Planning ahead
Residents of South Florida are always ready for trouble to land at their doorsteps. As this magazine readies for press, there are two tropical systems developing: one in the Gulf and one in the Atlantic. No strangers to power outages, lines at grocery stores, or downed trees, we all do our part to make storm season something we prepare for, not react to.
This year, the Palm Beach Charity Register matches this state of readiness—with regard to natural disasters and beyond. Worthy organizations across Palm Beach County are organized and prepared to take on challenges of all kinds this season. And this year’s Charity Register features more of those organizations and their events than in any year since 2008. The events showcased within are both the lifeblood of the social season across the Palm Beaches and the means by which critical funding is secured for key philanthropic programs.
We are all keenly aware that the explosive growth and development that the Palm Beaches has seen since the pandemic is not applied equally in all areas. Be it housing, health care, or child services, many of our residents rely on organizations such as Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County, Compass LGBTQ+ Community Center, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County to offer support where it is most needed.
Over 32 years, the Palm Beach Charity Register has developed as a resource for organizations and philanthropists to find groups that address all manner of challenges. But it can be an individual’s first introduction to a program or charity where they can help make a difference. The need is great, and we are grateful to our partners and readers for supporting this publication and the wonderful organizations that it profiles.

The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties is one of our longtime partners in this effort. We are so pleased to have them again this season as the presenting sponsor of this thirty-second edition of the Palm Beach Charity Register. We are most grateful for their support and partnership.
All the best,

Terry Duffy tduffy@palmbeachmedia.com

GIVING GROUND
Year-round, local volunteers and philanthropists work to create a social safety net that makes the Palm Beaches a veritable paradise for residents from all walks of life, backgrounds, and incomes. Kristen Lambert is one of those outstanding volunteers. Turn to page 26 to read “Confessions of a Gala Chair” and glean her insider tips on navigating the most important role of the season. And while galas like the ones Lambert chairs are de rigueur on any social calendar, in “Creativity for a Cause” (page 28), we highlight three outside-the-box charitable events where gala gowns need not apply.
So many local organizations are making a difference—from Polo for Life’s support of pediatric cancer patients and their families (page 32), to Friends of Manatee Lagoon’s efforts to protect marine life (page 34), to the critical childcare services provided by Edna W. Runner Tutorial Center (page 36), to Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch’s mission to pair homeless pets with human companions (page 38). When it comes to helping folks in need create confidence from the outside in, Kelley Marcellus’ “Wearing it Well” feature (page 42) profiles three nonprofits that work to connect clients with key pieces of clothing that make a lasting impression.
With the social season upon us, it’s not only time to start filling our calendars with events (page 113), but to plan our perfectly Palm Beach wardrobes. If you’re in the market for a piece of jewelry to put the finishing touch on your gala look, Mary Murray’s “Golden Glow” (page 48) showcases a sparkling selection of beautiful baubles. If you find yourself in need of a hostess gift or two this season, don’t miss “Goods to Gift” (page 24), where we spotlight items that give back to charity with every purchase made.

For the section of the Palm Beach Charity Register that locals use year after year as the definitive guide to the county’s most storied organizations and fundraising festivities, take time to page through our Charity Listings beginning on page 55. It’s more than just a compendium of 156 glamorous events; it’s also an opportunity to find a passion, serve a purpose, and give back with grace.
Palm Beach’s social season offers a unique and time-honored way to break out your finest fashion finds, mingle with like-minded neighbors, and become a true helper in our community. I hope you find an organization (or two) that inspires you to attend an event, make a donation where you can, or donate your time and talents to elevate a local cause that speaks to you.

