’m so thrilled to be here at Stuart Magazine—and even more excited to show you our revamped design. As you flip through these pages, you may notice some changes to the look and flow of things—a cleaner design and more structured sections with some new regular columns added to the mix. Let me help you navigate a little: “Radar” (beginning on page 19) is devoted to all things local—from Hobe Sound up to Fort Pierce—including stories on the arts, interesting people who make up the fabric of Martin and St. Lucie Counties, events and happenings to know about, and cool places to explore. “Flavor” (page 57) highlights the local cuisine scene. And don’t worry, everyone’s favorite social photos remain—filed under “Hot Shots” (page 66). You’re also going to be seeing more fashion features, shot on location in the area and showcasing some of the hottest trends. With wedding season upon us, this particular issue is packed with info for brides- and grooms-to-be: venues to fit every personality, incredible cake designs, and more. Plus, take a peek at one Stuart couple’s gorgeous coastalthemed wedding (page 46), and definitely don’t miss the breathtaking bridal fashion shoot we did at Rockin H Ranch in Palm City (page 34). I truly hope you enjoy this issue of Stuart Magazine, and I look forward to many more to come. Peace and blessings,

Head to Jensen Beach to witness the magic of Surfers for Autism, a nonprofit founded in South Florida 12 years ago that helps socialize kids with autism through the power of waves. Every show, every performance, is special to me with [Kentucky Thunder]. It’s almost like a jazz band in a way. It’s freeform—we may start on the same note, but we may not end on the same note. And that’s the beauty of this music.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT KENTUCKY THUNDER? They’re great! They’re a bunch of young guys who push me, challenge me, and make me want to be a better musician.
BEING FROM KENTUCKY, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT FLORIDA? I’ve always enjoyed coming to Florida and playing music. A lot of people from Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee have moved here for warmth over the years, and they’re first- and secondgeneration hillbillies like me. They like to come out and hear music from their roots, music from their homeland.
CONSERVATION STATION Honor Earth Day this year at Earth Fest, a unique event at The Children’s Museum in Jensen Beach that aims to teach future generations what they can do to help our planet. very first Friday of the month in Stuart, white tents rise along Colorado Avenue and the surrounding areas as artists set up their work. Bands unpack equipment to prepare for the evening’s performances, and businesses hold off on flipping their “closed” signs, as they stay open late to welcome artist displays. Dubbed “Creek Walk,” the monthly event launched in November is the latest expansion from the city’s newly formed Creek District of Arts & Entertainment. Board member Katie Gianni says the goal is to connect artists, the community, and local businesses as well as draw attention to the district. The event has certainly taken off: The February 7 Creek Walk welcomed more than 100 guests, with two dozen local businesses participating—double that of the inaugural event last fall. “It’s quite rewarding to see something like this come together as quickly as it has and become quite accessible within the community,” says Duncan Hurd of The Gilt Complex, a Creek Walk participant. During the event, area businesses including galleries, coffee shops, boutiques, pubs, and more open their doors to host local artists like Heather Ivins, whose work featuring landscapes and pets was shown at Gilt in February. “[The event offers] a really nice opportunity
From top: City Walk, to support local Heather Ivins; Fog on artists and, likeMcKinley Marina, Mark Stall; artist Lynn Morgan wise, for artists to with some of her work set draw people into up at The Gilt Complex during Creek Walk. businesses some people may not know about,” Ivins says. Strolling through the event, guests can hear music from on-site musicians as well as nearby venues like Terra Fermata Tiki Bar, which also hosts live painting during Creek Walks. As they mill about, visitors can take advantage of live painting demonstrations, listen to poets, and browse through crafts from jewelry makers and other artisans. “There are so many art forms,” Gianni says. “It doesn’t all have to be fine art.” Local photographer Mark Stall, who has displayed his work at the walk, says the event’s energy has been great and allows him to connect with individual
community members. “We get more one-on-one time,” he says. Other Creek Walk artists include Sophie Ledermé, who works in abstract shapes and vivid shades of acrylics and alcohol inks; Sue Klane, who offers vivid paint pours of ocean scenes; and Laura Kay’s gemstone, silver clay, coral, and fused-glass jewelry pieces. Gianni says she’s hopeful about the future of the new district and is eager to see more open galleries and studios, as well as more nontraditional artists. With momentum and enthusiasm going strong, that is almost sure to happen. “Artists provide the glue to a community,” Hurd says. “They bring beauty and life—and the more art and artists you have within a community, the more vibrant that community tends to be.” facebook.com/thecreekdistrict ❖

