Publisher’s Note

Key to the City The Official Vero Beach Handbook is a valuable guide, and in many ways a tribute, to this charming east coast Florida town and its immediate surroundings. We like to think of it as our very own bit of paradise, a small town with an upscale feel and an abundance of natural beauty, cultural events, and outdoor activities readily available. It’s all here, right at your fingertips: the history, the lifestyle, the arts scene, the water, the wildlife, and a warm welcome to everyone who calls Vero Beach home or is considering it. The opening Welcome section is my personal favorite, with all of its fun facts, trivia, and informative data. This little book will be a handy resource for everyday life, with educational and medical listings, government and infrastructure references, and shopping and dining directories. We hope you will enjoy this book as much as we enjoy putting it together. Believe it or not, we at Vero Beach Magazine work all year gathering information to help everyone navigate Vero Beach like a pro. I would like to extend a special thanks to our senior editor, Teresa Rushworth, for all the time and research she puts into this publication every year. We all learn a lot in the process, and we take great joy in sharing this knowledge with all of you. Welcome home!

ho can help me improve my bridge game? What is that wading bird as tall as a kindergartner in my yard? When should I expect my grapefruit tree to

produce fruit? Where can I play pickleball? Why is there a purple flag flying

at the beach? How can I keep my visiting grandchildren entertained? These are just a few of the questions you can answer now that you’re holding Vero Beach Magazine’s 2024 Official Vero Beach Handbook. Whether you are a visitor or a fourth-generation native, there’s no doubt you love Vero Beach and the larger Indian River County community as much as we do. One might say our area offers the best of both worlds, retaining some of the quiet familiarity of small-town life while boasting the vibrant cultural atmosphere usually found in larger cities. A typical day in Vero Beach might include a morning at the beach and an evening at the theater; a morning on the pickleball court and an evening at a fine restaurant; or perhaps a morning volunteering and an evening at a nonprofit organization’s elegant gala. No matter where you are from, how long you have been here, or what your interests are, we are delighted that you have joined us in making the most of life in Vero Beach!

A Place in the Sun “The Sunshine State” is surely one of the best of the 50 state nicknames. (The fact that we’re really only the 10th-sunniest state is a discussion for another time.) The sun boosts our spirits and our vitamin D levels; it brightens up our homes and presides over our favorite outdoor activities. But it also delivers ultraviolet radiation, which can take a toll on our skin, causing premature aging and skin cancer. The key is to use good sun sense. The highest UV levels occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so it’s a good idea to avoid these hours when planning outdoor activities. from. First, educate yourself about the

Eye on the Sky In the absence of the bright lights of big cities, Vero Beach and the surrounding area are wonderful places to view such natural phenomena as meteor showers and close approaches of other planets. Not only that, our proximity to Kennedy Space Center gives us a prime vantage point for viewing rocket launches.

Welcome

Did you know? The Indian River Mosquito Control District, established in 1925, was the first mosquito control program in Florida. A multipronged approach is taken to control the annoying and potentially dangerous insects, including aerial larviciding. If you have been startled by a yellow airplane flying terrifyingly low and performing some rather acrobatic maneuvers, you have probably witnessed aerial mosquito control in action.

The city of Vero Beach celebrated its centennial in 2019. Sebastian will soon enjoy that honor—in 2024, with Indian River County soon to follow in 2025.

Five U.S. presidents have visited Vero Beach: Warren G. Harding (as president-elect), Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush.

It snowed in Vero Beach on January 19, 1977.

efforts until his death in 1943. Victory Boulevard, which runs from 20th Avenue to 27th Avenue through the McAnsh Park neighborhood, was lined with oak trees during World War II as a “living monument honoring the boys in the service” and also given its current name. The original laurel oaks, with a lifespan of just 50 to 70 years, have been replaced gradually with live oaks, which can live for centuries—a fitting tribute to the Greatest Generation. From the southern border of Indian River County up to the Barber Bridge, Highway A1A is the Charles A. Mitchell Memorial Highway, servant who was a state representative in the early 1930s. He died suddenly from a heart attack at age 48 in 1949.

