OCA-COLA Beverages Africa (CCBA) unveiled its sparkling new head office based in the Waterfront Business Park in Humerail last week Thursday.

This new establishment of the world’s seventh largest Coca-Cola bottling partner by revenue will house the largest Coca-Cola bottler on the African continent, accounting for around 40% of all Coca-Cola volumes sold in Africa. In a statement, CCBA chief executive,

Doug Jackson, said by building a successful bottler in Africa, the company gained greater shared value for the business and the communities the region served. “We are optimistic about the future growth of our business on the continent and we aspire to be the best Coca-Cola bot-

tler in the world and Africa’s most valuable independent food and beverage company, driven by engaged, motivated and capable employees,” Jackson said.

Residents irate after plants destroyed outside mall NWABISA FUNDE MEMBERS of the community were in uproar after photos that showed pictures of destroyed pot plants in the road near the Baywest shopping mall surfaced on social media last week. Ward 39 councillor Margaret De Andrade was on site at Baywest Boulevard when she noticed what appeared to be an oily substance in the pot plants. “I was shocked when the officials showed me that someone poured oil in our pots on Baywest Boulevard and the plants are dying, said De Andrade.

Residents, who admired these pot plants, exclaimed their concern on the PE Express Facebook page, where the photos were posted. Simon Venter commented on the PE Express post, “There is someone dumping oil in the bushes in Sherwood by Riverstone Road. Disgraceful, [it] must be a home mechanic somewhere around here. Yvette Venter Abraham wondered if it could be “someone who never got the contract and is sour grapes. Who or why else would you destroy an improvement made in our city? Another user, Amanda Turner, said, “This is so un-

necessary, [they are] trying to make PE beautiful and this is the thanks they get. Grow up! Lynne Jenkerson Anderson said she “Admired those pots a few weeks ago when I was in PE. The pots at Baywest Boulevard have since been removed. De Andrade further mentioned that members of the community that damage municipal property will be liable and will be severely fined.

Metro repairs over 5 000 leaks MEMBER of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy in Nelson Mandela Bay, Masixole Zinto, has announced that during the first three months of 2018 the Metro has repaired more than 5 000 water leaks. In a statement Zinto said the city is committed to delivering quality basic services. “It is for this reason the administration has focused on maintaining and repairing aging infrastructure. He said the areas that have been largely impacted by water leaks in the metro were mainly Uitenhage, Despatch, Newton Park, Sydenham, Moth-

erwell and New Brighton. “Our efforts to save water have been supported by both internal plumbing teams and appointed contractors. The vigilance of residents through increased reporting of leaks has resulted in this improvement in turnaround time, Zinto said. He applauded the residents for their efforts in this regard, adding that through water-saving campaigns, the municipality continues to emphasise the need for communities to play their role in using water sparingly and reporting water leaks timeously. All water leaks can be reported to 0800 205 050. – REPORTER

New Coca-Cola bottling headquarters opens in Bay Continued from page 1 The opening of the bottling facility is also said to be part of creating a first-class working environment for the staff, with a design that truly reflects the ambition of CCBA on the African continent. According to a media statement by the company, the new CCBA head office is being rented from the developers, which adds

additional value, with Port Elizabeth being a far more cost-effective place to base a head office versus rental prices in Johannesburg. The new head office was created by developers Jenz Heinberg to meet the growing needs of CCBA and will be home to 102 employees. According to the statement, DHK Interior Design Architects had created a modern and artistically functional building, and local street artist Joff was commissioned for some of the interior artwork. CCBA chairman Phil Gutsche, said Port Elizabeth had played an important role in the history of Coca-Cola in South Africa. “The modernity of the new building reflects the company’s ambitious growth strategy aligned with the Coca-Cola company’s 2020 vision and will be supported through investment in manufacturing, sales, distribution and marketing,” Gutsche said.

