D
ESPITE the decrease in gang murders in Nelson Mandela Bay, the spate of gang violence is still totally unacceptable, according to the NMB municipality member of
the mayoral committee for Safety and Security, Councillor John Best. This after the recent release of the 2016/2017 annual crime statistics which showed a decrease in gang murders in the metro.
“The metro police have established a solid working relationship with the South African Police Service (SAPS), in support of clamping down on violent crime and gangsterism, but more still needs to be done,” Best said. He added that weekly meetings
with the SAPS were being held to determine the alterations in terms of the progress plan that was submitted. “One of the focus areas is naturally gang violence and we have deployed our staff in the two areas concerned, namely Bethelsdorp and Gelvandale
and they have been on their feet patrolling these areas. “So, I do believe that this has had a positive influence.” Continued on page 2

Dit is iets wat jou lewe heeltemal verander. Aan die begin lyk die paadjie baie donker.” Hy sê toe Deané by hom kom, moes hy eers die oorsaak van die gehoorverlies bepaal. “Die bevestigingstoets is reeds afgehandel. Ons moes toe medies en radiologies vasstel of sy ’n kandidaat was vir kogleêre inplanting.”

Ons kon sien dat die senuwee op die elektriese stimulasie van die elektrode reageer. “Ons neem afmetings van hoeveel
stimulasie nodig is en dit word gebruik deur die oudioloog om kalibrasie (mapping) uit te voer wanneer sy ‘aangeskakel’ word oor ’n paar weke. “Ons gee dan stelselmatig meer en meer stimulasie sodat sy gewoond raak aan klank. Dit word oor die volgende paar weke verhoog tot die punt dat sy baie naby aan normaal kan hoor.” Butler voeg by dat die ouers se harde werk daarna begin. Die egpaar het besluit op spraakterapie vir Deané. “Maar voordat sy praat, moet sy eers leer om te luister,” voeg Barnard by. Coega‘s business successes BAIC SA hands wheelchairs to in spotlight at awards gala REPORTER THE Coega Development Corporation (CDC) took top honours at the prestigious Black Business Quarterly (BBQ) Awards when they won the Kaya FM best transformation award. The awards, which took place on October 20 at the Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg, saw the CDC nominated for two categories, namely the Kaya FM best transformation award and the Top Watch best employer of the year award. “Having been nominated for two categories is an achievement we are certainly proud of as the CDC. “Walking away as a winner in one of the categories is the cherry on top and a validation of the hard work that everyone within the CDC puts in,” said Ayanda Vilakazi, unit head of marketing, brand and corporate communications.
The BBQ Awards are South Africa’s most prestigious and longest-running black business awards ceremony and has celebrated and recognised champions of transformation for the past 15 years. In the Kaya FM best transformation award category the CDC faced stiff competition including the likes of PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Inqaba Yokulinda Youth Organisation (IYYO). In the Top Watch best employer of the year award category the CDC was up against Buna Projects and Consulting and TWF Corporate Travel. The BBQ award followed hot on the heels of the CDC’s recent certification as the Top Employer 2018 for Excellence in Employer Conditions for the third year running. The CDC certification in those awards was based on a comprehensive analysis of the human resources environment.

residents with limited mobility REPORTER BAIC South Africa recently held a handover ceremony at Emmanuel Haven in Motherwell where they delivered 50 wheelchairs to two community-based organisations and 40 to individuals with limited mobility in Motherwell, Wells Estate and Kamvelihle. The donation formed part of the vehicle manufacturer’s CSI programmes for communities in close vicinity to the new BAIC plant in the Coega IDZ. “We as BAIC consider CSI very important and this is the first of a series of initiatives that seek to empower the people of Nelson Mandela Bay,” chief financial officer of BAIC South Africa Batandwa Mdyesha said. He explained that mobility impairment became especially challenging when community care organisations and individuals with mobility impairments had limited resources to obtain mobility aids such as wheelchairs, crutches, or walkers. “It was important for us to critically examine what mobility and movement meant at grassroots level in communities during this year’s October Transport Month theme, Together we move South Africa forward. “In order for us to move our community forward, we saw a close connection between the theme of Transport Month and the needs of community members in Motherwell follow-
ing extensive research, outreaches and consultations to identify human mobility needs.” Through input from the nine Motherwell ward councillors, dialogue with community leaders and the inputs of several non-profit organisations, BAIC SA’s community relations team were able to identify beneficiaries for the wheelchair donations over a three-week period. “This has been very kind support. I could not walk around in the old age home and I am very happy to receive this kind of aid from BAIC. This is a very comfortable chair,” Ester Zweni from Ethembeni Old Age Home said. For Eunice Adams, the wheelchair now meant mobility for her mother. “My mother likes to cook and after she lost her ability to walk she stopped cooking. This means a lot to her as she can now cook for us like the old times. We are so grateful to BAIC,” she said. Sharing the same sentiments, Thandeka Bam, an NU7 resident in Motherwell said, “I am very thankful. The wheelchair I had was not in a good condition. I had been using the chair for over 10 years since I suffered a stroke in 2003 and could not afford a replacement.” Mdyesha said it was important for BAIC SA to understand the challenges of communities living in close proximity to its plant in the Coega IDZ.

