Meet Samuel, Teen Media Student

“Open Signal has allowed me to explore video and filmmaking ideas that I would not have thought possible to attempt as a teen.” SAMUEL KIDOGUCHI

Starting out with a student crew with our Production Services department, 17-yearold Samuel Kidoguchi has become a part of virtually every Open Signal program available to high school students. He has come back to take writing and technical classes and became certified to use our HD TV studio. Samuel then began volunteering as an assistant teacher for our youth summer camps and joined our after-school program for teens. Why does he come back again and again? “Because of the open, friendly environment,” Samuel says. Open Signal has not only given him the opportunity to work with film genres like documentaries, musical and experimental shorts, it has taught him to feel comfortable collaborating with other media makers and bringing new creative elements into his work. Last summer, our staff selected Samuel to complete a job shadow program with Oregon Film — the state’s department of film and video — where he was able to shadow a camera operator on the set of Portlandia. In fact, with the skills, inspiration and confidence he’s gained with Open Signal, he says he plans to pursue making feature-length films in college and beyond.

OPEN SIGNAL

Meet Chris, Media Trainer

“Community media needs to exist because it’s one of the last frontiers of free speech.” CHRIS FUZELL

As a teacher, Chris Fuzell is most excited about helping people learn to use media tools for the very first time. “I love how people that have never conducted any kind of media production before get so happy,” he says. “The ‘light’ comes on when the puzzle that is production becomes clear.”

SPRING 2017

Back in 2006, Chris joined us as a volunteer because he wanted to learn how the TV shows and films that he watches every day get made. These days, Chris is Open Signal's chief expert on the operations of our

HD production studios. And as a staff instructor, Chris is often the first person a new student comes in contact with, as he teaches Introduction to Video Production and HD Production Studio, a class that gets you certified to use our TV studios. In his own time, Chris’ activist-driven video work addresses community issues that he feels require visibility and conversation. His recent project features six African-American families who were displaced during the expansion of Emanuel Hospital in North Portland in 1970. The work was featured locally as part of the Black Legacy Project History Symposium, a program sponsored by Oregon Humanities. Open Signal's media classes are designed to engage students both creatively and technically and provide bold opportunities to experiment, be challenged and master new skills. “As a teacher, I focus on empowering students to see merit in their stories and to feel connected to their communities.”

Before she became Director of Education at Open Signal, Desiree Montoya was a high school English teacher for more than eight years. Her commitment to the power of bringing media into the classroom began in those days, and she is now able to bring that excitement to other teachers. “Teaching is an incredibly demanding job,” she says. “I like helping teachers realize that integrating media into their lessons is easier than they think.”

At Open School North, Desiree and her team provide intensive media training to teachers, and facilitate deep collaborations between school staff and resident artists, who are professionals in the field.
