MAKING MERRY

It’s hard to believe the holidays are almost here once again. While celebrating in cooler climes sounds appealing from time to time, I would not trade the extraordinary festivities our coastal town offers for anything. There are seemingly endless ways to celebrate here—both indoors and outside. And I’m always impressed with the many upscale holiday experiences available to enjoy in our area.

One of these opportunities is Naples Historical Society’s Christmas Gala, held at Historic Palm Cottage. Naples Illustrated is proud to sponsor this annual fundraiser. It’s a top-notch affair in Naples’ oldest home, which is donned in Christmas decor befitting its 1895 construction. Our cover subjects, Richard and Stephanie Prebish, were photographed in this festive setting in late September, and I cannot thank the staff at Naples Historical Society enough for decorating months ahead of the holidays for the photo shoot. Specifically, I am indebted to executive director Nancy Dagher, education director John Telischak, and maintenance and logistics manager Ricardo Teruya, who ensured a beautiful backdrop in which to capture Stephanie and Richard, two long-standing supporters of the society. Catch a glimpse of Christmas at the cottage and read more about the Prebishes in a story by Patricia Janeway, starting on page 104.

In this issue, we spotlight another edifice decorated for the season. Technically, it’s a house but not the typical sort. Starting on page 75, senior editor Gaylene Salomons shares details of the Maston family’s charming treehouse, which is elegantly adorned for the holidays every year. In lieu of traditional colors, expect pastel hues and provincial touches in this tastefully trimmed structure designed for two preteen girls.

And what are the holidays without some sparkle and bling? Naples Illustrated is excited to, once again, share several pieces of jewelry worthy of attention. Whether you’re looking to spoil that special someone or yourself, find some incredible baubles in a feature from executive editor Mary Murray, starting on page 112. For additional jewelry coverage, refer to page 68, where she has curated a selection of fabulous high jewelry you won’t want to miss.

In addition to all this, expect more holiday-themed content, including recipes for a few lively cocktails from libations editor Jules Aron. Turn to page 128 for these creations sure to impress eyes and palates at your next holiday soiree.

Wishing you and yours a very merry season,

Jane E. Enos jenos@naplesillustrated.com

FROM THE PUBLISHER

’TIS THE SEASON

It’s the happiest time of the year. Parties are in full swing, restaurants are busy greeting returning residents, retailers are in gift-selling and gift-wrapping mode, and salons and spas are working hard to make the beautiful people of Naples ready for holiday-related events.

Even with the storms we weathered this year, we celebrate the season in one of the most beautiful places. Wintertime in Naples has a warmth and magic to it. Visiting Venetian Village with all its holiday decorations—and many festive boats passing by—is a magnificent way to enjoy this special time. Waterside Shops is bustling with shoppers and diners, too. And then there’s Fifth Avenue South, which also is pure joy during the Christmas season; the annual parade and tree-lighting ceremony there are musts. Of course, Third Street South brings plenty of holiday cheer, too, with live Christmas music on Thursday and Friday evenings, its annual holiday stroll, and a happy Naples snowfall, enjoyed by children and adults alike!

For this issue of Naples Illustrated, our holiday edition, we were thrilled that Naples Historical Society opened the doors of Historic Palm Cottage to host a photo shoot inspired by holidays in Old Florida. We are thankful for this opportunity, and we appreciate our connections to the society, including serving as the official magazine sponsor to its annual Christmas Gala, a formal, black-tie fundraiser held at the cottage.

The month of December also brings us the five-year anniversary of LiveFest, an event hosted at The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón, which will once again bring premier music talent to Southwest Florida. LiveFest is paired with the Grant Thornton Invitational, which draws well-known LPGA and PGA Tour stars to Naples. Together, these events promise a week of amazing golf, music, food, and fun for the entire family. Naples Illustrated is proud to sponsor these popular events.

I hope you enjoy this stunning issue. A year of wonderful collaborations, charities, and events were celebrated in 2024. We are so fortunate to have loyal readers and wonderful businesses to partner with; I am grateful for all of you.

Happiest of holidays!

PAY PARITY

Considered the most inclusive tournament in professional golf, offering equal prize money and visibility to both male and female players, the Grant Thornton Invitational returns to the Tiburón Golf Club and The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón, December 13-15.

The Grant Thornton Invitational is the only mixed team event on the schedules of the PGA Tour and LPGA. The three-day competition features 32 players competing across three rounds of golf, including 18 holes of scramble, 18 holes of alternateshot play, and 18 holes of modified fourball play. Last year’s winners, Lydia Ko and Jason Day, will defend their title and go up against Nelly Korda and Tony Finau, Lexi Thompson and Rickie Fowler, Tom Kim and Jeeno Thitikul, and 12 other pairs,

contending for a $4 million purse, which will be split by the mixed-team winners.

We had a few questions for Rob Hartman, senior vice president for Golf & Events at sports-talent agency Wasserman, about this unique collaboration that Sports Illustrated declares “... could be the beginning of a new era where the image of PGA Tour and LPGA Tour players walking the same fairways won’t seem so foreign.” Turn the page for more. (grantthorntoninvitational.com) –Gaylene Salomons

The Grant Thornton Invitational will be held December 13-15. Last year’s winners were Lydia Ko and Jason Day (pictured holding trophy).

PAY PARITY

NI: How long have you been tournament director? How long have you worked with Wasserman?

Hartman: I’ve served as tournament director since 2013 and have been involved with the event since 2004. Wasserman acquired the Greg Norman Production Company in 2015 (former operator of the QBE Shootout), and I’ve been a part of Team Wass ever since.

This is the second annual Grant Thornton Invitational. What was it called previously?

Professional golf has been played in Naples since 2001, when Greg Norman moved his PGA Tour event, then the Shark Shootout, to Tiburón Golf Club. In 2023, Wasserman transitioned the PGA Tour’s QBE Shootout to a new co-sanctioned, mixed-teams event known as the Grant Thornton Invitational.

When did the event start including women?

Women participating in the Naples PGA Tour stop dates to 2007, when Annika Sörenstam played alongside Fred Couples. Then in 2017, Lexi Thompson joined the QBE Shootout field and has played ever since. (She announced this will be her final season with the LPGA, concluding in Naples.)

In 2022, a second LPGA player was added, Nelly Korda, and this really set the stage for the transition to a full mixed-team event.

How many people are expected to watch the tournament?

Millions of viewers will enjoy the invitational’s Golf Channel and NBC broadcasts, while more than 15,000 fans will take in the action live from Tiburón Golf Club.

The PGA tournaments are organized as nonprofit organizations. How much has been contributed to charities through this specific event over the years?

More than 15,000

Since 2001, the event has contributed more than $15 million to a variety of charitable causes, including CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, Warrior Homes of Collier, National Kidney Foundation, Florida Gulf Coast University, Golisano Children’s Hospital, I Got This Foundation, Palmetto Ridge High School, and more. What feedback do you hear from the players about the event?

The interest from players to participate has been incredibly strong, and with only 16 invitations on both tours, the committee has difficult decisions to make. —G.S.

HOLISTIC Healing in a Luxe Setting

All Points North (APN), a national health company offering innovative treatments for the mind, body, and soul across a full continuum of care, is now open in Naples. The center offers advanced treatments for substance-use recovery and for a range of mental health conditions through leading modalities and evidence-based care. Treatments offered at the center include group and individual therapy, medical detox, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, trauma-based therapy, medication management, small-group fitness, and more. The outpatient clinic is led by Britten Grayden, a licensed mental

health counselor specializing in trauma therapy and addictive behaviors, who holds the role of clinic manager and primary therapist. At a grand opening for the center held in September, she addressed local dignitaries; health care, social service, legal, and justice-system professionals; behavioral health advocates; and local business leaders. “I am so excited to bring APN’s data-driven, cutting-edge full continuum of treatment services … to Naples and to be the conduit to the local recovery community,” she says.

Since opening a flagship residential treatment center in Edwards, Colorado, APN has expanded to include locations in Boulder and Denver; Dallas, Texas; Malibu, California; and now Florida. An APN connection app delivers telehealth support and medication management. APN’s services are a good fit for Collier County, an area experiencing a shortage of behavioral health services, according to Collier County Medical Society Executive Director April Donahue. PICTURING THE FUTURE

It’s never too early to start dreaming about the career path you might follow. A select group of prekindergarten students and five kindergarten graduates of Pathways Early Education Center of Immokalee had the chance to envision the future by dressing in the uniform of a future job. Local photographer Brian Tietz donated his time—two full days, in fact—to photograph each of the students in the environment where they might one day work.

The center, founded in 1964, provides early learning and care to ensure children between the ages of four weeks and five years are equipped with opportunities to thrive and enter kindergarten ready to learn. The school has an extensive wait-list numbering in the hundreds. In October, the nonprofit organization launched the Brighter Future campaign to raise $2.5 million to help provide care for even more students.

The effort is strengthened by a $750,000 matching lead gift from the George and Cindy Rusu Family Foundation.

LIFE LESSONS for Girls

The Boys & Girls Club of Collier County received a $7,500 grant from the Women’s Foundation of Collier County, allowing it to

continue a program to mentor young women. The Junior Women of Initiative (JWOI) program will once again give 15 to 20 middle school girls the opportunity to work alongside adult female mentors in building their self-esteem, confidence, and personal awareness while fostering vital life skills necessary for future success.