Cotswold Primary tops in recycling ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL THEIR school is small in comparison to others in the metro, yet their passion towards recycling is enormous. Marina Sea Salt recently introduced the Shine Your Light Reusing/Recycling awareness campaign to nine schools in the metro. The campaign was supported by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s War on Waste programme. “Marina Sea Salt decided to launch a reward programme for collecting empty Lighthouse Flasks. We offered to buy back all the flasks collected from the nine schools and to show our commitment to no wasting - but rather reusing and recycling,” explained Bennie Becker, marketing director of Marina Sea Salt. “The message that we started to broadcast was, ‘if the environment wins, everybody wins’ and we wanted to reward not only the winning school but also each learner who collects the most flasks with a bike.
“The entire winning class would receive a R50 KFC food voucher each.” After four months, Cotswold Primary – which has only 528 learners – collected the most flasks and walked away with R5 000 for the winning school plus R2 each for the 390 empty Lighthouse flasks they’ve collected, thus R5 780 in total. Executive Mayor and MMC of Public Health Athol Trollip attended the prizegiving ceremony and congratulated the school on their achievement. “The fact that you’re not the biggest school that participated and that you won this award means that you all worked as a team,” Trollip said. “You are all the most amazing group of young children because you participated in this programme and because you are passionate about our environment. You should be proud of the fact that you collected the most number of bottles and that you are part of a campaign to help us in this war against waste,” Trollip said. Cotswold Primary principal Barbara Porter said the reason they did so well
in the competition was that they were blessed with very dedicated parents, guardians, teachers and learners. “Recycling has always been very close to our hearts at Cotswold Primary. We have a paper recycling project and that money will be used to help improve our children’s playground. We have been promoting the recycling of water due to the terrible drought we find ourselves in. “Our children have also been encouraged to bring their bath water in an attempt to keep the grass growing on the school fields. The learners have brought twelve thousand litres of water so far this year. I am very proud of them,” Porter said. The Grade 1M class walked away with the prize for the class that collected the most bottles. The learner who collected the most flasks was Matthew Hartlief (6) who was ecstatic about the bicycle he received for his achievement. The school’s prize money of R5 780 will go towards paving around the school.

School principal inspires learners to be bookwise THANDI SETOKOE DETERMINED to see the children at her school succeed, Motherwell’s Elufefeni Primary School principal, Amanda Ntsumpa, has dedicated herself to establishing a culture of reading among the pupils. This happens through a reading committee which she spearheads at the school to ensure that every learner has dedicated time to read during school hours. The reading club session at the school has over 100 learners and takes place on a weekly basis. “This is my small contribution in serving the nation by serving my community through a commitment to promoting literacy. I am dedicated to lead by example and my own passion for reading keeps me going,� she said. To honour Ntsumpa’s literacy activism, and as part of International School Library Month, Nal’ibali, the national reading for enjoyment campaign, presented the principal with a custom-made hanging library stocked with books in isiXhosa and English as means of applauding her for a job well done. “Having access to leisure books and stories at an early age is essential for children. “It provides them with the language foundation they need to do well in the classroom,

Nal’ibali advocates for reading for enjoyment in home languages and English, noting that children who are exposed to good-quality stories in languages they understand, are motivated to learn to read and write. The campaign is recognising the efforts of the teachers and school librarians across the country who are going above and beyond to encourage their learners to read. The work that Ntsumpa has done to improve literacy has had a noticeable impact on the learners. “Being encouraged to read for enjoyment at school helps us to become knowledgeable and be informed. Knowledge is power, reading is fun,� Grade 7 learner, Anezwa Mangcasana said. “Parents are invited to attend events at the school that promote literacy, which is presented to inspire parents to reinforce reading at home,� Ntsumpa said.

