TO A HOPEFUL HOLIDAY

The holiday season is upon us. I’ll be frank: It’s been a bit of a challenge to excite myself. As our community continues to recover from Hurricane Ian, creating a fantastic, festive tree and shopping for the perfect gifts for family and friends seem at least somewhat trifling. I suppose nothing puts life into perspective more quickly than an act of God. Ironically though, catastrophes like Ian can have unifying effects and can bring people closer—much like the power of the holidays, I suppose. And, when I think about the ways Southwest Florida has cried together, rallied together, and forged ahead together, my heart delights in sanguinity.

With this issue of Naples Illustrated, we’re happy to feature part-time Naples designer Shelley Johnstone Paschke, whose brilliant smile you’ll find on our cover. Believe it or not, we were able to photograph her in her Bay Colony condo less than two weeks following the storm. Johnstone Paschke, who has a home in Lake Forest, Illinois, made a special trip to Naples and created a lovely holiday tablescape for us to photograph. She’s a talented designer with a beauti ful, accessible aesthetic; what’s more, people have nothing but wonderful things to say about her kind, caring nature. Thus, it was no surprise to me that she prioritized our photo shoot to bring NI readers—many of whom, like me, may be in special need of holiday beauty—a magnificent, merry tablescape. Read more about Johnstone Paschke and her design perspectives, starting on page 94.

With or without a hurricane, the holidays are a hectic time for many. To help you make the most of them—and per haps preserve sanity in the process of all that jolly-making—Gaylene Salomons, NI’s associate editor, has devised a few ways to ensure self-care in “Me Time,” beginning on page 108. For more on personal well-being, refer to page 152, where Tammy Fender shares how aligning oneself with nature can benefit general health and wellness.

As I start to ponder holiday gifts for those I love, I recall that I usually struggle with at least one purchase. If you’re like me or just in need of a few gift-giving ideas, check out “Finds,” starting on page 60, which showcases some fabu lous items for men. If you’re looking for jewelry suggestions, flip to page 102. Executive editor Mary Murray has cu rated a dazzling collection of earth-toned baubles, the perfect stuffing for stockings.

With December here, we at Naples Illustrated wish you and yours a holiday bustling and bursting with peace, hope, and joy.

Season’s greetings,

Jennifer Johnson likes to talk. “I’m all about connecting and public speaking,” she explains, sharing that before podcasts were a thing, she hosted a radio show. Since launching The Fashionista Life podcast in July 2022, Johnson has already recorded 20 episodes, discussing such topics as interior design, beauty, parenting, and finances.

Johnson is the owner and founder of Florida’s largest lifestyle consign ment store, True Fashionistas, located in the Galleria Shoppes in North Naples. Along with her husband, Brad, she opened the store in 2011 and

quickly grew it to a more than 13,000-square-foot consignment store with online sales.

The motivation for her podcast was born from her desire to connect with her loyal customers and from her belief that “the spoken word is more relatable and connectable.” She also comments that podcasts are easier than blogs and radio to reach people because they are on-demand programs that people choose to listen to; they actively seek them out. Her topics are primarily aimed at women. She loves to share business advice and inspirational stories and says she’s embarking on another project: virtual business courses to help other aspiring female business owners realize their dreams. NATURE LIGHTS OUT

By day, our beaches are populated with sunbathers; by the light of the moon, from March through October, female sea turtles lumber through the sand to lay their eggs. One of the oldest creatures on earth, the sea turtle is an endangered species, with only one in 1,000 surviving to adulthood. In addition to the federal Endangered Species Act of 1973, Florida statutes afford protection to the species, as well as to the habitat of the marine turtle.

Even with laws in place, saving sea turtles has become a community endeavor. The Col lier County Parks and Recreation Sea Turtle Protection Program surveys more than 22 miles of beaches daily from May 1 to October

31, monitoring sea turtle activity. A report of its efforts is compiled every year and available online for all to read (collierparks.com).

Data has shown that adult sea turtles nest more frequently on dark beaches. Since 2007, Collier County Parks and Recreation staff members have been in charge of diminishing light pollution on the beaches during nesting season, conducting semimonthly investiga tions to ensure all lights capable of being turned off are done so by 9 p.m.; any others must be dimmed or diffused.

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida began a sea turtle monitoring project on

Keewaydin Island approximately 40 years ago to protect nests from predators like raccoons, ghost crabs, armadillos, and opossums. This past season, researchers documented record nest numbers—count ing well over 600 on the seven mile stretch of beach. Since 1982, research teams have documented more than 8,200 nests, help ing 380,000 hatchlings. Through the years, the sea turtle program has been supported primarily through philanthropy.

Even small grants are making a difference. Collier County Parks and Recreation received $1,500 from the Collier Community Founda tion this past season for reusable sea turtle nest cages on Vanderbilt Beach, protecting thousands of eggs from wildlife depreda tion. Since 2018, the foundation has awarded $5,500 to the cause.

This past summer, by mid-July, more than 300 more sea turtle nests were already recorded on Collier County beaches than the previous year, slowly helping the sea turtle recover from its endangered species status. (conservancy.org; colliercf.org)

Golden HEROES

Famous for its lustrous coat of gold, the golden retriever is one of America’s most popular dog breeds. The Ameri can Kennel Club describes the golden retriever as intelligent, friendly, and devoted. The flattering descriptions continue: outgoing, trustworthy, eager to please, and easy to train. In other words, goldens are the perfect companions.

And that’s why many are bred for a life of service, including assisting wounded veterans and children with life-changing disabilities as part of Golden PAWS Assistance Dogs. Fol lowing Hurricane Ian, Golden PAWS sent out a crisis team of dogs and handlers to visit, com fort, and console first responders, senior living facilities, and families who lost everything.

The nonprofit organization was founded in Naples by Jeannie Bates in 2012. As Florida is home to the third largest wounded veteran

population in the United States, the request for service dogs is great.

Golden PAWS quickly grew out of its first facility and recently moved alongside Pine Ridge Road, transforming the former Naples Harley-Davidson dealership into a training center and headquarters. The new facility, the Ken & Susan Meyer Center for Golden PAWS Assistance Dogs, will house and train up to 40 dogs at a time, plus up to 10 puppies, dou bling the program’s former capacity. Golden PAWS dogs spend two and a half years in an intensive training program. Upon graduation, the trained dogs provide lifesaving assistance for their handlers, including retrieving medical supplies, providing balance assistance, pick ing up dropped items, and alerting hearingimpaired individuals to certain sounds.

In only 10 years, more than 100 dogs have been placed with veterans and children throughout Florida; preference is given to those living in Southwest Florida, and Golden PAWS dogs are always placed at no cost to those they serve, providing a life-changing and life-saving gift. NEW LEADER AT THE HELM

Barbara Evans has been appointed the new CEO of Champions For Learning, Collier County’s community-based nonprofit organization in support of education.

Evans succeeds Susan McManus, who stepped down in May, after 32 years with the organization. McManus served on the founding board of the organization in 1990 and became the staff executive leader at Champions For Learning (The Education Foundation of Collier County) in 1993.  Evans is an experienced nonprofit executive and will take the lead on Champions For Learning’s an nual fundraising efforts, increasing capacity to support more students and educators and expanding programming to support the needs of students in Collier County. Evans brings 20 years of nonprofit leader ship experience to the organization; she was formerly chief develop ment officer at Harry Chapin Food Bank. She also served as director of development for Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation and spent six years as chief development officer at Grace Place for Children and Families in Naples.

“I am honored to be joining the exceptional team at Champions For Learning,” says Evans. William Lutz, board chair at the organization, states that Evans brings a wealth of nonprofit success and a strategic vi sion. He believes under her direction the organization will have the ability to grow and to serve even more Collier County students and educa tors. (championsforlearning.org) —G.S.

You’re redefining American sportswear by deconstructing and reimagining fashion classics. What’s your process when designing a collection?

My design philosophy is simple: Clothing should be beautiful and effortless. Each season, I challenge myself to look at my signatures with a fresh perspective to reflect what feels modern now. My process is personal and intuitive, and Resort 2023 was inspired by the way I see women dressing today: mixing past and present, high and low, couture and sport. I designed the pieces as “building blocks” of personal style—an invitation for creativity and self-expression. American sportswear is the through line in every collection: simple, elegant clothing designed for the way we live.

What three pieces from the Resort 2023 collection will you be wearing on repeat?

Our trompe l’oeil color-block sweater is chic with a hint of sport, mimicking the look of three pieces layered in one. My new everyday bag is our Marshmallow satchel, named for its ultra-soft leather and weightless construction. And I love the bold, architectural shape of our T Block Heel mules.

The new Love Letters pendant collection has a personal story. What inspired the designs?

I have always been fascinated by good luck charms. My father was superstitious, too; he carried gold lucky dice in his pocket, which inspired our Love Letters necklace. It has six interchangeable dice with gold letters and symbols, so you can create your own monogram.