PE Cold Storage expands plant at Coega SEZ REPORTER THE Port Elizabeth (PE) Cold Storage plant, one of the very first export-orientated investors to locate their facility at the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ), is once again expanding its facility. The investment, worth R10 million, is the second expansion within a space of two years, following the R100 million investment by the company in 2017. “We doubled our capacity of 7 500 pallets to around 15 000 pallets storage. “The expansion complemented our state of the art modern storage facility and accommodated greater volumes for the increasing citrus production in the Eastern Cape,” said George Efstratiou, PE Cold Storages’ co-director. The current project, set for completion this month, will see the company play a critical role in the refrigeration and short-term storage of citrus products before distribution to markets around the world. The new building will include a new work-

shop and will facilitate the servicing of the company’s forklifts and other vehicles. “We are very excited about the project and the vast opportunities it brings for the company. Currently, we have over 100 people employed at the PE Cold Storage facilities,” added Efstratiou. “As a result of the expansion, we have managed to create an additional five permanent jobs and a further 25 construction jobs.” Highlighting the importance of locating in an enabling environment, Efstratiou said, “the Coega SEZ has been the ideal investment destination for our company. “I would definitely encourage more investors to come and invest at Coega due to the clean and secure environment, as well as the good services and facilities provided, and being situated near the Port of Ngqura.” According to a media statement issued by Coega Development Corporation, these sentiments support the recent independent study conducted on the impact of the Coega in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Eastern Cape.

ADVERTORIAL: WORKING WORLD EXHIBITION

Careers expo set to wow ONE of South Africa’s biggest careers exhibitions, the Working World Exhibition will inspire over 15 000 Grade 12 learners and unemployed youth when it gets underway this week, from today until Friday at the Feather Market Centre. Organised school groups and individual visitors will have the opportunity of speaking to leading employers and educational institutions. These include VW, SANRAL, Coega, Vodacom, Spec-Savers, Woodlands Dairy, PWC, ABSA, Old Mutual, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, Tavcor Motors, the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement, the CSIR, South African Environmental Observation Net-

work, Kingfisher FM and Media24. All of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s directorates will also be part of the exhibition, alongside educational exhibitors, including the Nelson Mandela University, Rhodes University, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Inscape Education Group, Damelin, Varsity College, MSC College, Port Elizabeth TVET College, Newton College, Total Concept Academy, ETA College, Boston City Campus and Business College, Belgium Campus ITversity, Pearson Institute of Higher Education, Mancosa, East Cape Midlands College, The Kimberley Diamond and Jewellery Incubator and Capsicum. For example, more than 80% of the companies that have invested in the Coega SEZ have seen an increase in their profits since starting operations in the zone, which include Coega Dairy and PE Cold Storage, while the benefits are felt throughout the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and the rest of the province, according to an independent research conducted by Muffin Consulting. In addition, 85% of investors have increased their workforce, 62% have expanded their factories, more than 90% described the Coega SEZ and its Logistics Park in Uitenhage as the ideal locations for small and big industries. Private sector investment accounts for approximately 70% of the total investment value at Coega and over 78% of suppliers to the investors are local. “The CDC will continue to be at the forefront of socioeconomic development by creating jobs, providing training and skills development, and supporting small and medium enterprises in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality,” the statement read.

tween 09:00 and 15:00 from today to Friday. He said key attractions of the 19th consecutive edition of the Working World Exhibition included a freshly produced DVD on “Careers of The Future”, sponsored by the Coega Development Corporation, which all organised groups would view. All learners part of organised school groups also received a free career guidance workbook, approved by the Department of Education for use in the Grade 12 Life Orientation syllabus. “Career guidance resources are essential to curb youth unemployment which is a serious concern in South Africa. Career planning is even more critical as the market place is demanding more sophisticated skills that are aligned with the fourth industrial revolution, which we are currently experiencing.” “The expo and its free resources are all about equipping our school-leavers and unemployed youth with insight and opportunity to find meaningful work. Blind learners prepare to launch product range REPORTER THE learners from the Khanyisa School for the Blind in Kwadwesi are preparing to launch a range of aroma sachets and other scented products using fragrant herbs they grow in their food garden. The driving force behind this plan is the school’s deputy head, Alec Stoffels, who originally established the food garden in 2016. “I’ve always been passionate about gardening, even as a child. It flows through my bloodstream,” he said.

