their little ones (and not so little ones) come and learn how to decorate a Santa Shoebox and hopefully become part of the Santa Shoebox family too,” Pagel said. Baywest Mall will also act as drop-off point for the project on October 27 and 28 from 9am to 5pm. Donors will turn in the wrapped and packed shoebox. Each box must contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, facecloth, soap, toy, outfit of clothing, school supplies and sweets. ADVERTORIAL: THE CO-OP MICA

Gardening made easy this year with the right tools SPRING is officially upon us, bringing with it new hope and life to restore those neglected gardens back to their former glory. South Africa boasts some of the most beautiful flowers in the world, such as pincushion proteas, red hot pokers, vygies, strelizias, and clivias. Soon enough, the last of winter’s icy fingers will give way to the warmer weather of summer, making now the perfect time to start thinking about what you want to put in your new garden. Keeping a finger on it takes time and constant work. Whether you are a professional landscaper, an avid gardener or someone who views gardening as nothing more than a time-consuming chore, you will need the necessary tools to get the job

done and who better to see to all your gardening needs than the Co-op Mica.. They stock everything you could possibly need, from compost and insecticides to gardening gloves and seeds. They also stock the necessary tools, including Lasher handheld garden forks, shears, rakes, loppers, garden spades, rain gauges and three-piece garden sets. There are a few things to keep in mind when you choose your plants, such as the type of soil you have in your yard, whether you need sun or shade and the continuous drought conditions in South Africa. If the soil in your yard is not that great, mulch should do the trick. It has the added benefit of preventing weeds and keeping moisture in the

soil. A good idea would be to get a water tank for the garden. To beat the consistent drought that as yet shows no sign of letting up, simply choose a few hardy summer annuals that can withstand the heat. Some plants require very little maintenance on your part. These include African daisies, fanflowers, summer snapdragons, dahlias, cosmos, vincas, petunias, marigolds and, of course, the ever-popular sunflowers. Unfortunately, whether you have a prize-winning spread of flowers and trees, a simple vegetable patch or practically no garden to speak of, everyone has one persistent problem in common: weeds. Weeding your beddings weekly is the best way

to go. This is the part that needs constant supervision. If it gets out of hand, it can kill your plants by simply growing over them or stealing their water until they starve. For some folks the closest they ever get to a garden is when the weeds pop up or the leaves from their neighbours’ trees land in their yard. So, make a stop at the Co-op Mica to get your trusty Lasher rake, garden fork and spade and get to work. The more you keep your finger on your garden, the less you have to do to keep it in pristine condition. For more info or advice on your gardening wants or needs visit The Co-op Mica, located in the Willow Road Shopping Centre on the corner of Circular Drive and Willow Road or contact the sales team on 041 007 0580.

CANSA hosts colouring competition ANIKA DE BEER IN a bid to raise awareness among young children about healthy living to reduce the risk of getting cancer, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is hosting a colouring competition for primary school learners. As one of the leading cancer control organisations in Southern Africa, CANSA funds cancer research, influences policymakers and educates the public on the prevention and detection of cancer. According to Marius de Vries, CANSA community mobiliser fund development, CANSA is no longer focussed

on only finding a cure for cancer. “Instead, we are more concerned about risk reduction; preventing cancer rather than curing it by teaching the leaders of tomorrow, the children, about things like being sun-smart and eating healthily.” Sponsored by Bidvest Waltons Port Elizabeth, CANSA has come up with a new way to spread their awareness campaign through the colouring competition. Thus far, a total of 86 primary schools are expected to participate in the colouring competition. It is open to learners from any primary school in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.

The competition consists of three categories: category A for Grades 1 to 3, category B for Grades 4 and 5 and category C for Grades 6 and 7. There are three prizes to be won in each category, namely a winner, a first runner-up and a second runner-up. The school with the most entries will also win a prize. Participants may use any colouring material they wish and the judges’ decisions are final. Entries are R10 each. Entry forms are available from the CANSA office in Glendinningvale. The competition will run until September 29 and a prize-giving will take place on October 5. For more info contact the CANSA office on 041 373 5152

Cape Recife Festival boasts big names

Valley Vibes festival back for third time REPORTER AFTER exploding onto the scene in September last year, Port Elizabeth is about to experience one of the Bay’s fastest growing music festivals, Valley Vibes, for the third time.

REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay residents are in for a treat with the upcoming inaugural Cape Recife Music Festival which will feature an all-star line-up. The festival, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), forms part of the annual gathering of South Africa’s singlefin longboard surfers at the Cobbles Classic. Top artists such as Matthew Mole, Desmond and the Tutus, Farryl Purkiss, Charlie Finch, Too Many Chiefs, ZA’frotronixx and The Brothers, will be performing live at the festival which will take place within the pristine Cape Recife Nature Reserve.