Tell us about your fascination with interior designer Madeleine Castaing, and how she influenced a capsule collection?

Madeleine Castaing has been an inspiration for as long as I can remember. She ushered in a new era of interior design in the 1940s with her vivid juxtapositions of color and print, and she was a fiercely independent entrepreneur. I have decorated my home and stores with Castaing’s wallpaper, textiles, and rugs, so I was thrilled to partner with her estate on a capsule collection. DESIGN AND DECOR FOR LUXURIOUS LIVING IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

Intentional SIMPLICITY

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LIVING FLOW SEAM LESSLY IN A MODERN WATERFRONT MANSION

Rivaling a five-star resort, this sophisticated estate in Port Royal, nestled amid all the pleasures coastal living offers, was designed for easy living. Situated at the northern tip of Runaway Bay, the home features long canal views and affords direct Gulf access by boat. The impressive home con veys luxury from the dramatic front elevation to the expansive outdoor living area at the rear of the home.

As is often the case with coastal properties, this parcel of land—a re verse pie-shape with ample street acreage and only narrow water front

age—came with its own set of challenges. “Turning negatives like the angled side property lines into positives proved to be the best solution,” says John Orgren, residential studio director at MHK Ar chitecture & Planning in Naples.

“We angled the master wing and the outdoor living area to run alongside the borders,” explains Orgren. “The result is the resi dence looks like it is hugging you, adding to the dynamic charac ter of the home. It’s a fantastic lot with a waterway view that goes on forever. When you are on the covered second-floor patio, you can see the horizon.”

Ryan Benson, co-owner at A Vernon Allen Builders—custom builders in Naples since 1951—introduced Renée Gaddis, prin cipal at Renée Gaddis Interiors, to his client. Before ground was even broken for the custom 7,320-square-foot home, Gaddis was adding her expertise to the project.

“The builder had worked with the client and was excited to work with her again,” notes Gaddis. “The client had built houses and renovated condos in the past, so she was very familiar with the

process and was good at making decisions. She knew what she wanted the final outcome to look like.”

Because the two-story house is set back from the road, the residence could readily accommodate a variety of large windows (mostly void of coverings) on the street side. From the generous clear glass-paned front doors to matching multi-paneled windows in the dual ga rages, natural light pours into the home. Even the staircase, enclosed in clear glass panels secured by silver fastenings and topped with narrow light wood railings, has a large window for a backdrop. The focal points—a Lindsey Adel man chandelier made of lights that zig and zag in a multi tude of directions and a colorful Hunt Slonem bunny print on the staircase wall—impart a sense of cheer to a utilitar ian element.

To enhance the dwelling’s abundant long-water views on the south side of the home, a neutral palette of white, creams, and grays was applied throughout the residence. In the rooms at the rear of the home, low-profile furnishings were chosen, so the vast view would not be interrupted.

For convenience and privacy, the primary bedroom suite is located on the main floor, with four guest bedroom suites and a grand room with six bunks and six lockers situated upstairs. Performance fabrics were generously employed in the most utilized rooms and in the bunk room. In the bath

rooms, sleek, low-maintenance porcelain slabs resembling marble were selected. “The client did not want clutter and wanted to enjoy the home with her children and grandchildren,” says Gaddis.

With guests perpetually coming and going and often staying for long periods of time, separate guest quarters were designed befit ting the impressive main residence. “[These have] a kitchenette, bathroom, washer and dryer, and a sleeper sofa,” Gaddis states.

The outdoor living space boasts an infinity-edge pool surround ed by a large lounging area. Nestled close to the water’s edge, a fire pit provides a cozy seating space perfect for roasting marshmal lows with the grandchildren. With a full outdoor kitchen, bar, and eating area, outside dining is always an option. “One of the most luxurious features is a shaded porch right off the primary bedroom that is designed for outdoor massages while enjoying a view of the water,” says Orgren.

Beautiful inside and out, this elegant home makes a special statement to passersby, whether viewing the sleek facade from the street or cruising past the backyard by boat.

“Balance, scale, light, and subtle color were all taken into ac count while designing this home,” says Gaddis. “The simplicity is intentional—to flow with the exterior elements and create a seam less transition.” «

KEEPING

IT COZY DURING THE WINTER MONTHS

‘Tis the season to embrace outdoor living. Although only subtle changes in temperature occur during the winter months in tropical climates, on the shortest day and the longest night of the year—also known as the winter solstice—there are a full three hours and 21 minutes less daylight. Throughout the winter, invite friends and family to assemble in intimate settings on your lanai or in your backyard, whether under the trees, under the stars, or around a firepit.

SUNKEN SPACES

While pergolas and fences delineate outside space, you can also build permanent outdoor living areas into your plans. Sherri DuPont of Bonita Springs-based Collins DuPont Design Group worked alongside two Naples companies—BCB Homes and Architectural Land Design—to realize a luxe and inviting sunken concrete seating area (lined with pillows) that surrounds a rectangular fire pit. Adjacent to an infinity-edge pool, this area ensures those seated within enjoy the sounds of water trickling over the pool’s edge; it’s the perfect backdrop for cosmic conversation. EPIC Oman

Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort

Think of the Middle East and towering sand dunes and sweltering heat likely come to mind. While these stereotypes certainly apply to Oman, they form but one backdrop in a lesser-known country that surprises and delights with eclectic natural beauty. Case in point: Al Jabal Al Akhdar or “the Green Mountain,” a highlight of the Al Hajar Mountains range and a nexus of Oman’s dramatic canyons, shrub-speckled plateaus, and emerald wadis (ravines), located two hours southwest of the coastal capital city of Muscat.

At the core of this splendor rises Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, a property that takes full advantage of an unparalleled location—and a cool climate—to deliver once-in-a-lifetime experienc es. As the highest luxury resort in the Middle East (with an elevation of roughly 6,500 feet) and built along the edge of a massive precipice, the property

claims endless vistas of sculpted rocky terrain recalling Arizona’s finest, augmented by rose and pomegranate orchards, mosques, and abandoned villages. All 82 guest rooms and most of the resort’s 33 private pool villas offer variations of this scene from a balcony or ter race, but it’s the thoughtful portfolio of ameni ties and activities that brands Anantara Al Jabal

To start, the gravity-defying infinity pool ranks among the world’s best, with sweep ing views of the rust-hued cliffs and impec cable poolside service to ensure your glass is never empty. With proper gear and under the tutelage of a skilled guide, traverse the rug ged landscapes along the Jabal Activity Wall, a

three-phase, multi-hour, white-knuckled ob stacle run of via ferrata courses and zip lines hewn into the cliffs. On firmer ground, embark on the intrepid Wadi Al Masdara Hike along side a mountain guru, scaling mammoth boul ders and imposing terrain by hand, stumbling across wild donkeys, and discovering spectac ular natural pools created by the surrounding ravines. For something less intimidating, book a wine-paired Dining by Design multicourse meal at the Royal Edge, a cantilevered platform opposite Diana’s Point, the famed cliffside spot where Princess Diana enjoyed a languid after noon reading while visiting Oman in 1986.

Beyond capitalizing on its geography, An antara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort promises rich cultural and locavore components. For ex ample, from late March to early May, guests can witness the harvesting of Damask roses and production of small-batch rose water. At the spa, treatments are rooted in this timehonored tradition and others. Try the seasonal Rose Rescue Ritual, consisting of a rose and milk cleansing foot ritual, a hydration facial us ing rose-scented products, and a stress mas sage with perfumed rose oil. Alternatively, go for the Revitalizing Pomegranate Journey, in

Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara

Skirting the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Arabian Sea, Oman’s coastline cov ers a whopping 1,917 miles (compare that to Florida’s 1,350). Thanks to a small national population of around 5 million, much of this vast waterfront—and its surrounding land— remains untouched and unknown. However, there’s one Omani coastal city that manages to make waves across the entirety of the Middle East. Say hello to Salalah, a subtropical desti nation in the country’s southernmost reaches, where impossibly wide white-sand beaches

segue to high-rising mountains that change colors with the season—and camels roam freely just about everywhere in between. Here, beachfront Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara reigns as the top luxury property, promising next-level fun-in-the-sun spiked with exhilarating cultural endeavors. Front ing both a private beach and a freshwater la goon, the resort’s architecture mimics Oman’s

coastal fortresses of yore, enhanced with pool villas and personality-driven amenities, all connected by verdant, palm-laced walk ways. The inventory spans 136 rooms, villas, and pool villas, the crown jewel of which is the three-bedroom Royal Beach Pool Villa, an estate-style accommodation marked by pro lific outdoor space, direct beach access, and a personal villa host catering to your every need.