To be eligible for the program, which consists of 15 workshops over seven months, candidates undergo an interview process. Selected girls and their parents sign a written commitment to attend all meetings and participate in all activities.

child and the importance of investing in kids early, Ashlea Hanson, marketing and communications director for the center, spearheaded the unique visual community collaboration. Participating organizations and businesses included Arthrex, North Collier Fire Control & Rescue District, Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Collier County Courthouse, Naples Airport, Elite Jets, Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, DeAngelis Diamond, Physicians Regional Healthcare System, Tamiami Ford, and Hoffmann Family of Companies.

“I love how this project brought so many organizations and businesses together—all working toward a common goal of showcasing the potential and future success of our students,” explains Hanson. “It’s a true celebration of collaboration and community support. Kids are our future workforce. An investment in them is an investment in our shared tomorrow.” (pathwaysearlyeducation.org) –G.S.

Workshops are designed to develop and improve public speaking skills, as well as enhance interpersonal skills through manners, social etiquette, and professional behavior. BEJEWELED INTRIGUE

A DEEP DIVE INTO WHIMSICAL JEWELRY FROM ACROSS THE CENTURIES

Whether born out of symbolism or superstition, fantasy or allegory, romanticism or sentimentality, whimsy has been an essential element in adornment for most of documented history. In modern times, the theme borders on general obsession, with self-expression and individuality becoming tangible tokens meant to be worn proudly.

No one loved sentimental jewelry more than Queen Victoria, who commissioned a bevy of personalized jewels to mark most of her life’s major milestones. To immortalize the fresh flowers that she wore on her wedding day, her husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, gifted her a parure of enameled-gold orange blossoms. A mother of nine, Victoria fashioned brooches, charms, and pendants from each of her children’s baby teeth. When Albert died in 1861, the nation was

plunged into a state of mourning. As a substitute for the Imperial State Crown that was too large to wear atop her widow’s cap (a vestige of mourning garb she would don for the rest of her life), Queen Victoria had Garrard & Co. make a miniature crown suitable for her royal duties. By the time of her death in 1901, the unconventional piece had become so closely associated with her and her reign that it was placed in her coffin. Fast-forward more than 100 years and eccentric jewelry has a place in the market like

never before. Jewelry designer Nadine Ghosn describes herself as “the odd ball out” and seeks to make “ordinary products extraordinary.” Her oeuvre includes a collection entitled “YOUtensils” that features gold straws bent into bracelets and encrusted with pink sapphires, as well as miniature fork and spoon rings. Perhaps a favorite of Ghosn’s is a recent collaboration with Crayola in which she cast the brand’s signature crayons in 18-karat gold. Parisian designer Marie Lichtenberg is known for her symbolic love lockets. Many of these enameled and jeweled amulets bear positive mantras and universally recognized symbols of love, good fortune, and faith. Lichtenberg’s series of bangle bracelets bearing diamond-set phrases like “So far, so good” and “God’s favorite” hearken to Victorian sentimentality but in a new and playful way.

Animals have long been a source of wonder and whimsy within fine jewelry. Perhaps one of the most iconic jeweled animals is Jean Schlumberger’s “Bird on a Rock” for Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger debuted the design in 1965, inspired by a yellow cockatoo that he encountered on his travels abroad to Asia and the Caribbean. This year, Tiffany & Co. has reimagined the motif with a series of owls. Could we be more charmed?

Animals from makers like Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, and others continue to fetch a pretty penny on the secondary market. Whether it be birds or bees that catch your attention, you can expect to fight for your fancy on the auction block. «

Clockwise from inset: Tiffany & Co. Blue Book 2024: Owl on a Rock brooch; Queen Victoria in her small diamond crown and widow’s cap; Marie Lichtenberg “God’s favorite” bracelet; vintage Van Cleef & Arpels bird brooch; Nadine Ghosn Crayola bracelets.

Last year’s Barbie film was a cultural phenomenon—as was its press tour. However, due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the tour was cut short, and the film’s star, Margot Robbie, couldn’t debut all the looks that she and stylist Andrew Mukamal had prepared. Those outfits have been immortalized in Barbie: The World Tour (Rizzoli, $55). Released earlier this year and now a New York Times bestseller, Barbie: The World Tour features kitsch-meets-cool photography by Craig McDean and Barbie-inspired fashions by Vivienne Westwood, Donatella Versace, and Chanel, to name just a few. Writer Tim Allis recounts the life and eponymous retail operation of a maverick of modern retail in Henri Bendel and the Worlds He Fashioned (University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press, $35).

An in-depth historic review of Bendel’s life gives way to a celebration of his pioneering women’s department store concept, which helped to bring high fashion to the masses and revolutionized the way large department stores operated in the twentieth century. (ulpress.org)

DESIGN AND DECOR FOR LUXURIOUS LIVING IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

The Maston Family

A BACKYARD HIDEOUT JUST FOR THE KIDS RECEIVES A FESTIVE MAKEOVER DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Jozef and Ela Maston have lived in the Moorings neighborhood since 2010. Their single-story, original-issue ranch home sits on one-third of an acre. Though it’s an averagesize lot, the backyard appears bigger than it is, comfortably hosting a pool, putting green, hammock, sitting area, and specially designed treehouse for daughters Ania, 12, and Karolina, 9.

“You can’t beat the location,” says Jozef, a real estate agent with Compass, who is often found traversing the neighborhood in the family’s golf cart—dropping the girls off at school or meeting friends to catch a sunset at the beach.

Originally from Poland, Ela was already both a teacher and a nurse when she came to the United States to work as an au pair in 1999. “I always wanted to be an artist,” she says, though her parents encouraged her to get a more practical job. In 2002, she became an art teacher at Seacrest Country Day School. Many of her creations—mostly paintings—have been added to the walls of the family’s home.

When the girls were much younger, Ela’s parents, who visit from Poland, built a small playhouse for the backyard. Over eight years, Ela transformed the little white cottage into a sweet shop, a gingerbread house, a Jackson Pollock art studio, and more; themes included fairies, pumpkins, flowers, and butterflies. When Ania grew too tall to stand in the small house, “it was time to pay it forward and gift it to someone who would enjoy it as much as my girls did,” shares Ela.

During the pandemic, the family spent hours together in their backyard, and they identified a mature tree in the northeast corner as the perfect perch for a special kids’ hideout. As neither Jozef nor Ela have family nearby, holidays and special occasions are celebrated with an adopted family of friends, including “aunt” Carol Hastings; her husband, Patrick Fitzgerald; and “uncles” Randy Getman and Todd Livingood. Todd and Randy shared their building expertise and constructed a wooden fort in the tree. The charming retreat—nestled within sea grapes—is accessible only by ladder.

A mature tree in the backyard provides the perfect perch for a small and special hideout for two preteen girls.
Ela with Ania and Karolina (at right) regularly transforms the space with her artistic skills, adding paint, decor, and family heirlooms.

In the fall of 2023, after a year rebuilding from the ravages of Hurricane Ian, the family was finally able to move back into their home. “It had been a grim time,” remembers Ela. She decided she wanted to add some rosy cheer to the treehouse. Barbie was the popular movie of the year, so she chose the color pink as a theme, adding decor that was fresh, new, and happy. No stranger to detail-oriented work, Ela painted the space in muted hues and added lacy white designs that emulated a vintage wallpaper. During the holiday season, boughs of greenery hang from the perimeter and outline a wicker chair, while miniature Christmas trees are decorated with memorable ornaments.

Last year during the holiday season, when uncles Todd and Randy, Daisy the dog, Aunt Carol, and Patrick visited, the group spent time outdoors under the stars. As the sun lowered in the sky, the girls kept busy turning cartwheels on the cool grass, swinging, and putting in the backyard. When they needed a moment to themselves, they secreted off to their quaint quarters, which this year will likely provide similar sanctuary. «

A VIBRANT ART COLLECTION PUNCTUATES THE SLEEK INTERIOR OF A CONDO HIGH ABOVE COASTAL WATERS

After purchasing in Omega—a luxury condominium building in the Bonita Bay community with sweeping views of Estero Bay and the Gulf of Mexico—Denver residents Mark and Tori Smith knew what aesthetic direction they wanted to pursue for the interior.

“They have unique artwork,” notes principal designer Renée Gaddis, owner of Renée Gaddis Interiors, who was hired to impart timeless details and neutral colors within the condo to ensure the

SHIMMERING SPLENDOR.

couple’s art remained the focal point.

“They had specific requests that made it easier for us to execute,” she continues. “There was no questioning or guessing.”

Gaddis mentions that—because the pair was so focused on what they wanted—they even commissioned a couple of artworks and asked a Denver-based lighting firm to travel here to consult on lighting selections related to the art.

The foyer of the Smiths’ condo showcases Open Verse, a large acrylic on canvas painted by artist Jill Martin. In the great room, Gaddis situated an overstuffed sofa and two round ottomans near a large wood coffee table, creating an ideal area for entertaining and gathering. Borrowing space from the primary bedroom closet allowed the designer to add a wine refrigerator tower and additional storage within the custom eucalyptus built-in bar. A blue glass sculpture—made by Dutch artist Peter Bremers and purchased at Shaw Gallery in Naples—anchors the space.

A high-top rectangular table, surrounded by six substantial stools, fills in the area next to the kitchen. “When the homeowners are entertaining, the marble table doubles as a second island and is a fun spot to gather for casual dining,” notes Gaddis. Two brass geometric pendants suspended overhead lend a casual feel. A second dining area features a large round table and a chandelier of handblown glass globes. A brilliant orange three-piece painting—added from the clients’ personal collection—hangs above the buffet table.

