Jazz diva mourned

NCEBA DLADLA

P

ORT Elizabeth Jazz Diva Nomzamo Mkhuzo (78) has died.

The lady of soul whose voice captivated thousands of music lovers for more almost six decades, both as a solo artist and member of a group, is no more. “Our aunt became very sick last Wednesday. We were shocked because she was always a lively and joyful person despite her suffering from diabetes. We rushed her to Dora Nginza hospital where she was admitted and breathed her last breath on Saturday,” said Nomzamo’s niece Nozuko Mbopa. According to Mbopa, Mama Mkhuzo celebrated her birthday with family on 23 May. She ate her cake and sang. Little did they know that it was her last with them. Mama Mkhuzo lived in Gqomose Street, Zwide. Her passing has left a void in the music fraternity, especially jazz. “We’ve lost a great musician whose artistry was never really appreciated. She was

a good singer and composer, but was never recognised,” said saxophonist Patrick Pasha who sang with Mama Nomzamo. Mama Nomzamo’s band member and friend Vuyelwa-Qwesha Luzipho, also a diva, described Mama Mkhuzo as some-one who was always smiling and whose voice resembled that of the US diva Ella Fitzgerald. “Like me, she was brought up in a singing family and was married to another musician, her late husband, Jamani “JJ” Skweyana, a guitarist with whom she sang, recorded and toured South Africa.” Qwesha-Luzipho said they formed Metro Jazz Queens aka The Jazz Divas with Nomzamo, Dineo Lebakeng, Welekazi Mosia and later were joined by Thandeka Marwanqa and sang jazz to entertain Nelson Mandela Bay music lovers. “We enjoyed singing together and we complemented and supported one another – unlike today’s artists who pride themselves on competing with one another,” said Qwesha-Luzipho. She added that Mama Mkhuzo loved people and enjoyed singing even if there was no payment at the end. Being a family of musicians, mama Mkhuzo taught her children music. Before Sindiswa, Nkululeko and Monde passed on, they also sang with her especially some of her compositions, said QweshaLuzipho. Reverend Pasha agreed, “We believe Umhlobo Wenene FM does have some of her compositions.” A memorial service for mama Mkhuzo is planned for sometime next week. Nozuko Mbopa said the family will lay mama Mkhuzo to rest after a funeral service scheduled to take place at St Peter’s Anglican Church near Loyiso High School in Zwide Township on Saturday 25 June. It starts at 9am. Mama Mkhuzo leaves behind three grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Teachers initiative to improve maths results REPORTER IN a bid to boost maths results throughout the Eastern Cape, a group of academically top-performing Grade 10, 11 and 12 maths teachers, all from disadvantaged schools, have been selected to mentor and assist other teachers in their districts, and also help with structured exam revision. A total of 150 teachers identified as “lead mathematics teachers” in the province have just completed four days of training through a programme jointly run by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Unit (GMMDU) and the Department of Basic Education. Training took place at the Coega Village Conference Centre in Port Elizabeth – and a further four days of training are planned for later this year. “In each of the 23 basic education districts of the Eastern Cape, a number of teachers have been identified to assist their colleagues at underperforming schools,” said GMMDU head Professor Werner Olivier. “We want to empower a cohort of selected in-service maths teachers to turn around the achievement of mathematics outcomes in the province. “The lead teachers will share resources, boost content and encourage teachers to get involved in various extracurricular classes, like winter school programmes, while also using innovative digital teaching and learning resources that have been developed by GMMDU.” Duma Ncanywa, the department’s chief director: skills development, said the lead teachers would work closely with district subject advisers. “In the coming years, the department will also be setting up similar support structures, including the establishment of professional learning centres, for Grade 7 to 9 maths teachers, to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in these grades.” Cecil Heradien, subject adviser for mathematics (FET level): Port Elizabeth district,

A group of 150 top-performing maths teachers from disadvantaged high schools across the province attend training, equipping them to be “lead mathematics teachers”, who will be able to assist and mentor other maths teachers. Co-leading the initiative are (in the middle of the group) Prof Werner Olivier, head of the Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Unit (GMMDU) at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, and (to his left) Duma Ncanywa, the Department of Basic Education’s chief director: skills development. PHOTOS:SUPPLIED said the Eastern Cape’s lead teacher initiative – the only such initiative in the country – would greatly benefit both teachers and learners. “It will help teachers become more confident in teaching curriculum content to learners.” As the only maths subject adviser in the Port Elizabeth district, Heradien oversees about 200 maths teachers at 80 high schools – which makes it difficult to provide individualised support. Lead teachers will now be able to form small cluster groups with their peers, which will address this challenge. He said the project would also expose more teachers to using technology in their classrooms.