“The Cape Recife Music Festival has been introduced as part of the natural growth of the Cobbles Classic and promises to be a fun-filled day for the whole family,” said event organiser Danie Brink. Brink said festivalgoers can look forward to a wide variety of gourmet food from various food trucks. According to him, the idea for the festival had grown out of the success of the Cobbles Classic, which celebrates ’60s style single-fin longboard surfing and the laid-back lifestyle that went with it. The Cape Recife Music Festival will take place on Saturday between 12 noon and 8pm. Tickets at R125 per adult and R30 for children under 12 are available through quicket.co.za.

Valley Vibes will open its gates again on September 30 at its home ground of Settlers Park. Vibers, as festival-goers have come to be known, can make their way down to the park anytime between 12 noon and 10:30pm. With two stage areas in play, Vibers will once again be able to enjoy being able to choose between an electronic or live act stage. Headlining acts include Cape Town’s Ben Dey and the Concrete Lions, as well as POPARTLIVE, which is easily one of South Africa’s best live acts at the moment. A “Dress for the Fest” competition, numerous local and national performing acts, a food village for the hungry, craft beer bars, a gin bar and cocktail bar for the thirsty, live art and a play area for kids will form part of the fun. Tickets ranging from R120 to R150 per person can be purchased from IntenseEvents.nutickets.co.za. Children under 12 enter free.

The Little Theatre in Belmont Terrace, Port Elizabeth, opvoer. As ’n man hom nie by sy huweliksbeloftes kan hou nie, gaan dinge vir seker skeefloop. Dié skerp drama vertel van Gilbert Bodley, ’n getroude man,

Kaartjies kos R80 en is by Westway Kafee beskikbaar by 041 365 0217 of www.westway.co.za of kan by die deure gekoop word. Die vertoning begin saans om 7:30. Die rolverdeling sluit in: Kalinka Venter, Riël Marais, Lourenco Jansen van Rensburg, Alicia Botha, Siobhan Hibberd, Henrico Jordaan, Cobus Lombard, Emercia de Lange, Chris-Mari Vosloo, Mark Farrow en Yolande Farrow. < Mark Farrow en Yolande Farrow is te sien in Flikflooie, wat vanaf 26 tot 30 September in The Little Theatre in Belmont Terrace opgevoer word.

Duck Chowles to pay tribute to Bob Dylan REPORTER FANS of Bob Dylan are in for a rare treat as Eastern Cape-born rock-and-roll showman, Duck Chowles, prepares to front the Centrestage Band to pay tribute to the greatest singer-songwriting poet of his generation, Bob Dylan. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan will be staged for three nights at Old Grey from September 26 to 28. Chowles is a co-owner of the acclaimed national Barnyard Theatre franchise and is well known for his performances as Mick Jagger in his tribute to the Rolling Stones. Chowles called up long-time associate and fellow Bob Dylan fan, Gary Hemmings of Centrestage, and discussed the possibility of

putting a band together to cover the hits from the incredible Dylan songbook. “Bob Dylan has been my single greatest musical hero since I was 18 years old,” said Hemmings. “I have enormous respect for Duck’s uncanny ability to perfectly mimic artists down to the tiniest idiosyncrasy, but it was Duck’s unbridled passion for Dylan which immediately sold the idea. “Duck brings a deep sense of understanding of the role Dylan played in shaping musical culture to his performance, along with an ability to copy Dylan’s distinctive vocal stylings associated with different eras of his career to perfection.” He put together a band of like-minded musicians and made the ideal choice of Alan Kozak to act as guitarist and musical direct-

or. He is joined by Joe Van Der Linden on guitar, Claire Venn on vocals, Boet Strydom on keyboards, Andrew Warneke on bass and Kevin Mattheus on drums. Some of the Dylan’s songs featured in the show include I Shall Be Released, Knocking On Heavens Door, Like a Rolling Stone, Tangled Up In Blue and To Make You Feel My Love. The performances from September 26 to 28 at Old Grey will begin at 7:30pm. Tickets at R160 each and R140 if eight or more are purchased, are available from Computicket or Wendy on 082 661 6921. ; Duck Chowles, joined by members of the Centrestage band, will pay tribute to Bob Dylan from September 26 to 28. Our side managed to lead the league race for a long time. We lost the games that we were supposed to have killed. Nevertheless, our side worked very hard throughout the

season, but the game of football is full of surprises. All I want to say is that the previous games had a telling effect on my players.” Rangers’ team manager, Siyabulela Bayeni, informed PE Express that there was a good rapport between the team and their club’s management team. He stated that their management supported them throughout the season. Bayeni explained, “I cannot complain because there was a mutual understanding between the team and our management. Our management team motivated and encouraged our team. When the team lost some games, they lifted our team’s spirit. Councillor Sindiswa Mthimkhulu played an important role because she bought tracksuits for our team. I want to thank everybody who supported us during the previous season.”