Launch from Lisa’s in Fort Pierce and explore two miles of the 340-acre Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. or spot osprey in the trees along with pelicans, herons, egrets, and roseate spoonbills. Bring your own kayak or paddleboard and launch at the east end of Cove Road for a two-hour roundtrip journey that winds through St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park. Alternatively, enter at the Stuart Causeway and explore nearby Bird Island. While you can’t actually land on the island because of its sanctuary status, you can paddle around and look for roosting wood storks. Or rent a clear kayak at Get Up and Go Kayaking (getupandgokayaking.com) and embark on a sunrise or sunset tour through Tucker Cove, Fort Pierce Inlet State Park, and the mangrove tunnels of Coon Island. Keep an eye out for manatees, dolphins, rays, birds, and turtles—and during night tours, you may even spot bioluminescent comb jellies.

This area is more creek-like than river, with the water becoming brackish and shallow depending on the tide and the flow from Ten Mile Creek. The waterway ends at a spillway on Gordy Road, about five miles upstream. Start farther downstream at River Park Marina (stlucieco.gov), where you can rent a canoe or kayak and staffers will provide a map for a threehour self-guided tour of the North Fork. The river flows heavily at times, making it challenging and exciting to paddle upriver. Keep an eye out for alligators! ❖

A Career in Bloom
KELLY SILIATO PROVIDES FRESH FLORA, ARRANGEMENTS, AND MORE AT HER FAMILY-OWNED (AND OPERATED) SHOP
A
t 18, Kelly Siliato was studying at Indian River Community College with plans to go into nursing. Instead, through art and photography classes, she discovered a passion for creativity. One summer, she took a part-time job at A Goode Florist in Stuart, answering phones and assisting customers. “I was fortunate enough to learn floral design hands-on from all of the amazingly talented and experienced ladies around me,” Siliato recalls. The fun summer job was slowly blooming into a lifelong career. She eventually took on a managerial position, running the shop for the owners when they were out of town. Eight years after Siliato started working at A Goode Florist, the owners—who had opened it in 1979—decided to put the store up for sale. “I jumped at the chance to own the place myself,” she says. “My parents were business owners [of Ron’s Auto Repair] for 30 years in Stuart, and now I’m proud to be a local business owner here as well.” Today, A Goode Florist is a family-run establishment. Siliato’s mom, Kathy, has been helping out ever since her daughter took ownership. Siliato’s niece also works at the store while attending college, and her husband and in-laws help out during busy holidays. “As for the rest of my staff, they are like family as well,” she says.

“When you come into my shop, you really feel like we care about you—and I think that makes a difference. I have so many great memories working and owning this flower shop. I have gotten to be a part of so many wonderful things over the years.” When she isn’t bundling bouquets, Siliato spends much of her time at her horse farm in Palm City. “I was born and raised in Martin County,” she says. “It’s where my husband and I grew up and where we are now raising our [11-year-old] daughter.” agoodeflorist.net ❖
QUICK QS WITH KELLY FAVORITE ARRANGEMENT ADDITION
I’m in love with fresh foliage—assorted fresh greenery is a must in my shop! There are so many beautiful varieties that can take the flowers from tropical to rustic, contemporary to traditional. [Foliage can] even stand on its own as an arrangement or a bridal bouquet. BEST PART ABOUT WORKING WITH WEDDINGS
When it comes to creating the perfect flowers to celebrate such a monumental moment in someone’s life, there’s nothing more stressful yet also rewarding! It’s always the best feeling when I show clients their flowers and there are happy tears. ADVICE FOR BRIDES
Whether you’re looking for flowers, a DJ, or an event planner, find people you trust and then let them do their thing. If you feel you have to micro-manage your hired vendors, you haven’t chosen the right ones.

