Iconic train steams again CARALEE DORFLING

T took seven years to accomplish, but this holiday season the iconic Apple Express was back on track, albeit only for a period of three weeks along a shortened route and sporting a new name. The steam train, which last took to the tracks in 2010 and subsequently fell victim to coper thieves, was launched again at the end of last year with its locomotive sporting a bright red jacket and a new name. The relaunched narrow gauge steam train made its first trip on December 26, carrying passengers between Kings Beach and the Port Elizabeth Airport. The last two scheduled trips for the festive season, which at time of going to print on Monday, were already fully booked, will take place this Saturday and Sunday. “In future, the train will be named the Nelson Mandela Bay Steam Train,” said Andrew Whitfield, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture at the media launch.

Nerina Skuy, CEO of the Apple Express Rail Company, said the relaunch of the train was due in great part to the efforts of the volunteers, with many years of experience, who ensured that the train is preserved for future generations. “The train will now be used to boost development for the future of the metro,” said Skuy. The relaunch was aimed at looking at the feasibility of running the train in the future. “We are very grateful for the overwhelming reaction from the public,” said Skuy According to Whitfield, the first phase to get the wheels rolling again cost R2 million. This enabled the train to offer an hour-long ride from Kings Beach to the Port Elizabeth Airport. “But with phase two the train will ride all the way through Walmer township to the Baywest Shopping Centre,” said Whitfield. Discussions will be held with the residents of Walmer Township about the project before work is started on the track in the township. There are also plans afoot to build a platform for passengers at the Baywest Shopping Centre. The iconic Apple Express steam train was relaunched at the end of last year with its locomotive sporting a new, bright red jacket and a new name – the Nelson Mandela Bay Steam Train.

Phelophepa health care train on its way to Bay ANIKA DE BEER THE Transnet Phelophepa Health Care Train, which prides itself on bringing affordable and quality primary health care to rural and poor urban towns around South Africa, will be visiting the Eastern Cape once more from January 22 to March 28. It will be making five stops in the province, starting with Swartkops in Port Elizabeth from January 22 to February 2. The second stop will be Burgersdorp from February 5 to February 16, followed by a visit to Mthatha from February 19 to March 2, before moving on to Dutywa from March 5 to March 16 and finally to Mount Ruth from March 19 to March 28. Though the train initially only targeted the vulnerable groups in the communities, everyone is now welcome to visit the train to receive basic health care. “Phelophepa works on a first-come, firstserved basis where everyone from the community is welcomed and encouraged to access the services,” said Zingisa Sofayiya, project manager of the Port Elizabeth Community Development Unit. The trains travel for 36 weeks each year,

Health Care Train is the prevention and early detection of medical conditions, as well as screening, education and making
people aware of the importance of looking after their own health. The train provides a range of services in communities where they currently do not exist and enhances existing health services provided by the government in other areas. Services offered by the train include health education, cancer and diabetes educare and counselling and psychology. They also boast an eye clinic and a dental clinic. Most of the services offered by the train are free, though there is a small charge for medication and other items, such as glasses and eye drops. “Patients need to bring along their clinic cards, as well as immunisation cards for children. If one does not have a clinic card, they will then need to bring their medication if they are on any chronic medication,” Sofayiya said. “We encourage people to come as early as possible, starting from the first week, and bring along their lunch, as well as medication.” The Transnet Phelophepa Health Care Train will make its first stop in the Eastern Cape on its annual visit at Swartkops Train Station from January 22 to February 2.

Equipment arrives for new multi billion rand vehicle assembly plant REPORTER THE first shipment of vehicle assembly plant equipment for the new BAIC automotive manufacturing facility, currently under construction in the Coega Special Economic Zone, has arrived in Port Elizabeth. The R11 billion car plant, a joint initiative of China’s Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC), which is the majority shareholder with a 65% stake, and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), is South Africa’s largest motor investment in nearly 50 years. In a statement released last year, BAIC SA said the equipment was shipped from Tianjin, located in the northern coastal mainland of China, late in September last year. The shipment comprises components for
vehicle assembly, welding and painting plant equipment, the statement read. BAIC noted that industry standard equipment, online testing, installation services, logistics and consumable items will be locally procured, accounting for 15% of the total equipment value in terms of the agreement with Beijing Industrial Designing and Research Institute (BIDR), the Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) contractor in the construction phase of the BAIC SA plant. Commenting on technical specifications, BAIC SA’s head of marketing and planning, Gary Yang, described that the under body, main body and body adjustment line will enable the manufacturing of both left and right hand drives with 14.5 jobs per hour (JPH). Yang further noted that welding automa-
tion will reach 60% and body transfer automation will be 100%. “The assembly line is flexible to handle various body structure vehicle assembly. Our modular engineering design will accommodate a variety of assembly procedures for different models,” he said. Yang added that the painting line is also flexible for various models. “Painting automation can reach 34.3% with 100% automatic parts feeding function on SKD and CKD models. “Painting robots from ABB are employed for 100% automatic exterior painting.” Commenting on the project completion date for the plant, Yang said they were on track with the project’s timelines while a major milestone is the completion and installation of the assembly shop roof structure.