Confessions of a Gala Chair
Behind every charity soiree is a gala chair who worked tirelessly to make it happen. We see them at the fêtes, all convivial and chic, but it has to make you wonder: what led up to that grand gala moment? Here, chair of the Kravis Center Gala and Palm Beach Day Academy’s Feather Ball, Kristen Lambert, gives us an insider’s take on putting together some of the season’s top philanthropic events.
By Kristen Desmond LeFevre
GALA CHAIR: KRISTEN LAMBERT
Why have you chosen to support the Kravis Center Gala and the Palm Beach Day Academy Feather Ball as chair?
Education and the arts are essential pillars of our society. It is important to work together to champion them.
How many years have you served as chair?
This is the second year I am serving as a chair for the Kravis and the first time for Palm Beach Day Academy.
What key personality traits does a gala chair need to have?
Organization, enthusiasm, flexibility, good listening skills, collaboration, and positivity are key traits for gala chairs.
What’s one “always” or “must” of gala chair protocol?
Gala chairs must serve as strong advocates of the organization and its mission. This often means communicating the importance of the mission effectively and inspiring others to share that passion.
What’s one “never” of gala chair protocol?
Gala chairs should never lose sight of the gala’s purpose. It is paramount for them to be team members and work to create a memorable experience for event attendees while also raising awareness and support.
How do you keep all the event details on track and fabulous?
Being surrounded by kind, conscientious, and smart co-chairs and a dedicated, organized, and experienced team from the organization is the key to keeping event details on track.
What’s a passed canape you can’t pass up during social season?
The Palm Beach Puff is timeless and delicious. I can never pass them up.
Dos for a gala chair outfit:

Be mindful of the organization of honor, consider the venue and overall setting, and go for an outfit that makes you feel like you on a great day.
Don’ts for a gala chair outfit:
Try to avoid very high heels, anything too revealing, and colors or materials that can easily be strained or damaged. (What happens if you endure a spill or snag?)
Tricks for remaining picture perfect from gala start to finish?
Stay hydrated, wear manageable shoes and a drama-free dress, and keep lip gloss in your handbag.
What’s your favorite thing about serving as gala chair?
It is wonderful to work with a dedicated team to make a positive impact and
create lasting memories. Additionally, building new relationships with caring community members is a highlight.
What are you most looking forward to?
During the second half of the event, it is exciting to see hard work come to fruition. Also, connecting with attendees who share a commitment to the organization fills me with gratitude.
Can you describe a memorable moving moment you’ve experienced in this role?
Being in the ballroom with all of the attendees and sharing a sense of care and enthusiasm for the Kravis Center and all that it offers the community is truly energizing. It reminds us all of the important roles the arts play in a community.

SURE, EVERYONE LOVES A GALA COMPLETE WITH DINNER, DANCING, AND AUCTIONS GALORE. BUT THESE THREE POPULAR PHILANTHROPIC EVENTS FEATURE ALTERNATIVES WITH THEIR CREATIVE, OUTSIDE-THE-BOX FUNDRAISING FESTIVITIES.
BY KRISTEN DESMOND LEFEVRE

BOCA HELPING HANDS
What: Monopoly & Casino Night
Where: The Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club, Boca Raton
The Buzz: This event’s unique theme was inspired by Boca Helping Hands’ Board President Gary Peters—himself a two-time National Monopoly Champion. When Peters joined the board, he suggested holding a Monopoly tournament to raise funds for the organization. The event has since grown into the larger affair it is today, while retaining its theme. Originally, attendees participated
on-site in a Monopoly competition; today, they compete in a pre-event and winners are announced on the casino floor.
The Impact: Proceeds from the annual event help assist 35,000 people in the South Florida community through Boca Helping Hands’ various programs, including hunger relief, job training, health care, emergency financial assistance, childcare, and weekend meals for Palm Beach County school children. (bocahelping hands.org)

What: Empty Bowls
Where: The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, Palm Beach; and Trinity Delray Lutheran Church, Delray Beach
The Buzz: This grassroots event is so popular that it takes place twice: once in Palm Beach and once in Delray Beach. Simple meals are served in handcrafted bowls to highlight the event’s theme: “Eat simply so others can simply eat.” More than 22 local restaurants donate meals of soup and bread. In advance of the events,

more than 500 bowls are sculpted and hand-painted by supportive volunteers in partnership with local studios throughout Palm Beach County and donated to the Palm Beach County Food Bank.
The Impact: Last year, the proceeds from Empty Bowls Palm Beach funded 600,000 meals for South Floridans in need and raised an additional $120,000. Last year’s Empty Bowls Delray Beach funded 375,000 meals, with more than $75,000 raised. (pbcfoodbank.org)