Comfortable textures and neutral hues set the tone on the home’s 920-square-foot balcony. “The glass railing allows residents and visitors to see so much of the view,” says Gaddis. Although the dining chairs in the space resemble rattan, they are made of a woven synthetic fabric filled with batting that makes them extremely soft. “Everyone loves them,” adds Gaddis.

Teeming with natural light and exquisite vistas, the primary bedroom emanates a tranquil aura. Clad in steel-blue velvet, the custom bed conceals a pop-up television at its foot. This design trick means that, when the TV is not in use, those in repose have a clear view of the seascape.

Timeless details and neutral colors provide a sleek backdrop for carefully selected artwork that personalizes a twenty-third-floor luxury condominium in Omega at Bonita Bay.

“All guest rooms have killer views, too, and are en suite,” notes Gaddis. “My goal was to keep these gender-neutral and to create an oasis for guests.”

Cozy bedding, soft wallpaper, and layering of varied textures establish the desired ambience. In the largest of the three guest bathrooms, the designer introduced a floating console containing two sinks. Above, a large octagonal mirror and two rock-crystal sconces complement a wall covering with added sheen. Together, these elements contribute a touch of glamour to the space.

In the office, Mark’s custom desk—fashioned by Tori’s two brothers—is itself a work of art. Simple and elegant, it is situated in front of the custom Birdseye built-in office cabinetry that extends the condo’s neutral palette and showcases clean lines. A contemporary carpet—another piece in the condo resembling artwork—rests below the sleek desk.

In the powder room, mosaic marble tile works to create an upbeat vibe. Seamless and modern, a stone sink sits upon a unique base, creating the feel of a floating countertop.

Windows in every room provide abundant natural light and showcase sweeping vistas. The velvet upholstered bed in the primary bedroom (bottom right) conceals a pop-up television that, when not in use, allows for unobstructed gulf views.

“The clients were extremely knowledgeable and very easy to work with because they understood what they liked and what they didn’t,” Gaddis notes. Nonetheless, at the time of the unveiling, Gaddis preferred her clients be left alone. As she explains, “We want them to have that first intimate time alone; they can then take as long as they like to absorb and review.”

In the end, the Smiths were more than satisfied with the results. “Our clients, like us, were thrilled,” says Gaddis. «

A Chrismukkah Miracle

PRO TIPS FOR DECKING THE HALLS WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY AND CHALLAH

Chrismukkah entered our collective holiday consciousness in 2003 thanks to Seth Cohen, Adam Brody’s character on The O.C. As the story goes, Seth, the son of a Christian mother and Jewish father, created Chrismukkah as “the greatest superholiday known to mankind, drawing on the best that Christianity and Judaism have to offer.” Here, professional holiday decor designer Adam Floyd shares how to embrace each holiday within your seasonal decorating. (adamfloyddesign.com)

XKey elements: “It always starts with the basics for me,” says Floyd. “You have to have a menorah, dreidel, tree, wreath, and lots of lights! While everyone has their own taste level, there are no rules when it comes to lights and candles during the holidays. I say the more the merrier.”

Opt for fresh interpretations: “There are so many unique and beautiful menorah displays and Christmas trees available now; it makes decorating more fun. I have done a few nontraditional uses of the menorah. [For one,] instead of doing gifts around the base, we covered it with oversize iridescent white and silver balls. The other was a beautiful gold

menorah paired with champagne garland and a champagne tree.”

Opposite page: Pairing thoughtful elements from both religions creates new memories while honoring timeless traditions.

Keep the color scheme cohesive: “Don’t do a red and green Christmas tree and then a lot of blue and silver Hanukkah decor. My go-to for clients is a ‘Winter Wonderland’ theme. You can never go wrong with a white, platinum, silver, and gold palette. It’s so easy to twist that into something fun by adding a pop of literally any color. I realize there are traditional colors for both holidays, but if you can pick something and run with it for both, everything feels more cohesive, thought out, and elevated.”

To tree or not to tree? There is no question: “A tree is one of the most fun and festive things you can do during this

This page: Chrismukkah decor often utilizes design signatures such as menorah displays paired with trees, nontraditional menorah applications, and a color palette of metallics and white.

season. I feel like everyone should have one. It doesn’t have to be the traditional Christmas tree. You can make anything into a holiday tree. It’s about the lights and festive feeling it provides.”

Let some standout pieces merge both holidays: “As long as they aren’t tacky, I have no issues with blended items. But I think it depends

on how strict you are with the religious aspect of it.”

Play with variation on theme to avoid becoming kitsch: “Focus on repetition with the decor and carrying one theme throughout instead of mixing too many looks. Have a plan or end goal and stick to it.”

More is more … sometimes: “If everything is cohesive, I say more

is more—fill the space. If you have pieces that don’t necessarily go together, it’s best to focus on how you can make those stand out for their own moment.”

Create your wow: “I like creating a few big elements, but I also want the overall aesthetic to be its own wow moment. The biggest compliment is when someone sits on their sofa, taking in all the decor, and they start [noticing] those showstopper elements that are mixed throughout. It’s always in the details.”

A NICHE BUSINESS PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL HOLIDAY DECORATING SERVICES HELPS CREATE SPECIAL MEMORIES FOR CLIENTS

“We like to bring joy,” says Katie O’Flinn, the creative director of Light Up Naples Holiday & Outdoor Lighting, a specialty company she co-owns with her husband, Peter. “It’s fun doing a business we love.”

Katie and Peter met in Colorado, where they were both teaching kids to ski. They always knew they wanted to start a business together; it was just a question of what and where. Fourteen years ago, they decided to move to Naples, where Peter’s parents live. They became the publishers of Spotlight News magazine, which serves Naples, Bonita, and Estero.

Entrepreneurs at heart, they continued writing plans for potential service-based businesses. While Katie was out with girlfriends one night, a question was posed: “Does anyone know a company or someone who can put up Christmas decorations?” No

one did. Katie finally spoke up. She replied: “My husband is good at that. He can do it.”

Seven years ago, the couple decorated that one house. Realizing it was something they could do as both partners and a business, they enrolled in a short training course in Orlando. The next year, they decorated 10 homes—and then 30 homes the following year. “It was all through word of mouth,” explains Katie. Today, they have about 106 primarily exterior projects, but Katie reports that their interior business is also growing. When first exploring the opportunity, Katie noticed that most holiday decorations were owned by homeowners’ associations or landlords. The same decor was therefore used year after year. The O’Flinns decided to try something different.

They purchase and store the decorations and rent eveything out to their clients, allowing for a change of theme each year. Katie goes on a buying spree in January, when she attends the Atlanta Market. She peruses the offerings, identifies what is trending for the upcoming season, and places copious orders.

The boxes of new goods, along with triedand-true basics, start arriving in late summer and early fall and are stored in the company’s large warehouse in Bonita Springs.

Throughout the year, Katie meets with clients to assess their space and style, later creating a proposal detailing how decorations will complement existing design features. She recently hired a full-time designer who decorates trees in their warehouse all summer long.

Katie notes that neutral colors have been

popular the past few years. “Champagne—a soft gold that goes with everything—has been hot,” she says. “It suits our coastal environment and looks equally good with red and green, pastel blue, and light pink. And it’s not as harsh as white.”

Katie also says there is a definite push for vintage and traditional decor. “Remember the silver tinsel trees that your grandma had? They are coming back. So are vintage Santa and Frosty ornaments, as are displays in very traditional colors.”

Katie and Peter are especially excited that a changing light set with 80 different colors—the kind used at theme parks and zoos—will finally be available. “We can now install and change the colors for our clients on a seasonal basis,” she says.

When the season comes around, a team of workers delivers and installs everything “efficiently and in the least obtrusive way possible,”

notes Katie. This is not always an easy feat, especially when a client requests a 20-foot-tall tree for their personal residence. “It took two full days and a crew of six to install,” Katie says of the tree. “There were 1,200 ornaments— three pallets worth—and a custom-made tree skirt had to be ordered.”

Clients are usually excited to decorate again. And so are Peter and Katie, who believe this tradition creates a festive backdrop for spaces where memories are made. (lightupnaples.com) «

AEGEAN ODYSSEY

TWO OF GREECE’S MOST SUBLIME ISLANDS DELIGHT WITH NATURAL BEAUTY, CULTURAL TREASURES, AND VIEWS FOR DAYS

A VILLA OF ONE’S OWN

Most visitors to Greece make a beeline for the Cyclades islands, charmed by the whitewashed buildings silhouetted against the sapphire sea and the buzzy, cosmopolitan beaches. Fair enough. But as summer tourism swells in the charismatic island chain, there are good reasons to look elsewhere for that authentic Greek experience—quaint harbors and Byzantine monasteries included.

The cognoscenti already know about the Sporades. This island archipelago north of Athens offers the best attributes of the Aegean without the crowds or commoditized Hellenism. When approaching from the sea,

Geometric forms define the architecture at Nous Santorini.
Troulos Beach in Skiathos is known for its crystal-clear, calm water.

you notice the difference right away: the landscape is mountainous and lush, with pine trees tumbling down hillsides to the water’s edge. Beaches range from large sandy swathes to windswept coves defined by rock formations that recall ancient tales from the Odyssey

The jewel of the Sporades is Skiathos, which strikes the perfect balance between tranquility and excitement. The best way to experience it is by renting a hilltop villa with wraparound views of the Aegean. London-based The Thinking Traveller (thethinkingtraveller.com) offers several villas in the Sporades, including the exquisite Azalea on Skiathos. Located in Troulos on the island’s southwest coast, the

six-bedroom villa is designed in traditional Mediterranean style with stone-paved terraces and shaded verandas surrounded by mature olive and fig trees, bougainvilleas, and oleanders. The symphony of blues, greens, and earth tones gives a spectacular first impression, but the true spirit of the villa unfolds quietly over time.