hink all-inclusive resort, and Mexico or the Dominican Republic typically come to mind. But a new offering in Florida’s Upper Keys is bringing Key Largo into the all-inclusive fold—in the best way possible. Say hello to Bungalows Key Largo, an adults-only (21-plus) property that pairs the amenities of an exclusive island retreat with the laid-back lifestyle of the Florida Keys. Bungalows is a far cry from the low-brow, all-inclusive properties that have become synonymous with budget Caribbean travel. Rather, it’s a detail-oriented escape with high-end

amenities, top-shelf liquor, and personality-driven restaurants. Located on the Keys’ bayside just beyond Mile Marker 99, Bungalows is accessed from a small turn-off that weaves through dense-yet-manicured foliage. After valeting your own wheels, you’ll be escorted on a pastel blue golf cart through the resort’s matching blue wooden gates. Zigzagging along palm tree–laced trails, you’ll cross paths with the Beach House, home to an array of restaurants, and a massive reclining Buddha that underscores Bungalows’ tranquility mantra.
More vacation bliss awaits across a collection of 135 white-washed bungalows, each boasting modern furnishings and a private garden with an alfresco soaking tub and rain shower. After settling into your romantic bungalow, it’s time to explore an intoxicating world of fun in the sun, designed to make you never ever want to leave. Choose

between two pool and Jacuzzi areas or a beachfront lounger to destress and work on your tan. The all-inclusive policy means there’s no reason to decline another glass of Sauvignon blanc or a watermelon margarita while soaking, sunbathing, or enjoying live music sessions. Thematic eateries like toes-in-the-sand Mexican restaurant Sea Señor and Fish Tales—the design of which recalls Il Riccio on Capri—are idyllic for long, memorable meals and languid, cocktail-heavy days. Floating tiki boats head out twice daily for tours along the bay; you can also choose your own bayside adventure via paddleboard, water trike, or kayak, admiring the setting while keeping an eye out for resident dolphins and manatees. To counter the eating and drinking excess, consider a scenic ride on a beach cruiser (every bungalow comes with two) or get fit in the palapa-topped outdoor gym. Early risers can look forward to morning group yoga and fitness classes, which range from hatha and vinyasa to an instructor-led sunrise stretch. Alternatively, treat yourself to a few hours—or more—in the Asian-themed spa. Relax to the sounds of the wind passing through the bamboo gardens, unwind with a eucalyptus steam, or detox in the Himalayan salt room before expert therapists put your body at ease.
Finally, should curiosity or the odd case of cabin fever push you beyond Bungalows’ boundaries, the property provides complimentary transportation within a 5-mile radius. We wouldn’t blame you for wanting to check out the superb snorkeling at nearby John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park or chartering a fishing boat to learn why this region lays claims to America’s best sportfishing. But no matter how you choose to spend your days and nights at Bungalows Key Largo, you’ll quickly fall for this harbinger of American all-inclusive chic and its unique marriage of unapologetic indulgence and Florida Keys–style relaxation. bungalowskeylargo.com ❖

hen Jacquelyn Armour, principal of JMA Interior Design, was contacted by the owners about their plantation-style home on the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter, she was delighted at the rare opportunity to shape its interiors before the residence was fully designed and constructed. The couple, empty nesters who had long lived in the area, wanted Armour to work hand-in-hand with the architect and builder from the ground up—not only selecting the materials, fixtures, finishes, and furniture for the interior spaces, but also influencing the spatial configuration of the rooms and how they would flow from one to the other “It’s great to be able to work with the architect and builder on a home from the very beginning,” Armour says. “It allows you to more fully address both the functional and aesthetic needs of the client.”

From top: “The fernlike fabric on the armchairs served as a jumping-off point for the palette of other elements in the living room,” Armour says; a decorative pineapple finial adorns the base of the grand staircase.
The clients, who already owned an oceanfront condo nearby, decided they wanted a larger, single-family home to more fully accommodate their lifestyle, which often includes entertaining friends and hosting family. They worked with Tequestabased Mitch Miller of Village Architects, along with Armour, on the design and interior elevations before Jupiter-based Dan Reedy of Onshore Construction went to work building the 20,000-square-foot home of their dreams. From a functional perspective, the space had to work for the couple’s adult children and young grandchildren who frequently stay with the owners. “The bedrooms and guest areas had to be well thought through, so people of different generations
would be comfortable under one roof,” Armour says. “They wanted a variety of spaces— both formal and casual—for different types of entertaining, and they asked that as many rooms as possible be oriented toward the spectacular river views, with plenty of options for outdoor entertaining as well.” Aesthetically, the clients had very clear ideas about the ambience they were hoping to establish. “The wife desired a British