MOTHERWELL roller skater Odwa Ngetu represented South Africa in the 2017 World Roller Games artistic skating competition that took place in Nanjing, China, from August 31 to September 6. According to Ngetu, he was the only roller skater to represent the Eastern Cape Province in the national junior men’s team. He stated there were 18 countries that took part in the artistic world competition. Ngetu said Kenya was the second African country to participate, joining SA in the tournament. Ngetu said, “The competition was very tight and it was not easy. “Our team competed their hearts out. We did not win any medals, but I have no regrets because our team had learned a lot from the other countries.

“Our coach, Wendy Gila, prepared the team, but other countries managed to collect silverware. We took part in an artistic competition in which we imitated ducks. It was a wonderful experience for us to compete against the world’s greatest teams.” Ngetu highlighted that he worked very hard during the trials that took place in Hammanskraal in Pretoria. He commended Roller Skate South Africa head coach Wendy Gila for treating the team like her own children. “Wendy motivated us and she is like our mother. She has a special way of boosting the confidence of the team. “Motherwell Rollers president Marianne Terblanche is also worth mentioning. Marianne supported me through thick and thin. She also showed parental support to me. I want to thank Wendy and Marianne for having confidence in me.”

Seven Sundowns teams overcome Lion City SELBY MADIKANE HUNDREDS of children braved the chilly weather conditions on Sunday when Seven Sundowns Sports Club’s u/11 and u/13 soccer teams took on Lion City FC at the Motherwell NU 8 Community Grounds. Seven Sundowns, affectionately known as AmaQhawe, showed that they were not scared of the high-riding Lion City. Sundowns’ u/11 team took the

game to City, who had to defend for almost the entire game. The two sides went to the half-time sharing a goalless draw. In the second half, Lion City scored their opening goal. AmaQhawe seemed as if they pressed the wrong button as they took the game to City. The supporters of Sundowns saw their striker, Nikilitha Gxotiwe, score their opening goal to make matters level at 1-1. Sundowns’ opening goal lifted the spirits of the players while their

winger, Aqhamile Aqha Mpendu, banged in their winning goal. In the u/13 category the competition was very tight as both sides played soccer of high standard. City scored first after a goal mouth scramble late in the second half. Sundowns cancelled City’s lead, following a well-taken equalising goal by Malihlome Mpendu. The game had to be decided on penalties with AmaQhawe winning 5-4. Sundowns’ head coach, Mthunzi Zane Mrwebi, lauded his side. Mrwebi said, “My teams played according to the game plan. They were disciplined, determined and dedicated. Our aim is to make sure that our youth in Motherwell NU 7 take part in sport. “Since we established this sports club last year, the level of crime has dropped quite immensely in Motherwell NU 7. I want to thank the parents for supporting our sports club.” < Seven Sundowns Sports Club’s u/13 soccer team. PHOTO:SELBY MADIKANE

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Singapore GP: Ferrari pain, Hamilton gain IN 2008 Singapore became part of Formula 1 as the first night race on the calendar. Fast forward a decade and delivered another first by becoming F1’s first-ever night race in the rain. As uncertainty ran rampant, the rain wasn’t enough to induce a safety-car start. Sebastian Vettel, after producing a scintillating lap on Saturday, lined up in pole position with Max Verstappen alongside. The Singapore Grand Prix should’ve been one where Ferrari could inflict serious damage, in terms of points, on Mercedes given that Hamilton and Bottas were fifth and sixth respectively. But yet again Formula 1 has proved itself to be the most unpredictable sport in the world. Both the front-row starters, Vettel and Verstappen, were solid if unspectacular off the start-line. In contrast, the fourth-place starting Raikkonen hooked up his start perfectly and rocketed to the front. However, Vettel, in trying to cover his position swept across the track to block Verstappen not realising that Raikkonen was on the other side of the Dutchman. It resulted in an enormous crash which

brought an end to all three’s prospects and collected Fernando Alonso for good measure. After the fact the crash was deemed a racing incident, and rightly so. While many would cast Vettel as the villain for cutting across the circuit, this reasoning would be tenuous, at best. Firstly, Vettel wouldn’t have known that Raikkonen had made an amazing start and was on the other side of Verstappen. Some would argue too that Vettel shouldn’t have cut across the circuit in the manner that he did but consider the fact that any driver, in any conditions, in any race, would have done the same. In fact, cast your mind back two weeks to Hamilton cutting across the track in Italy, in exactly the same manner, to cover the Williams of Lance Stroll. Whatever your opinion on the incident, the one thing everyone would agree on is that it was a disastrous day for Vettel and Ferrari. Where he was expected to take back the lead in the driver’s standings, Vettel leaves Singapore significantly on the back foot. Because

