CLARIFICATION In the March issue, we featured Jennifer Eckhart in “Celebrating Women,” where she spoke about her former employment at Fox News and ensuing lawsuit. After the issue went to press, a judge dismissed Eckhart’s claims against Fox News. (Eckhart has said she plans to appeal the ruling.) A spokesperson from Fox News provided the following statement: “We are pleased with the court’s decision, which speaks for itself. Upon learning of Jennifer Eckhart’s allegations in 2020, Fox News promptly conducted an investigation by an outside independent law firm and terminated [the male employee] within six days. Discovery in this matter confirmed that Fox News was not aware of their relationship or of Ms. Eckhart’s allegations until after she left the company. The only people who know what happened between [the male employee] and Ms. Eckhart are the two of them.”

e all know that there is nothing more important in life than our health—mind, body, and soul. But it’s easy to forget to take care of ourselves, especially when other things in life get in the way. I do my best to take care of my body, scheduling all the necessary exams, checkups, and tests each year and getting exercise through fun activities like biking, dance classes, paddleboarding, and my new hobby of roller skating. And I have my own ways of nurturing my mind and soul, through things like yoga, crossword puzzles (they keep the brain sharp!), and surrounding myself with kind people, good food, and lots of love—which, these days, comes in the form of my little pup, Bowie! What are your tried-and-true ways of staying healthy?

Whatever you do, keep doing it!

Our annual Mind + Body issue, which we publish every May/June, is meant to inspire you to put wellness center stage in your life, so you can live your best life in the truest sense. If you turn to page 54 (“On the Road for Awareness”), you’ll meet the Turner family—who also grace this month’s cover—and I dare you not to be inspired by their courage and commitment. Emilia Turner, who’s 7 years old, was diagnosed with a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis when she was just an infant. NF can cause a variety of health issues, and right now Emilia is battling a brain tumor, among other things. Instead of letting their daughter’s illness get the best of the family, her parents, Sarah and Robbie, sold their Jupiter home, bought an RV, and hit the road for an epic adventure. The Turners began traveling across the country last summer—with dog Charley in tow—visiting national parks and spreading awareness for NF along the way (Robbie has been running races in different states to help the cause). I had the chance to hang out with the family at our photo shoot, and I want to thank them for their time, kindness, and spirit-lifting positivity.

Also in this issue, you’ll meet Kirsten Sadlier, who moved to Jupiter with her family two years ago to live a life of happiness and health. Kirsten is an incredible artist who paints surfboards with custom designs for private residences and businesses alike, including well-known brands such as Kendra Scott, Nespresso, and Jo Malone. She has also helped create an exclusive wallpaper collection for Chelsea Lane & Co. and recently sketched a unique design for The Seed in Jupiter. As if that’s not enough, Kirsten also runs a program called The Darling Collection, where she invites local kids to her home studio to create beautiful works of fine art—a fun day for children that can be very therapeutic too. Learn more about Kirsten in “Inspired,” which starts on page 46.

These pages are filled with lots more wellness-related content, but I’ve run out of room here so I will leave it to you to explore.... any of us likely recall childhood weekends spent at the roller rink, skating in circles under flashing lights to popular jams of the time. As years passed, many roller rinks disappeared and interest in the sport waned. But the pandemic sparked a resurgence of interest in the activity, as folks laced up for

the first time in years to get some fresh air and stay active.

Now the Treasure Coast is getting in on the act, transforming an old park into an outdoor skating haven—Skate City.

The space in Whispering Pines Park had gone unused for the past 15 years, until a group of local skaters connected with Port St. Lucie Mayor Shannon Martin last September about revitalizing the area. The group, known as St. Lucie Skaters, has more than 1,000 members on Facebook—and Mayor Martin took notice. “I saw the group’s videos on Facebook, and it reminded me of the days I would spend after school roller-skating around the neighborhood with friends,” says the mayor.

With the help of the Parks and Recreation Department, the 39,000-square-foot lot was repaved to create a smooth surface for roller skating, and Skate City opened to the public in January.

