On the right path

Wellness is such a fluid term that can mean different things to different people, and that meaning can also change for individuals over time. Everything is relative, after all, so what’s important is that we feel we are wholly living the best lives we can, whatever that means to us personally.

When it comes to kids, though, it’s kind of our responsibility to make sure they are living well, because they may not fully understand exactly how to live their best lives just yet. Point them in the right direction, and provide a clear path for them to head in that direction. That’s what Palm City resident Noel DelValle has done for the youth of Martin County.

Back in 2017, DelValle founded the Martin County Police Athletic League, an organization that focuses on building kids’ self-worth and teaching them the importance of things like teamwork, forgiveness, and making better choices. Through sports like boxing and golf, peer-to-peer programs surrounding leadership, and more, DelValle and the folks at PAL are helping school-aged kids in the county—including many who have gotten into some sort of trouble, whether it be at school or elsewhere— change course and find a new, more positive path forward. When I stopped by a PAL boxing class one Monday evening in March, it was truly impressive watching these kids so focused and engaged. Read all about it in “A League of Their Own,” beginning on page 58.

On our cover this month is former Bachelorette star Tyler Cameron, one of Martin County’s newest residents. Tyler grew up in Jupiter, and last summer he bought a new home in Hobe Sound that he’s been renovating ever since. I recently chatted with Tyler about life, fame, family, philanthropy—and his brand new TV show, Going Home with Tyler Cameron. The show was filmed locally and follows Tyler and his team at Image One construction as they renovate homes in the area. It’s available on Amazon Prime Video now, so be sure to check it out! Feel-good summer!

It’s easy to live a healthy and active lifestyle in our area, with so many beautiful biking trails, parks, paddleboarding options, golf, and tennis— not to mention all the pickleball matches that everyone seems to be playing these days! Classes in everything from yoga to tai chi to meditation are also offered all over town. This summer, I’m personally hoping to get back into yoga and do more trail exploring.

Recently, I found this great website, traillink.com, which helps you locate hiking, biking, walking, and running trails to explore across the United States. My husband and I enjoy biking and being out in nature as much as we can, and I’ve put together a list of new-to-me local trails for us to explore this summer. When we are in the mood to drive west, one of our favorite biking trails is the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, where you can bike, fish, ride horses, or walk leisurely along the lake.

Of course, Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound is always a great standby for locals. Did you know the park offers 11 rental cabins near the Loxahatchee River and more than 8 miles of multiuse trails for horseback riding, off-road biking, and hiking? Martial Arts, 3 WAYS

Age-old practices steeped in the traditions of self-defense offer myriad health benefits. Here’s a look at three disciplines and how they can help you achieve your wellness goals.

More than 200 styles of martial arts—ranging from slow and graceful tai chi to high-intensity kung fu—are practiced by those looking to challenge their mind, body, and soul. Finding their origins mostly in ancient East Asian codes of combat and competition, martial arts have

evolved over time to reflect the culture of regions across the globe. In our area, there are many local outlets offering practices that can help you achieve your wellness goals, both physical and mental. Learn a bit about three such disciplines taught locally by experienced instructors.

BRAZILIAN JUJITSU

Originally from Japan and refined in Brazil, jujitsu (also referred to as jiu-jitsu) teaches self-defense techniques such as escaping a headlock, choke hold, or arm bar; avoiding getting hit or knocked out if someone throws a punch; and how to restrain an attacker. “It’s a full-body workout,” says Joe Scarola, owner of Gracie Barra in Jupiter. “It’s good for cardio and muscular endurance.” Brazilian jujitsu also provides stress relief and requires you to live in the moment and rely on muscle memory. Scarola—known as “Professor” to his students—incorporates life lessons into his curriculum, such as anti-bullying, problem solving, and remaining calm under pressure. TAE KWON DO

