Season for Reasons

O

ur event season is in full swing with all kinds of charitable gatherings happening in February including the famous Paws and Claws Gala for the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and Ladies’ Night Out at the Mansion at Tuckahoe to benefit the Children’s Museum. There are also plenty of Valentine’s Day events to attend. This season, our pages are overflowing with wonderful ways to help out locally. As many of you know, Stuart Magazine is transitioning as we have just begun our adventure with Hour Media, and I am returning to my roots at Palm Beach Media Group (Palm Beach Illustrated and Naples Illustrated, among others). This is a wonderful new beginning for the magazine, and I couldn’t be happier to be included in the process. I am thrilled to be out and about more than ever. We will increase our circulation and will continue to be your local, reliable source for everything on the Treasure Coast. As readers, you will be greeted with revamped editorial and enhanced local content. Expect to see us fully reloaded in late spring. As we think about love this Valentine’s Day, I remember those early days in childhood when I would go to school with a box of valentines, hoping I would receive one from that special someone. I encourage you to visit a loved one who is in a facility, nursing home or alone this year. I plan to bring a box of candy or a special card to a family member who resides in a rehab center. This holiday is not just a time for love birds; it’s a time to show love to someone with hardships when they might not expect it. Have a giving and loving heart this February!

Katie Marie Tulip & Christopher John McVay By Megan Ayscue WHO THEY ARE: Katie, 39, and Chris, 48, run their own busi-

ness, Nautical Marine Services. It is a mobile marine company that specializes in annual services and maintenance on jet drives, diesel engines and joystick operations systems. Chris and his son, Ethan, are the technicians while Katie runs the business.

Chris, he was down on one knee saying so sweetly, ‘Katie Tulip, will you marry me?’ To which I said, yes, of course!” ON THE THEME: The nautical-themed beach wedding used

turquoise, the couple’s favorite color, throughout the décor. Sea glass, a lobster trap, seashells, a dock pier cake stand and chocolate fish cupcake decorations also made an appearance. For “something blue,” Katie had a patch with an anchor, her and Chris’ first initials and the wedding date sewn on the inside of the bottom of her dress.

Katie went to train for work in Southwest Harbor, Maine, where Chris is from, she fell in love with the area. “It has this beautiful, peaceful and loving feeling in the air, so when I came back to the facility in Stuart, I was telling Chris about it. We connected in a way beyond a friendship and working relationship.”

ON THE PROPOSAL: Katie has a 17-foot console boat that

Chris knows she loves and adores, so one day they went out cruising. “He couldn’t wait to propose, so as soon as the boat was pulling off the dock at the boat ramp, he took the boat out of gear,” Katie says. “I thought something was wrong, so I turned around to look at the engine, and when I turned back to look at

It was the first time we had all ever been together since we went to Southampton College 20 years ago, but with Chris with us this time.”

ON PERSONAL TOUCHES: The couple wanted to include

as many local businesses in their wedding as possible, so they organized the event themselves. They also made as much of the décor as they could and wrote their own ceremony, while Katie’s sister put it all together with the details.

DRIFT KITCHEN & BAR

ocated on the second floor of Hutchinson Shores Resort and Spa, Drift Kitchen & Bar is a beautifully designed restaurant with a modern, beach-inspired interior and panoramic views of the Atlantic. The focal point of the space is a long, dazzling bar with a pizza oven at one end. The restaurant is open to the public for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu at Drift features a variety of small plates, sandwiches, pastas, entrees and wood-fired pizzas. Chef Michael Vogler specializes in Italian food and is known for his housemade pasta. My husband and I stopped in for dinner recently and started things off by sharing the antipasto board, an impressive array that included a selection of cheese and salami, dried fruits, olives, nuts and fig jam. At the suggestion of Lee Lee, our server, I ordered the Duroc center-cut pork chop for my

