Welcome summer with the Summer Solstice Yoga Mala event with live music. The event will feature the ancient yoga tradition of completing 108 sun salutations in alignment with the changing season.

Bring your yoga mat or practice with grass between your toes at this amazing event to celebrate summer! Join us for a blissful Sunday evening with the beautiful Puget Sound as your backdrop for Vinyasa Yoga accompanied by live music by Big Sky Mind and a Sound Bath Meditation.

Come experience yoga outdoors under the backdrop of the Puget Sound, neighboring islands and Olympic Mountains, all while practicing the classic Surya Namaskar series of twelve physical poses linked together by breath. Let’s head to Seattle for a day of discovery. Our first stop will be the seismology lab for a tour on the UW Campus. Get a brief overview of the Plate Tectonic Theory and how those processes have formed the Western margin of North America. Then it’s lunch at Shultzy’s Bar and Grill, a true UW landmark restaurant. After lunch, it’s to the Museum of History and Industry, MOHAI. A place to discover and explore your role and how it helped to shape the future while not forgetting our past. We are heading over the mountains and stepping back in time to visit the quaint town of Toppenish where you will enjoy a tour of the beautiful murals throughout in an old-time horse drawn covered wagon. Don’t miss this adventure to Seattle and tour the FBI building and get a detailed look at the inner workings of this facility. Opened around 1914 under the Leadership of Special Agent in Charge Fred Watt, the office played an important role in the security of WWI. After our tour, we will head to Ivar’s Seafood Restaurant on Seattle’s waterfront. Make sure to bring some extra snacks, money for food, and memorabilia. Join us as we head to Port Townsend and jump on board for a tour of the miniature Kitsap Live Steamers. Organized as a non-profit rideable railroad in January 1990, Kitsap Live Steamers is a must see if you are a train enthusiast or just curious about these little gems. After our tour, we are heading to the Grey House for a late lunch and tea, formerly known as Debbi Macomber’s Victorian Tea Room and Gifts. Make sure to bring money for food, and memorabilia.

Get ready to “Pitch in for Parks”, a volunteer based program offered through a partnership between Pierce County Parks and Recreation and McLendon Hardware. Pitch in for Parks is a great opportunity for all ages and abilities, (ages 15 and under with guardian) to pitch in and help your community. Supplies will be available for use plus a snack and water. Join us “rain or shine” with appropriate clothing for the weather and work gloves. Come with us as we head to Roslyn and reflect on the ethnic mix that settled in the area prior to the turn of the last century. We will travel to 25 separate cemeteries abutting each other on 15+ wooded acres on the Hills of West Roslyn. After we will head to the Famous Brick Saloon for lunch, Washington’s oldest operating saloon, established in 1889. Besides the coal miners and local residents of Roslyn, the saloon was also famous for the TV series Northern Exposure. Then we are on our way to Suncadia Resort which features more than 6,000 acres of forested mountain landscape, sun dappled meadows, and rushing rivers. We will visit the lodge, take in a small hike, and enjoy all that Suncadia has to offer before heading home.

Join us for National Trails Day! We love trails, but they also allow weeds to spread into our natural areas. From the stinky to the spiny come learn how to identify and remove some of our most unwelcome invaders. This is learn by doing volunteer event, so be prepared to weed some trails. Saturday, July 21 Old Settler’s Cemetery Take a step back in time and join us at the Old Settlers Cemetery. With graves dating back to 1795, this lesser known historic site contains some of Lakewood’s earliest settlers and Civil War-era veterans. We’ll be removing ivy infestations and cleaning up around the gravestones. Saturday, August 11 Chambers Creek Canyon Time to do summer cleaning at Chambers Creek Canyon. We’ll hike the trail to do a trash pick-up, pull some weeds, and show this canyon a little love. Outdoor Adventures Orienteering Course at Sprinker Recreation Center Grab your compass and explore Sprinker Recreation Center and Bressman Forest with our new Orienteering Course. Orienteering is a navigation sport with checkpoints prepared on a map. Using only the map and compass to navigate; this is the only way to explore the terrain of your park. The course is designed for all skill levels and is perfect for beginners with 20 control points and is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Maps will be available at Sprinker Recreation Center (253)798-4000 and online in the coming months. North Lake Tapps County Park This popular swimming and boat launch area for families to ‘beat the heat’ during the summer months, is located on the north side of Lake Tapps. A largely undeveloped135 acre site with approximately 10,000 feet of waterfront access including a sandy swimming area. Lake Tapps County Park offers spectacular views of Mount Rainier to the south and is a great place for kids and adults to swim. The park has several amenities including: • • • • • • •