“Not only will it save time (drawing sketches), but it will also help learners to better visualise the concepts.” GMMDU has run accredited mathematics content and skills upgrade programmes (Mathsup) for more than 700 Eastern Cape teachers over the past three years, and the lead teachers have been hand-picked as those who performed at distinction level, within this group. Each of the teachers who attend Mathsup receives a laptop with GMMDU’s innovative technology-linked teaching and learning programme (packaged as TouchTutorTM), which has been developed in line with modern learners’ learning requirements. It is used not just to boost their own understanding of the maths curriculum, but also

Professor Werner Olivier.

as a teaching resource to be used in the classroom. TouchTutor includes video lessons, interactive PowerPoint presentations, assessment (with feedback), language support and a host of other digital features, fully aligned with the Grade 10 to 12 syllabus. It offers the same for physical science teachers. GMMDU runs Mathsup in parallel with its flagship incubator programme for selected learners with potential, where learners receive TouchTutor on a tablet, which they can use after school hours as a “personal tutor”. There is also a desktop model – which includes TouchTutor on PCs – which has been introduced at more than 100 schools in the Eastern Cape to assist learners outside of the incubation programme.

Prayer service for sport legends to be held NCEBA DLADLA A PRAYER service in honour of the retired sportsmen and women of Nelson Mandela Bay will be held at St Stephen’s Anglican Church in Grattan Street, New Brighton, this Sunday, June 19, at 9am. The service is held on Father’s Day to give thanks for the ability of the legends, who are by far mostly fathers, to come together to revive sport in the townships, said Mandela Bay Sport Legends committee spokesman Stan Mosia. Mosia thanked St Stephen’s for agreeing to the use of its facility. He said they had agreed in unanimously as a committee that the church was central, had the capacity to host large numbers and saw their mission and vision. According to Mosia, legends membership is open to all sports stars of yesteryear who were 50 years old and above, whether they had participated as athletes, coaches or administrators. Currently their membership is predominantly made up of sports heroes and heroines from the townships of Nelson Mandela Bay. According to Mosia, the service is aimed at giving blessings to the revived structure

whose primary responsibility is to unite Bay legends to revive sport in the townships and cut down on drug and alcohol abuse through mass participation of the youth. “We have decided to bring together all former sporting greats from various codes in order to contribute towards existing sport development programmes in our areas,” said Mandela Bay Sports Legends chairperson Themba Ludwaba. Ludwaba added that they were opening the invitation to all other sportsmen and women who might not have heard about their existence. Mosia said that, among other things, they visited and gave support to ailing sports heroes of yore, letting them know they were not alone. He said they would also pray for them and ask God to give them strength. Mosia urged those with sports blazers to wear them. He said MPL Sugar Makina and Buffalo City-based Safa NEC member Zola “Wajima” Dunywa would also be present with guests from the spheres of politics, business and education. Mosia said former Bafana Bafana manager Dunywa was happy to take the idea of legends coming together to revive sport right across the province.

Four suspects nabbed for armed robbery NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth police arrested four suspects in connection with armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms and possession of suspected stolen property last Friday. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the suspects were between 23 and 29 years old.

Police recovered a firearm, a hijacked vehicle and stolen property. It is alleged that at about 6am on Friday a 30-year-old complainant was walking in Leyland Street, North End, when a white BMW passed him by. The vehicle then turned around and stopped next to the man and one suspect pointed a firearm at him while two more armed suspects got out of the vehicle and

took his laptop bag and cellphone. Mount Road crime prevention unit members circulated information about the vehicle involved in the robbery. At about 8am, members of the PE Flying Squad spotted a similar vehicle in the Deal Party area with four occupants inside. They followed, stopped the vehicle and searched it. “The members recovered a firearm and

further investigation revealed that the vehicle was positively linked to a hijacking in Algoa Park last week,” Janse van Rensburg said. The suspects were questioned and the house of one of the suspects was searched and the stolen laptop and cellphone belonging to the complainant was recovered. The suspects are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court soon.