Safety Signals When lifeguards are on duty at public beaches, they hoist color-coded flags that convey important information about current swimming conditions. You will also find a sign near the lifeguard station with a chalkboard on which the lifeguard has written up-todate information such as water temperature and any special conditions. Don’t hesitate to consult the lifeguards with your questions, as they are there to keep everyone safe and informed.

GREEN The coveted green flag indicates calm conditions and a low hazard level. A certain degree of caution is always called for, but if the green flag is flying, you’re probably in for lots of fun in smooth seas.

RED If you see the red flag, you’ll be wise to stay out of the water due to a state of high hazard risk brought on by strong surf and/or rip currents. Don’t take chances; there will be plenty of other times to enjoy the ocean.

YELLOW The commonly seen yellow flag signifies medium hazard due to moderate surf and/or currents. Entering the water is permitted, but extra caution is advised.

DOUBLE RED If two red flags are flying, one atop the other, the lifeguard has closed the water to the public due to extremely hazardous conditions unsuitable for even the strongest swimmers. These hazards include dangerously rough surf, rip currents, or even a shark sighting.

PURPLE Flown along with the green, yellow, or red flag, a purple flag indicates the presence of potentially harmful marine life, such as jellyfish, Portuguese man o’ war, or stingrays.

Sebastian Inlet Cut over a century ago to provide a passageway for boats between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, Sebastian Inlet also facilitates water exchange between the two. It is one of five navigable inlets along the Indian River Lagoon—two natural and three man-made. Sebastian Inlet is a recreational hub. It is part of Sebastian Inlet State Park, which straddles Indian River and Brevard Counties. Established in 1971, the 1,000-acre park draws boaters, anglers, surfers, paddlers, picnickers, and wildlife enthusiasts. The state park includes a 3-mile span of beautiful beaches (with beach wheelchairs available), two jetties, two museums, walking trails, a restaurant, picnic pavilions, a bait shop, and a campground. Like other state and national parks, it charges an entrance fee, but you’ll have no trouble getting your money’s worth.

The lagoon’s average depth is just 4 feet, though a 10-foot-deep channel was dredged in the 1950s for the Intracoastal Waterway. The soil resulting from this process was used to create the many spoil islands that dot the lagoon. The ecological and economic importance of the Indian River Lagoon cannot be overstated. It faces many threats and challenges, and visitors and residents alike play a vital role in maintaining its health. The choices we make, from landscaping to litter, make a difference. We hope

Shelling Out Facts on Sea Turtles Our beaches are a major nesting site for loggerhead and green sea turtles and a secondary site for leatherbacks. Thousands of turtles come ashore—the majority from May to October—to dig nests in the sand and deposit their eggs. After about two months of incubation, the hatchlings, which number roughly 100 per nest, will dig out and head for the ocean.

Blue Cypress Lake Florida has thousands of lakes. If we in Vero Beach want to see the largest, we can be at Lake Okeechobee in under an hour. At 730 square miles, it extends into five counties and dwarfs all other lakes in the state and all but two other freshwater lakes wholly within the United States. Blue Cypress, the largest lake in Indian River County, measures just 10 square miles; it doesn’t even break the state’s top 10. Beauty, however, is another matter entirely. Ringed by graceful cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, Blue Cypress Lake is a major nesting site for ospreys. Their piercing calls punctuate the peaceful silence. Cypress trees emerge from the shallow water, their knees protruding around them. In the alcoves, the water abounds with lily pads and sawgrass. Since the lake is surrounded by wetlands, it can be viewed only by boat. The sole entry point is at Middleton’s Fish Camp on the lake’s western side, where

St. Sebastian River To the north and west of the city of Sebastian runs the St. Sebastian River, a 16-mile-long tributary of the Indian River Lagoon. The 22,000-acre St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park, formerly known as the Buffer Preserve, offers 60 miles of trails for mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking. Opportunities for birders and wildlife enthusiasts also abound. While there is no boat launch within the park, boaters and paddlers can launch from boat ramps nearby at Dale Wimbrow and Donald MacDonald Parks.

