I must start out this message with a huge congratulations to the building industry of Polk County for the extension of the moratorium on Impact Fees. The decision to extend the moratorium for 18 months Sean Harper will have a great positive economic impact on this Harper Homes county and is a big step in the right direction from our elected officials. I want to thank the county commission for their wisdom in supporting this extension and supporting the construction industry. Also, a big thank you for members like Mike Hickman, Mark Hulbert and Brian Walsh who spoke publicly at the commission hearings and shared real life scenarios of how the moratorium is responsible for jobs throughout this county.

Issues like Impact Fees are exactly why the PCBA was formed and if there is any doubt about what your membership dollars do for you the impact fee moratorium should alleviate that doubt. Membership is the PCBA lifeblood and we are excited to announce our Get One To Win membership drive. PCBA is kicking off the drive June 22 and it will run through August 31 and our success with Impacts fees is the perfect way to convince a colleague to join our cause. Pat Edleman has all the information and the resource packages that you need to help us with this membership drive so give her a call at 863-665-0844.

The current impact fee moratorium was due to expire on August 1, 2012. At the May Board of County Commissioners Meeting, the Commissioners considered the possibility of extending the moratorium. Michael Flood
A number of contractors and business leaders attended the meeting to present evidence about the effect of the moratorium. Several PCBA members spoke about various projects. A representative from the McDonalds corporation presented evidence about relating to the construction of new restaurants. The evidence presented a clear picture that the moratorium was helping to create jobs and stimulate the economy. The County Commissioners were initially leaning towards extending the moratorium by one year. When it came time to vote, each commissioner spoke briefly about the importance of putting people back to work and encouraging growth during these difficult economic times. In the end, they voted unanimously to extend the moratorium by 18 months. The County Commissioners deserve the thanks of every builder in Polk County for having the foresight to recognize the importance of continuing the moratorium. The people who spoke at the meeting also deserve our thanks, for taking time to present evidence to the Commissioners. The meeting was a perfect example of government and business working together to help turn the local economy around. The impact fee moratorium has now been extended to Feb 1, 2014. That should certainly help several new projects get under way. The Government Affairs Committee meets the 1st Thursday of every month at noon. Please join us for lunch at the next meeting August 2nd.