Evening of inspiration for women HEILIE COMBRINCK

“She may have scars and bruises, but she

continues to present a smile on her face. She might have had a difficult time growing-up, hurt in a relationship, a single mother, emotionally in pain, yet she continues to be a woman of strength.”

With these words printed on invitation cards to a Women Enrichment Evening, women from all spheres are encouraged to attend the event. It is organised by Nonzwanga (Sylvia) Thisani, a former educator and now local businesswoman, caterer and owner of Rainbow Guest House & Tours. The aim of the event is to have speakers from different areas to motivate, assist, empower and refresh women to be the best they can be in our society. “Women have the potential of changing our society for the better. Women can influence youth to be better and responsible citizens. Women can set high performance standards in the work area,” said Nonzwanga. “Some of us as women had very rough upbringings, some rough relationships with family, colleagues or partners. “We are supposed to raise kids, nurture them and instil values and norms in their lives, excel in our roles as mothers, sisters and wives. “This evening is meant to inject some motivation, empowerment and appraisal for what women have managed to do and encourage the ones that have thrown in the towel to get up and continue with the journey of purposeful living. “I come from a broken family. It was not easy. My mother was not educated, but she taught me to be an entrepreneur,” said Nonzwanga. “She supported not only her children, but

also her community by knitting jerseys, making dresses, and selling fruit and food.” Nonzwanga said a person’s past follows you. Therefore it is best to address circumstances and situations affecting you negatively and focus on embracing the good. “Emotions have a tendency to build-up in us. When confronted with an incident related to your past, one often emotionally over-react. “Most of us are displacing emotions. If you are hurt by your partner, or by someone you love of someone at work, you often hurt someone else out of pure frustration. And this is exactly what is killing a nation. “Life taught me hard lessons. I have learnt about forgiveness and righteousness. “I am now stronger than my past - and it is time to give back to fellow women. This function is also to thank God, our Creator for His grace.” The programme include performances by African Drumbeat who will play marimba instruments during the arrival of guests as well as during the programme. Pastor Hlungulu from the Assemblies of God in Langa will handle the opening where-after the guest speakers will take to the stage. Topics will include women in business, abusive situations, teenagers and drugs. The key speaker will be Vuyo Lekhelebana, a counselling psychologist. The Women Enrichment evening will be held on Friday, July 8th at 17:30 for 18:00 in the Uitenhage Town Hall. The dress code is smart casual to formal. Tickets are R180 and available at Rainbow Guest House. )For more information call 041 966 2310, 083 594 9310 or e-mail thisani@lantic.net

Woman arrested for possession of drugs A 40-YEAR-OLD Port Elizabeth woman was arrested and police confiscated 1 950 Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R97 500 as well as a large amount of cash last Thursday night. Performing Operation Lockdown duties, the members of the intervention team had successfully executed a search warrant at a house in Tshangisa Street, KwaNoxolo, Bethelsdorp, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon. “Good community policing includes eradicating the sale of drugs

as well as arresting and charging major drug lords,” Naidu said, adding that the police were committed to closing all avenues for drug dealers and syndicates. “The SAPS continues on a mission to root out the illicit trade of drugs in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth,” cluster commander Major-General Dawie Rabie said. “We shall ensure that these criminals have no safe havens.” He urged members of the community to continue providing tipoffs to the police in order to make their neighbourhoods safer. – NCEBA DLADLA

able and the need to advance the arts. More than 100 prospective performers attended the two-round auditions held around the metro and about 30 finalists were identified. Ngonyama mentioned, however, that there were concerns that the timing in December had not been good owing to some hopefuls writing examinations and being unable to attend auditions. “We then decided to have a mop-up soon to check whether we haven’t left some of the stars behind,” he said. He was certain, however, that the talent they had identified so far would stamp its authority on show-business in the not-too-distant future. “So far, we are very excited with what we have,” he said. This development of arts was part of the creative economy the Arts Council had sold to mayor Danny Jordaan as part of the nine-point plan investment strategy, he said.

YOUNG people in Nelson Mandela Bay should brace themselves for a cultural festival the likes of which have never seen in the city before.