Tidying Up We in Indian River County enjoy 22 miles of unspoiled beaches. Of course, the best way to keep them unspoiled is to refrain from littering or otherwise interfering with the natural beauty of those beaches. Sometimes, however, trash finds its way onto the sands—we will assume this occurs by accident—and our beaches require some sprucing up. Participating in beach cleanups is a great way to spend some time outdoors while caring for our natural environment.

International Coastal Cleanup This annual September event is spearheaded by the Ocean Conservancy as part of its efforts to keep plastics out of the oceans. The cleanup mobilizes millions of people, who fan out to remove trash from beaches and waterways all over the world. Locally, Coastal Connections (coastal-connections. org) and Keep Indian River Beautiful (keepindianriverbeautiful. org) participate, so contact them about signing up. Great American Cleanup Keep Indian River Beautiful also participates in Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup, which takes place each year from March through June. Contact info@ keepindianriverbeautiful.org for more information.

Sunrise at Sexton On the first Wednesday of each month at 7 a.m., Coastal Connections (coastal-connections.org) holds a cleanup at Sexton Plaza, the busiest beachfront zone in the county, to intercept litter before it makes its way onto the beach or into the stormwater drains that lead to the ocean. Blue Beach Baskets Through a cooperative effort of Indian River County and Coastal Connections, reusable blue baskets have been placed at the entrances to all 13 public beaches in the county. Beach walkers are invited to take a basket, collect any trash found along the way, empty it into the proper receptacle, and return the basket to its caddy. This program allows us to create our own personal beach cleanup anytime we want!

he greater Vero Beach area is a haven for boaters and water sport enthusiasts, and we have marinas, boat ramps, and water sport outfitters aplenty. Boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding are all excellent ways to take in some fresh air

and enjoy the natural beauty of our surroundings. If you’d rather be in the water than on it, you’ll find everything you need to snorkel or scuba dive. And if you prefer to sit back and enjoy the view while someone else does the driving, there are lots of boat, catamaran, and airboat captains who will be happy to oblige.

Getting Started Fishing Licenses In general, anyone over the age of 16 must possess a valid fishing license to fish in Florida. But there are exceptions. For example, if you are 65 or over and can prove your age and Florida residency, you are off the hook—no license is required. Freshwater and saltwater licenses and related permits can be obtained at the Indian River County Tax Collector’s office at the County Administration Complex (1800 27th St., Building B) or online directly from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at gooutdoorsflorida.com. Extensive information on license and permit requirements, fees, and combination packages can be found at irctax.com and myfwc.com. For questions, call FWC at 888-347-4356. The same information applies to hunting licenses, for which FWC uses 888-486-8356.

Sebastian Fishing Museum Visitors to the Sebastian Fishing Museum, located inside the south (Indian River County) entrance of Sebastian Inlet State Park, have the opportunity to explore artifacts of the fishing industry, which played an important role in the early local economy, particularly in Sebastian. The Sembler, Smith, and Judah families are featured. The museum houses a homemade fishing boat and replicas of an original fish house and dock, along with nets and other gear used by early settlers. In addition, historical photographs of commercial fishermen at work on the Indian River Lagoon are on display throughout. Access to the museum is free with admission to the park.

Be a Bird Brain The Vero Beach area is home to a fascinating array of birds, some seasonal and some year-round residents. In wintertime, you may hear some unfamiliar songs coming from the trees, as many migratory songbirds stop here during their travels. The most visible of our feathered friends are the large wading birds we see every day. The following are some of the most notable birds likely to be seen in our area.

Pileated Woodpecker At 16 to 19 inches long, it is the largest woodpecker in North America and one of the largest in the world. It also sports a flamboyant red crest and emits boisterous vocalizations. While two similar but larger North American species are believed extinct, pileated woodpeckers are adaptable and enjoy a wide range. They are common yearround in the Southeastern United States.