Salalah’s popularity across the Middle East is due in part to its dual identity. Foremost, the beaches are exactly what subtropical dreams are made of. But a traditional city calls just be yond, along with lakes teeming with birds, des ert mountains that erupt with green from June

to September, archaeological ruins that speak to a remarkable history, and an underwater world of Technicolor tropical marine life. Depending on your preferences, days can be completely action-packed or delightfully slow. Thankfully, Al Baleed Resort Salalah by

Anantara facilitates both, the former through guided tours like the Beauty of Salalah, which focuses on natural sites, and the more interactive Discover Heritage and Traditions, plus the predictable beach resort excess of motorized watersports and dive activities. The resort fosters the latter with amenities such as a world-class spa, an infinity pool, multiple restaurants reflecting influences from across Asia and the Persian Gulf, and more.

The resort truly succeeds in crafting extraordinary experiences that speak to this dreamy location. It’s possible to start the day by consummating the fantasy of a floating, Champagne-spiked breakfast in your villa pool. Next up is an Anantara Signature Massage with Frankincense Fusion, using frankincense products made in Salalah (aka the perfume capital of Arabia). Later, sit down to a candlelit dinner on the beach under a canopy of billowing white curtains without another human around—Salalah’s desolate beaches allow for such intimate time with the Arabian Sea. Overall, the sheer beauty of the destination and the exalted hospitality of Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara unite for an epic vacation worth traveling halfway around the world for. Stretching the LIMITS

Seven inches. Doesn’t sound like much, right? It’s around the length of a standard pen cil. Or two credit cards placed end to end. Or four golf balls laid side by side.

But when you add 7 inches between the axles of Bentley’s Bentayga SUV, the result is quite remarkable. It takes the tall-riding fourdoor from luxury sport-ute to an astonishingly spacious-in-the-back, super-luxe flagship.

This is the new Bentayga EWB, short for ex tended wheelbase. It’s stretched by precisely 7.1 inches to take the wheelbase to an elongated 125 inches and overall length to a nontrivial 208.9 inches. And all 7-and-a-bit inches go into creating more space in the back seat and rear doors that could have come off a barn. It means more room to stretch out, kick off your shoes, and cross your legs—not to mention more ease of climbing in and out.

In keeping with all this extra rear-seat volume, Bentley design ers have enhanced the luxury feel even further with the option of an

insanely adjustable “Airline Seat” for the back. And think Gulfstream G500 seats rather than back-by-the-lavatory Southwest seating.

This automotive BarcaLounger can recline up to 40 degrees and will automatically move the front passenger seat as far forward and as upright as it’ll go. It will also deploy a motor ized, heated footrest. Goodnight, we’ll wake you up when we get there.

If that isn’t cosseting enough, both rear seats have an additional party trick. As well as heat ing, cooling, and massaging, they can monitor the temperature and humidity of your body using 177 individual sensors. These then stim ulate muscles and help banish numbness. You might never have to visit a chiropractor again.

In my hour or so in the EWB’s reclined back seat, I can’t say I actually felt the effect of all that pinpoint massaging. But the number of oohs and aahs that came out of my mouth was a testament to their effectiveness.

Bentley will charge an extra $11,195 for the Airline Seat option. But when the cost of a Bentayga EWB kicks off at around $226,900— $30,900 more than the regular Bentayga V8— it’s a small price to pay for such hedonistic

BENTLEY’S NEW LONG-WHEELBASE BENTAYGA EWB IS ALL ABOUT STRETCH-OUT LUXURY

comfort. If individual Airline Seats don’t meet your familial needs, Bentley will equip your EWB with a three-across bench, or even a two-seat bench where the huge center armrest converts into a console with lots of useful storage cubbies.

Before you even climb aboard this new stretchy Bentayga, hopefully you will have cast your eyes over its new lengthier bodywork. From the outside, the EWB looks more like a regular Bentayga than some prom-night Lincoln Town Car stretch limo. Adding towering 22-inch rims helps with the proportions, as does some clever remodeling of those bulges over the rear fenders.

Powering this new XXL Bentayga is Bentley’s proven 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which packs a meaty 542 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. Pedal to the metal, it’ll whoosh the EWB to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. With Bentley’s big 12-cylinder W12 engine about to be pensioned off, don’t expect it

to be offered in the EWB, though a plug-in hybrid could potentially be available next year.

To give the big Bentayga some extra agility, Bentley has equipped the EWB with rearwheel steering, which can pivot the back wheels in the opposite direction to the fronts to tighten the turning radius. Now it spins in just 38.7 feet—2 feet less than a regular Bentayga—making parking a breeze. Add to this

adaptive damping, air springing, and a 48-volt active anti-roll system, and the EWB shrinks in size when it comes to carving curves, while still delivering a ride as smooth as a magic carpet.

With all this luxury and stretch-out comfort, it’s no wonder Bentley is predicting that this new EWB will become the best-selling Bentayga, despite its lofty price tag. Another case of seven being a very lucky number. «

Can a boat be a rock star? It can if it’s a Van Dutch. Celebs such as Leonardo DiCaprio, David Beckham, and most of the Kardashian clan have, at one time or another, been spotted lounging on one of the boat’s cushy sun pads.

And like a good rock star, it hangs out in all the cool places. Head to Monaco, Palma, or Saint-Tropez, and seemingly every few min utes a racy-looking VanDutch 40 or 48 will burble serenely into the harbor to offload or pick up some tragically hip party crowd.

The newest epicenter of VanDutch coolness is Miami, where the boatbuilder has just set up its latest VanDutch Center in the River District. As you’d expect, there’s a fancy sales office and a lineup of demo boats. But you’ll also find a

private owners’ lounge serv ing up cocktails, plus an event space for a waterfront soiree with private, compli mentary mooring. Brett Da vid, who owns supercar mega-dealership Pres tige Imports on North Miami Beach, is heading up the center—a move that only ups its rock star status since any local celebrity or proathlete in need of a new Lamborghini, Pagani, or pre-owned Ferrari is guaranteed to have Da vid on speed dial.

As the name suggests, VanDutch was founded in Holland back in 2008. It launched its first model (the successful VD40 designed by famed Dutch naval architect Frank Mul

der) the following year. In 2020, the Italian marine powerhouse Cantiere del Pardo ac quired the brand and moved production to the yard’s sprawling facility in Forli. The VanDutch lineup now spans five Russian doll look-alike models, from the entry VD32, to the 40, 48, 56, and flagship 75. Each comes with that stunning, minimalist, almost spartan Mulder design featuring a near-vertical bow, huge wraparound windshield, flat and open foredeck, and oversize swim platform.

The showstopper of the range is also the smallest: the new VanDutch 32. Introduced last year, it was the first to benefit from Can tiere del Pardo’s design and boatbuilding expertise. Replacing the original VD30, it features a modified hull that’s longer, wider, lighter, and even more sea-friendly.

Sporty day or weekend boats don’t come more versatile than this. There’s room aboard for up to eight in a party-ready cockpit with L-shaped seating for six and spots for the cap tain and first mate at the helm. A huge pad at the stern can accommodate a trio of sun worshippers.

The cockpit also comes with a compact galley with a sink and a fridge, plus access to a small, unimaginatively designed cabin be low decks. It offers a forward head with a wet shower and twin sofas-cum-single berths. However, at 6 feet, 6 inches, the headroom is impressive.

Everything is all about wipe-down, hoseout simplicity, with the decks, cockpit, and

cabin floors finished in easyto-maintain synthetic teak. Same goes for the durable Sil vertex upholstery and quickdry foam cushions.

As for power, VanDutch gives buyers plen ty of choices, though all from the Volvo-Penta catalog. The base engine package is a single 430-hp Volvo V8 gas motor with stern drive, with an upgrade to a pair of 280-hp Volvo V6s. For more economical diesel power, you can get a single 380-hp Volvo D6 six-cylinder, or twin, compact, 300-hp D4 four-cylinders. You’ll need the twin gas motors to punch the VD32 to its top speed of around 45 knots.

Joystick steering is standard on the twinengine 32s. While this simplifies docking, the crew will still need to take plenty of care shuffling up to the foredeck, where form over function does away with any handrails that might compromise the cruiser’s sleek lines.

With the opening of VanDutch’s Miami Center, expect to see plenty of these headturning runabouts on Florida’s waterways. They certainly bring a new meaning to the term “Going Dutch.” «

DESIGN

Part-time Neapolitan designer, Shelley Johnstone Paschke, blends European sensibilities with American practicality

“Creating beautiful, timeless spaces to be lived in and enjoyed.” Those are the pragmatic words Shelley Johnstone Paschke has lived by and has committed to throughout most of her 30-year career as a designer.

“Any designer can make things look pretty,” ex plains Johnstone Paschke. “I try to create spaces

where memories can be made; I want places to be livable. There’s little point to having pretty things if they can’t be useful.”

When she’s not traveling the country for speaking engagements, design-related events, or client proj ects, Johnstone Paschke splits her time between her

94 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

home in Lake Forest, Illinois, and her Bay Colony residence in Naples. While she does design work for clients back in Illinois—and in several other states, too—she relates that more than half of her business is Naples-based right now. “We love working down here,” she notes. “The projects are exciting.”