“Initially, my aim was to grow enough food in this garden to supplement the produce our kitchen uses for school meals. “Now, my dream is to leave the school a legacy by immersing our learners in the garden and equipping them with the skills to produce their own crops, such as beetroot, spinach, pumpkins, carrots, lettuce, parsley and maize.” However, his plans got off to a slow start when it became clear that the garden’s design made it too difficult for the school’s blind and partially sighted learners to play a full role in making the initia-

tive a success. That is when he found a partner in Shoprite, which agreed to help transform the underused land into a productive, fragrant vegetable and herb garden. The retailer’s support included new tools, plants and educational materials as well as training. The youngsters are in the process of learning permaculture techniques for cultivating vegetables alongside fragrant herbs and plants, such as lavender, geranium and rosemary. “But the thing that really fires their enthusiasm is harvesting the produce they cultivate through their own hard work,” explained Stoffels. “Long term, the kids will always be our first priority,” he emphasised. “The vegetables we grow in the garden will be used to give them a balanced, nutritious diet. Any income we earn from our planned range of aroma sachets and scented products will be used to do more for them in the future.” Meanwhile, Khanyisa School for the Blind is looking forward to showing off its flourishing garden to the public as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations. “I can’t wait for the VIPs and other guests to see what we have achieved with our learners. There is nothing like seeing their joy at harvesting produce they cultivated themselves,” Stoffels concluded.

200th donation of platelets

Former EP rugby player, Orlando Gerber, recently donated platelets for the 200th time. It took Gerber (68), who is the first rugby team manager for Cillié High School, 36 years to reach this milestone. He donates platelets every 30 days and every donation makes a difference in the lives of three people. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Early intervention vital for autistic children THANDI SETOKOE “WHILE April is Autism Awareness Month, it provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of support for research, early intervention, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment.” This, according to Zeidie-Lee Muller, centre manager of Victory Kids, a non-profit, public benefit organisation in Newton Park that supports early intervention centres for children with special needs. Imagine being told that your child would never be able to walk, talk or live independently – this is the sad reality that thousands of parents of children with the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) face every day. According to research, ASD is a brain disorder that too often results in a lifetime of impaired thinking, feeling and social functioning. The disorder, which becomes apparent generally by the age of three, typically affects a child’s ability to communicate, form relationships and respond appropriately to the external world. Recent statistics from the Centre for Diseases Control suggest that the numbers of ASD cases are on the rise with one in 68 children being diagnosed, while in South Africa it is believed that a child with ASD is born every 45 minutes. According to Muller, it is important to learn the early signs of autism and become familiar with the milestones a child should be reaching. “There are many warning signs or red flags but the signs and symptoms of autism vary widely, as do its effects. “Some have only mild impair-

Victory Kids provides an intensive programme to prepare young children, aged two to seven, for entering into a mainstream or special educational environment. Classes are kept small and the children receive intensive one-onone training allowing them the best chance to reach their potential. With one of the learners is teacher Michelle Swanepoel. PHOTO:THANDI SETOKOE ments, while others have more obstacles to overcome,” Muller said. She described how every child on the autism spectrum had problems, at least to some degree, in the following areas: communicating verbally and non-verbally, relating to others and the world around them and thinking and behaving flexibly. “When it comes to autism, catching it early makes a huge difference as treatment and therapy can reduce the disorder’s effects and help a child learn, grow and thrive,” Muller said. Speaking to Express, parents Clinton and Algene van Boomen said life wouldn’t be the same without their son, now four-years-old, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. “He has brought so much love and happiness into our lives. It’s important to take action as soon as you no-

tice that there is something wrong. “When we noticed the signs, we started doing research and decided to seek medical advice,” Algene said. Another parent, Shakira Hendricks, said the main thing people needed to realise was that autism was not like it is in the movies. “When you google autism there’s a lot of information, but it’s nothing like what we actually go through at home,” Hendricks said. The 37-year-old mother, who has two older children, described how the first two years following her son’s diagnosis were the hardest. “We were always covered in bruises. Your child wants to hurt you – they want to bite, kick and pinch you, and you have to try and stop them from doing that,” Hendricks added. Hendricks said, “What I love about

my older children, is that they are so open with the little one. He’ll pinch them and they’ll say ‘it’s fine mommy he’s just having a bad day’. “On days when I need silence they to try and calm their younger bother down. I’m truly blessed,” she said. Currently enrolled at Victory Kids, the two boys are said to have made amazing progress. “We can now take our son to the mall which was something that used to overwhelm him. He couldn’t stand the bright lights and noise. I have also stopped telling everyone that he is autistic because I’ve realised that if we don’t say it, people don’t even notice. It’s the labelling that makes people look at him differently,” Algene said. Hendricks said people need to understand that it’s okay to have an autistic child. “Yes, he looks like he’s four, but he is seven and I don’t care what people say.” Victory Kids was established in 2005 by Janine Thetard after moving to Port Elizabeth with her son, Joshua, who had severe epilepsy and was diagnosed with autism. Following her realisation that there was no facility to offer her son the applied behaviour analysis therapy he had been receiving, Thetard was prompted to develop and implement a similar programme. Sadly, in October of 2010, Joshua passed away at the age of 12. The centre is now run by Muller, together with a team of 14 dedicated teachers who come from psychology and teaching backgrounds. “We are now planning on building a new school because we can no longer enrol learners as our centre is now full to its capacity. It pains me to have to

