Uniformed policeman robbed in KwaDwesi

UNIFORMED policeman was brutally attacked and robbed this weekend by five men who wanted him to hand over his fire-arm.

Sergeant Mandlenkosi Mpakama (56), who is stationed at Kwazakhele Police Station, was allegedly on his way to work in Badela Street in KwaMagxaki at about 5am on Saturday, when he was approached by about five suspects.

“The unknown suspects stopped their vehicle, a sky-blue Nissan Sentra, jumped out and attacked the police officer who was in uniform, but without a firearm,” said police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge.

The suspects took Sgt Mpakama’s belongings, cards, cash and cell phone.

But when they realised that the officer had no firearm in his possession, they became angry and started to assault the policeman relentlessly, according to Beetge.

One of the suspects hit the policeman with a stone on his forehead.

Then all five of them started to beat him.

“They became angry and agitated when they could not find a firearm and started beating me badly with stones,” Sgt Mpakama, a father of two, said.

Sgt Mpakama thanked God that his attackers did not have guns and knives, “Otherwise, they could have killed me, “ he said.

Church leader Dr Reverend Xolani Tengo was so shocked over the attack on Sgt Mpakama that he sent the picture of the battered and bruised policeman to media houses.

He was, however, not available for comment.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said that as the municipality they are committed to providing better and safer communities.

Beetge said police were appealing to members of the community who might have witnessed the incident to please inform KwaDwesi police.

“These thugs are dangerous. If they could do that to a policeman, it means they could do it to anyone. They must be reported and we’ll make sure that they are thrown behind bars,” said Captain Beetge.

Transnet promotes maths and science with tour REPORTER TRANSNET Port Terminals’ (TPT) Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) celebrated Transport Month by providing an educational tour for 20 learners in grade 9 – 11 from Transnet adopted villages in Motherwell.

The tour exposed the learners to career opportunities at TPT and encouraged them to pursue careers in the field of maths and science in order to contribute to the national strategy to improve maths and science, as

well as technology skills amongst the youth.

SA celebrated Transport Month in October with the 2014 theme “Together we move forward” to coincide with 20 years of freedom.

Uniting Presbyterian Church in act of good will for needy school children NCEBA DLADLA THE Church as the body of Christ has a responsibility to look after the lonely, hungry, despised, sick and dying in the community to give them hope.

This is according to Uniting Presbyterian Church’s Reverend Xolani Mzendana of the M. Makwetu Memorial Congregation in Makwela Street, Kwazakhele.

He was speaking to PE Express Indaba during his church’s donation of school shirts to needy pupils of Ben Nyathi Primary School, last Friday.

The event was part of the church’s outreach programme, held annually under the auspices of the Women’s Manyano.

“The school helped us by identifying children coming from financially struggling families and we, through the Women’s Manyano, raised funds and donated what we thought would make a difference in the lives of these little ones, namely school shirts,” said

Ben Nyathi Primary School celebrates graduation ceremony of Grade R pupils NCEBA DLADLA KWAZAKHELE Township’s Ben Nyathi Public Primary School celebrated the graduation ceremony of its Grade R toddlers Daku Hall last Friday, The event was attended by the School Management Team (SMT), the School Governing Body (SGB), teachers, parents and invited guests.

The young children were robed in gowns with woods showing graduation in engineering, medicine, teaching, priesthood, nursing and pharmacy, to mention but a few.

Before graduation, the children sang and danced as well as recited poetry to show the audience what they have learnt in the school throughout the year.

Messages like “Don’t touch my body”, “Love me but please don’t abuse me” resonated from the little ones.

“This is one of the very important days in our school calendar. Everybody in the school

looks forward to this event and it means a lot to our young children as well,” said school principal Mazotsho Dukwe.

Head of Department Siziwe Thomas said the event was not only celebrated by the school as part of a milestone in the lives of the children they taught the three Rs; Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, it was also important to the community as a step towards fighting illiteracy and the achievement of a better life.