In Naples, her recent projects include work for both Royal Poinciana Golf Club and the Port Roy al Club, though the latter has suffered tremendous damages from Hurricane Ian.

“I was one of three on a committee to hire an in terior designer to remodel and renovate the ladies’ locker room at Royal Poinciana, says Mary Jo Bov ich, who is a member and long-time Naples resident. “The result was a total transformation of the space, filled with more light. Working with Shelley is the hidden gem. She is uplifting, and her attention to de tail is unparalleled.”

BACKGROUND CHOICES

Johnstone Paschke hails from Madison, Wiscon sin, and has always been creative. She attributes at least some of her ingenuity to her parents: Her father worked as a landscape architect and her mother as a

florist. Even with these influences, the success she’s created for herself as a designer has come somewhat unexpectedly. “I went to the Uni versity of Wisconsin and majored in communications,” she says. “De sign was something I was always very interested in, but I really didn’t understand that I could make a career of it.”

Following college, she moved to London, England, where she was admitted to the highly revered Inchbald School of Design and com pleted an intensive yearlong program. After, she found employment with a London-based interior designer.

“This is where I learned my attention to detail,” adds Johnstone Paschke. “I worked for an amazing designer and learned much about bespoke details. I took it all in and would travel on the weekends to Euro pean cities, including Paris. But, London was a place full of design opportunities. They take the design industry very seriously there.”

She describes herself as the American girl who went to London. Living abroad and visiting plac es in Europe have had an immense influence on Johnstone Paschke’s work, but she’s never lost sight of her roots. “I love all the details of Europe, but there’s always been this American practical ity, a cleanness, that I mix with them. I don’t like things too overdone—I don’t like ruffles.”

After working in London for about four years, Johnstone Paschke returned to Illinois, first es tablishing her business in Chicago, eventually relocating to the north suburb of Lake Forest. At first, she only worked for friends, but through referrals and word of mouth, she steadily gained more clients. Through it all, she’s maintained a sense of simplicity, however. “We’re a boutique firm,” she tells. “I keep my business small so that I’m not having to manage a lot of people; I pick and choose the projects I want. I only want to be around people who care about me. There must be a level of trust on both sides.”

ETERNAL BEAUTY

Being on trend isn’t important to Johnstone Paschke. Testament to this is the fact she’s lived with her husband, Brett, in the same home for many years. “This is rare for a designer, and my home has not been redone,” she states. “I look at de sign as an investment, and I like the idea of things being timeless. I come home, and I love it.”

Along with timelessness, her design precepts center around beauty, ap proachability, and even a little dose of imperfection.

“We want clients to feel at ease in their homes,” she says. “If they’re entertain ing in their spaces, it should be fun—and easy. And there’s no right or wrong. We want our clients to feel comfortable and confident in their own spaces. It doesn’t have to be perfect. No matter the space; it’s your space. Make it special.”

“When people walk into our home, they can’t help but smile,” says Mary Dolan, a Lake Forest-based client of Johnstone Paschke’s. “Shelley has helped with the design of nearly every room in our home, and when I walk through it, I say to myself ‘I love this room and this home.’ Shelly has been open to my ideas and somehow manages to make them work perfectly.”

As for where she finds inspiration, it’s in books, art, movies, and most of all traveling. She’ll tell you she can’t remember a phone number, but ask her to re call a unique detail on a charming door situated along a side street in Paris, and she’ll speak about it with painstaking precision. In fact, she’s likely already incor porated that door into one of her design creations.

Pictured on this page and opposite is the exterior of Johnstone Paschke’s residence in Lake Forest, Illinois, a home she’s lived in for more than 20 years. PHOTOS THIS PAGE AIMEE MAZZENGA

Johnstone Paschke’s Instagram following of close to 55,000 followers indicates that people appreciate not only her design aesthetic but also her cheerful, genuine, and inclusive approach. “I attribute my following to being truly authentic,” she explains. “I don’t take it too seriously, and I’m not calculated at all. It’s called Instagram for a reason.” She also sees Insta as a conduit to the social media worlds of her children, of which she has five: Hunter, Ford, Will, Luke, and Lauren.

Part of Johnstone Paschke’s Instagram popularity also likely stems from the success of her latest book, A Loving Table, co-authored with Kimberly Schlegel Whitman. The concept, she says, stemmed from an event called the Orchid Dinner that involved decorating elaborate tables with orchids at the Plaza Hotel in benefi t of the New York Botanical Garden.

“I participated in the Orchid Dinner three years in a row, and one year I met Kimberly, who had already written books on tablescaping,” says Johnstone Paschke. “We collaborated on an idea about designers creating loving tables and later worked together to refine the concept. She took it to her publisher, and they loved it.”

On the horizon for Johnstone Paschke are more design projects of course and possibly a second edition of A Loving Table. Enjoying Naples is on the list, too. Her parents, who have wintered in Naples for many years, live in Bay Colony, too, as does a cousin of hers. “Naples holds so many family memories,” she says. “It’s a big part of us.” «

1. Curate items you love and that have meaningful, personal connections to you or your family and friends. It’s about making memories with these people and showing them you care.

2. Try mixing fine china and crystal with more relaxed items like rattan chargers, bamboo-inspired flatware, and woven glassware. Including the unexpected

keeps the tablescape from feeling too formal or fussy.

3. Use a casual block print tablecloth that reflects your personality, and place beautiful, embroidered napkins on top of it. This makes for an elegant combination.

4. To add color, incorporate fresh flowers, small potted plants, or even bowls of fruit; doing this can make tablescapes more vivid and elevate

the table in interesting ways.

5. When curating tabletop collections, consider what you already have, including those special pieces that may have been passed down through the generations. Mixing the new and old can be beautiful and spark amazing conversations.

6. Keep your tabletop items well-organized and easily accessible. This way, you’re

more inclined to use them and to set a lovely table.

7. Items typically found indoors can enhance an outdoor tablescape. Consider bringing items that usually reside inside to the outside.

8. Add an element of fun to the table by including questions under plates to pose to guests. This is a great way to include and involve all guests in the conversation.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR SANITY DURING THE HECTIC HOLIDAY SEASON,

FROM

WALKING BAREFOOT TO BREATH WORK

Is there very little white space on your calendar from the end of November through the first week of January? From attending holiday concerts and cocktail parties to booking hair appointments, buying gifts, and ordering the holiday feast, do you feel overwhelmed? Does your throat constrict and heart race when you think of all the preparation required for the most wonderful time of the year?

Whether it’s a car swerving into your lane on U.S. 41 or reviewing a daunting to-do list, the reaction in the body is similar. According to the Mayo Clinic, when humans encounter threats—or even minor hassles—the hypothalamus, a tiny region at the base of the brain, prompts the adrenal glands to release a surge of hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. This is a normal human reaction that helps the body face challenging situations.

Short term, these reactions are not concerning because the hormones increase your pulse, keep you awake, and make your brain alert and focused. So, take advantage of that burst in energy your body provides at these times and attack your tasks. When stressors are always present, however, and you constantly feel under attack, the body is overexposed to cortisol and other stress-induced hormones. This can increase the risk of anxiety, depression, headaches, digestive issues, muscle tension, and more.

Dr. Vanessa Jaszczerski, a clinical psychologist in private practice in Naples, confirms that the body requires regular periods of relaxation. During the hectic holiday season, carving out me time may seem impossible. But, as the late American journalist Sydney J. Harris said, “The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.” So, considering options that don’t require reservations, appointments, or major planning may be in order.

Visit the Beach

Take advantage of what exists in your backyard. Stroll the shoreline, and if you dare, jump in the mammoth saltwater basin. Sea air is charged with negative ions. And, despite their name, these microscopic molecules, found in extremely high concentrations near the ocean, are positive influences on the body. They pass through our skin cells and enter our lungs via the air we breathe, increasing serotonin levels that in turn help make us feel great.

Walking barefoot in the sand is believed to have stimulating effects on our bodies and minds. Our feet contain nerves and pressure points that when activated help calm and relax us. Jennifer Khosla, a mind-body wellness practitioner and founder of Naples-based wellness company Lean and Green Body, credits grounding—direct physical contact with the earth—with lowering her stress, saying “it rids me of any anxiety I may be experiencing and helps me to stay present in my life.”

The smell of salty air, the sound of waves lapping at the shore, and the touch of the sand all combine to activate the parasympathetic nervous system that controls the body’s ability to relax. There’s a reason why resorts are often found near the ocean!

Strike a Pose

Practice yoga—whether in a studio, on your lanai, or on your bedroom floor. Tania Savolle, a regis tered yoga teacher with more than 600 hours in yoga training, teaches at Practice Yoga, a studio in Na ples. Savolle considers her yoga practice—something she has done for 28 years—as a time for self-care. “It provides me with energy and makes me feel good—mentally and physically,” she says.