Roller skaters (and bladers) can enjoy the rink, which is lit at night, daily from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Says Mayor Martin: “Skate City isn’t just a place to skate, it’s a place to connect, create memories, and have fun. Since its inception, The Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis has raised more than $3.1 million for Piper’s Angels, impacting hundreds of families affected by CF (including some overseas, through the organization’s Angels Abroad program).

Paddlers train hard for the annual event, dedicating months preparing for the 15-hour paddle through cross-training, strength-building, and ocean paddling sessions to familiarize themselves with the unpredictable conditions of the Gulf Stream.

“Conditions can change in an instant—from flat and calm to intense wind and currents,” says Suit. Boats accompany the paddlers, providing support, staff, and supplies along the way.

As Suit stands on his board powering through the taxing journey each year, he thinks about his daughter and others suffering from the effects of CF and perseveres. “Paddling through the night in complete darkness, with only the distant lights of Florida ahead, can be both mentally and physically exhausting,” he says. “Fatigue sets in, and you may be faced with pushing through extreme pain or seasickness—but the motivation to keep going comes from the community and the CF warriors we’re paddling for.” crossingforcysticfibrosis.com; pipersangels.org ❖

he Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis is more than just a race— it’s a powerful, purpose-driven event that unites a global community of paddle enthusiasts, all challenging themselves for the greater good of others.

Now in its ninth year, the 80-mile sea trek that begins in Bimini, Bahamas and concludes in Florida at Lake Worth Beach is set for June 19-22, when more than 100 participants will paddle for a cause so much greater than the race itself: raising funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis.

The first Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis was in 2013, launched

by Jupiter Farms resident Travis Suit to raise money and awareness for the illness that affects his now-17-year-old daughter, Piper. When she was just 4 years old, Piper was diagnosed with CF, a rare and progressive genetic condition that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. “It was dream-shattering and life-changing,” Suit recalls of receiving the diagnosis. “But over time, it transformed into a deeper purpose.”

That purpose was the Piper’s Angels Foundation, a grassroots organization Suit started to help individuals with CF and their families through financial assistance, peer-to-peer support, mental health coaching, and more.

When Suit learned from a respiratory therapist that surfers in Australia suffering from CF were showing much better checkup results—apparently the result of salt or saline improving lung airway clearance—it sparked hope. “Hearing this news was a miracle,” Suit says. “There was a natural, therapeutic environment to help Piper heal and stay healthy, and it was the ocean.”

He began taking Piper on paddleboarding excursions, which eventually led to his idea for The Crossing. Says Suit: “I wanted to do something that would get people’s attention and put CF and its warriors in the spotlight so the world would see what M AY/ JUN E 2 0 2 5

s pickleball continues to grow in popularity, so do the injuries that come with any physical sport.

Tequesta resident and avid pickleball player Dr. Gary DiBlasio, doctor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Advanced Medical Rehabilitation Group in North Palm Beach, is seeing more and more pickleball-related injuries like muscle strains and sprains, especially in the neck, back, shoulders, knees, and wrists.

They range from acute injuries like ankle sprains and meniscal tears to overuse injuries like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and shoulder rotator cuff injuries.

“Most of the injuries I see are related to overuse in people who are not at a high fitness level and end up playing for too long and/or too often without a break or cross-training,” DiBlasio says.

He adds that seniors are particularly vulnerable, often due to a combination of lower fitness levels and prior injuries. In DiBlasio’s experience, he says, men tend to suffer more muscle strains and joint sprains, while women are more likely to experience fractures.

So how can you keep up your A game on the court without ending up needing to schedule a doctor’s visit? Start by knowing your limits. It may be tempting to jump right into the action, but warming up for at least 10 minutes can help you avoid a painful misstep—DiBlasio suggests dynamic stretches like arm circles, lunges, or hip rotations as well as practicing shots specific to the game.

If you’re new to the sport, you might consider taking lessons from a professional to improve your technique. And incorporating cross-training and lowimpact activities like swimming or biking into your fitness routine can help increase overall strength, flexibility, and balance while reducing the repetitive strain on the same muscles and joints.