The following “red flags” may indicate that a child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder: Social skills: . Unable to follow instructions. . Battles to maintain eye contact and does not respond to a smile. . Appears to be in their own world. . Delayed speech. . Responds to some sounds, not necessarily human voices.

Behaviour:

. Battles with changes in routines. . Self-injuring behaviour. . Emotional outbursts, with no apparent reason. . Attached to certain objects. . Repetitive/ritualistic behaviour.

Senses:

. Reacts strongly to some sounds. . Does not look at objects directly. . Does not feel pain or insensitive to extreme temperatures. . Fussy eater. . Walks on tip toes. . Watches certain patterns or feels certain textures.

Play and imagination:

. Only plays with certain toys, often inappropriately. . Often does not play with others. . Plays in a limited way. . No pretend play.

send away parents,” Muller said. The centre will be hosting their third annual Autism Awareness Walk under the theme, Light It Up Blue for Autism, from Happy Valley to Something Good and back on Saturday from 09:00. “After the walk, we would love to have a family picnic and games for the kids. Everyone is invited; just come dressed in blue and support all our young warriors,” Muller said.

ADVERTORIAL: THE CO-OP MICA

Prize trophies beckon as hunting season approaches THE hunt is almost on! Easter is behind us and temperatures are dropping, two sure signs that hunting season is just around the corner. For a true enthusiast, nothing beats the thrill of a good chase and being able to take that trophy home to show off to the guys. However, before you can start dreaming about the fresh mountain air around you, the blood pumping in your veins and that moment of absolute silence just before you pull the trigger, you have to think about preparation and supplies. Hunting season in the Eastern Cape opens in June and closes end of August each year. It may seem like it’s still way off, but before you

know it, time will have run out and the season will be underway. The Co-op Mica is the perfect place to find all the tools of the trade in one location. They stock firearms, ammo, camouflage, camping gear and hunting accessories, everything necessary to ensure that you and your hunting party set off on a grand adventure with nothing in mind but getting that buck in your sights. Three items in particular cannot be overlooked that will make it that much easier to add another trophy to your collection. An Xbag will see to it that your rifle is protected against bangs and bumps while fine tuning and shooting your rifle. A pair of Ranger binoculars will help you get your eye on the prize.

Whether you need a close-up of that prizewinning buck or a wider view to spot your target, Ranger is the way to go. Some of their binoculars are waterproof and suitable to use with or without spectacles. They are also powerful, lightweight and easy to use. The third item is the nifty Nikko Stirling rangefinder. It is used in many sports to measure the distance to a target. Stirling rangefinders are fast and easy to aim, water and dust resistant, and compact and lightweight. South Africa has become a prime hunting spot over the years. Its wide variety of animal species, which ranges from the prized kudu to the bushbuck, serves to tempt many a hunting enthusiast ev-

ery year to try to get one in their sights. After all, hunting in the Eastern Cape is a truly unique experience. The various different natural environments, such as the mountains, plains and densely wooded forests, only add to the challenge which is something most hunters thrive on. So, whether you are gearing up to take that annual men-only trip with the guys or your wife is brave enough to join you, make your way down to the Co-op to get your first taste of that adventure. For more info or advice on your hunting needs, visit the Co-op Mica, located in the Willow Road Shopping Centre on the corner of Circular Drive and Willow Road, or contact the sales team on 041 007 0580.