Mornings start with a swim in the pool, followed by a traditional Greek breakfast of fruit, breads, cheeses, and honey—all sourced or produced locally and prepared by the villa’s cook, Eleni. Eleni and the rest of the staff provide flawless service but are also mindful of retreating after mealtimes so guests have total privacy.

A downhill path leads to Azalea’s private beach appointed with loungers, a stocked cooler, kayaks, and paddleboards. The water is refreshing, even at the peak of summer, and so clear you can see the veining on the pebbles beneath the surface. With a picnic lunch and some music, it’s easy to lose all track of time.

Outside of the villa is an island worth exploring. On the west coast, a hike in the woods of Mandraki, toward Elias Cove, leads to a forgotten beach and a thatch-roofed shack that serves some of the best seafood in Skiathos. Out east, near the windy beaches of Xanemo, there’s always a crowd to watch airplanes descend for landing. The seaside airport has a short runway, so landings are a bit of a spectacle as planes approach directly above beachgoers.

Further inland is the monastery of Panagia

Clockwise from above: Skiathos Harbor; Villa Azalea’s private beach; a terrace for dining and lounging is surrounded by olive trees and oleanders; the swimming pool on the lower level makes for a private retreat with sweeping views.

Evangelistria (Annunciation of the Virgin), one of the most historically significant monasteries in Greece. Here, in 1807, the occupied nation’s freedom fighters wove the flag of the independent state and swore an oath to free Greece from Ottoman rule. Today, it is still a working monastery with beautiful chapels, a hilltop café, a museum, vineyards, and an olive press. Locally produced products (some by the monks themselves) are for sale in a small shop. Evenings are best spent in Skiathos town near the docks, where shops, restaurants, and nightlife abound. For elevated Greek cuisine in a charming courtyard space, Marmita (marmitaskiathos.com) is a can’t-miss. From grilled Mastelo cheese with marinated peaches to roasted rabbit in Samos sweet wine, the offerings are creative and the experience world-class.

Mind you, a homemade dinner on the terrace of Azalea is no slouch, especially if Eleni’s famous pies are on the menu. With a star-strewn sky above and a summer breeze wafting up from the sea, there’s no better way to conclude a perfect day in Skiathos.

BESPOKE SANTORINI

Santorini’s volcanic topography and bluedomed whitewashed churches perched atop plunging cliffs have become symbolic of an idyllic Greek vacation. Yet most travelers to this Cycladic icon bounce only between the crowded streets of Fira (the capital city) and Oia, renowned for its sunsets, forgoing some of the island’s more esoteric but no less wondrous attributes.

Nous is known for its spa, featuring outdoor and indoor pools (above), as well as Turkish baths. Elio’s Italian American Chophouse (left) serves classic cuts and cocktails.
A DJ brings the vibes.
Nous Santorini offers experiences like private tours of the capital, Fira (above), or vineyards growing the famous Assyrtiko grapes of Santorini (above right).

To really get to know Santorini, it helps to have a local curate the experience. Nous Santorini, a Yes! Hotel, has stepped brilliantly into this role, crafting original and personalized activities for its guests. The hotel is centrally positioned in Mesaria, a village within 10 minutes of the capital, and offers dramatic views of the Aegean from the caldera’s edge. A compound of geometric structures that look both contemporary and ancient, the design-forward Nous is in itself a destination. The hotel’s art collection, viewable throughout the common areas and accommodations, is centered on Greek artists and tells a heritage story through a contemporary lens. Materials take a cue from the island’s volcanic landscape and arid surroundings, and bespoke furnishings—the work of some of the nation’s top designers—express a connection to land and sea.

But what truly sets Nous apart is its focus on experiences that don’t appear in the guidebooks. This can be anything from a customized wine trail tour discovering Santorini’s little-

known (but superb) vintages to a visit to an art gallery inside a subterranean wine cave. One of the most fascinating opportunities is an expertled excursion to Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan city that was destroyed during the circa-1600 BCE eruption that famously sank half of Santorini (then Thera) into the sea. At this living archeological dig, multistory buildings, incredibly well-

preserved frescoes, and intricate infrastructure have risen from ash and stone to reveal an advanced civilization.

The best way to cap days of discovery is with the sexy nightlife of Fira, which can range from intimate bars to the lively scene at Koo Club and Enigma. It’s all about balance. (yeshotels.gr/nous-santorini) «

FLORIDIANA

ISLAND TIME

IN SUNSET KEY, PRIVATE-ISLAND EXCLUSIVITY COLLIDES WITH THE IRREPRESSIBLE ENERGY OF KEY WEST

Private islands are usually synonymous with remote latitudes, where serenity is guaranteed and the feeling of escape is complete. That’s all well and good, but there’s merit to the idea of a little excitement just across the channel.

This kind of win-win isn’t always possible, which is why Sunset Key is so adored. The island sits within a stone’s skip of Key West, where legends of pirates, rum runners, and poets still color the culture and eccentricity is a virtue. We’ll get back to that.

First, let’s visualize: a boat named Lil Princess delivers you to a covered dock, beyond which splays a village of clapboard cottages with deep porches, picket fences, and metal roofs. On one side, palm trees and palapas line a beach; on the other, tables perch directly on the sand, facing west in anticipation of the nightly spectacle. Idyllic? Most definitely.

Sunset Key Cottages, the Opal Collection resort that inhabits a portion of the private island (the rest is an enclave of dreamy residences), may be the most charming of getaways in the Florida Keys. Everything is designed to reflect simpler times, from the Victorian-inspired architecture to the barefoot luxury of the interiors. The one-to-fourbedroom cottages are appointed in coastal style and a palette reminiscent of sea glass and thatch. Porches and balconies open to bougainvillea-studded gardens, and rocking chairs invite you to take it all in.

The pace is slow, but there’s plenty to do beyond the pool and beach. Fishing off the dock is encouraged—rods and bait are complimentary— and it’s common to see families angling for

yellowtail before retreating to their cottage for the daily breakfast basket. Kids love to chase down the “conch cruiser,” a tricycle that circles the car-free island to offer treats from its cooler full of ice cream. The spa is a delight, especially if you choose to have your treatment at the outdoor cabana, where the sound of swaying palms and sighing surf provides the perfect castaway soundtrack.

Evenings often start at the outdoor bar with a complimentary rum tasting and cocktail crafted by the jovial longtime bartender. Dinner is an experience to savor. Situated beachside under the shade of palms, Latitudes offers a seafood-forward menu (the Caribbean lobster risotto and Key West pink shrimp carbonara are classics), as well as a breathtaking sunset view.

For those who crave variety, Key West beckons. This southernmost American island is a living theater with colorful characters (and the odd feral chicken). You’ll find incredible diversity here, from prolific botanical gardens to the salvaged riches of Spanish shipwrecks to quirky shops and galleries—not to mention history and weirdness galore. There is truly nothing like Key West, which is why a stay at Sunset Key Cottages presents the best of both worlds. (sunsetkeycottages.com) «

HIGH ROAD

TOWER OF POWER

MERCEDES-AMG’S SPECTACULAR NEW S 63 E PERFORMANCE

HYBRID IS A 791-HP TOUR DE FORCE

The nineteenth-century English politician, historian, and thespian Lord John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton once pontificated that “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

While the good Lord Acton was reportedly referring to moral standards among his fellow man, had he been around today he might have used his famous quotation to reference the most potent, most powerful Mercedes-Benz

S-class ever made—the new AMG S 63 E Performance hybrid.

Talk about power and corruption. This rolling nuclear reactor packs an ungodly 791 horsepower and 1,055 pound-feet of torque. There are SpaceX rockets with less oomph. Stand on the gas and you’ll slingshot from standstill to 60 mph in a gut-churning 3.2 seconds. And this isn’t some hip-high, twoseat supercar. No, this is an S-class, the preferred ride of Cohiba-smoking captains of industry the world over.

Part of what makes this AMG-developed Merc so mesmerizing is what lies beneath. It’s a plug-in hybrid with a Molotov cocktail that combines AMG’s sublime 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a high-torque electric motor powering the rear axle.

But there’s an added twist: Mercedes-AMG worked with its Formula 1 team to refine the lithium-ion battery used in the race car for the

S 63. This high-output, 13.1-kWh pack delivers an instant and substantial jolt to the V8. While it doesn’t turn the big S into an EV, it can power the car in electric-only mode for just under 20 miles. That is plenty for stopstart commutes or runs to the gourmet grocery store. And when the electric runs out, the V8 seamlessly kicks in.

Where this new S 63 E is at its most spectacular is in everyday driving. In Comfort mode it is whisper quiet, serene, and stealthy as it glides along like a Gulfstream G500 for the road. But should you spot a gap in the traffic ahead or need to accelerate hard out of an on-ramp, a simple squeeze of the throttle will lunge the car forward like a rock out of a catapult.

And this is not some straight-line dragster. Find yourself a twisty backroad, dial up Sport or Sport+, and the big Benz awakens like a prodded rottweiler. The exhaust growls, the steering sharpens, and the 9-speed automatic

gets more urgent in its shifts. All this combined with the traction and stability of standard allwheel drive, the curve-carving response of rear-wheel steering, and the body control of AMG’s Active Ride Control adds up to a technical tour de brute force.

