VERO BEACH MAGAZINE INDIAN RIVER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

When Giving Back Comes Back Around
By Jeffrey R. Pickering
Arecent study by the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy found that only 5 percent of Americans believed they received services from a nonprofit within the previous year. This statistic made me stop and think about how my neighbors or I might respond to this question. My answer is a resounding “yes.” Give the following examples some thought, and I’ll bet yours is, too.
Over the last year, I improved my health because of the services I received from a new physician at the nonprofit Treasure Coast Community Health, which takes my health insurance and provides me with excellent care.
I pursued additional education, earning a certificate in accounting from the nonprofit Cornell University. I increased my economic opportunity by following the example of the
local nonprofit Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation to start an imprint, Riomar Press, and publish my own literary and professional works. I even improved my home and recaptured an office by donating several gently used pieces of furniture left behind by my college-aged children to the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. They even sent two men and a truck to pick these donations up!
This year’s edition of Time and Treasure: A Guide to Better Giving , published in partnership by Indian River Community Foundation and Vero Beach Magazine , includes information about more than 100 local nonprofit charitable organizations that serve people just like you and me, whether we know it or not. All of these local charities depend on financial support to carry out their missions and meet the needs of everyone in
our community.
Whatever inspires you to give or to get involved this year, I encourage you to be as generous as possible. You never know— the neighbor you help just might be your own.

Where Culture Transforms Coastline

Shining a Light on Giving
By Kelly Rogers
This annual publication, printed in partnership with Indian River Community Foundation, speaks directly to our hearts here at Vero Beach Magazine. From start to finish, it’s all about the missions of our local nonprofits, philanthropy, and just plain old giving back to the people who make up our community.
The act of giving can very easily be random and unplanned, but more often it’s intentional. We’re hoping that the following pages will help you focus on what you can give, whether it be your time, talent, or treasure, to a place where you think it will make the most impact.
We start off with a more indepth look at a few of the programs that make our hometown special: St. Francis Manor helps our low-income seniors with housing, and this year they’re celebrating 50 years doing just
that; Treasure Coast Food Bank is feeding more than 250,000 people each week (yes, each week!) in Indian River and surrounding counties; and United Against Poverty’s new Build Up program is giving crucial workforce training, résumé-writing help, and hope to people who need additional skills to help them develop a career that will serve them for life.
To follow these uplifting features, we invited organizations to share with our readers success stories about what your support has done for the people and places in our community.
In case you need more inspiration, we’ve curated a long list of nonprofits that touch on many other areas that may interest you: education, arts and culture, animals, families, health and wellness, sports, and even some history organizations, if you’re a buff.
No matter where your interest and passion for giving lies, we all have something to give, whether it’s a hand up, hand out, a few hours of volunteer work, or just kind words and a smile.

To the Manor Borne
Many seniors are grateful their paths have led to a friendly and affordable home
BY ANN TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAM WOLFE

Maria-Elena Kitchell had heard good things about St. Francis Manor but had never been there. When a friend asked her to serve on the board of directors, she decided it was time to go and take a look around.
“My first impression was, ‘What a beautiful place!’ I would be proud to have my grandmother or mother living there,” says Kitchell, who said yes to her friend and currently serves as board chair of the nonprofit community on 20th Avenue where independent seniors aged 62 and over with limited incomes enjoy an enviable quality of life. Since the doors first opened 50 years ago, thousands of seniors have called St. Francis Manor home.

look at the smile on her face and you know she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
“My mother moved here in 1976, and I think she was the happiest she’d ever been in her life—and I am, too. I feel very fortunate to be here,” says the spirited senior, who can be seen lending a helping hand or listening ear when needed.
It’s residents like Dotson that make Bonnie Matz’s job a joy. As executive director, she has the responsibility of seeing that everything at St. Francis Manor runs smoothly and that residents have what they need.
The bulletin board outside her office is filled with notices about upcoming events and a jam-packed calendar of daily activities that include weekly visits from the Treasure Coast Food Bank as well as regular bus trips to Publix, Winn-Dixie, and Walmart.
There are VNA health checks and exercise classes as well as plenty of puzzles, card games, bingo, birthday parties, and books in the library. Matz does her best to