through all the chaos Lewis Hamilton emerged in P1 and was never troubled on his way to the chequered flag. The expectation that Daniel Ricciardo could take the fight to the Merc was nipped in the bud early on as the Aussie had to manage an oil leak from as early as lap 15. Valtteri Bottas may have finished an uninspiring third but with it has ensured a more than 100-point lead for Mercedes in the constructor’s standings. In fourth, Carlos Sainz delivered the drive of the day while Sergio Perez in the Force India snapped up fifth place. In sixth, and scoring his first points of the season, was Renault’s Jolyon Palmer who is to be replaced by Sainz in 2018. Stoffel Vandoorne was able to translate his good form to a seventh place finish for McLaren while Lance Stroll, Romain Grosjean, and Esteban Ocon rounded out the top ten. As Ferrari rue what might have been Hamilton’s victory, has gained him a 28-point lead in the driver’s standings with six races remaining. On such things do world championships turn.

Students to host soccer day for furry friends NINTAI Communications, a fictitious public relations company consisting of five first-year public relations students from Nelson Mandela University (NMU), will host a sevena-side fun family soccer day to raise funds for the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) Port Elizabeth on Saturday. “We encourage businesses, schools, churches and community members to join our soccer day. The aim of the day is to have fun while raising funds,” said Cayla Stuthard,

director of Nintai Communications. “We ask and encourage everyone to enter teams or donate food, blankets or bowls to our event. “Every single bit will help make a difference to our furry friends at AWS,” said Stuthard. There will be a jumping castle for the children, a prize-giving and lucky draws to add some more fun to the family fun day. AWS volunteers will also be walking some

Early upsets make for great start to PELFA knockout cup FRANCOIS ROTHNER THE preliminary and quarter-final knockout cup games in the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) Old Buck Legends League saw quite a few upsets. PE City, who ended third last in the league, dispatched league champions, Kuyga Masters, 1-0. Hearts’ game against Mahle Old Grey went to penalties with Old Grey taking it 3-2 in the end. In the quarter-finals, Mahle Old Grey made sure they got the better of the giant killers, PE City, winning 3-2. The goal scorers for Mahle Old Grey were Richard Clarke in the eighth minute, Jason Aitken in the 18th and Maraks in the 28th minute of the game. Priory, who ended second last on the log and conceded 81 goals during the league contest, sprang a surprise 3-1 win over

Shamrocks. Dustin Stokes helped himself to a brace and Clayton Ensal scored Priory’s third goal. The ever-consistent Kumarin “Bubble” Naidoo pulled one back for Shamrocks in the middle of the second half. African Leopards enjoyed the Victoria Park Sports Club turf with a close 1-0 win over NMBM. They went to the half-time break with a score of 0-0. Luthando Yibe scored Leopards’ winning goal two minutes into the second half. Callies fought hard to eventually overcome a tenacious Westpark by a single goal. Lukhanyo “Jomo” Dlula scored for Callies from the penalty mark 20 minutes into the first half.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 2017

Fever running high for Fish Challenge end of October THE inaugural Ford Eastern Cape Motors Bottom Fish Challenge will take place between October 27 and 29 this year and will be organised and hosted by the Port Elizabeth Deep Sea Angling Club (Pedsac). A need was identified to cater for the small deep sea ski-boat owner and bottom fish anglers who usually do not participate in the annual Tuna Classic off-shore event. “With R150 000 up for grabs in total prize money, fish fever is running high among local recreational anglers and the tournament organisers expect more than 80 boats, jet-skis and fishing skis, and in excess of 280 anglers will take to the sea during the tournament,” said Richard Do-

naldson of Pedsac. Pedsac will be the main tournament and weigh-in venue, while Noordhoek is a designated secondary launch site during the tournament. “As part of our drive to fish for a sustainable future, Pedsac and the tournament organisers decided to make four of the critically endangered red data species mandatory measure and release, and escalating this to all species being measured and released by the third year of this annual event,” Donaldson said. Scientists from Rhodes University’s Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science has thrown their weight behind this tournament

and will assist with implementing the measure and release policies over the next three years. The scientists will use this tournament to gather catch data and assist with educating all anglers on best practice for sustainable recreational fishing. Entry forms are available from Pedsac on www.pedsac.co.za or can be collected from the club house between 11am and 7pm daily. Ford and Eastern Cape Motors, together with the PE Deep Sea Angling Club, has identified the Aurora Special Care Centre to be beneficiaries of the tournament charity drive. “Funds will be raised to help improve the lives of approximately 120 children and adults