Cattle Egret Smaller than the great egret, the cattle egret is likewise all white, except for some buff-colored plumage during breeding season. Just under 2 feet in height, the cattle egret is seen in open fields and yards. Its name derives from its practice of hanging out around (or even on) grazing cattle, eating the insects they stir up.

Great Blue Heron Even taller than the great egret and boasting a 6-foot wingspan, the great blue heron is an attention getter. But if you’re

and easily identifiable by its bald head and black flight feathers. Though fairly plentiful in much of Central and South America, the wood stork is listed federally as a threatened species in the United States due to its small range here; it lives year-round only in peninsular Florida.

Osprey This raptor, seen frequently in our area, feeds almost exclusively on fish, which it snatches from the water after a 30-to-100-foot dive and then carries off in its talons. Osprey nests are large and often built atop poles and dead trees, making them easy to spot.

Wild About the Outdoors If you enjoy getting out and enjoying nature, it’s a good idea to be prepared for wildlife encounters. Even if you’re not the adventurous type, it’s fun to learn about the animals in our midst. Plus, there is always the possibility of a gator-on-the-golf-course or bobcat-in-the-backyard scenario. A good rule of thumb with wild animals is, “Leave them alone and they will leave you alone.”

Alligators Alligators can be found in just about any body of water in Florida, particularly lakes; but living side by side with these scaly neighbors is not nearly as terrifying as you may think. Unprovoked gator attacks on humans are exceedingly rare. Nevertheless, alligators need to be taken seriously. Use good gator sense: be careful where you swim. Do not walk your dog along the edge of a lake—ever. Do not let children play in or near lakes. If you are near a lake and see a gator sunning itself at the water’s edge, keep your distance; it will most likely slip into the water if it becomes aware of your presence. And “Don’t feed the gators” is more than just common sense; it is enshrined in Florida law.

Bobcats About twice the size of domestic cats, bobcats pose little threat to humans. They are plentiful but reclusive, spotted occasionally in wooded areas and even backyards. They hunt rabbits, rodents, and other small animals, usually at dawn, dusk, and nighttime. As with all wildlife, observe and admire the bobcat, but keep your distance, and it will most likely blend back into the wild.

Coyotes Through natural habitat expansion, coyotes have made their way from the Western United States to every state except Hawaii, and to every county in Florida. They are close relatives of domestic dogs and will eat almost anything. They are generally shy, but it is important to discourage them from losing their fear of humans. Feeding them is forbidden. The FWC even recommends “hazing” coyotes by shouting, raising your arms, and otherwise discouraging them from making themselves at home (hazing should not be done to an injured coyote or to a parent with pups present).

Dedicated to Excellence in Real Estate Foxes Florida has two fox species: gray and red. They are not usually aggressive toward humans. Do not feed them. Discourage them by securing all pet food and garbage and refraining from leaving small domestic animals unattended outdoors or in screened enclosures. Hazing is also recommended for foxes.

Call for a Consultation Feral Pigs/Wild Hogs/Wild Boars Known by several names, feral pigs are not native but have been in Florida for centuries. Ubiquitous throughout the state, they are considered invasive due to the property damage they are capable of causing by their rooting and eating habits. They can behave aggressively and can carry diseases, so keep your distance, especially if you see a sow with her adorable piglets.