One of the many benefits of yoga—“a 5,000-year-old philosophy, science, and way of living,” ex plains Savolle, is that “it quiets the busy mind and turbulent fluctuations of our thoughts, allowing clar ity and mental ease to be attained. Yoga is especially useful during stressful times because you grant yourself a time out; you take a pause from your life, leaving the noisy world outside to check in with your inner world.” Over time and through practice, says Savolle, that inner world becomes a haven and peaceful place to call home.

“The continued practice of quieting the mind connects you to your true self,” relates Savolle, who also notes that “yoga is a perspective of life that encompasses love, generosity, honesty, and compas sion, as well as an attention to self on a deep and profound level.” In her words, “the more loving we become toward ourselves, the more loving and tolerant we become of those around us”—which is es pecially useful during those times we are required to be with others.

Joel Waltzer, a board-certified dermatologist in Naples, has practiced yoga for more than 20 years. Learning to sit in and experience uncomfortable moments in yoga has taught him to do the same when life circumstances are challenging. Mastering difficult poses with the body provides proof and reminders that you can get through future uncomfortable situations. You can train your mind, through the practice of yoga, to understand a difficult situation will soon pass, that you will succeed in getting through a difficult conversation or uncomfortable moment.

Breathe Deep

Breathe with your mouth open. It’s a simple yet profound concept Eliza Kane first learned while opening a Lululemon yoga studio 13 years ago in Los Angeles. Intrigued, she began exploring breath work and has been a practi tioner ever since. Kane shares information about breath work, which is still a relatively new practice, on her website (elizakane.com) through a blog she authors; she also offers free guided breath work meditations or the opportu nity to book virtual sessions. She frequently travels to both Florida and Colo rado to host in-person seminars or to lead teacher-training seminars.

Breath work can be particularly beneficial when we’re overstimulated. Our bodies contract, and we are not present in the moment. To ease stress and let go, Kane promotes an open-mouth breathing technique where you push your breath, or life force, deep into the lower abdomen.

Breath work is unique compared to other forms of meditation as it not only works to slow the mind but also “soothes the nervous system, clearing it of frenetic, chaotic, and stressful energy,” says Kane. The result is a more relaxed presence. “One is able to really enjoy the festivities and celebrations happen ing around them,” she adds. Kane recommends practicing breath work from 15 to 20 minutes at a time but notes, “you only need as little as seven minutes to notice a shift.”

Holidays can conjure many emotions; suppressing them doesn’t make them go away. In fact, emotions tend to feel heavy, and holding on to them is exhausting. Acknowledging emotions helps to process them: “Give yourself space to feel and honor them,” says Kane. “Breathing helps keep you feeling more vital, even in moments of sadness or anger.”

Our minds are like computers, and when we have too many programs run ning and files open, everything slows down. We start to feel overwhelmed, and as Kane points out, we can even crash like computers.

“Pausing to reset, or even just slow down, helps keep the mind clear, help ing people feel alert and decisive on what actually needs to be done and what can be let go,” explains Kane. Breathing does this, but as with anything, con sistency is key. “Create a practice,” she suggests. “Sneak out regularly—I call it siesta time—shut the blinds, lay down, and breathe.”

Another unique element of this breathing practice is that the second inhale is taken into the upper chest—the heart center. Kane explains that, in today’s world, most people have guards up around their hearts. “When you are able to focus in on the heart and allow the heart to soften and open, you experi ence appreciation for the love that does surround you, and you are much more likely to savor all the good in your life and not be bothered by the small stuff that inevitably happens around the holidays,” she says. “You can give and receive the love that is so much a part of the holiday season.” «

Hinckley

What happens when you combine Down East lobster boat lines with the latest in hybrid diesel-electric power? You get Hinckley Yachts’ brand-new Picnic 40 S SilentJet.

This built-in-Rhode-Island knockout features two beefy 90-kW electric motors juiced by an 80-kWh battery to ease you out of your slip in stealthy silence. Then this oh-so-elegant 40-footer will cruise along at 7 knots for an hour and 5.5 knots for 90 minutes.

When the battery gets low—or you simply need to get somewhere in a hurry—the Hinckley’s twin 550-horsepower Cummins turbo-diesels will kick in and punch you to a 35-knot cruising speed.

And while the diesels are purring, they’re also topping up the battery. In just 30 to 45 minutes, they’re back to being fully charged, allowing you to run all the systems (including the air-conditioning) at anchor with no need for a generator. Watts not to love? (hinckleyyachts.com)

Viking Yachts 64 Convertible

If you want to strike fear into the biggest fighting marlin or tuna in the deep blue sea, you want a Viking. Based in New Gretna, New Jersey, this familyowned builder has been turning out state-of-the-art fishing battlewagons for more than half a century.

Viking’s latest—and perhaps greatest—big-game fishing machine is the 64 Convertible, a hard-charging, wave-smashing 64-footer packing more than 4,000 horsepower of V12 MTU muscle.

Evolved from the super-successful 54 Convertible, this new 64 saw a major redesign of its hull and deck, which now has the strength and rigidity of a Wells Fargo bank vault. Forty knots into gnarly seas? Not a problem.

But the added appeal of the 64 is that it combines hedonistic levels of luxury and comfort for when the rods are stowed and the margaritas get mixed. There’s even the option of an enclosed, fully air-conditioned flybridge, as well as air-conditioning in the cockpit and a 50-inch pop-up HD TV in the leather-lined salon. (vikingyachts.com)

Huckins Sportsman 38

Lovers of classic wooden motor yachts will likely know all about the racy Sportsman 36 that Frank Pembroke Huckins began building at his Jacksonville yard way back in 1936. At the time it was the must-have weekend cruiser for Florida boaters.

While the original Huckins Sportsman eased out of production decades ago, a new consumer appreciation for authenticity and retro style prompted the Huckins family to create an updated version of the original Sportsman 36—and make it a hybrid.

While the unmistakable lines are largely unchanged, everything else is brand new. Now, instead of trusty timber, the Sportsman 38 uses the very latest in marine construction materials, including Kevlar, carbon fiber, and impact-resistant structural foam.

In place of the original gas motor, there’s a pair of beefy 380-horse Cummins inline-6 turbo diesels, together with a high-torque 20-hp Elco electric motor juiced by a bank of 18 lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. Engage the electric motor and the Sportsman will glide along at 7 knots for a couple of hours. Fire up the diesels and you can run at 35 knots.

Going back to the future has never been so much fun. (huckinsyacht.com)

When hockey great Wayne Gretzky wanted a new boat for cruising on Idaho’s Lake Coeur d’Alene—where he has a summer home—there was only one choice: a wooden masterpiece from local builder Coeur Custom.

The result is this mirror-varnished 34-footer, built from double-planked sapele hardwood and featuring a plump upright bow, a curvy stainless-steel-framed windshield, a sun-shading hardtop, and a wave-piercing deep-V hull. Inside there’s room for 12 in the main cockpit and a spacious open bow, with all-white upholstery designed by Gretzky’s wife, Janet. She also commissioned lots of cushions emblazoned with her husband’s iconic 99.

Powering the Steinway 340 HT (named for the piano maker) is a pair of Mercury 8.2-liter 430-hp gas inboards that can push the boat to a comfortable 45-knot top speed.

Fancy one just like it? Coeur Custom has a second boat in build that will be priced at around $900,000. (coeurcustoms.com)

Westport W112

For any well-heeled captain of industry contemplating purchasing a superyacht around the 100-foot mark, there’s one name that shoots to the top of the list: Westport.

This Port Angeles, Washington, yard has been around since 1965, building salty commercial craft and passenger ferries. In the mid-1980s, it expanded its lineup to include luxury motor yachts.

The most successful in Westport’s constantly growing catalog is the W112 series. Since its debut in 1994, more than 65 of these classy 112-footers have been built, making it arguably the most successful superyacht ever.

What’s the appeal? Timeless elegance is part of it; Westport shirks the current trend of overexaggerated, origami-folded yacht design. The 112 is also the perfect size—not too big, not too small—with cabins for eight guests and space for a crew of five.

She’s also fast. Two 1,900-hp Caterpillar diesels can give an impressive 26-knot top speed. Add to that a composite fiberglass hull that’s acclaimed for its smooth, super-stable ride, and you have a vessel that’s more than worth its multimillion-dollar price tag. (westportyachts.com)

Cigarette Racing 59 Tirranna

There’s poetry in motion when a Cigarette Racing 59 Tirranna—propelled by a sextet of supercharged 4.6-liter Mercury Racing V8 outboards packing a combined 2,700 hp—is shrieking across the water at 80 mph. Eyeballs water, cheeks flap, follicles get wrenched from your scalp. Call that fun? You bet.

This pencil-thin projectile is the flagship of Miami-based Cigarette’s fleet. Constructed from lightweight yet I-beam-stiff carbon fiber and composites, the Tirranna is designed to do one thing and one thing only: Go insanely fast. Miami to Bimini? The Tirranna will get you there in less than an hour.