Yet, the car hasn’t forgotten its high-luxe Sclass pedigree. Yes, the pricier Mercedes-Maybach S 580 ($203,500 and up) might slather on a few more luxury touches, but this $186,200 S 63 E is not far behind. The cabin is wall-to-wall diamond-quilted napa leather opulence.

Cuddle up in the rear seat and toast to AMG’s engineering brilliance with a flute of Cristal from the Champagne chiller tucked behind the rear armrest. For a little nap time, recline your massaging and cooled seat and raise a footrest just like at your local AMC. And trust me, the pillowy back-seat headrests are the cushiest things you’ll ever lay your weary head on.

Up front, drivers are cosseted in massaging Barcaloungers as they gaze at a 12.3-inch digi-

tal instrument cluster and 12.8-inch tablet-like center display. Personally, I was mesmerized by the endless ribbons of color-changing LED light strips worthy of some Austin Powers disco. Yeah, baby.

The S 63 E also looks the part of the plutocratic powerhouse, complete with 21-inch AMG forged wheels, air-gulping intakes, and a gaping maw of a grille showcasing a pizza-sized, three-pointed star emblem. At more than 208 inches nose to tail, it’s nearly

This is, without argument, one of the finest, most rewarding high-performance sedans money can buy. Yes, BMW’s M760i hybrid is a close-but-no-cigar alternative. Closer still is Bentley’s latest 717-hp Flying Spur with V8 hybrid power, but that’s likely to cost around $280,000.

FORMULA

BOATS’

NEW 457 CCF IS A DREAM MACHINE FOR ANYONE WHO LOVES TO WET A LINE

Fish, be afraid. Very afraid. You’ll soon be swimming in fear of a lean, mean, fish-catching machine from Indiana-based Formula Boats—the brand-new 457 CCF (short for Center Console Fish).

Stretching 49 feet from pointy bow to chiseled stern, this $2 million battlewagon shares its smooth-riding, wave-slicing, twin-step

hull with its sibling 457 CC. Whereas the CC is perfect for weekend family fun at the sandbar, the CCF is targeted at the serious sports angler—hence the second steering console mounted high on the 18-foot-long hardtop, where you can scan the horizon Captain Ahab style for a catch.

Then there’s the sheer size and number of storage wells for when you haul in that 100-pound grouper. The main in-deck hold is not only the size of a small Pods storage unit, but it has its own ice maker that can produce around 20 pounds an hour. And at the back of the cockpit are twin 50-gallon pressurized live wells, with one doubling as dive-tank storage for when spearfishing takes your fancy. As for rod holders, there are more than you’ll see at your local Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Prior to 2022, Formula had been all about sporty bowriders and hardtop day cruisers. Then it debuted the innovative 387 CCS and CCF center console models, which have been

strong sellers. According to the company, feedback from 387 owners helped to fine-tune these new 457s.

Take music. Everyone knows that fishing folk out on the water love good tunes. A little Jimmy Buffett or Zac Brown always fills the time between reel-ins. So, this new CCF rocks a megawatt Rockford Fosgate sound system with a multitude of top-notch JL Audio multicolored LED speakers. And speaking of lighting, the boat comes with no fewer than 29 illuminated cupholders that, together with the speakers, pulse in time with the music. Groovy.

Everywhere you look there’s great form and functionality. At the helm station, for example, there are two rows of three-across seats with armrests, and the entire area is chilled by a standard 18,000-BTU air-conditioning system. The three front seats even get back coolers. Want extra airflow? At the press of a button the forward section of windshield powers open.

Another one of my favorite features? That would be the power-opening wind-blockers on each side of the helm station. These virtually eliminate the galeforce winds that whip around the cockpit at anything more than 30 knots. No more lost baseball caps or flying Ray-Bans.

That oversize cockpit at the rear is not only a great place to cast a line, but also to feed the crew. Behind the second-row seats there’s an outdoor kitchen with a Corian countertop, sink, fridge, and 120-volt Kenyon electric grill. When not in use, it’s covered by a deep bench seat from which you can watch the angling action.

Need to leave the fishermen to their own devices?

Stroll around the extra-wide, extra-deep, cushionfloored side decks to the bow area, where there’s a three-across sun pad and twin loungers with backrests.

There’s also an air-conditioned cabin where you can escape the sun, shower off, or overnight at your favorite anchorage. It includes a U-shaped sofa that converts into a double, a galley with a fridge and a microwave, a big TV, and a toilet with a separate shower. Headroom

throughout is an impressive 6 feet, 6 inches.

Formula was one of the first builders to design boats around Mercury’s revolutionary 600-horsepower Verado V12 outboards, starting in 2021 with its 53-foot 500 SSC fast cruiser. For the 457 CCF, Formula hangs three of them on the transom to deliver a knockout 1,800hp punch and a 50-knot top speed. A 700-gallon fuel capacity should give a 270-mile range at the 30-knot cruise speed.

The Spirit of Christmas PAst

For Stephanie and Richard Prebish, the restoration of a Naples landmark after Hurricane Ian spoke to their passion for preserving Florida history—and marked the renewal of a favorite local holiday tradition

Shot on location at Historic Palm Cottage, Naples

each year on the first Friday of December, Stephanie and Richard Prebish can be found at Historic Palm Cottage for one of their most-anticipated holiday events—the Christmas Gala, an annual blacktie soiree that raises funds to support Naples Historical Society. “The cottage and grounds are always decorated so beautifully, and it’s a fun, festive time,” says Stephanie.

Like so many activities, the party was canceled in 2022 in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. When the storm made landfall along Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast in late September, the society’s 3,500-square-foot flagship on Twelfth Avenue South was badly pummeled by the tempest, sustaining approximately half a million dollars in damage.

“The entire campus—Palm Cottage, the guesthouse, The Norris Gardens, and the structures to the east—took it on the chin,” says Richard, who has served on the nonprofit’s board for the past decade and recently stepped down as chair. “The buildings were inundated with storm surge, trees were knocked down, and the low-lying foliage was completely caked in a layer of muck.”

“The cottage and grounds are always decorated so beautifully, and it’s a fun, festive time.” –Stephanie prebiSh

Cleanup and restoration of Palm Cottage—the oldest house in Naples and listed as a National Register of Historic Places Landmark—commenced soon after. The most daunting task was refurbishing the original flooring dating to 1895, warped from the muddy water that breached the building’s lower level. Made of Dade County pine—an exotic wood no longer permitted for commercial use—the floor’s narrow planks had to be painstakingly removed, dried, cleaned, sanded, refinished, and reinstalled one by one.

“There was a tremendous amount of work done in a short period of time,” recalls Richard. “The restoration took eight months, which was lightning speed, considering that every contractor for miles was being pulled in 50 different directions.”

Renovations were privately funded through the philanthropy of Naples Historical Society supporters. “Our members and donors understand the importance of historic preservation, and thank goodness for that, because we never would have been able to recover as we did,” says Elaine Reed, outgoing president and CEO of the society, whose 18year tenure will conclude this month.

One of Reed’s greatest accomplishments while at the society’s helm was a right-of-first-refusal agreement she negotiated for the purchase of the residential property just east of Palm Cottage. The purchase came to fruition in 2021, effectively preserving the museum in perpetuity.

The main structure on the newer site is the future home of the Smith Exhibit Hall, named in honor of society

Historic Palm Cottage, now a 3,500-squarefoot museum, is the oldest house in Naples and listed as a National Register of Historic Places Landmark.
Richard developed an interest for local real estate when making trips to Southwest Florida with his father. After moving to Naples, he became a real estate agent specializing in luxury properties.

chair emeritus Mary Smith and her husband, Stephen, who provided a lead $1 million challenge gift for the $4.2 million acquisition. Slated to open in February under the new leadership of Nancy Dagher, executive director for Naples Historical Society since early 2024, the building will house museumquality interactive exhibits designed to immerse visitors in Florida history. “It’s a wonderful use of that property,” Richard says.

PAST IS PROLOGUE

Stephanie and Richard’s own shared history began in Battle Creek, Michigan, where they met in their youth and took junior golf and tennis lessons together. Both went on to attend the University of Michigan (U-M), where selfdescribed “science guy” Richard earned a bachelor’s degree in biol-

ogy and a master’s degree in public health, with a focus on genetics and epidemiology. Stephanie found her calling at the university’s school of art, receiving a bachelor’s degree in graphic design.

While at U-M, their yearslong friendship blossomed into romance and, soon after graduating, they moved to Naples. Both sets of parents and all but one of the pair’s siblings eventually followed. The couple wed at Saint Ann Catholic Church in Old Naples. They have two daughters— Maryn, 11, and Maggie, 9—plus an exuberant 5-year-old Bernedoodle named Dire.

When Richard was in graduate school, he often accompanied his dad on long weekends to Southwest Florida, where the family had a second home. Instead of lounging around the pool, father

and son enjoyed driving around looking at real estate. However, It wasn’t until Stephanie and Richard became Neapolitans in 2004 that he began to fully appreciate the charm and character of the area.

“What makes Naples so special is that the zoning requirements going back to the founding fathers were set up unlike anywhere else along the beach,” Richard notes. “There are no high-rises on the downtown shoreline, just singlefamily residential.”