Test case on SASSA payments on track REPORTER THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) successfully initiated a test case last month to directly pay about 100 social grant beneficiaries using commercial bank accounts of their choice as part of the January 2018 payment cycle. “With effect from February 1, SASSA will continue to make direct deposits into all beneficiary
commercial bank accounts. “SASSA has received and confirmed details of the commercial bank accounts of more than 2 million beneficiaries, who are receiving their social grants through banks,” said SASSA CEO Pearl Bengu. According to Bengu, the 100 beneficiaries’ test case was part of implementing SASSA’s plan to insource social grant payments. The plan will be implemented in an incremental and phased manner
leading to a desired future state where SASSA owns, operates and delivers a ‘’one-stop’’ grant administration and payment service. SASSA will continue to pay all beneficiaries who receive their grants at cash paypoints or who use various merchants throughout the country. The SASSA payment card use has been extended until December 31 this year and will be used to access social grants.

Writing enthusiast Jaftha has a target of setting up 100 writers’ clubs across the country within the next two years. “I believe that it’s possible. The response has been amazing.
“The writing club was established in October (last year) and we already have two schools on board, 28 and 30 members respectively - a total of 58 till now,” Jaftha said. He said all that is needed is an appropriate model that can be used to assist and encourage the youngsters with their writing skills as so much potential goes unnoticed. “The pupils are really eager to learn. However, the focus was on studying for the exams (at the time of establishing the club).
“From the beginning of this year we are going to hit the road running. A possible target is a combined publication by these young pupils after a year,” he said. Charles Jeffrey, one of the facilitators of the new writers’ club, said he is positive about the initiative and looks forward to where it is going. “We have also consolidated a group to allow the pupils enough time to write material during the long school holiday period,” Jeffrey said. Grade 7 teacher Rudolph Jaftha
brought a different perspective, noting that some learners prefer to write rap lyrics and do not realise that they do have the ability to write poetry. “It’s important to accommodate these youngsters, instead of leaving them isolated. Their content creates opportunities for education. Some poems walk around in ‘black tie suits’ and others in ‘jeans and takkies’,” he said. PE Airport gives township literacy a boost with mobile library REPORTER PORT Elizabeth International Airport has sponsored the Masibambisane Home Base Care and Development Centre, a non-profit organisation operating in the Joe Slovo West township in Kwadwesi, with a mobile library. This innovative mobile library is stocked with 200 books and caters for pupils from Grades 1 to 7. The children at the centre come from a community which does not have access to a library. Research has shown that access to libraries improves learner performance and increases their chances of success. The airport’s socioeconomic development (SED) chairperson,
Thandiwe Nkwandla, said it was envisaged that the library would provide a major boost to the children’s reading skills. The airport was approached by the CEO of Masibambisane, Mirriam Mbekela, who made an impassioned plea for assistance. Following consultation with the airport’s SED committee, it was agreed that a library would be sponsored. Stanley Timuri, a mentor appointed by Masibambisane, said he was delighted that they now had the much-needed resources to boost their learners’ literacy skills. “We will ensure that our children maximise these resources so that our learners excel in their reading and writing skills,” Timuri said.
Airport regional manager Steven Maphalla said he was proud of the SED committee in putting this project together. “Today society takes so much for granted and very few people take the time to consider the plight of those who face difficulties, often not of their making. “For children to have a chance at improving their literacy, furthering their education and essentially advancing their place in this world, access to books is paramount,” Maphalla said. The project was coordinated by Keith Sorensen of New Africa Education Foundation, a non-profit organisation that has partnered with Port Elizabeth International Airport and the Department of Basic Education.