colonial–style atmosphere with lots of custom woodwork,” says the designer. The couple, who Armour says favors traditional and antique furniture, also hoped to integrate several pieces from their existing collection into the new home. “But they also hoped to introduce a more contemporary feel and bring the outside in,” she adds. Lastly, they wanted to avoid replicating the look of their condo, which Armour says has “a darker color palette.” At the new home, Armour opted for a lighter palette, “painting much of the millwork white and drawing from the soft blues and greens outdoors.” The result is a sense of relaxed formality that begins in the living room. Framed by a pair of classic Doric columns and crowned with a coffered ceiling, the space is fitted with a mix of antique furnishings—including a reupholstered Bergère chair and a Swedish-style bench—along with new pieces atop a walnut wood floor. The soft hues of the fabrics “pull colors from outdoors into the house in a subtle way,” says Armour.

A Persian rug adds to the elegance of the space and ties the room together. In contrast to the more formal sophistication of the living room, the large family room facing the pool brims with a casual, beachy feeling that not only makes it an inviting family-friendly gathering space but also eases the transition between indoors and out. Beneath a vaulted ceiling supported by cypress trusses, a pair of white contemporary sofas covered with durable Crypton fabric are coupled with updated pale blue reclining wing chairs from Baker, which comfortably accommodate grandkids and dogs. Fringed throw pillows contribute to the classic blue and white waterside color scheme. Armour also collaborated with the architect and builder to surround the room with doors that pocket into the walls, enabling a clear view of the pool and supporting an indoor-outdoor lifestyle as well as a sense of connection to the summer kitchen and covered outdoor dining area nearby. Armour carried the beach vibe into the kitchen, where she deployed a variation on the water-inspired palette: barstools covered is a soft blue fabric from Kravet; a creamy marble-like quartzite for the countertops. The second story of the home, accessed by a grand winding staircase, houses three guest bedrooms, five baths (three others are on the first floor), and the master suite. Drenched in a soothing variation of the color scheme and anchored with an antique four-poster bed, the master is an oasis of calm. The room’s comfortable seating area overlooks the massive river beyond the French doors leading to a terrace. In the baths, the owners

Working together with the architect, Armour was able to achieve a cohesiveness among the various spaces that makes the home a truly inviting family compound. “It’s an updated, open approach to a traditional British colonial– style home,” she says. “And by being involved early on in the process, we were able to help really shape the interiors, which has a big impact on the overall finished product.” ❖

fter spending two years abroad in Australia and New Zealand, Kayla Fitzgerald returned home to Stuart to begin a new chapter of her life. Little did she know that chapter would lead her to Sam Jacob. The two met in 2016 at Old Florida Bar & Grill in Jupiter and immediately bonded over their effortless, playful banter. “He’s just a very outgoing, fun guy, so our personalities clicked right away,” says Kayla. The friendship quickly developed into a romantic relationship, and two years later, they found themselves vacationing in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. As fireworks illuminated the coastline, Sam seized the opportunity for a picturesque proposal. “We were walking down the beach, and he was telling me how much he loved me and cared for me,” recalls Kayla. “He was speaking really, really fast—and then, all of a sudden, he was down on one knee.” Like many brides, Kayla’s wedding planning began with

Pinterest. She fell in love with a photo of oystershell garlands, deciding right then on a romantic coastal wedding theme. The bride-to-be set out to DIY her own garlands to use as centerpieces, enlisting the help of South Fork Kitchen, who generously allowed her to pick up buckets of oystershells from the restaurant over the course of a year. Kayla would take them home and begin sorting, cleaning, and bleaching the shells, and Sam would drill holes so they could be strung together. Kayla estimates they went through about 2,000 oystershells to perfect eight garlands. “Toward the end, it was like, we never want to see another oyster for as long as we live!” jokes Kayla. To complete the centerpieces, Kayla and her mother, Valerie—who is a wedding/special events planner and owner of Blue Bridals—sourced other local materials. They found blue coral at Nautical and Nice and authentic fishing net at Crow’s