Special Populations Summer Camps

Ready for its fourth summer, Camp Pierce summer day camps are designed for young adults ages 20-30 with disabilities. Six Great Weeks! Monday-Friday from 8 a.m - 3 p.m. Lakewood Community Center Sign up for one week at a time or for all six weeks. Campers will participate in personally enriching activities within the community including volunteering, visiting parks and other organizations, and taking a fun weekly field trip. Celebrating our 47th year in Pierce County, our summer day camp for individuals with disabilities includes: cooperative play, games, arts & crafts, community visitors, sports activities, dress up days, theme weeks, friendships and much more! The program is staffed with school teachers and college students under the supervision of a Special Education Teacher. The activities change daily and are designed to promote sharing, cooperation, friendship, sportsmanship, and fun. Participants receive a camp T-shirt and certificate of participation. Special Populations Summer Programs Pierce County Parks and Recreation proudly offers “Companionship,” a specialized recreation program designed to provide fully inclusive recreational and leisure opportunities for individuals of all abilities and their families. Our goal is to assist the participants in finding and maintaining strong friendships while playing and trying new activities. We accept funding through DSHS/DDA for all special populations programs. Listed below are just a few of our fun events.

Companionship Soccer This fun and introductory program will introduce your child to the awesome game of soccer. This fully inclusive program will teach various kicks, the rules, defense, and most importantly how to score a GOAL! Each week will start with a skills session learning new skills and building on skills learned the week before. Participants should wear shin guards and bring a bottle of water each night. Students build their very own pirate ship, go fishing for treasure, and work together in Kelvin’s crew to create a delicious treat that is more precious than gold. Hop aboard the Green Ghost and set sail as we explore The Engineering of Pirates!

Explore the basic concepts of 3D printing and computer aided design, or CAD, to bring their most awesome Minecraft® creation to life! Students will walk away with a completed 3D model that is ready for 3D printing!

Bricks Eco Super Hero’s Camp Save the earth during the Bricks 4 Kidz Eco Super Hero’s Camp. Build your favorite cape crusaders such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Groot, Rocket Racoon, and many more. Use their super powers to protect our planet from super villains bent on destroying the environment by construction custom contraptions made with Lego bricks and motors.

Summer Science SeaCamp, with Foss Waterway Seaport and Pierce County Parks & Recreation, offers a chance to explore the worlds of the beach and sea in new ways that bring science to life! We will take beach explorations and conduct science tests on what we find. There will also be boat trips and outings to environmentally diverse sites. SeaCamp encourages a personal connection with the marine environment and the life it supports, so that campers learn to love and take care of nature and the environment while exploring, playing and practicing science.

Mining & Crafting in the Minecraft World Experience the world of Minecraft® with LEGO® Bricks in this fun camp. Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine! County Fair Building Party Workshop Join us for a high-energy evening full of LEGO® entertainment as we celebrate the upcoming Pierce County Fair! Construct motorized rides, food stands, ticket booths, and working carnival games using specially-designed model plans and/or your own creative imagination. Join Dance Theatre Northwest for this fun, energetic and intensive 2-week theatre camp designed to encourage and support young theatre enthusiasts. Campers will work daily with professional artists, program administrators, and guest artists receiving insight into the craft of theatre and dance. Campers will also learn about stage presence, acting, drama, dance techniques, movement concepts, choreography, voice, music, and auditioning. Since 1979, Kidz Love Soccer has been dedicated to teaching children the world’s most popular sport within a nurturing, recreational environment.

Companionship Classes Pierce County Parks and Recreation proudly offers “Companionship,” a specialized recreation program designed to provide fully inclusive recreational and leisure opportunities for individuals of all abilities and their families. Guy time at its best! What’s better than hot dogs and games followed by dessert? Participants will meet at the Lakewood Community Center and travel in our new accessible bus to CaskCades, a family friendly arcade and restaurant in Puyallup, where we’ll grub on gourmet hot dogs and soda while playing arcade and board games. Then we’ll take a short walk down to Elements for some tasty froyo and chill time at Pioneer Park. Companionship’s Club Pierce is especially designed for young adults ages 20-30 who have special needs. Participants take part in personally enriching activities within the community including volunteering and visiting other organizations. Tae Kwon Do/Hapkido Learn self control, discipline, respect, and economy of motion while learning martial arts. This martial arts class teaches Olympic style Tae Kwon Do as well as Hapkido (the art of using pressure points and joint locks).