Tae kwon do is broken down into three Korean words—tae (foot), kwon (hand), and do (art). Originating in Korea more than 2,000 years ago, the martial art has evolved in modern times into different styles of sparring, sequences of moves, and philosophies. Going beyond self-defense, the Oh Ryung Hon style of tae kwon do was created in 2004 by Grandmaster Amy Reed, founder of Maslak’s Black Belt Academy in Stuart, and accredited by the United States Martial Artist Association in 2006. “Training can improve mental and physical fitness, weight loss, muscle strength,

flexibility, and cardiovascular health,” says Reed’s daughter, Master Nicole Maslak, who owns the Stuart facility. “Our forms (sequences of blocks, kicks, and strikes) help with memory retention, spatial awareness, balance, hand-eye coordination, flexibility, focus, control, breathing, and the ability to form different combinations of movements that can be used in defensive sparring.” The Black Belt Academy is continuing its family legacy of fierce females with a third generation on deck—Maslak’s daughter, Sensei Julia Maslak, is also an instructor and is on their demo team. kickwithme.com

KRAV MAGA

Krav maga was developed in the 1930s as a hand-to-hand combat system for the Israeli Defense Force. The high-intensity cardio workout teaches techniques adapted from various forms of martial arts including punching, kicking, striking, grappling, and knife and gun defense. Instructor Lauren Rios of Harmony Martial Arts Center in Jupiter says her krav maga students learn to “fight for their lives against a larger, heavier, and stronger opponent who abides by no rules.” As a petite woman, Rios used to feel like an easy target for potential attackers before she discovered krav maga. “Training in martial arts has changed my perspective on the reality of violence,” she says. “Size and strength matter, but so does an individual’s level of training.” Krav maga training offers physical health benefits such as metabolic conditioning and calorie burning, as well as psychological aspects like self-discipline, situational awareness, stress relief, and mindfulness.“When I’m training, it’s hard to focus on anything other than the present moment,” says Rios. harmonymartialarts.com ❖

A HEART FOR HEALING

At 18, Port St. Lucie resident Yanela Vickers was pregnant with a baby girl when she started suffering from fatigue, swelling in her legs, high blood pressure, and shortness of breath. Doctors dismissed her symptoms as normal, but she knew something was wrong (and she was right). A trip to the ER in her third trimester revealed she was in heart failure. Tragically, her daughter, Alena, died shortly after birth.

Now 35, Vickers has learned to live with cardiomyopathy, a chronic heart condition she discovered she had been living with unknowingly. “I found out later that my mom’s sister went through the exact same diagnosis,” she recalls. Had she known more about her family medical history, she may have been able to do something sooner.

She took charge of her health, making significant changes to her diet and lifestyle. Today, she is the mother of two healthy children, an EMT, and an advocate for other women. In February, Vickers was selected to be one of 12 ambassadors of the American Heart Association’s 2024 Go Red for Women Class of Survivors. The group of women share their powerful stories of survival to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke in women and inspire others to take charge of their well-being. (Of note: out of only 12 women selected nationwide, two are from our area—Vickers and 32-year-old Marissa Fattore of Vero Beach.)

A New Nightcap?

Traditionally, only time and hydration can counter the effects of a fun-filled happy hour. Now a Jupiter-based company hopes to change that with Safety Shot, a beverage that claims to reduce blood alcohol content and ward off a hangover. FISH TALES

Hobe Sound resident Michael J. Tougias met Adam Gamble on a fishing boat in 1999, and the two men became fast friends. Both published writers— Tougias is the author of The Finest Hours, which was made into a Disney movie starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck in 2016, and Gamble wrote many of the Good Night children’s books— the best buds decided to pen a new book together about their friendship journey that developed through a shared love of fishing. “It’s a story of overcoming obstacles told via the setting of our fishing trips at sea,” Tougias says of the book, The Power of Positive Fishing: A Story of Friendship and the Quest for Happiness,” which was published by Lyons Press last fall. The authors alternate chapters—Gamble focusing on nature, and Tougias spinning humorous tales about their “boneheaded misadventures.” The book takes a deep look at male friendship, demonstrating how a shared hobby bonded two men who found support in each other through the ups and downs of life. Women lead the charge rehabilitating sea turtles at Loggerhead Marinelife Center

When an injured sea turtle is lucky enough to find its way to Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, the medical team stands ready to bring it back to good health. These creatures are fortunate to be in the caring hands of a skilled, all-female veterinary team led by chief science officer and veterinarian Dr. Heather Barron.

Barron arrived at Loggerhead in 2022 and set about recruiting her team, hand-selecting the four talented women who, along with herself, make up the rehab staff. Each team member—Marika Weber, Amy Kowalski, Jamie Pescatore, and Tori Hample—brings a wealth of experience in sea turtle biology, research, and medical care. “We have been very lucky to get some of the best people in our field,” Barron says of her colleagues.

A typical day begins with patient rounds, walking by each tank and discussing each patient’s progress and

needs. Any necessary surgeries and other treatments are done early in the day, while afternoons are devoted to rechecks and admitting new patients. The team is responsible for not just sea turtles but all of the wild animals that come into the hospital— including other species of turtles as well as sea birds, which are “quickly shifted to Busch Wildlife when they are stable enough to travel,” says Barron. Aside from rehabbing the injured animals, adds Barron, her team’s mission is to “look at the conservation of our oceans through the lens of sea turtle health.”

Dr. Barron, who graduated from the University of Georgia in 1995, says the veterinary space has changed a lot over the years, with many more women entering the field than in her days as a student. “When I was

in school, it was predominantly male students, but that’s not the case any longer—now it is probably 86 percent female,” she estimates.

She continues: “I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and I’m just as excited to go to work now as I was my first year out of school. It is a very rewarding career.” marinelife.org ❖

What begins as a hobby often becomes a lifestyle, which is the case with Jennifer Johnson. The Stuart resident developed an interest in fishing and boating at an early age, fun-fishing alongside her brother as a kid.

Her interests eventually led to aspirations of someday running her own vessel abroad to cruise, fish, and dive in the Bahamas. Ultimately, this would become a family affair. Now a mom of two sons, Reggie and Zachary, Johnson encouraged her boys to share her love of fishing, and, after owning several other boats, she pulled the trigger

The past few years have had their highs and lows, as he experienced both a sudden rise to fame and a tragic loss. Now Tyler Cameron is back home for good, growing a local business, renovating a new home in Hobe Sound, and starring in his own TV show filmed right here in his hometown of Jupiter.

Tyler Cameron is carefully navigating his way around paint cans, power tools, boxes, and myriad other construction hazards, leading his visitors (us) on a tour of his new home. It’s March, and 31-year-old Cameron is in the midst of a total renovation of the Hobe Sound property he purchased last May. He greets us looking like an average dude—lived-in jeans, a tee, a happy dog (Harley) bounding out the front door—“average,” of course, except for his way-above-average good looks. On this particular day, his guys have just installed the new wood flooring upstairs, and Cameron is excited. There are also some folks outside taking measurements for the deck addition, while one of his friends/team members sits at a desk in the cluttered garage working on a laptop. There’s a lot going on.

“Upstairs, that’s where we’re going to have the podcast studio,” he says as we walk through the home. We head out to the sprawling backyard—his home sits on a half-acre lot—and he points out where the outdoor kitchen is going to be, noting that he eventually also plans to install a pool. As the quick tour comes to an end, we head back to the garage to prep for the shoot. He opens a suitcase on the floor that’s filled with fancy duds sent by his New York PR team, and we sift through, pulling the first look. Cameron grabs a pair of navy Brunello Cucinelli trousers and an Etro button-down and goes behind a stack of boxes to change.

before, but he seems to be enjoying it. As the photographer finds his light and starts clicking…that’s when it happens.

Suddenly, Cameron is someone else. He’d been clunking around in work boots and cracking jokes, but now he’s on. He’s a natural in front of the camera, knowing exactly how to angle his face and move his body. The kid from Jupiter who works in construction has transformed into a GQ model in the blink of an eye.

And that’s the thing: Tyler Cameron has been living a sort of dual life ever since he shot to fame in 2019 after melting hearts on The Bachelorette. Once the show aired, he was everywhere. He walked the red carpet at the People’s Choice Awards (a nominee for “Favorite Competition Contestant”) and was seen canoodling with supermodels in the tabloids. In 2021, he wrote a book (You Deserve Better), had a cameo in a Netflix film (Good on Paper), and appeared in an SNL skit with Kim Kardashian. The following year, he launched a podcast (Everybody But Me) and competed on ABC’s The Real Dirty Dancing. All the while, he was also modeling for brands like Calvin Klein, Steve Madden, Uncommon James, and Clarins.

“I think there’s a little bit of nerves sometimes,” he says of walking into the world of celebrity. “I get the feeling like, do I belong? Like, why am I here? It’s almost like these people are gonna realize it’s just me and kick me out of here soon, you know?” But he adapted quickly. “You start to learn that, okay, I’m supposed to be here I guess,” he continues. “And you kind of get more confident within it. I’ve always just wanted to have fun with it, meet new people, and enjoy all the cool new experiences.”

One of his favorite experiences that came in those early days of fame was going to the People’s Choice Awards with his mom, Andrea. “That was a cool deal and something that she was just through the roof about,” he recalls. “She was calling friends to help her go shopping and get bags and this and that, and it was such a big deal for her. Having her there walking the carpet with me, that’s an experience I cherish most. I got to have that moment with her.”

That memory is just one of many he cherishes with his mom, who passed away suddenly in 2020 from a brain aneurysm. It shook Cameron to his core. Andrea, a real estate agent, was a beloved local who spent her life helping others. Cameron recalls a funny story that speaks to her warm heart: “I remember she sold this older lady a home, and I’d be talking to my mom

two months later and she’s bringing this woman to her doctor’s appointment. I’d be like, ‘Mom, part of the job is you sell a house and move on to the next one.’ And she’d say, ‘No, I take care of my people.’ That’s just how she was.”

Growing up, Cameron says his Jupiter home was a welcoming place for all, and his mom would help his football buddies with their academics to make sure they’d get into college. Education was really important to Andrea, and that’s what motivated Cameron and his brothers—Austin, 28, who is in the army, and Ryan, 24, who is currently finishing up firefighting school— to start a foundation in her honor when she was gone.

The Andrea C. Cameron Foundation gives college scholarships to local high school students, and the family hosts a big gala each year to raise money. Since it was founded three years ago, the foundation has grown immensely. “Our first year, we gave out two scholarships, and they weren’t even full-tuition scholarships,” says Cameron. “Our next year, we were able to give out five [full-tuition cost for in-state schools], and this year we’re giving out 15. Our goal is to get to 20 or 25 next year.” Beyond scholarships, the foundation also provides mentorship to help students land internships, get into graduate school, and more.

His dad, Jeff (whom he affectionately calls “Pops”), has the same generous nature, says Cameron. “To this day, if he sees a kid who wants to play football, he goes out and trains them one-on-one,” he says. “My dad’s 66 at this point and doesn’t move too well, but he’s out there still yelling at these kids and coaching ’em up, you know? He just wants to help kids out.”

His dad also coached Cameron hard when he was young, and it paid off. Cameron was a star quarterback at Jupiter Community High School, went on to play for Wake Forest University and then FAU (where he earned his MBA), and was eventually invited to the Baltimore Ravens’ mini-camp. But an old shoulder injury acted up, and he was cut from the pro team. He was devastated. “I felt like a full-blown failure because something I devoted my entire life to didn’t work out,” he recalls. He wasn’t sure what to do next now that his formerly clear path to the NFL was bulldozed. “When you’re an athlete, it’s your whole identity,” he says. “You don’t go and do internships in the summer or anything to gain experience in the work force. So when it was done, I was like, what do I do with my life?”

He decided to get his general contractor’s license and pursue a career in construction like his dad. “I’d always thought the

business was fascinating, so I figured I’d pick up a hammer and hop right in,” he says. Then one day, on a whim, he applied to be on The Bachelorette. “It was a joke with my friends,” he explains. “I had applied for the WWE one night, and then I thought, let’s see what else I can find.”

To his surprise, ABC called—they wanted him on the show. He went with it. “I’m a big believer that life is just a story, and you’ve got to make the coolest story you can,” he says. “So why not try and be a wrestler? Why not go on The Bachelorette? It’s fun taking these gambles and risks and seeing where they take you. The Bachelorette was the first one to hit me back, and we just kind of rolled from there. And I tell you what, if the WWE would’ve hit me, we’d be having a different conversation.”

In early 2020, Cameron was busy being famous in New York City post-show when his mom passed away. He came home to Jupiter for the funeral, and then COVID mania happened and he decided to stay put. During those first couple of years back home, he got involved with 3Natives (eventually opening his own franchise in Delray Beach in August 2023), started buying land and building houses, and before he knew it, he had planted new roots in his hometown. “I realized I’m happier here,” he says. “This just feels like where I need to be.”

It was then that Cameron also started focusing on a passion project he’d been thinking about for a while, something that combines his love for both his hometown and the real estate/construction business. He’d had the idea years prior, but it was derailed for various reasons. But now the timing was right, and last month the result of his hard work finally paid off when his new television show—Going Home with Tyler Cameron—was released on Amazon Prime April 18.

The eight-episode series, which filmed for about six months starting in September 2022, centers on Cameron’s construction company, Image One, and follows him and his crew as they renovate homes in Jupiter. “This is something we thought about years ago, and it took forever to get it going,” says Cameron. “I’ve always thought [Jupiter] is the most incredible place in the world and I’d love to showcase it.” An executive producer on the show, he was involved in all of the production meetings and was able to provide a lot of direction in terms of showcasing what Jupiter is really all about.

For Cameron, this project was a labor of love—and there was a lot of labor. “We did nine houses in seven months,” he says

of the home renovations filmed for the show. “It was insane.” There are a few celeb cameos including former Bachelorette Hannah Brown. But mostly, the show features locals. Cameron and his close-knit crew—Image One partner Robb Ritch, a friend he’s known for years, and designer Jessica Quintero— work on renovations for clients including some of Cameron’s friends and family (like his dad and high school girlfriend). They are helped out by a “village” of contractors, many of whom Cameron is personally connected to—like Coach Chip, his pee wee football coach, who did the drywall in one episode; designer Angela Reynolds, one of his mom’s best friends; pro golfer Justin Thomas; and mural artist Bulk Styles. Says Cameron: “I knew this was going to be a tall task, and I had to call on the people that I know, that I can trust and rely on. What’s so great about our town is, it’s really a little big town. It’s gotten big, but it’s still little to the people who grew up here. We take care of each other and help each other out.”

Fashion Forward: “In middle school, I bet my mom and dad I wouldn’t drink soda for a whole year, and if I did it, they’d give me a thousand dollars. And so I did it, I got my thousand dollars, and I immediately became a shoe collector—I had like 40 pairs of shoes. They all had to match my outfits every day, and I was voted ‘best dressed’ in eighth grade at Jupiter Christian. I still don’t really drink soda.”

Dancing King: “At Wake Forest, I took a bunch of dance classes to get my GPA up. Modern dance, ballet, hip-hop, jazz, African dance… What I realized is, one, I loved it. It was so much fun and great for my flexibility. But two, it was always, like, 20 girls and me. And I love a class like that!”

Life at 40: “I hope I have a bunch of little kids running

show and a reality series that digs a bit into Cameron’s personal life. It has its fair share of humorous moments (Cameron’s a lovable goofball really), but it’s also quite emotional. Throughout the series, while working on other projects, the team is working on one very special renovation: Cameron’s mom’s home. It’s something Andrea had always wanted to do, and just before she passed Cameron was planning on surprising her with a renovation. Completing it was a way to honor her memory and provide a bit of closure to her family and friends. Without giving away too much, the show culminates in the big reveal of the finished home, which, suffice to say, is a tearjerker (in a good way).

Now that season one is out, Cameron is continuing to build his construction business here and stepping back into the spotlight from time to time, as he’s been doing. Last year, he went to New Zealand to tape the Fox TV show Special Forces, and this past February he flew to L.A. to attend the Grammy Awards. The modeling projects will continue, and he will effortlessly morph back and forth from celebrity to Jupiter dude. It’s something that comes easy to him and one of the things he appreciates most about the life he’s carved out for himself.

“I think there’s a more sophisticated side of me that people never really see down here, but I love dressing up and all that stuff,” he says. “But I also love to be able to go play in the dirt, go build whatever we’ve got to build, or rough it on the boat all weekend. I’ve always been able to fit into whatever job I need to fit into, and that’s what I love about what I do. Every day is different. To me, that’s the thrill of it all.”

The Martin County Police Athletic League offers local kids a safe space to grow through multifaceted programs in sports, leadership, and more

Sixteen-year-old Andrew Figueroa stands in the ring, feet spread, boxing gloves raised, and set to spar with former heavyweight champion of the world John Ruiz. Having the chance to learn from one of the world’s best is a rare opportunity, and the Stuart teen appreciates every minute of it. “He is a role model to me,” says Figueroa, who dreams of being a professional boxer one day. “Boxing has taught me discipline, self-control, and about being a leader.”

Figueroa is just one of hundreds of kids who have enrolled in the Martin County Police Athletic League (PAL), where they box, golf, wrestle, and drum their way to a brighter future. Founded in 2017, PAL teaches Martin County’s youth about teamwork, fitness, and leadership

through a series of sports and empowerment programs.

The organization was started by Palm City resident Noel DelValle, who had a vision after discovering the power of positive fitness at his own gym. “There was an empty space on Monterey Road, so I decided to open Twelve Rounds, a boxing and kickboxing gym,” recalls DelValle, 50, who was director of business development for Treasure Coast Irrigation at the time. “[At first], I just figured it would be an extra stream of revenue for me and my family.”

Before long, members were asking if their kids could come to the gym too. Familiar with the national PAL organization, which utilizes athletic programs to help prevent juvenile crime, he figured he would refer the parents to the local chapter—but he discovered there wasn’t one.

That’s when DelValle took a leap of faith and founded Martin County PAL, while still holding down his day job. In 2021, he left his former career to work full-time with PAL. “I realized I wasn’t put on this earth to do landscaping,” says DelValle of his decision to quit after 15 years at the Hobe Sound company.

Today, Martin County PAL operates out of a 3,800-squarefoot facility in Palm City (after outgrowing its original Stuart location in 2020). The organization has expanded to include programs involving boxing, soccer, golf, wrestling, and even a drumline, which are open to all school-aged kids in Martin County.

The heart of the organization lies in two unique programs that have a lifelong impact on kids’ lives. Rebuild and Rise is a 16-week program for middle school–aged first offenders. These youths, who have gotten into some sort of trouble (things like smoking or vaping at school), are referred to PAL by the Department of Juvenile Justice, Martin County Health Services, and the School District of Martin County as a form of intervention so they don’t repeat the behavior and get into trouble again. “The goal is to give them 16 leadership principles to help them make better choices,” says DelValle, who also plans to start an anti-vaping program in conjunction with the school system. Rebuild and Rise involves 16 weeks of group sessions, each week focusing on a different principle. Kids work through exercises in a workbook

and discuss what principles like forgiveness and self-worth mean in their lives. The peerrun program has been incredibly successful, with a zero-percent recidivism rate.

Sandra Graham, 19, is one of those success stories. The Port Salerno teen, who now works full-time at PAL, was mandated to complete a 16-week program after getting into trouble for smoking marijuana at school when she was 14. “It was rough,” recalls Graham, who says she was struggling with self-esteem issues at the time and arguing a lot with her family. “I did not want to be here, but after the second month, I was hooked.”

“Sandra came to PAL as a difficult youth,” says DelValle. “It was amazing to see the transformation in her over the weeks she was sanctioned to be here.” Graham now works with kids at PAL who are struggling just like she was. She says: “I tell them, it doesn’t matter why you are here. This is your fork in the road. Get on board now before you can’t make a comeback.”

For local kids who are not first offenders but just want help in dealing with issues at home, school, or personally, the same 16-week curriculum is offered through PAL’s iLead iChoose Me leadership program.

One of the more popular activities at PAL is the boxing program. Every week, 100-plus kids come to the ring in Palm City to learn the sport from expert instructors—like former world heavyweight champion John Ruiz. The 52-year-old Palm City resident had an impressive career as a professional boxer, holding the WBA heavyweight title twice between 2001 and 2005 and making history as the first Latino boxer to win a world heavyweight title. Ruiz was a member at Twelve Rounds, where he met DelValle, and volunteered to be a coach when DelValle decided to start PAL.