The children graduated to be in the Grade 1 class which is offered in the school until Grade 7 from which they graduate to high school.

Thomas said they were already accepting 5-6 years-olds for next year’s class.

was their responsibility to reach-out to the community in which they worshipped.

Mzendana said Amadodana (Young Men’s Guild), Iintombi (Girls Guild), Ulutsha (Youth) and Sunday School worked with the Women’s Manyano to make the donation possible every year and to help the church to make a difference in the community including visiting and helping orphanages.

“This is part of our annual programme. We chose Ben Nyathi Primary School this year as the beneficiary because we’ve seen the need,” said Mothers Union member Nosipho Notshe, adding that through this act of goodwill they wanted to encourage the children to come to school.

“We are planting hope in the hopeless situation many of these children find themselves in,” Mzandana said, adding that he hoped many people would support those in need to make this a better life for all.

“What a difference they made to the school!

We thank Rev Mzendana and his congregation, the Uniting Presbyterian Church. May the Lord bless them,” said school principal Mazotsho Dukwe.

War of words over Livingstone Hospital LIZEKA TANDWA

A WAR of words has erupted after DA shadow

Minister of Health, Dr Wilmot James, accused the Provincial Health Department of gross mismanagement and found that there was a dangerous medicine shortage at PE’s Livingstone Hospital.

Dr James has been accused by the Department of Health’s Provincial spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, of lying and orchestrating a plot to embarrass the ruling party. Dr James compiled a report after an oversight visit to the hospital last week.

Dr James said he found critical problem areas which needed immediate attention by the health ministry, including the following: • The shortage of medicine for chronic diseases such as TB and HIV; • The Department of Health bungled a tender for medicine distribution, making a late tender announcement; • The late distribution of medication to the hospital by the provincial department.

• The R15 million world-class Ebola isolation ward which has remained a white elephant since being installed in 2010; • Contamination of critical medication; • Old medicine lines are being phased out and new ones phased in, with no training provided to the health professionals charged with administering and dispensing the medication to pa-

tients.

Kupelo, however, denied these claims saying the DA’s allegations against the hospital were false. He added that the allegations were a part of a ploy to discredit the ANC. “Allegations by the DA are untrue. We can confirm the visit by Democratic Alliance members to Livingstone Hospital; however, the allegations that the hospital is experiencing a stock shortage are mischievous and are designed to embarrass the ruling party, as political parties are contesting by-elections in the Metro. It is unfortunate that the hospital is targeted and that the DA has chosen to spread lies about health services in this area.”

Kupelo said the hospital currently had 98% of its critical chronic medication, saying that a medical depot was available in the Metro.

“We need to emphasize the fact that there is no shortage of medicines at Livingstone hospital or in our main provincial medical depot.

“We have stock of all the items listed by the DA in its media statement except furosemide injectable. Furosemide tablets are available as are other alternatives which would depend on a doctor’s assessment of the condition of the patient.

“This furosemide injectable is not available owing to a manufacturer’s problem nationally and is affecting not only the Eastern Cape province.

“We wish to congratulate the Democratic Alliance for wittingly or unwittingly embarrassing themselves in their desperate attempt to fault the people’s government.

“We further challenge them to substantiate their claim or shut up,” said Kupelo.

Dr James said he had spoken to the Medical Control Council (MCC) - a statutory body that oversees the regulation of medicines in South Africa - as well as the Hospital’s senior leadership, who both agreed with his findings.

“The statement made by the Department of Health Provincial spokesperson I reject with the contempt it deserves. I will not stoop to his level and will let only the facts speak for themselves.

I have spoken to the MCC and the senior management at the hospital who concur with my findings. It is quite clear there is poor management of medication in the province and nationally and the Minister of Health needs to be thorough and ensure that this problem is solved,” said Dr James.