Of course, the proper gear is of utmost importance, DiBlasio says, especially court-specific footwear that offers plenty of ankle, heel, and arch support. Safety glasses, sunscreen, and hydration also can make a big difference. And if you’re feeling sore, take a break—your body will thank you later. ❖

Beach Gardens resident and mental health counselor has always been passionate about guiding people through their struggles, and she founded The Shift to help women reconnect with themselves through one-day and weekend retreats.

The idea originated from not only listening to her female clients but also from her own experience as a woman. “Being a woman myself and knowing what I have struggled with, I wanted to create something that combined the relaxation component with the mental health and personal growth side,” says Vivolo. It’s this multifaceted approach, she says, that makes The Shift Retreats different from other traditional wellness retreats—and life-changing for many attendees.

The itinerary of each Shift Retreat varies, but experiences may include yoga, meditation, sound baths, facials, massages, kayaking, and more.

Healthy meals are prepared daily by a private chef, and ample time is scheduled for guests to relax and get to know each other. the mental health component,” she says.

During weekend retreats, which are held in private homes Vivolo rents out in Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach, there is a different workshop every day. “It starts with ‘You Are Good Enough,’ where we explore reasons why you may not feel good enough in certain situations,” she says.

“We get to look at ourselves in a more authentic way.” The next day, Vivolo conducts a self-awareness workshop focusing on beliefs, fears, excuses, and motivations. The third workshop on the last day focuses on what to do next. “It’s about creating goals and how you can implement them in your life,” says Vivolo.

Attendees also participate in a “Fears in the Firepit” event, where they write their fears on scraps of paper and then throw them into a fire during a guided mediation.

“The weekend retreats are really for deeper healing and reconnecting to yourself,” says Vivolo, who limits the number of attendees to 12 women at most. Her one-day retreats are a shortened version of the weekend retreats and accommodate up to 30 attendees.

Vivolo hopes to expand her Shift Retreats beyond South Florida and even internationally in the future. “My goal is for women to leave with a newfound awareness of who they are and feeling motivated to continue working on themselves,” she says.

n late 2020, April Orlando received news that would change the trajectory of her life, both personally and professionally.

The Jupiter resident was diagnosed with skin cancer on her nose and cheek area, which required Mohs surgery to remove and a plastic surgeon to subsequently repair the affected area. She had always worn SPF products when going to the beach or out on her boat, but she hadn’t realized the importance of daily sun protection. After the cancer scare, she knew better.

Orlando and her daughter, Lauren, decided that from then on, anything they put on their faces would need to have sun protection—including makeup. But they struggled to find beauty products or cosmetics (aside from sunscreen, moisturizer, and clear lip balm) with UVA/UVB protection.

Take advantage of this species’ spring migration and catch yourself a dolphinfish with these tips

O

ne of the most appealing aspects of fishing in South Florida is the variety of species there is to choose from—but none call anglers to the water like the dolphinfish. A dolphinfish (or mahi-mahi), is arguably the most popular offshore game fish available to Florida anglers, highly regarded for both its spectacular coloration and its superb edibility. These fish are aggressive and acrobatic on your line and nearly always willing to strike. Their voracious appetite makes it easy to catch them on a wide array of tackle—and

trolling both live and rigged dead bait, casting or trolling artificial lures, even fly fishing, will all produce results.

Dolphin are always a welcome sight chasing your bait down, and right now is the best time to target these fish, as they are in the midst of their northward migration (which typically peaks from May through June). While dolphin are available to some extent year-round, the spring migration offers the most consistent chance to run into significant numbers of these brilliant predators. During this season, dolphin are most commonly

found using the northbound Gulf Stream current to their advantage. The edge of the continental shelf from 100 to 200 feet deep provides a highway for travel, where anglers will typically encounter migratory pelagic fish including dolphin.

Setting up along this ledge is a great starting point. On a busy weekend, however, when the ledge gets crowded, your odds for success diminish here due to the increase in pressure (along with the likelihood of other boats reducing the number of fish passing by). If you expect the competition from other boats to be heavy, another option is to run farther east into the deep in search of any obvious current edges, rips, or the resulting weed line that these edges often produce.