make sure there’s something for everyone, and, if not, suggestions are more than welcome.
“St. Francis Manor is very special to me; my grandmother lived here for 13 years,” says Matz. “I’ve worked in senior care communities since I was in high school, and this place is the best.” She receives inquiries about apartment availability almost daily. There are none. The manor is full up.
“We all know there’s a dire need for affordable housing everywhere, but especially for seniors living on Social Security,” Matz points out. “Right now there are over 100 names on our waiting list.”
Nodding, Kitchell adds, “That’s why we want to add three buildings on the east side of the lake. Then the property will be built out. Up until now, our No. 1 priority has been to take care of what we have. Now that all the maintenance work has been done, we can move ahead with our expansion plans. At present, we’re in the awareness stage, which means letting people know where we are, what we’re all about.”
That’s what Tracey Soethe does best. As the manor’s communications and develop-

“So many people who live in Vero drive by and don’t know what we do here,” says Soethe. “We’re having an open house on November 14 to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We want people to come, tour the grounds, enjoy refreshments, and meet and talk with the residents.”
Those who come will be impressed. Cheery yellow buildings with studio and one-bedroom apartments cluster around a courtyard where walkways curve and plants and flowers flourish. Additional apartments border the lake at the rear of the property.
St. Francis Manor is a success story that got its start back in 1972 when real estate agent Frank Zorc expressed his concern over the growing number of low-income seniors and lack of affordable housing to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which provided seed money to seek a solution. Attorney and board member James Vocelle provided free legal services, and a longterm lease from the county for the 5-acre site east of 20th Avenue between 16th and

Two years later, the first 12-unit building welcomed residents. Two years after that, another 12-unit building and the social hall and administration building were completed. Fast-forward to 1981, and the last 12-unit building was move-in ready. Everything was built with in-kind contributions from local contractors and private funding. The same was true in 2018 when two new buildings were dedicated.
St. Francis Manor is a busy, beautiful community, and Matz wouldn’t be anywhere else.
When asked what she likes best about her job, she says, “Just being here for the residents. Random things will come up that need to be taken care of, and knowing that most days I’ve made an impact on someone’s life makes me smile.” ◆

Getting the Job Done
United Against Poverty’s Build UP program teaches tools of the trade
BY ANN TAYLOR

“We’ve got your back—you’re going up!”
Shouts of affirmation ring out as United Against Poverty (UP) staff and STEP (Success Training Employment Program) participants form a large circle, clap, and call out while moving to music that rocks the room. It’s a 15-minute double shot of positivity, and a beaming Araminta “Minta” Caldwell, UP’s workforce manager, is right in the middle of it all.
“It’s our Morning Motivation and we do it first thing every day,” she explains. “It gets everyone energized before they head off to the classroom, where they learn how to find and get a job, put together a winning résumé,
and how to make a positive impression during an interview. It’s four weeks of workforce training Monday through Friday. We also connect them with area employers and follow up with one-on-one support.”
“In February we added a new program called Build UP, which teaches skills that can lead to a job in the trades,” Caldwell continues. “The idea came to us two years ago from a board member who had been talking with a contractor who was having a hard time finding qualified workers, so we started doing research, addressing the need in Indian River County, and meeting with the Treasure Coast Builders Association.”

“ We have people come into the program and go out with skills employers really need.”
– ARAMINTA CALDWELL

James Brann, who heads up TCBA’s Workforce Task Force, goes back to the beginning. “We got involved with United Against Poverty after one of our board members provided information on the STEP program. We met with Matt [Tanner, UP’s executive director] and his team and quickly realized there was a great opportunity for our two organizations to work together,” Brann says. He explains: “We worked on a program that provided basic skills—math, print r eading, measuring and calculating, and the proper use of hand and power tools—that could transfer over to the construction, manufacturing, and marine industries. The shortage of skilled workers continues to be an issue across

all sectors. There are many high-paying opportunities locally here on the Treasure Coast, and we felt the Build UP program would be a great way to bridge that gap.”
Caldwell couldn’t agree more as she opens the door to a large workroom where the sweet smell of sawdust lingers. “Home Depot gave us a grant and some power tools,” she says, gesturing toward a wall where tools hang, ready for hands-on duty.