3 PALM BEACH COUNTY FOOD BANK HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF PALM BEACH COUNTY

What: Women Build
Where: Palm Beach County
The Buzz: Since 2013, Women Build has offered volunteers a unique way to advocate for affordable housing and commit to fundraising or donating a minimum of $1,250 to support Habitat’s mission. During a half-day shift, women builders come together to build alongside Habitat families. The projects range from new home construction to home repair and beautification efforts, and no construction experience is required.
fundraiser. Every dollar raised supports the construction of safe, decent, and affordable homes for people in need.
The Impact: it’s the organization’s largest annual
The Impact: Women Build is a crucial source of funding for Habitat; in fact, it’s the organization’s largest annual
In 2024, Palm Beach County women builders broke national records and raised more than $500,000 to build homes. But the impact of Women Build extends far beyond brick and mortar. Participants not only learn new construction skills, but they connect with like-minded community members, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. Through their involvement, they gain a deeper understanding of how they can help address the housing affordability crisis impacting many families in our community. (habitatgreaterpbc.org)
Disaster Philanthropy
PROACTIVE FOUNDATIONS ARE HELPING THEIR COMMUNITIES BUILD RESILIENCY TO WITHSTAND INCREASING NATURAL DISASTERS CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE | By Cathy Chestnut
In the wake of natural disasters, community foundations have become first responders—providing emergency relief funding to help residents meet basic needs and working with nonprofits to develop strategies for both short-term and long-term recovery.
For years, the Collier Community Foundation (CCF) and the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin (CFPBM) Counties have activated disaster relief funds for hurricanes and economic disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds can be
quickly seeded by immediate, one-time donations from community foundation trustees, new and established donors, or businesses. Donors with established donor-advised funds can expedite donations during a crisis.
Unrestricted funds are also invaluable. Naples resident G. Jeffrey Provol donated to Collier Comes Together’s Hurricane Ian Relief Fund in 2022—his only financial transaction with the CCF— and later decided to leave CCF an unrestricted estate gift of approximately $17 million. The foundation received the gift
after he died in September 2023. “This is how you build your communities—you ensure the community you care about is taken care of in the future,” says Eileen Connolly-Keesler, president and CEO of CCF.
So-called “billion-dollar weather disasters” doubled between 2010 and 2020, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In response, both CCF and CFPBM are taking a longer view—and a proactive role—in making communities more resilient against droughts, wildfires, and storms, which are predicted to intensify in frequency and strength due to climate change.
CCF has granted millions to elevate homes in low-lying coastal communities, orchestrated the planting of 3,500 native trees, and funded the Naples Botanical Garden’s initiative to propagate salt-tolerant plants to establish beach dune systems that break wave action. In 2023, CFPBM awarded $60,000 to Community Greening, which is focused on increasing South Florida’s tree canopy, and $21,405 to The Nature Conservancy’s microinternship program that engages underserved youth in conservation.
“Disaster recovery and philanthropy are evolving,” says Danita DeHaney, president and CEO of CFPBM. “We will continue to build capacity and systematic resilience to future severe weather and natural disasters. [Our] relationships with the nonprofits we serve—many of which are the boots on the ground during disasters—are critical to ensuring our ability to support the local community in times of need.”
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy recommends that donors “recognize there are places private philanthropy can help that government agencies might not.” It notes that community foundations are often nimbler and more innovative than bureaucracies: “With the increase in extreme weather events, governments cannot fully fund recovery. Therefore, private funders have opportunities to develop innovative solutions to help with recovery efforts and to prevent or mitigate future disasters that the government cannot execute.” «