Big Walk for Cancer this Saturday REPORTER PORT Elizabeth-based radio station Algoa FM will host its annual Big Walk for Cancer under the theme Walk as 1 as captured in the slogan; â&#x20AC;&#x153;we walk for family, we walk for fun, we walk as 1â&#x20AC;? this Saturday. The 5km walk will start at 8am from the Lighthouses at the Boardwalk and end on the Festival Lawns at the Boardwalk. Academy hosts ‘Elements of Dance’ production REPORTER PORT ELIZABETH dance enthusiasts can expect to be captivated and entertained on Friday and Saturday at the Opera House, as the Ellen Bunting Dance Academy takes the audience on a nostalgic and entertaining journey that literally celebrates the various ‘elements’ of dance – ballet, tap, modern, jazz and hiphop. Director and producer Simone Buchner has incorporated a wide range of dancing disci-
plines into Elements of Dance, ranging from modern and tap all the way through to lyrical and Broadway jazz. Dancing to a strong piece of music, Ariana Patsalos, the Port Elizabeth Dance Festival (PEDF) Senior Tap Championship winner of 2016, will once again wow audiences with one of her championship solos - You Can’t Touch This, an upbeat and funky tap dance with fast, intricate footwork. Together with Buchner, other talented and award-winning dancers will grace the stage with numbers such as Hippy Babes, Jailhouse
Rock and On Broadway to Uptown Girls and I Won’t Dance. There are three sets of mom and daughters in the show, as well as a mom and son. Kim Scribante and her daughter Sienna will be performing a tap duet together to Meghan Trainors’ Mom. This number was choreographed by Kim and is a portrayal of the beautiful bond shared between a mother and daughter. “The music for the show has a variety of pieces Jailhouse Rock for example, which is a junior modern number, has dancers wearing pris-
oner outfits with a little something extra that makes the number such fun! “My favourite costume in the show is the costume worn by my junior tappers in On Broadway,” Buchner said. The local production features a kaleidoscope of numbers, from tap-dancing children to Broadway jazz and even a Greek inspired twist to a tap number. The show will start at 7:30pm on Friday and at 2:30pm on Saturday. Tickets for the 90-minute show are available at Computicket at R120 per person.

The Colchester Development Run is proudly presented by Eastern Province Athletics in partnership with NMB Municipality and their Legacy Project. Race organiser, Michael Mbambani, confirmed that all 5km finishers will receive a medal. Gold medals will be awarded to the first five men and women as well as the category winners. Silver medals will be awarded to the next

Our homes and communities produce waste which can be recycled.” The initiative only provides these items in exchange for recyclable material and not money. Rangers break Tigers in Mayoral Cup SELBY MADIKANE CITY Rangers FC came from behind to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory from gutsy Young Tigers FC during their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Mayoral Cup clash that took place at the Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Sunday. Tigers made things difficult for Rangers in their counterparts’ first third. Lucky Teyise was rewarded with a world-class goal in the 27th minute, while Sinethemba Zephe and Zolani Bodo kept on tormenting Rangers’ defence. However, Rangers clawed back into the game when Siyabonga Dayile came up with his side’s opening goal in the 38th minute. The two sides went to the half-time break sharing a 1-1 draw. In the second half, Tigers made their intention to win clear, but Rangers sucked the opposition into their territory, looking to catch them on the counter-attack. Rangers won the game 2-1 after Sinoxolo Kalipa scored the winning goal in the 47th minute. Skipper Sibusiso Dolosi and his defence made sure that they maintained their lead until the fat lady sang. The defenders of the Mbumba side made sure that they kept things very tight at the back with Tigers being tightly marked. City Rangers’ skipper, Sibusiso Dolosi, is followed by Zolani Bodo.

The finals were exciting when home supporters rallied behind Real Madrid when they locked horns with Stinging Bees. Madrid defeated Bees 2-0 in the finals to win the tournament. In the seniors’ semi-finals, City Pirates eliminated Sundowns 2-0, while Marikana also beat Thembela FC 2-0 in their semi-final match. In the finals, Tomorrow Stars demolished Marikana 3-0 and in the masters’ finals, Eleven Attackers drubbed SUBS 3-0. The winners received trophies, cash prizes and gold medals. Dano hailed all the teams that participated in the tournament, as well as the parents for allowing their children to participate. He said, “I am overwhelmed that the tournament was a success. The teams played football of high levels.”