Local NPO inspires father to compete in IRONMAN REPORTER AMID the swarm of athletes that descended on Nelson Mandela Bay for the IRONMAN, which took place on Sunday, was local resident Jacques Barnard, who swam, biked and ran his heart out for The Hope Jones Foundation. The foundation is a local NPO which seeks to enable and empower children with disabilities to reach their full potential. It is named after Hope Jones, who was born with congenital myopathy, which severely affected all her voluntary muscles and caused a moderate hearing deficit. Approaching her 10th birthday, she has triumphed in overcoming many obstacles to become an inspiration to her family and community. “Our biggest aim is to raise awareness for children with disabilities in our city. Awareness leads to education and action, and compassion is only an emotion until it leads to action,” said Gary Jones, Hope’s father and initiator of the foundation. Describing his experiences as tough yet re-

warding, Barnard was motivated to compete in the 10-year anniversary of the IRONMAN in 2014 and has not missed a year since. This year he finished the race with a time of 13:43:46 and came in 191st out of 256 participants in the male 40-44 age group. He finished 1211 out of 1708 overall. Barnard had no trouble with the swimming and cycling events but found the run a bit more difficult as a breeze picked up in the evening. “Overall, it was a great effort by Jacques and we are very proud of him,” said Jones. Barnard’s son, Luke, a Grade 7 learner at St George’s Preparatory School, was chosen as one of the foundation ambassadors for 2018. “As ambassadors they get to share an amazing journey of discovery through the Able Bodied Children for Disabled Bodied Children programme (ABC4DBC). “My connection stems out of his involvement with the foundation and the realisation that we as parents can also contribute in a variety of ways,” Barnard said. His hope is to raise awareness for the foun-

World’s best riders to compete at Winterberg National Enduro REPORTER ROVER Motorcycle Club will be hosting the Rover Winterberg National Enduro and TBone Junior Inter Provincial on April 28. This event forms part of the National Series for 2018 and takes place at Greater Van der Kemps Kloof off Mission Road. The GPS co-ordinates are -33,90543, 25,45458. The organisers expect to see in excess of

dation and to raise funds for their many projects and programmes. Combining this with his love for triathlon is a plus. The Hope Jones Foundation was established in 2011. Officially launched with their ABC4DBC ambassador programme in February of 2013, learners champion the cause of disabled children. Hence, the youth have become the “voice” for disabled children within their schools, communities and countries. “I have done endurance sports for over 20 years and have received so much out of it. Having the ability to complete endurance races brings with it an amazing sense of gratefulness, as there are so many people out there who are unable to follow suit,” Barnard said. “There is a Jim Watkins quote that says, ‘A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence’. With a clear vision of the end goal and with enough dedication and persistence, we can achieve greatness no matter what our circumstances are or what challenges we face.” For more info visit the Hope Jones Foundation Facebook page.

All systems go for winter sports at Alpha

150 top riders on the day competing for their respective championships. Two of the world’s top five enduro riders, Travis Teasedale and Wade Young, have announced that they will take part in the event. Tim Young will, more than likely, also be in the line-up. This will be a Winterberg to remember. Food, coffee and beverages will be on sale. The location and course layout are exceptional for spectator viewing. Alpha Primary School is ready for the winter sport codes season with newly appointed educators. At the back from left are Gregory Petersen (rugby), Chantel Arendt (netball), Claudia Gie (girls’ hockey) and Anthony Walton (deputy principal and director of sport at Alpha Primary). In front, from left, are Byron Dolley (soccer), Ragen Human (rugby), Glynique Jacobs (netball), Cameron Jenneker (hockey) and Bubele Mkatshana (cross-country). PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Nelson Mandela Bay gripped by IRONMAN fever Hard work, perseverance and sheer grit are what drove athletes, both big and small and from all over the world, across the finish line this past weekend. The young and the business-minded saw their hard work pay off during the Isuzu Corporate Triathlon Challenge and the Spur IRONKIDS events that took place on Saturday, April 14, while the rest took on the daunting task of completing the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship on Sunday. It turned out to be an especially great year for Nelson Mandela Bay when local resident Kyle Buckingham stepped up to take first place in the event on Sunday. LULAMA ZENZILE was also there to capture the unique IRONMAN spirit.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Red Bull win Chinese thriller THE 2018 Chinese Grand Prix may have taken some time to kick off, but once it came alive, it produced one of the most thrilling and memorable races for quite some time. Ferrari’s front-row lockout in Saturday’s qualifier, some half a second clear of the first Mercedes, set up what seemed like a foregone victory for the Italian team. However, even as dominant as Mercedes have been in the hybrid era Formula 1 remains one, if not the, most unpredictable sport in the world. Nevertheless, the race got off without too much excitement. Sebastian Vettel cut off teammate Kimi Raikkonen to retain the lead while the Finn dropped behind the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