“One of our first participants built those stools, and a second one built the workstation. We have people come into the program and go out with skills employers really need; there are so many opportunities.”
“What I love most is when we have speed interviews during week three of the STEP and Build UP programs on Thursday— that’s when employers come in and participants can showcase their work,” says
Caldwell, who gives an example of a success story.
“We had a young lady who really wanted to work for Piper, but she didn’t have her GED. Math was what was stopping her from getting the degree, so I went to Matt and we rewrote our format. We helped her with the math portion of the Build UP program and she did great. She’s now working at Piper, and it’s all because of Build UP.”
Workforce manager Araminta Caldwell leads Morning Motivation.
Robert Gagnon is a recent graduate of the Build UP program.
Build UP graduate Ste’phen Henriquez is all smiles.

Caldwell then leads the way into a lab where rows of computers await.
“Right now we’re getting ready to use a new AI career exploration course that has 38 different modules,” she says. “You put the goggles on and you can virtually do the work. There’s one module that teaches you how to become a great receptionist, another where you can actually drive a forklift. There’s even one that teaches you how to do sheet metal fabrication. “That way you can try the job out to see if it’s something you want to do. It’s exciting!”
Build UP is the latest addition to United Against Poverty’s programs and services designed to lift individuals and families living
at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level to economic selfsufficiency.
The nonprofit, founded in 2003 by Austin and Ginny Hunt, provides a member share grocery program, crisis care, counseling, case management, education, and employment training and placement, as well as referrals to collaborative social service providers, and it all happens inside UP’s 46,000-square-foot center on 27th Street in Vero Beach, a super hub of support that gives hope to an average of 650 individuals daily.
As Caldwell says, “People are amazed when they come in here. They have no idea of all that we do, of the many services we provide. We help transform lives.” ◆ Trisha

Treasure Coast Food Bank addresses the ever-growing reality of food insecurity
BY ANN TAYLOR
When Judy Cruz tells you that Treasure Coast Food Bank serves 250,000plus people a week through its network of agencies and programs, you do a double take. Surely she meant 250,000 a month; but no, Cruz, president and CEO of the not-for-profit organization that has been delivering nutritious food and staple items throughout our four-county area since 1988, means just what she said. It’s hard to believe that a quarter of a million individuals and families are experiencing food insecurity.
“For many people, getting food is a real struggle,” says Cruz, “and it’s even more so since the pandemic, with the increased costs of things we need on a daily basis. We’re serving 34 percent more folks, and it’s not just one particular demographic that’s affected. It’s across the board.
“It’s people who are working and have to choose between buying food or paying their rent and utility bills. It’s retirees whose fixed incomes stretch only so far, and people who moved here and didn’t realize costs were going to

be so significant. It’s a whole storm of factors.”
The Ramirez family is caught up in that storm. Even though Juan and Maria both work hard—he as a skilled mechanic, she as a caregiver to their three young children during the day and a waitress at night—and watch every penny, the rising cost of living has them struggling financially. Grocery bills in particular are a major cause of concern. Thanks to TCFB’s mobile pantry program, they regularly receive fresh fruits, vegetables, and pantry items. The Ramirezes are not alone.
Every year, TCFB, a partner food bank of Feeding America, the nationwide network of 200 food banks that leads the fight against hunger in the United

States, provides millions of meals valued at more than $50 million to individuals and families through programs and partnerships with 300 charitable organizations in our four-county area. That’s huge.
“We’re fortunate in that we have wonderful retail partners and a robust agricultural community that help with donations and discounted purchases,” Cruz points out. “But we’re more than just a food distributor. We have programs and services
like job training, nutrition education, and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) that work to help end hunger.”
Add to that the support TCFB receives from dedicated volunteers. Last year, 10,000 individuals provided over 48,000 hours of service, sorting and boxing food, making deliveries, answering phones, supporting events, making food drive pickups—doing whatever needed to be done, with a smile.
Another way people contributed was during the annual National Stamp Out Hunger Day, the second Saturday in May. Hundreds of people did their part by leaving nonperishable food items by their mailboxes for letter carriers to collect and deliver locally. The simple act of purchasing buy-one-get-one-free items and donating the second one can make a big difference in someone’s life.