POLO FOR LIFE HARNESSES THE POWER OF POLO TO HELP FAMILIES FACING CHILDHOOD CANCER
By Valerie Staggs
Watching professional polo player
Brandon Phillips race across the pitch at the National Polo Center in Wellington, it’s hard to believe that this vibrant sportsman was once a sick boy battling a brutal childhood illness. Diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma when he was 14, Phillips, now 40, knows firsthand the challenges families face when a child has cancer. Phillips founded Polo for Life to help families struggling with the financial and psychological toll of a cancer diagnosis. Through the organization’s annual Polo for a Purpose event, Polo for Life has raised close to $4 million to support local families. While the event includes a polo match, the festivities go well beyond polo. Both donors and families attend the annual event, which had a Hawaiian theme in 2024, complete with fi re dancers and volcanoes. “The key is to be different and to make it fun,” says Phillips.

Bruce Steinberg, a childhood cancer survivor, attended a Polo for Life event when he was 12. “I didn’t know what polo was, but I heard there would be horses and I thought that would be fun,” says Steinberg. Now 24, he remembers the impact the event had on him. “When you are in the middle of cancer, it’s hard to look past it. You wake up and you go to the hospital every day. [The event] totally got me out of my world of treatment. I felt supported.” Steinberg completed his first year of medical school in June. “Everything I went through made me who I am today. Polo for Life was part of that.”
POST (Pediatric Oncology Support Team) is one of three local children’s cancer charities that receive funding from Polo for Life. “Polo for Life is a rare organization,” says POST CEO Barbara Abernathy. “They give us the ability to meet people where they are and put the funds where they are actually needed.”
With Polo for Life’s support, POST gives families gas cards, toys, and food; provides support groups; hosts movie nights; and helps pay living expenses. “Parents lay awake at night worrying as much about the financial stress as they do about their child and treatment,” adds Abernathy. “The fact that we are able to tell families, ‘We’ve got this,’ because of Polo for Life is huge.”
Polo for Life launched its first Polo for a Purpose event in New York in September at Meadowbrook Polo Club in Old Westbury. In 2025, Phillips plans to bring Polo for a Purpose to the Roy Rogers Polo Club in Los Angeles.
Now a father himself, Phillips has a broader perspective on the support families need.
“I just don’t know how my parents did it,” he says. “Even today, my mother will break down and cry. I feel both sides of it now. That’s why these programs are for the whole family.” (poloforlife.org) «

FRIENDS OF MANATEE LAGOON IS PASSIONATE ABOUT PROTECTING FLORIDA MANATEES AND THEIR MARINE LIFE HABITATS
By Valerie Staggs
The warm waters next to the Manatee Lagoon in Riviera Beach provide comfort during winter months for the manatees that live along our coastline. Floating beneath the surface alongside this FPL Eco-Discovery Center, these magnificent creatures have no idea how much is being done in the building above them to ensure they remain healthy and happy in their ocean home.
Opened in 2016, Manatee Lagoon is dedicated to educating the public about manatees and inspiring communities to preserve and protect Florida’s environment and wildlife. Visitors delight in the center’s exhibits, many courtesy of a nonprofit organization known as Friends of Manatee Lagoon (FOML).
Founded in 2021, FOML was formed to engage the community in conservation efforts that protect manatees and their fragile habitats. The organization has helped fund exhibits including a seagrass aquarium and seagrass wall. “Seagrass is essential to our ecosystem,” says Anne Messer, executive director of FOML. “It acts as a filter and is the primary food source for manatees and sea turtles.”
A new seagrass nursery is the latest ex-
hibit for which FOML provided funding. The nursery consists of aboveground tanks where small crops of seagrass are harvested from the Lake Worth Lagoon then grown in water piped in from the lagoon. Once mature, the seagrass is transplanted back into the lagoon.