Yet it’s also packed with creature comforts, like a 29-speaker 5,200-watt JL Audio sound system and Poltrona Frau leather upholstery. Below deck there’s a forward settee that converts to a queen bed, plus a spacious shower and head. In the cockpit and open foredeck there’s seating for up to 28 of your closest friends.

If all this sounds appealing, expect to write a check for around $3 million. But when it comes to zipping to the Bahamas for lunch at 80 mph, the Tirranna is priceless. (cigaretteracing.com)

Nothing captures the essence of American beauty on the water more than a Chris-Craft. The now-Sarasota-based company has been around since 1874, when Chris topher Columbus Smith, aka Mr. Chris-Craft, built his first wooden boat at age 13.

These days, the company is part of another American icon, Winnebago Industries, and builds a lineup of center-console and bowrider models in the 24-foot to 35-foot range. Each one com bines high style, quality, and craftsmanship with surprising value for the money.

Our current favorite is the flagship of the fleet, the new Launch 35 GT. In addition to masses of stretch-out seating, this family-friendly 35-footer comes with all those lovely Chris-Craft cues, such as teak flooring, diamond-quilted upholstery, and a stainless-steel-framed windshield.

Take your pick from twin Mercury or Volvo V8 gas engines with stern drives. Or triple 300- or 350-hp Mercury Verado outboards, each with the option of easy-parking joystick control.

Manitowoc, Wisconsin, seems an unlikely place to base a company that specializes in cutting-edge superyachts. But the Burger Boat Company has been crafting world-class vessels here since 1863.

Among the hundreds of award-winning yachts the yard has turned out over the years, one of the true standouts is the 151-foot Sycara IV, designed to capture the style and splendor of the 1920s Golden Age. Built for East Coast car dealer extraordinaire Ray Catena, she features a gorgeous fantail stern, gold-leaf-encrusted bowsprit, and a sleek superstructure that enables her to squeeze under the low bridges of New York’s Erie Canal.

Inside she’s all Madrone burl paneling with inlaid Macassar ebony, teak, and maple flooring, plus lots of mirror-polished stainless steel. French doors leading into the main salon feature Lalique crystal panels.

In 2017, the yacht was sold to Florida entrepre neur Klaus Bytzek, who renamed her Nadan and embarked on a refit that included the addition of a pilothouse on the top deck. She was sold again in 2021 after being on the market for $28 million. (burgerboat.com)

Delta Marine INVICTUS Sabre Yachts

Seattle-based Delta Marine dates back to 1967, when brothers Ivor and Jack Jones began building fiberglass fishing boats. Today, the Jones family still owns and operates the company, which is renowned for the graceful, state-of-the-art superyachts it designs and builds.

Yachts like the ravishing 216-foot Invictus that premiered in 2013 and is a firm favorite within the luxury charter market, cruising the Mediterranean in the summer and the Bahamas and Caribbean in the winter.

Featuring a rugged steel hull and lightweight composite super structure, the yacht is cavernous inside and out, courtesy of a beam that stretches more than 43 feet. Below decks it’s big enough to ac commodate 20 guests across nine staterooms.

Powered by a pair of 2,780-horsepower Caterpillar diesels, she has a top speed of 16 knots and carries enough fuel to cover 5,000 nautical miles at 13 knots.

Delta’s craftsmanship is seen in the top-notch construc tion and stunning interior fixtures and fittings. Our favorite spots aboard are the Rat Pack–style bar and sky lounge that converts into a nightclub worthy of Paris.

If you’re in the market, she could be yours for a cool $100 million through brokers Burgess. (deltamarine.com)

58 Salon Express

If there’s such a thing as a Bentley Continental for the seas, a leading candidate would be the Maine-built Sabre Yachts 58 Salon Express. With its gracious proportions and single-minded focus on quality and craftsmanship, the Sabre 58 oozes luxury from every pore of its satinvarnished woodwork.

The 58 is part of a five-model lineup of Sabre Salon Express fast cruisers that includes a 38, 43, 45, and 48. Add to these a 48 Fly Bridge and top-of-the-line 66 Dirigo flagship.

But the $2.5 million 58 has everything the cruising family could dream of. Below decks, there’s a full-beam master cabin, a forward VIP, and a twin-berth guest cabin to starboard, each with its own en-suite head and shower. Up in the salon, there’s a spacious galley, oversize sofas, and a well-equipped helm station with seating for four.

Power comes from space-saving Volvo Penta IPS950 pods each packing 725 hp and good for more than 30 knots flat out. And just like that Bentley, this Sabre delivers its horsepower in serene silence. (sabreyachts.com) «

STAR POWER

While its unique geometric shape makes it the perfect garnish for a stylish cocktail, the star fruit (or carambola) deserves a starring role in your diet thanks to its nutrition prowess and refreshing taste. A single medium-size star fruit has only 28 calories and 6 grams of carbs and is rich in vitamin C and fiber. The fruit, which can be consumed skin and all, delivers a sweet taste with a tart undertone that some liken to a mélange of apple, pear, grape, and citrusfamily fruits. While the species of tree is native to Southeast Asia, it does thrive in South west Florida. Golden Gate Nursery in Naples sells star fruit trees, although availability is limited so call before visiting. Once you’ve acquired your star fruit, incorporate it into a tropical dessert, breakfast, sal ad, drink—the possibilities are endless. COOKBOOKS

Kitchen Privileges: A Hands-on Account of Life, Food, and How to Cook by Tony Ridgway

When it comes to cooking advice, I turn to those who have experience—most often my parents, both of whom are incredible in the kitchen. However, local chef and restaurateur Tony Ridgway, who has enjoyed a culinary career spanning approximately five decades, offers plenty of this as well. A delicious amalgam of both food and feeling, this impressive 500-page cookbook includes a short memoir, as well as a hearty portion of practical advice, including how to source quality meat and seafood, cooking techniques, equipment recommendations, and instructions for creating the savory and sweet alike. (ridgwaybarandgrill.com) —Jane E. Enos, editor in chief

Milk: Momofuku Milk Bar by Christina Tosi From cereal milk ice cream with cornflake crunch to birthday cake truffles to my personal favorite: a sweet and buttery confection known as crack pie (later renamed Milk Bar pie), chef Christina Tosi’s imaginative and joyful dessert recipes are sure to hit you squarely in the sweet tooth. (milkbarstore.com) —Kristen Desmond LeFevre, contributing editor

When I’m feeling nostalgic for my favorite New York City spot, I break out Balthazar’s cookbook and (ask my husband to) whip up brasserie classics such as steak tartare and escargot. The recipes provide an authentic and comprehensive tour of both the restaurant’s menu and this genre of cuisine. (balthazarny.com)

—Allison Wolfe Reckson, senior editor

Ottolenghi Simple by Yotam Ottolenghi I’m not a cook, nor do I particularly enjoy the cooking process. I do, however, enjoy flipping through cookbooks and eating good food. Awhile ago, my well-read and well-traveled brother, who is a fabulous and patient cook, pointed out cookbooks authored by Yotam Ottolenghi, an Israeli-born British chef, restaurateur, and food writer. Ottolenghi specializes in Middle Eastern–inspired flavors and vegetablecentric cooking—which I specialize in consuming. He promises the recipes in Ottolenghi Simple are all made in 30 minutes or less with 10 or fewer ingredients in a single pot. This intrigues me, as does anyone who lists lemon as a necessary and everyday ingredient in cooking. (ottolenghi.co.uk) —Gaylene Salomons, associate editor

That Sounds So Good by Carla Lalli Music Not only does Carla Lalli Music have the best name in the cooking game, but her recipes are equal parts stick-to-your-ribs guilty pleasures and healthy happy meals—exactly the ratio I strive to achieve in my life. Bonus: Lalli Music’s YouTube tutorials are as delightful as she is. (carlalallimusic.com) —Mary Murray, executive editor

Happy Cooking: Make Every Meal Count … Without Stressing Out by Giada De Laurentiis

To me, the words “happy” and “cooking” belong together. I’m all about simplicity and joy—both Giada hallmarks—in the kitchen, so I gravitate to this cookbook for healthy dishes like detox soup and cheatday classics like an outrageous chocolate dessert salami. ‘TIS THE SEASON

SCENT OF SPRUCE

Is there anything more welcoming than the fragrant aromas of the holidays? While the classic Italian Negroni is wonderful on its own, this low-proof riff on a white Negroni boasts spruce-infused Lillet Blanc, making it a natural choice for yuletide celebrations. Maintaining the balance with flowery Lillet and bitter Suze but replacing the high-proof gin with a decidedly lower-ABV Shochu, this version also gets a frosty winter makeover with a touch of blue spirulina.

First Frost Ingredients

1 1/2 oz. Shochu

1 oz. spruce-infused Lillet Blanc

3/4 oz. Suze

1/2 tsp. blue spirulina

Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir until chilled. Strain into your desired vessel. This recipe makes 1 serving, but you can easily multiply it to batch the drink. Without sweeteners and citrus components, it will last through the holidays.