The opening stint of the race was uneventful with Vettel heading to a third win in as many races. However, it was a dubious day for Ferrari as Mercedes, with Bottas, took over the lead with a sharper strategy call. Ferrari weren’t done with the astonishing calls though as they decided to leave Kimi Raikkonen out on track to serve as a blocker for teammate Vettel in his quest to get back the lead of the race from Bottas. Ferrari’s call dropped Raikkonen to sixth after the pitstop. To treat their last world champion in such a manner was nothing less than shameful by Ferrari. The race kicked off soon after as Pierre Gasly crashed into the side of his Toro Rosso teammate Brendon Hartley. Not only did Gasly incur a

10-second penalty, but the debris strewn across turn 14 prompted the deployment of the safety car. While Bottas and Vettel missed a chance to dive into the pitlane for fresh tyres both Red Bulls of Verstappen and Ricciardo were called in and armed with new soft tyres. Again, Ferrari was outsmarted on strategy as there was enough time to make the call to switch Raikkonen to new tyres. Mind you, Mercedes didn’t call in Hamilton either, but they did this as they thought track position would be more important than fresh rubber. The pace advantage of both Red Bulls was clear immediately in comparison to Raikkonen, Hamilton, Vettel and Bottas. But Verstappen proved too impet-

Old Buck Gin league kicks off with a surprise FRANCOIS J ROTHNER THE PELFA Old Buck Gin league kicked off last week with a surprise result as well as the drubbing of one of the newcomers in the league. Priory, who in 2017, ended second last on the log surprised the defending league champions, Kuyga Masters, in their own backyard 2-1. About 20 minutes into the game Pri-

ory’s Brent Kopps had them one up from a well taken free kick. Kuyga Masters went into half-time trying to get back on even terms. Halfway through the second half, Lloyd Croft scored a second goal for Priory. Kuyga kept trying and eventually had to be satisfied with a lone goal from Enoch Chekure, two minutes from the final whistle. At Londt Park Sports Club, Sham-

rocks had their shooting boots on when they nailed newcomers St Albans 9-1. The Rocks scored six times in the first half, with goals coming off the boots of Ranga Pilay, Naj Padachie, Nolan Padayachee and Kumarin Naidoo, who scored a hat-trick. In the second half, Zayaan Verrie got one, Padachie completed his brace and Naidoo added a fourth. It was the most goals ever scored by one team in one

uous in his overtaking moves as he ran off track when attempting to overtake Hamilton. He regrouped but got it wrong again when he hit Vettel at the turn-14 hairpin. The Dutchman was given a 10-second penalty and will undoubtedly receive a talking to from his team. He’ll be well advised to take note of his teammate Daniel Ricciardo who pulled off several stunning moves. First, he came from impossibly far back to take the place off Hamilton at the hairpin and followed it a lap later by easily picking off Vettel at the same spot. The best of the lot was the audacious move on Bottas to take the lead of the race. Ricciardo scampered off into the distance to secure the sixth win of his career. Bottas held on to a solid second place by just six tenths of a second. Raikkonen secured third despite being hung out to dry by Ferrari. Though Verstappen recovered from his collision with Vettel, his fourth on the track turned into fifth

with a warranted 10-second penalty for causing a collision. Hamilton trundled home in a desolate fourth in what was an off-colour weekend for the reigning champion. Nico Hulkenberg brought his Renault home in a solid sixth place ahead of Fernando Alonso’s McLaren in seventh. Vettel limped home in eighth with Carlos Sainz and Kevin Magnussen rounding out the top 10. Ricciardo’s brilliant win in China illustrated a F1 team in perfect synergy. The team was pushed to the limits after needing to change the Australian’s engine on Saturday in time for qualifying. A job that normally takes three hours to complete was miraculously accomplished in two. And then there was the genius strategy calls and tremendous work in the pitlane to stop and service both cars back-to-back. To top it all off, Ricciardo provided the icing on the cake with a sensational driving performance. Now that is Formula 1 at its best.