Some of the medication Dr James claims are in shortfall include: •ACE Inhibitors needed to treat hypertension; •Furosemide for treating water retention linked usually to heart failure and liver disease; •Asthma pumps; •Syringes; •Multi-drug resistance TB drugs; •Oral hypoglycemic drugs.

In a media statement Dr James said that the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, immediately responded by arranging a meeting on his (James’s) request to intervene immediately at the hospital to ensure that it is stocked with the

necessary medicines to treat its patients.

Dr James added, “Running out of medicine could be life threatening. If government fails to stock our hospitals, it is literally putting people’s lives at risk. It cannot be ignored. I will, together with other DA colleagues be conducting a national ‘stock-in’ campaign, to systematically conduct oversight of health facilities in every province over the next three weeks. We will try to assist all health facilities that are struggling to get the medicines they need.”

In August this year the PE Express reported shocking allegations by a local Reverend and several former Livingstone hospital patients who took to social media in an attempt to expose the alleged horrific conditions at the hospital.

Rev. Michael Hutchinson created the Facebook page “STOP Livingstone Hospital Medical Negligence” which has received over 2 300 followers after the death of his uncle due to what Hutchinson claimed was the hospital’s negligence.

On this Facebook page many others have lambasted the hospital claiming that patients are turned away at will, exposed to used needles and bloodied medication lying around, incompetent staff and shortages in medical supplies.

MCC Director, Estelle Taute said that she was not aware of any shortfall in medication at the hospital, saying, “We regulate medicine and we have nothing to do with the distribution or tender process. I have no idea about any issues pertaining to the hospital.”

ANC and DA say there were lessons learnt in by­election NCEBA DLADLA THERE were lessons learnt in the Local Government By-elections that took place in Nelson Mandela Bay’s Wards 42 and 46 last week.

In Ward 42, where an independent candidate Andile Gqabi beat the ruling ANC, “it was an unmistakeble sign that the party (ANC) is not bigger than the people,” said DA Provincial leader Athol Trollip.

Trollip, a Member of Parliament Legislature, was talking about the issue of Cllr Gqabi who was fired by the ANC for refusing to resign the position after it was allegedly discovered by a member of the NEC, Nkosana Dlamini-Zuma, that his nomination before the

2011 election was flawed.

Gqabi refused to resign and instead, on the advice of residents, decided to contest the byelection as an independent.

“The lesson here is that the political party must listen to the people. It’s saying the ANC can no longer use the electorate as a voting fodder. People are angry and they are showing it,” said Trollip, adding that this was also showing that the face of the local government was gradually changing - meaning that the ANC will not govern until “Christ returns”.

“The ANC was disappointed by our performance in the by-election. It is clear that we underestimated Gqabi. He is more popular than the ANC preferred candidate, Mazwi Mini,” said ANC Regional Secretary Zandisile Qupe.

“However,” continued Qupe, “we were not defeated by the opposition. It was just an ANC vote split between Gqabi and Mazwi,” said Qupe, adding that Gqabi, as an individual, would still have no influence in council.

“Decisions in council are taken by the ma-

jority. It’s still our responsibility then to go out to the electorate and service them. We’ll make use of the PR Councillor to take care of the peoples’ needs in the Ward,” said Qupe.

Attempts to speak to Cllr Gqabi were unsucessful.

Vacant land to be identified at Greenbushes for burials REPORTER THE call from the Greenbushes community for a cemetery closer to home received a major boost when the Mayoral Committee, chaired by Mayor Benson Fihla, approved a recommendation that vacant land must be identified for burials, according to the municipality.

This decision followed after complaints that burial lots are too far from them since Walmer, Motherwell and Bethelsdorp are the only current options available to bury loved ones.

Lindile Petuna, Executive Director of Human Settlements, was tasked at the committee meeting last week to identify the vacant land within the proximity of the Greenbushes community and to start with

the rezoning process so that the land can be used for burial purposes.

A recommendation that the Acting Executive Director of Public Health formulates a master plan for cemeteries and parks for Nelson Mandela Bay was also approved.