Locating an edge offshore, then running southbound into the current along the edge, can be very productive. Finding a significant patch of sargassum weed or any other floating object (such as wood or other debris) will often get you in the game. These floats provide cover and habitat for baitfish, which in turn provide a meal further up the food chain. Cruising these lines looking for a patch with plenty of baitfish swimming in close proximity to the cover KNOW YOUR LIMITS will regularly produce a bite.

d e r i p Ins Love and gratitude inspire Kirsten Sadlier to live her best life— as a mom, wife, mentor, and incredibly talented artist

K

irsten Sadlier and her husband, Christian, were living in Newport Beach, California a few years ago when they decided to look for a new place to settle with their kids. They wanted to raise their young sons, Grant and Pierce, in a place where they could fully embrace a healthy, active, outdoorcentric lifestyle. They found exactly what they were looking for in Jupiter.

“Christian and I were looking for a place where we could put down some roots, have the best quality of

life, and wake up every day feeling grateful and happy,” says Sadlier. “We had visited [Jupiter] many times and realized it checked all the boxes for us.”

They made the move in May 2023, and Sadlier, a professional artist, got to work setting up her home studio, where she paints the whimsical surfboards she is best known for, among other art pieces. As a young child growing up in the quaint hamlet of Miller Place on the north shore of New York’s Long Island, Sadlier says she first discovered art as a way to deal with her ADHD, which she wasn’t even aware she had at the time. “My childhood was a constant struggle,” she says,

recalling that she grappled with excessive restlessness and a low attention span. She discovered she had an innate talent for drawing, an outlet that would provide a lasting and positive effect on her mental well-being. “It was difficult for me to focus and listen in class, but when I sketched and doodled during lessons, it helped me relax and absorb information more easily,” she says.

Sadlier’s parents nurtured her passion for art (her father was in the art world too), and in high school, she shifted her focus to painting. One of her early works back then—a still life of designer shoes titled Burberry—won first place at a local young artists’ exhibition, and she went on to compete in a national high school visual arts competition sponsored by the Congressional Institute. Despite the accolades and art scholarships she received, self-doubt about becoming a successful artist led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in advertising and marketing instead at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

After graduating in 2009, she worked in sales for Red Bull and helped Voss raise money for its clean water projects in SubSaharan Africa.

In 2011, she met her future husband at a house party in the Hamptons. While their connection was instant, it wasn’t until they saw each other working out at Equinox fitness club in Manhattan two years later that their relationship blossomed.

“We’d meet every day at the gym, have a great workout, and go somewhere healthy to eat,” she says of the early days of dating Christian. “Wellness always made us feel good, and that’s kind of how we landed.”

The couple welcomed their first child, Grant, in 2015 and tied the knot soon after. Embracing parenthood and a life of relaxed wellness, they settled in the Hamptons, where they spent weekends sailing, running, and basking in the sunshine at the beach. When Grant was hospitalized for three weeks with meningitis, Sadlier decided to take a pause from work to devote herself to caring for him.

In 2017, Sadlier was pregnant with her and Christian’s second child, Pierce, and the growing family moved to Seattle for Christian’s work. Shortly after giving birth to Pierce, Sadlier felt compelled to pick up her paintbrushes again. “There was so much love and gratitude inside me—for my husband and our boys—and I wanted to create something that conveyed the emotions I felt,” she says of the abstract paintings she gifted to friends and interior designers.

Over the next few years, the family moved around the West Coast, each new home influencing Sadlier’s art in different ways.

When the COVID pandemic hit, the family retreated to Palm Springs for fresh air and long hikes in the desert. The stunning surroundings inspired Sadlier, and she began sketching and M AY/ JUNE 2 0 2 5

painting beautiful mountains, palm trees, and other local imagery.

The following summer, they headed to Newport Beach to soak up the ocean’s revitalizing effects and explore new activities like surfing. There, Sadlier embraced an art form known as “found objects” (objet trouvé in French), which is the process of transforming discarded materials into captivating works of art.

