Welcome to the 3rd Annual Wilkie Charolais Bull Sale! A huge thank you goes out to all previous buyers for their support and trust in our program. The bulls are all coming two-year-olds, that have been developed nice and slow. They have been fed a pellet ration for longevity, not for optimal gains. We aim to have a quality product with good disposition, great hair, loads of natural muscle, good feet and legs and as much performance as possible. We have a commercial cow herd as well as the purebred herd, so we want the bulls to work in all environments. We are extremely pleased with this group of bulls and the consistency of each of the sire groups.

Welcome to the Wilkie’s Annual Bull Sale. For decades they have been using Charolais bulls in their commercial operation and for years producing the thick Full French bulls that have worked for their fellow cattlemen. This fall I sat in the Stettler Auction Market and saw how good the French sired crossbred calves looked. Thick topped, lots of rib and good haired. Not only in this market but all the auction markets across the country, we saw a premium paid for the identifiable Charolais calves. If you haven’t been using a Charolais bull, you need to help yourself with added pounds at weaning, a premium price and dollars in your pocket. This is a quality offering with many related bulls that will give you more consistency in your calf crop, if you need multiple bulls. There are also some definite breeder bulls for those wanting to add a top Full French bull to your breeding program.

Birth Weight & Calving Ease

University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65% 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65

or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf with weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weight 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease.

Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

A heavy muscled and big-bodied Bounty son, with lots of performance.

Cowman Formula Increase in pounds per calf from a top-performance bull x number of cows bred to him per year x no of years to keep the bull x expected selling price of calves = Addition dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull who will add 30 lb to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and you sell the calves for $1.50 per pound. 30 x 25 = 750 x 4 = 3000 x 1.50 = $4,500

This bull is worth $4,500 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put your own figures in and see what you can afford to pay. This equation does not consider the increase in value due to calving ease, higher quality replacement heifers, yearling growth, feedlot gain and improved carcass quality.

Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made. Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale. Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final. Announcements: Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are cautioned to pay close attention to announcements. Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. All animals left with the seller must be insured. Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after payment has been made.

Exception Guarantee: In the case where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price. Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale manager, auctioneer, or sellers assume any responsibility and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property. Sale Manager: By Livestock is only acting as a medium between the buyer and seller and is not responsible for failure on the part of either party to live up to their obligations; or for the truth of any warrantees or representations, expressed or implied. By Livestock assumes no obligation to enforce or collect monies between parties. By Livestock assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. The seller has the right and privilege of six months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will freeze.