Richard’s interest in and knowledge of Naples real estate led to his vocation as a luxury properties specialist with William Raveis Real Estate. Along with business partner Tom Campbell, he has brokered several significant luxury residential real estate transactions in Port Royal, Aqualane Shores, Old Naples, and other areas.

Ready, Set, Glow

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to experience Historic Palm Cottage in all its illuminated holiday glory. Christmas at Palm Cottage runs December 3–21, noon to 4 p.m., with guided tours Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Christmas Gala will take place December 6. The annual black-tie fundraiser supports Naples Historical Society programs and initiatives. Visitors can participate in Precious Pix, December 14, noon to 4 p.m., when society staff will be on hand to take smartphone photos in The Norris Gardens. (napleshistoricalsociety.org)

Stephanie and Richard sit in Historic Palm Cottage’s kitchen, one of the many rooms restored in record time following Hurricane Ian.

Stephanie channeled her education and artistic talent into her own graphic design firm but ultimately put the venture aside to focus on raising their daughters. Now that the girls are in school, she has enrolled in painting classes at Naples Art Institute. “In my graphic design courses, I mostly worked on a computer, which was fun, but there’s something about holding a paint brush that’s good for you,” she says.

Maryn and Maggie appear to have inherited their parents’ appreciation of Florida history and enjoy taking scenic routes through old towns. A favorite discovery was the Smallwood Store in Chokoloskee, a former trading-postturned-museum with art and artifacts depicting the story of pioneers who tamed the Florida wilderness. “The girls didn’t want to leave; they were taken by the whole experience,” says Stephanie.

When not exploring the state’s past, the family often spends free time on the beach near their Port Royal home. During winter breaks, they trade the powdery sand of the Gulf shore for the powdery slopes of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a location Richard and Stephanie have been visiting since the late ’90s and where they now own a vacation home. Meanwhile, in the days leading up to December 25, Christmas songs are a

constant in the Prebish home to help foster holiday cheer. In the front yard, lights are hung on large shade trees; Richard reports these are usually the first to go up and the last to come down in the neighborhood. The Prebish family also enjoys the Third Street South tree lighting, Johnsonville Night Lights at Naples Botanical Garden, and the Naples Christmas parade.

In the spirit of Christmas present, Stephanie and Richard will don their formal finest and kick off the holiday season at the Christmas Gala. Reflecting on where Palm Cottage was two years ago versus today, Richard says, “Historically speaking, it’s without question the most important structure in Naples. Looking back on all that happened, it’s better than ever.” «

Every year, Stephanie and Richard attend the black-tie soiree at Historic Palm Cottage, held the first Friday in December.

FACE OF

NEUROLOGY

It’s really a privilege for Igor Levy-Reis, MD, to do what he loves and have the work recognized, especially by his peers.

Doctors are eternal students—always learning, particularly from patients. As one of Dr. Levy-Reis’ mentors said, “it’s a house that’s never finished.”

The brain is the most fascinating organ and the last frontier of the body. When it stops working, life ceases to exist. Neurosciences have achieved a tremendous progress in understanding of the works of the mind in the past 20 years. From how memories are formed to how people behave. Maybe one day we can answer Freud’s—who by the way was a neurologist—question: “Where does a thought goes when is forgotten?”

The high complexity of medicine, particularly in neurology, with shorter time to spend with patients nowadays makes it challenging to practice at times, which is reflected in the increased number of doctors opting out of insurances. In spite of that, Dr. Levy-Reis tries ry to remember the lesson that Prof Osler taught more than 100 years ago: “Just listen to your patient, he is telling you the diagnosis.” And that will never change. The complexity of it though is a certainty that humans will never be replaced by any software which is unable to think and generate new hypothesis. If you want a guaranteed job in the AI era, become a neurologist. To make a diagnosis is like deciphering a complex puzzle. The greater the challenge the greater the reward.

Renée Gaddis has established herself as one of Naples, Florida’s premier interior designers, garnering recognition for over a decade. Gaddis’ versatility shines through her ability to navigate a wide range of styles, including coastal, contemporary, and transitional designs, alongside creating distinctive commercial spaces. In addition to her design prowess, Gaddis is a passionate advocate for children with heart disease. She actively leads fundraising initiatives for research, partnering with organizations like the American Heart Association and the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

JR Nocera is coming to an end of a third generation and getting ready to hand the torches—or spray guns—to his children. After a 52year run, Nocera’s younger children will be taking over the business that started with his grandfather, Gino Nocera, continued with his father, John Nocera, and reverted to JR Nocera. As AJ and Nicolas Nocera take the helm, JR will still be around the business watching the children. After 43 years of running the business, he’s pleased to hang up the torches and that family will continue to run the shop.

Curt Edwards has built a career serving families as a complexity manager. IN SEASON

FRUIT STARS

Carambolas have arrived just in time to grace fruit salads and any platter in need of festive ornamentation. When they reach their peak ripeness (turning a beautiful sunshine yellow), slice them through their distinctive ridges to produce multiple golden fivepointed stars that can dress up any dish with a sweet-tart tang. They aren’t just pretty faces—they are loaded with antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and cholesterol levels and can lessen the chance of developing fatty liver. They also can help regulate blood sugar and give the immune system a boost. While most people tolerate star fruit well, two cautions: Those with kidney disease should look but not touch. And everyone should be aware that carambolas contain caramboxin, a substance associated with neurological problems, so moderation is advised when eating them. –Karen Feldman

COOKING from Memories

AS SEASONAL GATHERINGS APPROACH WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS, TWO NAPLES CHEFS SHARE THEIR FAVORITE HOLIDAY RECIPES

RACHID EIDO

Rachid Eido, owner of Kareem’s Lebanese Kitchen, is a third-generation chef. When he was young, there were diverse cultures in Lebanon, and friends of other faiths were often included in his family’s large gatherings.

Lebanese Ouzi

For the filling

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 lb. ground lamb (or beef)

1 cup long-grain rice, rinsed

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

1 tsp. allspice

“Muslim people would celebrate together with Christians, sharing the happiness,” he says. A dish he associates with holidays and other occasions is ouzi. “Lebanese ouzi features spiced lamb and rice in a flaky pastry. It’s perfect for gatherings or a family meal.” (kareemskitchen.com)

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 cup pine nuts (optional) 1/4 cup chopped parsley

For the pastry

1 package of phyllo dough (or puff pastry)

1/2 cup butter, melted

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until softened. Add the ground meat and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat. Stir in the rice, spices, salt, and pepper. Add about 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, until rice is cooked. If using pine nuts, toast them in a separate pan and add at the end. Stir in the chopped parsley and let the filling cool.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lay a sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Layer a few more sheets, brushing each with butter. Place a generous amount of filling on one end of the pastry and fold it over to encase the filling. You can shape it into a triangle or roll it up. Repeat with the remaining filling and pastry sheets. Place the ouzi seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops of the ouzi with melted butter. Bake 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Serve hot, garnished with additional parsley or a side of yogurt sauce.

ASIF SYED

A native of India, Asif Syed owns 21 Spices by Chef Asif Christmas was always a workday until he began celebrating it just under a decade ago. For Eid, New Year, or an Indian festival, he’s likely to make goat biryani, a dish featuring savory goat and spiced rice. For Christmas, however, he turns to seafood. “Everybody does lamb, but I love lobsters,” he says. (21spicesdining.com)

2 lobsters (about 1.5 pounds each), split in half

1 cup Greek yogurt

2 tbsp. lemon juice

2 tbsp. ginger-garlic paste

1 tbsp. tandoori masala

1 tsp. ground cumin

1 tbsp. curry powder

1 tsp. paprika

1 tbsp. ghee, melted Salt to taste

1/4 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped

3 eggs, boiled and crumbled

3 tbsp. mozzarella, shredded  Lemon wedges, for serving

If using live lobsters, boil for about 3-4 minutes (parboil to cook slightly), then split them in half lengthwise. Remove the claws and crack them slightly. Clean the lobster halves, removing any unwanted parts. Take out all the meat (keep the shell intact) and dice into chunks. In a bowl, combine all ingredients listed from yogurt to cilantro, then work in crumbled eggs. Add in lobster chunks. Stuff the lobster mixture back into the shells and top with mozzarella. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Serve coconut curry sauce (recipe below) on the side.

Coconut curry sauce

1 cup coconut milk 1/2 tsp. ginger-garlic paste

2 tbsp. ghee  1/4 tsp. turmeric powder  Salt to taste

Boil all ingredients for 15 minutes. Cool one hour. Next, blend until smooth in a food processor. Boil again to thicken. Serve with lobster.

Tandoori Whole Lobster
Rachid Eido (left), a third-generation chef, likes to prepare Lebanese ouzi (above) for the holidays. Asif Syed (below) opts for including seafood in his Christmas meal, specifically lobster.

The Virtual Chef

Alex Trim was born to cook. His mother was trained in classical French cuisine and made dinner every night in their home north of London—and he joined her as soon as he could. The family moved to Asheville, North Carolina, when Trim was 14. After high school, he tried a semester of college, but it wasn’t for him. What followed was years working under chefs on Florida’s east coast, then in Chicago, where he climbed his way up at restaurants like threeMichelin-starred Alinea. Next came 18 months as a private chef for a pair of Miami businessmen and their families. Today, he’s a full-time social media chef, spending about 60 hours a week in his Naples kitchen making cooking videos. You can see him on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. NI caught up with Trim to talk about his story and videos. (@chefalextrim) –K.F.

NI: How did you become an online chef?