KMG’s unique hip-hop spaza on show NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth dudes Simpiwe Gadla, Chumani Ngolonzi and Phumelela Matika, who call themselves KMG, a group singing hiphop (spaza flavours) will present a show at Daku Hall, Kwazakhele this Youth Day, Thursday, June 16. Admission to the show is R10. The group, from Kwazakhele, will appear on BayTV’s “Big I Up” starting at 4pm to promote their music. Formed in 2012 by two members, GeeMusic and Mr Blue, KMG aims to deliver good music to entertain

the crowds and pass a message to inspire people, said Gadla. Last year they had been joined by Kingprince and had an opportunity to open for hip-hop star Ricky Rick in Durban. GeeMusic said, “The KMG trio is known and respected in the community and our special project with the hit song, Jaiva, is making waves. We are getting positive feedback from the crowds wherever we perform.” According to GeeMusic, KMG’s rinks (meaning lyrics) speak kasi (location) lingo which the majority of their audiences, especially the youth, understand. Asked what was different from

their hip-hop and other hip-hop currently in circulation, Gadla said,: “Ours is a mixture of Skhanda and cramp.” He said it was produced by Mr Blue. He said their message was clear. They talked about issues people knew about as they sang about township stories. GeeMusic (Gadla), Kingprince (Ngolonzi) and Mr Blue (Matika) say they have arrived with the release of their first complete independent project after finishing a demo at Zonke Bonke studios in Motherwell. “We are now pushing an 18-song mixtape which is available on MP3 and our Facebook Page: kmghayikwamagxaki.

This is according to Mandela Bay Arts Council chairperson Monde Ngonyama. The Nelson Mandela Bay Cultural Festival is scheduled to take place at the Port Elizabeth Opera House from July 27 to 30. Ngonyama, who is also the Opera House general manager, said in assisting the development of arts and crafts they had started with checking the amount of talent available. This, he said, was based on the premise that: “To develop talent, you don’t assume depth of talent or lack thereof, you have to start somewhere and on our part we started with the talent showcase in December.” This had been aimed at determining the amount of skill avail-

Sifiso Nene brings Baby Mama Drama to the Bay REPORTER POPULAR South African comedian, Sifiso Nene, brings his outrageously successful “Baby Mama Drama” tour to Port Elizabeth this month. The comedian, who was the first winner of So You Think You are Funny in 2009, has been packing out venues across the country with the show which is his first one man production. “Baby Mama Drama” is based on a strong observation made about single parenting issues. A casualty of single parenting himself, Nene’s aim is to change the perception that parents are monsters. Touching on some sensitive issues and featuring stories from his own youth, told with his char-

acteristic humour, Nene will have his audience rolling on the floor laughing. Nene has come a long way since his humble beginnings in Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal. Since winning So You Think You are Funny, he has won several awards including the Satmas for the Best Indigenous Comedian as well as two Comics Choice Awards which are voted for by the audience. In addition to travelling the country making people laugh, he has also made a few television appearances and acted in David Kau’s comedy film Taxi Ride in 2012. “Baby Mama Drama” will be held at the Boardwalk’s amphitheatre at 8:30pm on June 25. Tickets cost R120 per person at Computicket.

Young leader organises youth conference ONE of six children born to poor but loving parents in the town of Mokopane in rural Limpopo, John Rammutla, knows what it is like to grow up in difficult circumstances – but has never allowed this to hold him back. The newly-qualified civil engineer, who is a Project Manager in Training at SANRAL, believes the youth of South Africa can bring about the change this country needs – and he is starting with himself. John (23) has just organised the second SANRAL-supported South African Youth Leadership Conference, in partnership with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University student association, Believers Love World (BLW), to inspire the youth to contribute to socio-economic development in South Africa. The conference, held at NMMU on May 23, was attended by nearly 500 Grade 12 learners from three township schools in Port Elizabeth and 130 NMMU students and working professionals, including SANRAL employees. The conference was also livestreamed to three other universities in the Eastern Cape – Fort Hare,