Event network to host first gospel music awards in PE REPORTER ANDIPHELI Amandla Live in Concert, a religious organisation trading as Mpumakoloni International Gospel Music Awards (MKIGMA), is on a mission to extend and grow the gospel music genre, both in South Africa and abroad. MKIGMA is a Port Elizabethbased gospel event network that was established in 2015 by an independent gospel artist, named Odwa. The network event feature gos-

Mount Fletcher matriculant is top of class in EC CARALEE DORFLING THE top 2017 matriculant of the Eastern Cape comes from the remote town of Mount Fletcher. Reamohetse Mofitiso, of the Lehana Senior Secondary School, was announced as the top matriculant in the province by Mandla Makupula, MEC for Education, at a prestigious ceremony in East London on Friday night. “I never thought that I would come first,” Reamohetse said on Friday night. He obtained 100% for Physical Science and Geography. Aside from Life Orientation, he obtained above 90% for the rest of his subjects. He said that it was only hard work and dedication that brought him his success. His grandmother, Christina Mofitiso, with
whom he lives, said on Friday that she had strict instructions from her grandson to wake him early in the mornings that he could learn for an extra hour or two. “And now he is number one in the province; it is incredible; he deserves it,” Mofitiso said. Reamohetse was also announced as one of the top 20 matriculants in the country on Thursday night – he is first in the quintile 1 division. Quintile 1 schools are not allowed to charge school fees and have limited to very little resources. Abigail “Abby” Sieberhagen of Pearson High School in Port Elizabeth came a close second. She obtained distinctions in all eight of her subjects. She obtained 100% for History. “I have always worked to get here some day.

Rengqe said before his matric year, he watched television every afternoon after school until late at night. But in January last year he decided to turn all his attention to his schoolwork. His mother, Nolubabalo, can attest to this. “When I saw him after school, he always had a book in his hands. “He was a completely different child and now all his hard work reflects in his marks,” Nolubabalo said while she tried to stop her tears. Hy is planning to study Computer Science this year.

Try Again kick off New Year on a positive note SELBY MADIKANE TRY Again Football Club (TAFC) embarrassed Lion City 3-1 in front of their diehard supporters during their ABC Motsepe League clash that took place at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. City took the game to the visitors with their midfielders winning the lion’s share of ball possession. Ayabonga Koli, Mnoneleli Zitho, Luxolo Tobi and Kgasane Kgasane piled immense pressure on their counterparts. Koli whipped a perfect cross to Freedom Masixole Funani who headed home a world-class goal. City could have scored more goals, but their strikers were harmless in front of TAFC’s goalkeeper, Sikelela Pink.
TAFC striker Samkelo Koti scored the equalising goal after a long struggle late in the first half. The two sides then went to the break with a goal apiece. TAFC stepped up their game in the second half with City’s experienced midfielder, Zitho, sustaining an injury. Head coach Thembinkosi Bigman Lindani had no option but to replace Zitho with Thozamile Bojo Magwala. Zitho played an instrumental role in the midfield and his absence was highly felt as his side’s midfielders looked disjointed. TAFC increased their lead following a goal that was banged in by Yanga Sigidi. City could not crack the defence of TAFC because their 10 players made sure the hosts did not get a chance to score. Koti put the last nail into City’s coffin when he scored his second
goal that made the final score 3-1 in favour of TAFC. In another game, Highbury FC started the year in grand style after they walloped Butterworth 4-0 at Gelvandale Stadium. Abdul “Charlie” Seidu came up with a brace while Masixole “China” Mkokeli and Chris Vena scored a goal apiece. SUBS also registered an emphatic 3-1 win over Matta Milan in Butterworth, while PE Stars secured a comprehensive 5-1 away victory over Future Tigers in Ginsberg. The Brazilians, as PE Sundowns are popularly called by their supporters, made things difficult for the hosts as they were forced to defend for almost the entire first half. Motherwell goalkeeper Avela Mahambehlala stood his ground as the visitors’ strikers kept on shooting at the goals. Sundowns broke the ice after Thulani Mini guided his side to a 1-0 lead until the 45th min-
ute. Downs’ goalkeeper, Nyaniso Hilita, made few saves in the first half and the Motherwell strikers did not get any more goal-scoring opportunities. Motherwell had a bright start to the second half. New Year’s Cup final in Grahamstown a resounding success SELBY MADIKANE THE New Year’s Cup tournament turned to be a resounding success with Makana Rhini United (MARU) defending their title during the finals, which were played at JD Dlepu Stadium in Grahamstown on December 31. Some of the games, including the last 16 matches, were played in Motherwell and Walmer Township during the festive season. Dignitaries attending the tournament included Laliga Africa head Antonio Barradas, Safa president Dr Danny Jordaan, Safa NEC member Mzimkhulu Fina, Safa EC secretary Isaac Klaas, Mercedes Benz SA (product and marketing) Vusumzi Vusani, Safa NMB president Simphiwe MK Mkangelwa, Chippa United head coach Tebogo Moloi, Kaizer Chiefs explayer Patrick Mayo, Golden Arrows ex-player Mzuvukile Tom, and Orlando Pirates players Justice Tshabalala and Luvuyo Memela. What 2018 will look like for Formula 1 REPORTER THE new year is here and it brings with it the prospect of a new Formula 1 season. Though there are no great changes in regulations, the modifications for the 2018 season could still have a significant impact. Aesthetically there is good news and bad news for the 2018 cars. The good news is that the T-wings and shark-fins will no longer feature thanks to a tweak of the aero rules. Like it or loathe it, the halo head protection system is coming in 2018. There’s little doubt that the halo will make a significant visual impact to F1, but it’s not the only impact it will have. The two other factors that would have been giving several designers prolonged headaches, is the effect it will have on aero performance and the weight addition. While the FIA has added 6kg to the overall weight limit of the cars, rumours are that the halo comes in at around 15kg. This will likely force teams in-
to trimming weight in other areas of the car. One of the more preposterous rules for 2018 is the limit of three power units for the entire 21-race season. It means that each engine will now have to last seven races. This, in the name of cost saving, means manufacturers will need to balance reliability and performance on a knife-edge. With only three engines, it’s likely to be inevitable that all teams will incur grid penalties at some point, including the frontrunners. The irony of it all is that money won’t be saved on power units. Toro Rosso in particular will be hoping that Honda has solved its woeful reliability record as it starts its partnership with the Japanese manufacturer this year. While Honda’s performance saw a slight upturn with McLaren in the latter half of the 2017 season, they still have a long way to go to catch up to Renault – let alone Mercedes and Ferrari. Elsewhere, McLaren and Fernando Alonso will be hoping that Renault has solved its own reliability issues that marred the end of the 2017 season. There is great expectation that bolting the Renault into the back of
the McLaren will push it up the grid. How far they’ll progress remains to be seen. Sauber too are looking to recover from one of the worst seasons on record. They’ll be doing so with the signing of F2, formerly GP2, champion and Ferrari Academy driver Charles le Clerc. Despite jumping into the highpressure cauldron of F1, there is high expectations for Le Clerc who is considered one of the best young drivers. Another boost to Sauber’s 2018 bid is a new technical and commercial partnership with Alfa Romeo. While the car will be decked out in Alfa red, the link up also means access to Ferrari’s latest power units. With all of this said, there are still many more scenarios, issues, permutations, and speculations for the new season. Will Mercedes be able to hold off Ferrari and perhaps even Red Bull? What of the intra-team battle between Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo? How far can McLaren go with Renault power? What impact will Pirelli’s remodelled tyres have on track?