entrée, a bone-in chop coated with a tangy Carolina barbecue glaze. It came with creamy macand-cheese (house-made pasta, of course) and blistered green beans. The pork chop was moist and delicious, a perfect balance of sweet and tangy. My husband took advantage of chef Mike’s pasta-making skills and ordered the bucatini carbonara. The carbonara, which can be a tricky dish to execute, was just right—perfect strands of pasta glossed with a rich, silky sauce and punctuated by sweet peas, cremini mushrooms and crispy pancetta. We thought we had no room for dessert, but Lee Lee raved about the ricotta cheesecake, so we quickly caved. It turned out to be a wise choice. The cake was light and creamy, accompanied by a fresh raspberry sauce and vanilla-infused whipped cream. Make it a point to visit Drift Kitchen & Bar soon—I’m sure glad we did.

n this increasingly digital age, home automation is becoming more common and should not be overlooked in a luxury property. Top-of-the-line technology includes systems that focus on convenience, safety, security and efficiency. Convenience features are the epitome of luxury as they are far from a necessity. These features encompass the control of small and large appliances, home entertainment systems and other household gadgets, all of which can be done with a smartphone, smart device or voice command. On the way home, you can initiate controls to start the coffee pot, set mood lighting and turn on relaxing music so upon entry, your home is a welcoming retreat from the day’s stress. Safety features are not nearly as exciting as those that exist for convenience, but they give peace of mind with systems that detect water leaks, fires and carbon monoxide leaks, sending notifications directly to a smart device. This can be especially appealing to luxury homeowners who spend significant periods of time away from home. Security options allow homeowners to lock entry doors, close garage doors and detect unexpected motion and entry all from afar with a smart device. These systems can connect with a central command station that sends police, fire and other service personnel as needed. Efficiency features extend to operating mechanical systems (AC, for example) and lighting—again from afar—to save on utility costs. They can be controlled via smart device and voice command. Setting up home automation requires careful planning and consultation with experts in the field. It is ideal if this can be done during the construction phase, but any home can be retrofitted with home automation features that promote convenience, safety, security and efficiency.

THE FISHING CHRONICLES

Meet the designers of

PATTY DOWNING INTERIORS

Daniel Russo, known on air as “Dano,” is the executive producer and host of “The Love Doctors” on Real Radio 94.3 FM and 101.7 FM. He is a seasoned angler with more than 25 years of experience.

WHAT LIES BENEATH

I

was fishing inside the inlet with a good friend not too long ago. We were on his flats boat right at 3 feet, and as we moved from spot to spot, the depths held as the tide stayed put. We were targeting the usual suspects: tarpon, snook and redfish with the occasional bycatch. Excellent weather and a perfect moon phase provided great conditions for angling. The high point of our day was finding an oyster bed just as the sun was setting. This small area of warm, nutrient-rich water holds a significant amount of fish. But as the tide pushed out, it dragged the boat and created a cringe-inducing sound no boat owner ever wants to hear: crunch! The boat had drifted a little too close and was bouncing on a mound of new and old oyster shells. These areas are teeming with underwater life, which brought to mind other areas that anglers must be mindful of. As I mentioned, inshore anglers like to find these beds and small reef systems. For offshore anglers, it’s bottom fishing on a reef. Even pleasure boaters like to pull up to the shoreline of a shoal or island for a break from the monotonous rolling motion of the water. Be aware of what lies beneath. We must be hypersensitive to these breeding grounds. They are a nursery for juveniles and habitual eating areas for many species of fish and crustaceans. Not to mention, stepping on them can have just as dire consequences for feet as running the boat’s hull over them. The reef systems, shell beds and breeding grounds are perilously close to collapse. Our interactions can have devastating results if we are not mindful of how and where we intend on angling. As you anchor up on a reef or beach on a shoal, be mindful to not drag the metal spears of your anchor across these delicate, living and muchneeded reefs and shell beds. They are a precious resource that keeps the ocean’s food chains in a state of plentiful bounty. All in all, have fun, be aware and go catch a fish! Contact him at dano@iheartmedia.com.

Dual-County Denizen

After putting in a full day of work on the Gold Coast, Jim Mitchell returns to the Treasure Coast for rest and relaxation.