Nest, and they collected driftwood from the beach. To highlight the oceanic centerpieces, Kayla hand-dyed cheesecloth and used it for table runners. She also collected Champagne glasses throughout the year from Goodwill and garage sales so each table setting had a unique vintage glass. The rest of the decor mimicked hues of the oystershells and coast—dusty blues and soft grays. A watercolor seating display mirrored the couple’s invitation suite. Nautical seafoam lanterns framed the ceremony area, and mercury glass candleholders marked the sweetheart table. Kayla’s bridesmaids wore varying shades of blue, and her tropical bridal bouquet was crowned with beautiful white king proteas. On October 26, 2019, the couple arrived at The Lake House in Fort Pierce. Kayla says the decision to wed at the venue was a simple one, owing to its lush greenery and waterfront views. “I think I knew it was going to be the venue before I actually saw it in person,” she says. “I love every aspect of it.” But the weather wasn’t cooperating that day, and they were forced to make a rain call: They could marry in the rain under The Lake House’s heritage oak tree, which Kayla had always envisioned, or move
50
the entire ceremony under the venue’s veranda. They were set to endure a little rain so Kayla could fulfill her dream— then, moments before she was to walk down the aisle, miraculously, the rain subsided. The outdoor ceremony space was decorated with glass fishing floats, and the couple met at the altar, which was highlighted by a driftwood arch. A close friend performed a touching and personalized ceremony, at the end of which guests raised a glass to the newlyweds. “It was really special,” says Kayla. After the ceremony, guests moved
to the lakeside veranda, where long farm tables were set up under warm, twinkling lights. They dined on light tropical fare from S&L Events, which included pulled pork with mango chutney, chicken teriyaki, and grilled shrimp with fruit salsa (all taste-tested and approved by Sam beforehand). After dinner and speeches, the couple’s wedding timeline kind of went out the window. Everyone was having so much fun on the dance floor, they decided to skip the planned parent dances and bouquet toss to keep the party going. “That was my favorite part in general, the dancing,” recalls Kayla. “It was just so nice to see all these people you haven’t seen in a while having the time of our lives together.” v

ar more than a celebratory dessert, today’s wedding cakes encapsulate the day’s vibe and oftentimes, the bride and groom’s love story. These pieces of edible art take on many forms—glamorous, rustic, Bohemian, tropical—but it’s not just what guests see on the outside that counts. Modern confectioners unleash their creativity to whip up flavor combinations worthy of seconds—and maybe thirds. Turn the page to discover top wedding cake trends from some of the area’s best bakers. — Liz Petoniak A P R I L 2 0 2 0 | STUART

MAGNOLIA CAKES & CONFECTIONS
Charlotte Glover opened her commercial space in Stuart in January 2013 after finally discovering the ideal way to combine her two passions: baking and art. She lays claim to her profession as a sugar artist and only hires employees with an art and design background. “Given enough lead time, we can translate any idea or image into a cake,” she says. Her mission statement: “I want to bake a cake so pretty that no one wants to cut into it, and so tasty that there’s nothing left to eat.” magnoliacakes.com Flavor Faves: Citrus and coconut; almond and sour cream Trend Alert: More buttercream and less fondant; textured finishes, often with colors; casual looks, such as woodland or Bohemian; cakes with geometric decorations that resemble modern art
SWEET TIERS
Elena Vara is the dean of local wedding bakers, having started in 1984 in Miami. After moving north, she bought the existing successful Sweet Tiers business in Hobe Sound in January 2018, where she specializes in high-end cakes with elegance and style. “Our cakes are light, moist, and delicious,” Vara says. facebook.com/sweettierscakes.2018 Flavor Fave: “My best seller is my award-winning marble cake with Godiva white chocolate liqueur and a fudge filling.” Trend Alert: Double-barrel cakes, where each tier is 6 to 8 inches tall to give the confection a grand appearance
SANDRA’S CAKES
NASSEMBENI PHOTO
Sandra Durbin became an “accidental” baker one day when her cousin asked her to help decorate a cake. Her hobby turned into a business in 2008 when she decided to stay home with her children. Now she turns out a limited number of one-of-a-kind “edible works of art” in Port St. Lucie. She prepares everything from scratch with no additives and always strives to combine beauty and taste. sandrascakes. blogspot.com Flavor Fave: Almond brandy Trend Alert: “For 2020, grand cakes with intricate details and splashes of bright colors are really popular, but what I personally see most are the more simplistic ones with fresh florals and touches of gold.”