Triomf Primary pupil accepted at Oprah school LIZEKA TANDWA IT’S exciting times for an Arcadia family as their child was chosen to attend the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls on a full scholarship.

Abigail Jacobs is floating on cloud nine (as she puts it) at the prospect that she will be attending one of the most prestige schools in the country, funded by international icon Oprah Winfrey.

Jacobs, who is currently a Grade 5 pupil at Triomf Primary School, will be leaving for Henleyon-Klip, south of Johannesburg, where the school is located, in January next year.

“I couldn’t believe it when my mother received a letter of acceptance. It is an amazing op-

portunity for me. I have always wanted to attend a ‘Model C’ school and I am happy that I will be able to explore my full potential at the school.”

Jacobs first learnt about the scholarship from her aunt who had visited the school earlier this year and informed her mother.

“My aunt said she knew that this would be an amazing opportunity for me and she insisted that I apply.”

Jacobs’ mother, Griselle, said her child’s acceptance to the school came at a time when she had been retrenched from her job, and with only one income from her husband David, it would have been a struggle to enrol their daughter into a multiracial school.

“This means that not only will my child receive the best education in the country and open doors for her in the future but it’s also a huge weight lifted from our shoulders. Because her school life will be fully paid for, we now can concentrate on saving for her university fees and this will be a great help for us as the family,” said Griselle.

Jacobs, who has received a number of awards while attending Triomf, said she owed her accomplishments to her teachers.

“My school has been amazing.

The teachers are dedicated and because of the work we do at my school, I was able to pass all the admission tests with no challenge,” she added.

KwaNobuhle volunteers trained in home­based care receive certificates NCEBA DLADLA VOLUNTEERS belonging to the Mother’s Gift, a non-profit-making organisation (NPO) in KwaNobuhle have been awarded certificates after receiving a week long training in various skills last week.

The 30 volunteers were trained in Home-based care (caring for people suffering from chronic diseases like HIV/Aids, TB, cancer, high blood pressure, heart failure and other serious ailments) under the auspices of Community Chest.

The certification ceremony was held at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall last Friday.

The training was done by retired professional nurse Mama Lizeka Mahonga and the volunteers will now be working with the communities as well as assisting in local community clinics.

Lumkwana for making the funding available and facilitating the training.

“This is exactly what we are here for.

Our core-business is to mobilise resources for poverty alleviation, health and education,” said Lumkwana.

According to Lumkwana, TB and HIV/ Aids are serious diseases with patients needing to be taken care of by professionals and, in this case, trained and equipped volunteers.

“We made sure that the volunteers were equipped in the right way,” said Lumkwana.

Mama Sheila said she was encouraged by the volunteers who, though they themselves had nothing, were prepared to give their all to ensure that poor people of KwaNobuhle were being taken care off.

“Apart from serving the sick people soup and bread at the Mother’s Gift and to those who couldn’t walk, at their homes, the volunteers are assisting at the clinics in Mabandla Street, Silver Town and Letitia Bam hospital,” said Mama Sheila.

ALGOA FM has partnered with its weekend lunch presenter Tové Kane to open the School of Broadcasting in the Eastern Cape.

“Some 25 years in the radio industry and related fields have given Tové an edge in understanding the art of communicating,” said Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann.

“When we realised that Tové had extensive experience as a trainer in addition to her broadcasting skills, we saw it as an opportunity to open a professional broadcasting school in the Eastern Cape.”

Kane graduated from Rhodes University in 1992, worked at Talk Radio 702 in 1992 and served as the Breakfast Jock at Smart FM in 1994 and as a sports anchor on Talk Radio 702.

She worked as a presenter on 94.7 Highveld Stereo from 1996-2006, and won the Crystal Award for Best Radio DJ. Her career includes working on Jacaranda FM between 2006 and 2009 and again in 2010, after which she joined Talk Radio 702 to present Solid It will consist of 10 interactive two-hour sessions hosted in the Algoa FM studios Gold.