H

e has called the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach his home away from home for 28 years. The chief operations officer of the performing arts center in West Palm Beach lives on the water in Stuart and commutes five days a week—or more—to the downtown destination for lovers of stage and show. “After all this time, it’s not a drudge to get up and out the door,” Jim Mitchell, 65, says. “I enjoy going to work every day, and as long as that keeps happening, I’ll keep showing up.” The avid angler has a 46-foot Sportfish and an Albury 23-foot Center Console docked in his back yard. “Stuart is just incredible with its rivers, inlet and proximity to the Bahamas,” Mitchell says. “A true waterman’s dream. In fact, to quote the Van Halen boys, it’s just like livin’ in paradise.” His wife, Judy, serves as the Kravis Center’s chief executive officer, making the couple colleagues. They have shared their place of employment since 1991. “Judy is the queen,” he says. “She’s in charge of everything, and I report to her.” In addition to responsibilities that include overseeing all facilities on the 10.5-acre

campus as well as security operations, theater production and front-of-the-house event management, he is also heading the construction of the Kravis 2020 Expansion Project. “It’s impressive even to me, and I’ve been there coming up on my 29th year,” he says. “Everyone is thrilled. It’s been very well received.” Highlights of the capital improvements are a new 270-space valet parking garage; a 6,000-square-foot expansion of the main lobby; major improvements to the existing self-parking garage; and the addition of electronic way finders—more than 100 of them—around the grounds. “It was a campus-wide project,” he says. “It affected every corner of the property. I take great pride in it.” What is your favorite aspect of the Kravis 2020 Expansion Project? The lobby expansion and new plaza, which create an incredible new vista as you approach the center on Okeechobee Boulevard from the east. Explain the dynamic of working not only with but also for your wife. Part of the success is we have a tremendous

amount of respect for each other’s strengths. Judy is very good with board management, donor cultivation and fundraising, which are critical to the survival of any performing arts center. I’m much more of a nuts-and-bolts person, and my focus is on the facilities, performances, audience safety and overall experience and the people who make all of that happen. We just have complementary talents that work very well together. Also—and it’s not intentional—I’m on one side of the building, and she’s on the other side. We’re just split up that way. Sometimes, I don’t see her at all or even talk to her throughout the day. Do you have any retirement plans? Not quite yet. I still have a few things to finish up on the 2020 project. Where do you spend your free time? We love to spend time in The Abacos fishing and spearfishing. Is there anything else you would like to accomplish as COO of the Kravis Center? Well, there is still one piece of property left to be developed, so you never know.

Healing, Survival and Service The Inner Truth Project’s Mindi Fetterman celebrates a decade of helping those in need.

G

rowing up between Chicago and South Florida, Mindi Fetterman endured verbal, physical and emotional abuse by her mother, while her mother’s boyfriend molested Fetterman at age 7. By 16, Fetterman was drugged and gang raped. At 23, it happened again. She was convinced she was responsible for what kept happening to her. “I truly thought I was worthless,” Fetterman says. “I thought I deserved the abuse from my mom and the different men.” After struggling through her childhood and teenage years, Fetterman began a path of healing and sobriety in her twenties. She credits her education at Florida Atlantic University, during which she received a degree in women’s studies, as the catalyst for her activism. In the years following, Fetterman counseled women and provided clinic defense at Presidential Women’s Center in West Palm Beach. She also founded the nonprofit organization The Inner Truth Project in 2011, based in Port St. Lucie, which offers therapeutic services to survivors of sexual trauma and provides education on prevention strategies and trauma to Martin, Okeechobee and 30

Indian River counties. After nearly 10 years of servicing the Treasure Coast, Fetterman says, “This is just the tip of the iceberg.” What inspired you to seek out help and change your life? When I was 23, I was introduced to the love of my life who is now my husband, Adam. He’s the one who really sat me down and said I needed help. He got me into recovery, and after I had some sobriety under my belt, he suggested I seek out a therapist. His family took me under their wing. They believed in me and my story. I never had that kind of validation in my life. It was truly my turning point from living as a victim and allowing myself to be susceptible to taking charge of my life. How did you transition from your recovery to helping others heal? I started slow. I would frequent small groups to share my experiences. That’s when people started to say to me, ‘You’re telling my story. This happened to me, too.’ I lived my whole life thinking I was alone, but then I realized there are so many other people out there who have gone through the same thing.