SA youth shine bright in Triathlon Summer Series REPORTER SEVERAL young South Africans secured their statuses as athletes during the 2017 About IT Triathlon Summer Series which took place last month. One of them is 20-year-old Keegan Cooke, a Port Elizabeth resident, who defended his Men’s title on December 26 in Port St Francis. This put the cap on an exceptional year for him, as he participated in both his first African Triathlon Champs in Tunisia and his first ITU World Championship event. Cooke competed in the About IT Series as part of his training for the ITU Championship event that is taking place in Cape Town in two months’ time, where he will be hoping for a solid top 10 position. ber Schlebusche also made a name for herself when she claimed her maiden About IT Triathlon Summer Series title with four wins from four races. The 16-year-old enjoyed taking part in her first Sprint Distance Series in the Eastern Cape and ended up walking away with the spoils. Stellenbosch star athlete Jamie Riddle was in second place at the start of the cycle leg, but had to withdraw from the race after a car accident. Carl Mangan placed second overall with Graeme Renard in third place, while Antonella Saporta placed second in the ladies’ race ahead of Sally Waterworth. “Camaraderie, great racing and fantastic sportsmanship throughout the About IT Summer Series Triathlon is what we as a local business are excited to be a part of in the Eastern Cape,” said About IT local busi-

Madibaz netball players dominate annual awards REPORTER THE SPAR Madibaz players continued to show their dominance in the Nelson Mandela Bay Netball Association’s competitions by scooping a dozen awards at the organisation’s annual prize-giving at the end of last year. Leading the way for the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) club was Jeanie Steyn, who was named the region’s player of the year. The number of awards continued a 15year trend during which the university had become a dominant force in local netball, said Madibaz netball manager Melinda Goosen. “Although we did not win the league, you

Goosen also praised player of the year Steyn for her efforts during the year. “Jeanie struggled with a niggling injury, but she never stopped giving her all. That sort of commitment helped the club come through the year with top honours.” Goosen said they were happy with the playing standard their teams had produced this year, including the Varsity Netball competition, in which they ended fifth on the final log. “Now we are looking to build for next year.