financial difficulties due to soaring food costs were able to access TCFB’s Summer Meals program, which provides breakfast, lunch, and snacks to children aged 18 years and younger, free of charge. Available at various locations throughout the four counties, the program ran June 3 through August 9. Every weekday, children enjoyed fresh, nutritious meals and participated in fun activities that focused on healthy eating and living habits.
The latest news, and cause for a drum roll, is TCFB’s new multifunctional warehouse and distribution center on Loop Road in Fort Pierce, which broke ground this past February. The new, 132,000-square-foot facility will serve as a onestop shop for individuals and families. Cruz can’t wait until the doors open next year.
“We needed to have a centrally located space where people from the community could come and utilize our programs, and easy access from I-95 was critical,” Cruz explains, noting that the center will also support community needs in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.
“There is so much more we want to do,” Cruz says. “My life path led me to the Treasure Coast Food Bank 15 years ago. It seems like everything I accomplished before I came here were lessons I needed to learn. I get to see the work the nonprofits are doing, especially in Indian River County.
“We’re all working to create a stronger community, and it’s a privilege to see the impact we have, the touches we make. It’s the best of humanity and makes me so proud to be a part of this community.” ◆

Oliver not only found much-needed solace and care at the shelter, he won the hearts of everyone he met there. He was even playful,
despite the hardships he had endured. But suddenly, Oliver fell ill. HSVB’s veterinarian and clinic team sprang into action, performing diagnostic tests that revealed an intestinal obstruction that was probably a result of Oliver’s desperate foraging on the streets. It was a life-threatening situation, but the vet’s skill and determination helped the patient pull through. WILLIE
“Willie is our goodwill ambassador. He is our hero.” That’s how the folks at Our Father’s Table describe him.
Having delivered an estimated 350,000 meals to elderly and homebound Gifford residents since 1988, Willie has become somewhat of a legend in the community he has lived in all his life. Everyone recognizes him, and he knows every family.
Willie’s knock and call of “Soup kitchen” are welcome sounds for the people he visits, and his friendship and jokes provide a much-needed respite in the midst of loneliness and isolation. Recently, when Willie was home recuperating from some health issues, clients called the kitchen regularly to ask how Willie was doing and to say they missed him.

Each year at the Martin Luther King Day parade, Willie sits in the front seat of the Our Father’s Table van and waves to the crowds, who invariably break out into chants of “Wil-lie, Wil-lie!” Popularity is not necessarily a measure of success in volunteer endeavors, but in this case it is clear that the love received is the yield of love sown.

However, during his recovery, Kal developed complications, and, during a return visit to the vet for a bandage change, his owners abandoned him, leaving his belongings in the parking lot.
HALO (Helping Animals Live and Overcome) stepped in with its Angel Medical Program and made sure Kal got the additional surgery and heavy course of antibiotics he needed to save his life.
It took 12 weeks, but Kal made a full recovery and was immediately adopted. His new family sent an update after a few months, informing the folks at HALO that Kal, renamed Rigley because it seemed to suit his personality, was thriving. “He has been doing great,” they wrote. “He is so sweet! We love him so much!”

THE LEARNING ALLIANCE
ZACHARY
At the beginning of third grade, Zachary was reading well below grade level. His FAST (Florida Assessment of Student Thinking) reading score was a 2 on a scale of 1 to 5, indicating that he would need “substantial support” to get on track with his reading.
Through Learning Alliance programs made possible by volunteers, donors, and a public-private partnership with the School District of Indian River County, Zachary received specialized tutoring during the school day and attended the Moonshot Academy after school.
With hard work and tailored assistance, Zachary made significant gains in reading comprehension, phonics, and vocabulary—all of which translated into an increase in confidence and an improvement in his overall academic performance. Zachary now demonstrates enthusiasm, a creative imagination, and a new eagerness to participate in class.