Walter Sisulu and Rhodes. It followed the highly successful inaugural conference he ran earlier this year in Limpopo, for 1300 university students and learners. “I’m really passionate about South Africa and its development. As a nation, we have so much potential and talent. Someone has to go out there and exploit that talent and inspire people to act. This is my contribution – to inspire others to see themselves as critical instruments in bringing about social and economic development in South Africa.” John believes there are two main issues affecting South Africa’s youth. The first is unemployment, and the second is alcohol and drug abuse. And it is these problems that lead to the majority of the country’s social problems, including rape, robbery and violent crimes. Instead of looking to government for solutions, John believes young people should see what they can do, by becoming business or social entrepreneurs. “I encourage the learners to start non-profit organisations (NPOs) to improve the lives of others. I encour-

age them to start their own businesses, to create jobs, and I give them the support they need to do this. Whether you are 16, 17, 19 or 20, you can start a business.” Regarding the problem of alcohol and drug abuse, John said young people should set up organisations to help their peers. “It’s easier for a young person to listen to another young person. It’s more impactful than listening to a politician and the chances of success are greater.” John said a lack of resources and being over-burdened by responsibilities were often used by the youth as excuses for apathy – but he believes they can achieve despite this, just as he did. John himself has been a social entrepreneur since school. With a flair for maths and science, he and some classmates used to tutor learners from other schools, due to the shortage of maths and science teachers in the area. “In Grade 11, we were tutoring Grade 12 learners. That’s how passionate we were.” Once they matriculated and went to university – John with a full bursary from SANRAL – the group

wanted to continue to make a difference to Limpopo learners. So they started an NPO called “Enlighters Edu-Solutions” and they expanded it to include career exhibitions. It continues to run to date. This year, John started a second NPO, Hi-Africa, for the purpose of empowering the youth through national conferences and summits. His long-term vision is to run these events across Africa. He is “truly, truly grateful” to work for a company that is deeply committed to developing communities and leaders, and encourages its employees to do the same. “SANRAL is wonderful. Allowing me to run this project and by sponsoring the events, shows SANRAL’s commitment towards nation building.” John said what kept him going was his deep faith, those who support and mentor him and his passion to see the country’s youth mobilised to make a difference. “You have to be passionate about what you do, and you have to be committed – then you’ll know what to do. You’ll get ideas and you’ll be inspired to act on them.” – REPORTER

ENTERTAINMENT

New Age events exposes new Bay talent NCEBA DLADLA THE New Age Events company will present the third instalment of its Millennium Friday Show sponsored by Red Bull at the KwaDwesi Stadium on July 1. New Age Events, which caters for sports, arts and cultural events, including fashion designing and tourism in the township, intends to go big with this event, according to co-founder Masixole Ngesi. Masi, as Ngesi is affectionately known, said he and his co-founding colleague, Sihle Mabindisa, had started the company in January because of their love for sports, arts and culture. Their events are held monthly to ensure that new artists get a platform to showcase their talents each month. “We were also concerned by the number of local artists who do not necessarily benefit from their creativity because of a lack of opportunities in the city,” he said. This platform, they believed, would ensure that local artists did in fact practise their arts and be paid for doing so. “We are doing this for the artists, some

of whom were breadwinners at home and who because of a lack of such events would be despondent and resort to wayward behaviour like doing drugs and crime, Ngesi said. They were hoping that with this platform the artists’ talents would be exposed to larger communities for support and possibly to talent scouts who would identify and open doors for them. Ngesi said he believed New Age was creating an opportunity for musicians, poets, artists and fashion designers to shine. Fans will be able to vote for the Best Performance of the Show, with the winner taking home R1 000 in prize money, Ngesi said. The show starts at 2pm and admission is R10.

Kilambe kills his former team Peace Lovers

SELBY MADIKANE

PHUMZILE Kilambe Mathumbu silenced the supporters of his former side Peace Lovers when he scored an odd goal for Young Teenagers against them during their PEEFA Premier League game at KwaDwesi Community Grounds on Sunday. The game was balanced with each side searching for an opening goal. Lots of golden opportunities were missed by the two sides. The match officials had to put in extra effort as it was a fast-paced game which produced plenty of fireworks. The supporters of these sides kept on singing – which motivated the players to fight bravely. Teenagers’ fans were sent into raptures when Mathumbu came up with a long-awaited goal late in the second half. United Brothers devastated their neigh-

bours Crystal City with a 2-0 win. Real Lion salvaged a comfortable 2-0 win over Hillside. Young Idols humiliated PEEFA Premier League’s oldest side Real Aces 9-5. Aces were one of the PEEFA sides who had a rich history. To the dismay of fans, the Young Bucks vs Sophakama game was regarded as a dead game as both sides did not turn up. Eleven Attackers fails to reply SELBY MADIKANE ELEVEN Attackers could not even score a consolation goal when they were humiliated in their two SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Women’s Regional League games at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Sunday.