CAKES BY MICHELLE
Michelle Leckenbusch describes her business as a “hobby gone wild.” She offers more than a dozen cake and filling flavors and encourages customers to suggest anything they want. Based in Port St. Lucie, she has traveled as far south as Boca Raton and as far north as Mt. Dora to deliver her creations. cakesbymichelle.net Flavor Fave: Almond sour cream with raspberry Trend Alert: Semi-naked cakes with fresh flowers; rustic buttercream cakes—less frosting, but textured

or some couples, what their guests drink during the wedding toast is almost as important as the toast itself. Since opening in late 2017, Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa has become a local destination for weddings, and Event Manager Tom Deahn focuses on helping couples select the appropriate tipple for their big day. “Most brides want something pleasant and simple to the taste, with a color that matches their theme,” he says. “Since we’re an ocean property, we use spirits to create seaside colors in cocktails. Whether the wedding is inside or on the beach, having a tropical feeling is important.” The top choices, says Deahn, are the Hutchinson Blue Champagne and Cuban Punch, as well as the Ocean Breeze and Wedding Tango cocktails. The Champagne, tinted with blue curaçao and garnished with fresh blueberries, is butler-passed during the cocktail hour and the toast. Cuban Punch, The Wedding Tango: tangerine rum, mango purée, and sour a soft and sweet libation served daily in the resort’s restaurants and lounges, mixes raspberry and mango rum, amaretto, and orange and pineapple juices. Created for the grand opening, the vodkabased Ocean Breeze bears a taste resemblance to lemonade. The Wedding Tango—created to reflect the venue’s location in citrus country—combines tangerine rum, mango purée, and sour mix. In addition, Deahn and his team are always ready to create a drink and tailor it to the occasion. “Our main philosophy is to be flexible,” he says. “It’s the bride’s day, and we help [our clients] realize their dream.” hutchinsonshores.com

HOT SPOTS TO ENJOY A DELICIOUS EASTER BRUNCH Easter conjures up thoughts of colorful, painted eggs and chocolate bunnies—but it’s also a holiday that comes with phenomenal brunch options at local restaurants. Few things compare to being able to spend quality time with your loved ones over a delicious meal on a special day. The best part? Not a pan is touched, no plates are used, and if someone doesn’t like the food, you know you’re excluded from that narrative. Head out with your friends or family on April 12 and take advantage of the special brunch packages around town and beyond. For a list of spots offering yummy Easter brunch, visit stuartmagazine.com/easterbrunches2020.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY IN MARTIN AND ST. LUCIE COUNTIES Earth Day celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year on April 22. There are so many ways you can honor the holiday, even just by taking small steps to a more sustainable lifestyle. Simple swaps like replacing plastic containers with glass are an easy way to take care of the place we call home. You might also get outside and appreciate our planet by
“World’s greatest duo” New Horizons Service Dogs (@give_drop_leaveit)
immersing yourself in the beauty of local parks, beaches, and preservations. For more ideas on celebrating Earth Day, and a list of fun events in the area, visit stuartmagazine.com/earthday2020.
LOW-CAL, FRUITY COCKTAILS FOR SPRING Cocktails are a delicious staple to brunch spots and happy hours everywhere—but the calories can add up. The trick is to follow a few tips so you consume less sugar and calories without compromising on flavor. Next time you order your favorite adult beverage, avoid sour mixes, simple syrups, processed sugars, and artificial additives (ask your bartender what’s in the drink if you don’t know). In the mood for a mojito? Ask if they have fresh berries and request to swap the sugar for muddled fruit. For those margarita cravings, ask if you can replace sour mix with muddled lemon and lime wedges—or even orange slices—and ditch the sugar and salt rim. Discover more tips plus easy-to-make, fruit-filled cocktail recipes at stuartmagazine.com/lowcalcocktails.