Messer explains that the exhibits are part of FOML’s community-wide seagrass restoration program. “We want to train community groups on how to do seagrass matting in which we adhere seagrass saplings to burlap cloths, which in turn can be planted in the Lake Worth Lagoon.”
A new “Beneath the Sea” exhibit, also funded by FOML, is slated to open this year. By following a mother and calf, the exhibit will provide an immersive experience into a typical day in the life of a manatee.
The work of FOML goes well beyond building exhibits. Through its large volunteer program, FOML attends community events to raise awareness and educate the public on
manatees and the importance of conservation. They also offer the Adopt-A-Manatee program that lets people adopt one of 33 wild manatees that are tracked through a partnership with Save the Manatee Club.
For Manatee Lagoon, the work that FOML does is invaluable. “We are grateful for the generous support from Friends of Manatee Lagoon [which] enables us to enhance our exhibits, creating a more immersive and educational experience for our visitors,” says Zack Greenberg, operations manager for Manatee Lagoon. “FOML’s involvement in organizing and hosting various volunteer activities fosters community engagement, expands our reach, and aids in the preservation and conservation efforts of these magnificent creatures. Together, we are making a positive impact on the future of manatees and their habitat.” (friendsofmanateelagoon.org) «

The BallenIsles Charities Foundation was established in 2011 with the goal of Making a Difference in the local community. This year, $1,348,000 in grants were awarded to 58 nonprofit organizations, totaling $8.3 million since inception.

THE EDNA W. RUNNER TUTORIAL CENTER IN JUPITER’S LIMESTONE CREEK NEIGHBORHOOD GIVES LOCAL CHILDREN A SPACE TO THRIVE
By Jesse Scott
Oh, how the Edna W. Runner Tutorial Center (EWRTC) has grown. “When I was here as a kid, it was just one building filled with a lot of love,” says Travis Conway, the executive director of the West Jupiter organization. “Now, we have multiple classrooms and rooms and are serving more than 125 students. The growth has been incredible to see.”
Conway himself came up through the EWRTC system. He was taken under the wing of organization’s namesake when he was just 8 years old: his mom had a brain aneurysm at church, and he spent the summer at EWRTC’s camp while she recovered.
The center’s roots go back to 1986; since then, it has evolved into a lifeline for many local families, providing after-school, spring break, and summer camp services for elementary and middle school students.
Conway says that 86 percent of the center’s students come from low-income families. The hands-on nature of the center’s programming has been vital to the its success—and the success of its students.
“For me, it wasn’t just learning about Lake

Okeechobee, but going there to experience it,” Conway recalls.“We took charter buses to swamps, museums, and so much more. The exposure was huge and remains a big part of what we do for underserved kids.”
Kristina McCann, the parent of a child who attends EWRTC says, “The center plays a vital role in the community by providing educational support and enrichment programs for underprivileged children. It fosters academic growth, builds confidence, and promotes lifelong learning. Its nurturing environment as well as its dedicated staff members and volunteers ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.”
EWRTC has experienced immense growth within the last 15 years. In 2011, the center expanded to three classrooms and, in 2020, further increased its footprint thanks to a successful capital campaign. The 2020 additions included office space, a new science classroom, a counseling room, and an instruction room. Outdoors, EWRTC added a butterfly garden, a basketball court, and a turf playground.

The community has been vital in supporting the organization, with volunteers stepping up to tutor and mentor local youth. According to Conway, the organization has served more than 3,000 local students since its inception and looks to keep growing. Among its most immediate priorities are finalizing its multipurpose field (which recently broke ground and will be a favorite for soccer-loving students), expanding its kitchen to offer cooking classes to local youth, and boosting its trade programming, which introduces kids to the likes of carpentry, cosmetology, sewing, and more.
“Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our students,” says Conway. “And we’ll keep doing just that, so they can ultimately excel.” (ewrunnerctr.org) «

FURRY FRIENDS SUPPORTS
THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND BY ADDRESSING NEEDS AT BOTH ENDS OF THE LEASH
By Jesse Scott
Fido’s tail should be wagging extra hard when it comes to the work of Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch. Long known as Greater Jupiter and Tequesta’s humane society—and bearing a few different names since its 1981 inception—the no-kill rescue organization specializes in rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing homeless animals, among other services.
According to Chief Lifesaving Officer and CEO Jason Gluck, the organization rescued more than 3,000 animals in 2023 alone—and is on a mission to save more each year. “In the last two years, we’ve been among the fastest growing animal welfare organizations in the country,” Gluck explains. “We’ve tripled our life-saving efforts, added a slate of new programs, and continue to address the root cause of animal homelessness in our region.”