The ECYC is made up of school going children from Nelson Mandela Bay and surround-

ing areas including Grahamstown in the Makana Local Municipality.

“We are taking choristers for the 2015 Eastern Cape Youth Choir,” said ECYC Conductor Petrus Meyer, adding that auditions are open to boys and girls who are Grade 7 - 12 learners.

A fee of R50 will be paid for auditions.

The auditions will be held from 12 noon until 3pm.

He said, “The hopefuls should prepare one a capella (without accompaniment) piece for the audition.”

Changing children’s lives – one book at a time REPORTER AFTER a year of fundraising, Varsity College Port Elizabeth will open a mobile library and media centre at Heatherbank Primary School tomorrow, November 13.

The school, which is an NPO for underprivileged children from the Walmer Township, will receive the library as part of Varsity College’s 2014 Corporate Social Initiative.

Heatherbank Primary School currently educates, feeds and transports 48 children daily.

Vice Principal of Student Support at Varsity College Port Elizabeth, Catherine Louw, said, “An exciting year of fundraising in collaboration with the Masixhasane Literacy Project has enabled us to provide Heatherbank Primary School with a mobile library unit. Fundraising initiatives both on and off the Varsity College campus were held in order to provide the school with the library unit which contains five hundred books, a flat screen TV, DVD player and twenty five educational videos.”

The learners at Heatherbank Primary range between the ages of three and six and all of the resources mentioned above will be age appropriate. “Varsity College, in collaboration with the Masixhasane Literacy Project, is committed to eradicating illiteracies within SA as we strongly believe that through education communities can be uplifted with one child at a time. This has been a fulfilling adventure

which needed the support and commitment of many people in order to be a success,” said Louw.

Varsity College said the highlight of their fundraising initiatives was a successful comedy show, ‘Whole Lotta Laughs’ which was presented by Centrestage and featured the popular comedian Gino Fabbri with his side kick Alida Senekal. All who supported this event contributed to raising funds to provide Heatherbank with the mobile library unit.

A mobile library unit and media centre will be opened at Heatherbank Primary School tomorrow as part of Varsity College Port Elizabeth’s 2014, Corporate Social Initiative.

Annual Ebubeleni Music Festival is back REPORTER THE third Annual Ebubeleni Music Festival is back with yet another mouth watering line up.

With this year’s theme “Celebrating 20 Years of Freedom and Democracy through Music”, the event promises to give the Bay revellers the best they have ever seen.

Taking place on the December 27 at Adcock Stadium, Ebubeleni Music Festival is ideally positioned during the festive season on the last Saturday of December.

Organisers said the event is meant as a homecoming for the people of the Bay, and as a yearly get-together affair for those who work and/or study in different parts of the country. Those that are not from Nelson Mandela Bay are encouraged to embrace the event as part of the reason to holiday and spend part of their Xmas Holidays in the friendly city.

The festival forms part of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Annual Summer Season Programme which starts from December 16, until New Year’s Day. Other sponsors include the National Department of Arts and Culture’s Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) with its vision that goes beyond social cohesion. MGE believes that arts, culture and heritage play a pivotal role in the economic self-determination and skills development of people.

The economic benefits of the festival for the Bay are that all servic-

ZAFA Year End Function held to honour teams and individuals SELBY MADIKANE ZAKHELE Football Association honoured the outstanding teams and individuals during its End of the Season Annual Awards Function held at Nangoza Jebe Hall on Friday.

Speaking to the attendees, SAFA NMB President Monde Mhletywa emphasized that “success comes after hard work”. Mhletywa stated that efficient and sound management was tantamount to the smooth running of the local football association.

Mhletywa further urged ZAFA clubs to support their leadership so that they could reap good fruits. Mhletywa said, “The key factor in any organisation is co-operation and efficient management. The ZAFA executive committee members need clubs’ support in order to deliver good services for the clubs. I want to commend ZAFA for holding this function with the objective of motivating the teams after a season’s long journey.”