At the end of third grade, Zachary’s FAST reading assessment level had risen to 4, placing him on grade level and likely to succeed in his studies and become a lifelong learner.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES’ SAMARITAN CENTER
TIM & FAMILY
For several years, Tim was comfortable renting a home in Vero Beach with his wife and children. Then, an accumulation of factors such as rising rents, health issues, and medical bills forced the family into homelessness. It can happen in the blink of an eye when oncestable families face circumstances that send them into a downward spiral.
Tim was struck another devastating blow when he lost his wife to cancer.
He turned to Samaritan Center for help, which began with transitional housing and expanded from there. For the next seven months, within the safety net of the center, Tim and his family received case management services that included wellness therapy and parenting skills training. Tim worked hard, saved up $5,000 toward future housing, and, with the connections made through Samaritan Center, broke ground on a Habitat for Humanity house.
“The Samaritan Center care team has provided my family a pathway home,” Tim says. “They have made such a huge difference in the lives of my children, I can’t thank them enough.”

TYKES AND TEENS
AUSTIN*
When 5-year-old Austin arrived for his first session at Tykes and Teens’ behavioral health care office in September 2023, he had been dismissed from several daycares due to unsafe behaviors. At this time, he climbed on furniture and attempted to run out of the building. His reckless disregard for his own safety distressed his parents, who committed to taking the recommended steps to help Austin be happy, safe, and successful both at home and in public.
The course of action involved a Tykes and Teens psychiatrist, a neurologist, and the public school system. Austin gradually became comfortable with the therapy process, and his parents received guidance on how to manage Austin in various situations, support his emotional regulation, and teach him safety skills through games and activities.
In less than six months, Austin and his parents had built a trusting relationship with the therapist, gained a better understanding of his troubling behaviors, and obtained an individualized education program that would allow him to reintegrate into a school setting.
There is still room for growth and the work continues, but a new sense of hope now pervades Austin’s world.

FOR THE LOVE OF PAWS
BARBARA & LADY
In addition to maintaining a pet sanctuary to provide peace of mind to senior citizens who can no longer care for their pets, as well as a pet food pantry and other services, For the Love of Paws has embarked on a Therapy Dog Program that is already seeing great success.

The project has organized existing independent therapy pairs, such as Barbara and Lady (aka Ladybug), and recruited new teams, helping all to obtain national certification. The response has been overwhelming, and at least a dozen fully certified and insured therapy dog teams are in action, bringing comfort and happiness to hospitals, nursing homes, memory care facilities, senior centers, and schools.
Only about half of the canine applicants pass the certification test, as not everyone has the temperament for therapy work; thus, the teams that achieve certification are given a special opportunity to help others.
On their excursions, Barbara and Lady visit both groups and individuals, seeing at least 100 to 150 people per month and spreading smiles as they go.
INDIAN RIVER LAND TRUST
AVA
Often, opportunities encountered in high school can help shape the course of a person’s future. Ava has certainly found that out through her involvement with the Junior Scientist Fellows Program (JSP), the result of a partnership between the Indian River Land Trust and FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.
For two years, Ava performed scientific research on Land Trust properties, yielding data that contributed to the management of these environmentally important coastal lands.
SENIOR RESOURCE ASSOCIATION
LOUISE
Lifelong Indian River County resident Louise spent more than 40 years of her career caring for a family in Vero Beach’s Riomar neighborhood, and she took pride in the cooking and housekeeping skills she applied both at work and at home.

Now 92, Louise has had to start relying on others to provide these services for her, and it is Senior Resource Association that has stepped in to keep her safe and able to live independently in her own home.
The happy, smiling senior admits to reacting with denial when her vision began to fail decades ago. Routine tasks such as changing sheets, doing laundry, preparing meals, and cleaning the house became increasingly difficult or even impossible for her.
For eight years now, SRA has provided Louise with light housekeeping services that greatly improve her quality of life. She also receives a daily hot meal and wellness check through SRA’s Meals on Wheels program. Louise is grateful for SRA’s services, particularly because they allow her to remain in her home. “It helps me a great deal to have the service coming in, because without them it would have been impossible for me to be here,” she says.