It was then that she began taking old and unwanted surfboards and turning them into vibrant abstract wall pieces. She would post her creations to Instagram, which led to her selling pieces to local designers she connected with, among others. Soon, word spread about her art, and she began getting commissions from people in places like Connecticut and Texas, where good surfing conditions are tougher to come by.

While the Sadliers loved the vibe of Newport Beach (and

continue to visit every summer), the active family yearned for a home with perennial access to outdoor activities and other healthful pursuits. That’s when they landed in Jupiter. “We really wanted to live this rounded-out lifestyle where we could be outside all year, have access to great schools, and raise the boys in a community where they can grow up with the same kids,” Sadlier says. “We’re thankful we found it all in one place.”

The couple quickly set about turning their new space into their dream home—which meant not only creating an art studio for Sadlier but also making their home a sort of wellness retreat with amenities like a workout room, a Pilates studio, red light therapy, and a cold plunge. “As someone with ADHD, moving my body is crucial for focusing my thoughts and remaining present,” Sadlier says. “There’s also an outdoor sauna that helps with heart health, which is very important, and whenever Christian or I have a hard day, we’ll jump into the cold plunge pool for a mental reset.”

With her family settled in Jupiter, Sadlier was eager to establish connections in the area’s interior design community to increase her visibility as an artist and find commission opportunities. She says Nicole Hurd of Hurd Homes was not only her first client, but she also became her mentor. “She would suggest other designers to follow up with and brought me in on a project she was working on,” says Sadlier. Their collaboration on several projects culminated in a favorite commission: three vertically mounted surfboards, each painted in a cohesive color palette with a limewash stucco finish.

Sadlier’s surfboard art has since caught the attention of some of the world’s most iconic brands across fashion, food, and lifestyle. Last fall, she was invited by Travis Matthew to create a custom surfboard live at the grand opening of their Long Beach store. At the Kendra Scott launch event for the Yellow Rose collection in San Diego, she brought a coastal cowboy theme to life on a custom surfboard.

Nespresso also tapped her to craft a stunning abstract design, now proudly displayed at their Newport Beach location. Her most recent commission? A set of surfboards for Jo Malone’s launch of the Beach Blossom fragrance. “They threw events at several stunning venues, including a warehouse in Chelsea that was transformed into an epic beach party,” says Sadlier. “It was pure magic.”

In her latest venture, Sadlier has partnered with Chelsea Viau of Chelsea Lane & Co. to create an

exclusive wallpaper collection that, at press time, was set to launch in May. The collection features two striking designs: one inspired by organic stone and marble elements Sadlier painted, deconstructed, and then pieced together into one provocative pattern; the other a playful design depicting alligators, oranges, bicycles, backgammon sets, and other fun South Florida–inspired motifs offered in a trio of colors. She also designed a custom sketch wallpaper and matching coffee sleeves for The Seed in Jupiter, providing a fresh take on her signature abstract style.

Despite her busy schedule, Sadlier still manages to make time for other passions, including volunteering and fundraising for local charities like Quantum House and Best Buddies. She also spends time focusing on a special project she launched years ago while living on the West Coast—The Darling Collection. While preparing for a gallery installation in Seattle in 2019/2020, Sadlier had an epiphany: “I thought, people will always buy art, so how incredible would it be if it was fine art created by their children?” she recalls. So she started The Darling Collection, an art-focused program for children and their families she hosts in her home studio. Children are provided with materials (canvases, paint, brushes) to create largescale works—not “kid art,” but fine art masterpieces that their families want to display in their homes.

Sadlier has continued with The Darling Collection at her Jupiter home, hosting two to four families a month. “I’m always humbled when parents tell me how happy the experience makes their kids feel,” she says. “It’s very meaningful giving children the opportunity to feel good about being creators.”

Above all else, Sadlier’s greatest joy is the time she gets to spend with her husband and two sons— outdoors in the fresh, healthy air. “I love the weekends because we enjoy taking family walks in the nature preserve across the street with our miniature schnauzer, Russell, and playing tennis in the afternoon,” she says.

“We belong to the boat club, so we like to get out on the water, and at sunset, we’ll hit the beach and throw a Frisbee. Sometimes Christian will get on his DJ turntable, and we’ll dance to music around the house and pool.”