That was a groundbreaking revelation and made me realize I had to do something. Tell us about the growth of The Inner Truth Project since its inception. Once I realized how much the community needed a safe space for survivors to come together, I sat down with my husband, who has a background in nonprofit and start-up law, and figured out how I was going to make it happen. We thought that if we started Inner Truth, people would start to come. And we were right. It didn’t take long for people to start calling and sharing stories. They realized they don’t have to be silent anymore either. As you approach Inner Truth’s 10th anniversary, what are your goals? We’re looking to get men engaged in the conversation. We are never going to change society until we have everyone on board. We also want to help more of our male survivors share their stories. Long term, we hope to create a program and a space where survivors can spend an extended period of time to learn different types of healing practices, instead of attending workshops during the day and returning home in the evenings.

Traditional to TRANSITIONAL A KITCHEN UPDATE EVOLVES INTO A WHOLE HOME REDESIGN. By Jana Soeldner Danger Photography by Ron Rosenzweig

M

any redesigns begin with the simple idea of removing a wall to create a more open floor plan or sprucing up a specific room. That was the case when the owners of a two-story home in Jupiter asked designer Lisa Lalaounis of The Decorators Unlimited in Palm Beach Gardens to update their kitchen. The project soon evolved into revamping their entire 8,000-square-foot, fourbedroom, six-bath house. The owners, Dan Reedy of Onshore

Construction and his wife, Missy, wanted the traditional home to have a more modern, but not necessarily contemporary, look. Lalaounis set out to establish a fresh, transitional aesthetic that will be stylish for years to come. A graduate of the International Academy of Design & Technology in Tampa, Lalaounis has been creating beautiful interiors for 25 years. “I’ve always loved the fine arts, and I wanted to marry my passion for them with a career,” she says. A linear chandelier with gleaming prism crystals hangs above the walnut table.

GETTING STARTED To make the exterior walls work better with a new roof, Lalaounis changed the paint color from red to white and put doors with opaque glass panels bordered with bronze-finished metal on the quadruple garage. Inside, she chose a white, cream, beige and linen color palette. “I wanted a classic feel for longevity, and I also wanted it to be very comfortable and inviting, she says. Changing the dark espresso wood flooring to more Florida-friendly blonde tones created a brighter, lighter ambiance, and removing a wall between the living and dining rooms opened breathtaking views.

created a dramatic feature wall. In front of it are twin sofas covered in linen chenille and two double-tiered cocktail tables with acrylic bases that make the wood tops and shelves beneath appear to float. Two swivel recliners are upholstered in taupe channel fabric, and the color of a polished metal table between them is the same as the wooden coffee tables. A cream and beige area rug made from a wool and bamboo-silk blend softens the floor. On the other side of the space, a wet bar with a creamy marble top and waterfall edge is illuminated from beneath. Stools have walnut legs, while seats and backs are upholstered with beige, gray and taupe chenille. linear chandelier suspended from a metal canopy, creating continuity with the fixtures in the foyer and breakfast room. KITCHEN & SUMMER KITCHEN In the kitchen, ceiling beams match those in the dining room. A large freezer and refrigerator are on one wall; an adjacent wall houses two ovens. Walnut paneling clads the kitchen walls, and a loadbearing column is disguised with lighted shelving to look like an architectural feature. A peninsula with a waterfall edge that matches the ceiling beams is topped with white-veined black quartzite, and a light bridge attached to the ceiling illuminates the workspace. To create both continuity and drama, Lalaounis installed a large black quartzite wall panel above the range. Lining the top of the wall are walnut-fronted storage cabinets—designed by Juan Beraldi of Artistry Fine Woodwork—without telltale pulls to identify them. 52