Ava describes the impact the program had on her: “I was super excited to get connected with JSP because of the opportunity for hands-on research, and getting involved with professionals in their field. I loved meeting like-minded students, working towards something that I knew had tangible benefits for my community, and getting a taste of what real-world science looked like.”
Now a student at Rollins College, Ava is majoring in computer
science and mathematics with a minor in biology. She hopes to pursue a career in data science with a focus on biology and environmental research.
“JSP solidified my love for environmental science and, surprisingly, statistics—seeing how big a role data science played in our projects helped bring in-classroom knowledge into real-world use.”

GENESIS LITERACY SERVICES OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
Though she possessed intermediate English reading and writing skills, Genesis had difficulties with spoken English, struggling to comprehend and articulate. A physician in her troubled homeland of Venezuela, she approached Literacy Services to help her with the linguistic skills she would need to attempt to build a brighter future here in the United States.

After working with a tutor, Genesis has shown a dramatic improvement in her English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. She has attained certification as a medical assistant, survived a job interview in her second language, and obtained employment at a local medical facility!
Due to the dire circumstances currently prevailing in Venezuela, Genesis has applied for Temporary Protected Status with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. She is doing everything in her power to remain in this country and to improve herself while here. She is even investigating the steps necessary to become a licensed physician in the United States.
WOMEN’S REFUGE OF VERO BEACH
KATHY
One might say that Kathy’s “success story” has two chapters. The first dates back to 2014, when she arrived at the Women’s Refuge feeling “hopeless and worthless with no reason for living.”
Through the refuge’s counseling services, her life began to change. She began to change. “I learned that my identity was not in what happened to me as a child or the abusive marriage I was in. It was in Jesus Christ. I learned to hope again, a hope that was in Christ.”

Over time, a yearning grew within her to reach out to others like herself: “God gave me the desire to help other women know the healing only He can give.”
Nine years after her first visit to the refuge, Kathy returned—this time to begin its internship program. Now that she has graduated from the counseling course, she is equipped to facilitate
Shelter from the Storm, a group for survivors of sexual abuse. She intends to continue down the counseling path.
“I am thankful for everything I am learning, those who are walking alongside me, and what God is doing in my heart and life. I am excited to see what He is going to do and how He is going to use me for His glory.”

CHILDCARE RESOURCES OF INDIAN RIVER TYLER*
Childcare Resources early childhood mental health therapist Rachel Toperzer loves helping children address developmental, emotional, and behavioral issues. That passion was crucial when 3-year-old Tyler was referred to her after he began exhibiting alarming behavior, causing property damage in his classrooms and even striking and biting other children. His aggressiveness escalated to the point that his school could no longer accommodate him due to safety concerns.
Rachel’s initial conversation with Tyler’s mother revealed that the boy’s parents were in the midst of a separation due to domestic violence. This information provided Rachel with insight into the turmoil in Tyler’s life and the emotional distress behind his disruptive behavior.
With consistent therapy from Rachel and an unwavering commitment by his family, Tyler eventually began making progress. In fact, over the next eight months, he showed remarkable courage and resilience on his transformative journey. He learned to calm his nervous system, regulate his emotions, communicate effectively, and identify and manage his triggers.
Today, Tyler is thriving in the elementary school system. “It was rewarding to watch him improve and grow on a weekly basis,” says Rachel. “His story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and dedication, even the most challenging situations can lead to success and healing.”

ANTASIA THE HOPE FOR FAMILIES CENTER

Sometimes a stable family becomes homeless in a single blow; in other cases, the situation is generations in the making.
Most of Antasia’s life has been spent on the streets. Her childhood would be unfathomable to most people—often searching for life’s necessities, sometimes accompanied by her drug-addicted mother.
At one point, Antasia was in an abusive relationship and three months pregnant with her third child. Her abuser forced her and her two small children out of the house, and she fell back on the only survival skills she knew. In that situation, Antasia later pointed out, families are not really living; they are hiding in fear of their children being taken away. She and her kids slept in the woods and occasionally in an abandoned shed.
Learning about The Hope for Families Center was a godsend, and Antasia arrived with nothing but her two children in a broken wagon and her determination to start over.
Today, Antasia is happy to be safe and to see her children experiencing things she never had, such as daycare. She is one resilient woman who acclimates quickly to new situations— attributes that served her well as she interviewed for her new job. She is now looking forward to a healthy future with her three children.
ALZHEIMER & PARKINSON ASSOCIATION OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY

DAVID
“No one expects this. We had plans,” says Nancy, referring to her husband’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s disease. Nancy and David, married 56 years, had both been active and healthy. “Dave is still a positive person,” she adds, “but this disease basically changed our roles and upended our lives.”
Nancy and David have availed themselves of some of the local Alzheimer & Parkinson Association’s 40 programs and services for people with memory and movement disorders and their families.
Social Respite gives David a safe place to spend his days, enjoying
activities, engaging with others, and making friends. Meanwhile, it offers Nancy a chance to run errands, enjoy her own activities, and take a break from “caregiver” mode, secure in the knowledge that David is being looked after.
A support group also allows Nancy to share her experiences with others who understand her journey; the mutual support is priceless. “It sounds like a small thing,” says Nancy, “but it actually is fundamental. I am connected. What I’ve learned can help others, and what I learn from them helps me every day and helps me plan for the road ahead.”
to be celebrating 40 years!

VNA Hospice House
For hospice patients whose symptoms cannot be managed at home, the VNA Hospice House offers end-of-life care in an elegant, yet cozy home-like setting.
In collaboration with the Indian River County Hospital District, the mobile health clinic goes into neighborhoods throughout our community to bring affordable healthcare to those who are under or uninsured.
Music Therapy
Provides physical, emotional and spiritual support through a compassionate and non-invasive approach for patients and their families receiving hospice or home health care. Music Therapy promotes increased relaxation, reduced pain, reduced anxiety, cognitive improvements and develops coping skills.

Bereavement Services
The VNA bereavement team provides individual counseling, heads support groups and hosts public bereavement events to help hospice patients, their family members anyone in need of support.

Remote Patient Monitoring
Telemonitoring provides a safe, cost-effective solution to care for patients living with a chronic disease. It offers peace of mind to both patients and physicians while allowing patients to live safely at home.

VERO BEACH FILM FESTIVAL
VERO BEACH FILM FESTIVAL
Established in 2016, the Vero Beach Film Festival offers a rich, immersive cinematic experience celebrating independent film. It emphasizes the art of media and storytelling and is firmly committed to inclusivity, education, and community engagement.

WE BELIEVE IN FILM’S ENDURING POWER, BEAUTY, AND PROFOUND SOCIETAL IMPACT, CHERISHING IT AS AN ESSENTIAL ART FORM AND A POTENT TOOL FOR EXPLORATION AND EDUCATION.

YOUTH
One of the aims of our youth program is to inspire and educate the next generation of filmmakers, nurturing their potential by equipping them with tools to comprehend and address societal issues through film.
COMMUNITY
Recognized among the Top 100 best-reviewed film festivals, VBFF has earned acclaim from the Huffington Post, which dubbed it “The Summer Sundance,” and consistently ranks it as one of the nation’s foremost film festivals.
Since its inception, VBFF has evolved beyond a traditional four-day film festival. Initiatives include a regional filmmaking program (Vero Visions), the student apprenticeship program (NEXT UP! Student Films), and collaborations with local high schools to create youth film programs.
In 24-25, VBFF will introduce its latest initiative, “FILM VERO,” which aims to enrich our community through impactful youth programs, fostering community partnerships, supporting filmmakers, and boosting tourism.
VBFF has forged partnerships with local nonprofits and is screening films that tackle pressing community issues like mental health, substance abuse, poverty, and child literacy.
FILMMAKERS
VBFF strives to showcase the best of independent filmmaking talent while highlighting visiting filmmakers and industry leaders through discussions and workshops.
TOURISM
VBFF benefits tourism by attracting visitors from various regions, boosting local hospitality and retail sectors, enhancing the cultural appeal of Vero Beach and Indian River County.
Our continued existence depends on the generous support of our sponsors and donors. For more information, contact us at:
