PBI: You’ve spent a lifetime onstage, having had your first big hit at age 13. How have you not only survived childhood stardom but thrived from it? Rimes: I’m an incredibly resilient human being who has learned to roll with life and adapt. I’ve gotten good at that! I think creativity has saved me. Even in my darkest moments, I’m able to grow and learn and use the complexities and lessons of life for my creative process.

Growing up in the spotlight wasn’t easy for singer-songwriter LeAnn Rimes. She’s long dealt with anxiety, despite her massive talent and success. But her evolution across her decades-long career has provided healing and resolve—along with a new album. PBI recently caught up with Rimes, who will perform at the Kravis Center’s annual gala along with friends David Foster and Katharine McPhee February 16. Tickets are available to purchase via the Kravis’ website. (kravis.org)

It sounds like you’ve come to peace with the anxiety that you’ve candidly described as a driver of your success. I’ve come to understand that it is a part of the intricate design that makes me who I am. Just as a bird with a broken wing learns to fly differently, my anxiety has taught me to navigate life with a unique perspective, allowing it to be a driving force behind my determination and success. Meditation has become a huge part of your life. Is that how you stay centered and maintain your creativity? Yes! I couldn’t sit still [nor did I] want to be alone with

myself. And now I crave that “still” time every day. I am my harshest critic and have to sit with my thoughts, create peace within myself, and give myself the love I always longed for. You’ve been touring your nineteenth studio album, God’s Work. What was the inspiration? God’s Work is the exploration of my personal journey in reclaiming my humanity and spirituality. I like to say [that] this album breaks your heart and heals it, all at the same time. Performing these songs live has been incredibly emotional for me. Put on some headphones, close your eyes, and let this album pour into you like it poured out of me. That would be an incredible gift to me. It’s beautiful to see you on fire with your music, happily married, and in a place of contentment. Thank you! I think what you are witnessing is a woman who is the most authentic she’s ever been, and someone who is truly letting the light into her world. There’s a lot of joy in my life—and also challenges that not everyone sees. I’ve learned to be able to hold both at the same time.