Snakes Florida is home to some 46 species of native snakes. They are a valuable part of our ecosystem, so if you see a snake in your yard, it is more likely a friend than a foe. Snakes will usually flee if not cornered, and most of us are more than happy to accord all snakes, venomous or not, a wide berth. The snakes you are most likely to encounter are neither venomous nor particularly aggressive and should be left alone:

Black racer

The corn snake, also called the red rat snake, measures 30–48 inches and is colored in shades of red, orange, and brown. The North American racer, commonly called the black racer, is very common in our area. Its length is approximately 20–54 inches. The common garter snake sports a blotched pattern with three yellowish stripes. It is usually less than 2 feet long but can grow larger. Only six venomous species are native to Florida, and of these only four live in the southern part of the state: The Eastern coral snake, though potentially dangerous, is actually shy and rarely seen. A couple of nonvenomous species mimic its red, black, and

Corn snake

yellow bands, though in different patterns. Several variations of a rhyming mnemonic help make the distinction: “Red touches yellow, kill a fellow; red touches black, venom lack.” The cottonmouth or water moccasin is a thick-bodied snake 30–48 inches long. Eight nonvenomous water snakes resemble this venomous species. Two types of rattlesnakes are native to our area, though not frequently seen: the heavy-bodied Eastern diamondback rattlesnake, which measures 33–72 inches, can shake its tail to create a buzzing sound. The dusky pygmy rattlesnake is likewise thick-bodied but much shorter at just 12–24 inches.

Common garter snake

Blue Land Crab These crabs, members of the species Cardisoma guanhumi, are found in coastal areas, where they dig burrows in moist soil up to 5 miles from the ocean. Have you ever been startled by a horde of them crossing the street or your yard? Such a largescale migration can be seen during the blue land crab’s spawning season, which peaks in October and November. After mating occurs, the female lays the eggs— many thousands of them—and carries the “egg mass” underneath her body for about two weeks, until the eggs hatch into larvae. She must then deposit the larvae into salt water, where they will spend the next few weeks developing into juvenile crabs, which will then wash up on unknown sands and establish their new homes.

Many nonnative plant and animal species have encroached upon our area over the years. Not all are harmful, but many have the potential to upset the

The Great Outdoors

Invasive Species ecological balance by competing with native species. Florida’s climate makes it a haven for invasive lizards, which are introduced either deliberately or accidentally via the exotic pet trade. One of most dramatic examples of an invasive lizard proliferating in Vero Beach is the Peter’s rock agama, an African native that has, over the past few years, become entrenched throughout our area. It is a fairly intimidating interloper; the male sports an orange head and grows to a foot in length. The agama is not venomous and generally flees from humans, but it competes with other lizards by eating insects, and may even eat the smaller Cuban brown anole, which is not native to our area but is long established here, having displaced the native green anole. No control program is in place for the agama; indeed, none has been found to work. But some efforts are being made to track its spread. IveGot1 is a smartphone app for reporting invasive species in Florida. It is available for both iPhone and Android and allows the user to submit a photograph of the creature in question. Its associated website, eddmaps.org, and hotline, 888-IVE-GOT1 (888-483-4681),

e at Vero Beach Magazine try to think of everyone who might pick up this handbook. No doubt many are longtime residents or even natives. Others may have moved here more recently. We also know that some are visiting or have received this handbook from

friends or family in the Vero Beach area. In this section, we present lots of information for those who are new to the area or are thinking about making Vero Beach their home; but there’s also plenty that will be of interest to locals, especially those who are looking for recreational ideas when entertaining children and grandchildren.

In-Town Neighborhoods Central Beach This is the neighborhood for those who prefer a relaxed, bike-to-it-all lifestyle. It is located on the barrier island between Vero Beach’s two bridges. Ocean Drive and its environs abound with shops, boutiques, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses. Riverside Park is nearby, with its tennis courts, fitness trail, boat ramp, and newly built fishing pier. Vero Beach Museum of Art, Riverside Theatre, and Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary are also in the Central Beach area.

Education Indian River County families are fortunate to have a variety of excellent educational options. In addition to public schools, our area is home to several private, charter, religious, and specialty schools. At the college level, Indian River State College offers more than 100 programs leading to bachelor’s and associate degrees as well as technical certificates and applied technology diplomas. In addition to the Massey (main) Campus in Fort Pierce, IRSC has several satellites, including the Mueller Campus in Vero Beach. Several other institutions of higher learning lie somewhat farther afield but still within commuting distance for Indian River County residents.