Spruce-Infused Lillet Blanc Ingredients

1 750-ml bottle of Lillet Blanc

1 cup spruce or Douglas fir needles

Combine the ingredients in a glass jar and let sit in the refrigerator for 4-8 hours, or longer depending on your taste. Shake periodically to distribute flavors. Strain the mixture into a clear glass jar and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

HEALTHY HOLIDAY EATING

Pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, stuffing—these delicious foods are likely to grace the holiday table, though we sometimes feel guilty about eating them.

If you’re worried about managing your diet during holiday celebrations, you may be setting yourself up for “food guilt,” which is “feeling bad about eating a particular food or type of food that breaks the rules you have set for yourself around eating,” explains

“This leads to the diet cycle of trying to make up for the uncomfortable emotion by becoming more strict and rigid around food, leading to overeating.” For a few tips on approaching food in healthier ways— both in and out of the holiday season—turn the page.

NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2022 145
Emily McDonagh, a certified eating disorder spe cialist and licensed clinical social worker in Naples.
EXPERT ADVICE

Tips for Healthy HOLIDAY EATING (Cont.)

1. Avoid labeling food as good or bad. “Foods are just foods,” says McDonagh. She points out that both a salad and a chocolate fudge sundae have nu tritional value. “They both have things in [them] that our brains and bodies need and also that bring us emotions, such as joy,” she notes.

2. Try intuitive and mindful eating. These practices involve being present in the moment dur ing meals, eating when you’re hungry, paying attention to when you’re full, and being kind to yourself.

3. Don’t restrict food or engage in overexercise.

You may plan to avoid food earlier in the day to over-indulge later, but McDonagh advises against it. “I think being able to regularly and consistently nourish your body and not falling in the trap of engag ing in restrictive eating set you up for hav ing a healthier relationship with food,” she says. In the same vein, she recommends against overexercising to allow yourself more food.

4. Accept that you may eat past fullness.

At times, you’ll eat more than your body needs, and that’s okay. “It happens sometimes because we’re human, right?,” says McDonagh. “And so, we’re not always 100 percent in tune

CONVERSATIONAL COMMON GROUND

You likely know the story: You gather with family and friends over the holi days, and old disagreements often arise. “Whatever communication patterns have been practiced over time will continue to emerge around the holidays,” explains Dr. Libby Badillo, a licensed clinical social worker and owner of Shoreline Therapy & Consulting in Naples. These may in clude passive aggressive communications or contentious topics like parenting styles or politics.

If a problem topic is brought up, Badillo recommends listening but also having a

with our body’s and brain’s hunger and fullness at any given moment,” she explains.

5. Set healthy boundaries with fam ily and friends.

“Unfortunately, we live in a culture and a society where there’s a lot of focus on how people look from the outside,” affirms McDonagh. And par ticularly when you haven’t seen family or friends for some time, they may be more likely to comment on weight. Still, “nobody actually has a right to talk about your physical body without your permission,” notes McDonagh. She recommends modeling conversations that focus on internal rather than external attributes and setting boundaries when necessary. —E.K.

plan to set boundaries if needed. “You can show empathy for the other person with out needing to agree with the content,” she points out. However, if “the discussion is beginning to stray into a precarious realm, note your own feelings first, avoid state ments that put the other person on the de fensive, and make a recommendation for how to engage differently.” Then, change the subject to a topic you’ve prepared.

Current events may also help, especially as of late. “The devastation of Hurricane Ian brought us to a place of common ground through the realization of our

common humanity,” says Badillo. “If we continue to tap into this sense of gratitude and common humanity in our hearts and minds, we may be better equipped to find common ground at family gatherings.” (shorelineendeavors.com) –E.K.

Still reaching down to touch your toes before going for a run? You may not be doing your body any favors. For a warm-up, “the static stretching that most people think about, actually, is probably not the best idea,” explains Juan Quiroga, a doctor of physical therapy and owner of Excel Physical Therapy of Naples . He adds that these stretches are better performed at the end of your exercise routine. For your pre-workout prep, he recommends dynamic stretching instead. The practice involves moving joints and muscles in different areas of your body to increase your muscle temperature. Quiroga also emphasizes the importance of preparing for exercise and paying attention to your body when you stretch. “Being present means that [stretching] is a part of the overall conditioning,” he says. “It’s just as important as anything else that we do.” Quiroga recommends these dynamic stretches the next time you’re warming up. (physicaltherapyofnaples.com) —E.K.

STRETCH 1

On all fours, place one hand behind your neck. Maintaining this position, turn your body upward, keeping good balance through the rotation. Repeat five times on each side while remembering to breathe rhythmically.

STRETCH 2

Sitting with your legs crossed, reach with an extended arm in front of your chest. Bring the same arm up overhead while turning your neck and torso gently (in the same direction as raised arm). Repeat five times on each side.

Your new smile starts here!

STRETCH 3

From a standing position, bring one knee up while supporting it with both hands, helping it gently stretch upwards. Then, step forward with the same leg, reaching down the sides of your leg with both arms. Repeat on the other side, completing five steps on each leg.

WARM-UP

HAPPY FEET

If you haven’t been paying attention to your feet, now might be the time to start. “Years of wear and tear can be hard on your feet,” leading to injuries and disorders that can affect your mobility and lifestyle, explains Dr. Sean Kibria, a board-certified podiatrist and owner of Sole Podiatry Center in Naples. As you age, you may develop conditions like bunions, heel pain, and hammer toe. Foot care habits can cause issues, too.

“Probably the number one mistake people often make is incorrectly cutting their toenails,” notes Kibria, which he says can lead to ingrown nails. To keep your feet healthy as you age, he recommends examining your feet every day for cracks, blisters, pressure sores, and anything else out of the ordinary, as well as trimming toenails correctly (with the edges aligned with the tips of your toes) to prevent ingrown nails. “Having sore feet is not a normal part of aging, so please don’t ignore it,” Kibria says. “If you experience pain or have questions or concerns about your foot care, consult a podiatrist.” (solepodiatrycenter.com) —E.K.

If you notice you’re having trouble reaching and hitting the pickleball or you’re overextending when grasping objects, you may have issues with hand-eye coordination. This ability declines with age and may go hand in hand with other health issues, like balance and even dementia. Even if you don’t play sports, hand-eye coordination is important because it can affect your independence and activities, including driving.

Sean Wells, a physical therapist at Wells Physical Therapy in Naples, says it doesn’t have to be this way. “Some older adults just feel like as part of aging, they just accept the fact that they can no longer do things,” he says. “With training, the right attitude, and obviously motivation, you can improve it.” He recommends exercise as the best medicine, including strength training and cardiovascular workouts like running and bicycling. Sports like tennis and golf, where you receive instant feedback, also help.

If you don’t want to leave home, try virtual reality. Wells recommends games where you reach out and hit objects, such as Beat Saber and Supernatural VR, to improve hand-eye coordination. “The more you practice and the more feedback you have, the better you’re going to improve,” he says. (wellsphysicaltherapy.com) –E.K.

LIVING WITH IVEY

THE DEAL WITH VITAMIN D

AND HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE GETTING ENOUGH

Vitamin D is a vital nutrient needed to maintain strong bones. It also supports muscle, immune, and lung function as well as the metabolism and brain, blood, and gut health. Without adequate vitamin D, the body can’t absorb the calcium it ingests—leading to weakened bone health and osteoporosis—and the immune system can’t effectively fight off bacteria and viruses.

Despite vitamin D’s important role in physiological health, 50 percent of the global population and 35 percent of the American population are deficient. Two factors that might be contributing to this are the more indoor lifestyle that modern humans

live compared with our ancestors, plus the scarcity of vitamin D in our food. Infants up to 1 year old need 400 IU (international units) per day, while people ages 1 to 70 need 600 and those older than 70 need 800. Thankfully, there are numerous ways to offset a deficit, including spending time outdoors, increasing your intake of vitamin D–rich foods, and incorporating supplements into your daily routine.

Vitamin D is also referred to as the sunshine vitamin, and your body actually creates it by converting cholesterol in your skin when exposed to sunlight. An easy way to up your intake is to get moderate sun exposure every day. Pencil in 10 to 20 minutes a day of sun time—sunscreen free—to help increase your vitamin D levels naturally, without burning your skin.

Mushrooms, especially shiitake and button: 150 IU per cup

Salmon: 400 IU in 3.5 oz. (up to 900 IU if wild)

Tuna: 300 IU in 3.5 oz.

Sardines: 250 IU in 3 oz.

Cod liver oil: 450 IU per tsp.

Oysters: 320 IU in 3.5 oz.

Shrimp: 150 IU in 4 oz.

Eggs: 25 IU in 1 egg

Sulfuric foods: Cruciferous vegetables rich in sulfur help your body synthesize vitamin D. Think: brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, onions, shallots, garlic, beans, and oats.

FUN FACT: Vitamin D is boosted if you give your mushrooms a sunbath. Studies have shown IU levels can increase from 150 to 2,300 if exposed to sunlight. Talk about magic mushrooms!