“I made a living out of boxing, but it’s a tough career,” says Ruiz. “We show the kids how to build a team and let them

know it’s not an easy sport. You’re going to be nervous, but you have to have courage.” Ruiz says he sees the effects the program has on the kids every single day. “The change you see in each of them… I can’t put it into words,” he says. “These kids are becoming young men and women.”

The kids may not fully recognize what they are learning at PAL—but they know it’s a place they want to be. “They’re like part of my family,” says 13-year-old Heaven Burns, a Stuart resident who has been going to PAL for three years. Burns says that in addition to boxing and golf, she gets help from PAL staff with her homework.

Stuart resident Marcello Garcia, 14, has only been going to PAL for a few months, but he already loves the experience. “Everybody is friends with each other,” he says. “I’m happy to be in that kind of environment.”

Working with Ruiz has led Garcia to want to pursue amateur boxing. “[Boxing] has taught me to push myself,” he says. “A lot of times, you are tired or lazy, but if you push yourself, right after that you’ll feel so much better and you’ll be happy you did it.”

is looking to expand its programs and space. In 2023, PAL served 550 kids, and DelValle expects 2024 numbers will well exceed that. He says he will soon be launching a capital campaign to raise money to build a new 10,000-square-foot facility on a piece of land the organization owns in the Golden Gate area of Stuart.

Last year, he was able to secure a grant from Impact100 to acquire a FedEx truck, which he converted into a PAL mobile unit. The bright green vehicle is outfitted with punching bags, a miniature basketball court, pull-up bars, ropes, and other gym equipment. A booming sound system and colorful lighting attract kids’ attention when the truck arrives at a location. The mobile unit gives PAL a broader reach, engaging kids who wouldn’t otherwise have access to

the organization. The truck visits parks in Indiantown as well as one school every weekday in lower-income areas of the county. School counselors say they have seen a noted uptick in attendance on days kids know the PAL mobile unit will be on campus.

Both the mobile unit and the potential for a bigger main campus are welcome expansions for an organization that is vital to the county’s youth. “Martin County PAL is one of our primary trusted resources for youths,” says Joanna Greene, human services supervisor for Martin County. “PAL integrates so many different ways of reaching them that they actually enjoy in the process. Over at Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street, Beacon and its rooftop hideout, Topside at the Beacon, have upped their menu game with several vegan dishes including chickpea fries, roasted tomato bisque, smacked avocado stack, veggie stir-fry, and cauliflower steak. “We took the popular dishes and gave them a modern makeover,” says Shane Johnson, executive chef at the Love Street waterfront restaurant hub. “A lot of food made from scratch can be made vegan with just a few minor adjustments or substitutions. For example, we use almond milk for the chickpea fries and tomato bisque, as well as hazelnuts to thicken. The selection of vegan products opens

Park your car (or dock your boat) and come as you are. That’s the vibe at Mangia Clam Bar, a casual, tropical oasis situated along Manatee Pocket.

As its name implies, Mangia Clam Bar focuses on both seafood and Italian cuisine. “Everyone has that mentality that if you’re on the water, you’re supposed to just serve seafood,” says David Tranes, one of the restaurant’s owners. “We have seafood, but we add an Italian twist to it.”

To his point, there are plenty of chicken, veal, and seafood items prepared parmigiana, francese, piccata, or marsala, plus pizzas and a variety of pasta entrées. Mangia also offers lasagna as an occasional special, and they make their own pizza dough in-house.

Tranes’ favorite dish? The mahi-mahi tacos. “It’s a lighter dish, but you’re still getting the protein and it fills you up,” he says, noting that the tacos are stuffed with a house-made cilantro slaw.

Of course, there is seafood on the menu, including shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops, and oysters. For those who want to nosh on bar food while watching the game, there are also many handhelds and shareables like wings, mozzarella sticks, hot pretzels, cheeseburgers, and tasty heroes.

Of note is the three-course prix fixe menu ($22.95), which includes soup or salad; a choice of entrée (including traditional Italian dishes and seafood) served with pasta, broccoli, or potatoes; a cannoli or chocolate cake for dessert; and a nonalcoholic beverage.

Tranes says Mangia’s happy hour—which runs until 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday—has become a popular social event with locals (and dogs are welcome to join on the outdoor patio).