match in the league’s history. Newcomers Central Acemates opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over PE City. Acemates’ Nceba Mroqoza scored late in the second half. Roger Nena pulled one back for City and Elethu Mthakathi sealed the win for Acemates late in the second half. At The Oval, home team NMBM and African Leopards played out a 3-3 draw. Tabo Simane, Andile McClean and Ncedisa Goniwe scored for Leopards while Shannon Sokiya with two and Mfundo Gqirhana with one secured

the draw for the home side. Callies got their 2018 campaign off with a winning start beating Fairview Rovers 2-0 on home turf. Davey Brooks and Nigel Bailey were the two goal scorers. Eleven Brothers tame Young Tigers at the weekend SELBY MADIKANE ELEVEN Brothers defeated Young Tigers 2-1 in the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) First Division clash that was played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. Brothers were awarded a penalty after Thando Jacobs was brought down by one of Tigers’ defenders in the penalty area. Jacobs himself scored the resulting penalty. Tigers clawed back into the game and replied with Unathi Kwakwari’s goal from the penalty spot and the two sides went to the break on level terms. In the second half, fans saw the teams play their hearts out. The tempo of the game was very fast. As the clock was winding down, Kwakwari failed to convert a fine opportunity into a goal. However, Brothers made their chance count

after Jacobs unleashed a close range shot that Tigers’ keeper was unable to save and Brothers sealed the game at 2-1. Tigers’ head coach, Melikhaya Cakwebe, stated that his side “played like a wounded lion”. “I am very proud of my boys because they put up a good fight. I can see that there is a change in our team. “These youngsters will be the best players in the future because they are willing to learn from the senior players. With time, everything is going to be right,” said Cakwebe. Ideas play to hard-fought draw against Madibaz IT was crunch time when Young Ideas shared a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Madibaz Football in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (SAFA NMB) SAB Regional League clash that took place at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. The students took the game to the home side, but goalkeeper Asanda Mari stood his ground for Ideas. Ideas’ talented youngster, Aviwe Vani, kept

on unleashing shots at Madibaz’ goalkeeper, Mzwandile Mvunyiswa, who showed his class. Madibaz took the lead after Athenkosi Papu came up with a superb goal in the 41st minute. Ideas equalised thanks to Abongile Thwala Madela from the penalty spot in the second half. Ideas could have led 2-1, but Vani’s shot went very close to the goals with goalkeeper Mvunyiswa well beaten.

Madibaz failed to score from a set piece after Ideas goalkeeper Mari collected a playback pass. Continental players reign supreme in Industrial League SELBY MADIKANE SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Industrial League reigning champions Continental Express were ruthless when they thwarted Faurecia 6-0 in their match at Mooredyke Field on Sunday. The defending champions showed what they were made of when they did not give their opponents a chance to breathe. It was clear that Continental did their homework because they excelled across the field. The champions had the lion’s share of ball possession throughout the game. Their counterparts had to defend all the way and failed to come up with a goal. Continental’s goal poacher, Lukhanyo Sherriff Rasmeni, scored the first goal of the match. The defence of Faurecia was under immense pressure when Rasmeni managed to score his second goal. Continental kept on knocking on the door of Faurecia, so much so that Rasmeni pulled his trigger to beat the opposition’s goalkeeper to increase the score to 3-0 in favour of Continental. In the second half, the champions were like a house on fire. Luvuyo Msetu scored Continental’s fourth goal. Continental increased their lead to 5-0 following a goal by Msetu and Rasmeni scored his fourth goal that put the last nail into Faurecia’s coffin.

This fun obstacle run is achievable for the most social jogger with half a dozen or more exciting obstacles. The kids’ run starts at 09:00 on Sunday, followed by the 5km muck run at 10:00 with great food vendors on site. The run has also teamed up with the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise to collect all unwanted clothing, bedding and blankets ahead of the winter. Participants are encouraged to bring all their unwanted goods with them on race day. Entries are just R150 for the kids run and all the entrants who confirmed before the end of this month, will receive a branded head band. The 5km Muck Run is R200 and all the entrants who confirmed before the end of this month, will receive a branded Muck Run white T-shirt to run in. Discounted group and corporate packages are also available as well as a family rate of R500 per family of four or more. There is also a charge of R20 per vehicle onto the farm for participants and spectators. There are prizes from Woodlands Dairy, Powerade and Caltex Eastern Cape up for grabs for fun categories like best dressed, muddiest, most fun and best spirit. For further information or to see videos of previous Muck Run events, see www.MuckRun.co.za. The Muck Run entries are limited so register soonest to avoid disappointment.