Trim: I saw an article online about social media creators, what they do, and what they make. It blew me away how well these [people] were doing. I figured if I could learn to edit videos, I already had the culinary skills. I dove in headfirst. I’ve been doing it since February 2023, and it’s really taken off. What’s your goal?

I want to demystify restaurant cooking. I do

recipes that are easy to follow. A home cook with some skills can replicate them. But there are recipes that no one is going to replicate, like taking seven hours to make potato pavé. I want people to see that, so when they go to a restaurant, they understand everything that goes into the small details. These make the difference.

What makes your videos unique?

Most chefs do content in big, monolithic kitchens. You see me cooking at home in a copper pan. I use truffles and caviar; it’s all available to the home cook. I’m showing people you can use them in a home kitchen. I show every step.

GIFTING GRAPES

Within the proper context, there is no better gift than wine. And while it certainly helps to know your giftee’s preferences, relying on crowd-pleasers is an essential objective. Many decide to play it safe by gifting a global, ubiquitous wine brand, but I suggest digging deeper and selecting a delicious bottle that is perhaps less well-known. A cherry on top would be to relay a smidgen of background on the wine—something as simple as: “a delicious red from the South of France made by a ski-instructor-turned-winemaker.” Here are three unique crowd-pleasers that will make an impression.

2

2022 Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Aligoté Les Auvonnes Au Pépé, Burgundy, France. Just 25 cases were made of this lovely white Burgundy (derived from vines planted nearly a hundred years ago). Sylvain believes the minerality of the soil is so beautiful that it would be a shame to make red wine on this terroir.

2019 Giulia Negri La Tartufaia, Piedmont, Italy. Giulia Negri (aka the Barologirl) took over her family estate at the age of 24—and her Barolos are ideal for anyone who loves elegant Burgundies from Volnay or Santenna. La Tartufaia is named after the truffle fields her grandfather planted on the property before her father replaced them with vineyards.

Making Spirits Bright

WARM UP THIS WINTER WITH A SPICE-IMBUED NEGRONI

FRANCESCACOVIELLO

There’s plenty to raise our glasses to during this festive month. From gift exchanges with friends and joyous family gatherings to the excitement of ringing in the New Year, ’tis the season for toasting merry moments. Make this month even more memorable by crafting a seasonal cocktail your guests won’t soon forget.

When brainstorming your holiday libation, consider these tips:

• Use in-season ingredients—such as

citrus, pears, apples, and persimmon—to elevate your drink with fresh, crisp flavors.

• Add warming spices—like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves—for comfort and nostalgia.

• Employ a simple formula, such as a ratio of 1 part spirit, ½ part sweet, ¼ part bitter, and ½ part sour. Or re-create a classic cocktail with a seasonal twist, like a gingerbread old-fashioned, an apple cider margarita, or a winter spice Negroni.

Equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, the Negroni has been a classic for more than 100 years—and this holiday variation is perfect for your next gathering. The addition of persimmon and warming spices results in a unique flavor profile that balances the bitter and botanical notes with the fruit’s nuanced sweetness.

XThe Winter Spice Negroni Ingredients

1/2 oz. fresh persimmon puree (using 1 ripe persimmon)

1 oz. Winter Spice Gin (recipe below)

1 oz. Campari

1 oz. sweet vermouth

Persimmon slice or a twist of orange peel to garnish

To prepare the persimmon puree, peel the ripe fruit and blend the flesh until smooth. Strain the puree to remove the pulp. Then, in a shaker with ice, combine the spiced gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, and persimmon puree. Shake well and strain into a chilled glass. Add a slice of persimmon or a twist of orange peel to garnish.

Winter Spice Gin Ingredients

1/4 cup equal parts cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg

750-ml bottle of gin

Add the spices into a dry pan and heat gently for 2 minutes to release their aromas. Add the spices to a jar, pour in the gin, and seal. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 5 days, shaking the jar gently every day. After 5 days, strain the gin to remove the spices.

AWARENESS

ALLERGY ALERT

If you develop puffy eyelids, itchiness, or other concerning symptoms after applying eyelash extensions, you may be experiencing an allergic reaction to the glue. While these allergies are rare, they can happen, according to Dr. Brandon Kirsch, a dermatologist at Kirsch Dermatology and MedSpa in Naples. He explains that this typically occurs when you’re already sensitized to one of the ingredients in the glue, which means symptoms might not occur the first time the product is used. And, because people often use multiple skin care products, Kirsch adds, it’s often difficult to pinpoint the specific allergen. If you’re experiencing an allergy that may be tied to eyelash adhesive or another product, Kirsch recommends stopping the use of all products but the bare minimum. “Then, you can fully reintroduce things, one after another,” he says. He suggests reintroducing the product that seems the most likely culprit first and starting with a patch test. For this, apply a small amount of the potentially problematic product to the inside of your elbow, cover it with a bandage, and then check for a reaction—first after 24 hours and then again after 72 hours. If you have a reaction to lash-extension glue, Kirsch recommends removing the lashes immediately and using over-thecounter hydrocortisone cream (1 percent) or seeing a dermatologist. “Generally, the sooner a physician sees you, the better,” notes Kirsch, who likens an allergic reaction to a fire that gets harder to extinguish the more it grows. For an alternative to lash extensions, he suggests products like RevitaLash, which grows and thickens your own lashes. (kirschderm.com) –Erika Klein

BOATING STAY SAFE ON THE WATER WITH THESE HELPFUL POINTERS

Winter is a great time for boating in Southwest Florida, but make sure you’re taking appropriate precautions. Patrick Casey, owner of The Captain School with a location in Naples, shares a few tips for remaining safe while enjoying our waters. (captainschool.com)

STAY AWARE.

Casey notes that it’s critical to practice common sense and avoid distractions while boating. “We have near misses because people play loud music or have new gauges on the boat; they’re paying attention to something other than where they’re going,” he says. “There are a lot of distractions, more distractions than we’ve ever had in the past,” he continues, citing cell phones and other electronics as potentially problematic. Casey adds that it’s also essential to keep an eye on the weather. “Everyone who’s lived or been [in Southwest Florida] knows the weather can change in a matter of minutes,” he explains.

2

HAVE A PLAN.

Casey recommends creating what is known as a “float plan” to leave behind with a friend or family member. This plan should include important information about where you’re going, who’s aboard, any contact information, and the anticipated time of return. If you encounter an issue, the plan may aid search and rescue efforts.

3

GET TRAINING.

Finally, be sure to undergo training. “It’s about knowing what to do, what your boat will handle, and what to tell other people on the boat regarding how to help you,” explains Casey. He also suggests practicing for certain situations, such as if someone goes overboard, if there’s a fire, or if the motor dies.

Courses through the United States Power Squadrons or the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are two educational options he recommends. With these, besides handling emergency scenarios and equipment instruction, you will learn protocols for navigating traffic and other issues. If you boat often, you may not need to repeat the course, but he adds that you can refresh your knowledge with information available online.

FILL UP on Fiber

Fiber isn’t just essential for digestion. It can also help lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and recent research published in the journal Food & Function suggests it may even be linked to a lower risk of depression, though more studies are needed. The USDA recommends adults eat around 28 grams of fiber per day, but most Americans don’t get enough. A lack of fiber may increase one’s risk of heart disease, constipation, and diabetes.

“You can slowly add in fiber by choosing whole grains instead of refined grains and eating fruits and vegetables rather than drinking juices,” says Lisa Fenda Wallace, owner of Nutrition by Lisa in Naples. She recommends highfiber foods like cooked black beans (around 8 grams of fiber per half cup), a medium apple (4 grams of fiber), and chia seeds (10 grams of fiber per 2-3 tablespoons).

“Fiber is important for all ages and should be added slowly to avoid any gastrointestinal discomfort,” Wallace notes. “Start by making it a goal to eat more fiber at breakfast, for example making a chia pudding or toast from whole-grain bread instead of white.” (nutritionbylisa.com)

Turn up the heat in your yoga class—literally—with hot yoga. The practice takes place in rooms heated to temperatures between 95 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Rachel McCrary, owner of Arts & Hot Yoga in Naples. “The heat allows the muscles to warm up faster, enabling a deeper stretch [and] making it easier to achieve challenging poses,” she notes.

Other potential benefits of hot yoga include increasing strength, reducing stress, and improving cardiovascular function, though some research suggests that other forms of yoga may offer these benefits as well. McCrary says these can often be felt immediately following a hot yoga class.

“Most often reported from our community is the stress relief,” she explains. “People come in carrying the weight of the world and leave feeling like they were able to set it down. The biggest misconception of hot yoga is that it is extremely difficult and only for advanced students.”

While McCrary explains that anyone can try hot yoga, it’s best to consult a medical professional before your first experience if you have a health condition. While in class, hydration is key as is listening to your body. McCrary also recommends taking breaks as needed. (artsandhotyoga.com) —E.K.