Florida has the fourth highest rate of animal euthanasia in the country and brings in more homeless animals than any other state in the country. To address this challenge, Furry Friends has set up a network of buses and vans to ensure animals are transported humanely and taken care of once they are relocated outside of the Sunshine State.
The organization has a 99.99 percent live release rate, which exceeds no-kill standards. “We are truly dedicated to every animal that comes in,” Gluck says. “We want them to ultimately find a loving and wonderful family.”

Through the years, Furry Friends has garnered an incredible network of volunteers and success stories. Among them is volunteer Maida Remmer, who also adopted her dog from the organization. “Furry Friends has helped tens of thousands more dogs and cats over the last two years under Jason’s leadership,” Remmer says. “I love being a part of this amazing team of staff and volunteers who are working nonstop to save animals and say yes where other organizations say no.”

thanks to Furry Friends. ... What a wonderful organization.”
Michael Dent, the adopter of a threelegged chihuahua named Meghan Barkle adds, “Furry Friends is where I got my baby. We are both leg amputees and she is an inspiration. I’m so blessed to have her in my life
Furry Friends operates a 30-acre ranch in Palm City and a two-story animal shelter and veterinary clinic in Jupiter equipped with play yards, a café, and more. Beyond its existing assets, Gluck hopes to soon expand its transport program and finalize a humane education curriculum for local children. “Dogs, cats, and companion animals are the most important things to me,” he says. “We will continue to grow to be the life-saving center our community needs.” (furryfriendsadoption.org) «

HOW THREE LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS ARE FLIPPING THE SCRIPT ON DRESS CODES AND CHANGING LIVES ONE OUTFIT AT A TIME
BY KELLEY MARCELLUS
Across the Palm Beaches, the philanthropic minded are shoring up their closets for the opening of the social season—making sure they have appropriate attire for the cocktail events, galas, golf tournaments, luncheons, auctions, and more that fill their calendars. For others, however, special occasions like a senior prom, high school graduation, or one’s entry into the workforce can feel like a modern-day Cinderella
scenario: not only do they have nothing to wear, but many lack the resources or support to go to the ball in the first place.
Enter the real-life fairy godmothers and godfathers that come in the form of area nonprofits ready to offer so much more than just outfits, all in the name of giving those in need a leg up in creating memories, opportunities, and the chance to write their own stories.

CHANGING ROOMS
When Jervonte “Tae” Edmonds was getting ready to graduate from Florida Atlantic University in 2016, he was excited to start his career. He grew up in a rural part of Florida near Titusville, and when he landed in Boca Raton, he felt like he was on another planet. His education prepared him for his future, but his wardrobe let him down.
“I interviewed for a job I was really excited about, and the interviewer told me I wasn’t dressed for the part,” he recalls. He looked down at what he was wearing, left the interview, and drove to WalMart to buy his first suit.
Edmonds is now the founder and CEO of Suits for Seniors , an area nonprofi t that provides 25 seniors in every Title 1 high school in Palm Beach County a brand-new suit at no charge. The suits, which are donated by Macy’s, Nordstrom, and local vendors, are suitable for graduations, college or scholarship interviews, award ceremonies, job interviews, and more. And the suits are just the tip of the iceberg.
“During my senior year in college, I said I wanted to help high school seniors come to college prepared,” Edmonds says. In addition to the outfi t, “we teach our kids leadership skills, financial literacy, and how to apply yourself,” he explains.
Community partners teach an eight-week curriculum once a week during students’ lunch breaks or during an hour-long after-school program. The curriculum addresses the steps needed to launch a successful career, how to manage mental health concerns, and how to think like an entrepreneur. Students become eligible for scholarships to help them continue their education—Edmonds says they’ve awarded $150,000 to date—and internship opportunities are available too.
Even more importantly, “between the students in each class and

the people who come in and give them attention, we become a little family,” says Edmonds, who is serving in the Florida Legislature as a representative for District 88. He says education is among his pet projects.