Read on for more ways to add vitamin D to your diet.

SUPPLEMENT GUIDELINES

D3 + K2: Be sure you supplement with a combination of D3 and K2. The vitamin K ensures that calcium is absorbed where it needs to be, i.e. bones and muscle tissue.

Magnesium: Magnesium in your diet as well as a magnesium citrate supplement helps your body convert vitamin D into its active form.

2 garlic cloves, minced

1/4 tsp. salt

2 tbsp. olive oil

2 cups shiitake mushrooms, sliced 1 shallot, sliced

2 cups fresh spinach

SEARED WILD SALMON OVER CRISPY ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS

2 tbsp. olive oil, divided

1 garlic clove, freshly grated

2 6-oz. wild salmon fillets, skin on Juice of 1/2 lemon

Pinch of sea salt

Fresh cracked pepper, to taste Parsley for garnish

» Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Toss halved brussels sprouts in 1 tbsp. olive oil and the grated garlic. Using a parchment-lined baking sheet, place brussels sprouts cut-side down (this ensures crispiness). Bake for 25 minutes until brown and crispy.

» While brussels sprouts are roasting, coat a cast-iron skillet with 1 tbsp. olive oil. Pat dry salmon fillets and salt generously. Over medium-high heat, place salmon fillets flesh-side down and cook for 6-8 minutes. Flip fillets and transfer to oven (with sprouts) and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Remove brussels sprouts from oven and squeeze with juice of half a lemon and sprinkle with sea salt. Remove skin from salmon fillets. Arrange brussels sprouts on a plate and top with salmon fillet. Finish with fresh cracked pepper and garnish with parsley.

» Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Whisk together the eggs, almond milk, garlic, and salt in a bowl and set aside. Using a cast-iron skillet, add olive oil, mushrooms, and shallot and cook over medium heat for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add spinach and cook for 1 minute until wilted. Pour in egg mixture. GOOD NATURE

It’s a Beautiful Day

WELL-BEING

There is almost nothing as glorious as a sunrise. What an invitation to relax on the sand as the sky lights up at the horizon. And it all happens in an instant. When I leave for work early, sometimes I just have to pull over to enjoy it. Time stops in the stillness, and my worries melt away. Then, I’m off again, completely restored.

While so many of us move from one busy week to the next, living surrounded by such a wealth of nature offers a rich opportunity to stay grounded and in the present. You don’t need a formal meditation practice; simply walking on the beach at sunrise supports a contemplative state of mind. Tuning into the lap of the waves and taking in long, deep breaths of the sea air while feeling each foot fall on the sand benefits body, mind, and spirit. Research has shown that listening to water sounds can reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol after just 10 minutes. By walking barefoot on the sand, we can absorb trace minerals through the feet. Greeting the morning light activates the pineal gland and helps set our circadian rhythms, which is beneficial to our overall health and well-being.

Much like listening to water sounds, spending time in nature, even amid an urban setting, can lower stress. Thankfully, in Florida, we have opportunities to tap into this therapeutic beauty everywhere we turn. When walking along trails or strolling through gardens, I’m reminded of the generosity of this place. Every time I pass certain trees, I notice how the branches reach out so enticingly, almost as if they could pull you into an embrace.

When I take time to recognize the little things and to bring

my awareness to the natural world, it shifts my perception. Living in deeper appreciation just feels so good. After all, this is the core of every meditation practice—sinking into the moment and finding our gratitude.

But when I’m moving too quickly, I miss out on these experiences and the effects that follow. Every meal tastes that much more delicious when I’ve spent some time in the garden. It’s easier to sleep at night when I’ve taken a swim in the ocean during the day. I laugh more after I steal away for a few hours to go horseback riding with my daughter.

We can also view slowing down as a community-wide gift to one other. By leaning into nature and moving at a pace that allows for renewal and recognition, I know that the peaceful feeling I generate allows me to participate in gratitude and giving with the people around me, including those who matter most. Nature itself is a source of energy, and when we tap into that with our awareness, it has the power to radiate and enrich our lives every day. «

Trust in EDUCATION

WHEN IT COMES TO SAVING FOR COLLEGE, TWO PRIMARY OPTIONS PREVAIL

The average price of tuition and fees for a four-year college educa tion at a private institution has skyrocketed past $150,000, according to the latest study by U.S. News. Even an in-state public college costs an average of $40,000 for four years. And those expenses are likely to continue to rise each year.

It’s no wonder parents and grandparents are often seeking ways to plan and save. While state 529 education plans are popular and relatively easy to set up, an education trust provides more flexibil ity, says Melissa Langa, principal at Bove & Langa law firm in Bos ton, an adjunct professor of estate planning at Boston University School of Law, and co-author of The Complete Book of Wills, Estates, & Trusts.

Unlike the 529, which grows free of income tax, a trust is subject to income tax. Depending on how the trust is drafted, the creator of the trust or the trust itself will pay the taxes. But these taxes can also be minimized by investing in assets that don’t generate capital gains with high turnover, Langa says.

Another drawback, for both 529 plans and education trusts, is the gift tax. In order to avoid paying it, contributors can stay under the annual exclusion amount, which in 2023 is $17,000 per year for an individual or $34,000 for a couple. A 529 has an advantage over a trust in that it can be front-loaded with five years’ worth of contribu tions and still avoid the gift tax, Langa explains. This is a beneficial option if the plan is set up when the child is older and will need the money within a few years.

While the state 529 plan may still be the best choice for some, there are several reasons why a trust is a better option. Arguably the biggest advantage of an education trust is that it can be written to cover a wide variety of outcomes, unlike a 529 plan. “A 529 has to be used for a specific purpose: educa tion,” says Langa. “If the beneficiary dies or doesn’t go to college, the plan will be paid out and deferred tax will be due. Plus, there will be a penalty.”

Some grandparents (by far the most common creators of education trusts, Langa notes) worry that if the trust terms are too loose, their grandchildren will blow off college and take the money to make other purchases. Although the beneficiary generally has that right, grand parents can leave a legal side letter to trustees (the person or people they appoint to govern the trust and its distri butions) informing them that the intention of the trust is education rather than other expenses, Langa says. The creators of the trust can also stipulate that unused funds

156 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED BALANCE

be donated to a charity or be deferred to another grandchild for education, or they can draft the trust to make it difficult for the beneficiary to withdraw the money.

The creators of the trust determine how strict they want it to be. “If they say they want it to be used for education and nothing else, we will draft it that way, but we always counsel at least putting in a failsafe provision,” says Langa. “The trust can then be used for another reason if a child gets a full ride for tuition and fees or gets very sick and needs the money for medical care, for example.”

Another reason it’s a good idea to be flexible is, in some cases, it’s the grandparents who circumvent their own intentions. “When people get older, if they have a sizable estate and want to reduce it for tax purposes, they can pay qualified education expenses, including tuition, directly to an institution under section 2503E of the IRS code and it’s not considered a gift for tax purposes,” says Langa. “That’s a freebie for the grandchild, and if the grandparents already had set up an education trust, maybe that becomes money that can be used for a first house or some other purpose.”

Langa believes 529 plans are more widely used than education trusts, but that’s often because people aren’t always informed of the

range of options until they talk to an attorney. Anything that helps offset the cost of education is beneficial, but she advises clients to think about how the money should be handled if things don’t go as planned. “The more flexibility you have the better, because you can’t predict the path of a human life.” «

THE HOTTEST CULTURE AND COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS

THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM

Birds inspire and delight daily. The Audubon Cork screw Swamp Sanctuary, located in east Collier and Lee counties, is a 13,450-acre home for a wide diversity of birds—some are year-round residents, others are seasonal, and some pass through during migration periods. Guided tours are a great way to enjoy the sanctuary and its birdlife. However, if you choose to walk the 2-mile-plus boardwalk without a guide, passionate naturalists are readily available along the way to answer questions and point out the sights and sounds of the swamp. This month, register for a birding walk with a naturalist, taking place from 8 to 11 a.m. on December 6 and 13. Those on the walk (which is limited to 10 participants, 16 years or older) will learn how to identify birds and about the importance of the fresh water wetland plants and habitats. Comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, sunscreen, and drinking water are a must. (corkscrew.audubon.org) –Gaylene Salomons

POPS OF COLOR

Florida-based photographer Jerry Rabinowitz shot these vibrant poppies at Maison et Jardins de Claude Monet (the House and Gardens of Claude Monet) in Giverny, France. A resident of Florida for 22 years, he relates that photographing in this picturesque environment was incredible, especially since Monet himself drew profuse inspiration from the garden for many of his paintings. Rabinowitz enhanced his original photograph of the poppies with a technique that involves layering the same image over itself. The result, which is on display here, is a more saturated, obscured image elevating the mystique and mood. Rabinowitz, who can often be found shooting places and faces in Naples, studied photography at Boston University; he also trained with celebrated photographer Lee Friedlander.