Sadlier and her family may have moved around a lot before arriving in Jupiter, but she says they are here to stay: “Living here has been such an uplifting experience. The community is so supportive, and even though I’m the new kid in town, I’ve never felt more welcome. I’m so grateful for that.”

AWARENESS A local family bought an RV and embarked on the journey of a lifetime, spreading awareness and raising money for a genetic disorder that affects their young daughter

milia Turner is traveling in style. The 7-year-old has a spacious bedroom in the 43-foot fifth wheel camper that her family now calls home. Since last August, Emilia and her family (mom Sarah, dad Robbie, and dog Charley) have been traveling across the country in the RV, taking to the road to raise awareness of a little-known genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis, which Emilia was diagnosed with when she was just an infant. At press time, the journey had taken the Turners to 13 states and 7 national parks and taught each of

them a few life lessons along the way.

“It’s been a lesson in flexibility and change,” says Sarah. “We are pivot professionals now.” She is referring not only to life on the road, but also to the uncertain nature of Emilia’s diagnosis. Neurofibromatosis affects the nervous system, causing the growth of tumors (called neurofibromas), among other symptoms. Emilia’s medical team has been actively monitoring a brain tumor on her optic nerve that was discovered when she was 5 years old. The tumor, combined with some life-changing moments in Robbie and Sarah’s lives, was the catalyst for the family’s decision to embark on their journey.

that same year, Robbie was in a serious head-on collision. “I South Florida natives Sarah and Robbie (Sarah grew up in was hit by a drunk driver, and I broke my spine and my hip,” West Palm Beach, Robbie in Palm City) met at a party in 2011 he says. “It was just chaos that year.” and married four years later, welcoming baby Emilia in 2018.

In the years following Emilia’s diagnosis, the Turners monitored their daughter by observing her progress and visiting her physician team regularly. “She was just the smartest kid, babbling and talking,” says Sarah. “A lot of families [of children with NF] see learning disabilities, and we weren’t seeing that, so you hold on to the couple little pieces of hope as you get past every milestone.”

Two thousand twenty-one was a pivotal year for the Turner family. While Emilia was undergoing chemotherapy to treat her brain tumor, Sarah’s father was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. state and every national park,” says Robbie.

But their adventure was about more than “living life” and having fun. Robbie, who was an avid runner and cyclist before the car accident, had the idea to use the trip to get back in shape while spreading awareness about NF and raising funds for research efforts focused on finding a cure. He pinpointed races along the family’s route that he could participate in, which totaled 12 and counting at press time in March. “One of the races was a marathon in San Antonio,” he says. “That was my first marathon since the car accident.” The San Antonio marathon was a fundraising effort for the Children’s Tumor Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to driving research, expanding knowledge, and advancing care for the NF community.

NF affects about 1 in 2,000 worldwide, and right now, there are no preventative measures and no cure. While NF itself isn’t fatal, it can lead to complications such as tumors

and certain cancers that can be fatal. NF diagnoses are split into three categories: NF1, NF2, and SWN (schwannomatosis).

Emilia has NF1, the most common type. The condition manifests differently in each person affected, with symptoms ranging from hearing loss and bone deformities to neurological problems and café au lait spots or freckles on the skin.

It’s impossible to know what symptoms someone might experience—and that is perhaps one of the biggest challenges of living with the disorder. “The hardest thing about this is the unknown,” says Sarah. “There is a laundry list of possibilities, one worse than the next. You just don’t know, and it makes you feel very helpless.”

Emilia has some hypermobility issues, which occasionally affect her coordination, and some issues with her endocrine system too. She also has café au lait spots, skin freckling, and Lisch nodules (eye bumps). “Over half of all kids [with NF] have some other neurological difference like autism or ADHD,” says Sarah. “So, we are actually very lucky.” Emilia shows very few signs of either of these conditions.

Sarah has become an advocate for NF awareness and a source of help and support for other families struggling with a new diagnosis. “I am on the Volunteer Leadership Committee and the Patient Engagement Board for the Children’s Tumor Foundation,” she says. “A lot of what we do is just talking to people at campsites and telling people what we are doing.”