A BETTER PREGAME

The idea for More Labs’ Morning Recovery was born when company cofounder Sisun Lee was on a trip home in South Korea and tried a bottled tonic available in local convenience stores after a late night out. He woke up feeling great—thanks to DHM, a plant-derived compound that helps break down alcohol-induced toxins so your body can flush them out faster. Most effective when taken before you drink, Morning Recovery is composed of DHM, electrolytes, and other beneficial ingredients (including vitamin B and C complex) that all work together to speed up recovery. SMARTER DRINKING

AVOID DRINKS HIGH IN CONGENERS. WHILE ETHANOL IS THE MAIN ACTIVE INGREDIENT IN ALCOHOLIC DRINKS, THEY ALSO CONTAIN VARYING AMOUNTS OF CONGENERS. THESE TOXIC BYPRODUCTS ARE FORMED WHEN SUGARFERMENTING YEASTS PRODUCE ETHANOL. ALCOHOLIC DRINKS WITH HIGH LEVELS OF CONGENERS (PARTICULARLY BOURBON BUT ALSO COGNAC AND TEQUILA) ARE CORRELATED WITH MORE INTENSE HANGOVERS. COLORLESS DRINKS, LIKE VODKA, GIN, AND RUM, HAVE LOWER LEVELS OF CONGENERS.

USE THE ONE-FOR-ONE RULE. DRINK ONE GLASS OF WATER FOR EVERY ALCOHOLIC DRINK YOU CONSUME. HORMONES LIKE VASOPRESSIN, ALDOSTERONE, AND RENIN THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH DEHYDRATION ARE HIGHER IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE A HANGOVER. FOLLOWING THIS RULE WILL HELP TO LOWER THOSE DEHYDRATION HORMONES AND ALSO SLOW YOUR PACE OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION.

GOOD NATURE

GO FOR THE GLOW

FANNING THE FLAMES OF THE FIRE WITHIN

Who doesn’t swoon for the glamour of Naples, both the breezy lifestyle and the elegance of a night out dining alfresco under the stars? But at this time of year, it’s also fascinating to dip into the deeper meanings of the word “glamour,” which linguistic scholars believe originated from the same root as “gleam” and “glow.”

This glimmering path leads not only toward glamour’s celebrated decadence but a certain luminosity that we all treasure deep down.

In my work as a holistic practitioner, people often ask me how to achieve glowing skin. Over the years, I’ve shared dozens of practices to help clients reveal that unmistakable all-natural glow—from dry brushing and juicing to reflexology and breath work. But truly bringing about that special glow is more of a lifestyle than a set of techniques, incorporating clean eating, healthy movement,

natural skin care, stressreduction practices like meditation, and spending time in nature and with friends and family. That last point is so important. Generosity, happiness, and togetherness are a part of what creates the light inside, that magical radiance we sometimes mistake for glowing skin. Have you ever met an older person who just seemed to glow from within, shining with vitality and bright eyes despite their years? For me, that illumination of well-being and inner knowing reflects so much more than consistent wellness practices. It’s the aura of someone who is at peace with themselves and the ones closest

to them, someone who knows their own heart.

On a scientific level, researchers have found that oxytocin—the hormone released through social bonding, love, and friendship—helps to reduce stress and regulate the nervous system. Furthermore, a study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology drew a correlation between higher oxytocin levels and more youthful-appearing skin. And while outward benefits are wonderful, creating a space where the light inside can refuel itself is also a delight. This holiday season I’m devoted to not only experiencing a little of that very special opulence, but making time for the meaningful connections that kindle the type of inner fire that can light up a room. Now that’s glamour. «

True glamour is reflected through an inner radiance derived from overall well-being.

WEALTH

A BRIGHT INVESTMENT STRATEGY

GOLD PRICES HIT A RECORD HIGH THIS YEAR, BUT WILL THE YELLOW METAL LOSE STEAM?

There was certainly a gold rush in 2024. The precious metal’s price reached new record highs nearly every quarter—hitting a remarkable $2,600 an ounce by mid-September. It was an impressive rally that experts forecast will continue in the year ahead.

The world’s fourth-largest asset manager conducts an in-depth report on the gold market twice yearly. State Street Global Advisors’ “Gold 2024 Midyear Outlook” shows three factors contributing to spikes in the gold market: central bank purchasing, geopolitical risk, and economic uncertainty.

“The kind of position we’re in, both macroeconomically and geopolitically, and in terms of the internal market dynamics (developments in the balance between demand and supply) all tend to point to higher prices, and that’s what we’re expecting,” says George Milling-Stanley, chief gold strategist at State

Street Global Advisors. “It’s really just a case of thinking, ‘Well, how high?’”

Here’s a breakdown of why his firm feels confident gold prices won’t fall in 2025.

CENTRAL BANK PURCHASING

Second-world countries that have experienced economic growth but are still not fully developed economies are called “emerging markets.” Brazil, Russia, India, and China are a few of the biggest emerging markets in the world. Milling-Stanley says that over the past 14 to 15 years, the central banks of those— and other emerging markets—have been using cash reserves to buy gold to diversify their assets and reduce their dependence on paper currencies. The increase in demand has dramatically increased gold’s price.

“When we saw first-half figures, it was the highest purchasing by central banks that

we have ever seen in the first half of a year,” Milling-Stanley says. “We may well be on track for another record year.”

GEOPOLITICAL RISK

Gold buying worldwide nearly doubled after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. U.S. sanctions froze many of Russia’s assets, and the U.S. dollar and the Euro are no longer accepted currencies in Russia. Countries like China and Turkey have been watching and don’t want their central bank assets frozen. So, they’ve turned to gold. And now, with an open conflict between Israel, Iran, and Lebanon, prices will likely continue to increase along with geopolitical tensions.

Then there’s the fact that we’re coming off the heels of a tight presidential election in the United States. Joseph Cavatoni, the World Gold Council’s senior market strategist for

North America, says presidential elections always cause emotional reactions for investors.

“It’s never more emotional than right now,” Cavatoni says. “But what’s really at play here is waiting to see how policies develop and whether or not the congressional elections are going to give them the ability to have a positive or negative impact on global policies.”

ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY

People tend to buy gold during an economic downturn because it’s tangible. Times are uncertain, and that’s the psychology that motivates many gold investors. And while the economy may be heading in the right direction, that doesn’t always calm investors.

“Inflation is sticky,” Milling-Stanley says. “We don’t expect [it] to disappear overnight.”

Many have turned to gold as an inflation and currency devaluation hedge. Historically, high inflation has led to lower values in the U.S. dollar. In turn, the demand increases the

price of gold. A good example is the 2008 financial crisis; as real estate, bonds, and equity values fell, more investors turned to gold, driving higher prices.

INVEST STRATEGICALLY

Despite what gold bulls may claim, no one can accurately predict how high prices will reach or when the peak may occur. Those interested in adding gold to their portfolios or increasing their investments should do so strategically, not tactically, to cash in big by the end of the year.

Milling-Stanley and Cavatoni agree that gold investments should comprise, at most, 10 percent of a portfolio. Those considering taking this step should talk with a financial advisor or consultant first.

“I would say to a client, an institution, an individual, you should be looking somewhere between zero to 10 percent if you don’t hold gold today, and start working with your advisor on how to get that analysis to make it optimal,” Cavatoni says. “The right role for gold in your portfolio is a strategic long-term allocation. Buy it, hold it, leave it, and it’ll give you what you need.” «

LAST WORD

What is Lafayette 148’s brand ethos?

We focus on dressing accomplishing women, recognizing her complex life and need for sophisticated versatility. Our design philosophy begins with studied, uncomplicated, and intelligent shape balanced with creativity and innovative on-fabric design and development.

What are important inspirations when building a new collection?

Lafayette 148’s aesthetic has been built for almost 30 years, capturing the spirit of SoHo (our birthplace) in the late ’90s when the gallery culture of downtown Manhattan was defined by the merging of art, architecture, and fashion for the first time. Our brand DNA is very much focused on an understated ’90s aesthetic with a true appreciation for art and architecture. Our brand is also fully vertical, so our appreciation of craftsmanship and quality are always top of mind. This, together with the fact that the brand is women-founded/ women-led, [means] we look seasonally for inspiration that references our story through craftsmanship, women, and either art or architecture. And through this unique lens, for Resort 2025, we looked to the Venetian canals, celebrating [female] artist Giulia Lama and her commitment to the craft of oil painting, creating the next chapter of the Lafayette 148 wardrobe.

REAL TALK WITH...

Emily Smith

We catch up with the creative director of Lafayette 148

Tell us about the Save Venice capsule collection.

In 2021, we began a journey with our friends at Save Venice that brought us back to Venice, Italy, in the late 1700s to uncover the story of oil painter Giulia Lama. Lafayette 148 proudly sponsored the restoration of her Baroque masterpiece Virgin in Prayer, a conservation that explored both the legacy of a groundbreaking woman artist as well as the all-women team of conservationists who restored the vibrancy of her work previously muted by time. The capsule collection is a tribute to the sophisticated

color and craftsmanship that Lama expressed in her painting.

What is a must-have piece from the Resort 2025 collection?

The sartorial velvet suit, worn by Arizona Muse for the campaign, featuring the exclusive Italian artwork print inspired by Giulia Lama’s recently restored oil painting.

What has been a memorable career moment for you?

I’m most proud of the opportunity I’ve had to work so closely with so many extraordinary women who inspire me, have believed in me, and continue to entrust me with carrying the brand forward with a shared vision. There is my mentor Barbara Gast—whose contagious passion for intelligent design fueled my love of make and construction—and Deirdre Quinn, a born entrepreneur, who co-founded Lafayette 148 on the ideals of kindness, intelligence, and integrity. They’ve built the foundation for the community of women supporting women that we continue to build here at Lafayette 148 every day, both internally and with the women we dress all over the world.

Best piece of advice received or given?

Celebrate artistry in all its forms— past, present, and future! One of our customers once said to me, “Elegance never goes out of style.” I love that. It can be interpreted in many ways, but I always consider the statement in everything we do.