“It’s a really clean look,” Lalaounis says. A walnut island containing a microwave drawer and a corner sink is crowned with more black quartzite; stools have white cushions that contrast strikingly with washed gray maple frames and gray cane backs. To establish a breakfast room, the designer decided to enclose part of the patio. A round oak table with a taupe finish seats four; chairs have curved oak legs and rail pullouts to avoid fingerprints on the white upholstered backs. The circular chandelier with crystal cylinders similar to fixtures in the dining room and foyer hangs from a polished-nickel medallion. A sideboard with a taupe oak base and a top shelf supported by metal legs is set against a wall with a TV screen above. In the adjoining summer kitchen, the floor is covered with largescale gray concrete porcelain tile. Complementing the floor is the gray concrete top of the dining table. num frames have thick gray and white cushions. There’s a large grill, and glassfronted cabinets offer display space. The dramatic backsplash and countertop are made from Calcatta porcelain slabs. These, as well as the countertops in the kitchen proper, as well as other areas in the home, were fabricated by Frank Laflamme of Accurate Tile and Marble. A separate seating area features two aluminum-framed, deep-seating sofas and two recliners. Twin spherical chandeliers with iron frames and casually elegant interior candelabras light the space.

The media room is an ideal gathering place.

ENTERTAINMENT The media room is a perfect place for watching a movie, shooting pool or enjoying a beverage. Taupe and beige grass cloth covers the walls, and Venetian plaster adds interest to the ceiling. Tiered seats are covered in dark brown leather, while a gray maple bar behind them is raised enough so the screen is still easily visible. Stools are taupe leather with polished chrome bases. A pool table sits in the middle of the space. For more active recreation, Lalaounis transformed one of the garage bays into a golf-simulation space. Players can feel as if they’re practicing their drives on top courses, while a dark granite bar serves as a stylish 19th hole. MASTER SUITE In the master bedroom, wood flooring laid in a herringbone pattern similar to that in the foyer is the backdrop for a dramatic bed wall paneled in walnut and accented with vertical LED strips. The headboard, which runs across the wall beyond the bed itself, is upholstered in mocha chenille velvet, as is the bed frame. At the foot is a bench covered in playful leopard-patterned chenille. “I wanted to have some fun, and I fell in love with the fabric,” Lalaounis says. A ring-shaped, fractured-glass chandelier with polished-nickel accents hangs from the ceiling, and cylindershaped crackled glass pendants are suspended on both sides of the bed. A recessed seating area features two polished-chrome chaises with faux-mink cushions. A reflective mirror film provides privacy on double-glass doors framed in bronze that open to a hallway leading to the master bath. It features a freestanding soaking tub and a large shower with a frameless glass door. Onyx porcelain tile covers the floor and countertops, while a floating shelf provides storage for linens. FRESH YET CLASSIC Wood, crystal and metals provide a classic look in this home, while a more open floor plan, fresh finishes and stylish new furnishings create living spaces that will bring joy for years to come.

A bench at the foot of the bed is covered in chic leopardpatterned chenille.

Patty O’Connell has lived in Stuart/Palm City area since 1969 after her family moved to Florida. She spent 26 years in the radio business at family owned local radio stations WSTU/WHLG. 6 years with CBS and Palm Beach Radio Broadcasting, she pursued a lifelong dream of owning a coastal home décor and gift store in historic Downtown Stuart. May of 2008 Gumbo Limbo was originally located in a 600 square ft space at what is now the Old Colorado Inn, the retail store has seen two expansions, and is now located in 2700 sq. ft. featuring coastal home décor, gifts, clothing and accessories and a holiday wonderland during Thanksgiving and Christmas. In August of 2015, Patty opened Gumbo Limbo Coastal Kids, a children’s clothing and accessory store for newborn to 5 years old, the stores are co-located on Osceola Street and employ a staff of 7. Patty is past president, current vice president of the Downtown Business Association of Stuart and remains active on the board of directors. She serves as co-chair of the joint promotions committee operated by the DBA of Stuart and Stuart Mainstreet and is involved in planning the events and promotions for the district.