Her wardrobe these days consists largely of shirts emblazoned with the Children’s Tumor Foundation logo and mission. “Just to provide insight and connect families to resources and help during the unknown is so important because as a parent, you feel really helpless,” she says.

Since last August, the Turners’ journey has taken them through Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Texas, and Florida, among other states, and they have visited beautiful parks and other sites along the way—including New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia, Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience in Texas, and Hilton Head, South Carolina, where they went on a dolphin sightseeing cruise. Asked what her favorite stop has been thus far, Emilia takes a minute to decide before declaring: “I think I like the Smoky Mountains the best or the cave,” speaking of Mammoth Cave National Park in Tennessee. Sarah counts Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas as a highlight. “Robbie and I both did the Hot Springs historic spa,” she says. Robbie describes the unique experience: “You go in a steam box and your head sticks out of this metal box.” The three Turners laugh at the fun memory.

In February, the family arrived in Chicago for Emilia’s sixmonth checkup at Lurie Children’s Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors there found that her brain tumor had shown some changes that might be concerning, and Emilia will now have to be checked more regularly, every three months. Since the family’s travels often take them to rural areas far from major medical centers, that means the future of their road trip—much like Emilia’s condition—is uncertain.

“We’ll see after the next scan, but I think we’re back in Florida for now,” says Sarah. “The adventure never changes. We’ve had detailed plans with campsites and races, and we’ve had to scrap them and start over. What’s one more time? I feel incredibly privileged and so lucky that we are even able to do this.”

FINDING INSPIRATION Where to begin? In my artwork, I believe everything from a radish to a street sign can be a source of inspiration, and it can tell a complicated story. Investigative journalist and friend Paula Woodward is a beacon of hope in the pursuit of truth, accuracy, and fairness. Storytellers of all kinds have taught me to lace heart and emotion into the power of words and pictures. I still refer to children’s books I loved as a child. My family members always go toward their interests with vigor and joy. And I meet new people every day whose stories move me.

It’s a fun design by my husband, who is a golf course architect. A quick driving tour of my favorite banyan trees, giant-scale objects, and public art before catching the latest exhibit at the Norton Museum of Art. Then I’m gathering up my nearest and dearest artist friends to play with something oddball and creative. I’d close out the day with my husband’s cooking or meeting friends at Leftovers, Hog Snappers, or Carmine’s in Jupiter.

TOP LOCAL SPOTS Lighthouse ArtCenter has incredible classes, inspiring staff members, and gorgeous exhibits! The campus has grown to include new studio spaces and equipment recently, and you can take classes over a few hours or several weeks. Riverbend Park is such a beautiful step away from the hubbub, and you can spot Florida wildlife from the pathways and waterways. Such a peaceful way to get exercise! TGL is a brand-new golf league you can watch at home on ESPN or from the SoFi Center on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens.

RITUAL TO UNWIND Painting, painting, and more painting! Whenever I want to truly connect with who I am and feel myself restored, I go back to creativity.

It’s meditation for me. Even brainstorming a painting helps me unwind. I’m also a huge fan of logic and brain puzzles, and I do most of The New York Times puzzles every day.

pring is in the air, and local pastry chef Halie Wallace is feeling inspired. Wallace, who has been the executive pastry chef at Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa since November, has created some truly special desserts for the resort (including its main restaurant, ONA Coastal Cuisine) to celebrate the season.

The Enchanted Violet is made with vanilla bean panna cotta layered with blue matcha, violet, and hibiscus flowers, delivering subtle aromatic flavors and a burst of colorful spring cheer. “This is naturally beautiful as it does not contain a drop of artificial coloring—it’s nature at its finest,” says the chef. Another creation, Not Your Grandma’s Garden, is a masterpiece of chocolate mousse sitting on a magical bed of flowers and mushrooms, with fluffy matcha moss, mini Champagne strawberries, and refreshing raspberry sorbet.

Says Wallace: “This one’s for my grandmother, who always had the most beautiful gardens and still has an active green thumb today.”