Verstappen dominates tense Mexican GP FORMULA 1 is a sport where just about everything is engineered and managed to the most minute of details. However, despite the near obsessive level of attention to detail the volatility of the human factor often still has the biggest impact. In Mexico, Max Verstappen made his presence felt as he barged his way into the lead of the race from his front row starting position. Though Verstappen, pole-sitter Vettel, and Hamilton were three abreast into the first turn, it was the Dutchman that barged his way into the lead of the race and not only left Vettel and Hamilton battered and bruised but also at the back of the field. Hamilton was left limping back to the pits with a right-rear puncture while Vettel too was forced into the pitlane for a new frontwing. As Vettel wasn’t running first or second, Hamilton was still on course to take the title. The radio chatter between Hamilton and the Mercedes pitwall clearly revealed that there were more than a few anxious moments in the cockpit of the number 44 Mercedes. Despite several thrilling overtakes, Vettel could ultimately only recover to fourth. Hamilton’s own ninth place finish was enough to crown him the 2017 driver’s champion in what was one of the most intense championship deciders in quite some time. For Verstappen, well ahead in P1, it was a far less stressful afternoon. In fact, such was his pace that the 20-year-old had to be told several times to slow down. Even so, no one had an answer for his pace around the Mexican circuit, which rewarded the aerodynamic efficiency of the Red Bull to a tee. Verstappen’s sterling drive left him nearly 20 seconds clear of the second placed Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen completing the top three. With such a spectacular win, the third of his short career, it’s clear that the future of Formula 1 is in good and very quick hands. Behind Vettel, Esteban Ocon was fifth for Force India with Williams’ rookie Lance Stroll delivering another impressive drive to finish sixth. Local hero Sergio Perez was seventh, while Kevin Magnussen, Hamilton, and Fernando Alonso completed the top 10. It was a difficult day for Renault as both Carlos Sainz and Nick Hulkenberg were forced into retirement alongside Marcus Ericsson, Brendon Hartley and Daniel Ricciardo who suffered a MGU-H failure on the Red Bull. There will be some who say that Hamilton’s 2017 victory in the driver’s championship eventuated only because of Ferrari’s unreliability, but it simply isn’t the whole story. While a driver can only be as good as his car, the Mercedes hasn’t been the quickest car this year on several occasions.
But still, Hamilton’s relentless ability to churn out performances, especially in qualifying, is admirable and is what has won him another world title. Expectedly, questions of whether he can or should be considered one of the greatest drivers of all time will abound. It’s a difficult question to answer given how the sport and its drivers have transformed in its six decades of existence. What is indisputable is the fact that Lewis
Hamilton is easily one of the best drivers of his generation. Hamilton’s championship triumph also means ICQC 2018-20 that he stands alone as the only British driver with four titles.

Pearson tops SA water polo charts REPORTER
Grey High cricketer makes history
PEARSON High School’s water polo teams are making a splash, having participated and excelled in a number of tournaments recently. They hosted the National Coed Water Polo Tournament where they faced some of the best teams in South Africa. A total of 36 teams participated in the tournament, including Pearson’s teams, both of whom made it to the finals. Pearson won the Dee Bowley Trophy in the end. Though the girls came up against five-time tournament winners, Stirling, in the finals and lost, the boys faced and beat Crawford Lonehill from Johannesburg to bring home the trophy. The boys then hosted the annual Stayers’ Tournament where 16 teams from all over South Africa took each other on. Pearson enjoyed great success after beating Grey High 2-1 in the semi-final and finishing in second place after losing to Selborne 3-1 in the final. Pearson’s first girls’ team also participated in the annual Centennial Clarendon Stayers’ Tournament, where the top three teams in South Africa took each other on. Pearson made it to the finals after beating St Stithians from Johannesburg 6-4. There they fought hard against Stirling before Pearson claimed the win with a 10-7 full-time score.

Finally, the first team girls also competed in the St Stithians Water Polo Tournament in Johannesburg. Pearson beat Stirling and Durban Girls’ College in the elimination rounds before coming up against Reddam Constantia in the finals. Pearson won the match 9-8.
Stock car action at Victory this weekend
Winning the two tournaments put Pearson in the top spot in South Africa in school water polo. Coach Luke Manthe said, “Being first in South Africa is a fantastic achievement and the girls have worked extremely hard to achieve it. Success loves hard work!”
The sixth and final round of the regional stock car races will be hosted on Saturday at Victory Raceway in Victoria Drive, Walmer. The competing classes will be the stockrods, 1660s, 2.1 modifieds, heavy metals and American saloons. Entrance fees are R50 per adult and R10 for children under the age of 13. Grey High School’s Nicolas Keevy scored three consecutive centuries at the U/15 Cricket Week which was hosted by Affies in Pretoria recently. He scored his 100s against Kearsney College (104), St Alban’s College (138) and Pretoria Boys’ (108).