The students enter the Suits for Seniors program by referral from a teacher, guidance counselor, administrator, or past participant. They come in with an average GPA of 2.6 and most have single-parent households. The no-cost program boasts a 100 percent graduation rate among participants, and 85 to 90 percent enroll in college. “Most of our kids graduate from college within four years,” Edmonds says.
Suits for Seniors keeps tabs on its participants for five years, and some come back to be part of a peer-to-peer mentoring program for new students. Edmonds hopes to expand participation to 50 students per school and is working to build an endowment program with the assistance of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, to protect the sustainability of the program.
“That early interview showed me I needed at least to look the part to be successful,” Edmonds says. “That message transformed my life.” (suitsforseniors.org)

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
Nerves are a normal part of any job hunt. For some women, however, challenges go beyond the usual jitters. Dress for Success Palm Beaches is the local arm of a global nonprofi t designed to serve women entering the workforce.
“We are committed to empowering women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help them thrive in work and life,” says Esther Perman, a volunteer member of the organization’s board of directors.
The work, Perman says, starts with the clothing. But that only scratches the surface of what Dress for Success Palm Beaches does for its clientele ,who come to the organization by referral through social service agencies from northern Broward to Martin counties, including Belle Glade, where an office opened three years ago. “It’s unfortunate our name is Dress for Success, because we do so much more,” Perman says. “We provide job readiness for the women who come to us.”

Upon referral, a client is set up with an “interview suiting” appointment that typically lasts about an hour. When she arrives at the Dress for Success boutique, she meets with a personal stylist—typically a volunteer “fashionista who is plugged into fashion and has been in the business world, so they know what’s appropriate,” Perman says.
The volunteers spend time talking with the woman about the types of clothes they feel comfortable in and the requirements of the job they’re applying for (not every job interview requires a suit). Then the shopping begins.
The Dress for Success boutique is filled with clothing options— some new with tags from shops like J. Jill and Arthur & Evelyn, others gently worn. The stylist helps the client select items to try on. By the time the appointment is complete, the woman will walk out with a head-to-toe outfi t that includes shoes, a handbag, and brand-new undergarments and shapers, plus wigs, makeup, and a variety of hygiene products.

“The only thing missing is the cash register,” Perman says. “The goal is to treat the client with respect.”

The women who are assisted by Dress for Success are often unaccustomed to the special attention. Some are applying for their first-ever jobs; others are rebounding from hardships including addiction, incarceration, homelessness, or abusive relationships.
Dress for Success offers resume support services, too, plus a sixweek job readiness program called Road to Success. Perman says that 65 percent of its participants find employment. Once an offer is

in hand—whether that comes two weeks or two years after their initial suiting consultation—the client is invited to return to shop for a 90-minute “employment suiting” and walks away with a full week’s worth of job-appropriate clothing, including scrubs. Last year, Dress for Success assisted 838 women in need.
“Individually, we all have that Cinderella effect when you put something on that you feel good and appropriate in,” Perman says. “It’s an inward knowing that telegraphs to a prospective employer that I look appropriate, and you can count on me.” (dressforsuccesspb.org)

THE MILESTONE

Ask any parent when their child took a first step or said a first word, and you’re likely to experience a rush of recollections and nostalgic emotion. That’s how Laura Wissa talks about Prom Beach, the West Palm Beach–based nonprofi t she founded three years ago to supply evening wear to high school students who might otherwise be shut out from their high school proms.
Wissa has no children of her own but was struck by the disappointment a friend’s daughter experienced when her Class of 2020 prom was cancelled because of COVID-19 shutdowns. “Prom is such an important milestone event for any high school student,” she says.
Calling herself a professional volunteer, Wissa has been heavily involved in the philanthropic world. In fact, she is a past president of the Junior League of the Palm Beaches and spearheaded three prom attire drives for that organization, partnering with two local high schools. In reaction to her friend’s story, she said, “You know what