Wallace, who graduated from Johnson & Wales University in Miami with a degree in baking and pastry arts in 2015, worked in the kitchens at Halie Wallace The Breakers Palm Beach, Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, and Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa before coming to Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island last June. “I’m excited for a future here,” she says. “This is where I see myself settling down.”

hen one door closes, a new one opens—and serves you breakfast and lunch. In February 2020, Fantini’s Italian Restaurant moved to a larger spot a few doors down in North Stuart Plaza, leaving the old space vacant.

Last December, owner Jimmy Fantin opened a new eatery in the original space: Elm City Cafe.

Once again, Fantin is honoring his Connecticut roots through food. While Fantini’s is known for its New Haven–style “apizza,” Elm City Cafe is all about the BECSPK (bacon, egg, cheese, salt, pepper, ketchup). The breakfast sandwich served on a kaiser roll is a staple for Connecticut

commuters, says Fantin, who imports the buns from New York. Bagels and Junior’s carrot cake are also imported from up north. “There are so many people from the Northeast who long for these staple deli items, bagels, and pastries,” says Fantin. “That’s the niche I’m filling.”

Another breakfast favorite at the café is the French toast, made with thick brioche bread, which Fantin says makes it “fluffier, higher, and deeper.”

Lunch items include the signature hot dog platter, which comes with two beef Hummel Bros. dogs (a New Haven– based company), slit top to bottom so that when they’re cooked on the steel griddle, the sizzle chars the dogs, giving them a snap when bitten into. The platter comes with a choice of French fries, coleslaw, or chips.

Back in February 2024, Jupiter residents Angela and Vincent Cannella were watching Shark Tank reruns when they saw an episode that featured Crispy Cones. The intriguing concept was an ice cream cone made with grilled pastry dough, flavored with sugar and cinnamon, and “corked” with a spread like Nutella, peanut butter, or strawberry jam. They were sold.

A year later, they opened their own Crispy Cones franchise at Seminole Shoppes in Palm Beach Gardens. “Going into retirement, we felt we would now have a lot of free time and figured it would be nice to have something to keep us busy,” Vinny says.

Choose from chocolate, vanilla, or a mixed swirl of both soft-serve flavors (plus a weekly special), assembled on the cone in layers and enhanced with up to three toppings (including nuts, berries, candy, and more). Add a drizzle of Nutella, caramel, cookie butter, or raspberry sauce.

Crispy Cones also features a monthly specialty cone flavor, which is kept top secret until the day it is released.

hef Michael Rolchigo has had so much success with his Italian restaurant, Tavolena, that when the Jupiter storefront next door became available, he snatched it up with an eye on expansion. Now fans of his cooking can pop into the new Tavolena Sandwich & Bakery shop for a delicious lunch or sweet treat to-go (or dine in at one of the intimate indoor and outdoor tables).

The hearty sandwiches ($16-$20) are much more than meat and veggies between slices of bread—they tell a story of times spent with the chef’s (late) Italian grandmother in Utica, New York. Case in point: For Lena’s Meatball Smash, Chef Michael uses his grandmother’s recipe for the gargantuan meatballs served panini-style on homemade grilled garlic semolina. “It’s so special to me because I can taste part of my childhood,” says Rolchigo. The Big Lufthansa is packed with imported ham, spicy capicola, salami, crispy pepperoni, Auricchio provolone, veggies, mayo, and red wine Italian vinaigrette,

while favorites like veal cutlet and a turkey BLT are also on the menu. Meat-free options include the Capri (mozzarella, tomato, arugula, basil, pesto), Mortadella Panini (mortadella, provolone pistachio crema), and Melanzana (eggplant, cheese, tomato).

The bread alone is worth a visit. Fresh ciabatta, semolina, and rustic Italian breads are baked daily in-house for the sandwiches and are also available to purchase by the loaf.

The sandwich and bakery shop also sells salads, Italian quiches, pizzas, pinsas (Roman flat breads), homemade gelato, sorbet, and delicious pastries like tiramisu, Lena’s apple cake, and Chef Michael’s Utica tomato pie.