Following their dismal performance this season, Nobuhle Ladies drubbed Attackers 12-0 in a one-sided game. Attackers seemed to have lost confidence in them as the high-riding Highbury Ladies whacked them 18-0. As things stand, Attackers conceded 30 goals in their double-header. So far Attackers are one of the sides in the regional league who have conceded the most goals. Kuyga Ladies, who are the newcomers in the regional league, keep on losing all their games. They were drubbed 6-0 by

KUBS in their first game. Despite putting up a good fight they lost 2-0 to NMMU Madibaz in their second game. Madibaz showed their good fighting spirit when they won their second clash 4-0 over Vuku Wanderers. Continental Express also had a good weekend after they won their two games. Express defeated Bodene Shatterprufe 2-0 and they embarrassed Zwide All Stars 4-0. Tomorrow Stars managed to win 5-0 over PE United and they lost 2-0 to KUBS. Golden Aces are on top of ZWIFA Ntando Premier League SELBY MADIKANE FOLLOWING their 2-0 win over Major Chiefs on Saturday, Golden Aces are the ZWIFA Ntando Tours and Transport Premier League’s new log leaders. Aces came to the game level with 29 points with Zwide Pirates. Pirates’ party was spoiled by Kuyasa United who held them to a 1-1 draw.

If Aces could win all its remaining games, they might take the honours for the first time in their history in ZWIFA. The supporters of Manchester City were let down by their side after it was hammered 8-1 by their neighbours Gal City. The much-improved Camper United secured a well-deserved 4-2 win over Morning Stars. Shooting Stars beat Young Killers 2-0 while Real Crusaders thwarted Zwide Celtics 5-1. Shooting Stars shared a 1-1 draw with Sophakama. Strikers United also had a 1-1 draw against Swartkops United. ZWIFA First Division results:

Golden Aces are new log leaders.

Sasol League Coastal Stream Ladies results SELBY MADIKANE SASOL League Coastal Stream Ladies games took place recently with some sides losing crucial games in their bid to maintain their league status. In the battle of the Nelson Mandela Bay sides, Manchester Babes shared a 1-1 draw with Mustangs Ladies at Jabavu Stadium in KwaNobuhle. University of Fort Hare gave a good account of themselves despite succumbing 2-0 to Birmingham City Ladies in front of their home supporters in Alice.

Golden Stars could not shine over Thunderbirds Ladies who thumped them 8-0 at Gelvan Fields. City Lads who had been campaigning for a long time in the Sasol Ladies League gave the newcomers Sophakama Ladies a baptismal of fire when they handed them a 4-0 defeat at Chevrolet stadium.

Lungisa Jikani faces Warren Joubert for SA Jnr Welterweight championship NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth’s Lungisa Jikani will fight Gauteng’s Warren Joubert over 12 rounds in a fight for the latter’s South African championship at Emperor’s Palace, Kempton Park, next Friday 24 June, The two fighters will be locking horns for the second time after Joubert whose known by the mon-

iker “The Warrior” won the last fight for the then vacant title in April 2015. Joubert lost the title to Grant Fourie in his first defence a few months later. He then beat Jason Bedeman on points and called Fourie for a rematch in a contest that included the WBA Pan African Super Lightweight title in March this year. Joubert (with 33 fights, 24 wins, 11 by way of Knock Out, four losses

and five stalemates) reclaimed the SA title after a hard fought 12 rounds against his nemesis. As things stand, the Eastern Cape Junior Welterweight champion Jikani, alias Naughty, remains the mandatory challenger for the title. This is after he fought a drawn battle against Asanda Jacobs of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage. “The boy (Jikani) is ready. Unlike the first fight, where we still believe we were given a raw deal.

Jikani is well prepared this time around,” said Jikani’s mentor Caiphus Ntante of Walmer “We’ll go there and bring the title home, whether it is on points or a Knock Out,” said Ntante. Ntante’s camp remains the only one in Nelson Mandela Bay to hold a championship belt. His mini-flyweight charge Siphosethu “The Gift” Ncisana holds the WBF international title while newly crowned Nozipho Bell won the SA

Female Junior Lightweight title. “Joubert will not see what hit him. Jikani is hungry for success and after being motivated by his stablemates – who are champions – he sees winning this title very key for his club and Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Ntante. He said Naughty had good sparring from the likes of Lesley Hope (EC Light heavyweight champion) and the star Lightweight pugilist Anele Msimang.