I’m going to do? A prom dress drive.”
In April 2020, she put out the word, and by August she had 600 gowns in her living room. Her husband came to her and said, “I think this is bigger than you,” Wissa recalls. “In November we had over 1,000 pieces hanging in my living room, and that’s when we started the process of establishing a 501(c)(3).”
Wissa, who serves as Prom Beach’s founder, CEO, and one of four volunteer workers (she launders and repairs donated clothing herself) has a background in accounting. “This evolved organically,” she says. “I don’t come from the fashion industry, but I did have a vision in my head.”
The first Prom Beach shop was in a 900-square-foot space at the Salvation Army on Military Trail in West Palm Beach. It has since relocated to an office park off 45th Street with an expansive storefront, complete with a high-end designer boutique, private changing

rooms, a menswear area, a gown room, and a runway with a fulllength mirror.
In 2023, Prom Beach outfitted 116 teens, including shoes, brandnew undergarments, accessories, and makeup. This year, that number grew to more than 1,200.
Teens come to Prom Beach two ways. The first is by appointment and in the company of a representative from their referring agency. A personal shopper helps them select the clothing that makes them feel their best—and that expresses their individual style. The second is through pop-up shops that travel to the places they receive services— like the more than 20 Boys & Girls Clubs in the area. “That helps take away the worry about getting someone from Pahokee here,” Wissa says. “Distance can be a big barrier.”
“ WE ARE PROVIDING FREE CLOTHES, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT’S BIGGER THAN THAT. IT’S A CONFIDENCE BOOSTER. IT’S ABOUT TAKING AWAY SHAME. IT’S ABOUT INCLUSION … AND NOT BEING INVISIBLE.”
— URA WISSA

When Prom Beach is not providing promwear, it hosts a series of “shop the showroom” events that are open to members of the public looking to purchase secondhand and vintage clothing, as well as by appointment for individuals and groups—with pieces by soughtafter brands topping out at around $300. In addition to formalwear and cocktail attire, Prom Beach is one of the few resale shops that sells bridal gowns. Shopping events, as well as clothing and fi nancial donations and support through organizations like United Way, help fund the effort.
“We are providing free clothes, but at the end of the day, it’s bigger than that,” Wissa says. “It’s a confi dence booster. It’s about taking away shame. It’s about inclusion … and not being invisible.” (prombeach.org) «

On Thanksgiving Day 2019, Carter Viss was snorkeling at the Breaker’s Reef in Palm Beach when, despite using a standard dive flag, he was struck by a 36 foot boat. All of Carter’s limbs were struck by the boat’s propellers and he lost his right arm on impact.
In 2023, The Carter Viss Foundation was created to support victims of boating accidents and to promote safe boating and diving practices.

On February 7, 2025, we will be hosting the Inaugural Carter Viss Foundation Gala at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. This exclusive event will gather up to 200 philanthropists for a night of dinner, drinks, and entertainment by a renowned musician, all in support of our critical initiatives.

Party like cleopatra
By Kristen Desmond LeFevre
Ancient Egypt took over Palm Beach last season at the Four Arts Contemporaries gala. Themed “Cleopatra 1963: A Legendary Night in Luxor,” the event was inspired by the epic 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. More than 500 guests arrived in looks that reimagined the film’s costumes, including Cleopatra look-alikes in slinky gowns and jewel-encrusted

headdresses, and Marc Antony figures in tunics and Roman sandals. The outdoor cocktail hour featured a movie set director shouting “places, everyone!” and instructing dancers to “take it from the top” before transitioning to the next scene. Guests then entered the main tent, where they were transported to the set of Cleopatra’s Palace for dinner. (fourarts.org)
